5 out of 5 stars Dynamite Comes in Small Packages.......2007-10-19

They say dynamite comes in small packages, and this book is proof. Built on the premise of "as a man thinks, so is he," this little but mighty book is filled with inspiration on the subjects of health, wealth, following our dreams, and more. It's diminutive size makes it portable and easy to access for "instant" gratification. The author's collection of wisdom, encouragement and guidance from many exceptional people provide a comprehensive coverage of it's subjects. One of my favorite passages is a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (on pg 57): "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step." While I don't quite agree with the theory that (all) disease is caused by negative thought, I do agree that there's a great deal we can do to heal ourselves and to be joyful regardless of our circumstances. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing this book for yourself and for gifts. You will find yourself reading it over and over again. Well worth a full purchase price!

NOT EVEN Stupid people should buy this - heck especially not them, they might believe it. This books tells you that you can wish for anything and the universe will give it to you - and the author believes that a person raped is a person that wanted to be raped. The Jewish people killed by Nazi Germany and vicitms of Genocide wanted to be killed.

I have wished this book away for 6 months and it still has not gone away. See, the concept is just dense.

3 out of 5 stars The Secret that will not change your life..........2007-10-18

Anybody who thinks that reading this book will instantly change his/her life is, allow me to let you in on a little secret, Wrong. The book is well meaning and attempts to positively influence our thought process and how we veiw the world. Under most circumstances positive thinking can positively influence our day to day lives; however, as many other critical reviews point out, our thoughts can't be exclusively held responsible for what happens to us.
The Secret is an easy read but should not be taken too seriously. If it was as simple as the Secret outlines we could all sit around our house, have positive thoughts and simply receive what we ask of the universe. Wouldn't that be nice.

1 out of 5 stars Do-it-yourself: Step by Step guide to grow money on trees.......2007-10-18

I'm appalled at how many people rate this author credible. She is, on the contrary, a detriment to her readers, revolting megalomaniac and dangerous to society, particularly the ever-malleable youth to say the least.

For those rave reviewers that "can not find the words" to describe The Secret, here's a few to get you started: ad nauseam, trite, drivel, pseudo-science, b.s., delusion, wishful thinking, lazy, oversimplified, feeble-minded, occult magic, hogwash, shallow, materialism, greed, arrogant, boor, psychobabble, and pure bunk.

What's next Ms. Byrne, you and your cronies fabricate stellar reviews? Most of them in my opinion are suspect and in no way elaborate to the books effectiveness. Moreover, you owe my good friend an explanation (and an apology for deceiving her) as to why her positive thinking hasn't manifested into bringing her husband home from Iraq. Maybe her thoughts are why we are at war in the first place? A lobotomy is a prerequisite for your book.

More harm than good. If you buy into this, the earth is flat.

3 out of 5 stars Worth the read.......2007-10-18

I like to read self help books like Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill,Norman Vincent Peale,etc.. The Secret, the book is inspiring yet I felt there were some conflicting ideas in different chapters. I would have also liked to see the references sited. There are some big statements made about events happening. I would like to know where they got each instance of historical info. or state it is speculation or theory. I also enjoyed the DVD which the book refers to several times. There as well, a bibliography would help.

Book Description

In this startling new book, New York Times bestselling author Robert Spencer, provides a warts-and-all portrait of the Prophet of Islam and draws out what his life implies for reforming Islam and repulsing Islamic terrorists. Spencer relies solely on primary sources considered reliable by Muslims and evaluates modern biographies to show how Muhammad has been changed for Western audiences, lulling them into consoling but false conclusions.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-10-19

Although I found this book informative, I would not use this book as the sole source of information about Muhammad.

1 out of 5 stars More fodder for the Hate Fire.......2007-10-19

I was interested in this book due to its posted claims and in order to learn more about the author's views about Islam. I myself am an American born Muslim scholar who has actually studied in Muslim circles although I have been raised entirely in the US and currently work in the medical field alongside my religious studies and duties.

As a scholar approaching this book, I discovered numerous errors - in fact they were so many that I could have written another book from the errors of the first 80 pages alone. Beyond the errors though I was far more concerned by something else that Mr. Spencer and his devoted fan-base clearly display - hate. I am a practicing Muslim which to many of Mr. Spencer's readers equates to being a terrorist, yet as a medical professional I instead spend my working days helping injured and sick Americans from all walks of life. This drive within me has been greatly nurtured by the Prophet Muhammad's teachings. In my Muslim community, as well as dozens of others that I have been privileged to visit around the US, I see Muslims working hard to be patient with much of the prejudice and hate directed their way by ignorant people who want to hold every Muslim responsible for 9/11.

It doesn't matter to them that Muslim scholars have gone online, on the radio and even on tv to disown Bin Laden and his errant ideas; it doesn't matter that in 9/11 and every incident of "Muslim" terrorism since even before that time that many Muslims were in fact part of the casualties as well; it doesn't matter that in recent surveys over 70% of Muslim-Americans report that they have experienced at least one incident of prejudice or hate as a direct result of their religious practices. So, the only thing I can see coming from works by alleged scholars such as Robert Spencer is an increase in hate, misinformation and confusion. You make the problem worse instead of contributing to any sort of a solution.

So for anyone who may read this who is sincerely interested in learning what Islam is really about and what the Prophet Muhammad really taught, I would suggest maybe learning about Islam from someone who actually practices it, someone who has actually studied it with Islamic scholars who can clarify some of the misconceptions and questions that may arise from reading through the Islamic scriptures. Some of the best authors in this regard are Dr. Ali Shehata Demystifying Islam: Your Guide to the Most Misunderstood Religion of the 21st Century, Yahiya Emerick The Life and Work of Muhammad (Critical Lives) and Charles Le Gai Eaton Islam and the Destiny of Man (Suny Series, Islam) among others.

One of the best ways to learn more about Islam and Muslims is to check with a Mosque in your area which will also give you the opportunity to actually meet Muslims - it may be that then you will see that the overwhleming majority of us Muslims are just as American, just as human and just as concerned about the threat of radical extremism in our religion as you are - and maybe then we can start building bridges of understanding, cooperation and mutual respect that can help us to actually put an end to the terrorist threat and allow everyone to get on with their lives in peace.

3 out of 5 stars Oh political bias..........2007-10-04

While it is certainly true that Spencer utilizes recognized primary sources to construct his arguments, he fails entirely to place the sources in context, or interpret them in a manner consistent with the vast majority of Muslims. I find it heavily amusing that he believes so strongly in Islam's intolerance that he includes it in his title. The reason for this amusement is that up until modern times (Ottoman Empire forward), Islam was arguably the most tolerant of the three religions of the book. In addition to this, Islam is the only one of the three which allows for Muslims, Christians, and Jews to be judged equally (Al-Baqarah 112). When compared to Christianity's views on salvation, and its history of Conversion by the sword (1st-5th crusades, Spanish Inquisition), Islam looks quite tolerant.

take Spencer with a grain of salt. His citations of the hadiths, Qur'an, and other primary sources may be correct, but his conclusions are massively off. You would be better off reading the Qur'an yourself and making your own decisions, as it is fairly obvious that Spencer is merely playing off of America's current ignorance of Islam to paint a picture consistent with our stereotypes.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Eye Opening Book!.......2007-10-03

This is a very eye opening book about the founder of one of the world's most dominant religions. The author uses Muslim references to obtain his facts. He also quotes Muslim scholars and what they have to say. It is not a long book, but it is packed with very informative and very eye opening information about Muhammad and his followers. This book will help people understand the ideas and motivation behind why so many Muslims in the Middle East and elsewhere can be dangerous. This is not a book on Muslims today, as a rule, but does greatly help one understand why many radical Muslims act as they do. It is an easy read and very informative. He explains why the Jewish people are looked down upon along with the Christians, and goes into why the various areas like Medina and Mecca are so important to Islam. I think this is a very good book for anyone wanting to greater understand the reasoning behind Islam, and the man that founded it.

5 out of 5 stars Wht Everyone Needs to Know.......2007-10-01

This is a detailed exploration of the meaning of the Qur'an, and the sayings of Muhammad. Spencer informs the reader that the Qur'an is not set down in chronological order. Rather, it is arranged from longest verse to shortest verse.

As the word of God, the Qur'an can never be amended by man, but verses can be abrogated by God. God can change His mind, and make earlier verses void. However, those same voided verses must remain in the Qur'an, as God did not direct that the voided verses should be removed.

Spencer guides the reader through this confusion, by explaining which verses are still in effect. The reader needs to obtain one of the translations of the Qur'an, referenced by Spencer, inorder to be able to to lookup the Qu'ranic verses to which he refers.

The peaceful verses of the Qur'an, with regard to the treatment of nonbelievers, date from the Meccan period, when Islam was struggling to get established. Those verses of the Qur'an, added after Muhammad fled to Medina, exhort the believers to make war upon the nonbelievers, and to spread the religion by force.

Those who mantain that Islam is a religion of peace, are referenceing verses which have been abrogated, or voided, and are no longer in effect.

A must read for anyone seeking to understand Islam.

An Inconvenient Truth: The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incedibly Riveting, Powerful Warning!.......2007-10-15

I came here to write a review and was surprised to see some of the negative comments, especially those written in the style of an elementary school student. Al Gore has written an incredibly revealing look into what lies before us if we leave things the the way they are and ignore the majority of reputable scientists who have the same predictions that Gore espouses. Any idiot can see that the pace of damage that we are experiencing now in the environment cannot be equated to any other time in history. The pictures in Gore's book are not fake. He is not the only one who discusses the issue of future loss of land due to the rising waters. The biggest problem for him is that being involved in politics unfortunately invites those who are on the other side of the aisle to criticize him, even when they know he's right. It's an infantile attitude - one that may very well be responsible for the ultimate destruction of our world as we know it. Next, they will be attacking the Nobel Prize Committee for giving their award to Gore. He well deserves it for his hard work and worthy work. Shame on those who find the need to put their childishly damning comments on here. It reveals so much more about them than it does about Gore.

1 out of 5 stars All fluff, no content.......2007-10-14

There is a great deal of fluff and hysteria, accompanied by lots of heatstring-jerking pictures, in this book. Unfortunately, there is no useful/factual content: the only relevant graph amounts to a prime example for the book "How To Lie With Statistics".

Essential facts which Gore ignores and which destroys his case: (1) the long-term change feared is just one degree per _century_, (2) carbon dioxide is plant food, and (3) climate changes - cope.

1 out of 5 stars SO..... what caused the Mini-ice-age of 1250-1850?.......2007-10-14

Between the years 1250-1850, the earth experienced a Mini Ice Age that froze-over rivers, destroyed England's wine industry, and nearly starved Europe (until they discovered how to use potatoes for nourishment). Al Gore admits in this book, "I don't know."

And that's the fundamental problem.

How can scientists claim, "We can predict future weather", when they don't even know how to explain the past weather events? They know there was a Mini Ice Age, they know the effects it had on humanity, but they don't know WHY it happened. The scientists don't know.

Until scientists learn to explain past Climate Changes,
they shouldn't be making guesses about the future.

1 out of 5 stars One more example of religious fundamentalism and its not Christian or Muslim.......2007-10-14

Wind farms covering the great plains, how many birds do you want to kill, oh come on already! More corn farming driving up food prices. Solar cells that produce more toxic waste in manufacture than the petroleum products they deplore. And the only solution, nuclear power, buried in the fine print. Truly these people are loony , there are conspiracies everywhere, and I have to buy a rowboat now so I can get to Wall Street in few years. Please, 500 years ago the Thames was frozen over. Get a grip, give Al a pill, and remainder this nonsense.

1 out of 5 stars An Incoherent Crock.......2007-10-13

What is important to remember above all else is that Al Gore is a politician and a journalist. He is decidedly NOT a scientist. In short, he is not even remotely qualified to be discussing the science behind global warming. Well, I suppose he's qualified to give a lecture to the average 3rd grade class, but that's about it.

So how do we explain the fact that so many gushing, starry-eyed brethren embrace Gore as some kind of prophet of global warming? More than anything, I suspect it is a reflection of just how incredibly ignorant and naive the American people are. Remember, a British court has ruled that his book is riddled with factual errors (and it is likely worse than the court's ruling). It is a real life manifestation of P.T. Barnum's famous dictum that "A sucker is born every minute."

Our society needs to stop equating fame with expertise. Gore is a famous politician, and his true expertise is as a con man. The scientific arena is the last place he either understands or belongs.

I suspect that in 25 years time the expression "the sky is falling" will pass out of vogue, to be replaced by "that's an inconvenient truth."

I wish I could have rated this piece of scat zero stars.

Book Description

The best organizations have the best talent. . . Financial incentives drive company performance. . . Firms must change or die.

Popular axioms like these drive business decisions every day. Yet too much common management “wisdom” isn’t wise at all—but, instead, flawed knowledge based on “best practices” that are actually poor, incomplete, or outright obsolete. Worse, legions of managers use this dubious knowledge to make decisions that are hazardous to organizational health.

This practical and candid book challenges leaders to commit to evidence-based management as a way of organizational life – and shows how to finally turn this common sense into common practice.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No 'one size fits all' solutions here.......2007-08-21

In this well written book, Stanford Professors Pfeffer and Sutton demonstrate the dangers of copying others, blindly applying conventional wisdom, or accepting ideologically based fables without understanding how the underlying human behavioral principles and fundamentals apply to the situation at hand. It asks us to look at the underlying assumptions about how people think and operate - are people really motivated only by the stick or the carrot? Is the relational model for the `rest of life' really different than the relational model for our `work life'? If neither assumption is a fundamental truth, should we be using policies and practices that make these assumptions?

It encourages leaders and organizations to constantly `be in learning' rather than looking for `the answer' in a best practice book or seminar. Simply put, `copy & paste' of someone else's answer is seldom, if ever, your answer on a performance improvement test. If you are thinking that evidence-based management means, "show me who is using this practice", or "show me where this policy is working"; read the entire book. What at first sounds like a declaration that only statistically proven, historical practices should be accepted as the basis for future practices is in itself a dangerous half-truth that will limit the future to a repeat of the past. Hard Facts is recommended for leaders who will read the book in its entirety. Dennis DeWilde, author of "The Performance Connection"

4 out of 5 stars A balanced, practical look at management "beliefs"..........2007-07-12

Pfeffer and Sutton take a hard look at a few management beliefs that have seemed universally accepted in one form or another. Of the ones presented, I have heard and read the most about 1) best organizations have the best people, 2) strategy is destiny, and 3) change or die. The authors have done a very good job at showing that some beliefs are not always true under all circumstances and, in fact, quite often false or at least "half-truths". I also found the financial incentives chapter particularly compelling as it seems that a more balanced reward system is better for most companies in the long run.

I found most of the advice for handling these beliefs to be very sound although a recurring theme is just take a step back, look at hard evidence, and not necessarily follow "the crowd". This book would be best appreciated and most easily "implemented" by executive management but is also a very interesting read for anyone who wants to build out their general management knowledge. Overall, a pretty insightful and practical read.

4 out of 5 stars Finally ... A Management Book Worth Reading.......2007-07-09

The problem with the puffed up, presumptuous world of management literature and reasearch is that it is neither. Most books are an appalling mixture of presumed truths, mishmashed ideas set up, many times as a "science." In fact it Management is much more a dismal art than Economics ever was a dismal science.

But now enter the duo who wrote this book... the true essence of the book could be:

1) lesson of wisdom... wisdom in the Platonic sense -- knowing what you do not know and being smart enought to admit when you do not know and brave enought to continue on using;

2) evidence-based management. This means empirical management, hard facts, not preconcieved notions of how the world is or should work.

Evidence-based management is based upon a scientific approach and this book take evidence-based medicine as its template for how to arrange business. In evidence-based management there is no immutable truth -- science and the socratic method of inquiry mean that the playing field is level. Poeple are able to challenge preconceived ideas, but they must also be willing to submit their ideas to the scrutiny of analyse. Pfeffer et al, give good examples of preconcieved ideas that are either not true or half-baked. Incentive pay is one -- it works in simple, non-dependent environments where individuals control results. It does NOT work in highly structured environments where results depend upon complex interactions with others... ie. Cold-callers should be incentivised by pay-for-performance, but doctors and teachers clearly should not -- and all the imperical evidence supports the above assertion.

So why do people have such a knee-jerk reaction and assume that everyone only needs to be incentivised to spur them ever onwards to better results...? Pfeffer et al, suggest that it is popular culture and sort of presumed ideological supposition that is never challenged.

Other ideas challenged in this book by Evidence-based Management tecniques are:

STRATEGY: Its nowhere near as important as knowing what to do. In fact concentrating only on strategy is most often wrong. What is much more necessary is having a process to implement changes little by little.

LEADERS: Not as important as billed. Change at the top has almost no correlation with corporate performance. Leadership does matter to a degree, but not as much as good systems of work. Here again is the banal overwhelmed by the sexy presumption that someone who is in power of a company must "actually control results" -- as Pfeffer et al show... they clearly do not. Good process, good middle line managers who implement well and who know and listen to process management determine which companies will succeed more than good leaders.

This book was one of the few management tomes that I actually looked forward to reading when I picked it up. I have already ordered "The Knowing-Doing Gap." A very refreshing change and real wisdom for a wretched genre.

5 out of 5 stars Find your company in this book and squirm.......2007-06-19

This excellent book lays out why and how companies fail to drive their business based on evidence, and instead "miracle cure" advice and personal reactions - largely to the detriment of everyone involved. The book quickly lays out why you should take an evidence-based approach and some guidelines on how. The meat of the book comes in chapters on various half-truths that are dangerous in terms of managing people and organizations:

- Is work fundamentally different from the rest of life and should it be
- Do the best organizations have the best people
- Do financial incentives drive company performance
- Is strategy destiny?
- Is it change or die
- Are great leaders in control of their companies (and should the be)?

They wrap up with a call for evidence-based management. The book is well-written, funny in many places and slightly depressing (if you don't see yourself or your company in any of the "how not to" stories I will be astonished) but very worthwhile. Some of my favorite quotes include:
"If doctor's practiced medicine the way many companies practice management, there would be far more sick and dead patients, and many more doctor's would be in jail"
"If you think you have a new idea, you are wrong. Someone problably already had it. This idea isn't original either; I stole it from someone else
Sutton's Law"
"Treat your business as an unfinished prototype"
"No brag, just facts"

In particular they recommend making sure you have identifed cause and effect when considering past successes, taking account of changing circumstances and establishing why something was effective before adopting it. They emphasize the importance of attacking assumptions and establishing which are pre-conditions for success. The book lays out plenty of evidence on the importance of narrow testing of new ideas before rolling them out, especially in ways analogous to the double-blind study used in medicine. They discuss the importance not of individual leaders being great but of them building a structure within which people can be successful (think Toyota) and they conclude by reminding us that wisdom is knowing what you know and what you don't know while still acting on the best available data and being willing to change as new data becomes available.

I would also recommend three other books I have reviewed recently:
Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning
Tom Davenport's book shows one aspect of evidence-based management - driving company behavior with analytics - and uses some of the same examples (Harrah's, for one)
Making Robust Decisions: Decision Management For Technical, Business, & Service Teams
David Ullman's book is a great discussion of decision-making in the face of uncertainty, a key skill in evidence-based management
The Halo Effect: ... and the Eight Other Business Delusions That Deceive Managers
Phil Rosenzweig's book disses many of the same business trend half-truths with even more wit than this one. If you are cynical about fix-everything-with-technique-X books, and you probably should be, this is a great book

Lastly if you are more technically minded and enjoy this book, you might enjoy the one I have just finished:Smart Enough Systems: How to Deliver Competitive Advantage by Automating Hidden Decisions

4 out of 5 stars Hard to Believe.......2007-06-04

Pfeffer & Sutton's book is all about how bias and incorrect "common sense" can lead us astray in making management decisions. They show how a great deal of what passes as business management advice is just not all that good. In fact, some of it is, as the title says, total nonsense.
That said, it was far less of a book than I wanted it to be. The title, you see, has this really bold lettering for HARD FACTS. In smaller type underneath is the rest of the title. In fact, on my copy the Total Nonsense is in bigger type than the Half-Truths part (the latter even being gray on a black background). Yet, as I read the book, I kept looking for the HARD FACTS and found a lot of references to Half-Truths. The basic premise seems to be that while most advice is correct in some settings, it is only when it is taken as truth for all time that it becomes dangerous.
I wanted graph after graph of facts from all the studies people mention but never put into digestible form. I wanted to get the translation of management studies into facts that I can use. However, what I did get was basic management book stylistic convention: assertion of some truth followed by an example from one of seven (plus or minus two) case studies. Not that this is all bad, far from it. But it seemed sad given the large HARD FACTS on the top. In fact, I find the convention easy reading. But it doesn't really give me the HARD FACTS. I guess I would have to go into the footnotes (ugh), read all the studies mentioned (ugh, ugh), and then draw the graphs, charts, and summaries (ugh, ugh, ugh). That is what I thought this book would do and doesn't.
So I think it becomes another interesting book that will be put aside for another interesting book in about five months. Are there good insights? Sure. Do I trust all their sources? I don't know why I should since they never explain why they do (the "lots of studies" logic). So maybe they are right, but it is hard to believe.

2 out of 5 stars Title is misleading.......2007-09-12

I think the title is a misleading. It says God Without Religion. Based on the title I assumed it would talk about a god and how man made religions are flawed. The book did indeed cover the flaws of religion although perhaps too briefly. I'm sure a giant book could be written on the subject but this book just touches on it lightly. I also assumed the book would cover the topic of some kind of supreme being which would be proved by a mathematical or scientific method. After all the term "God Without" implies there is a god. Instead what it goes on to say is there is no God and everyone should worship themselves to fill the void of being godless. The Title should really say something like "There is No God and Religion is Stupid". Perhaps I just wasn't ready to stand on my head or do breathing exercises but I found the second half of the book unexpected and a little boring.

3 out of 5 stars Questioning God: Healthy activity.......2007-05-14

While I can think of 3 or 4 books of a similar nature that I like more (Sam Harris' End of Faith and Letter To A Christian Nation, first of all), this is another important book that stands up to the current trend of forcing "religion" as if it were more important than moral values. This book slaps silly the idea that we benefit from (any form of) extremes when it comes to a person's spiritual life. It didn't read as enjoyably as Religion Gone Bad (Mel White, another ***** book from this year) nor as educational as Richard Dawkins, but belongs in all intelligent and questioning homes and libraries where the first amendment also gives us freedom FROM religion!

5 out of 5 stars A Different Way to See Things.......2007-03-21

If you are searching for the meaning of it all, this is a book you should read. It contains wonderful insights. Whether you prescribe to the author's views or not, it is a worthy addition to a spiritual library.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Religious and Non-religious.......2007-03-20

Sankara Saranam lived as an ascetic for two decades during which time he engaged in techniques for sense-introversion. His daily practice over those years led to an understanding of how the ego manifests in our mind. He shares insights based on these personal experiences in "God without Religion" to help readers learn from his spiritual journey.

Saranam wants to free the individual from the divisions created by religions of us and them thinking, believer and non-believer, saved and condemned - all divisions which create disharmony between different faiths and sometimes even engender violence. "God Without Religion" presents the idea of a universal God, which as a concept is found in writings of past philosophers and mystics.

This book engages in a debate that is essential for people to remove their prejudices based on religious dogma and intolerant beliefs. Sankara encourages a more universal perspective that transcends the parochial boundaries of many faiths.

His criticism of the shortcomings often found in religious beliefs are important to consider. For example, Saranam mentions that religions encourage the believer to look outside for spiritual salvation i.e. acceptance of rituals, sacraments etc. instead of encouraging an inner quest, which is why religions often discourage absolutely free inquiry because they make a priori suppositions.

"God Without Religion" allows readers to discover and define God from their own awareness rather than ideas of God based on accepted religious doctrine. The book doesn't provide answers about God, it encourages readers to explore their vision of God through series of questions intended to allow for self-transcendence to a universal understanding. The attitude expressed in the book is one of wonder and exploration.

The book requires an open mind in order to explore the ideas discussed by the author. The author's criticism of religious belief is valid, though ultimately it is NOT antagonistic to religion as it initially appears, since all religions are at their core are based on mystical experience, the rituals and dogmas are their outer form.

I fully recommend this book along with "Nexus: A Neo Novel," which presents a compelling psychological and spiritual journey of transformation.

5 out of 5 stars This is a 6 Star Book! Godly!.......2007-03-19

I just ordered two hundred copies of this book to give as gifts to friends and family, because I can't imagine a better gift than the knowledge and genuine human heart in GOD WITHOUT RELIGION. I have never recognized a freedom from outmoded centralized institutions and sense of power as I do now, from considering the questions and challenges in this book. If God is the potential to expand our hearts and minds, this is not only a book on issues of God and religion, but a godly book. It is unique, because it's as if it was written from the inside. By that I mean it will raise different questions for every reader. It will raise just the right questions to expand your sense of self, sense of the cosmos, and sense of what is God.

In this new 328-page book, author Bruce D. Clayton, Ph.D., uses rare sketches, footnoted historical research, archival lithographs, period photographs and contemporary technique demonstrations to reveal shotokan's deadly intent and propose modern practical applications of such knowledge. 1 out of 5 stars Poorly researchered amateur effort.......2007-08-10

This author of this book admittedly rented or bought a number of videos on Okinawa karate, supposedly watched the videos and then wrote a book based on his limited experience in Shotokan ryu, a Japanese off-shoot of the original Okinawan arts. The author make some fairly outrageous claims that he attempts to pass off as historically correct without one shred of primary research or evidence. It is outrageous that a publishing house would even bother putting this diatribe in print.

Readers interested in Shotokan should immerse themselves in Harry Cook's book, The History of Shotokan. For more information on what Shotokan is missing as a martial art, I highly suggest the Gennosuke Higaki book: Hidden Karate, the true bunkai for the Heian Katas and Naihanchi.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the roots & history Shotokan Karate & More!.......2007-07-22

The Best Book on the Origins & History Shotokan Karate & More!

A radical book yes, but it's not controversial OR contradictory at all IMHO. Easy to read & packed full of information about the true origins & history of Shotokan & budo, not just the normal couple of paragraphs that you get in most books on the subject.
I agree wholeheartedly with all the other "POSITIVE" reviews written here below, as for the negative one about "serious injury", the only serious injury to anyone following the many applications (bunkai) described in here would be to the opponent - and you don't have to change the moves in the kata to fit the bunkai (Oyo Bunkai). See Injury-free Karate by Paul Perry.

If you're a serious student of Shotokan Karate (or any of its derivatives or styles) then you ought to read this one FIRST, it'll save you a lot of money. It really is a breath of fresh air compared to the myriad of humdrum copycat books on karate.

If you're looking for a broader & deeper history of karate (& Martial Arts) in general then also look at "Okinawan Karate" by Mark Bishop.

5 out of 5 stars Shotokan Secrets.......2007-04-02

Probably the best book I've read as far as the true history of not only of the Shotokan style but karate itself. Very detail in the history and the applications of the Shotokan style. I highly recomend this book to karate practioners.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2007-04-02

A good insight with some interesting ideas on how this great art came about. It goes hand in hand with what I have been teaching for years, when others come up with siliar concepts it validates what you have been doing all your life.

1 out of 5 stars A Complete Farce!.......2007-03-19

Having trained on Okinawa several times throughout the last thirty years I am confident that this book was written without a single visit to the island. Grossly inaccurate, racist, and recklessly missing easily researched information, I can't believe anyone with any experience on the island would find value in this book. The failure to even mention the martial art of the royal family (Udun ti- palace hand) is mind blowing since the royal art is strictly a soft art and this book is trying to justify the development of hard styles. All the author would have to do is walk into a Undun ti dojo and he would have been given all the documentation he needed. Of course, he wouldn't have been able to write this book after that since his theories would have been blown out the window.
This is a fairy tale, new "legends" that some will cling to and pass off as history.

Book Description

A shocking murder shatters the picturesque calm of Pennsylvania's Amish country -- and tests the heart and soul of the lawyer who steps in to defend the young woman at the center of the storm....

Plain Truth

The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: circumstantial evidence suggests that eighteen-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide -- and, for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own. Delving deep inside the world of those who live "plain," Ellie must find a way to reach Katie on her terms. And as she unravels a tangled murder case, Ellie also looks deep within -- to confront her own fears and desires when a man from her past reenters her life.

Moving seamlessly from psychological drama to courtroom suspense, Plain Truth is a fascinating portrait of Amish life -- and a moving exploration of the bonds of love, friendship, and the heart's most complex choices.

Download Description

Moving seamlessly from psychological drama to courtroom suspense, Plain Truth is a triumph of contemporary storytelling. Jodi Picoult presents a fascinating portrait of Amish life rarely witnessed by those outside the faith -- and discovers a place where circumstances are not always what they seem, where love meets lies, and where relationships grow so strong they can transcend death.

When Ellie Hathaway decides to defend Katie Fisher against the charge of murder, the urban-savvy D.A. finds herself caught in a clash of cultures with a people whose channels of justice are markedly different from her own. Plain Truth is the extraordinary story of two unforgettable women -- and what happens when their disparate worlds collide.

I read a lot of Jodi Picoult. If you are a Picoult fan, you know that sometimes you need to read another author in between and then go back to Jodi. I have read most of her books and this is clearly one of her best! I loved it. It is right up there with Sister's Keeper!

I loved this book. I'm not someone who sits down and reads books. However, this one kept my attention and was phenominal! I plan to read all of Jodi Piccoult's books. I definately recommend this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing right until the end.......2007-10-02

I thought this book was outstanding. Being from Pennsylvania, I found it very interesting to dive more into the "Plain" way of life. I enjoyed the story itself and the focus on the Amish Culture. It was a page turner, without a doubt. I wasn't able to put it down after the first page. Definately would reccomend this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Plain Truth is Difficult to Come By.......2007-10-02

This story opens with the discovery of the body of a newborn baby on an Amish farm. The rest of the book deals with the struggle for the truth.

Although it had been proven that young Kate had just given birth, she denied ever having been pregnant, let alone having ever given birth. Little by little, she admits to remembering more and more circumstances linking her as the mother of the baby.

Meanwhile, defense attorney, Ellie Hathaway, learns truths about herself. Forced to stay on the Amish farm in order to maintain custody of her client, she is compelled to face a totally different lifestyle and a set of values that is much different than her own.

Interesting characters and a fascinating glimpse into the Amish way of life, make this book irresistible. The ending has a unique and unexpected twist which readers are sure to love. This novel obliges the reader to contemplate the meaning and value of truth.

Another great book by Jodi Picoult. I love reading about the Amish culture and the court case had me on the edge of my seat. Great characterisations throughout. Definitely worth reading!!

Book Description

Truth in Translation is a critical study of Biblical translation, assessing the accuracy of nine English versions of the New Testament in wide use today. By looking at passages where theological investment is at a premium, the author demonstrates that many versions deviate from accurate translation under the pressure of theological bias.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "What Is Truth?"__Jesus Christ.......2007-09-02

Truth defined is: 'True or actual state of a matter'. David BeDuhn displayed this quality in his book. I am an Jehovah's Witness and appreciated his objectivity in producing this book. When you look on the Internet, you can find any number of 'hack jobs' against the NWT i.e. 'Bad translation', 'Poor translation', 'Produced by individuals that were lacking skills as Greek translators'. It seems that the translators of the NWT were wise in remaining anonymous, in that the translation would stand on it's own virtue, not the translators. David BeDuhn, not a Jehovah's Witness, did not have an ax to grind, he just set out on a quest to find the Truth. If you are interested in learning about Bible translation, this is MUST reading. If you have a closed mind, you might as well save your 'dime' and time and don't bother reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting book.......2007-09-01

A worldly saying is: "The simplest explanation is usually the correct one". This book is no exception - very logical and well laid out material can be read very fast and with very high retention. I read this book in four days and remembered much. An excellent book to help a serious Bible student to have an basis for his OWN translation beliefs, not just the beliefs of others. The right book at the right time for me. I would like to write as well with such persuasive logic as Mr. BeDuhn.

5 out of 5 stars Truth in Translation.......2007-08-21

What a remarkably clear, concise and authoritative work! There can be no doubt Prof.BeDuhn is savvy to all the nuances and peculiaritites of Koine Greek. As a Bible student for over forty years I can say he has written the defining explanation for John 1:1, and has cleared up the flood of contradicting interpretations. Anyone, with an open mind and humble heart can now see that God (ho theos)and Jesus (theos)were not considered "as one" in this particular verse, as has been taught from many pulpits.

Pro. BeDuhn's even-handedness in criticising all versions compared is refreshing. It appears he has shown no favor to one or the other. Though I took exception to one conclusion he drew; as to his approval of the re-insertion of God's name in only seventy-eight occasions of the New World translation. Since many versions (KJV in particular) have moved to expunge the name (Yahweh or Jehovah)entirely, it is my belief that over-correcting, assuming the translators of the NW translation are wrong, would be far better than denying the name existed at all. Of course, marking the insertion in the footnotes as he suggested would be acceptable. This is a minor point as far as the work goes but it is a start in restoring God's name to prominence in the Greek Scriptures as it was in the Hebrew scriptures (nearly 7,000 times).

5 out of 5 stars Honest look at Bibles.......2007-07-30

This book does look at many translations without bias. I found the evidence overwhelming in most of the points brought out. Especially if you take the time to check it for yourself. Using concordances and other bible reference material. I would like to see something similiar on the Hebrew Scriptures. Conclusion an honest look at why some translations are biased and not based on original manuscripts.

5 out of 5 stars Beholden to none but the truth.......2007-06-28

BeDuhn does not dance around theology, either popular or unique. Instead he drives the nails deep into the wood of Scripture, and on point after point he arrives at a beautiful bottom line: What does the Greek text really contain? How should it best be translated, and why? Where is the line between translation and interpretation?

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing ovreall with sparks of quality here and there.......2007-09-20

I am about ready to give up on this series, but I think I can make it one more book. This one was again disappointing. It rambled on and on over the exact same tired ground covered in other books. Then there would be a bit of action that was interesting and might have a good twist. Then it would ramble some more. I skipped whole paragraphs and pages and missed none of the plot. If you have stuck it out this long with the series, sure, so ahead. Otherwise don't bother.

3 out of 5 stars Merely average.......2007-09-15

Phantom by Terry Godkind is the second book in the Chainfire trilogy, but also the tenth book in the Sword of Truth saga. For people not familiar with Mr. Goodkind, it may sound odd that a book is part of a trilogy and a saga at the same time, but that is the case with this book. The Chainfire trilogy is merely the final three books in the saga. By all accounts, the final book in the Chainfire trilogy, will in fact be the last book in the Sword of Truth saga. The saga that was started back in 1994 with Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, Book 1) is due to close with the next book. There have been a mix of gems and duds among the books, but over all it's proven to be a solid series.

The overall plot of this book is almost identical to the plot of the previous book, Chainfire: Chainfire Trilogy, Part 1 (Sword of Truth, Book 9). In that Richard is still searching for Kahlan. The only difference is that in Chainfire, Richard had convinced those closest to him (Zed, Cara, Nicci etc) that Kahlan does exists. Sadly, nothing much changes in terms of that plot line. It almost seems as though Mr. Goodkind wants to milk that piece of plot for all it's worth. There are a few other subplots sprinkled in for good measure as well. Such as the Boxes of Orden and just what they can do. I particularly like this subplot because it ties up events from book one and is obviously bringing things together. There is also, as with previous books, a great deal of discussion of prophecy. This subplot seems to make the book become sluggish and redundant due to the fact the characters seem as though they are constantly repeating themselves. There is also the additional subplot of the First Grand Wizard, Baraccus, and the events he started way back when. Certainly, an interesting addition to the story.

The characters are largely the same characters that were present in the previous book, and the entire saga. There is not much character development at all for the main heroes. In fact, the character that seems to develop the most is Emperor Jagang. Jagang's development mostly centers on readers just leaning more about him. There is no real growth for the characters. At times, this novel felt as though the characters were secondary and they were being dragged along by the story. This is the second book in a row where Mr. Goodkind has offered very little in the way of character development. I was disappointed, especially being that this is the second to last book in the entire series to have flat characters, after readers have invested so much time following the story. I sincerely hope, with the last book, Mr. Goodkind adds a great deal of character development.

I have a few criticisms about this novel.

One being that at times the dialog drags on, and on... and on. The characters say the same thing over and over again. It is almost as though Mr. Goodkind is saying to the reader "I want you to get this point." And then proceeds to beat the reader over the head with the point.

Secondly, there are several times in this novel where the characters are struggling when suddenly one of the characters has an `ah ha!' moment and suddenly figures out a very vexing problem and has all the answers. This is very frustrating as a reader to see things `given' to the characters so easily. This happens no less than three times in this story.

Also, as I talked about above, the simple lack of character development. Sure, the story as a whole is advanced, but in terms of character development there is very little to be found.

Overall this is a slightly disappointing book. As a reader, I don't feel like a whole lot was accomplished in the broad scope of things. Fans of the series will certainly need to read this book, after all there is only one more left to complete the tale. People considering reading this novel, without prior knowledge of the series, need to really go back and start from the beginning. There are events and characters in this book that are discussed, or mentioned that would make no sense without reading the previous books. I would most likely recommend this series as a whole to more adult fantasy readers, yet in the same breath I think there are better fantasy series out there right now with less philosophical discussion based on the author's views and beliefs. This is simply an average fantasy book at best.

5 out of 5 stars Phantom.......2007-09-08

As always Terry Goodkind keeps writing the books that you can not put down. The Phantom is deep into the series of Wizards first rule books (book 10) and it seems sometimes the "catching up" is a little tiresome but I just skip over these parts and truley love all the books that I have read by Terry Goodkind.

2 out of 5 stars The continuation.......2007-09-01

TG in his SFT series has always felt the need to repeat himself hundreds of times so that a full third of the book rehashes the series up to the current point. However up till now the story had continued to advance enough that by the end of whatever book I had read it seemed worth reading. Phantom was a complete disappointment in that it did not. As slow paced as his books are I somehow doubt he'll be able to masterfully end what still stands in my mind as a good series in one final novel. Those who have the time I still would recommend the series, this book one just has to suffer through and in all honesty may not even be that bad if the reader can quickly move to the next one due in Nov 07'.

Book Description

For ages women have come together over coffee, cocktails, or late-night phone chats to analyze the puzzling behavior of men.

He's afraid to get hurt again.

Maybe he doesn't want to ruin the friendship.

Maybe he's intimidated by me.

He just got out of a relationship.

Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo are here to say that -- despite good intentions -- you're wasting your time. Men are not complicated, although they'd like you to think they are. And there are no mixed messages.

The truth may be He's just not that into you.

Unfortunately, guys are too terrified to ever directly tell a woman "You're not the one." But their actions absolutely show how they feel.

HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU -- based on a popular episode of Sex and the City -- educates otherwise smart women on how to tell when a guy just doesn't like them enough, so they can stop wasting time making excuses for a dead-end relationship.

Reexamining familiar scenarios and classic mind-sets that keep us in unsatisfying relationships, Behrendt and Tuccillo's wise and wry understanding of the sexes spares women hours of waiting by the phone, obsessing over the details with sympathetic girlfriends, and hoping his mixed messages really mean "I'm in love with you and want to be with you."

HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU is provocative, hilarious, and, above all, intoxicatingly liberating. It deserves a place on every woman's night table. It knows you're a beautiful, smart, funny woman who deserves better. The next time you feel the need to start "figuring him out," consider the glorious thought that maybe He's just not that into you. And then set yourself loose to go find the one who is.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-10-11

This book really makes you think about what you've done in relationships. I saw myself in many of the stories! It is just SO true. I'm on my second read to get it set in! I recommend this to anyone just out of a relationship or having doubts about anything.

4 out of 5 stars I should have written this book!.......2007-10-07

Many years ago the term was "GU (geographically undesireable)". I always said that if you lived 500 miles away and a man was into you, he'd make the trip and if you lived next door and he wasn't into you, it'd be too far to go. I never bought or read this book as I thought the male author was just pompous and sarcastic about women. But, read it in a waiting room and got to laugh out loud and enjoyed the style and bluntness of the responses (even if the letters were made up). I have always wondered why women can be intelligent, attractive, interesting and interested but, when a man walks into her life (or into the room or into view of her), she becomes willing to settle for whatever crumbs he throws her way. Even in a work environment, women support men over women! Wake up ladies, they don't give up their friends or lives for us. Why do we feel we must? (No, not ALL of us, but damn near all!).

5 out of 5 stars Ladies, heed Greg & Liz's advice!.......2007-09-29

This audio book is pure genious! It's straight-shooting, blunt, and full of "tough love" which hopefully will knock some sense into those of us who hang on to guys way too long hoping things will "get better". It's an easy listen, because you know it speaks to you. You will truly feel that Greg & Liz are your caring friends or siblings when you listen to their advice. I only wish Greg's live comedy show incorporated some of the material in the book, rather than the endless vulgarity he seems to think is necessary to be funny in a live performance. Stick to writing books, Greg! That's where your true talent is...

5 out of 5 stars Ouch! But True!.......2007-09-19

What I like most about this book is that it doesn't allow any wiggle room for excuses. (My excuses *love* wiggle room.) The truth isn't always fuzzy but it certainly sets me free.

It's freeing for me to know that I'm strong enough to deal with the truth. Because life goes on - fabulously well - whether or not he calls. I think this book makes women stronger. No more skirting the issues. Walk tall. Besides we look a lot more attractive that way!

2 out of 5 stars Marginal, obvious advice for women in denial........2007-09-08

It's hard to believe there is a market for this book. I considered it so bad I wasn't even going to drag it over the public library and donate it. I was ready to pitch this book into the garbage after only half an hour of reading, but I struggled on over several weeks, reading little bits at a time thinking perhaps I just wasn't appreciating the book's attempts at New York humor.
The marginal advice filling it still doesn't seem worth the effort of carrying the book two blocks to the library. Its success must be a symptom of how confusing the role of the modern, liberated feminist in America has become? I suppose the book is based on the folklore that "love blinds." How else could perfectly sensible women be so confused as to not see the obvious? This is a book for women who are blind, in denial, desperate, confused, dumb, from Venus, totally inexperienced, spending too much time in psychoanalysis, spending too much time rationalizing everything some guy they think they want to marry says or does to the point of reaching a hopeful conclusion when all the facts say the opposite.
Save your money. The "Dear Abby, Annie, Beth, etc." columns in most newspapers provide much better advice than this lightweight tome that was probably only quickly written to separate a lot of very confused and naive women from their hard-earned money. Don't over-analyze men. Like politicians don't pay any attention to what they say unless it happens to match how they act. Men are pretty uncomplicated as a group. Women who spend hours dissecting them over lunch with their girlfriends can't even be certain the people providing them support don't have a different agenda as far as their success in love is concerned. If you want to know more about men, talk to your mother and lots and lots of men friends who aren't just interested in getting into your panties and then with their curiosity satisfied, are ready to move on to the next challenge. Male co-workers or acquaintances are much better sources of advice than this book.
This volume really wasn't worth this much time to review, but since so many readers seemed to think it contains "Insights from Heaven" I think they've got their directions confused. At best the information provided is so obvious that a child should be able to recognize it. Much of the more complicated advice is bull, or seems like it might have come from a laughing, horned and hoofed creature residing in a place far away from Heaven and hotter than the planet Venus.
