5 out of 5 stars Principles of Marketing by Philip Kotler and Gary Armstrong.......2005-08-05

I have used Principles of Marketing by Philip Kotler in my university days of the 1980s when I was learning the basics of marketing. It is gratifying to note that my favourite marketing reference book has been kept up to date. The latest international edition, the 11th edition (2005) is really the top quality book that one would expert of Kotler and his colleague.

"Principles of Marketing" is an excellent textbook on the current marketing trends. It is an enjoyable and practical book. After reading the book, one will really understand that marketing is all about understanding the customer needs and finding solutions that delight the customer. The reader will come to appreciate that marketing is a philosophy of doing business for those organisations that are going to thrive in the current highly competitive global markets.

This delightful book should be very useful for both newcomers to marketing and for those like me who studied marketing years ago and are at the risk of being left behind by the current marketing trends that exploit the vast opportunities presented by the internet.

Great marketing book, even if I didn't have to read it for my class I would have felt that I missed out by not at least skimming it through. Very intriguing and interesting examples of the choices that we make every day and how manufacturers choose which decisions we make to target how things are advertised. I usually hate text books, but this one is a keeper.

1 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2006-06-19

I have been teaching second year university business students (4-year program) and for the past three semesters have been using this book (7the edition international). Hopefully, this will change soon. Although the examples are interesting and the illustrations are understandable, I found that it was very unhelpful of the text to keep writing things like "products and services" when I had just finsihed explaining that services are actually a type of product. Another similiar example was the use of "marketing and advertising".
The lax use of terminology in a text which is supposed to be an introduction to the subject was surprising. After all, this is where they are supposed to learn the basics on which to build, and use of the correct terms is vital.

4 out of 5 stars Relatively good textbook.......2005-12-18

Kotler and Armstrong always produce lucid, succinct books on Marketing and Marketing Management. As a lecturer in the Business/Management area, I use these books in the course of my work.
The content is good, with a lot of diagrams and flow charts, and the case studies are many, which isn't a bad thing, as it puts some of the principles into a realistic context.

As for being boring- well, it's a text book!!! I'm sure there will be an 'Idiot's Guide to Marketing' out soon, which may satisfy the more facile of readers.

Book Description

The thoroughly revised Sixth Edition of Feigenbaum's Echocardiography reflects recent changes in the technology and clinical use of echocardiography. Included are detailed discussions of tissue Doppler imaging, harmonic imaging and its impact on tissue and contrast visualization, new applications of myocardial perfusion and three-dimensional echocardiography. Emphasizing the clinical importance of various echocardiography applications, this edition has chapters on systolic and diastolic left ventricular function, infective endocarditis, prosthetic valves, contrast echocardiography, stress echocardiography, systemic diseases, and operative and perioperative echocardiography. More than 1,200 illustrations complement the text. An accompanying DVD-ROM contains more than 900 moving cine loops with corresponding still images from the book.

Excellent, clinically oriented book. The video DVD alone is worth more than the cost of the text and is fantastic. The text is very clinically relevant and is not as academic or mathmatecial as Otto's books.

5 out of 5 stars echocardiography at its finest.......2005-07-09

As a student echocardiographer learning the pathology of cardiovascular diseases, I have both this edition and one earlier. This is well worth the upgrade in price. It has 1 second loops of most of the many possible pathologies found in echocardiographic studies. Though I have looked at the clips several times, installation was initially a short-lived problem. This new edition is a complete overhaul as described by Feigenbaum. He admits that he is not the sole author but Armstrong and Ryan are the primarys on this edition. This book's attention to clinical detail makes it a must in my book when considering Echo books. Having a resource to give you a moving example of cardio pathology can only enhance one's understanding.

4 out of 5 stars Great echo book but..........2005-01-22

When I was a young man, I read the last edition of this book and I fell in love with Cardiology. Every word in the last edition was memorized, just like a love letter. Now I am an old man, and I was delighted to see a new edition of this book finally published. I spent one weekend digesting every word. While I found the book highly delightful to read, I am finding factual errors in the book, to my disappointment. For example, in chapter 6, page 172, figure 6.51, deceleration time of mitral inflow was drawn incorrectly (it should start from the peak of the E wave, not from the beginning of the E). Then in chapter 16, page 513, the book stated that in dobutamine echo, a hypokinetic area that exhibits "sustained improvement" rather than "bipashic response" should be read as non-viable. But in echo literature (Heart. 2001 Dec;86(6):672-8 and Am J Cardiol. 1999 Jul 15;84(2):130-4), "sustained improvement" is considered viable.

The book is great for beginner and intermediate level user. I still love my Feigenbaum, but I found a new love: Catherine Otto's $300 thick book (Principle of Clinical Echocardiography).

5 out of 5 stars a towering text on adult echocardiography.......2002-11-03

this is a comprehensive text aimed at the cardiologist. all aspects of echo is covered. initial portion of book is devoted to man and machine. successive chapters cover various diseases like vulvular, ischaemic, cardiomyopathy etc in detail. easier to understand concise forms are found in harrison's textbook of medicine and in braunwald diseases of heart. the book has a large number of pictures and doppler tracings. hemodynamics are covered in length , although pisa is not. new edition is eagerly awaited.

Armstrong, a British journalist and former nun, guides us along one of the most elusive and fascinating quests of all time--the search for God. Like all beloved historians, Armstrong entertains us with deft storytelling, astounding research, and makes us feel a greater appreciation for the present because we better understand our past. Be warned: A History of God is not a tidy linear history. Rather, we learn that the definition of God is constantly being repeated, altered, discarded, and resurrected through the ages, responding to its followers' practical concerns rather than to mystical mandates. Armstrong also shows us how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have overlapped and influenced one another, gently challenging the secularist history of each of these religions. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Over 700,000 copies of the original hardcover and paperback editions of this stunningly popular book have been sold. Karen Armstrong's superbly readable exploration of how the three dominant monotheistic religions of the world—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—have shaped and altered the conception of God is a tour de force. One of Britain's foremost commentators on religious affairs, Armstrong traces the history of how men and women have perceived and experienced God, from the time of Abraham to the present. From classical philosophy and medieval mysticism to the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the modern age of skepticism, Armstrong performs the near miracle of distilling the intellectual history of monotheism into one compelling volume.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightenment.......2007-10-13

This is a brilliant, well written history of belief systems, that have influenced my life. It enabled me to understand the roots of beliefs and customs that I have unknowingly and automatically engaged without an understanding of their origins.

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-07

Karen Armstrong was, at one time, a Roman Catholic nun. She left the nunnery behind in 1969 but not her search for God. This is a good book.
Her book deals primarily with God in the Judeo-Christian theologies; Judaism, Christianity and Islam. She gives a good criticism and analysis from atheism to mysticism. She goes through each of the religions and the evolution of their thought. I suppose that the word "evolution" would not be proper because there is no actual progression of thought culminating in a final conclusion. It is a comparative analysis, exploring all the tangential pathways engaged in by all three of the theologies. The point is made that all three theologies have shared all of the various pathways in seeking a God. Each group has had its radicals, its rationales, its fundamentalists and it mystics.
I enjoyed Karen's book but Karen's notion that the impossible could become more acceptable if it is blanketed in the mystically paradoxical is not an answer that I can accept, but it is more than possible that mankind, in general, could find it temporarily sustainable. I feel that this would only bring the human race out of the frying pan and into the fire. Fundamentalism is certainly a step backward, but mysticism is no step forward.
I personally feel that in her quest for God she has one final step to take, but is afraid to take it for the fear of that "pit of despair and hopelessness" that she mentioned in her book. Kierkegard had a similar problem. He chose to "leap into the absurd".

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-23

In this book, Karen Armstrong voices several great perspectives on religion. She began as a student of the church herself, working towards becoming a nun, and later decides to investigate things further. I think it's a great book for anyone who is either interested in learning more about religion, or has already adopted strong convictions. Everyone can learn the meaning and importance of what religion can mean to an individual, and in a well-written and eloquent manner. I recommend everyone read this book.

3 out of 5 stars Part Fascinating, Part Dense.......2007-07-24

I found this book to be fascinating in parts and really dense in others. I am rating it somewhat low because, while I really enjoyed the ideas, I found the writing style to be very heavy in places and I am holding unto my stars for a more enjoyable read on the topic. The first three chapters were by far my favorite. They deal with the history behind the Old and New Testaments. The middle chapters deal with the evolution of Christian/Muslim/Jewish theology and were like trudging through mud for me. The last two chapters were again enjoyable for me and they deal with the history of atheism and a discussion on the future of God.

Armstrong's notion of "God" is somewhat foreign to me (it makes me think of Buddhism more than the Judeo-Christian God). She certainly does not appear to be a fan of anthropomorphic interpretations of God, but I have a difficult time discerning the role of any kind of organized religion if God is reduced to her mystical nothingness (perhaps she does not envision a role). I also am not sure how relevant it is to even call such a notion "God" after two millennia of anthropomorphic deities. At any rate, I very much enjoyed the historical aspects of this book and I would recommend it for those who are interested in the history of Christianity/Islam/Judaism from inception to now and are not afraid of some rather dense chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Elegantly Comprehensive and Grippingly Readable.......2007-05-16

For anyone who has ever wondered why some people believe with extreme fervor in the supernatural for which there has never been a single shred of credible evidence, Karen Armstrong's magnum opus is a must read. A refugee from a Catholic convent, Ms Armstrong proved to be a bona fide intellectual whose scholarship is impeccable.

Her book begins with the yearnings of ignorant, superstitious ancient peoples for a means of explaining the then unexplainable. It goes on to show how such ancient myths evolved into the religions we know today.

Armstrong explains how the ancient nomadic Israelites rationalized their conquest of Canaan with the myths they were God's chosen people and he had promised the land of Canaan to them. In addition to taking the Canaanite's land, the Israelites also co-opted the chief God of their territorial pantheon, El, as their own and renamed Him Jehovah. "Emanuel" literally translates "El with us," not generically "God with us."

Armstrong goes on to delineate how Christianity was originally invented by Paul and others and how it has been repeatedly reinvented over the centuries, always holding out the seductive hope of "salvation" to those willing to accept the mythologies on blind faith that salvation is not only possible but also that there is somehow a need for it.

And she explains how Islam arose from Mohammed's vision, much as the Church of Latter Day Saints arose from Joseph Smith's vision and Christian Science from Mary Baker Eddy's.

Armstrong's book does not debunk religion, but it provides a comfortable understanding of the cosmos for anyone who finds religion obsolete in light of knowledge that has emerged since someone wrote Genesis.

There is a lengthy discussion, over many chapters, of putting together a marketing strategy. Given space constraints, the issues are well treated. The treatment of pricing strategies may not be as in-depth as one in a text on finance or accounting. But there is enough detail here to be understandable and useful if your background is marketing.

Unsurprisingly, he gives a good discussion of marketing on a global scale.

Over all, Discussion is too lengthy but authors are good and their approach is reasonable as well. Authors approach situation to convince readers with appropriate theory and examples.

- Good book but it requires lot of patience to go through it.

4 out of 5 stars Covers a lot of ground.......2004-08-04

A timely update of Kotler's long running and successful book.

There is a lengthy discussion, over many chapters, of putting together a marketing strategy. Given space constraints, the issues are well treated. The treatment of pricing strategies may not be as indepth as one in a text on finance or accounting. But there is enough detail here to be understandable and useful if your background is marketing.

Unsurprisingly, he gives a good discussion of marketing on a global scale. Increasingly cheaper communications costs, especially of course email and browsers, makes a global campaign affordable, even for mid range companies.

With the huge US corporate scandals of 2002 and ongoing (Adelphia, Enron, WorldCom...), Kotler provides topical advice on social responsibility of a corporation, and of the importance of marketing ethics.

People around the world have found inspiration in the story of Lance Armstrong--a world-class athlete nearly struck down by cancer, only to recover and win the Tour de France, the multiday bicycle race famous for its grueling intensity. Armstrong is a thoroughgoing Texan jock, and the changes brought to his life by his illness are startling and powerful, but he's just not interested in wearing a hero suit. While his vocabulary is a bit on the he-man side (highest compliment to his wife: "she's a stud"), his actions will melt the most hard-bitten souls: a cancer foundation and benefit bike ride, his astonishing commitment to training that got him past countless hurdles, loyalty to the people and corporations that never gave up on him. There's serious medical detail here, which may not be for the faint of heart; from chemo to surgical procedures to his wife's in vitro fertilization, you won't be spared a single x-ray, IV drip, or unfortunate side effect. Athletes and coaches everywhere will benefit from the same extraordinary detail provided about his training sessions--every aching tendon, every rainy afternoon, and every small triumph during his long recovery is here in living color. It's Not About the Bike is the perfect title for this book about life, death, illness, family, setbacks, and triumphs, but not especially about the bike. --Jill Lightner

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE BIKE gives you a wonderful, inside view of Lance Armstrong. A great read. But only half the story...

Don't miss out on the "outer view," Lance through the eyes of a good reporter. LANCE ARMSTRONG'S WAR: ONE MAN'S BATTLE AGAINST FATE, FAME, LOVE, DEATH, SCANDAL, AND A FEW OTHER RIVALS ON THE ROAD TO THE TOUR DE FRANCE by Daniel Coyle is simply marvelous.

The two books belong together.

4 out of 5 stars Good at the beginning....but it IS about the bike........2007-09-17

I was eager to read this book, I saw Lance on several t.v. shows, his battle with cancer interested me because my mom also had cancer at an early age (29), so I bought the book with the hope of learning what made him strong, wondering: how can he inspire others? Well, the first half was pretty good, I was amazed at how much the cancer took over his body and the grueling recovery. I was in awe of Kik and how she stood by him, along thinking he was a humble, family man. I was wrong. The latter part of the book indeed was "all about the bike" going on and on about all the prep for the upcoming races, the TDF (the biggest, most prestigous bike race), the move to Europe (for the bike) and all the proper cycling terms...ho hum. I almost left that part unread, but I hate doing that, so I trudged on. I was sad to find out later after having read the book, that he no longer was with Kik and his children, but doing just spendidly peddling away and loving his singlehood.
I think in writing this book I only learned that for Lance it IS about the bike (and himself). He seems cold, egotistical and unappreciative of those who sacrificed for him. Is that what it takes to get to the top??

5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2007-09-16

This book has been one of the most inspirational books that I have ever read. Now whenever I'm at the gym I just say to myself, come on mike if Lance can do it so can you. I raced bicycles myself when I was younger and after breaking my collarbone at sixteen years old I thought biking was over for me; If only I realized at that age a broken bone was nothing compared to Lance. Thank you Lance Armstrong.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2007-08-31

This book is an inspiration. It shows the hardships of battling cancer and the effort of recovery. Lance Armstrong is one of the most driven individuals I've ever read about; I could not put it down. Recommended for anyone and everyone, MUST READ!!!

Book Description

In her acclaimed Women of the Otherworld series, bestselling author Kelley Armstrong creates a present day in which humans unwittingly coexist with werewolves, witches, and other supernatural beings. Now, in this spellbinding new novel, a beautiful necromancer who can see ghosts must come to terms with her power—and with an evil she never thought possible.

NO HUMANS INVOLVED
It’s the most anticipated reality television event of the season: three spiritualists gathered together in one house to raise the ghost of Marilyn Monroe. For celebrity medium Jaime Vegas, it is to be her swan song—one last publicity blast for a celebrity on the wrong side of forty. But unlike her colleagues, who are more show than substance, Jaime is the real thing.

Reluctant to upstage her fellow spiritualists, Jaime tries to suppress her talents, as she has done her entire life. But there is something lurking in the maze of gardens behind the house: a spirit without a voice. And it won’t let go until somehow Jaime hears its terrible story. For the first time in her life, Jaime Vegas understands what humans mean when they say they are haunted. Distraught, Jaime looks to fellow supernatural Jeremy Danvers for help.

As the touches and whispers from the garden grow more frantic, Jaime and Jeremy embark on an investigation into a Los Angeles underworld of black magic and ritual sacrifice. When events culminate in a psychic showdown, Jaime must use the darkest power she has to defeat a shocking enemy—one whose malicious force comes from the last realm she expected. . . .

In a world whose surface resembles our own, Kelley Armstrong delivers a stunning alternate reality, one where beings of the imagination live, love, and fight a never-ending battle between good and evil.

4 out of 5 stars Four and a Half Stars.......2007-10-10

Jaime Vegas (necromancer) hopes taking part in a television programme which intends to raise the ghost of Marilyn Monroe will lead to her being offered a show of her own. However, before that can happen she finds out the gardens of the house she is staying in hold a far nastier secret. Jaime calls on her fellow supernaturals for help - Jeremy Danvers the alpha werewolf and Eve Levine her contact on the other side. It quickly becomes apparent that something evil is at work and Jaime may need to push herself and her powers farther than she's dared to before.

I freely admit I am a huge Kelley Armstrong fan and this book doesn't disappoint. Jaime is perhaps one of my favourite characters, maybe because with her insecurities she is the most human of the supernaturals we have met in the Otherworld.

Her relationship with Jeremy is touching and believable and takes a big step forward here. He, the alpha werewolf who gives no outward signs of his feelings and Jaime who almost seems to overflow with emotion at times. I have been looking forward to them appearing in a book together ever since it became apparent how she felt about him and I think the relationship works beautifully.

Kelley Armstrong's characters are always a delight to read, every one an individual with their own motivations, quirks, fears and desires. As a bonus they also talk like real people - not just like characters in a book. (My favourite one-liner being Eve's sock puppet reference towards the end of the story.) We also get a sneak peek at how Marsten and Hope's relationship has been developing, which makes me look forward even more to the next book.

Some readers may question the presence of Lucas and Paige as they do seem slightly superfluous to the storyline. However, Savannah is necessary to the plot and without her adoptive parents it would be harder to explain why she suddenly appeared. So I can understand why they are included, though they don't appear to contribute much to the story.

If you've not read the previous six books this is a pretty accessible entry in the series. Though there are references to characters and events from previous books the main plotline is pretty much standalone. Bitten remains my favourite Otherworld book, but No Humans Involved definitely makes my top three. And I'm already looking forward to Book 8.

Great book, Great series, Have read all her books and have enjoyed her writing style and characters.

5 out of 5 stars Great come-back after last book.......2007-08-13

I may have been disappointed in the previous book in this series, but this one more than made up for it.

When Jaime Vegas comes to Brentwood to film a TV special with two other spiritualists, it quickly becomes apparent to her that there is something not right in the garden out behind the house. There are spirits there that whisper to her and touch her, but otherwise cannot communicate. When she starts to investigate more fully, she begins to hear rumors of a group of humans who are becoming successful in using some forms of magic - are they using human sacrifice to gain power? With the help of Hope - a half-chaos demon - Eve - the ghost of a half-demon witch, who is now an angel and also Jaime's contact in the spirit world - and Jeremy Danvers - the werewolf Pack Alpha - Jaime must find the group of people practicing magic and find out what has happened to the ghosts on the garden.

Combining a great necromantic mystery with a minor romance sub-plot when Jeremy Danvers joins Jaime in LA, this novel has everything that makes the Women of the Otherworld series great - a strong heroine, a good storyline and a strong plot that keeps you guessing. Don't miss this one!

4 out of 5 stars it was good.......2007-07-31

I have read other of Armstrongs books, I found this one very good as well. It enlightened the characters from the others books, women of the other world. A good insight into the past and feelings of characters that took a minor role in bitten, stolen, and broken. If you enjoy the supernatural, you will enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Another Winner!.......2007-07-12

This was a great book! I enjoy reading all of Kelly Armstrong's stories. I like how she takes a minor character from one story and does a pretty much stand-alone book (for new readers) with Jaime and blends in previous characters which I like to read about (werewolves). If you don't start at the beginning of the series, this book will make you want to go back and purchase all of her others! What a great read!

Patternmaking for Fashion Design and DVD Package (4th Edition)

I'm an intermediate level sewer and haven't had a course in patternmaking. However I have found this book invaluable even though it is written as a textbook. I haven't read it cover to cover because I regard it as a reference book. However, after having reviewed the sections that relate to the sewing I do, I have found it very enlightening. There are certain principles that I didn't understand until I read it, such as dart rotation. This, for instance, will be very helpful to me in altering commercial patterns to make them fit better. I plan to do some pattern drafting, but will probably use it mostly in altering commercial patterns. For instance, I was recently altering a pants pattern and wondered if I was changing the ratio of the width of the front leg to the back. The book answered my question while books on pattern alterations didn't address this issue. The layout of the book has been thoroughly explained in other reviews, so I won't go into describing it. I will say, however, that I highly recommend this book for anyone who sews as a hobby because it answers a lot of questions one would have when it comes to altering commercial patterns or drafting simple patterns. It's expensive, but money well spent. This book should be in the library of any serious sewer.

1 out of 5 stars No, No, No.............2007-01-23

This book is outdated, outmoded, and nearly useless. It contains tons of information on how to manipulate fabrics that aren't even in use anymore. Hardly anything on dealing with knit fabrics, which look better and are easier to manipulate. Ask anyone under 50 if they have ever seen any darts in their clothes? And all this slashing and turning and manipulating??? not only is it sloppy, its useless, Useless, USELESS! Lots of money spent for vague instructions on basic blocks, and only clothes made in the 80's. Save eyour money, just because this book is expensive, doesn't make it useful.

3 out of 5 stars Extensive, but a few mistakes..........2006-11-03

I was required to purchase this book for my fashion design class. At first I was completely blown away at how comprehensive it was. It talked about measuring, darts and manipulation, basic patterns and principles, women, mens, children, knit, and sportswear. From what I can tell, it's based off of " Industry Standards". So It's not your everyday Joe book.

During class though, many of my teachers noticed discrepancies in the instructions. Particularly the fitted arm block. It made me fail my class twice because the first and second teacher didn't catch that the instructions were incorrect, causing me to continually make an incorrect arm block. It took my DRAPING teacher to find out that the book was incorrect in the instructions for the sleeve cap.

We also had a problem during class, when the instructions made an extremely wonky sleeve pattern, and also a two dart bodice. The student was extremely frustrated with the book and the teacher for their lack of help and knowledge. The student was not an " industry standard" size. So the measurement guides were not available to her to make a proper judgement. She had to receive a bad grade because the book would not produce the correct pattern, and the teacher didn't know what to do.

Otherwise, this book is still a great reference. Many of the styles seem outdated, but yet can be played on to create current looks. But some of the wedding sleeve types are somewhat awful, but that's personal opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Some Instructions Inadequate.......2006-09-10

I purchased this book as my figure has changed and I needed to re-do my basic slopers. The pattern design books I currently have did not cover trousers so I was delighted to find a new book that was apparently so comprehensive.

I found however that the method used to create basic bodice slopers, simply did not work with my measurements. There was no way the strap measurement was going to reach the line it was supposed to and there is no way to work around it as the rest of the drafting works from the point created.

I would also have liked some instructions on how to take measurements on live people rather than just models. If "the strap measurement may cover the armplate", what happens with an arm in the way? After all at least a few fashion students would hopefully go on to work with actual people rather than just standard measurements or models. I thought it was a major flaw in the book that there was no instruction on taking personal measurements & so little instruction on creating the basic slopers. It is really disppointing to have to find another method before I can use the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally ! Best value for my dollar.......2006-09-01

I received this book yesterday and read the first 100 pages. I've sewn all my life and consider myself an advanced seamstress. I've sewn and made my own patterns for childrens' heirloom, business suits, and now enjoy making (jazz) dance costumes. I'm the one in line at the fabric store buying ten patterns, just to combine different details and features in different sizes, especially if sewing for a group. I probably own hundreds of patterns and almost that many books. For me, this book will pay for itself many times over. It isn't a sewing "how to" book and it wouldn't be the first book for a beginner. The reader should be familiar or use other reference books for actual garment construction techniques. I've bought other, less expensive sewing books to learn pattern manipulation and fitting techniques. I put off the purchase of this book, being put off by its price. But, finally! This book is so inspiring and liberating. In just the first 100 pages, I've gotten through the basic patternmaking and dart manipulation. I think I may never have to buy another pattern again ! This is definitely a must have for the serious sewing enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Words of Encouragement for All Disappointments.......2007-09-16

This may seem a little odd, but I am neither divorcing nor divorced; and I am a guy. I will tell you that this book of daily thoughts and meditations does have a perspective geared toward women and toward divorce. I would also say that men can benefit from this book too and about 95% of what is in the book is geared toward God's blessing and provision in any challenging situation or life disappointment. Ours happened to surround an adolescent daughter; and everything that accompanied that entire situation. If you think about it, there are lots of situations in life that involve unexpected change, loss, separation, etc. Divorce is only one of them.

I would recommend this book to anyone - male or female; who is or has walked through a "valley of the shadow". It will change you and help restore you. You will learn that no matter how hard you tried or what walk of life you are from, that you are not alone, and you are not the first person something bad has happened to. You will also learn, in small readings that take 3-5 minutes each day to get through, that you have a watchful, loving and caring God, who sees, knows, helps, and understands.

God bless you in your journey.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to read during a difficult time.......2007-07-08

I am a fan of Kristin Armstrong's articles in Runners World magazine, and I had seen her on Good Morning America promoting this book. Two days after being diagnosed with breast cancer, I bought this book since I had heard that it was a great book for anyone going through a difficult time. I've been reading a few pages of the book every day, and much of what is written can be used to get through any tough time -- it's not limited to divorce or a broken relationship. Kristin is a great inspiration since she went through a terrible time of trial and used the time to delve into her spirituality, and she refused to wallow in bitterness and regret. The book has shown me light on some dark days.

5 out of 5 stars Readings will help and encourage women as they journey through their first year of divorce.......2007-06-06

Kristin Armstrong's divorce from professional cyclist Lance Armstrong led her to write HAPPILY EVER AFTER: Walking with Peace and Courage Through a Year of Divorce, a personal 365-day devotional geared toward women (especially with children) whose marriages are dissolving.

"I never imagined that divorce would be part of my life history or my family's legacy," writes Armstrong, mother of three, whose marriage to Lance lasted five years. "I have walked this path, from the trenches of despair, through pitfalls of anger, bottlenecks of blame, along the cliffs of loneliness and fear."

As she navigated through her divorce, Armstrong kept a journal of the scriptures that were most encouraging to her. The result is this book, she writes in the introduction. The scriptures are a mixed bag, with such gems as the Isaiah 40:31 passage "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength..." to more obscure ones like Amos 6:1: "Woe to you who are complacent in Zion."

The book begins on Day 1 as Armstrong acknowledges the tough road ahead. "This year will be epic for you...Every day, many times a day, you will make decisions that determine the rest of your story...Eventually you will be surprised to find yourself healed, whole, and happily living your brand-new life." As the devotional continues, she addresses difficult issues such as the need for forgiveness, letting go of retaliation and gossip, and letting go of the worry over preserving your reputation. "To practice silence and discretion in these situations is wise," she advises.

There is a welcome tone of quiet and resolve that permeates the pages. "The path of sour bitterness, crusty resentment, and cold regret breeds generations of despair. The path of righteousness grants generations of peace, quietness and confidence," she writes in an early devotion. Many readers longing for comfort and kindness will find them in Armstrong's words, as she reminds them in the persona of a close girlfriend: "Now is not the time to make sense of this mess.... Sweetheart, now is the time to trust in the Lord with all your heart."

There is an occasional question mark. Armstrong says in one essay that she believes it is important to experience your pain fully rather than numbing it with "remedies" --- therapy, coping pills, exercise, massage. Does she believe these are wrong things to do? Or that they are not enough? A little more context here would be helpful, as it would in the devotional telling of the story of a couple who refused to accept their cancer diagnosis: "She and her husband, Bob, are both cancer free today." (What about those who are not healed?) Occasionally, there is some repetition, such as two devotionals centered on the word "betrothed" (Day 251 and Day 92).

But overwhelmingly, Armstrong's soothing essays prompt women toward growth, resilience and an opportunity for reinvention while acknowledging their pain and need for God. Repeatedly, she affirms the reader and assures her of God's love: "(God) loves you, cherishes you, is faithful to you, is honest with you, and will never leave you." She includes glimpses into her own divorce, such as the pain of walking through grocery store checkouts and seeing the tabloid headlines, but laudably these are asides rather than the focus. One of the most moving devotions tells of her baptism as an infant, and then her "baptism" as an adult in a rainstorm.

What repeatedly comes through is her unquestioning faith that God will bring something good out of divorce. The devotions are peppered with the phrase, "I am blessed...." Her gratitude and seeming lack of visible bitterness keep the devotions centered squarely on God and healing. "It's natural to lament the death of a marriage, but in our grief let us not lose sight of or appreciation for the fact that we are still betrothed, still desired, still vital to the one Being who will never fail us."

Armstrong writes, "I found my unshakeable compass in the Lord... May you find your center, a strength and courage you did not know you could summon.... The terrain ahead is rough, but there are gifts hidden along your path of faith."

This moving and encouraging collection of readings will help and encourage women as they journey through their first year of divorce.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully Spiritual Book.......2007-05-21

Kristin Armstrong has written a fantastic book that goes beyond being a spiritual devotional for women going through a divorce, it is a book for anyone who is facing hardships (and who does not face difficulties at some point?). In this book she bares her soul through sharing bible scriptures that helped her get through the tough times. In addition to the 365 scriptures, she shares her personal journey of growth during the year following her divorce.

I am neither a woman, nor am I going through a divorce, but I found her book to be inspirational and very uplifting.

I purchased the book because I know the author, and have a policy of reading any book written by someone I know....but this is really an exceptional work. I know you will enjoy reading this book.

I saw the author advertising this book on a talk show - it was not quite what I imagined. It was ok, inspirational, but it was written as a journal and was from a very religious perspective (something not mentioned at all or in the reviews I read).
