An interesting if not biased look at the life (and art?) of Roger Corman. Essential reading for low-budget filmmaking.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting read for pop culture, film and business buffs.......2006-06-24

I'm not sure of how I happened upon this biography, but I'm glad I did. I'm not particularly a Roger Corman fan, having seen perhaps three or four of his films without really noticing that Corman had a part in their making.

Corman's life is interesting. Not only was he probably the most successful independent filmaker in history, he was also mentor and first-chance for many of today's leading producers, directors, writers and stars.

Remarkably down to earth and honest, Corman admits that his life has not been totally fulfilling: like many successful people, success is never enough - there's always one more challenge down the road and more than one challenge left unexplored in the past.

Corman engages in some, but not deep, analysis of his films, explains his evolving political philosophy and provides snippets that from another author might be construed as name-dropping. But Corman was there and it's his interactions with these people he's talking about, so it's not in the least obnoxious.

Above all, the value of Corman's book may not be to film buffs, but to business people, especially small scale entrepreneurs. Corman's management methods and his approach to filmaking were true nose-to-the-grindstone. He knew his market; he studied his market; he created his product to appeal to his market and he kept costs down to a minimum in order to reduce his risk of loss.

Quite a guy and his biography is worth the couple of hours it takes to read it.

3 out of 5 stars You'll Understand Corman Better.......2005-06-26

To this day, I haven't seen one Corman film I've liked. Still, this book is a nice look into the world of low-budget producing. It gave me the opportunity to truly understand my disdain for Corman and AIP.

Most of the book focuses on three or four of the productions Corman is most proud of. I would have preferred him spending additional time on his more obscure films. Teenage Caveman only gets a paragraph or two written about it.

A documentary would have been a more appropriate format for this material than a book. It would have been much shorter that way at the very least. Then again, Corman always had a knack for dragging things out in his films. Ever seen Swamp Diamonds?

The main theme of the book seems to be, "Yeah, Corman's films were bad, but he did pretty good for what he had." That doesn't take away the fact that they're bad films. Don't watch them unless you have a high threshold of pain.

First, this is really a 1990 book, and all information pertains to 1988 and prior. I enjoy exploitation films and this book adds to my enjoyment. Many films today are boring and darkly filmed. Just a bunch of special effects done on a computer. It's nice to know that many of Roger Corman films are still available. Maybe not at you local Wal Mart, but they do appear on TV occasionally. This book provides information to further my appreciation of what Roger Corman was able to accomplish during his life-time. Well through 1988, anyway.

Book Description

Imagine Roger Corman and John Waters crossed with Howard Stern--and you'll have an idea of the demented genius behind Troma studios, one of the oldest (and most successful) independent film studios in the world. Lloyd Kaufman's spirited, outrageous, no-holds-barred look at low-budget, guerilla filmmaking is truly an inspiration to young filmmakers, a delight for movie buffs, and an absolute must for Toxic Avenger fans everywhere. This is the true story of the moviemaking maverick who co-founded an independent studio twenty-five years ago in a humble broom closet...who used raw hamburger, Karo syrup blood, and Bromo-Seltzer vomit to create films of questionable artistic and moral value...who is responsible for a string of cult movie hits...who was the first to reject Madonna for a part...who defied the Hollywood system and slapped the face of the industry...and who built a B-movie empire filled with Chopper Chicks, Surf Nazis, Kabuki Cops, Nymphoid Barbarians, and a lone hero known as The Toxic Avenger.

5 out of 5 stars Into the mind of a truly independent Film director........2007-08-29

If you've ever watched a Troma film then you know what to expect from this book. Blood/gore, sex, nudity, head-crushings and more. Only in book form. What starts out as a how-to quickly breaks out into a great history of Troma films.
Lloyd Kaufman tells it like it is (in his mind that is.) But also comes across as genuinely passionate about what he does.
The only thing I can say is that if you've ever watched a Troma film and enjoyed it (even a tiny bit) then get this book.
Don't forget Lloyd's other book "Make Your Own Damn Movie!" and the Toxic Avenger Paperback.
Money spent on Troma is money spent on the things that make movies fun!

5 out of 5 stars The independent spirit.......2007-08-11

I'm not so much a fan of Troma's movies as I am a fan of Kaufman and Troma Studios themselves. Interesting book filled with Lloyd's humor.

5 out of 5 stars All I Need to Know about Troma I Learned from the Toxic Avenger.......2007-08-06

This book is a must have for all fans of the greatest independant film company of all time. This book takes you behind the scenes of Troma's back story and tells you everything you ever (never) wanted to know about troma and it's founder, the very generous Lloyd Kaufman. An excellent read from start to finish. Long live Toxie.

5 out of 5 stars All I Need to Know about Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger: Autobiography of Lloyd Kaufman.......2007-07-29

Troma film studio in New York City has been around for nearly 35 years now. It's founder and president Lloyd Kaufman has been there since day one and has oversought Troma's rise from obscurity to one of the more successful B movie studios in the country. Troma is the studio behind such cult classics as The Toxic Avenger films, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD, Tromeo and Juliet and the upcoming Poultrygeist. Through low-budget techniques, clever stories, over-the-top raunchiness and grotesque action Troma films have established themselves as the ultimate in renegade cinema.

Lloyd Kaufman's book "All I Need to Know about Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger" details his rise into filmmaking, the creation of Troma studios, the development of the Toxic Avenger film which put Troma on the map and general wit and whimsy about filmmaking in general. Kaufman's writing style is admittedly all over the place but it fits well with his offbeat style and humor as well as his approach to filmmaking. This book details such things as the origin of the Troma name, the process of making a low budget movie, and some wonderful details about how Troma pulls off gory effects. There's a wonderful chapter in which Kaufman details how they pulled off a scene from The Toxic Avenger in which a head is smashed by a car.

"All I Need to Know" is a great read not only for Troma fans but aspiring filmmakers as well. It details how somebody with outlandish ideas, little-to-no finance and not much experience rose to a fairly prominent career in film. Kaufman's story is hilarious, witty, at times grotesque but ultimately fairly inspiring. Highly recommended for both Troma fans and aspiring filmmakers. Kaufman's new book "Make Your Own Damn Movie" has also recently been published and is available through Amazon.

Book Description

A pioneer of independent cinema, Roger Corman is a fascinating study in contrasts. As the original King of the Exploitation Film, he has filled his movies with images of blood-sucking vampires, rampaging biker gangs, vigilante strippers, and abducting aliens, all while producing each of his four-hundred-plus films on a shoestring budget and making a profit on nearly every one. In the process, Corman became the role model for today’s independent filmmaker. This guru with a vision has also demonstrated an uncanny eye for talent, being among the first to recognize and employ the abilities of Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante, Ron Howard, John Sayles, and James Cameron to name but a few. Through interviews with eighty of Corman’s friends and associates and photographs, Beverly Gray takes you behind the cameras and into the heart of Cormanville for a firsthand, insider’s look at the man and the mogul, providing a compelling private and public perspective on this soft-spoken giant of the cinema.

5 out of 5 stars Kudos from Creating Characters author Marisa D'Vari.......2005-09-03

This fascinating "biography" is really a savvy "how to" book that belongs on the shelf of every screenwriter, aspiring producer, director, and development executive -- and everyone else who loves films and craves to know the secrets of Hollywood's most colorful mogul.

I found it fun to read as a realistic "behind the scenes" glimpse of what it takes to be a profitable mogul, such as the way Corman hired young cheap "promising" talent instead of going for experience. Directors fresh out of film school reading this book, for example, can get a good feel for the mindset and financial situation of producers they interview with. Screenwriters will learn how Corman and team (Gray had been his development executive) managed to write and produce so many successful films quickly.

Few books reveal the inner machinations of a successful producer so intimately. Gray, a screenwriting teacher at UCLA, has done a spectacular job of showcasing the life story of an intruiging man through more than eighty interviews and via her own experience.

5 out of 5 stars Corman Exposed.......2005-08-24

Wow! Talk about switching personalities! This amazing biographer can emit the style of the person she is writing about to really give you a flavor of the personality. And of course, she spent time working for him, so you are privy to more of a view. Written somewhat bruskly like Roger's personality, you really gain insight into his life and what made him the person he is. Contrast this book with Beverly's biography of Ron Howard and you see some of the exceptional talent of this lady. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars Roger Corman:.......2005-03-20

I have to agree with the other five-star reviews. "Roger Corman: Blood-Sucking Vampires, Flesh-Eating Cockroaches, and Driller Killers" is the best book on the subject, the subject being the most unique American studio head in film history.

Beverly Gray really paints a nuanced picture of Corman and never panders to the fans, the haters, or her old boss Corman himself. Though it's impossible to pull back the curtains entirely and see into a man's soul, Gray seems to have at least pulled back one side, giving us as much a glimpse as is possible without telepathy.

Storywise, Corman is, as always, fascinating, and Gray's perfectly detailed retelling of his story is the best yet written.

5 out of 5 stars Driller Killers and Roger Corman, Of Course.......2004-06-08

(...)

Gray's biography--fun as it is-- is more than a story about a man who is arguably one of Hollywood's most idiosyncratic moguls. It is a chronicle that parallels that of The Great Depression, World War II, the growth of the film industry and Los Angeles itself. We meet again celebrities we haven't thought about in years like the adorable dimpled Jon Davison, the memorable Vincent Price and even run across pop culture icons like Frank Gorshin.

Occasionally this book is burdened with glitz-town detail that only a dedicated film buff might adore but these moments are rare. Like a super hero, Corman--now 75 and still going--is resilient because he is multi-faceted. The same can be said for screenwriter cum UCLA instructor and journalist Beverly Gray. The two seem admirably paired in that way. Gray uses her many experiences and talents to tell the story of a man of many parts.

5 out of 5 stars Roger Corman: An Unauthorized Biography.......2003-11-12

Beverly Gray's superbly written, readable, and extensively documented biography of Roger Corman maintained my interest and gave me an understanding of his complex personality and career. The book also gives an insider's view into many Hollywood personalities, including a number of his disciples, cohorts, and acquaintances. The insightful prevailing theme of the book is Corman's internal struggle between his artistry and his bottom-line business concern, resulting in settling for small but memorable low-budget achievement rather than for potential professional greatness as a filmmaker. Ms. Gray draws on the personal insights she has gained on Corman from her almost ten years as his development executive. She also does a remarkable job in presenting the enormous multiplicity of his sources and story lines, including the anti-establishment themes of the 1960's and 1970's.

Best remembered for his 60s Vincent Price/Edgar Allan Poe films and other cult classics, Corman dabbed in anything for a quick buck. But his films were often highly innovative and exciting. Each is covered here in depth; a biography of Corman is included, along with bios of his stock players-all profusely illustrated.

Sadly, the author strings events in Corman's life in such a way that you are left not finding any interest in his life, which is sad as Corman has led such an interesting life. His own semi-autobiography was much more intersting and fun to read. The one good point of this book is the rundown of his movies, including intersting facts in the making of them as well as the listing of the major players in Corman's films. Not worth [the $]though.

    Book Description

I really never knew the full extent of his incredibly exciting life until I read these memoirs. The story of the rise and fall of Mother Earth is fodder for a highly dramatic movie. [italics] Roger Corman

Joel Rapp was born in Beverly Hills, surrounded by show-business legends. His father, Philip Rapp, created The Bickersons and Baby Snooks, his godmother was Fanny Brice and his godfather was Eddie Cantor. Joel inherited the writing gene and went on to write or co-write 16 motion pictures and over 200 sitcom episodes, among them Gilligan's Island, The Lucy Show, McHale's Navy, My Favorite Martian, The Patty Duke Show, The Joey Bishop Show, and The Donna Reed Show. In 1969 he quit his job as Vice-President in charge of Comedy Development at Universal Pictures and went into the indoor plant business, soon becoming known as "Mr. Mother Earth, Plant Man to the Stars," a persona in which he wrote 14 best-selling books on indoor gardening and cooking, spent eleven years with Regis & Kathie Lee as their TV gardener, and for almost ten years was heard weekly dispensing gardening advice on WABC radio in New York. This memoir is filled with marvelous anecdotes from both his Show-biz and Grow-biz careers - stories of his friendships with Lucille Ball, John Huston, Ruth Buzzi, Elizabeth Taylor, Don Rickles, Ernest Borgnine, Lenny Bruce, Clark Gable, Dinah Shore, and many, many more.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Hollywood Memoir.......2004-04-16

I must say I was very suprised by Joel Rapp's memoir, Radio, TV Mother Earth & Me. I bought it because I was a huge fan of his when he used to appear on Regis Philbin's TV program as the gardening expert, "Mr. Mother Earth". Little did I know that he had previoulsy led a really glamorous and exciting life as a TV and movie writer. Of all the Hollywood memoirs and books on Old Time Radio and Hollywood Trivia, this is certainly as good as any and better than most. Rapp, whose Godmother was Fanny Brice and whose godfather was Eddie Cantor has written the book in anecdotal style, beginning with his birth to comedy legend Phillip Rapp, creator of "The Bickersons" and "Baby Snooks" and his subsequent childhood surrounded by such legends as The Marx Brothers, George Jessel, Milton Berle and many more. The book then segues into Rapp's many years as a sitcom writer - "Gilligan's Island", "McHale's Navy", the Donna Reed Show - over 200 episodes and several movies for his close friend Roger Corman. Then on to his career as Mr. Mother Earth, an inspirational story of an idea and a store that created an indoor plant industry and eneded in something of a bizzare tragedy featuring his ex-wife and a young guru. Anyone who's a fan of Tinseltown trivia dating back into the 1930s radio and really amusing stories about the behind-the-camera life writing TV sitcoms during the "Golden Age of TV" will love this book, I promise. Five stars for sure!

    5 out of 5 stars WOW! I LOVED IT.......2004-04-15

I just finished reading radio tv mother earth and me by joel rapp and i have to say that i grew up in the los angeles of joel rapp. i knew many of the celebs he writes about in this terrific book.
i have read possibly 80% of the books about this era and by far this book is the best. joel writes from a great comedic background and first hand knowledge of the people of whom he writes..he has written for radio and tv and knows the good , the bad and the ugly and it's all portrayed in this book. i highly recommend it to anyone who loves hollywood or just loves gossip and interesting tales.

The accompanying book tells the story of each film's director through commentary and in-depth interviews, exploring individual approaches, and offering survival tips for the movie set and the classroom. Introduced by legendary independent filmmaker Roger Corman, here's a glimpse into the future of the moving image, a film festival no true cinemaphile can afford to miss.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book........2000-03-11

I go to a somewhat conservative boarding school and lent this book to one of my writing teachers, who previously had said that there is no way that a political poem can be heartfelt. This book proves that notion wrong. Normally when people think about politics, they only think about who is running for office, but there is so much more than that in this book. This book should be available in every library in both the poetry and political section. This is an inspiring book that speaks not only to the mind, but to the heart.

4 out of 5 stars Will Work for Peace is a triumph of poetic Davids........1999-10-30

As one of the poets featured in Will Work for Peace, one might expect me to be a bit biased, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Most poets work in a virtual vacuum, only tenuously connected to each other by the occasional workshop or shared membership in a 'poetry society'. When Brett Axel first approached me for a submission to an anthology he was considering, the names Marge Piercy, Lyn Lifshin, Moshe Bennaroch and so many others were abstractions to me as a fledgling poet. I knew these tremendous writers were 'out there' somewhere, beating down doors with their words and keeping a struggling artform alive. But to think that someday I would ever share a credit with these dynamic modern poets would be a pipe dream at best. It is through the sincere efforts of Brett Axel that many newer voices like mine have an extraordinary opportunity to appear with Pulitzer Prize winners and other poetic heavyweights. By way of an honest review, however, I will say this- not everything in this book will be to your particular liking. I myself came across some works that did not move me in the way the author may have intended. Some imagery can be raw and visceral, using shock value in place of craft at times. But to ignore those voices would be an even more shocking turn of events, so praise be to the editor for not sacrificing his vision to a senseless conformity. As Pete Seeger so aptly put it in his quote, trying to read all these poems at one time would be like trying 'to swallow Manhattan whole'. I say to you- buy this book, read this book, but understand that it's what you do after reading this book that will ultimately define who you could be. Poetry is alive and well, and lives in the blunt pages of Will Work for Peace.

        4 out of 5 stars Good work!.......1999-10-28

This book has been a long time coming. Brett Axel has really contributed to the poetry world in a way that is noticed, rather than swept into a corner. Many of the poems are good, some are great. Not all the poets are famous, but most of them contributed good work. I liked Amy Ouzoonian's and Brett's poems, as well as "Pinaud's Tonic" by Michael Pollick. I recommend reading that one. The only criticism I would have of the book is of the extreme scatalogical nature of some of the poems, which do not seem to fit with the theme of the anthology, and would, perhaps, be better in collections by that particular poet, rather than in such an anthology. But, overall, it is a great work.

        5 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up.......1999-09-20

Just amazing start to finish! I like the disregard for fame used in putting the book together. That great poems got in even if they were writtenby nobodys. Look at Roger Bonair-Agard's poem on page 74. Shortly after Will Work For Peace came out he won Slam Nationals, becoming Slam Champion of 1999, which will be getting him lots of offers. But Zeropanik Press didn't need to be told he was good by an award. They could tell by his writing! Good for them and good for all of us because Will Work For Peace is a literary milestone. It's a new standard for all future anthology editors to try to live up to. Thumbs up to Brett Axel and Thumbs up to Zeropanik Press for their guts and integrty.

        4 out of 5 stars Good reading.......1999-09-19

I liked this book. It has some of the best poetry I've ever seen in it. I especially liked the poems by Marge Piercy, Antler, Diane di Prima, and Susan Griffin, but all of it was good. I think there was only one or two that I didn't like at all and they were short. I'd give it 5 stars but the type was kind of small and I'd rather it be easier to read. My eyes aren't what they were when I was 30.
