Global perhaps, commentary, not!.......2006-07-12
I bought this book to review as a potential classroom text.
It is a jumble of ways to misuse the Bible to support modern revisionist theology.
According to this book, inclusiveness, cultural relativism and subjective morality are the primary message of the Bible.
Other topics which pass for biblical commentary include Interclass power struggles, feminist identity and the misogynist patriarchal society, liberation theology, etc
My opinion...
Unless you are really interested in far left apologetics, save your money.
Global Bible Commentary.......2005-10-21
I got the item very soon after placing my order. And the item is in very good condition although it is from the used item list.

How to Know the Lichens (Pictured Key Nature Series)
ASIN: 0300082495 |
Amazon.com
This remarkable compendium, the first (and perhaps last) of its kind, gathers current knowledge on the North American continent's store of lichens--those hard-to-classify, symbiotic composites of fungi and other organisms such as algae and cyanobacteria.
Lichens are, admittedly, easy enough to overlook. They stand out in most people's minds only as the orange, green, or grayish patches that festoon rocks and trees in mountain regions. But they are far more widespread than that, writes research scientist Irwin Brodo. Nearly every bioregion has a complement, and the continent as a whole boasts nearly 3,600 species (of about 14,000 worldwide). The first part of this book offers a near-encyclopedic survey of these lichens' form, structure, reproductive patterns, physiology, and ecological role. The second is a keyed guide to the continent's genera and major groups, including descriptions, range maps, and photographs, the last by the noted nature photographers Sylvia and Stephen Sharnoff.
Though far too hefty to serve easily in the field, this fine book deserves a place in the collections of natural historians and plant biologists doing work just about anywhere in North America. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Lichens are a unique form of plant life, the product of a symbiotic association between an alga and a fungus. The beauty and importance of lichens have long been overlooked, despite their abundance and diversity in most parts of North America and elsewhere in the world. This stunning book--the first accessible and authoritative guidebook to lichens of the North American continent--fills the gap, presenting superb color photographs, descriptions, distribution maps, and keys for identifying the most common, conspicuous, or ecologically significant species. The book focuses on 805 foliose, fruticose, and crustose lichens (the latter rarely included in popular guidebooks) and presents information on another 700 species in the keys or notes; special attention is given to species endemic to North America. A comprehensive introduction discusses the biology, structure, uses, and ecological significance of lichens and is illustrated with 90 additional color photos and many line drawings. English names are provided for most species, and the book also includes a glossary that explains technical terms. This visually rich and informative book will open the eyes of nature lovers everywhere to the fascinating world of lichens.

a masterpiece!.......2007-10-02
I have not often encounter such a beautiful and well put together book! Every page was filled with fascinating information and pretty much all species was visually stunning with lovely photos. If you like fungi, lichens, or even plants, this book is a must have. If you love art and photography, this book will be a wow. I display it on my coffee table and it certainly deserves to be there. The price is fantastic for this huge and colorful book! I highly recommend it!!
BEAUTIFUL BOOK.......2007-01-05
This soon to be hard to find book is gorgeous! Even if you don't or have yet to take a 'liking' to lichen, this book presents views of these incredible organisms that are simply wonderful. A great book for indentifying lichens, comprehensive presentations of each of type of lichen it discusses. The photographs are worthy of framing. I simply wish there were an equivalent of this book for mosses of North America. I am so excited to add this book to my personal library!
Wonderful addition to any libary; be it an educators or for common interest........2006-12-14
I first discovered this book when I attended a workshop on lichens (I'm a teacher) two years ago. This is by far one of the most comprehensive guides to lichens in North America available and can also translate to other lichen guides throughout the world. This has been a fantastic addition to my personal library and I still pull it out and read it at home. Since I also collect and identify lichens for my classes, it is often used. I purchased three copies for my students to use during my lichen identification unit at my school. It is easy to use once you develop mastery of the terminology (helps that I'm a science teacher). I have a number of field guides and this ranks among the best. Although not useful for field work due to its size and weight, you can easily use it at home. The author obviously demonstrates his mastery of lichenology and identification techniques throughout the book. Updates can also be found on the book's website as science is an ever-changing field. This is a must have for anyone interested in lichens.
Unbelievable.......2005-04-07
Sensational resource on lichens, and the science of lichenology. Absolutely, unequivocally worth every penny. The best book in the field.
Gorgeous book.......2003-11-25
The most beatiful and informative book on lichens I've ever seen. The quality is amazing. It is a delight to read from cover to cover. And it is a true bargain at the price list.
Book Description
Roberto Duran is a sporting legend. Often called the greatest boxer of all time, he held world titles at four different weights, is the only boxer in history to have fought in five different decades, and his bouts with fellow greats like Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler have gone down in fistic folklore. He finally retired in January of 2002, at age fifty-two, with a professional record of 104 wins (69 by KO) in 120 fights. They called him
Manos de Piedra: "Hands of Stone."
Now journalist Christian Giudice has written the first-and definitive-story of Duran's incredible life both in and out of the ring. He has interviewed the fighter, his family, closest friends, and scores of his opponents to separate truth from myth.
Duran was born in utter poverty in Panama and grew up in the streets, fighting to survive. His talent with his fists soon emerged, and he had his first professional fight in 1967. Duran grew into a fighter's fighter. His hunger to destroy opponents and his willingness to take on anyone, anywhere, made him a huge favorite while his flamboyant lifestyle outside the ring made headline news.
Duran was one of the first Latino fighters to become a mainstream sports star in the United States, and his natural talent, unprecedented achievements, and longevity made an indelible mark on the world of sport.

apache tribe.......2007-08-06
My sons and I have had the honor of meeting Mr. Duran in person, in Prescott AZ and he is truly a legend inside and outside the ring. His kindness to my sons, who are amature boxers themselves, is without words. I remember as a young boy seeing him fight and any man who stood toe to toe with him was in for a short night. The book gives the reader the insight of a man who transended boxing, who cared for all the men he faced in the ring and never forgot where he came from. He was fearless in the ring yet wrongly protraded as a villian, his story is a must read and I feel privilaged to say that I have met the hands of stone!!

In the Camp.......2007-04-10
This book is riveting, especially if you are big fan of Roberto Duran like I was growing up. The author does a great job in filling in all the details of Duran's childhood and entire boxing career. From fight to fight, you feel that you are actually inside the trainning camp with Duran while he prepares for his next big fight! - you really get a sense of the true Duran, the boxing world and the business of the sport. If you love boxing like I do and Roberto Duran - you will not be able to put this book down.
Hands of Stone indeed!.......2007-03-18
Giudice does an outstanding job of telling the Duran story. His inside-the-ring genius, his contradictions, his character. Despite his complexities, Duran comes off as a thoroughly sympathetic hero. (Too bad he couldn't handle money!)
This morning I received an email from none other than Marvelous Marvin Hagler. In an answer to my question, he told me that of all the opponents he ever faced, Duran was his number one competitor! Is it any wonder that Bert Sugar rates Duran among the top 5 fighters of all time!
I couldn't put this book down.
The Legend From All Angles.......2007-01-20
Roberto Duran fought twice in Cleveland, Ohio, and for all the wrong reasons.
On August 9, 1991, he climbed into the ring for his first match after he turned away from Sugar Ray Leonard in New Orleans in 1980. Viewed by many fans and scribes as a washed-up quitter, the Cleveland bout drew passing interest.
But it actually began a surprising comeback, culminating in the defeat of Iran Barkley in 1989 and the winning of his last major world title.
There was no such storybook ending after Duran opened up on a "tomato can" on December 17, 1992. That victory was part of a decade-long series of bouts - mostly at casino convention centers - which only ended after Duran suffered severe injuries in an automobile accident and finally retired from the sport.
The two Durans the Cleveland fans witnessed are part of the complicated story that author Christian Giudice unwinds in this outstanding biography on a legendary fighter who arguably is one of the greatest pound-for-pound champions ever.
Giudice gathers information and quotes from Duran, business associates, family members, (former) friends, opponents, trainers and boxers to oftentimes give completely different recollections on one subject. Truly, it depends on what angle the person is approaching on any given topic, but Giudice takes a step back and let's the quotes do the talking.
Duran seemingly had as many personalities as ring victories. He would give the shirt off his back and hand out thousands of dollars at any given time as a modern-day Robin Hood, but was also known to insult his wife when with friends by bragging to her about his extramarital affairs.
He valued his legacy of being a great champion, but approached many of his matches with little or no serious training. And as with the final chapter of too many great champions, Duran has squandered countless millions of dollars which has left him with one marketable symbol from the past glory; his autograph.
Giudice immersed himself in searching for the real Duran. What he found may surprise many readers, but ends yet again with an athlete who conquered great odds in the field of play, but could not carry that over in the game of life.
Book Description
Expert Service-Oriented Architecture in C# 2005, Second Edition will immerse you in updated code and reference material specifically architected for Visual Studio 2005 and Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 3.0. With this book, you can get a head start on building SOA applications using the clear, conceptual discussions and practical examples provided by SOA experts Jeffrey Hasan and Mauricio Duran. The authors give fair treatment to difficult material without just glossing over it.
Most .NET-based web services are simply containers for limited RPC-style methods. This book will show you how to shift your development paradigm to create web services that process sophisticated XML messages within a secure, service-oriented, loosely coupled architecture. You'll gain deep insight into the newest release of the WSE toolkit, as this book blends theory with ample C# code samples and teaches you how to implement SOA solutions based on specifications like revised WS-Security, WS-Policy, and WS-Addressing. You'll want a copy of this second edition because
- The spirit of the second edition follows that of the successful first edition, providing clear, conceptual discussions and practical material, with unambiguous samples.
- Approximately 60% of the book has been updated, including rearchitected code and updated visual materials using Visual Studio 2005.
- The second edition is more focused on implementation by policy--rather than code--as a more efficient means for implementing solutions.
Customer Reviews:
Ignore the hype, buy for WSE 3.0.......2007-03-31
If I could rate the first half of the book separately from the second half, I'd give the first half 1 star, because it's filled with junk and hype and stupid marketecture assertions about magical things that services do that ordinary components don't. Most of these assertions are simply false, the kind of "selling-it" nonsense that usually accompanies a bleeding-edge technology. Thing is, the edge isn't bleeding for Web Services or SOA any more, and we can see through the hype pretty clearly, but Hasan hasn't caught up. So the first half of the book is pretty useless, just as it was in the first edition.
On the other hand, also just like the first edition, the second half is amazingly useful, dead-on practical, and totally hands-on. It's probably the most coherent summary of WSE 3.0 around, so the second half should get 5 stars. If you need to know how to get anything in WSE 3.0 up and running (and you should if your Web Services actually do anything significant), then the second half of this book is the first place you should look.

Book Description
Adam Raphael's ROOM SERVICE is a luxurious collection of 150 photographs of racially diverse male models lounging, bathing, and dining amid the sumptuous interiors and elegant finishes of the finest hotels of East Coast America. The young men of ROOM SERVICE are models of the highest caliber whose flawless physiques are revealed in Raphael's photographs. Because the models are photographed individually, the viewer is invited to get to know each model intimately. Aged 18 to 26, all of the models, who are both clothed and unclothed, are photographed in repose, playful, and carefree in the privacy of their hotel suites. This stylish presentation of handsome young men in equally attractive hotel settings is designed by J. C. Suarés, and includes spot illustrations by Nina Duran.
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2007-08-27
The absolute stunning beauty of Adam Raphael's latest work reduces one to such primitive exclaimations as the above.
The photographer has corralled his usual cadre of boys next door and photographed them in various locales of an upscale hotel. Aside from the luxuriousness of the setting, another difference emerges in this collection, the use of nudity. As an artist of unerring taste, though, Raphael presents nothing gratuitous or grotesque. The naked glimpses are of several shapely backsides and nothing more (and nothing more is needed). Raphael trusts the imaginations of his viewers to fill in any erotic gaps.
The book's design is magisterial, the paper luscious, the lighting ethereal.
Adam Raphael has entered the ranks of the masters. And in ROOM SERVICE he has produced not merely a masterpiece but the finest male picture book ever published.
One would be wise to purchase a copy now, as it will no doubt someday be a collector's treasure on the order of Bruce Weber's early books (and of Raphael's own FRIENDS from several years back).
THE BEST OF ITS KIND.......2007-08-05
For those who appreciate this type of photography book; it is a must have and a must addition to the collection. It is absolutely stunning and a beautiful book.
"An Open Review Letter To Adam Raphael".......2007-05-29
Dear Adam Raphael: I was so impressed by your new Male Photography book "Room Service" I just had to write you right away. I have been reviewing Male Photography books for over eight years now, but this is the first time I felt I actually had to write the photographer. You see, I am a collector, and over the years have had the fortunate luxury of viewing all the new male photography books by all the male photographers that are available, including your last two books.
Well, you have really outdone yourself this time. This new book, showcasing all your new work, is the best by far. To include 150 perfect color images in a beautifully designed book for us to enjoy is awesome. These male models are at the peak of perfection, and so beautifully photographed, with perfect lighting and shadows that they almost seem 3-Dimensional. It is certainly apparent that you are a true admirer of the male torso. Although it may be fashionable in this time period to show totally nudity, it adds to the mystique of these young and handsome models to leave something to the imagination. It is about time that young male models were photographed in settings away from the typical surroundings of old warehouses, and docks, or next to railroad tracks or water. I can just imagine these models looking back 20 years from now at these outstanding photographs and saying "Wow, look at me". And, of course, remembering how well they were treated by you, their caring photographer. What a unique and great idea to feature your models in luxury hotel settings.
This book is a true work of art, not only in the way the models are photographed, but in the books design by Paul Perlow, the unique illustrations by Nina Duran, and the creative consulting of J.C. Suares.
What makes this book great in the end is the contribution of all these creative people, but what makes this book stand out most from all the others is the author's work, in this case the photography. And Mr. Raphael, I think you are an artist in the true sense, making these naturally beautiful young men look there absolute best while sharing with us their natural masculine beauty.
This book will make one great gift for all my friends on their special occasions. Thank you again for sharing your unique talent with us. And, of course, many thanks to all your especially attractive models. I am looking forward to your next collection.
All the best, Joe Hanssen 05/2007
Luxury: Solitude in Elegant Settings.......2007-05-12
Adam Raphael continues to explore the highest plane of sensual male photography with the release of this very elegant, sophisticated book ROOM SERVICE. In his introduction Raphael speaks of his affinity for grand hotels and their prepared lush atmospheres he sees as perfect settings for the privacy of adding his extraordinarily beautiful male models as artistic and erotic accoutrements. For two years he has traveled to some of the most elegant hotels of the world, accompanied by models, and the resulting spontaneous `studios' he finds offer some of the more sensitive, quiet, private views of these carefully selected young men, completely at ease in the solitude of beauty that mirrors their personal gifts: ROOM SERVICE calls upon us to open the door to an amazingly successful portfolio.
This hefty book speaks of eloquence from the size, the cover, the design (courtesy of J. C. Suarés and Paul Perlow), the unique first few pages that open the door to full page views of handsome men before a colophon or words distract the viewer, and the added subtle art pieces by Nina Duran the quietly remind us of the title - room service delivered. And then once inside the `room' there are page after uninterrupted page of full color photographs of thirty-seven masculine, very handsome men, completely at ease with their sole observer Raphael and his camera. The results are warmly sensuous, beautifully composed images of stunning men, nude and partially clothed, asleep in soft white sheets, fresh from the shower with towel, caught in languid poses in briefs, and at times communicating directly with the photographer (and thus, us) with gazes that take the breath away. Raphael continues to avoid full frontal nudity, finding that the hints of the most private aspects of his models are in the end more erotic.
Adam Raphael is a master of understatement and never more so than in this splendid visual monograph. He capitalizes on fantasy, on textures, light and fabric, and on finding a cadre of some of the most wholesomely handsome men ever collected in a photography art book. His attention to detail makes these fine images seem like personal visual communications from men so at ease with their collaborator that each page is a sensual experience shared as a moment with the viewer. This is as fine as art photography of the male nude gets - until Raphael's next inevitable foray! Highly recommended for all audiences. Grady Harp, May 07
Book Description
Eduardo Durana psychologist working in Indian countrydraws on his own clinical experience to provide guidance to counselors working with Native Peoples. Translating theory into actual day-to-day practice, Duran presents case materials that illustrate effective intervention strategies for prevalent problems, including substance abuse, intergenerational trauma, and internalized oppression. Offering a culture-specific approach that has profound implications for all counseling and therapy, this groundbreaking volume:
* Provides invaluable concepts and strategies that can be applied directly to practice.
* Outlines very different ways of serving American Indian clients, translating Western metaphor into Indigenous ideas that make sense to Native People.
* Presents a model in which patients have a relationship with the problems they are having, whether these are physical, mental, or spiritual.
* Includes a section in each chapter to help non-American Indian counselors generalize the concepts presented to use in their own practice in culturally sensitive ways.
Customer Reviews:
The incompetent may be allergic to this book.........2007-02-21
Duran books spark diverse feelings. I found this and his prior work superb and profound, as have years of graduate students working in the field. Its still the best book of its kind for helping those with multigenerational trauma, both with Native Americans and other victimized populations. Yet one of the reviewers above, a woman using the innovative title "Anonymous" was clearly upset by both this book and Duran's Buddha in Redface earlier contribution. A quick look at her reviews sees her self-identify as "of Cherokee lineage" but in another as a "non-native person like myself"; she reads Lara Croft books even though "this book sucked" was the verdict for one of them; she loved the movie Hidalgo and hates her coffee pot. She says she headed a behavioral health unit with Native American clients. This rare allergic reaction to Eduardo Duran's continuing contributions is notble in that it truly does symbolize the many less than competent care managers and providers who for so long misunderstood and mistreated their diverse clients; who may lack the wisdom to know what they don't know. This confusion as to identity and capacity may be threatened by the clarity and substance of Eduardo Duran's books. They may see themselves and their shortcomings in these pages and, as Hans Toch says, if the shoe fits it will hurt.
Healing the Soul Wound.......2007-01-19
This is a great example of the kinds of books that will actually assist in the quest for cultural competence. It is written in clear and concise language and the cultural interventions appear to be appropriate to the circumstances.
An excellent and practical guide to working with Native Peoples.......2007-01-02
As a psychiatrist who has treated and worked with Indigenous people in both New Zealand and the United States, I can honestly say that Eduardo Duran's recent book, Healing the Soul Wound, has not only greatly influenced my way of working with Indigenous people but has changed my way of viewing the world. In this book, he artfully and intelligently weaves Native American, Jungian, and Freudian concepts and wisdom with touches of mysticism and philosophy. I found his insights into the dreamtime to be profound and extremely helpful..."we have lost the ability to communicate with the Sacred because our egos have become so full of themselves." He goes on to say that through our dreams the Creator has found a way to get around our egos and talk to us. I was particularly struck by his thoughts on the meaning of suffering and the healing of the soul, not only of our patients, but of ourselves.
Stereotypic internalized racism as projected metaphor.......2006-10-09
Duran's first book, NA Postcolonial Psychology was a ground breaker. This most recent book offends on many levels. The idea that all native people must return to traditional ways in order to heal makes the assumption that they don't have within them or around them what they need in order to do so without some hierarchical psuedo-shamanist wannabe medicine man with a degree in clinical psychology spoon feeding them. Then, to make matters worse, traditional medicines are taught to be used by 20 years worth of psychology interns without benefit of having walked that path. Leads to multiple generations of psychologists culturally misappropriating traditional ways under the guise of "helping cure" Native people. And what's this bunk about medicine people being the ones to use drugs and alcohol because they have the "power" to do so? Not sure that has anything to do with traditional native american worldview, but may have something to do with some seriously unhealthy practices. Different native people have different practices and understanding of medicine. Making blanket pan-Indian generalizations that smack of new age ideas isn't healing. There's a certain feel of cultural voyeurism that is promoted in this book and it is not recommended. I was a Director of a behavioral health clinic within the urban American Indian population, and am a psychologist. There are many ways to promote healing in communities and among people, and many ways to train cross-culturally, and this is not a book, philosophy or trend I would recommend.
Transformative Therapy.......2006-04-07
This new book by Dr. Duran includes case studies of his integrating shamanic healing techniques with traditional Western therapies. Dr. Duran's writing is intelligent, brilliant, and groundbreaking in scope and content. Though the clients he works with are Native Americans, his method is a challenge for each of us to find our mythic structures and to use them to mature the flat world view of Western materialism. Again and again his clients are struck by how familiar their work is with Dr. Duran. They literally reclaim a conscious relationship to their souls and to their mental and spiritual health. This book is a further development of his first book which was a theoretical consideration of postmodern neocolonial therapeutic models. This book actually introduces healing practices which demonstrate explicitly his theoretical viewpoint. If you read Dr. Duran's second book, "Buddha in Redface", this is what happened to the therapist in that book when he "grew up". It is a book of hope, elegance, humor, and finally of meaning.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-10-01
This book was better than I expected. If you don't like Tiger you can skip the Tiger stories, if you like Tiger they're fun. The book emphasizes having fun, dreaming big, keeping it simple, and having a positive attitude. I read the whole book, then started going through it myself, and it's really helped my game. It's also inspired me with different approaches and attitudes for practicing, and teaching my kids and their friends about golf. Most of all it's helped my own game.
If any of the following describe you, I'd recommend this book - Tiger fan, need practice ideas, want to have more fun 'playing' golf, teaching golf or learning yourself, or are just looking for a good golf book.
Just as good for adults as for kids.......2004-09-27
For every book on golf instruction, there are thousands of people who are adding constantly to their collective bagage when it comes to playing the game. This bagage we like to insist is necessary, because, after all, we fear what will happen without 101 ways to fix a push-slice.
The thing is, children can play golf, often better and with more enjoyment than adults, probably because of the exact opposite reason: they carry no or very little bagage. There are things they get frustrated with, but their minds are not overly bogged down. Certainly not nearly to the same level as adults.
The method outlined in Rudy Duran's book helps first and foremost adults to learn to unfetter their minds and learn to take a simpler approach to the game. Then, and only then, should an adult try and take on teaching a kid. The 4 area/5 step method is one that will help most anyone to get back in the game and teach others by going against many of our most basic instincts: avoiding excess knowledge.
The book is filled with the author's memories of teaching a young Tiger Woods, but many of these sections are carefully seperated from the main text to allow someone not looking for a trip down memory lane to get strait to the meat of the book. It is also easy to read, not only for adults, but also for kids in upper elementary and middle school levels, meaning you could probably let your son or daughter have a go at it even if you have no personal interest in the game yourself.
The biggest problem with the book is that it seems a tad oversimplified, especially in regards to things like grip and alignment. These two basic elements of the swing might have been done in a tad more detail, but it seems that the author is relying on this as being common knowledge for adults and something that an instructor will pass on to kids. A few more notes on shotmaking would have also helped. Imagination on the practice tee or course can get you quite a ways, but a few extra hints, like how to draw and fade the ball accurately, might have helped.
Not Just For Teaching Kids the Game of Golf.......2002-08-16
The first thing I did when I found this book on a bookstore shelf was scan it to make sure it wasn't some book about trying to mold my kid into a money-spinning tour pro, like so many tennis stars' dads. Thank goodness, it is not. In fact, if anything, this book is the opposite: it is about having fun playing golf, especially if you are a beginner, whether you are a child or not.
Tiger, the book says, loved playing the game as a 4-year-old, and he just happened to have incredible instincts and skill from a very early age. What Duran added to Tiger's package was some guidance and direction via his 5-step fundamental program, and those steps and the accompanying drills can help beginners and high handicappers of any age learn the game in an enjoyable, low-stress fashion. If anything, Duran says he LEARNED from young Tiger, and passes those lessons of uncritical childlike joy in the game on to beginners everywhere.
It is an added bonus that Duran is enjoyable to read, with his easygoing style and anecdotes about an early Tiger, and the photos of Tiger circa 4 years old and up are a neat addition for golf fans.
So this book is really a balance... a little bit of "young Tiger nostalgia" and a lot of golf instruction, philosophy and etiquette presented in an easy-to-digest fashion. If you're buying it for the latter, you won't likely be disappointed and in fact will likely find more than your money's worth here. If you're mainly looking for early Tiger bio info, you'll find the pickings supplemental if not downright thin.

Just an Average Writing Advice Book.......2006-09-30
ASK THE PROS: SCREENWRITING is a book presented by the people behind the Final Draft screenwriting software. I saw an advertisement for the book in some promotional materials that came with my copy of Final Draft and since I liked the software so much I figured ASK THE PROS: SCREENWRITING would be better than some of the screenwriting books I have read. I was sorely disappointed.
Through the course of the book 101 questions that beginning or struggling screenwriters have asked are answered by a "panel" of professionals. The "panel" consists of screenwriters, tv writers, producers, development and studio execs, readers, story editors, agents, managers, attorneys, and mentors. The book is divided in chapters according to the type of professionals answering the question, for instance legal questions are answered by attorneys, development questions are asked and answered in the section with producers and development and studio execs, etc.
Though there are some specific questions, most of the 101 questions are general: How do I get an agent?; How do you come up with ideas?; What makes a screenplay great?; etc. I've read much of the same type of material in other books and there isn't anything new here. Not only that, but just about every question asked has two opposing answers given. Writing is a process and there is no one way to write. All good writers know that, but apparently the editors weren't marketing this book towards good writers. If you finish the entire thing (as I did--once I start a book I have to read it through) the only non-conflicting advice you will receive is that if you want to write you should try to write a little everyday, screenwriters should read a lot, most scripts are rejected because of bad writing, producers and studio execs will listen to pitches by new talent, you need to get an agent, and winning a screenwriting contest doesn't mean you have a script that is worthy of being made into a movie.
I love Final Draft, but if you want to read this book, I'd check it out from the library and spend your money on watching another movie or buying an actual screenplay.

What Were They Thinking?.......2004-08-18
If you're a screenwriter and have ever thought, "what were they thinking?" this book is for you. "Ask the Pros: Screenwriting" is a total insider's POV of Hollywood. Written in an informative Q&A style, chapters include answers by film and TV writers; producers, development and studio execs; readers/story editors; agents and managers and even attorneys. Also there's a mentors section. If you can handle "the truth about Hollywood," this is a must-read.
Finally, real insight into the process.......2004-06-29
One of the best books I've read on the subject of screenwriting. Not a "how to" on the technical aspects of the craft (although there is a wonderful section on this included at the end for the novice), the interviews illustrate the battle that all writers face: a blank page. Written with humor and honesty from some of the best in the business, this book is highly recommended for anyone who truly loves to write.
Must-have for screenwriters.......2004-06-15
The book contains lots of different opinions on the business, which is why I think it is so useful. Since there's
no one way to break into the movie business, this book is invaluable. You've never seen a book with so many pros offering their thoughts on the subject of writing and selling to Hollywood. A must-have book for any writer interested in breaking into the movies.
Book Description
This book shows that it is necessary to understand intergenerational trauma and internalized oppression in order to understand Native Americans today. It makes Native American ways of conceptualizing the world available to readers.
This book presents a theoretical discussion of problems and issues encountered in the Native American community from a perspective that accepts Native knowledge as legitimate. Native American cosmology and metaphor are used extensively in order to deal with specific problems such as alcoholism, suicide, family, and community problems. The authors discuss what it means to present material from the perspective of a people who have legitimate ways of knowing and conceptualizing reality and show that it is imperative to understand intergenerational trauma and internalized oppression in order to understand the issues facing Native Americans today.

Ground breaking book on understanding issues related to Native Americans.......2006-10-09
Excellent book, those written more recently have different agenda, but this book was excellent in terms of creating a way to understand issues specific to Native people and counseling.
Insight into Systemic-Abuse Trauma.......2006-02-02
It's been many years since the first time I read this book, it was, and remains, a very powerful and very relevant analysis of anger turned inward in the Native American community. It is, nevertheless, a work that confronts a very sensitive issue in the United States of America - the impact on current generations of genocidal colonization practices against long-established Native American communities by European colonizers. Do not read this book if you believe the Americas were pristine, unpopulated lands waiting to be "discovered" by Columbus, or Erikson, or any other European. Do read this book if you want to understand why other colonized cultures have turned to violence and dogma to seek revenge for the foreign imposition of arbitrary and intentionally destructive rulerships.
An important book for ALL counselors and therapists.......2003-12-11
This is one of the best books that I have ever read. I see it as basic material for any counselor or therapist. While the focus is on Native Americans, it is relevant for work with clients of all cultures. The discussion of intergenerational trauma and the soul wound is particularly well done. Highly readable and it can change the way you practice. Profound!
Finally a book from "the other side".......2001-07-27
This book gives a brilliant insight into the issues that Native Americans are facing as a colonialized people. I don't believe America as a whole has come to the realization of just what it did to the indigenous people and the traumatizing effect the American Dream has had on the original inhabitants. To make matters worse, these people are normally treated by individuals that only come from the Newtonian-Descartian worldview of present day mainstream psychology. When treating people from another cultural background, you need to take into account WHERE they are coming from, and what their worldview are. To not do so, is just to continue the cultural genocide that has been going on for far too long. A highly recommendable book.
Native American Postcolonial Psychology.......2001-01-26
The authors have been able to finally delineate some of the issues facing the Aboriginal community the world over. Never before has addiction been addressed in the manner we see here in the "Spirit of Alcohol" chapter. Finally, this entity called alcohol (addiction) has been named and allows for the reader to establish a relationship with it that helps in the addictive process.
As if this wasn't enough, the author has recently published "Buddha in Redface" which is similar material put into story form. The story is compelling and captivating. These two works complement each other. Must reading for anyone in the counseling, field or for those interested in looking beneath the surface.
