A great help but use it wisely.......2007-08-01
Doreen has never been a confident public speaker but last summer she was faced with the daunting challenge of delivering a speech in a local debate. 'This house believes that prostitution should be legalised' was never going to be an easy motion to put to a Christian faith-group. Apparently she surmised that the only chance to get the audience on her side would be through the use of humour. Not a bad idea, I'll warrant, but Doreen (physical characteristics aside) has never been a particularly funny woman. I bought this excellent guidebook to help out but sadly I think she failed to exploit its full potential. If she had even glanced over the explanations of word-play, misdirection and irony then it certainly didn't come across. Rather, I believe that she followed in the footsteps of Roy 'Chubby' Brown and confined her research to one particular facet of comedy.
Well, I don't think even Doreen had intended on turning the air quite so blue, but the warm-up gin and tonics went far beyond being a 'calming influence'. I fear that she was egged-on even further by vocal support from the elderly Mrs. Dewhurst. These isolated plaudits were probably not the best way to gauge the sentiment of the room, if one considers that Mrs Dewhurst tends to punctuate even the most leisurely of Sunday sermons with equally raucous cheers. Needless to say, the speech was not met with universal acclaim. Still, technically the debate can't be chalked up as a loss. The melee that broke out (after a gag that would have made Ron Jeremy blush) ended any chances of a civil vote being held.

...then you should own this book.
The Comic Toolbox reveals the method to the madness of humor. And you'll find immediate applications to anything you create; verbally, visually or in print.
Excellent book for story tellers.......2007-04-26
Breaks down all the elements of not just a comedy story, but for any story. Makes it easy to come up with an interesting dynamic between characters and the plot.
If you are looking for something to help you be funny with friends, or to tell jokes, the concepts can still be applied, but you'd have to keep your friends there long enough for you to build up a funny story.
Worth the money
Highly Recommended.......2006-08-09
As a professional screenwriter and teacher of screenwriting, I can testify that this book offers loads of invaluable advice and wisdom about writing comedy. But as an added bonus, it will help you write almost any kind of screenplay. A treasured addition to my shelf of how-to books.
Real tools to build funny.......2006-05-31
Finally, a book that offers real tools and exercises to help you write humor. After you get the basics, John Vorhaus helps you understand what makes it funny and what slows it down and shows you how to get the laugh instead of just head nods because they reaize you are ironic. I highly reccomend this book for anyone looking to write humor on demand. I would love to see John write a book focused on the Comic Strip and similar short form humor.
Book Description
Jargon-spewing corporate zombies. The sociopath who checks voice mail on his speaker phone. The fascist information systems guy. The sadistic human resources director. The technophobic vice president. The power-mad executive assistant. The pursed-lip sycophant. The big stubborn dumb guy. They're Dilbert's coworkers, and chances are they're yours, too. If you know them, work with them, or dialogue with them about leveraging synergies to maximize shareholder value, then you'll recognize this comic strip as a day at the office, only funnier. Since 1989 Dilbert has lampooned not only the people but also the accepted conventions and practices of the business world. Office politics, management trends, business travel, personnel policies, corporate bureaucracy, irrational strategies, unfathomable accounting practices, unproductive meetings, dysfunctional organizations, oppressive work spaces, silly protocols, and inscrutable jargon are all targets of Adams's darkly goofy satirical pen. Dilbert strikes a deeply resonant chord with fans because it casts such a dead-on reflection of the realities of the white-collar workplace, even with its off-the-wall delivery. Today, Dilbert runs in 2,000 newspapers in 19 languages, reaching 150 million readers in 65 countries. The 24th Dilbert collection, Author's Cut, features Adams's personal all-time favorite selections, along with his own handwritten commentary about the strips.

A Fantastic Book of Comedy.......2007-04-02
I received my Dilbert Treasury and it is even better than I imagined. Not only is it full of some of Scott Adams' best Dilbert cartoons, it also has his own personal comments after each one! Some of his comments are even funnier than the cartoon above it! :-)
I keep mine on my coffee table and people just love to browse through it. It was on sale and I feel an excellent value for the price!
Love it!!!
Good book, but not as insightful as I would have hoped..........2007-03-12
The comics are a good collection of Scott Adams' work over the years. While he has has added some interesting commentary, "as if [he] were looking over [your] shoulder", it seems like it could be more insightful. Some of the comments such as, "Monkey-related punchlines always work," seem a bit lacking, while, comments such as "all success depends on faulty comparisons," reveal some thematic insight into the author's vision of the strip. As a long-time fan of Adams' work, I recommend this, as it is a solid collection, and captures a bit of Adams "behind the scenes" thinking behind his strips.
Journeying Dilbert's world with Scott Adams.......2007-02-03
This book is amazing. I would probably say that of most of Dilbert books, but what I truly appreciate about this strip treasury is the careful selection made by the Author and also the handwritten commments below every stip. Thanks to these add-on you can get much more of the behind the scenes on how the humour of the characters is conceived and on how to draw and compose comics. For me this is an interesting added value while maybe someone just prefer to enjoy the comic stand-alone. I would reccomend buying it mainly if you are already a Dilbert fan although it can be a very insightful introduction to newcomers of Dilbert's world
Laugh out loud Funny.......2006-05-31
This book had me LAUGHING OUT LOUD on the airplane - I am sure everyone was jealous that i was having such a great time with JUST me & my book -- it is VERY funny. Only read this book in public if you won't mind people looking at you because you are laughing so hard!
It is funny, even though he explains it.......2006-02-21
I bought this book anticipating nothing more than a rehash of "Seven Years of Highly Defective People". Instead, however, Adams starts right where "Seven Years" left off, in terms of the comic timeline. The book is very much like "Seven Years" in that Adams provides funny handwritten comments under almost every comic, but unlike "Seven Years", the book is organized chronologically, and not by character. That said, the book is very funny and very enjoyable to those people (like me) who like a bit of a "behind-the-scenes tour" now and then.

Humor works...imagine that!.......2003-12-13
This book is an absolutely wonderful resource for teachers who feel they might be at the end of their chain or are simply looking for a way of revitalizing their classroom. The ideas are hysterical, practical, and easy to implement in most cases. Just reading the book can make you laugh and get you ready to brighten up your classroom with laughter. We all deserve a little laughter in our day, students and teachers alike - this book is highly recommended! :)
Excellent teacher resource!.......2000-04-20
"If they're Laughing..." was a great read for two main reasons. Firstly, in today's classrooms sometimes there is not a lot to laugh about. This book allows the teacher to find ways to laugh with the students everyday. I believe that students that laugh and enjoy school will work hard to get to school everyday. Secondly, even if you don't use these ideas in class, there are lots of funny stories and anecdotes. I was chuckling to myself as I was reading and relaxing (this is definitely not a typical textbook / teacher guide read). If you are looking to add some fun and humour to your classroom, "If They're Laughing..." is a MUST! END
Book Description
If you think you know what's the worst than can happen while traveling, the essayists in Not So Funny When it Happened will set you straight. In over 30 scathingly funny pieces, a diverse array of authors shows just how quickly a pleasant vacation can turn into an embarrassing anecdote. In Vietnam, John Wood invents increasingly elaborate fictions to explain his ex-wife's "accidental death" in order to avoid humiliating himself by admitting he's divorced. Australian traveler Jayce White awakens in Zimbabwe to a baboon at his breakfast table helping himself to leftovers with primal flair. Collected in Not So Funny When it Happened, these stories and more show that when traveling, even the best of plans fall by the wayside.

Not So Great, But..........2007-04-10
The content was too fragmented and uneven; it should have "flowed" a bit better. I felt as a reader (and writer), I was being jerked from one story to another. Some did make me laugh, however.
Made me laugh..........2007-02-24
My husband and I have done some traveling and, with our upcoming move to Europe, plan on doing a lot more so this book caught my eye. I've never read any travel humor books but I really liked this one. Most of the stories were at least funny, if not hilarious, and a few of them I finished and never looked back. Several people have mentioned that some of these stories are found in other books so I'm sure I'll come across them again since this book has me hooked on travel humor.
Either travel fans or those who enjoy humor will love this 'best of' travel writing collection.......2006-12-12
Many of the best travel stories have their origins in mishaps, and here to offer up a satisfying dish of events is Not So Funny When It Happened, a survey of the best tales from travelers around the world. These come from Dave Barry, Bill Bryson, Anne Lamott and others: familiar authors whose funny encounters are not to be missed. Either travel fans or those who enjoy humor will love this 'best of' travel writing collection which takes an unusual approach to the normally-serious topic of travel experiences. Highly recommended.

Yes, it's funny and has a good selection of authors, but..........2006-12-12
How much travel humor have you read? How many works have you read by the authors included in this book? If you answered "a lot" to either of these questions, chances are that more than a couple of these stories will look familiar to you, as they are exerpts from previous publications rather than essays written specifically for this book. For example, the bit by David Sedaris is taken from "Me Talk Pretty One Day," and the Bill Bryson selection is taken from one of his books on America (either "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" or "The Lost Continent," unfortunately my memory fails me.) This is a great place to start for people who haven't read much travel humor. Since it does contain some fresh material, I would also recommend it to well-read fans of travel humor, but would also suggest buying it used rather than paying full price.
Now, on to the actual quality of the content- this book shows once again that good travel writing doesn't always have to come from some crazy adventure, and that simply having a good narrative style can make any situation interesting. Examples of standard situations turned into good stories include: a middle aged woman pondering the local young, pretty girls' reactions to her appearance in her bathing suit (a.k.a. "butthink"), overcoming cultural differences in Vietnam by claiming that a perfectly healthy ex-wife is dead. Of course, there are also stories of the bizarre- like taking a frog on a cross country train and ending up in the new-age alien spotting capital of the USA, where the frog is "saved by aliens" after jumping from a cliff...
Not So Funny When I Read It.......2005-08-16
... still, I did finish it, which is saying something. I found the first few stories unimpressive, but they seemed to get better as the book progressed. I thought that "The King of the Ferret-Leggers" by Donald Katz was utterly hilarious and quite worth reading the whole book for.

HA-HA.......2007-10-12
I don't think I read a single page of this book that didn't make me burst out laughing. Some of the material aims a tad low, but a lot is fairly cerebral, too. And it's high time someone did a send up of cloying self help books.
I think the book could've been a bit longer; I wanted to keep laughing. And I was disappointed they didn't satirize any of Dr. Laura's books. But, this thing was FUNNY. This is one of the best parodies around. It's "Spinal Tap funny."
Funny.......2007-09-24
Admit it... you read all those popular so-called self-help books and put their advices, exercises, recommendations, suggestions, plans, ideas, mantras, meditations, visualizations, affirmations, prayers to work only to find that none of that silliness works, and then you turned to this book and had a NECESSARY GOOD OL' LAUGH!... I admit it.
Absolutley Awful! .......2007-09-13
I really give this book NO stars.
This was the dumbest book I have ever read. By reading the reviews of this book before I bought it-it sounded like it would be really funny. It is soooo disappointing, I couldn't finish reading it. Wish I could return it! It's going right into the charity box.
VERY FUNNY.......2007-09-03
There was a lot to like about this book beginning with the concept. A book that rakes self help books over the proverbial coals is a premise you'd think would have been done long ago.
With that concept, the laughs come easy. As an occasional reader of Tony Robbins I found the chapter mocking his "The Giant Within" ("The Behemoth Within") to be hysterical, and the funniest thing I've read in a while. (In the chapter sending up the book, "Tony Robbins" is a giant of a man who lives in a run down tiny apartment so small he has to sleep with his feet extending into the apartment building corridor.) I also liked the scathing send ups of "The Rules" "Who Moved My Cheese", and "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" the latter a sanctimonious, patronizing financial advice book that was ripe for parody. The book correctly portrays self improvement authors as a group of vain men & women who love to put phony "Dr" credentials in front of their name and refer to themselves in first person.
I also loved the parodies of those little "positive affirmations" books with their piffy little positive thought balloons. Also the brilliant, hard hitting mockery of "Maybe He's Just Not That Into You" when all a guy has to do is sneeze for the authors to shout "dump that loser" had me laughing.
The reviews for this book are all over the map, proving how subjective comedy is. But if you're a halfway well read person who has a basic understanding of what a self improvement book is, you will LOVE this book. Also if you're a fan of satire, specifically movies like "Spinal Tap", and "Best of Show" you will love this book.
My only complaint is that some of the diagrams were a little bland. But the text sparkles.
Maybe Life's Just Not That Into You: When You feel Like the World's Voted You Off.......2007-09-02
Read lots of reviews before buying this. Cannot believe anyone would think this is a self help book or even a spoof on a self help book. The best thing about this book is the title. If you like real inane humor then this book is for you. Comparing it to the humor of Woody Allen or Gary Larsen is like comparing the Ritz Carlton to Days Inn. The humor is so corny that it brought back memories of the Three Stooges. If anyone wants this book I'd be glad to send it to them free just to get rid of it.

A bad hairday like no other!
In the middle of winter, in a tucked-away town,
Where the snow never seemed to stop coming down,
In a mountain-sized house, the color of sky,
Lived a girl with thick hair that took too long to dry.
So begins this delightfully irreverent tale, written in the tradition of Dr. Seuss. When a spirited little girl named Ruthie Bon Bair refuses to dry her wet hair before bedtime, she is plagued by an unusual host of difficultiesplants and flowers and other outrageous items begin to sprout from her scalp! As her condition escalates, Ruthie and friends attempt to control the growing vegetation in her hair, but not without some surprising, and hilarious, results. . . .

I read this to my daughter's kindergarten class and it had them rolling with laughter!!
Sure to become a favorite!.......2006-11-21
This is an absolutely WONDERFUL book! I always tell my kids that all of our actions have consequences. This fun book written in whimsical rhyme teaches that lesson in a clever way. It might even get your child to listen to whatever it is you may be nagging them about! It is very rare these days to find a book that is truly enjoyable to both kids and adults alike. This is one of those books, sure to be a hit with the kids and one that you won't mind reading to them over and over again! I especially like the surprise ending. It catches the kids off guard and gives them even more to laugh about. I look forward to the next book from this newly discovered, wonderful author! If you haven't read the book, go out and buy it...you won't regret it!
There's nothing worse than a "bad hair" day!.......2006-10-01
I absolutely fell in love with this book. Even as an adult, I found myself relating to the imagery that was brought forth through the rhyming and illustrations. It's written and provides a message in such a way that both children and adults will find themselves identifying and chuckling throughout. What a talented author!

Jump into pretending.......2004-05-27
This book is great for teachers, parents, grandparents and others who enjoy seeing kids learn a new skill. Reader's theater allows them to jump into interpreting a script with a minimum of "baggage." They don't need props or a stage; they just read their parts and learn to become someone else. The author suggests making copies of a script for groups, so it becomes a great activity book for a get together of kids. The kids in the book are naughty and nice, thoughtful and not. The young readers learn about human nature, conflict resolution, and how to cope with parents, while having fun pretending. Great fun!
Slice of Life with a Twist.......2004-05-27
This book features abundant humor that naturally appeals to kids, yet tickles adults, too. The plays are suitable for simply reading aloud or full dramatic performances and are "just right" in length - long enough to be make a point and brief enough to capture attention. I'd recommend this book for a variety of settings, including classroom, home, and youth groups. Kids will love it!
Kids love this book of plays.......2004-05-27
I bought this book for my daughter's fourth grade class, and her teacher had them perform several of the readers' theatre plays. The students had great fun, enjoyed the humor, and learned several lessons about dealing with not-so-fun situations. Diana Jenkins is a master when it comes to writing about and relating to kids. I highly recommend this title for teachers and parents who want to make reading/acting fun for upper-elementary/middle school students.
Book Description
That stammer. Those basset-hound eyes. That bone-dry wit. There has never been another comedian like Bob Newhart. His comedy albums, movies, and two hit television series have made him a national treasure and placed him firmly in the pantheon of comedy legends. Who else has a drinking game named after him? And now, at last, Newhart puts his brilliant and hysterical world view on paper. Never a punch-line comic, always more of a storyteller, he tells anecdotes from throughout his life and career, including his beginnings as an accountant and the groundbreaking success of his comedy albums and The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, which gave him fifteen years on primetime television. And he also gives his wry, comedic twist to a multitude of topics, including golf, drinking, and family holidays. Today, Newhart appears on Desperate Housewives, in hit movies such as Elf, and in theaters around the country. Reruns of his shows air constantly on Nick at Nite -- have recently been released with great success for the first time ever on DVD. With this book, Bob Newhart gives his millions of fans a first ever opportunity to sample his unique brand of humor -- including excerpts from some of his classic routines -- on the printed page.

entertaining book.......2007-09-25
A quick read. Very entertaining. I had listened to the CD and wanted to read it. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Very funny read.......2007-09-23
This was a very funny read from Bob Newhart. He tells the story of his
life in short interludes which put together a picture of a man at peace with himself and the world. His humor has always made me laugh, some-
times loudly and this book did the same thing.
I shouldn't Even be Doing This.......2007-09-19
Not a rib splitter. But a good, relaxing read. Lots of fun stories about Newhart and his celebrety friends. If you like Newhart's sense of humor, you will like this book.
Okay read.......2007-07-05
I didn't read the ad carefully when I purchased this product. Even though we thought it was an album of Bob Newhart's comedy routines we enjoyed listening to the book. It was a 3 CD book and we enjoyed alternating this book with the other audiobooks we had purchased.
Disappointed.......2007-06-22
I like Bob Newhart, but this book was not as good as I was hoping for. It was not a quick read.
