From the school of unemotional investing comes the classic How to Make Money in Stocks, by Wall Street analyst and publisher William O'Neil. Readers new to securities will find it an excellent primer, one that relies on time-honored indicators such as quarterly earnings, market capitalization, and daily indexes. O'Neil's study of winning stocks stretches back to the 1960s, and he shares his insights here, describing what characterizes a growth stock, when to cut your losses (at 7 or 8 percent, no more), and how to spot a market top.

The techniques in How to Make Money in Stocks are hardly revolutionary, but therein lies their strength, as O'Neil claims his is "a winning system in good times or bad." Investors interested in Net stocks might be disappointed--the author's first rule is that a company must show a pattern of growing profits, which disqualifies many dot coms. (Try Rule Breakers, Rule Makers for a different take.) O'Neil's approach to stocks is, above all, rational, and he pays little heed to market hype.

Those new to investing would do well to read this book before embarking, and even more seasoned traders may find How to Make Money in Stocks a refreshing return to basics. Markets may swing bull and bear, but O'Neil promises to stand firm. --Demian McLean

5 out of 5 stars Championship Stock Trading Methods Revealed.......2007-10-17

I'll heard about this book years ago, but dismissed it because of it's title. But, I learned that someone named David Ryan won three investing championships with real money using the methods revealed in this book. And I wanted to start trading in the stock market again, but this time I wanted to learn a method that will help me be successful for a change.

I think that if you are new to investing in the stock market and would like to learn a good way to get started, then this book "How To Make Money In Stocks," by William O'Neil is a good guide.

You will learn all about the CANSLIM rules for selecting stocks that are about to make the big price moves. Also included is advice on buying only when a stock is making new highs or breaking out on big volume and cutting your loses short to protect your funds if you're wrong.

It shows you the five basic chart patterns that you should look for in a stock that is about to take off. And these patterns will help you buy at the right price.

The last few chapters are devoted to the features of Investor's Business Daily, which will help you find and track stocks that match the characteristics of the CANSLIM method.

I actually order this book at a local Borders -- paying full price -- because I didn't want to wait for the mail. I was in a hurry to learn how to use Investors.com -- one of the websites of Investors' Business Daily which I have subscribed too.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not great.......2007-09-13

I'm new to investing but have read 7 books in the last couple of months on investing and financial statement analysis. These other books (the intelligent investor etc.) are more focused on value investing and tend to dissuade from considering stocks at all time highs. So it was interesting to read a different approach and this book would certainly make me consider looking at more growth stocks. It was also good to get some basics on chart interpretation which I think will prove useful. The downside is that the book (like all his books from looking at other reviews) focuses too much on IBD his website/newspaper, also the explanations for interpreting the charts was not really thorough enough, also a lot of the charts that he advised not to buy on did not look all that dissimilar in places to charts that he advised were good buys - its easy to go back in hindsight on the ones that didn't take off in price and pick holes into why they didn't.
Also his guide to selling at 7% to 8% below your buy price seems a bit extreme - maybe this is just for high risk growth stock buys but in general given the nature of the market most stock fluctuate far more and could be down 8% over a week to recover to the same of higher level the following week. If you sold every time as he suggests you'd constantly be selling and trying to find new stocks to buy.
He seemingly derides the value investing concept which is odd as some of the best investors of all time followed this approach - Buffett & Graham and their disciples being the obvious ones. Overall an interesting read for a different perspective and introduction to chart interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars Study This Book.......2007-09-08

This book is very easy and most interesting to read. The author, Wm. O'Neil is the founder of Investor Business Daily newspaper, which I have always considered the best financial newspaper.
If you are willing to "study" and learn rather than just read this book, You will make money in stocks.
I use this book and Jim Cramer's 'Real money' and 'Mad Money' books daily (almost like text books) to study, learn and apply what I learn.

5 out of 5 stars Hybrid Investing 101.......2007-07-27

An excellent book on how to use both fundamental and technical analysis together to produce big profits. William J O neal is a great author.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I read this 10 years ago.......2007-06-08

Great book. Sound concepts that work. Yes, I subscribe to the paper (IBD) and use his rules. I'm up over 30% in a solid bull market over the last 4 months without being fully invested. When the market pulls back, my stocks also pull back, but when the market is up, my stocks tend to go up hard.

I find that I do better when I pyramid up after a bounce off the 50-day rather than every 2% or round number like promoted by Darvas. It's a good book worth underlining and scribbling all over the margins.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Boring book.......2007-06-10

Keeps repeating the same things over and over using different words. Very boring and nothing new to learn.

4 out of 5 stars Modern logistics - an executive summary.......2007-02-08

After reading various textbooks on logistics, quantitative analysis and strategy, this book was very refreshing, in large part from the fact that it is a short and non-technical book. The title of my review says it all, this book is summary for busy people wanting to get som insights into what is going on in logistics and organizational theory . I got through the book in two readings, which is a very valuable aspect for busy people.
Still, despite being brief, it touches on most important aspects, and points you to further areas of importance if what you read here makes you want to change things in your organization.
So: Not technical, easy read, 4 stars instead of 5 because it is too brief to be truly useful for those that actually want to learn the subject-matter.

PS: The printing I recieved was a defect, pages 247 to 278 missing (Replaced by duplicate pages 215-246), ust watch out for that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Advanced SCM Book - Repost.......2007-01-05

This is a wonderful book and introduces the practioner to some of the frontiers of strategically driven service response logistics. In other words how to design, deploy and organize integrated SCM for corporate strategic reasons, not just for functional cost control. Probably one of three key books for understanding the frontiers and highly recommended.

Key is the process, customer value and system integration perspectives threaded throughout but particularly in the last several chapters. The chaper on service response logistics is worth the price of the book.

As a practioner dealing with advanced SCM I found this very worthwhile and found myself wishing I'd written it. If you are relatively new to the field you need a decent baseline grounding and Stock & Lambert's book on 'Strateigc Logistics' is a perfect complement. To move slightly higher up the food chain get the recent compilation of HBR articles called 'Managing the Value Chain'. Together the three make a perfect bookshelf set for any practioner, student or corporate executive who needs to understand what integrated logistics, SCM or the future of e-business might be doing to your career or your firm's competitive prospects !

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read, theorethically strong and practical enough.......2006-03-03

After reading many books about logistics and supply chain issues, this third edition adds value to the field.

The author confirms his visionary approach and provides new thinking on supply chain risk and resilience. Not only agility is now more elaborated and explained as an important logistics strategy together with leaness, but also, hybrid strategies are proposed and practical cases are developed.

As always, the author ends with a view to the future and introduce the readers in the ever challenging thoughs of business transformations.

5 out of 5 stars I Need It Yesterday .......2005-06-12

At first glance this is a book that is going to scare off the vast number of readers. Unless you are in this field or this is part of your daily job, why would you read this book. I submit that most managers today need to have a basic understanding of this process, which is why I read this book. Overall I came to the book with no real understanding of the topic nor had I ever read a book along these lines before. I found the book to be a nice and understandable overview of the topic. I did find it to be a bit more detailed then I was looking for, but I understand that the book was not necessarily meant for a reader such as myself.

I think what interested me most was that I used to think of this topic as just a line of trucks coming into the plant so to speak. The book brings out that supply chains are really complex networks with many moving parts. Due to the increased out sourcing and off shoring, the complexity of these chains has grown. With this complexity comes even more of a need for pro-active coordination within the network. This is the reason the book and concepts are important. Overall I enjoyed the book. Sure it had more detail then I wanted, but I assume that a seasoned professional in this line of work needs that detail. I also found the book to be, at times, a bit dry, but I attribute this to my lack of real depth in the area. If you are looking for something in this subject I think this is a good starting point.

Product Description

People travel from far and wide to taste the fresh and delicious seafood served at Uncle Bubba s Oyster House in Savannah, but now you can stay home and let chef and owner Earl Bubba Hiers treat you to his famous Southern hospitality. His first-ever cookbook tells you how to prepare both the dishes that made his restaurant famous and the home cooking that he and his older sister, Food Network star Paula Deen, grew up eating in their Granny Paul s kitchen.
Learn how to make the finger-lickin , Dixieland favorites like Low Country Boil, Lip-Smackin -Good Chicken Casserole, Salmon and Grits, and Oyster Stew. Right off the restaurant s menu are dishes like BBQ Shrimp, Gumbo, and Shrimp and Grits. And because good cooking seems to run in Bubba s family, recipes like Raised Biscuits, Kathy s Dig Deep Salad, and Cheesy Squash Casserole come straight from the recipe boxes in the authentic Southern kitchens of Bubba s grannies, aunts, and friends.
Desserts are Bubba s favorite, and there s no shortage. Try Aunt Glennis s version of the classic Dixie staple, Red Velvet Cake, or the Lemon Cheese Cake, which true Southerners know is not a cheesecake at all. There s also Chocolate Almond Pie, Butterscotch Pound Cake, Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie, and three recipes for truly scrumptious desserts that are Paula s gift to her baby brother. Plus, along with the recipes, you ll get family stories and photographs that bring Bubba and Paula s Georgia childhood to life.
Like his restaurant, Bubba s recipes are casual perfect for summer cookouts and picnics where paper napkins and plastic forks are just fine, and the card playing and story swapping begins when the Chargrilled Oysters are put on the table and doesn t end until long after the last bite of Georgia Peach Cake is cleaned from the plate. Soon, just like Bubba, you ll be spending long afternoons around the grill, bragging on your barbecue and waiting for the Beer Rolls to come out of the oven.

EARL BUBBA HIERS is the chef and co-owner of Uncle Bubba s Oyster House in Savannah, Georgia. Before joining his sister, Paula Deen, in the restaurant business, he operated a highly successful landscaping and grounds-keeping company in his hometown, Albany, Georgia. In 1999, Bubba got his start when he moved to Savannah to help Paula and her sons, Jamie and Bobby, renovate a historic downtown building as a new home for their popular restaurant, The Lady & Sons. Bubba lives with his family in Savannah.

POLLY POWERS STRAMM is a native of Savannah, Georgia. Her articles have appeared in magazines and regional newspapers and her weekly column, Polly s People, runs in the Morning News. She lives with her family in Savannah.

5 out of 5 stars Bubba's The Best!.......2007-06-13

I've been to Uncle Bubba's Restaurant in Savannah several times...I dare say our family likes to food better there then The Lady and Son's! I see a Food Network show in his future. If they were smart they would make a show with Bubba and Paula's husband Michael, because those two together are a hoot! The cookbook is great with lots of wonderful seafood recipe and side dishes...try the cornbread muffins they are out of this world.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

4 out of 5 stars Good Mornig Gorillas.......2006-12-15

Good Morning gorillas
Good Morning Gorillas is by Mary Pope Osborne. In this magic tree house book, the main Characters are Jack and Annie is in the rain forest. This book is about jack and Annie meeting a little gorilla who leads them to his family and becoming close friends. What I think the author is saying is you can become friends with animals. I can't tell my favorite part because it's the end and I don't want to give away the ending. But even though it was sad I loved it. I think it would be a good book for people who love animals.

This whole series is absolutely "the best" ! In our family, children under eight have loved listening to each of them as read-alouds, and as they get older, they've devoured them again while reading on their own. Each one is a guaranteed hit as a birthday or holiday gift too.

Gorillas in the Mountains of Africa!

Good Morning Gorillas by Mary Pope Osborne is an adventurous animal fiction story. The two main characters are Jack who takes notes wherever he goes and Annie who is very adventurous in finding new friends and clues. Jack and Annie travel in the magic tree house to go to the jungle in the mountains of Africa. They are going to Africa to save gorillas from extinction. I recommend this book for all children ages nine and up. You can learn about gorillas and their suprising gentle nature. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5.

Book Description

The world's leading expert on the global software industry and coauthor of the bestseller Microsoft Secrets reveals the inner workings of software giants like IBM, Microsoft, and Netscape and shows what it takes to create, develop, and manage a successful company -- in good times and bad -- in the most fiercely competitive business in the world.

In the $600 billion software industry it is the business, not the technology, that determines success or failure. This fact -- one that thousands of once glamorous start-ups have unhappily discovered for themselves -- is the well-documented conclusion of this enormously readable and revealing new book by Michael Cusumano, based on nearly twenty years of research and consulting with software producers around the world.

Cusumano builds on dozens of personal experiences and case studies to show how issues of strategy and organization are irrevocably linked with those of managing the technology and demonstrates that a thorough understanding of these issues is vital to success. At the heart of the book Cusumano poses seven questions that underpin a three-pronged management framework. He argues that companies must adopt one of three basic business models: become a products company at one end of the strategic spectrum, a services company at the other end, or a hybrid solutions company in between. The author describes the characteristics of the different models, evaluates their strengths and weaknesses, and shows how each is more or less appropriate for different stages in the evolution of a business as well as in good versus bad economic times. Readers will also find invaluable Cusumano's treatment of software development issues ranging from architecture and teams to project management and testing, as well as two chapters devoted to what it takes to create a successful software start-up. Highlights include eight fundamental guidelines for evaluating potential software winners and Cusumano's probing analysis, based on firsthand knowledge, of ten start-ups that have met with varying degrees of success.

The Business of Software is timely essential reading for managers, programmers, entrepreneurs, and others who follow the global software industry.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome !.......2007-07-20

Cusumano shows us what we, IT professionals, should know about business of software. He also shows us, in a very simple manner, what we must really know about software and its value chain.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-05-01

This book is like a text book. Excellent source of information. Too much emphasis on Microsoft but when this book was written, Microsoft was at the top of their field.

4 out of 5 stars Great insight into the world of enterprise software business.......2007-01-08

Well written, detailed, and insightful, best describe this book. Very helpful for any ISV or software product development manager. Cusamano, having served many of the companies he chronicles in this book, provides a uniquely human "insiders look" into the heart of these monolithic software titans. His insight and clear understanding of trends and business models in the often obscured and esoteric space of enterprise software is incredibly helpful to any "little guy" eager to learn how the "big guys" do it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2006-03-31

The Business of Software is an excellent read and growth tool for seasoned practitioners. Organized in three major sections it explores:

(1) Product vs. services vs. hybrid software organizations' strengths and weaknesses, and how they can change over time (think about your company...!).

(2) Software development strategies and outcomes. At first glance, this section seems less relevant - until you find yourself defending why your latest release is waaaaay late... There are some excellent ideas here that can apply to the creation and roll-out of "core" demos.

(3) Entrepreneurship - successes, failures, and ongoing question marks - the author explores what key factors contribute to the end result. The case studies at the end of this section can serve as virtual mirrors onto one's own organization.

This is good and useful reading, particularly for those who seek to move upwards in their organizations or are contemplating joining a new or emerging company.

4 out of 5 stars Book's value is in provactive questions.......2006-03-13

The most useful sections for technology marketers are in Chapter 2 about strategy, where Cusumano asks provocative questions that will give you a new way of looking at your products, services and company direction.

Also useful is Chapter 4 on best practices, which will give you some benchmarks for comparing your operations and development activities to industry leaders.

Much of the book focuses on presenting detailed analysis of the rise and fall of companies during the technology boom and bust in recent years. The stories can be interesting, but it seems to me that information is getting dated given the challenges that face technology companies today.

Suze Orman's face and name are more prominent on the cover of her new money guide than its title, The Road to Wealth. And why not? Orman has parlayed her popular renown as both a New York Times bestselling author and video-age financial guru into an undeniable position of respect and trust when it comes to matters of dollars and sense. This time she presents an encyclopedic guide to the various components of one's overall financial life--from managing debt and owning a home to making investments and preparing to pass it all along--and she does so in the clear and confident style to which her fans have become accustomed. "Here is what you need to know," she writes at the outset. "Answers to the questions you have been asking, as well as the questions you should have been asking, delivered in the most complete, straightforward way I know." While the concise text moves logically from "creating a strong financial foundation to amassing assets and protecting them from common mistakes and periods of economic downturn," this is not meant to be read from cover to cover. Rather, it is a ready bookshelf reference for planning and sorting out common finance concerns, like how to calculate the mortgage payment you can best afford, determine what Medicare will pay toward nursing care, decide between retirement plan options, and similar matters of personal importance. --Howard Rothman

5 out of 5 stars The Road to Wealth: A Comprehensive Guide to Your Money.......2007-08-24

What an amazing book !!!! At 40, I know nothing of financing. Religiously living paycheck to paycheck and raising young children, life gets to be overwhelming. This book has empowered me to look at my finances, my life in a whole new light. There is a way to help my children. I wish Suze Orman could be my financial planner. I have learned so much and yet I have so much more to learn thanks to her advice, insight and experience. This book is an incredible beginning for my journey. If only I had known earlier.

3 out of 5 stars Not really worth what I paid for it.......2007-06-20

But it did include some information that's nice to know. My investment strategy is a bit more aggressive and this audio-book leaned conservative. Then again, I wasn't familiar with Suze Orman before purchasing this book. So all in all, I'd say it's a decent read for most people, though I would have probably benefited more from her "Young and Broke."

3 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-05-13

Book is giving a good overview on many different options for investing money. Writing is fluent and easily to understand also for newcomers in this field. There is no difficult language. Reading this will improve any discussion you might have with a so called financial advisor.

5 out of 5 stars Suze is awesome.......2007-02-24

Suze really knows how to explain finances in a easy way for anybody to understand. I liked it so much I told my boss about it who bought it and also I bought the book for my father who is close to retirement.
Thanks,
Suze

5 out of 5 stars lovely.......2007-08-20

this makes a great gift, i purchased 6 copies of this book for friends as a going away present. the poems are all-purpose, i think the title is a misnomer... i'd recommend to anyone who likes unpretentious quality poetry

4 out of 5 stars humor, pathos, above average!.......2007-02-18

Garrison Keeler is a master. Great for upper elementary and middle school children to read too.

5 out of 5 stars Keillor's selection of poetry.......2007-01-12

Garrison Keillor has an uncommon ability to select poetry that inspires the mind by creating accessible images that speak to the reader more than the usual turgid poetry. I thoroughly enjoyed his selections even though I do not share his religious leanings (about 5 % have Christian references). The poems he chooses have universal appeal.

5 out of 5 stars A comfort to me during my most difficult trial.......2006-12-26

I stumbled into this book at the library - about 2 weeks after my wife passed away suddenly - I loved the introduction, and the poems really hit home hard, and really were a comfort - and it seemed that nothing anyone could say was very comforting, but the words through literature was comforting. So after reading this at the library I wanted to make sure I owned a copy of this book as this is a book I'll want to read over and over again. I can't say more about what an excellent collection this is, and of course, It think Garrison Keillor is probably one of the most incredible comic geniuses of our modern era -

4 out of 5 stars Another Keillor 'must' read.......2006-11-20

Nothing that Garrison Keillor writes should be ignored. A good percentage of what he writes, reads just as he sounds on his unique show 'A Prairie Home Companion', which is to say, great. Another reviewer has noted the quality and importance of his Introduction. Ditto ! Me too. This book will not make you feel good. It will make you feel better, if you are down and out and want to know that you are not crazy, that there is a lot of bad stuff out there, people are in the same boat, it's a big boat, and there are life preservers. Some of these poems are life preservers. Some others may make you want to go overboard. Avoid this urge. Not healthy. "These poems describe a common life. It is good to know about this. I hope you take courage from it." Well done, Mr keillor, well said.

5 out of 5 stars Love these stories.......2007-08-25

My son loves these stories and he learns a little about each destination. The only problem I have with the books is that proper sentence structure is not always used. Did the editors not notice? These books are for beginner readers, so it is confusing to them not to have proper "subject/verb" sentence structure.

5 out of 5 stars Higher numbered books are longer.......2007-07-17

I have the audio CD versions of every story 1-24 and 29-32. I can tell you that the stories 29-32 are much longer than any of the books in the first few sets.

For example, books 17-24 have a total play time of almost exactly 5 hours compared with books 29-32 with a total story time just over 5 hours. So, you get 50% less "books", but the same story reading time.

I am just purchasing this set 25-28 now, and I do not yet know the running time of these stories. But.. you should evaluate the hours of audio enjoyment, not just the number of books when making your comparisons. Perhaps Amazon will add this information to the details, or perhaps I just missed it.

3 out of 5 stars Why only 4 books.......2007-06-01

I agree with the other comment 100%. I am dissapointed at such a blatent marketing ploy to charge more money for less content. Done in the best "bait and switch", new and (not) improved tradition. I'll buy it for the same reason, but it is frustrating.

3 out of 5 stars Why only 4?.......2007-03-23

Why are there only 4 stories on this set for nearly the same price as 8 on the previous three audio CD releases? I'll buy it because my daughter loves them, but I can't say I'm thrilled with paying only $2 less for half the content.

Today, within the United States, a "doctor of naturopathy" (N.D.) or "doctor of naturopathic medicine" (N.M.D.) credential is available from four full-time schools of naturopathy and at least eight nonaccredited correspondence schools, of which seven maintain Web sites [A, B, C, D, E, F, G]. (One correspondence school, the Progressive Universal Life Church, offers a "Ph.D. in Naturopathy" for $250 plus "life experience with no coursework.)

It seems that everyone in the world has an opinion on how to be healthy and how to eat right. I've read a lot of junk, and I'm happy to say that Valerie Saxion is right on the money. Why? Because I feel great, all the time. Sorry, very hokey, but very true. Her advice is really good, and shows meaningful ways on suppressing your appetite, eating healthier and finding the right supplements. She even included a directory of practicing naturopatic doctors in the United States. I'm thankful for this book, which uses Biblical examples on how the human body should work, and how to cleanse one's self of parasites, and other nasties. If you're serious about health, this book is a great start.

Book Description

Joey Harker isn't a hero.

In fact, he's the kind of guy who gets lost in his own house.

But then one day, Joey gets really lost. He walks straight out of his world and into another dimension.

Joey's walk between the worlds makes him prey to two terrible forces—armies of magic and science who will do anything to harness his power to travel between dimensions.

When he sees the evil those forces are capable of, Joey makes the only possible choice: to join an army of his own, an army of versions of himself from different dimensions who all share his amazing power and who are all determined to fight to save the worlds.

Master storyteller Neil Gaiman and Emmy Award-winning science-fiction writer Michael Reaves team up to create a dazzling tale of magic, science, honor, and the destiny of one very special boy—and all the others like him.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but not great.......2007-10-11

Gaiman is one of my favorite writers. This middle-grade level book was good, but not as interesting as others he has done such as Coraline.

The premise is fine - a series of parallel worlds with two warring societies, one magical and one technical, working their way from opposite ends of the "arc" of worlds, each trying to take control. The protagonist and his counterparts from the parallel worlds are in the middle, trying to maintain the balance.

It is never explained why or how the protagonist and his ilk have the power to walk between these worlds. The protagonist resolves most of the issues through last minute aid from other sources or by accident, not his own efforts, which doesn't seem to be a good example in this reading age level.

The other main problem I had is the whole theme is balance, yet other than a minor skirmish the only real conflict comes from the magical side, not the technical side. And in their efforts to stop the magical side, it seems to me that would have tipped the scales far toward the technical society.

It was an easy, enjoyable read, but lacking some of the plot intricacies that I expect from Gaimain, and even at this age level the audience should also expect.

2 out of 5 stars Not Like Gaiman at All.......2007-09-01

First, a caveat: I am 26 years old and therefore am clearly not within the 9-12 demographic for which this book is intended. Perhaps it is unfair to ask that young adult novels stand up to the scrutiny of adult readers. However, Gaiman is a first-rate talent and I think that it is fair to expect his writing to stand up to such age-independent works as the later Harry Potter novels, Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy, or Mieville's Un Lun Dun.

InterWorld has an amazing premise: Joey Harker, a completely unremarkable teenager, gets caught up in a conflict that spans the infinite worlds of the multiverse in an epic conflict between magic and science. Even if I hadn't been a Gaiman fan, I would have picked up this novel based simply on the brilliance of the set up.

Unfortunately, InterWorld consistently fails to deliver. Joey lacks any compelling characteristics of a great protagonist; he seems, in fact, to be a rather dull and unintelligent teenager. This is true even after his transformation from a normal kid into a major player in this epic conflict; he never moves beyond one-dimension. Especially disappointing is the missed opportunity of interesting interaction between many alternate versions of the same character. Despite the (literally) infinite potential of the multiverse, neither the magical HEX nor the technological Binary, nor anything in between, is fleshed out enough to be really interesting. This is especially true of the Binary side, which gets shafted in favor of a climax devoted entirely to the HEX side of the equation.

Perhaps most disappointing, the quality of the writing is decidedly inferior. Anyone familiar with Gaiman can vouch for the magical quality of his prose. Stardust, for example, is written in language that any literate 9-12 year old would understand and appreciate, yet positively sings with lyrical elegance. In comparison, InterWorld feels plodding and clumsy. Even with the device of the first person narrator, which provides plenty of opportunity for a conversational style in the mode of a modern teenage boy, the result is inappropriately formal, or else clunky in that no teenager actually speaks in such a way. Simply put: InterWorld doesn't feel like Gaiman at all. It is much more in the mode of Reaves' Star Wars novels.

To be fair, InterWorld is a fast-paced story based on a brilliant premise that bridges the science-fiction/fantasy gap. It is an easy read, and it is enjoyable enough for what it is. However, given that this story spent the last decade on the backburner while Gaiman and Reaves worked on other projects, I can't help but think that they should have left it there.

4 out of 5 stars Joey to the Infinite Power!.......2007-08-15

Neil Gaiman is well known for his fantasy novels and graphic novels and lately has gained quite a bit of status, especially since Stardust is due to hit theaters soon. According to the Afterword, this part SF, part Fantasy story was written by Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves years ago and then shelved away out of lack of interest. What so often happens when authors gain fame and attention happened in this case, a story that generated no interest before and couldn't find a publisher is dusted off and given life on the bookstore shelf.

Joey Harker is nothing special, or so he thinks. If anything his ability to get lost in his own house is downright embarrassing. But then one day he manages take a wrong turn and winds up in another dimension. The ability to walk through worlds is a special one, and there are forces that intend to use Joey for their own ends. The only safety for Joey is an army . . . of himself. But saving the universe is a tough business and it's not so easy for one boy to turn into a hero overnight. Before he comes into his own, Joey has a lot of growing up to do. It's a fascinating idea: an army crafted between dimensions out of self preservation. It's also a really quick read. At only 233 pages, the story has to keep moving pretty quickly in order to wrap up before the book cover closes. This tale has much in common with superhero storylines and feels almost comic-book like in nature, despite the text storyline. This isn't too surprising given that Gaiman is well known for his Sandman graphic novels and Reaves is an award-winning television writer who worked on Batman: The Animated Series and Gargoyles.

Overall, I'd say the book isn't bad--particularly for something that was dusted off from storage. But while the world building is fascinating, the plotting tends to be way too simplistic and clichéd. Even the target audience for this novel (9-12 year-olds) is going to be familiar with some of these plot elements: Joey's friendship with a "dangerous" creature from in-between that becomes a sort of pet and sidekick, the crochety, never-a-nice-word to anybody leader, and the reluctant hero heading out to rescue his friends in a do or die situation after he's been kicked to the curb. So, if someone's looking for originality in the storyline, they may be a bit disappointed. Still, the story isn't dead in the water, and there's some fascinating glimpses and ideas to be had, but it could have been much stronger--both writers are capable of better plotting. Likewise, there isn't much time for characterization in the brief adventure tale and most of the cast gets the short end of a stick on description. We get glimpses, but no time to really get to know most of them. My biggest complaint is that things go at a comfortable pace in the beginning--introducing Joey and his teacher and his first World Walk. Then everything starts to run a bit too quickly once we get to the Interworld base. Joey goes from being rescued to being a recruit at a very sudden pace and the entire part of the story that takes place at the Interworld school feels glossed over. It would have been interesting to spend more time on that part and expand the growth of Joey from clueless victim who gets others killed to heroic teammate who saves the day.

While there are deaths in this book and some gruesome threats to the protagonists, there isn't as much actual grisly death in the story and it does have a happy ending for the most part. The story will probably work best for young teens and mature preteens who enjoy the kind of blended SF and Fantasy that is found in superhero comics. It's a quick read and therefore may appeal to those who dislike longer works or endless series. For older teens and readers who have cut their eyeteeth on Gaiman's longer fiction, this may be a bit of a disappointment and it might be one to borrow from the library before buying to see if it's worth it. For those who enjoy this and want to find more Neil Gaiman books to read, check out Neverwhere and Stardust. And for other adventures in SF and Fantasy, check out Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins and Mister Monday by Garth Nix.

Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

5 out of 5 stars Neal Gaiman almost never fails.......2007-08-01

Great, this is for children of course but is also enjoyable for adults anyway. I read the whole thing in an afternoon, would have loved to see it as a TV show or movie, maybe an anime would be the best medium.

Anything from Gaiman has great quality - sorry, never heard of the other author before - and almost always is just what I like.

5 out of 5 stars Great Characters and True Imagination.......2007-07-29

Wow! The story was smart, exciting, and there's a part with the protagonist, Joey and his mom that got me a bit choked up. A real page turner, I found I was saying to myself, "just one more page, and one more, and...

A thoroughly satisfying sci-fi adventure, with a touch of Spielberg film (without the sappy music). Great character development, incredible worlds, and something lacking in many films today: unbelievably horrible and hate-able villains. So bad you could smell them. Bravo!
