Jesus' Teachings on Salvation.......2007-10-10
"The gospel in vogue today holds forth a false hope to sinners. It promises them they can have eternal life yet continue to live in rebellion against God." ~ John F. MacArthur
John F. MacArthur presents a more radical approach to Christianity. In "The Gospel According to Jesus" he takes the reader on a journey to the heart of Jesus' message. This book is the result of seven years of serious study and it shows. He answers the following questions:
What is authentic faith in Christ?
What is a true conversion?
Will asking Jesus into your heart get you to heaven?
Can you become a believer if you don't repent of your sins?
What are the signs of a true believer?
If you have ever had any doubts about your salvation this is a very interesting read. Not only does the author base his teachings on the words of Christ, he explains them in ways I've never heard before. I was very interested in his comparison between Nicodemus and the woman by the well. He also brings a much fuller understanding to biblical stories of salvation.
"The mark of a true disciple is not that he never sins, but rather that when he does sin he inevitably returns to the Lord to receive cleansing and forgiveness." ~ pg. 111
John F. MacArthur makes some excellent points about the life of a Christian after conversion. Many of the topics discussed will shock you back into the reality of Christ's true teachings. Throughout this book he explains the spiritual truths in Jesus' parables.
What I appreciated most about this work was the emphasis on Jesus' teachings and the excellent translation of Jesus' ideas for our modern society. If you are willing to take an honest look at your faith then I can highly recommend this to you. I can honestly say that the teachings in this book will lead you to a much happier life as a Christian. You can test out the theories and teachings and decide what is true in your own life.
~The Rebecca Review
Excellent book .......2007-07-20
This book demonstrates that the author has thought carefully about the issues involved. The book is inspiring, deep and gives much food for thought. I have a fresh appreciation and understanding for a number of Jesus's parables after reading this book. Highly recommended for those who like to grapple with meaning behind Christ's teachings and apply it to their life.
Very good book.......2007-06-30
It once-and-for-all refutes the false doctrine of "easy-believism" (correctly termed as "easy-credulism" in Spanish)! I highly recommend it.
A Much Needed Corrective to a Faulty Gospel.......2007-06-20
This book is a must read for any minister of the Gospel. The stakes are too high to ignore John MacArthur's message, for some are in peril of stepping into eternity unsaved because ministers who should know better have given them a faulty, unbiblical gospel and a false security. I confess that I was astounded at my first reading of "The Gospel According to Jesus" to discover that seminary professors from one of the most respected evangelical seminaries in the country have been teaching salvation without repentance and that one can actually cease to believe in Christ yet still be saved. Had MacArthur not footnoted every quote, I would not have believed it. However, led by the footnotes, I purchased and read the books by those errant professors and found MacArthur's assessment to be accurate. It is little wonder that so many professing Christians look no different from the world in which they live. They have never been truly converted to genuine faith in Jesus Christ.
Mostly good.......2007-05-25
I knew about the whole lordship controversy for about a decade now and was perplexed by the intensity of the debate at that time. I knew that justification was by faith alone but could not understand why some pastors and scholars "added" conditions to the gospel message. After ten years (and with enough formal and informal theological study) I have a much clearer idea of what this debate was really about.
First off, I must commend John MacArthur for fighting against the easy-believism gospel that is rampant in evangelical churches today. With the popularity of the health-wealth gospel, the seeker-sensitive movement, and the Emerging Church movement with an accompanying very shallow and insipid gospel message books like these must be published more and more to combat the truth decay that exists in many evangelical churches today. Many professing Christians today have joined the bandwagon of leeching off the blessings of Christ while at the same time avoiding any sort of discipleship and fruit-bearing for the Kingdom. This book points out the serious problems with this view and attitude.
One of the things that many people will find helpful in this book is MacArthur's profuse use of Scripture to defend the view that true believers will bear fruit in varying degrees on a consistent basis. Though he mostly relies on the passages in the Gospels, he also cites passages in the Pauline and other apostolic letters to advocate his view. Those who advocate a cheap grace view of the gospel will struggle hard to reconcile their view with passages like Matthew 7:13-27; 16:24-25; 24:13; 25:31-46; Mark 4:13-20; Luke 13:1-9; 18:18-27; John 15:1-11; Romans 6:1-11; 8:13; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21; 6:8; Ephesians 5:5; Philippians 3:17-19; Colossians 1:23; 3:5-7; Hebrews 4:1-14; 6:4-6; 10:26-31; James 2:14-26; 2 Peter 2:20-22; 1 John 3:6-9; Jude 21; Revelation 21:8. Scripture, it appears, is decidedly against the cheap grace understanding of the gospel.
Another part of the book I liked is MacArthur's chapter on justification by faith (chap. 18). I thought this was one of the finest treatments on justification based on Luke 18:9-13. Contrary to what some opponents might claim, MacArthur does strongly affirm justification by faith alone. He also emphatically states that justification is a purely forensic declaration by God of the sinner solely on the grounds of Christ's righteousness and sacrifice. It is imputed and once-for-all. This chapter should quell the accusations that MacArthur's view of the gospel is Romish or legalistic.
Though the book is mostly well written and convincing, I still had some issues with the way MacArthur understood the whole faith, works, and justification paradigm. Though I wholeheartedly agree with MacArthur's stance that all true believers will bear fruit in varying degrees and will not totally or finally fall away from the faith, there were times where I thought MacArthur overstressed the matter. There were times where he dangerously equated faith with the fruits of faith (i.e., obedience to God's commands). Though genuine faith will issue in good works (James 2:26), faith is still purely a humble trust in the saving promises of God found in Jesus Christ. Though I agree that faith is not merely intellectual assent, we still cannot transform the nature of saving faith to combat antinomianism in modern-day evangelicalism. Faith is still a beggar reaching out his hand to the giver (as Luther once pointed out). If you want a more biblical and balanced understanding of the issue of the relationships between faith, works, sins in the Christian life, and justification then I recommend you read stuff by Darrell Bock, Robert Saucy, S. Lewis Johnson, and Michael Horton.
Overall, I recommend this book. It is a needed book in our time to show many church-goers what it truly means to be a child of God.

Character Inside before Power Accumulates Outside: That's How Leaders Evolve.......2007-05-11
I found this book fascinating as the authors focus on the internal world of leaders who are trustworthy, and the nurture of a character that others will want to follow. My favorite quotes:
--To be teachable, one must devote a significant amount of time to learning.
--Leaders are defined buy those who follow them.
--A successful mentoring experience does require a significant prerequisite: a quality person to mentor.
--The mentoring or coaching role is mainly about creating a safe environment to discuss any topic.
--Trustworthiness means being reliable, faithful, and unfailing. Trustworthy leaders are honest and transparent, committed, dedicated, and keep promises and confidences. They also have the moral courage to do the right thing and to stand up for what they believe even when it is difficult to do so.
--In practical, day-to-day leadership, only what is accomplished matters.
--Compared to high-profile leaders with big personalities who make headlines and become celebrities, the good-to-great leaders [leaders who have taken companies to unprecedented long-term growth] seem to have come from Mars. Self-effacing, quiet, reserved, even shy--these leaders are a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will. They are more like Lincoln and Socrates than Patton or Caesar.
For aspiring leaders, this book will help you clarify the character traits needed inside before the power accumulates outside.
SPIRITUAL VALUES & LEADERSHIP.......2005-05-20
Presents a style of leadership based on 8 values: humility; development; commitment; focus; compassion; integrity; peacemaking; and endurance. The authors explore how these spiritual values are keys to building trust with people and becoming a successful leader, as well as building a successful career. This book has its distinct point of view-no question about it. But given the abundance of bad leadership in business, politics, and other spheres, the spiritual qualities this book links with effective leadership deserve serious consideration.
Changed my Life.......2005-05-18
The "how to" leadership books are spilling off the shelves, so I thought that "Trust Me" to be another ineffective book on this subject. However, as I began to read I couldn't put the book down. I read it through in 2 days. I've then re-read it 2 times. It is GREAT!
Ron Potter and Wayne Hastings have managed to peel away to the true core of leadership.
From insight about the greatest leader of all time to colorful stories about other leaders, it's a riveting book.
This book has personally changed my life and my leadership style. I have incorporated the principles from the book and have created personal goals in an attempt to be a better leader.
If you lead people...either a business executive, production line worker, a team player or a parent, "Trust Me' is essential reading.
Great Book for all Leaders.......2004-04-10
Trust Me is one of those rare books that provides timeless insights with personal insights and help for all of us. Hastings and Potter take the reader on a leadership journey and challenge us at the end of each chapter with thought-provoking questions and personal growth suggestions. I literally could not put this book down! It has helped me and my team to understand how we can be successful leaders. This is a must read for any person wanting to improve their leadership skills.
Trust Me - Keys to building trust in people.......2004-04-06
Wayne Hastings and Ron Potter have written an inspirational book that provides the key principles we all need to guide us in our personal and business lives. It is a book to be kept close at hand to keep our thinking and actions on the path of a principle based life. The real life stories and the opportunity provided to reflect after each chapter with thought provoking questions about ourselves and how we interact with others helps teach us how to be leaders others can trust.

My children love this book.......2004-03-16
On a recent trip to Bali we spent the day looking for ducks being herded just like in this story and eventually, just before sunset, we found a mother and son in a rice field, with a pole, and watched the ducks being taken home to get their dinner! Such a lovely story, even better to know that it is based on truth!

From best-selling author John MacArthur, Follow Me reiterates the call of Jesus, offers insight into ways people respond to it, and encourages readers not just to follow, but to follow through. Women followed Jesus to learn His teaching and to support His ministry. The sick followed Jesus to receive divine healing. The rejects followed Jesus to receive God's acceptance. The disillusioned followed Jesus to receive His hope. All those reasons-and many more-still hold true today. This broad-scoped study of Jesus' followers gives bite-sized portions of insight for followers of today and provides them with the tools necessary to continue heeding the call to follow Him.

Follow Me explains discipleship.......2005-09-14
Follow Me is a great book to use as an introduction to exploring the disciples of Christ. It's easy reading so that those who are new to the faith as well as young adults will understand. It explores the differences in character of each disciple, as well as how each played an important part in spreading Christianity.
Quickie book on the call of Christ.......2005-02-10
This book isn't bad for what it is - a sermon series converted to print and matched with a lot of pretty pictures. A decent gift book, I guess, but without the depth I've come to expect from John MacArthur.
Book Description
Follow Me examines the kingdom of heaven, challenging you to examine the kingdoms you set up that keep you from truly following Jesus.

Kingdom living here and now!.......2007-05-28
The absolute best book on the Christian life that I have ever read, and I've read hundreds of them! I have searched for years for someone to explain to me in plain English why it is that American Christianity is, for the most part, a powerless, fruitless, and meaningless existence. Jan Hettinga has done that and more! He's made it clear why and how to be set free from that kind of existence. I praise God for using Jan to write this book! I use it to teach Christians of all ages, from teens to senior citizens, and what a joy it is to see the fire that is rekindled within them when they recognize that their lives, lived out in the Kingdom here on earth, are filled with meaning and purpose! I cannot say enough good things about this book, and best of all, you can get a discipleship training program CD from Jan's church. I have it, I use it, and I give it and the book my highest praise! The best thing I can say about it is that it has made my bible reading and study much more perceptive and intense as I now "get it"! Thanks Jan!
Must-read on being a Christian.......2005-01-04
I have been a pastor for 11 years and I have yet to run across a book that better explains the gospel than Follow Me. In a day when too many Americans "pray the prayer" and put their life in cruise control, Hettinga offers in a very readable, profound, yet clear-cut manner what being a Christ-follower truly means. His chapters are short, to-the-point and well illustrated. He uses a lot of little pictures and charts to drive home his points. I used this book in my men's small group this past year (2004) and it revolutionized several of the guys in terms of life and purpose. All of the guys confessed to not being able to put it down, including the self-described "non-readers". Our group is a mix between seasoned Christians, brand-new believers and one seeker and they all found this to be a book that was must-reading!!
Compelling.......2003-05-30
Hettinga offers a compelling perspective on what it truly means to be a follower of Christ. He raises the problem with the evangelical gospel presentation and then redeigns it within the context of the Biblical concept of the "kingdom of God." Though sometimes bordering Lordship salvation, I think he is correct in reinserting the reign of Christ in the gospel presentation. When a person comes to Christ, he is giving up the reins. I recommend this book for any Christian who seriously wants to follow Jesus Christ in the biblical sense.
INCREDIBLE.......2001-07-06
What a fantastic insight to the Christian path! It is such an incredible blessing to have the most powerful and important relationship of our life explained in a "simpler" point of view. This book has made a dramatic impact on my personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Follow Me is Commitment.......2001-05-21
Jan Hettinga gave me a copy of this book in 1996 but I didn't read it until 2000. Since then I have not stopped recommending it to my Christian friends. Its message of genuine commitment of servant to Master is desperately needed in our world today. I have purchased over 30 copies to give or sell to people whom I have urged to read it. It is a life-changing book for anyone who wants to get serious about living for Christ.

Follow Me Home.......2004-11-28
Once considered too proud, when Alcea O'Malley hits a rough spot in life, some note that fall from grace with glee. Cheated on and divorced by her husband, she has little money and less self esteem. Losing her home to foreclosure is the icing on the cake. Then, she runs into the man who was once the boy she loved, Dakota Jones, or Dak. With his help, she is able to begin putting her life back together, but within his family lies the secret behind her downfall, and Dak himself is haunted by his less than ideal past. Though the road to happiness is rocky, Alcea can navigate it, if Dak is willing to go with her, but he might realize how much she needs him and vice versa too late.
**** Both quirky and heartwarming, Follow Me Home speaks to any one who has had the rug yanked out from beneath them. Characters come across in a balanced way, no one is lily white, and few are all bad. Yet, despite being realistic, it is never harsh, only hopeful. ****
intriguing contemporary romance .......2004-10-27

FOLLOW ME HOME is an intriguing contemporary romance starring a woman whose life fell apart at every turn (initially has a soap opera feel of trauma following disaster, etc.), but she comes back with the help of the man she loves. The story line contains a solid cast, but belongs predominantly to the beleaguered heroine. As she recovers her equilibrium, Alcea brings the message of hope to Dak and to readers that even when life seems at its darkest believe in your self worth and you can do anything.

Overcoming the fear of the "blank canvas".......2001-04-29
This book is a brilliant instruction book for both beginners and more experienced watercolourists. Highly recommended for beginners to watercolour who don't know where or how to start.
Tony Smibert takes you step-by-step through a series of painting exercises designed to free your creative juices while teaching the art of watercolour from basic washes through to more advanced techniques. He begins with simple wash and brushstoke instruction and takes the artist through to completed landscapes. I particularly liked his ideas on framing the earlier exercises as complete works of art in their own right.
He has apparently spent a great deal of time in Japan, and it shows in the powerful, yet simple techniques he employs and paintings he produces. His landscapes have a wonderfully atmospheric quality that he manages to teach to the reader. His instruction is detailed in a clear and easy to follow manner while leaving ample scope for the more adventurous students to apply their own interpretations to the paintings.
This book has given me the confidence to try anything - no longer do I stare at a blank sheet of paper fearful of the first stroke, or wondering where to begin. I find myself going back to his basic exercises to "limber-up" before starting on a larger project, or simply to have a bit of fun when I'm too busy to complete a "proper" work. He also has two videos available to accompiany the book which I have found invaluable, but not essential.

a passionate story of love that transcends time .......2007-04-24
Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques
When I first read the description of Follow Me by Mary Beth Bass I was quite fascinated with the concept and just had to give it a try. After all, who can resist the idea of a ghostly doctor falling in love with a modern woman who is the reincarnation of his lost love?
Claire Islington lives with the memory of a long ago night of passion and romance that very nearly killed her. Though she has since completed recovery from the resulting breakdown she cannot get the memory of her handsome ghost lover out of her mind. Seven years later she returns to confront the memory one last time, for she is about to embark on a new life with her boyfriend Ian. Can she finally put that passion out of time aside for a new love in Ian?
Kate Ishingham is a 19th century European woman far advanced in her thinking for the times. Trained as a physician, she is on the brink of a scientific discovery that can change life for everyone. But she is a woman and no one takes her seriously until she meets Harcourt Abernathy. Side by side they work to reach a breakthrough, and discover a love that transcends their lives. Until she dies for her career.
Harcourt is beside himself with misery over the loss of his soul mate. Finally leaving England and the memories he cannot escape he ventures to America and finds a new destiny with Claire only to lose her to a time not yet come. But is all hope really lost when love is your greatest ally? This is a question that will be answered in Follow Me.
Follow Me is a passionate story of love that transcends time which is found, lost, and found again. A brilliant concept, the relationships in the past and the present occur simultaneously, giving us a glimpse into what can be if only we believe. Claire is haunted by her one night affair with a perfect man and cannot accept her new life until she puts it behind her. Kate is a vivacious young woman determined to make her own place in the world no matter what it takes. Harcourt is the man who has loved them both. How these two stories entwine to bring us a fascinating love story is incredible to experience.
The only thing I didn't like about this book was the lack of warning in transitions between stories and time periods. There are jumps between three or four different times quite suddenly that can really confuse readers if they aren't paying close attention. However once I got used to the format I was sucked in and couldn't stop reading.

Follow Me: In love with the past........2006-08-14
Overall I thought this was a pretty good book. At first I had a hard time of really getting into because of my dislike of Claire's boyfriend, Ian. I really could not stand how he always had to throw little comments at her to belittle her for every little thing she did.
Anyway, after I got past that the book was pretty good. There was a lot of bouncing around from the present to the 1800's but it was pretty easy to follow.
It's a story about a girl, Claire who is haunted by her past. She had an incredible night of passion with a man who she felt was the love of her life. This man was a person she could only assume as a ghost. This book is about her trying to get on with her life with her boyfriend and forget about the man who she felt that she's always known.
It's not the best book I've ever read, but it was pretty good.
Best Book EVER!.......2005-07-12
This is by far the best book I've ever read, if you don't read this book you'll be reading nothing. You don't even have to read it just buy it!
Intriguing Plot - Haunting Love Story.......2005-05-13
When you read the back cover of this debut novel by Mary Beth Bass I am sure you will be as intrigued with the plot as I was. A young successful woman has a boyfriend who is a handsome, well to do doctor who seemingly adores her, yet she can't seem to forget, and is haunted, by an episode of a wild night of sex that occurred seven years before with a dream lover she can only believe is a ghost? Wow, now this seemed like a truly intriguing novel - what a concept! Even though the author switched back and forth from modern day to the year 1824 quite rapidly, the story was intriguing enough to hold my interest.
Claire Islington was trying to get on with her life, but memories of the passion and the subsequent feelings of familiarity of that one memorable night haunted her. Her boyfriend, Ian, who I soon came to dislike intensely for his controlling maneuvers, pushed and prodded Claire for a commitment that she `felt' she should take, even though she could not shake the memory of her nineteenth century lover. Living in the modern day, coincidences with things, and events of the past all seemed to keep Claire off balance and searching for something very elusive, though she always felt was there.
It is also the story of a most intelligent woman, Kate Ishingham, trained in the very unladylike, for that era, profession as a physician. Not only did she want to practice medicine but she was also a brilliant researcher who was on the cusp of finding a cure for prevalent nineteenth century disease.
Harcourt Abernathy was in love with, found, and then lost Kate - the woman of his dreams, the pulse that beat his heart, the elusive transient love that haunted him and then with the help of a `friend' he found again, in Claire.
*** This was a complicated tale with a story within a story and the author switches back and forth giving the background of a hauntingly beautiful tale of two people destined as `soul mates' but didn't quite manage to have the life together that should have been theirs. Oftentimes, I found it a bit tough to follow by the rapid story switching and a slower read as well as I reread passages trying to fit the pieces together, but regardless, the writing and the sensual quality of the story was superb. As the two stories run parallel to one another, you are introduced to a plethora of intriguing characters from both eras and the clever twist that delivers a heart-wrenching and beautiful ending proving once and for all, that `love is enough.' --- Marilyn, for www.romancedesigns.com ---
Follow Me.......2005-05-11
Visions of a past she never lived haunt Claire. In her dreams, she is Kate, a woman doctor in a time when such a thing was unheard of and in love with Harcourt Abernathy, a heartstoppingly handsome man whose memory infiltrates her entire waking life. Compared to him, Ian, her controlling, obsessive compulsive, angty would be fiance' is a pale shadow, and frankly annoying. Yet, as Ian watches Claire slip into a dream world, he is terrified and reacts badly. Meanwhile, in the past, events move towards an inevitable parting of the two lovers by death. To retain the love of his life, Harcourt will be forced into a desperate move that could kill the woman he loves in both worlds.
*** Though a haunting tale, the frequents shifts from past to present make for a confusing story that could easily lose the reader. Claire and Harcourt's story is compelling, but a more coherent tale would be appreciated. ***
Amanda Killgore.
