Book Description

Taking the primal therapy theory further, this book claims that repressed pain is bad not only for mental, but also for physical health. Quoting case histories, the author explains the benefits of applying his therapy, and uses examples such as helping people cope with their sexuality.

2 out of 5 stars new primal scream is relaunch of failed enterprise.......2007-09-18

I think Janov's book is too full of unscientific jumps of logic. Check out www.debunkingprimaltherapy.com it is explained well there. His assertion that it is only logical to pursue pain to reverse the effects of pain is simplistic. Even if it is true that in the forward direction, trauma causes psychological problems (true I think, and important), it does not neccessarily mean the reverse is obviously true - that to reexperience pain will lead to a joyful existence that resembles the joy of young children. In my experience, the results from primal therapy also shine doubt on Janov's assertions. It is a pity, because so much of the book is valuable and important, for example the emphasis of love, and the criticisms of robotically extinguishing behaviors with behaviorism (not all behaviorism is bad though) are all good. But Janov's theory is taken to the extremes in his books, and by his followers, spoiling the valid points that they make. For example, gentle births and avoiding birth traumas are noble and correct causes. However, claiming that ALL psychological problems may have birth trauma as the underlying cause is pushing it too far. Suggesting reliving birth over and over again will reverse the effects of birth is also getting wacky. (this is found more in Janovs books after 1971). Janovs works have a tendency to draw you in with true and emotional themes, but they take you too far into his single deterministic model, and get you beleiving in things that are not proven, and actually unlikely. His model of understanding fails in some circumstances (as do all the grand theories), and in some cases evidence exists that contradicts some of the theory (for example modern research on surgery suggested mammals do better WITH pain medication, in the Primal Scream Janov suggested avoiding pain meds wherever possible, something I thing he may now disagree with, but has made no formal retraction).
I would recommend learning about all the models in psychology to put this work in context, and look at all the recent data in the field 1990 to 2006. Despite Janov's attack on Freud, Primal is a derivative of Freudian work, with some of the similar problems and benefits that come from that model. The worst thing you could do is wrap yourself in a primal blanket, and think psychology's rejection of this work is somehow repressed or a conspiracy. Mainstream psychology would correctly argue that the evidence is mostly case study from a specific skewed population of Janov followers, at a specific time in their optimism and therapy cycle. Similar miraculous reports are found in spiritual healing practices, again with believer's testimony being emphasised and published when it is positive.
In addition, rememeber this work was written a long time ago, and the diatribe against other psychological treatments is out of date (and in part unfair even at the time). However some of the criticisms of other treatments were valid, and important.
Use scientific and critical thinking to make your own decisions about this work. It's not all wrong, if you have your wits about you and you filter the information, it could help fill your life with love and improve the life of your children. Janov is right, love is the most important thing is raising children, and he does a good job of defining love between an parent and child.
On the other hand, if you take all of it to heart, and to the extreme, and then go on to destroy all relations with your family, create false memories, and spend decades trying to cry, scream and holding your breath in birth primals, it might just spoil your life.
It could go either way, so think independently for yourself.
Consider too, I may be wrong, so look at all the data with a critical eye, and draw on all areas of psychological research for clues.

5 out of 5 stars Just Another Guy Who Thinks He Has "All The Answers".......2007-03-21

I am sorry to say that every once in a while some guy comes along who thinks he has THE ANSWER to everybody's problems. The author thinks he is that guy. So did David Koresh when I met him but that is another story. In this book Janov repeats his tired old worn out Themes of "Childhood Trauma, Repressed Pain" and the like. I consider Janov to have a serious problem with credibility as I am sure in one of his books he states "Primal People Don't Get Divorced" or words to that effect and he is in fact divorced from his first wife, Vivien. One also gets tired of Janov's constant referrals to his patients as being "nuerotics' . Also if you ain't got the cash for this Therapy Janov offers a "Finance Plan" while at the same time condemning the rampant overspending of people in today's society in his books. I give this bok 5 stars because the author has been consistent with his views for 37 years . You can draw you own conclusions from that somewhat disturbing fact.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Science!.......2006-10-18

This book is excellent because it explains "WHY". The book is not a "self help" book, it's an explanation of his theory and findings. I believe his theory is correct because he proves it with absolute science! It's not his opinion, it's the facts that he has found over the past 20+ years of research. He gives examples of why we feel bad, reasons that early development is where we get our "programming", and fits it into fact-based science. I stumbled upon this book when I looked up in the dictionary what the word "Visceral" really meant.

3 out of 5 stars Important Theory, encouraging love for children.......2006-02-27

I recommend this book due to it's great theory on pain and imprinting that I believe can help prevent imprinting lifelong pain.
However I cannot recommend Dr Janov's actual practice. My experience is that the therapists there, including himself, are pretty damaging, awful and judgemental. Many patients felt cheated by the promises in his books that they felt were exaggerations.
I found many negative details, such as therpist's misbehaviour, were kept secret from new patients. They were warned about talking to old patients.
There are reasons primal therapy didn't and will not flourish, it is not that there is a conspiracy against Janov or the therapists.

5 out of 5 stars An Update On An Outdated Therapy!!!(It Ain't 1978 No More Dr. Janov!!).......2005-07-23

This book was writen 20 years after Dr. Arthur Janov 'discovered" Primal Therapy and he STILL INSISTS that this is THE ONLY CURE for Mental Illness. He singlehandedly dismisses other Traditional, Legitimate Scientifically Proven Therapies throughout this book. One gets soon very weary of his constant referral to his patients as being "nuerotics". He also detest the rampant Consumerism in today's Society and yet he offers a "Finance Plan" to his potential clients. His Therapy seems to involve the patient lying in a dark room and saying" My mommie was mean to me which is why my life is bad". It seems as if Dr. Janov is still living in the 1970's where nearly everybody thought that Therapy was a way to "fix" their lives. There is nothing that Dr.Janov can offer which can't be fixed with a moderate dosage of Diazapam and Stelazine. I give this book 5 stars because I found the endless whining of his patients to be most amusing.

3 out of 5 stars This therapy may do more harm than good..........2007-05-10

I have several friends who went to the Primal Institute run by Janov and I myself did an "off-shoot" version of Primal Therapy. John Lennon also did the therapy for awhile although Janov said he did not finish.

When I read this book I intuitively felt it was on target. I had "natural" primals, without prompting, just from reading the book. So I was sold on it and went into therapy as soon as I could.

It did help me, I think, in some ways. But the "cure for neurosis"? Hardly!

What it did for me was make me realize that my parents - though mostly well-intentioned - did not do a very good job of child-rearing. These came in the form of insights on my own, through not only remembering but RE-LIVING scenes from my past. Crying and screaming about these scenes from the past (primaling or re-living) did help me relieve some pressure and feel better. It certainly "put me in touch with my feelings". It perhaps made me over-sensitive to feelings for a while, and put me in a space of fragility and openness that is quite different than the average person's.

But here's the deal. I know 4 other people who went through therapy with Janov or his therapists, and none of them have very good things to say about the experience. Were they all "failures"? Or does the therapy just not really work that well?

Ask Janov how many people under treatment at his Institute committed suicide. I have heard that the rate is very high, I'd like him to show his records and confirm what it was. Surely he has kept records, no? If I were considering going into his therapy, that is one stat I'd like to know!

Janov had some good ideas. He deluded himself into thinking he had The Answer. He does not.

I think the "Old" Primal Scream is one of the world wonder. But... It is already to old. To know more about Primal Therapy, you have to read Arthur Janov's new book:The new primal screem. The Primal Screen is only the begining of a big research program! I think the Primal Therapy will become more famous in the next years. The reasen is the work of Arthur Janov and Erik Hoffman abour Brainmapping. Brainmapping will be a very good diagnostic instrument. We already use it in some Primal Centers in Germany. If you like to read my opinion to the "NEW PRIMAL SCREAM", please click on this book. Vayase a buscar un traductor para leer mi opinion. Joerg Mayer

5 out of 5 stars An innovative and path-breaking approach to psychology.......1996-11-15

Janov writes a compelling and extremely readable account of the new paradigm in psychology that he innovated, Primal Therapy. This is one of the seminal works in Psychology; it is very important and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Happily back in print.......2004-08-05

The comic world suffered a long dry season, but now these seminal episodes of Transformers have been put out again. Genius work and a new beginning for a long-running and epochal series. You can see the dedication; the labor and the love rise right off the page like the smell of napalm in the morning.

5 out of 5 stars Every saga has a beginning, and this is it!.......2002-06-25

"Primal Scream" collects the first seven issues (#56-62) of Transformers comic book written by Simon Furman. When he came on, the comic was not doing well. The previous writer, Bob Budiansky, had started to write hack work (The Carwash of Doom, Micromaster Wrestling, the Mechannibals, the Roadjammers, Club Con, Prime killing himself over a video game, etc.), and things looked bleak. But Simon Furman, who had written most of the British series, saved the book, and kept it running for another two years. The book starts with Ratchet, who faces the task of repairing deactivated Transformers. It soon moves to the return of Megatron and Starscream, who launch a master plan that almost destroys everyone. This leads to the recreation of Grimock, Jazz, and Bumblebee, who end up stumbling upon their god, Primus, in the center of Cybertron, setting in motion a chain of events that make nothing ever the same again for the Transformers. These stories are timeless. Simon Furman might be a god himself, the way he writes with power and emotion and portrays the Transformers as a real war epic. The shows were not always that way. And he knows his characters. Each character, no matter how obscure, is cool and unique. At the same time, Geoff Senior's art work is amazing, making each character and location come to life on the page, as well as illustrating tough, gritty battle scenes. This book intrigued me enough to pre-order the next releases. I am a true Transfan, but you don't have to be to love this book. It is a pretty good introduction to newcomers. 'Til all are one!

5 out of 5 stars Special X #6, everything old is new again... or is it?.......2005-11-26

Of the 11 Special X books Michael Slade has written I have never told anyone to "read them in order." New comers to the series can start anywhere and become immersed in the wonderful world Michael Slade had given us...

Primal Scream, the sixth Special X books from bestselling author Michael Slade, is the one exception to that rule. This book CAN be read and enjoyed without reading the previous novels, but reading Headhunter first will increase the tension level within Primal Scream by ten fold.

A severed head is delivered to Robert DeClercq at Special X HQ and ten years of questions, guilt, and angst from the case that nearly destroyed him come thundering back to the forefront of DeClercq's life. Now the elite psycho hunters of Special X must race against the clock to catch a killer that should already be dead.

Primal Scream will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next shocking body blow to be delivered, while Michael Slade smiles and taunts you with what might happen next.

Filled with shock and suspense, Primal Scream will have you screaming for more.

2 out of 5 stars Primal Scream.......2004-11-19

The book I read was called Primal Scream. It was an ok book but I really didn't like it. It was kind of confusing but I got through it. The book is about a group of people in a jungle and they are looking for killers. Animals start to attack them. They have people give them strange gifts. People get body parts in boxes. One time this guy got a shrunken head as a gift. They would get arms, eyes, weird things like that.
I thought it was a little weird. If you like weird books then read this one. It is called Primal Scream By Michael Slade. Do you like suspense, do you like excitement then read This book. Its funny, scary and suspenseful. Maybe you will get a shrunken head too!

5 out of 5 stars A Canadian Thomas Harris.......2004-08-04

Once you've started one of Slade's books, you might give it up if you're not inured to violence and suspense, but otherwise he really keeps you wanting more. Once you've read MANHUNTER you'll want to find out more about LeCLERCQ and his obsession with killers of the past and present. PRIMAL SCREAM completes his voyage into the past, with the violent death of his own daughter a throbbing memory inside his brain compelling him to lead an investigation into a possible copy cat killer. There's even a young girl called KATT, as if to hint at a COPY KATT!!

Is Slade even a real person? I wonder if it isn't the pseudonym behind which a variety or people can make their feelings known on the topic of serial killing. One thing this putative syndicate could do to raise the standard of their books is to get some more imaginative titles. For example, HEADHUNTER and PRIMAL SCREAM. There must be dozens of books and movies already with those names. PRIMAL SCREAM is a psychoanalutical movement, for goodness sakes. The way Slade writes you'd think it was a heavy metal band.

Canada must be proud that for a country with not very many people (compared to the US) Slade has populated it with mad maniacs and determined grim-jawed cops in pursuit. And plenty of victims whose blood is rich with riboflavin.

3 out of 5 stars Very strange and gruesome..........2004-01-11

Being cooped up in the house during the weather led to a bit more reading time. That, and a two hour commute on light rail. Anyway, I just finished Primal Scream by Michael Slade. A strange and gruesome book that doesn't rank among my favorites. To start with, I think that much of the character development takes place in his earlier book Headhunter (which I haven't read). As a result, there were continual references to people and events that I didn't know anything about but that were important to this story. Next, there are two crime stories going on here that may or may not be interrelated, and it was confusing to figure out what was going on, and why. Third, there are vivid depictions of rape and sexual fetish stuff that is key to the story. Not for the squeamish. The storyline is that there are killings (beheadings, actually) that are going on, and they are similar to a crime spree from the first book. DeClerq is trying to solve the crime and figure out if they perhaps killed the wrong person on the earlier case. Some suspenseful moments to be sure, but very disturbing and somewhat confusing to follow...

3 out of 5 stars Not for the weak of heart.......2003-01-21

This series of books is not for the squeamish or the faint of heart. I found that after reading a few they became a bit repetative.

2 out of 5 stars Read this review of Primal Scream and It Will Open Your Eyes.......2007-05-12

I read the Primal Scream over 30 years ago and was completely convinced that this was the answer, that more importantly, no person would make the claims that the Arthur Janov was making without them being true.
So I found someone nearby where I lived who ran a Primal Instiute and did Primal Therapy for 5 years religiously 3 times a week after having a 3 week intensive. The problem I had gone there for was for stuttering and in the Primal Scream there were references to where a person was cured of his stuttering and indications by Janov that it could be cured by Primal Therapy and that any other approach was destined to fail.
As the years went by and I read more and more of Janov's books as they came out in the 1970s and 1980s there were more indications by Janov that he could cure stuttering. Well after 5 years of Primal Therapy my speech had actually gotten worse. Now I understand that Janov in the Primal Scream and other books indicates that he was/is the only therapist in the world who can do proper Primal Therapy and I accept this. Perhaps this is why my stuttering was not cured or helped in any way when I did Primal Therapy at a different location. But in a recent series of e-mails 2007 between myself and Arthur Janov's Primal Center I was told, to my astonishment, that not only did they not have much experience with stuttering but that they never indicated that they could cure it. I wrote back and indicated that I could show him where in his books he could find this statements about curing stuttering and where in his book, the "bible" of Primal Therapy, Primal Man, where it was stated that "primal therapy cures stuttering". The Janovs ignored this piece of information and continued to state that they never said they could cure stuttering in their e-mails back to me. They asked me what I wanted of them and I said to put a statement in this upcoming book "Primal Healing" to tell people that, unfortunately, Primal Therapy does not cure stuttering. If you check Primal Healing you will see that they didn't do it. I leave it up to the reader of this review as to their own conclusions. The real question now becomes: what else did they say they could cure and can not?

5 out of 5 stars An Outdated Therapy For The "Me" Generation Of The 1970's!!!.......2005-07-23

This book was first published in the 1970's when it appeared that nearly everybody was dissatisfied with their lives and sought a "Miracle Cure" through Therapy. In this book Dr. Janov displays gross intolerance for legitimate, proven Traditional Therapies and insists he has THE CURE(!!!) for self obsessed "neurotics' as he refers to his patients. Furthermore he detests the overspending by consumers in our Society yet he offers a "Finance Plan" to his potential troubled clients. It seems like his Therapy involves lying down in a dark room and saying things like "Mommie why is Daddy so mean to me and how come he drinks so much?' . There is nothing that Dr. Janov can offer which can't be fixed by a moderate dosage of Diazapam and Stelazine. I give this book 5 stars because I did find the endless whinings of his patients to be most amusing.

you have found the Book. So now you must read it. If you're interested in Life. Human life. Primal theory isn't magic, except insofar as the laws of physics are magic. A sign of Primal theory's truth-value-usefulness is the intensity-depth of the insights resultant from its practice, or contemplation. Janov simply gets deeper into it than most. Deeper into everything. This isn't to say I believe what he believes. I happen to think Darwinism is totally wacky. How arrogant is it to think you know the origins of mind?

As youngsters, we have innate mental and biological needs. The need to be loved. The need for our mother not to drink alc while pregnant. And yes, love is not extra, something needed only by wimps. Love is the substance without which a child becomes neurotic, or split from his real needs, embracing symbolic needs, like the need for power, the need for too much food, the need to perform perverse sexual acts. Without love, Primal Pain is created, which may be too strong to be fully felt by a child, who represses this Pain and its meaning. Repressed truth doesn't disappear, it returns to exert physiologic pressure that haunts us, gives us allergies, headaches, addictions, disease. The only escape from Pain is to feel it, to become conscious, to wake up to our sickness, and become our real selves, become ex-neurotic.

I tend to believe that reading ThePrimalScream is almost as good as getting the therapy. But what do I know--I've been without a partner for a decade. Brains are computers, and computers do wierd things sometimes.

5 out of 5 stars How your past affects your life and how to heal........2000-03-16

This book is a great book. It is everything that you might think it is. Tackling - how people deal with pain, What is Pain (to human organisms), and how to heal from Pain. While at first it may seem like a mystical trance-like therapy, its not. The first 50 pages (or so) deal with the theory behind Primal Therapy. It defines primal Pain, and discusses how it affects our life, day to day. This part is somewhat unsupported. Dr. Janov leaves the evidence to support his theory for the rest of the book. With patient journals and case histories, the rest of the book tackles topics including sexuality, fear, hope, and anger. It is the rest of the book, through the patient journals and case histories, that make the book real. (and easy to read).

2 out of 5 stars some really good parts, but also cult like circular thinking..........2000-01-01

think Janov's book The Primal Scream is too full of unscientific jumps of logic.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Gillespie is God.......2004-07-29

With Primal Scream you're in a different realm than most other UK rock bands. The pictures do tell the tale, the photos collected by Kris Needs in this book YOU Needs to Own. Bobby G was nearly 30 when the band really started to go places, and he had a maturity even then that saw them in good stead even in the days of SONIC FLOWER GROOVE.

The graininess of some of the photos is appropriate for a band that didn't care about the dominant style but made their own style, even luring Kate Moss into the madness, as she played Nancy Sinatra in a remake of the old Hazelwood classic SOME VELVET MORNING (when I'm straight, ha).

All in all, it's a book you may want to ownif you feel about Bobby Gillespie & Co. the way I do. My copy's all tattered to pieces from constant rubbing. Scream the Scream!

5 out of 5 stars PRIMAL SCREAM FANS: HERE'S YER BOOK!.......2004-06-11

Primal Scream are one of the greatest bands in the world today. Few people know this. But the few fans of Primal Scream will LOVE this book! Many many photos of the band. A nice thick book with lots of small (not overly large) print - you get your money's worth for sure!!! No color pics, but the pics included are a nice selection, including lots of magazine covers and lots of cool shots of Bobby G. Right up-to-date with mention of DIRTY HITS and full discography. Analysis of each album included amongst many fascinating stories about band. If you haven't heard Primal Scream, don't start here - start with the CD, DIRTY HITS. You will NOT regret it!!!!

          Book Description

John Adams, Jr., suffers from two biological maladies: a big mouth and an overactive brain. He treats us to both in The Dreams and Primal Screams of P. K. Nobody, sounding off on evil right-wingers, his Pentecostal upbringing, a wild and rocky teaching career, and the path to salvation from a self-imposed hell.

You might be inspired or offended by this book, but Adams will never bore you. In fact, if you're not careful, you may even find yourself strangely compelled to question your most deeply held beliefs.
