Book Description

Colette peters, the celebrated queen of the confectionary arts, unveils an inspiring resource for serious home bakers, professional chefs, and aficionados of Colette's incredible edible architecture. The ingenious cake decorator - whose miraculous and luscious concoctions have appeared everywhere from White House Christmases to royal weddings - presents a master class in cake design and decoration, alongside an all-new selection of her own cake designs. With Cakes to Dream On, Colette's inspired creations can now be rendered into show-stopping cakes of your own.

Cakes to Dream On reveals the secrets to fashioning gorgeous and utterly distinctive cakes for all occasions - whether it's an opulent marriage reception (the majestic Ivory Wedding Cake) or a fanciful children's party (the whimsical Homage to Dr. Seuss). Colette presents designs for cake architecture ranging from the imperial splendor of Dolce de Medici, to the elegant grace of Bride's Vintage Cameo, to the topsy-turvy daydream of Mad Tea Party.

Colette begins with the foundations: she illuminates step by step the process of constructing a multitiered cake, from determining serving sizes and choosing appropriate cake pans to making fillings, and ultimately stacking layers so they don't tumble off the table. Cakes to Dream On also discloses insider tricks of the trade: Colette's easy-to-follow instructions in techniques such as sugarwork, gumpaste, brush embroidery, and piping will help readers recreate the spectacular effects of this singular confectioner's toolbox.

Bakers - and their enthusiastic audiences - will discover that these sensual masterpieces tantalize the palate as much as they do the eye. Colette's cake recipes include the Coco-Loco Cake, an alluring marriage of coconut and coffee; the Meringue Buttercream and its luscious lemon, raspberry, and mocha variants; and the ambrosial caramel-tinged Heavenly White Cake.

As breathtaking as Colette's cake works appear, her clear explanations of technique are meant to stimulate readers' creative instincts and give them ideas for crafting their own distinctive confections. With more than 150 dazzling full-color photographs illustrating both processes and finished presentations, and more detailed instruction than ever before, Cakes to Dream On will inspire readers to create their own mouthwatering masterpieces. Colette's master class is truly a launchpad for cake lovers' own confectionary visions.

5 out of 5 stars Colette is wonderful.......2007-09-03

I love all of Colette's books. I have been successful in recreating many of her wonderful designs. If you are looking for a decent instructive book on how to recreate special event cakes, buy any of her books.

2 out of 5 stars Cake catalog.......2007-08-17

When I bought this book,I knew it would be very advanced, but I was very wrong. This book is a cake catalog of the things that Colette Peters can do. The pictures are great, and there are a lot of ideas, but very little explaining and how-to photos. I thought I would learn how to make crooked cakes, but it turns out I learned more from a blog than this book.If you want ideas,it's great,if you want directions, search somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Fun & Easy!!.......2007-07-23

I bought this book for my mom for mother's day and asked her to make me the seashell shaped cake for my birthday yesterday and she was pretty intimidated at first not thinking she'd be able to pull off such a realistic work of art..especially because she had never even used fondant before...but she soon found out it was WAYYY EASIER than she ever imagined! :) Collette really breaks down the process for the common kitchen dweller. You don't have to be Picasso to create these masterpieces. This book provides excellent descriptions, precise illustrations and absolutely gorgeous photographs! 5stars!! :)

If you ask me if I'd buy it again; I'd say yes!!

3 out of 5 stars Sorry, I hate to say..........2005-10-15

I am someone who really admires Colette's work. I had bought all of her cake books except this one and "Colette's Christmas" (going for $200 now as opposed to the usual $30+-... what does that tell you about her popularity??) (YOU GO GIRL) However, I just received Colette's Cakes and am a little disappointed. This must be one of Colette's 1st books. These cakes offered no real challenge at all for me. Hey, I guess you have to start somewhere. Colette has grown and developed so much!! I really am one of her biggest fans!! Just thought you might want to know this book is a little light on the creative side, compared to Colette's work we know and love today!! :) P.S. - Her Chocolate Bourbon Cake Recipe in her book "Colette's Birthday Cakes" is UNBELIEVABLY delicious!!! I made the cover cake and was SO "THE HERO" at that party!! Thanks Colette!! :D

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-09-07

This book gives a lot of information on how to do the cakes and the necessary tools needed, but some of the cakes were just, my daughter's view "just awful!"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Colette has done it with this one.......2007-04-06

There are so many whimsical cake designs that it's hard to choose one. I had the pleasure of taking a class at Colette's shop in New York and got to see some of the designs in person. The attention to detail is amazing, and the colors are so vibrant. I absolute love the fish cake on the cover but the purse cake is my favorite.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2007-04-03

This book has lots of great ideas. Its just not what I expected. I love colette's newer work and i think shes incredibly talented BUT this book lacks INTEREST.The best cake was the one on the cover.. Also the cakes seem extremely time consuming using tons of Fondant. I hate to sound so negative because there are good ideas but i dont think i'll be making many of these cakes. But i will use some of the techniques she uses.

4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-05-23

This book gives me something to work up to. Initially it is a little intimidating to the novice decorator (such as myself), but Colette Peters does a great job of breaking down the instructions so that it seems easier than it looks. Even if you are not crazy about every design in this book, it is sure to inspire.

2 out of 5 stars not fabulous.......2006-02-23

I wasn't expecting a show book, I was expecting more of a birthday cake book, that you can actually do something with. Oh sure you can do these cakes in here... but would you want to?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent decorating book.......2005-09-05

Colette's books are outstanding. She explains in great detail. Some of her cakes are a little elaborate for me but I can always take a few things for each cake and use them to make a stunning, yet simple cake. I have always had wonderful results with the recipes in her books.

5 out of 5 stars Helped Us Get Pregnant! .......2006-01-13

I'm 39- my husbands 43 - and we had all but given up hope on getting pregnant. We were about to start seeing a fertilty expert, when a woman in my office told me about this book. She was my age, followed the plans and conceived within 7 months. I decided to give it a try! I used the nutrition advice, diet advice, and made some of the lifestyle changes, as well as changing some habits that I was surprised to learn could affect my fertility. Just as I was about to give up hope - I FOUND OUT I"M PREGNANT! Yay! It took about 8 months - but we did it on our own, without any fertilty experts. This book is well worth the price - and it's worth giving it a try before you sign off for the expensive IVF or other treatments. I read some of the other reviews before buying and they almost convinced me not to - but my friend was so sure it would help me, ( she had given her copy to her sister-in-law!) I decided to buy it anyway. I'm so glad I did! It wasn't scary - but it was realistic and made me see how important small changes can be! Buy it! It might work for you too! Good LUCK!

Don't waste your money! It states the obvious. Hey, if you want to get pregnant, don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Nothing else about this book useful...

1 out of 5 stars This book is not for the average couple..........2005-12-26

Aleksandra is obviously involved in the publication of this book somehow. Why this moron feels the defensive need to attack other reviewers is beyond me, and downright pathetic. Why do you have to call other people uneducated? Isn't the average reader allowed to post their opinions? You're a desperate loser and a pathetic excuse for a fellow human.

My wife and I bought this book last year hoping it would give us some basic answers to some very basic questions. I agree that the fertilization of a hamster egg is of little consequence to the average couple. We found our money was better spent on "Taking Control of Your Fertility." It offered us very basic information. We were pregnant the following month. Spend your money there. Don't listen to the agenda-pushing moron below!

I enjoyed reading Colette Baron-Reid's book. I would suggest it to any one who would like to find their path. Enjoy the humor, enjoy the insite.

1 out of 5 stars What the....?.......2007-08-17

I was so disappointed with this book, and extremely disappointed that it got 5-star reviews. If I had known that this was just a woman's personal story and NOT a guide to recovering intuition, I never would have purchased it.

The author's personal story is 3/4 of the book. THREE QUARTERS. Parts were OK, a little was interesting, but come on, I did not buy this book to read about her troubled and sordid life. I've got my own life for that, lol. I wanted a book that would help me increase my own intuition. When I finally got past her story, all that was left was a list of very basic things we all need to do in life anyway, most of which I had already done. Not one thing in this book was helpful to me at all.

Disappointed, but I'll get over it. There are a few authors out there who actually write about increasing your intuition and psychic abilities. This woman doesn't happen to be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful! A MUST HAVE FOR ALL!.......2007-08-02

This is the best book written to date relating to opening your intuition.
Colette's own true story in the early part of this book IS truly inspiring, her way with words are as angelic as she. This book will become your companion for Colette takes the reader on an incredible journey of sharing her experiences, and learning and a reawakening of your soul and your intuition with so much love,The exercises she provides to open your intuition presented here are incredibly life changing .I keep finding myself returning to this book...I went to an event in Boston,Mass a few weeks ago where Colette was the co-guest,she should have been the main headliner for she made the show shine..What a vibrant, energetic, loving caring woman..after the show I was afforded the generosity of having my book signed by her(1st in line)and she didn't rush me along like other authors do,she is very, very kind, loving, patient and a beautiful lady with a magnificent soul and her energy vibrates at such a high frequency, wonderfully beautiful energy..All heart and soul and then some!
She personalized my book signing,a rarity these days. This is a must have book for everyone,I cannot state this enough.Hay House please continue with more editions, for this book is of great importance for all.Thank you Colette for one of greatest times in my life.I look forward to more books from this author and I highly recommend her meditation cd-Journey through the Chakras < 5 out of 5 stars Honest, Heartfelt, Timeless.......2007-07-31

All of these adjectives describe Colette Baron-Reids candid, heartwarming book Remembering the Future: The Path to Recovering Intuition.

Colette tackles the slippery job of detailing some heady, gossamer-type topics with casual aplomb, and girl-next-door humor.

She has an inviting voice that encourages both greenhorn and veteran intuitives to venture out into new horizons of perspectives within the field of soul-perception.

I gather that one of Colette's objectives in writing this book was to restore the arena of psychic ability/intuitive strengths back to its original organic grace. She has succeeded remarkably in achieving this goal.

It takes guts to be as candid as she has been in the telling of her journey - kudos Colette, for expressing yourself with class and for your contribution to de-mystifying a much misunderstood arena.

5 out of 5 stars "Awakening Intuition".......2007-07-25

Colette shares her experiences that led to her surrendering to what she already knew to be true. She was blessed with the gift of intuition, and her service was to accept it and share it. The first part of the book is her story. I enjoyed reading her story, it's really interesting. Just because she's intuitive (she prefers not to be labeled psychic because of the stigma that goes along with it.)doesn't mean that she's had things easy. There were plenty of times when her intuition was blocked and she experienced some painful events. She talks about how it left her and when it returned. And, being ituitive never guaranteed that she'd always make the right choices.

The second part of the book is about unblocking (recovering) your intuition. The remaining chapters are on 'The Seven Spiritual Keys' -advice and excercises you can do to put yourself in a better position to access/ recover your intuition. This section of the book is what I'll be re-reading and studying. I found so much good information here, not just about how to be more intuitive, but how to be more spiritual which seems to automatically strengthen your intuition.

Colette says that intuition is "a natural sixth sense that is bestowed on everyone -Without exception." It's just that we're all at very different levels with it. She likens it to her being in the olympic category. (While I think most of all the rest of us are somewhere around the high school gym level.)

I learned a lot from this book, and am looking forward to studying/ excercising the seven spiritual keys.

Colette Rossant's privileged childhood was marked by tragedy and dislocation. Her father, the Egyptian descendant of Sephardic Jews who eventually settled in Cairo, met her French mother in Paris, where he was the European buyer for his father's department store. He died in 1939 when Colette was only 7, and her mother then left her in Cairo with her grandparents. She returned three years later to enroll Colette in a convent school in the hope that her daughter would convert to Catholicism, much to the chagrin of her in-laws. Although Rossant's memoir of these wrenching events is often sad, it's leavened by a wonderfully sensuous evocation of Middle Eastern life in the 1930s and '40s, including recipes for the savory foods that nurtured her childhood: semits (soft pretzels with a sesame seed crust), ful medamas (a fava bean stew), and sambousek (a golden, cheese-filled pastry). The warmth of her grandparents and their Arab servants softened the impact of her thorny relationship with an often capricious mother, whose sharp edges Rossant does not sentimentalize, even in the chapter about her dying days. Returning to Cairo in 1997, the author realizes that, despite the absence of her mother during those crucial girlhood years, she had been blessed by "a city and a family that nurtured me and gave me a strong identity." --Wendy Smith

Book Description

"Matthew's presence transports me back to the Cairo kitchen, where I am tasting the ful that Ahmet, the cook, prepared and helping Grandmaman Marguerite mix dough while she sings songs to me in Arabic. Her family pride was profoundly linked to the kitchen, so when I attempted to make sambousek once for my friends
and did not follow her recipe for this cheese-filled golden dough faithfully, she was outraged. "This recipe is at least
hundreds of years old. You do not change it!" she shouted. I see her standing at the stove, a diminutive woman
usually dressed in black. Her thick, curly, henna-dyed hair was pulled upward in a large chignon; there was always
a lock of hair escaping that she would try, again and again and without success, to push back into her chignon. My daughter Marianne, who looks like her, has the same gesture of trying to push a lock of curly dark hair behind her ear. I smile as I watch the curl fall down in front of her eyes."

4 out of 5 stars A Cute Memoir of a Book.......2002-06-29

I found this book at a landmark bookstore on Picadilly Street in London, England. It was titled APRICOTS ON THE NILE, A Memoir With Recipes. I just realized via a search on Amazon that the title is different here in the USA. I like the English title better. This book is a 'must get' for anyone who cooks. There will be some recipes that sound "ugh", but many are mouth watering. Personally, I liked the Tomato Salad(s), Roast Chicken on a Bed of Leeks, Meatballs with Apricot Sauce, Angel Hair Pasta with Nuts, Vegetable Salad, Traditional Hummus, Christmas Four-Meat Pate, Lentil Soup, and Roast Leg of Lamb. The book is more than just recipes, though. You will be taken on a cultural trip through Cairo, Egypt and Paris, France through the eyes of a little girl & a woman who has not lost sight of her ancestral heritage. It's a quick and enjoyable read where you'll be thrust into memories of a wonderful childhood...try it, you'll like it. Smiles :)

4 out of 5 stars Lovely memoir with recipes.......2001-02-25

This is a lovely little memoir with recipes. Colette Rossant is reminiscing about her childhood years growing up with her Jewish Egyptian grandparents in their mansion in Cairo during WWII. This poor little rich girl who was abandoned by her French mother, grew closer to the kitchen, and the cook Ahmed. Colette remembers many of the special recipes prepared by Ahmed and incorporates them into this nostalgic memoir of her childhood days. This is a lovely and sentimental memoir about the Egyptian belle epoque that also includes some savory Egyptian recipes with a gourmet twist.

5 out of 5 stars Want to know about Egypt? Read this book.......2000-10-26

This book is not only charming but is beautifully written. I had tears in my eye as I read it. The recipes are mouth watering and I ran to buy some Egyptian ingredients to try the recipes. Colette Rossant gives an evocative picture of the life of a Jewish family during second world war.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome blend of memories and good food.......2000-01-01

If you are like me, you enjoy reading cookbooks that are more than just compilations of recipes but also include evocative text that recreates another time and place. "Memories of a Lost Egypt" is such a book. The author's vivid and touching reminiscences of her childhood often center on food and her relationships with her family's cooks, and she skillfully interweaves her narrative with recipes for the delicious dishes she savored and learned to prepare.

Another Middle Eastern cookbook that I treasure is Sonia Uvezian's "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen: A Culinary Journey through Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan." It too evokes a strong sense of time and place, and it is filled with outstanding recipes.

4 out of 5 stars The Sephardic Answer to "Miriam's Kitchen".......1999-10-06

I immensely enjoyed this book - my own family having lived in Alexandria during that time, it helped fill in many of the gaps in my own families story. Just as "Miriam's Kitchen" takes you into the life and traditions of an Askenazi family, this beautiful book conveys the feelings of family, food and tradition of Sephardic families masterfully. It is very easy to loose track of these bonds with family members now being scattered all over the world and this book is a gentle yet persuasive reminder that it is worth every bit of effort to keep our traditions alive so that our children will have strong roots and identities! The book only looses one star because I was a little disappointed with the recipes in the book since most of them are not kosher.

Book Description

Internationally renowned spiritual intuitive/recording artist Colette Baron-Reid has used the guided meditation on this CD as the foundation for intuitive development in her seminars and workshops. She created this program with the intention of taking you, the listener, on a creative-visualization exercise—a journey through the chakras, the seven steps of ever-expanding awareness.

Starting at the first chakra, with its corresponding gemstone, and then traveling through each subsequent chakra, you’ll be able to clear, reenergize, balance, and restore these powerful energy centers, resulting in an overall sense of well-being.

This is my favorite chakra clearing cd. The visualization and calming voice is so peaceful. So peaceful I often fall asleep. The imaging is wonderful to get lost in.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful guided meditations.......2007-08-29

This is a wonderful guided meditation CD. I'm a fan of Colette, but I'm also a very visual person and her particular imagery on this CD is so easy to see and so beautiful, you should definitely give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven !!!.......2007-08-23

The music is great and change with subtlety from one chakra to the other. Her voice is relaxing and she doesn't speak a lot, giving you time to experience each chakra. The scenario for chakras 1 to 4 is the same and then she takes you higher and higher from chakras 5 to 7, to end up in the stars with your guide pouring white light on the top of our head. The feeling is incredible. As a bonus she sings a beautiful song at the end of the CD.

Each time I play this meditation I can really feel a difference in my energy. My heart is open, my body grounded, my mental calm and I have the sensation to be connected with the spirit realms. What else could you ask for in just one CD ?

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST!.......2007-08-02

I had the pleasure to meet Colette in Boston,Mass on July 15th..just a few wks ago...and had never heard of her-I went to the event to see Sylvia Browne and let me tell you Colette with her vibrant, loving, energetic, truthful self MADE that event a most beautiful experience~She was the star of the event.I also highly recommend Colette's book Remembering The Future < <--A MUST READ for everybody. She signed my book and was so loving and kind, her energy took my breath away in every way.I could not wait to get home to hear her cd & to read her book.Thank you Colette for reawakening our soul.God Bless you.

5 out of 5 stars the best.......2007-07-18

I have another chakra cd i was listening to but this will now take its place. This is so soothing and empowering to listen to. Colette's wonderful voice walks you through identifying, bathing in and adjusting each of the 7 central chakra points. Wonderfully relaxing imagery and her soothing vocals lend themself to this marvelous cd. Is now one of my favourites and most helpful.

To compile the information presented here, the authors devoted much time over several decades researching numerous sources. This fourth edition includes many new trademarks, many additional companies, and brings up to date the many changes in company ownership during the last decade. , over 2200 marks, 6" x 9"

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not Up to Date.......2007-10-15

This is a good book for American Hallmarks BUT, it is extremely out-of-date. Also, many entries do not have a picture of the mark, making identification difficult. There must be a better book out there somewhere!

5 out of 5 stars Silver information.......2007-01-12

This is a "must have" for anyone who collects, sells or loves sterling silver.

5 out of 5 stars silver collecting American antique.......2007-01-04

this is the book to have if you are an antique silver collector. Wonderful addition to my silver library

5 out of 5 stars 5TH EDITION.......2006-11-04

This is the 5th edition of one of the most inclusive and readable books on American silvermakers. A lot of encyclopedic silver books are mostly concerned with 18th or early 19th makers, this book includes 19th and 20th century makers with their marks and information about each one. My 2nd edition is worn and I'm delighted to have this new one.

5 out of 5 stars Really good on the details!.......2003-08-17

I have found this to be of immediate value in figuring out who made what. No, it doesn't have all the answers, but covers most things pretty well, and certainly better than any other reference I have. A must for any serious collector or dealer of American silver.

Those who knit, crochet, or embroider have long had sources to which to turn for in-depth instructions on specific stitches and stitch combinations. Now there is such a reference for the sewer--an encyclopedic approach to gathering, shirring, ruffling, tucking, pleating, and quilting and their myriad variations. Filled with hundreds of diagrams and crisp black-and-white photos, this volume explains in detail how to achieve a tremendous range of three-dimensional fabric effects. This is not a book of particular projects; this is a book of instruction and inspiration for anyone who has ever wielded needle and thread. --Amy Handy

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a book to have for everyone interested in sewing!.......2007-09-19

If you are a "fabric-junky" and always look out for new techniques and methods to make your next sewing project even more special, this is a book you'll love! The book contains a lot of great pictures of many different types of fabric-manipulation to inspire you and good and detailed descriptions of "how to do it yourself". The different types of manipulation include gathering, ruffles, flounces, smocking, tucking, pleating, cording and many more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of what can be done with fabric.......2007-09-10

This book is exciting for anyone who thinks fabric is a creative medium, whether for visual art or unique clothing. The diagrams and pictures make it a truly valuable resource. The only drawback is that it's all in black and white (plain muslin on plain muslin) and sometimes the pictures would be clearer if there were some color. So realistically it's only 4.5 stars; but since nobody out there has made a book quite like this, I'll cut it some slack.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind!!.......2007-09-10

I love this book.
I go back to it all the time as a reference.
It gives you many ideas!

5 out of 5 stars Best sewing book ever!.......2007-08-21

I LOVE this book. I dispaired of finding anything new or interesting, but this is it! Don't just take fabric and make it into a garment (or a slipcover, or placemats, or...)--take fabric and make it into different fabric. Twist it, turn it, tuck it, pleat it, double it, gather it, this way, that way, round, square, triangular, smocking, shark's teeth, cartridge pleats: enough for anyone. This is an idea book, and now my head is so full of them they're pouring out the ends of my fingers! Fun, fun, fun. Thank you Colette Wolff.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Manipulating Fabric.......2007-08-14

This book is all I thought it would be. The illustrations are very clear and being in creams and whites makes the designs stand out. This book will be of great use to me.
