Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This book is exactly what I ordered, came in perfect condition AND cheaper than the bookstore at school. Can't beat that! I wish all my school textbooks were that easy and inexpensive to acquire.

5 out of 5 stars complete and awesome.......2007-10-09

this is a very complete and up-to-date reference for both digital and analog recording. highly recommended for those seeking information on the technical side of audio engineering

4 out of 5 stars Good, thorough, and useful.......2007-10-01

Modern Recording Techniques was the required textbook for a class on live sound reinforcement that I am taking. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how readable and user friendly it is. The author does a good job in breaking subjects up into bite size (understandable) pieces that fit into the bigger scheme of things. For a textbook this is actually pretty straightforward and useful. If you are looking for a single source of information this is a good book, and the campanion website has added features so that you can hear examples and find out more. I definitely recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Another good one from Huber.......2007-09-24

I bought Huber's book on MIDI to be used as the text for a college class. When coupled with Modern Recording Techniques, the MIDI book made much more sense. Takes you from where MIDI left off and puts that knowledge to work. Again, written in a clear and concise manner, no frills, just good working and practical knowledge Buy both both his books.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite music books!.......2007-09-22

With the purchase of "Modern Chord Progressions" a few weeks ago, I completed collecting all of Ted Greene's amazing publications. His approach to writing may be considered a bit unorthodox, or dated, to some as they were originally written in the 1970's using less sophisticated publishing techniques (For example, all of the chord diagrams are filled in by hand and there are notes and arrows scribbled in by hand on the pages). The result is that they have a homespun feel to them and I actually really like it; it's refreshing, in contrast to most of the slicked out books offered these days, and perfectly complements his warm, genuine, and humorous personality which shines through in his writing.

I've learned, and continue to learn, so much from them as they contain a wealth of information that will, literally, take years to get through. The depth and detail with which he delves into applied music theory and harmony is incredible, so be forewarned. His books are not for the beginner, the timid, or the impatient, as each books require a great deal of perseverance to get through its myriad of examples, ranging from simple to extremely difficult, even for seasoned players. However, the effort is well worth it and you will grow so much as a musician, particularly in the all-important skill of voice leading, of which he was a master.

I was sad to learn that he passed in 2005 at only 58. However, his legacy and contributions to the field of music education live on in his wonderful books that I highly recommend for anyone seeking the ultimate teacher; someone who can help guide you along the incredibly rewarding journey to musical knowledge and mastery.

5 out of 5 stars Another great one from Ted Greene.......2007-09-13

I have owned Chord Chemistry for almost half life and just in recent months began to really appreciate Ted Greene's work. I highly suggest owning all of his books, maybe not Single note Soloing unless you are really serious but Modern Chord Progressions and Chord Chemistry are necessary. If you wnat to get better at guitar I suggest using the wealth of knowledge that Ted has in his books and on his web page. He is a legend and a kind man to put so much work into helping others learn music/guitar. I have said it before and will say it again, my most heartfelt thanks go out to Ted Greene, his family, all of his students, and anyone who helped with his writiings.

5 out of 5 stars Reason for studying music theory.......2007-05-30

Observing people who have demonstrated a fluency in their instrument, and, using this information to develop one's own ideas are the benefits of study.
Ted Greene is able to convey his passion for playing the guitar. He communicates his musicianship with his writings. Tab and other music notation accompany his chord studies. He is a highly recommended resource.

5 out of 5 stars Wow. This book will keep you busy for about a year. Maybe two........2007-05-13

I'm taking Jazz guitar lessons, and this book has helped me to peek ahead and see the dizzying number of permutations for all of the commonly used chords and voicings. There's no easy way to learn jazz, but if you work through this book, you will know a lot more by the time you finish it.

It's not a reference or a book of practice exercises. But if you want to slowly and steadily increase your knowledge of how Jazz works, get a decent teacher and learn one version of one of the progressions in this book every night.

4 out of 5 stars The perfect complement to "Chord Chemistry".......2006-02-13

Ted Greene continues the lessons taught in Chord Chemistry, treating chord progressions in the same exhaustive manner. He takes a progression (say, I-vi-ii-V7) and demonstrates a large number of chord combinations, many of which lend themselves to creating melodic lines. At first look, it appears to be nothing more than page after page of four-chord groupings, but as you work through this book (and it will take you some time), you realize that you're not just playing chords, you're making music, and before you know it, you find yourself escaping Ted's world and finding your own way around the fingerboard. This book, like its companion, is not particularly well laid-out; the chord diagrams are drawn in, and the text, though typeset rather than typed, still contains a few handwritten notes, but again, it was a product of its time (the early 1970's) and Ted can be a very funny person. Toward the end of the book, he has a handwritten note that says, "If you haven't cussed me out by now, you will after you try these." Don't expect to get through this book in a couple of weeks, but it will become as much a fixture in your library as Chord Chemistry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for learning independence.......2007-06-14

This book is designed with the jazz drummer in mind, but the exercises will help all players develop independence. The cymbal / hi-hat pattern is pretty consistent through the entire book book - the dotted 16th pattern that is common in be-bop. This means that the right hand is doing the same thing in pretty much every exercise, assuming you are right handed. Despite this, the exercises can be quite challenging, especially as the book progresses. To keep things interesting, alternate the sticking so that your non-dominant hand plays the cymbal pattern. The CDs are great and are helpful in understanding the trickier patterns. It's easy to see why this book is a standard among jazz drummers, but any drummer will benefit from mastering the patterns in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A classic book.......2005-09-25

This book helped shape the art of drumming, and continues to be a must-have for drummers. Chapin's book was used a favorite of Elvin, Tony, and tons of great drummers. This book isn't just for jazz drummers, though. Anyone looking to develop independence should check out this book. The independence it builds between the hands and feet is invaluable in any type of music that needs to groove. Even almost sixty years after its publication, this continues to be an amazing book.

5 out of 5 stars Best bebop practice book........2005-09-02

CDs make it very clear. It's better than Reed's Syncopation book in my opinion because you syncopate your bass drum foot in proper time with the hands. I still have a lot of work to do with it, so I gotta go!

5 out of 5 stars This music is really catchy!.......2007-07-26

I love Millie so I have wanted this for a long time. Sometimes I hesitate buying the music books for musicals. The arrangements can slaughter the real music sometimes. This one is really good though. It holds of lot of the good chords that you hear on the soundtrack. It is also really fun to sing a long with. I think this book is definately one of the best vocal books from a musical.

4 out of 5 stars Good V/G/P Book.......2007-03-24

A bit tough at times for intermediate players, but a good choice for those wanting the V/G/P parts for the show.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Amazing.......2006-01-25

I have seen many a musical, including Monty Python's Spamalot, the 25th Annual Putnam Co. Spelling Bee, Kiss Me Kate, Flower Drum Song, etc.. and I have to say that Millie is still and will probably always be my favorite. The music is just so fun. I don't know any other way to describe it. My personal favorite to listen to: the Speed Test. My personal favorite to sing along with: a toss up between I Turned the Corner and Gimme Gimme.

5 out of 5 stars I love Thoroughly Modern Millie!.......2004-11-02

I am in love with this musical!! The music is spectacular, the soundtrack is amazing and the movie is cute and spunky with the fabulous Julie Andrews. I was very excited when I found out that the sheet music to Thoroughly Modern Millie was available and I just had to get it!! If you like musicals or 1920's jazz, you will defiantely love this musical!

5 out of 5 stars Best Musical Ever!.......2004-04-25

Thoroughly Modern Millie is absolutely amazing! Any young actor, or anyone who has been living a smalltown life that is just a touch too small for their taste will be able to relate with Millie's character as she moves from a small town in Kansas to New York City to become rich and make it big. The music is fantastic, my personal favorites are "Only in New York", "long as I'm Here With You", and "Forget About The Boy", but I love them all. It's an incredible modern style musical, but with a nice flashback to the 1920s. If you love jazz, musicals, or just a great family comedy, this is the musical for you!

Book Description

The definitive text used for the time-honored Chord Scales course at Berklee College of Music, this book concentrates on scoring for every possible ensemble combination and teaches performers and arrangers how to add color, character and sophistication to chord voicings. Topics covered include: selecting appropriate harmonic tensions, understanding jazz harmony, overcoming harmonic ambiguity, experimenting with unusual combinations and non-traditional alignments, and many more. The accompanying CD includes performance examples of several different arranging techniques.

"A no-nonsense, meat and potatoes source of basic and not-so-basic information about everything relating to jazz writing - covers several courses worth of information."
- Kenny Werner
Pianist, Composer and Author of Effortless Mastery

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2007-07-17

Well, I used old russian sources before, and had a lot of problems with understanding of voicings. I just can say - this book is amazing! Very clear, logical, exercises... if you need to know about how to change basic chords to more complex, this book is your helper.

3 out of 5 stars A helpful book, though my experience with it was a little frustrating.......2007-03-21

The material presented is great, and will prove helpful in my study of arranging.

I did have one problem with the book however. In the introduction it states, "Because this book is intended for an expanded audience beyond students enrolled at Berklee, it includes substantial amounts of new text, many new musical examples, solutions to exercises and an accompanying CD."

Yes, it's all there except the solutions to the exercises and I am finding that frustrating. I contacted the publisher and got this reply:

Our Senior Editor clarified that the author meant the exercises begin with a measure of answers filled in for the student. They will clarify the "solutions to exercises" mention in the next printing of the book. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused you.

Anyways, I found this aspect frustrating and a hinderance to my getting the full benefit of this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in arranging........2006-12-24

This book is absolutely excellent. Like other Berklee Press books, it is easy-to-understand, and it offers exercises after each exercise to ensure that the lessons are etched in your brain through hands-on application. This book demystifies alot concerning voicings and chord scale theory, and I dare say that this and "Reharmonization Techniques" by Randy Felts should be the first books one reads before they read other fine arranging books by Sebesky, Riddle, Mancini and Grove. Many of those books focus more on style, with little if any explaination of jazz/chord theory. Once you get the essentials from this book, you'll gain way more from the other books.

This book starts with a lesson on chord theory, then simple 4 and 5 part voicings, as well as non-chord tone reharmonization. It then proceeds to tell you exactly how to write voicings in fourths, clusters, and upper-structure triads. In addition, it comes with a CD with recorded examples from each chapter of the book, so you can hear the subtle differences between the various voicings and effects.

This book is amazing!

One word of advice (speaking from my own initial misunderstanding): when reading the early chapter detailing "avoid notes", be sure to absorb and understand it as much as possible - it is the foundation upon which the later chapters on specialized voicings are built upon. This is the only part of the book where a decent grasp of jazz chord construction and tensions MAY be needed. In a nutshell, a note is avoided because: a.) It creates an nasty, dissonant interval with an essential chord tone, or b.) It creates an inteval with an essential chord tone that is uncharacteristic of that chord type (ie. a tritone in a Major 7th chord, etc.)

5 out of 5 stars Great book with great recording examples.......2005-05-16

Modern Jazz Voicings teaches how to write in fourths, clusters and uppers structure triads in an easy way. The best feature in this book is the recording examples. Any book that claims to be a great arranging book needs to have decent recording examples. The readers can easily digest the techniques since they are available to their ears. Also, the recordings not only include horn section, but they use different orchestration to illustrate the voicings explained. Berklee teaches this course called as Chord Scale Theory. I strongly recommend this book.

Book Description

Voted second on Modern Drummer's list of 25 Greatest Drum Books in 1993, Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer is one of the most versatile and practical works ever written for drums. Created exclusively to address syncopation, it has earned its place as a standard tool for teaching beginning drummers syncopation and strengthening reading skills. This book includes many accented eighths, dotted eighths and sixteenths, eighth-note triplets and sixteenth notes for extended solos. In addition, teachers can develop many of their own examples from it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2007-07-25

If you want to significantly improve your independence skills, buy this book and then find an instructor who can show you the more than 40 different ways to apply it to the drum set.

Alan Dawson used this book extensively with his students. Thankfully, one of his students has documented those 40+ ways. See "The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught by Alan Dawson" (Paperback), by author John Ramsay. Ramsay did a great job of identifying (and providing audio examples) of the numerous ways you can apply Syncopation.

An excellent precursor to this book is Jim Chapin's "Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer". That book will help you develop the basic independence you'll need to dive into Syncopation. Or if you already possess the ability to play the swing ostinato while playing swung eighth notes and triplets and sixteenth notes between your snare drum and bass drum, then you can likely dive right in.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal.......2007-03-29

Any drum teacher worth having will insist you buy this book. I bought this for my daughter who will be adding jazz drumming to her arsenal of rock drumming. This is one book all drummers should have

5 out of 5 stars All music students could benefit from this book........2007-01-16

I am currently using this book to teach my son basic drumming with a roland practice pad. It has been a fantastic help.

This book would be helpful to any beginning student learning to read music, not just drummers, since it so clearly breaks down rhythmic notation. The exercise progressions make a lot of sense, and there are quarter note guides that align the drum notes relative to the downbeat, which is very helpful for learning syncopation.

5 out of 5 stars If used properly, this book is a great asset!.......2006-02-25

I recommend this book for anyone interested in developing there reading and coordination skills for drumset. It also challenges you to use your imagination to adapt each page to your particular drumset needs.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic.......2002-04-02

Drum teachers worldwide use this book because its THE syncopation book.

'nuff said.

Product Description

Renowned Berklee College of Music faculty guitarist Jon Finn, combines his experience, education, and stylistic versatility in this eclectic series of lessons for aspiring rock guitarists. Jon's innovative approach is unique, fun, and challenging. The book/CD set and DVD both offer a well researched original take on the use of pentatonic scales in rock improvisation. Using his "Warp Refraction Principle" which takes into account the major third tuning interval between the second and third strings, Jon presents a series of five vertical patterns applied in two-string increments throughout the fretboard. The philosophy behind this project is to present concepts and techniques as a thought process rather than simply providing a reference manual.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST.......2007-10-06

Hands down this is the best method ever in breaking down the scale patterns and learning to master the fingerboard.

If your shakey on your scales or simply have trouble moving from postion to postion this book will show you the light.

Even if your quite comfortable with your scales you'll learn to see things in a new light. You'll be breaking old ruts and treading new territory after some serious study.

Even after all that you'll learn some new ways to use some old tricks like say, "Pentatonic Scales".

Jon Finn is a Master Teacher.
This is the Standard all Method Books Should Aspire to but few do. This was quite obviously written by someone who cares and someone with a strong desire to teach.

BTW He's a killer Guitar Player as Well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. Deeper into the pentatonics........2007-03-30

The pentatonics are absolutely essential for rock, blues/rock guitar. If you already know the 5 patterns of the major and minor pentatonic scale then this book would further increase your playing abilities.

This book takes the 5 patterns (boxes) of the pentatonic scale and dissects them. He illustrates a very intelligent way to use patterns derived from the pentatonics. The result is you can break out of the patterns that you usually play and expand your playing anywhere on the neck in any key.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-02-10

Wow, this book and DVD (not so much the cd for me) is really amazing, even for a beginner guitarist this put my soloing way above what i could do, 10x what i was able to do in 30 mins ago. I have tried many guitar methods and they all say the same thing and i was still confused about how to solo like my favorite guitarist and this book and dvd solved a lot for me, i also like it because its personal and funny, its not your standard how to learn ____ book. everything in here worked like a charm for me on the first try and blew my mind because of the simplicity. if your interested in actually playing nice melodies with your guitar and not just knowing theory about how guitar is played ( like other books), this is for you. this guy summed up in 2 mins what i have been trying to do for 3 weeks with my guitar teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Feel You are Stuck??? Get this book!!!.......2007-02-06

Living here in Boston has given me the opportunity to study with great Berklee Professors (Tomo Fujita & Don Lappin)... never Jon though. He's too busy. I've seen Jon play in pretty small bars here in Boston and always asked myself how he does it. This book explains it all.

This book is great for guitar players who are stuck in one position. I've been there and this book summarizes the fretboard geometry very well. Jon explains his approach to moving up and down the neck without being stuck in one position. It all makes sense.

It comes with a CD and DVD. Great Book, Great Player, Very Inspiring!!!

5 out of 5 stars See your fretboard in a totally new way.......2006-06-17

I just started going through this book, and it has changed the way I look at my fretboard. I don't know much about music theory, but this book explains things in a simple way that I could understand immediately. I highly recommend this book.

I'm can honestly say, this book is changing (the more I read) how I think about designing the systems I've been setting up for the last 17 years.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Written by the best........2007-07-29

Bob McCarthy did a great job. This book cover the black holes on sound systems design.
No matter how good audio guru you are, this is a MUST HAVE TOOL!.

5 out of 5 stars "how the paint hits the canvas".......2007-07-23

"That is what we thought then, this is what we know now."...to borrow a phrase Bob McCarthy has used. This book is about what we know now (or should know) thanks in large part to McCarthy's work in the field. This book doesn't rehash the information found in just about every other book involving sound and acoustics. It applies that knowledge along with technical data that has been collected over the course of his career to current real world technologies, systems and situations.

While various measurement tools have existed for quite some time, it has only been more recently that low cost solution (comparatively) have existed for analyzing our systems and their interaction with the environments we put them in. Now most anyone can afford to better understand what their systems are doing and why. Unfortunately the information that such tools provide is somewhat useless if you don't understand what it means, how to interpret it or how to apply it. This book doesn't teach you how to use such tools specifically so much as it addresses the reason the tools exist and how to use the information they provide to improve the listening experience and the efficiency of the systems that deliver the experience. McCarthy does this by sharing both the information that he has collected over the course of his career and most importantly, the knowledge that has been gained while compiling that information.

Besides the fact that McCarthy is in a unique position of having more experience in this area than maybe anybody else, he's also a hands-on guy who knows how to teach others. Anyone that has had an opportunity to attend one of his seminar courses knows he has a knack for making complex science understandable to almost anyone. I'm living proof of that and am happy to see that his knack has translated well to a very informative and interesting to read book. Detailed color graphics along with a few related comic strips help keep it all within reach.

If you use Smaart (or any other similar program), you will definitely get something out of this book whatever your experience level. Currently you won't find another book that brings this information all together with the real world experiences and insight as McCarthy has done, much less make it readable in an accessible fashion. While there maybe a handful of others who could possible write such a book with this type of applied knowledge, nobody else has. Reading this book will take you to a higher level of understanding of how sound system components react with one another as well as the acoustic environments that they exist within.

While McCarthy points out in the book that there used to be a division of art and science when it came to thinking how to evaluating sound system performance, the number of mixing engineers running Smaart @ theMIXsite is an indication that everyone is catching on that art and science go hand in hand. While Michelangelo was a artist, he studied science as well and it was the combination of his two disciplines that empowered him to create his many masterpieces.

Sound Systems: Design and Optimization is a study of how the paint hits the canvas and should be of interest to artist and engineers in the field of sound reinforcement.

5 out of 5 stars Bob has boiled vast science down to usable building blocks.......2007-05-21

This is a beautifully-written book. We have had the oportunity to work with Bob several times leading up to the release of the book. From pioneering measurement and analysis methods to identifying themes among system allignment scenerios most common in the field, Bob is thurough, complete, methodical, and passionate about the laws and facts of physics. This book captures the gammut of his scientific adventure, from nuts and bolts too deep to absorb in one reading, to rules-of-thumb and cheat-sheets that will give you instant insight into the invisible.

5 out of 5 stars The must have book for all sound engineers.......2007-03-17

This is the must have book for all sound engineers and system designers. From start to finish this book provides absolute detail from Bob's twenty years of experience in the field and he has effectively written the ultimate compendium for sound engineers dedicated to the subject of sound system design and optimization. It has excellent graphical representation of concepts and design. Highly recommended reading for novice to expert sound engineers.

My grandmother had this book at her house when I was a child. I taught myself how to play piano ( a little bit) with it. I am going to use it to teach my children.

3 out of 5 stars NOT for the earliest beginners.......2007-10-11

Despite what the title says, "A Book For The Earliest Beginner", I feel that it's not for the kids younger than 6 or 7. Requiring to read the music notes on the lines right from the beginning is too much for the kids who barely know alphabets. This book could be fine for older kids or for supplementing other courses. Try Alfred's books which I found much easier and gradual on very young children. If they are under 5, you could try Alfred's Prep Course.

i just started teaching piano and found this book. i love it and so does the student. the songs are in just the right order of difficulty and each has something new to learn. the duets are a lot of fun!!! i'm going to order the next book in this series very soon. i wish i had started with this book as a child. it is sooo cool. best wishes, Liz

A little more challenging for my 4 year old than expected. But shows we need to work at it more. He wants to originally just jump on the piano, but the practice without the piano was tought.
