One doesn't usually think of rock stars as insightful, but, against all odds, glam-trash superstar Marilyn Manson has written a book that is actually an intelligent look at growing up. This autobiographical bildungsroman brings out the creepiest aspects of childhood, conveying the terror and fascination that young Marilyn (then called Brian) felt when looking through his grandfather's pornography, getting his first French kiss, and being taunted by the girls he wanted to "date." Manson has the benefit of having grown up as an outcast and loser and then having become a star without forgetting what he went through. This gives him an incredibly broad perspective, which he brings to bear on his ordinary life in order to convey the more potent and frightening moments that shaped him into the pale-skinned weirdo that the Christian Right loves to hate. Best of all, Manson is shockingly honest, and portrays himself as occasionally stupid, self-centered, over-sensitive, ignoble, and, mostly, highly fallible and human. It's a long way from the auto-hagiographies that other stars have written, and it's easily one of the best reads in celebrity bio. --James DiGiovanna
Book Description
The best–selling autobiography of America's most controversial celebrity icon, Marilyn Manson (with a bonus chapter not in the hardcover).
In his twenty–nine years, rock idol Manson has experienced more than most people have (or would want to) in a lifetime. Now, in his shocking and candid memoir, he takes readers from backstage to gaol cells, from recording studios to emergency rooms, from the pit of despair to the top of the charts, and recounts his metamorphosis from a frightened Christian schoolboy into the most feared and revered music superstar in the country. Illustrated with dozens of exclusive photographs and featuring a behind–the–scenes account of his headline–grabbing Dead to the World tour.
Customer Reviews:
Wow! Well written and intriguing. I couldn't put it down!.......2007-10-17
I'm a huge fan of Manson, and this book made me appreciate him even more. You won't regret it, and the price is right as well.
A Fantastic Masterpiece .......2007-10-07
This book was fantastic! Ever wonder why Manson is as unusual as he is? READ THIS BOOK. I couldn't put it down. It explains it all. You wouldn't believe all the things he has lived through. This twisted tale turns out to be very insightful and is filled with true reality and wonderful thoughts and quotes. " The boy you love, is the man you fear." is just an example. I'm not that great at writing reviews but I can reassure that this book rocks.
Awsome service.......2007-08-23
I got my book in about 2 days in perfect condition, I couldn't have asked for more
AMAZING.......2007-08-14
this book is one of the best, most interesting books ive read in a while. i may be biased because i have been listening to manson since i was in 3rd or 4th grade when PORTRAIT came out, but regardless, it is VERY well written, he is extremely smart which alot of people dont realize, and if you have a sense of humor like i do, you will find parts of this book to be absolutely hysterical (such as his first experience with certain drugs etc.) ...if you like manson or his music i HIGHLY suggest you read this book, if your anti-manson, or new to him, then you may not enjoy it as much, but it will definitely give you another perspective of his life other than how he portrays himself on stage... it seems we all have a little more in common with mr. manson than we may like to believe
long hard road .......2007-08-12
this is a veary nice book about mr manson a short little summary of his life and how he got started a bunch of early drawing by him photos and this in that its another look then how we see him on stage

Another of Satan's Spiderwebs.......2004-09-02
If you decide to review Anton's "The Satanic Bible" this would be
an interesting read as well. It gives a further look into Anton's mindset and Frame of Reference. I found him to be a bit morose in his thinking and outlook. Anton's opinion is only one opinion on social commentary - which he was entitled to his opinion. Not everyone would agree with him - but he does make a few good points however. I don't find him totally off base in his thoughts. For the record - Anton did not invent the Church of Satan much against what some would like to believe - A little Research on the subject might suggest different. Bringing it into a more socially acceptable/public forum light might be more accurate. Satan likes and thrives on the uninformed and Satanic Prophets like Anton. 2 Timothy 3:1-5
Ehhhh.......2004-06-11
This book does contain a few good perspectives and essays, but I wouldn't waste my time. When I say a few, I mean a few. The further and further I got into the book, the less impressed I was with LaVey, and the more I considered him a JOKE. Just tonight, I read a whole list of LaVey's lies - on the churchofsatan.org website nonetheless! But anyways, this book sucks. Check out some Nietzsche or Crowley instead.
Chicken Soup for the Atheist and Misanthropic Soul........2003-09-12
You'll find LaVey's cynicism and dark humor intact in this book. This book is a fun read and isn't as bullet holed as his other work with LaVey's spiritually non-spiritual philisophy. Nice one-liners that can be woven into your own conversation and make you the silver tongued golden boy of your counter culture social cliche'. LaVey's life is filled with controversy, lies, and mild delusion. Truth being untold over his decades of involvement with CoS. Truth being lost to his grave. Truth likely being lost years before his own death. This is LaVey's last work and it's like he knows it. It's an interesting look at a man, without a god to answer to, facing his death.
Nice little collection of essays from good 'ol Uncle Anton.......2003-02-14
Published after his death, Anton LaVey's Satan Speaks does not focus on one immediate subject; but is instead a collection of essays from the founder of the Church of Satan on late 20th century culture. Such passages contain LaVey's rants on child abuse, connections between a Satanist and a Jew, abortion, and my favorite, the laugh out loud "Don't Bathe" which features LaVey's rampant celebration of body odor. Although it seems that most of Satan Speaks is more self indulged than any of LaVey's other works, it is still a great read nonetheless, and the bits of dark humor throughout will guarantee a chuckle or two out of any Satanist or fan of LaVey's work.
For completists only.......2003-02-02
The essays which make up the book "Satan Speaks" were written by Anton Szandor LaVey as his life drew to a close. His life would be considered exhausting by any standard, and in reading "Satan Speaks" his fatigue was apparent. Gone is the revolutionary spirit that went into "The Satanic Bible" and, to a slightly lesser degree, "The Devil's Notebook." It is largely replaced by crabbiness and an almost pathetic attempt at justifying his existence. For example, in the essay, "My Enemy" LaVey bemoans the fact that he can no longer by an ice cream cone for a nickle because of other people's greed. Where is the LaVey who called greed a Satanic virtue? Other essays seem to be aimed at puffing himself up as THE figure of evil. In a list of self-quotes he applauds himself for being the only person to codify Satanic thought. Was he expecting thanks for doing so doing so? Wasn't vain and empty self-promotion one of the things he heckled the Christian church for?
Despite this, "Satan Speaks" does offer some excellent essays. One essay on invisibility gives a free lesson in practical magic. Another titled "Sleepers, Scarcity and Orphans" articulately champions the cause of maintaining individual identity against the forces of mediocrity. In short, this isn't a bad book, but it is an inconsistent one. If one is simply curious about the founder of the church of Satan, I recommend "The Devil's Notebook." For serious students there is "The Satanic Bible." I can only recommend "Satan Speaks" to those who feel the need to read everything LaVey wrote.
Book Description
A detailed look into the life Marilyn Manson, one of the music world's most colorful and controversial figures. Every generation needs an outlaw, and as a new millennium began, Marilyn Manson was America's Most Wanted. Like a computer game come to life, he's playing a role and inviting us to join his fantasy world. This is his story, in his own words. With color photos.
QUOTES INCLUDE:
`While Columbine was a terrible tragedy, it's not the first. It's kind of displeasing to hear people treat it like it is. It's displeasing for the President to decry violence in America while at the same time he's sending bombs overseas to kill other people.';
`I was paid for sex once. I received $100 in cash and prizes because the girl didn't exactly have the entire $100 but she did have a credit card so she bought me some shoes.';
`I would rather put out records that do well every year and do that for 10 or 20 years, than one or two that do really great and then disappear. The faster you burn, the quicker you're gone and I plan on sticking around.';
`There's been a lot of bland and happy-go-lucky music created over the past six or seven years. I didn't really support Bush, but I hope we get some good right-wing Manson hating people in office so I can piss them off.'
Book Description
Marilyn Manson's fixations with death, drugs, and the devil have made him the living embodiment of the evils of rock and roll among concerned parents and Christian fundamentalists — and wildly popular with his mostly teenage audience. Dissecting Marilyn Manson explores the full scope of the Manson mystique, revealing what makes him tick and why so many fans find his image and music utterly compelling. Heavily visual in its approach, the book forms a pathological scrapbook, cutting through the Manson persona in an irreverent yet authoritative fashion. Each chapter peels back layers of rumor and hearsay to examine the influences, obsessions, and events that reveal the true anatomy of the androgynous superstar. This new edition offers the legions of Marilyn Manson fans an alternative perspective on his macabre world, from his quiet, normal childhood spent with devout Christian parents to his upcoming marriage with fetish model Dita Von Teese.

A must for understanding Manson........2006-04-05
This book reads like a "works cited" page for Marilyn Manson's life. It's basically a list of all the influences on his music, fashion, philosophy, religious views, and general tastes in things like movies and books. It also gives an explanation for why all of these are relative to Manson, although I'm sure this is in the author's perception and not his own. This book is a must for those that want to understand why Marilyn Manson is the way he is. It does a much better job than his own autobiography, which I consider to be more entertainment than knowledge. I highly recommend reading both books, they serve as excellent companions to one another since neither give the complete story.
2nd Book.......2005-07-14
This is one of the best Marilyn Manson books I've ever read, besides of course "The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell", without lies. which is mostly what you could find on a MM book.
This book is great.......2004-06-11
I read it in 2 days. The way it is presented in organized is amazing. You learn about so much in so few pages. The only flaw is a few minor inaccuracies. Get this book!

A Good Marilyn Manson Book,However Tends to Drag.......2004-01-11
When Kurt Reighley wrote this book I don't think he actually realized that fans of Marilyn Manson were gonna wanna read this due to the fact it's about Marilyn Manson.However the book will talk about Manson and then it will just all of a suden turn into a serial killer bio,with three pages about Charles Manson,and also small bios on Albert Fish,Henry Lee Lucas,Ed Gein,John Wayne Gacy,and David Berkowitz.This book is supposed to be about Marilyn Manson and the band,not the serial killers that inspired the band to change their names.Now i'll read anything that has to do with Marilyn Manson if I can get my hands on it and I don't care if it is terrible I will read it cover to cover,but this book is not for a person who wants to know about MM.Not to mention this book sounds almost like it was written by ex-Manson guitarist Daisy Berkowitz.Read this if you're obscessed with Marilyn Manson,but if you want the facts straight,read his autobiography.
just as great as mansons.......2002-02-18
i thought, since i was getting the autobiography, that there was no way i needed to have 2 manson books. but i saw a review that said, 'a great gap-filler!' and even though marilyns book was very satisfying, i decided i would take a chance. this book is really great, it has a lot of mansons very own quotes, and even though berkowitz is somewhat harsh, it is understandable he feels that way. it was very well written and includes trivial, yet wonderful little goods like the fact that brian warner favors calvin klein boxer briefs & the 9 satanic statements. a few nice photos and interviews. this is mostly about marilyn manson the band, not just mm the persona, or mm the person for that matter.
the truest manson fan ever!!!.......1999-09-28
The best book I have ever read in my life. I don't understand how a person could go through all that and still go on with his life... I always tell people that diss manson to at least read his book once. and than tell me what they think... I love this man and his book!!!!
The long hard road out of hell.

This is a kicking little book.......1999-06-29
This book is perfect for someone who wants to get in on what Manson's about. Also hardcore fans should have it. It tells the story of the band from the early days and sets the story straight. Its also really enjoyable to read. The author did an excellent job.
Totally Un-informative to the average Manson fan BUT..........1998-11-04
This book is pure fodder to anyone that cares enough about Manson to actually buy this book because we'd already know everything but I give it four stars for two reasons... If you want to give a friend that just doesn't get Manson's quest a quick reader to help them understand him a little better and also disperse some rumors, then this is a book that's short enough and easy enough for anyone to read, something the official autobiography lacks. Overall to anyone buying this book for information it's a bit dissapointing, there is some disinformation but that's to be expected. As for the pictures, they're great nd really the only reason I'd rebuy the book, that and the fact thast I'm a total fanatic but you know... :o)
Its an O.K. Read.......1998-08-17
This book is good if your a manson fan and looking for some pics but if you are buying it for the info. on the band then you will not be that satisfied. If u are a big Manson Fan then you will already know all the info that is in the book! Also, when i bought this book all the pages fell out after a couple of days. The binding of the book isn't any good. Buy another book. Don't waste your money!
A MUST READ.......1998-06-23
this has many great facts, not including the pictures, i would buy this book again if i already read it from a friend
It was okay..........1998-05-07
This book it written by every thing I already knew about Manson. If you listen to the news or have there cds or even been to there concerts, you probably already know all the stuff in this book also...
