Book Description
This is the fifth edition and twentieth anniversary of this groundbreaking book, which is referred to by many in the music industry as the ultimate musician's "bible."
The book features a foreword written by internationally renowned recording artist Loreena McKennitt, who, with the guidance of Ms. Rapaport's book, started her own Quinlan Road label in 1985.
How To Make and Sell Your Own Recording addresses the important technological changes that have occurred in the nineties, including the impact of the Internet and how it is being used as an effective sales, marketing, and promotional tool by indie labels and musicians.

This Book is no joke.......2000-12-22
I originally purchased the second addition of this book. It inspired me to Open my own record store back in 1989. The record store, called Locals Only was based on thing I learned from reading the book and using that knowledge. Here we are almost in 2001 and those principles still stand. We operate a website...that has been vibrant since its launch in 1995. This book is a great starting point for anyone serious about making it as an independent artist.
What a joke!.......2000-02-20
I read one of the original versions of this book. The updated version just took the word "vinyl" out and copied sections of other books I have been using! (Sweeney, Kashif). Buy the books of these two guys. I have seen results with their books. I couldn't even unload this book at a used book store! they already had other copies.
Fate Management: "If you want the $ , buy this book .".......1998-11-25
I received this book at The Art Institute of Philadelpphia as a text book, while I studied Music and Video Business. Before I entered school, I had always been an artist manager. I learned a lot about the industry over the years. "How To Make And Sell Your Own Recordings" became one of my most important guide books. It helped me to aquire the skills to do everything myself. "How To Make And Sell Your Own Recordings" has a lot of valuable information for any artist manager or independent musician. It helps to ensure that you present yourself in a professional way without the need to hire out.

Wonderful book for music teachers!!!.......2007-04-02
This is a wonderful book full of good ideas for growing your music studio. Some ideas aren't relevant for everyone, but there are TONS of good ideas in this book! - something for everyone.
Great Book!.......2007-03-30
I was a little skeptical when I ordered this book, but it's full of really good ideas. Philip Johnston has a good grasp on getting your studio business up to speed and keeping it there. I've read several books on the subject, but this one is by far the best. Even if you were to implement only one or two of his ideas it would be well worth the cover price.
Music Magic.......2006-03-01
Great book, full of all kinds of helpful ideas for the studio novice. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get their business up and running!
Great Resource for the Home Studio Teacher........2005-10-16
This is a very practical guide for those music teachers trying to step out of the occasional role to full time home studio status. I was very impressed with the on target tips about networking and utilizing community resources to expand the `word-of-mouth' reach of your marketing efforts. If nothing else, this guide should offer you some validation for what you've done right, and ideas for what you've overlooked. Worth every penny.
A GREAT Resource for any Music Studio!.......2005-02-20
This is a MUST HAVE book for any private music teacher! Mr. Johnstone has done a terrific job of putting together practical and USEFUL marketing techniques. After moving to a small rural town from a large suburban area, I found myself with only 6 piano students. Using the ideas from this book, I KNOW my studio will continue to grow and prosper! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone looking to have that "edge" that is needed to compete with other music teachers in their area.

Dennis Prince teams up with William Meyer, an expert at selling music items on eBay, to give information specific to the music market, including determining the condition and authenticity of items; understanding what can legally be sold, including copyrighted material and tickets; the use of an instrument (for beginners, marching bands, professionals, or collectors); and more.

This book is a quick, short introduction to using eBay for buying and selling music and related collectibles and instruments, [one of the "How to Sell ..... and Make a Fortune" series]. It appears to be aimed at those who would rather learn by doing and need only a brief tutorial on the process. This objective is met quite admirably. Those who find they desire more detailed discussions or want information on the ancillary sectors of eBay can find other books that meet these needs.
As to the "Make a Fortune" part of the title, the recommendation essentially is the familiar mantra of retail operations - Buy low, Sell High, Generate High Sales Volumes, Know the Product and Understand the Customer. The difference here is that eBay is the base of operations rather than a store and operating on eBay opens the operation to a potential audience of million. While few make a fortune in retail at this level, the book does offer much information and lists a wealth of reference sources.
The potential market is very large. According to this book 54% of U.S. households have at least one musical instrument player. And, retail music is a stable product category with staying power and sales potential.
* Over 745 million audio CDs were sold in 2003 for $11 billion
* Over 35 million concert tickets were sold in 2002 grossing $2.2 billion
* Music products [instruments, performance gear, etc.] sales in 2002 exceeded $6.9 billion
* Vintage music products and memorabilia generates tens of billions of dollars every year
Those selling in this field can be either: experts in a narrow, low volume market with high profit margins; or broadly interested in a wide, high volume market with low profit margins. Whichever part of this field one chooses to follow there are many sources of information provided in this book.
Memorabilia refers to items like t-shirts, ticket stubs, programs, etc. Once these items were considered to be disposable. However, their presence on eBay has created an expanded, eager collector base. So more items are being valued and the values are increasing.
According to this book there usually are over 650,000 music-related items listed in eBay's categories and over 500 sub-categories for Music, Musical instruments [grossing $500 million a year] and Music Memorabilia [ with 75,000 Rock-n-Roll listings every day] categories. This book claims to be the only one focused on these three areas. Some data the book presents on eBay's sales in the music categories:
* Music - 500 categories
* 700,000 listings each day
* 150,000 records listed
* Musical instruments - $500 million/ year
o 50,000 guitars listed - $1.1 B in 2002
* Musical Products - $350 million/year
* Rock-n-roll memorabilia - 70,000 listings
Chapter 2 is entitled "The History of Selling Music". This information helps one start to develop a background in the field to better understand the items being sold and to prepare for updates and changes. The chapter points to two areas of concern: Fraud and Competition.
The book states that fraud and misrepresentation are widespread, especially with Memorabilia. It is estimated that 99% of the Beatles signature items and 75% of Rock-n-Roll autographs are fake. The book recommends that such items have rock-solid appraisals from recognized specialist appraisers and a written, lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
Competition relates to the various levels of marketing, particularly of musical instruments and related equipment, The mass marketers [Wal-Mart] lower prices and make business difficult for music stores. The Internet also competes with the music stores. Fraud is rife and prices are lowered mercilessly [in the eyes of store-based merchants] In fact some instrument manufacturers forbid the sale of their instruments on the Internet and impose pricing protection for the stores.
The book discusses each sector in the music categories, addressing source information, market, current pricing and the more popular items. Pages 45 to 63 lists many information sources, sub-dvided as by instrument or type of memorabilia.
Chapter 5 discusses the necessary Business Plan focusing on marketing and sales strategies and on the financial aspects.
Chapter 6 covers building and maintaining an inventory. Chapter 7 discusses acquiring and holding on to customers and keeping them happy to generate return business. The book addresses the tasks to use eBay for selling - Listing, Payment, Shipping, etc. Chapters 10 to 12 cover the elements of becoming a music specialist in one of the categories and sub-categories. It outlines the knowledge needed and the means to keep the customers happy, and advised of one's available inventory.
The book is well-written, easy to read and has enough illustrations to convey the needed message. I would recommend this book for beginners or novices in using eBay for buying and selling music-related items on eBay.
Real-world money-making advice .......2005-02-08
This in-depth book covers the topic of selling music products on eBay, using a lot of practical examples plus a dash of humor. It's a great resource for anyone who wants to start selling CDs or instruments on eBay, giving real specifics on how to position your music merchandise effectively. It's a solid guide that's bound to generate real sales. Also, it includes excellent first-hand testimony from some of eBay's best music sellers. Highly recommended.

Ty Cohen is a GENIUS!!!.......2007-09-16
Ty Cohen's work is without a doubt - GENUIS! I would highly recommend his books, videos, etc. If you don't get it from Ty, don't get it. He is experienced, professional, intelligent and unbelievable. I couldn't believe how insightful and intelligent his work is. You should buy EVERYTHING he sells and everything DJ Cardiac makes as well. DJ Cardiac is a genius too, but Ty has been around longer.

By Far The Worst Book I've Ever Read.......2007-07-16
This book has no publishing company nor editor. It has not been edited. There are at least a hundred spelling and grammatical errors in all 68 pages of the book. Much of his advice is ambiguous and from the quality of his literature, I would be surprised if he graduated from high school. The only information I could find on the internet about the author is from his words which seem to have no merit. I contacted him in a professional manner to discuss my disdain for the book and to question him about his so called "experience", he did not have the courtesy to respond. Because of the poor writing and effort I do not have any faith that the advice given in this book is valid. Somebody would have to pay me to read another book that he wrote. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK. I wish I had done my investigating before I bought this book, I'll never trust the information given in the description again.
"Think outside the box".......2007-05-18
This book definitely helped me look at the music industry from a different angle. You can say it got me thinking outside the box. There are so many ways to make money in the music industry and this book reveals them all. Thanks!
Booking Gigs.......2007-05-18
I am an indie musician and a bit of an introvert. I had problem booking and negotiating gigs which posed quiet a problem for me. After reading this book I gained a lot of confidence simply because I became informed of the tips and tricks in the indie side of the industry. Since then, I have also recorded and released a CD!
A Great Start!.......2007-05-04
I am a do-it-yourself kinda guy. This book definitely was full of tips and tricks on how to do just that. I am an indie artist trying to make it in a newly "indie" world. This book helped me figure out just how to do that. A great read! Haven't made $500,000 yet but I am on my way!

Good.......2006-05-20
Old music vs. new, old methods vs. new methods, digital vs. analog, all these "enemies" are presented here in detail coupled with an analysis of cons and pros of every part involved. The book is a bible for those just starting in the music industry, and a revelation for people that have been in the business for a long time. New technologies and methods take over the old school and many people have a hard time adjusting, this title will help all these people get through the transition easy and without problems.

But this book is a good overview, and a great guide you should follow. If you feel stuck in the process, just give this book a glance and you'll see what you should do next. Self Help or How To Sell Music?.......2007-05-03
This book assumes one knows a lot and nothing at the same time. It assumes one knows how to write and compose music but has no idea about recording it or what an mp3 file is. If that's the case, get a book on recording. This book tries to cover everything. I was expecting a section on how to caulk the kitchen sink. I was quickly set back by all the self help direction in this book as well... talk of keeping one's work area clean and that one needs to have guts and discipline to do this business. This is not bad stuff, but way off topic. I'll get The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama for that. Respectfully, I want to know how to sell my music. I want to know who to contact, how publishing works, do's and dont's about the industry, how I might approach music supervisors and so on. This book covers these things but there is SO MUCH fluff to read through, I find myself skimming to get to the point. It has some valuable stuff for sure, but I wish there was a way to sift this thing out... it could easily lose 100 pages and still hold all the content directly related to SELLING ONES ORIGINAL MUSIC. I got more out of Richard Jay's book "How To Get Your Music in Film & TV"... 86 pages.
Not trying to be negative, just trying to shed some light on this book versus others. Get it I suppose, but get ready practice patience. Maybe this book is actually a lesson in tolerance. ;-)

"Cash Tracks..." in an indepensable guide about how to get on with the business side of being creative within the music scoring world (a side which is sorely overlooked).
It presents no end of ideas, tried and tested successfully, which can imrove your music business strategy and start you making MONEY from music. Please don't be put off by the "life is great!!!" american-ness of it all, this guy-heck, this book-is a full on money making machine. Practical, down-to-earth.
Invaluable.
Notice from the Publisher!.......2005-12-15
Just letting you know that all reviews posted before October 10, 2005 refer to a previous (now out of print) edition of this title. The new edition is completely new and updated!
Disappointing and generic.......2003-02-27
I'm pretty disappointed with this book.
It is a very good practical approach to business and marketing, but you could easily replace every instance of "music" or "jingle" with "widget," and have essentially the same book!
The author makes the assumption that every musician who can compose music already knows the construction of a jingle. He assumes that we all write jingles, we just need to know how to sell them. He in no way addresses the format, form, or content of advertising jingles.
These were the reasons I purchased this book, so I ended up getting nothing but a meandering discussion of how to promote myself.
Excellent value, well worth the money.......1999-06-21
A great introduction and simple step by step guide to working the music production business. Good solid guidelines applicable to even international readers. I have applied these techniques in New Zealand and they work very well over here! Some real gold in the setting your fee chapter. Also the focus on marketing throughout keeps you focussed on the job of selling. I highly urge anybody who is looking for an overall guide to music production business to get this book.

Average.......2006-05-15
A good book with easy but basic information contained within its pages. The book is great for people that are new to the industry but professionals might find id incomplete, and it even won't satisfy most newcomers. An overall good book by structure, content and presentation but there is another more in depth title that shines above this one. "101 Music Business Contracts - Updated Edition - Preprinted Binder / CD-ROM set containing over 100 contracts and agreements for recording artist, musicians, ... industry. Entertainment law at it's best!" by Ty Cohen is far better and features more valuable information structured in such a way that it makes it very easy for all.
Reading this book proved profitless.......2005-09-21
I regret spending my hard-earned money on this profitless book. But it might be a good starting point for younger readers aged 12-14- after all, you can't make $100,000 a year delivering newspapers! Mr. Hooper: does 'bio' really mean 'biography'? You saved me a trip to my dictionary! (and managed to pad your book with yet another banal sentence)
David Hooper's Book worth reading.......2005-03-26
I think this is a very well organized book that can be understood by everyone and doesn't pander to the intellectually elite. For someone starting out it has invaluable information and for those who have been around a while, there is still enough to keep the pages turning. A good business primer.
Music Manager
Book is thin on real ideas & strategies & VERY outdated.......2004-04-11
Sorry Misters Hooper & Kennedy, but while the title of this book seems indeed quite alluring, you can hardly make 100K by following the vague and obvious advice given in this thin and outdated volume. I've been a struggling musician for about ten years and there's not alot here I wouldn't have figured out from my own common sense.
For a real, updated look at the business, I suggest you check out Bobby Borg's Musician's Handbook, or Justin Goldberg's The Ultimate Survival Guide to the NEW music Industry - Handbook for Hell - which is the best step by step program available ANYWHERE in the world independent music business stratgies. From what other musician's tell me, this book is just a lure into the world of a music marketing company that continually seeks more $ out of a very dry source -the unsigned, independent musician.
You Can't Afford Not To Read This Book.......2004-02-04
I have been able to conjure up so many great ideas from your book that will set us apart from bands in our area and across the world.
That was money well spent.
