If you're the kind of Beatle fan that love discussing not only about their lives and accomplishments, but also getting down to the technical aspects involved in the creation of their revolutionary music, this is A MUST ONE to have.
Reading it is a very enjoyable experience, especially when it comes down to the explanation of the tricks they had to do in the then pre-historic technology (but still, great) Abbey Road studio to generate and record the very special sonic wishes of the Beatles.
The book itself made me realize (this time for sure) that Geoff Emerick is, really, the co-producer of Revolver and Pepper. And that means a lot!
Vitally Important Perspective.......2007-10-09
I am about 50 pages from finishing this book, but one thing I want to point out is that Geoff Emerick does not fawn all over Paul at the expense of the other Beatles, as has been stated in previous reviews. Most people I know have their favorite Beatle, and Mr. Emerick is no exception. He makes it clear that Paul was always the most friendly and diplomatic of the four, and this coincides with what we already knew. Whereas the other Beatles may have had a tendency to put up buffers around themselves, Paul tended to be the outgoing and friendly one, and I'm sure that was a comfort to Emerick, who was trying to fit in with the world's most popular pop recording group. Just the same, and as proof of his objectivity, Emerick also points to the contributions made by Paul toward the overall friction that developed and led to the break-up of the Beatles. Emerick also eventually has very positive things to say about Lennon and Harrison, and illustrates the bridges and appreciations that developed between him and them. So, don't be put off by those reviews that criticize Emerick for being unduly biased. If you have listened intently to Beatles recordings, many of your conclusions will be confirmed by what Geoff Emerick has to say in this book. I think he did an amazing job, and if you are into uncovering new and interesting detail about the Beatles and how they worked in the studio, don't pass this one by.

Few accounts of history are more accurate than the first-hand kind, and that is what we have with Mr. Emerick's outstanding book. To his credit, this thoroughly British gentleman focuses on what he actually saw versus what is commonly known about the Beatles. His tone is respectful, but he does not shy away from saying what he thinks based on what he saw and how he was treated. Mr. Emerick went on to engineer and produce some great acts, which I hope are the subjects of a future book. And consider this: When I was 19, I was just learning to tie my shoes. He was engineering the "Revolver" album!
Class Act.......2007-09-17
I couldn't put this book down....what a fascinating first hand account of one of the most infuential musical experiences in modern history. I think you will find it particularly interesting if you write and record music, as Geoff's recollections are incredibly detailed and specific. It's truly unbelievable that he could remember so much of what happened in such picture perfect detail, and it is a lasting testament to critical and often unsung heroics of the worlds best audio engineers. Howard Massey did an excellent job helping Geoff make this material completely accessible to the lay person and fan as well. When I proposed to my wife in 2002 I wrote a symphonic piece and surprised her at Capitol Records in Studio A, where we recorded it live (I proposed afterwards). While they were mixing the music we took a tour of Capitol Records, and when we returned there was a gentleman in the studio playing the most beautiful music on the grand piano. We listened for awhile, then entered to studio and spoke with him for almost half an hour. What a lovely man, and what great music. That was Geoff Emerick. Perhaps someday we will hear you on the other side of the glass young man:)

If your interested in the other side of the Rock Life, this is a must read. I was and still am into Fleetwood Mac but Carol gave us a inside look at normal people who got projected into stardom and did the best they could.

I read the book BEFORE I read any reviews, as I wanted to approach the story with an open mind. I agree with the reviewers who believe the author portrays herself as a lamb among wolves. I will say I found Carol Ann Harris' story to be an easy, fast-paced read. I also think it is largely factual. It is not out of the realm of possibility to believe intense artistic types are moody, brooding and even ultimately abusive. However, with each incident of abusive behavior, she states she never saw it coming nor understood what provoked it. As the reader, even I did. Coupled with substance abuse, it was a recipe for disaster. A little more honesty and a lot less denial would have made for a much more credible account of her life with Lindsey Buckingham.

It's rare for me to find a book that I can honestly say I loved. This is one of those books. It is very well written and gives an honest look at life with a superstar band, Fleetwood Mac. I found it honest, moving and articulate. Bravo to Ms. Carol Ann Harris for the bravery and honesty that she shows in the telling of her life with the members of Fleetwood Mac. It's a great book.

I have to admit that I'm not particularly a Fleetwood Mac fan but I thought that it might make an interesting read. Boy, was I wrong. Even though the subjects of the book are probably fascinating people in their own right, Ms. Harris' account is insipid, cloying, probably exaggerated and undoubtedly the most badly written book I have read in a long time. Her excerpts of dialogue are laughable and hopefully, for the subjects' case, completely fabricated. I suppose Ms. Harris was going for dramatic affect when beginning to write this book, but it ends up to be a comic and juvenile display of what is supposed to pass for high drama. Ms. Harris should get over herself and maybe write a book that would be an honest and down to earth revelation of how a band interacts with each other and the people around them instead of this joke of a book. Good thing I only borrowed it from my local library. If I would have paid money for this thing, I would be even more disgusted if that was possible.

If your are as big a Dame Judi fan as I am this book is a must read or maybe, more accurately, a must see. It's sprinkled with family photos of Judi Dench, her late husband, Michael Williams and her daughter. Best of all it covers virtually all of her career from her early Royal Shakespearean Company days through all of her stage, movie and TV performances (up to but not including her latest film, "Notes on a Scandal.)
This book is literally presented as "scenes" with great photos and anecdotes about her many talented costars starting with her RSC performances - a virtual who's who of great British actors.
If you are an American like me and were originally introduced to Judi Dench through the limited offerings of her BBC TV show "As Time Goes By," this book gives you loads of insights into the breadth of her career. It has dozens of black and white photos and just as many brilliant color photos.
There are brief comments by Dame Judi about family photos and other personal moments that give one a bit of insight into her real life. She comes across as being very down to earth and her legendary sense of humor shines through. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because this isn't an actual autobiography by Dame Judi. It would have been nice to have had more material written by her.
All in all this is a great coffee table book for fans of one of the great actors of our times.

Since I named my son Graham after Bill, I thought perhaps I should know a little bit more about his life. I now now know alot more!
It is written in a narative style which makes it very easy to read. The stories are told by the people who were there, some happy, some sad ,some very funny.
If you are interested in the life of this man or even the history of modern day Rock and Roll Concert Production, how it started and evolved, I highly recomend this book.

This book is a little weird (to me) in concept but it works out really well in the end. The book goes from Bill's early days in Nazi Germany all the way to his death with no major stone left unturned. Lots of great stories with very little in the way of punches being pulled. I mean Bill really tells you what he is thinking. Very uncensored. Covers the drugs and the behind scenes stuff with no BS involved. Shows the guy for who he was, warts and all and lets him and the people he is talking about retort one another which I thought was weird in a good way. This book is of great interest to anyone who has probably gotten to this point in reading reviews. If you are interested in this type of subject then this book is a must.

This book is structured so that as Bill Graham comments on different times of his life, he allows the persons hes speaking of to comment in the next paragraph. This makes for some very interesting reading. Grham discusses his time in Korea and killing the enemy. This experience allows him to have an abundant amount of courage when it comes to dealing with band managers in the future. Bill discusses Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Zeppelin, the Stones, J Geils Band, Santana, the Who and all the tense dealings with each of these personalities. This book could have benefitted from better pictures of the bands. Thats my only critical comment.

I bought this book for my son who is now a father of three. It seems that he read the book as a child and challenged me to find a copy of it for him.I asked him why the book was important to him. He said that the book was a wonderful journey of childhood,and that it reminded him of his own journey. Intrigued, I read the book too. Written from a childs viewpoint In privincial France, it is full of adventure, wonder, humour and the intricacies of family life in a beautiful setting. Written from the heart, immensely readable by children and adults.

This is a delightful book that I had read many years ago in French, and I was very excited to read it in translation. Unfortunately, I found out after I ordered it that this book is out of print and is considered a "rare, print on demand" book. It took over 6 weeks to arrive, and I almost cancelled my order.
Amazon states that this book ships in 24 hours, but it took more like 1000 hours. If you have the patience to wait for it, the book will not disappoint you, but the slow delivery will. In the meantime, rent or buy the excellent movie version while you're waiting.

Marcel Pagnol narrates the story of his family living in Marseilles at the turn of the century, as they travel back and forth to their vacation home in the hills of Provence. The sweetness and loving attitude of his family is truely heartwarming, especially as described through the eyes of young Marcel. I had already seen the movie versions of both My Father's Glory and My Mother's Castle, which actually followed the book quite closely. I highly recommend them. Marcel gives the reader the pleasure of discovering, with him, the joys and mysteries of life, including exploring the hills of Provence, animals and nature, the pleasures of friendship, and the pride and love of family.

A wonderful autobiography by Marcel Pagnol telling of his early childhood with his family in the hills of Provence. Of school, his schoolteacher father, his delicate mother and his rambunctious brother. Of eventful journeys by rail, by foot and by cart from home to their vacation house. Of a joyful time spent exploring a countryside fragrant with wild herbs, full of insects to dissect, birds to hunt and caves to discover. Written in a prose that evokes the simplicity and seriousness of an inquisitive ten year old. And with a bittersweet ending that makes us immediately want to go back to previous pages where we were with him, his family, friends and the hills, tucked safely in summertime warmth and innocence.

The title is "The TRUTH is... My Life in LOVE and Music". A lot of the reviewers seem to think that Melissa has been too honest about her relationships, or is too focused on herself, or was unfair to Julie Cypher by detailing the road to the breakup in this book instead of just writing about her music. This is Melissa's AUTObiography, and as such is the truth of her life as she sees it, not anybody else's version. For most artists their emotional life is a huge part of their creativity! For an artist this powerful, that harsh personal life IS the most important part of the songwriting, and why the songs have so much impact and resonance. The life experience and love leads to the music. I read this book a few years back, and was also appalled that Melissa could put up with so much apparent acting out from Julie, while also understanding that it takes two to make a union. Having personally dealt with the kind of crazy-making emotional game playing that it seems was going on, I will especially applaud Melissa's courage for being honest about her own part in enabling the behavior (through not understanding it, through giving up her own power, for rationalizing, for covering up and making excuses, and for desperately holding on to someone who wanted and needed to leave), and thus how destructive it was for both of them.
This book helped open my eyes to how common this is. Abused kids turn into adults looking to heal the abuse by partnering with people who feel "like home", but who basically just further the abuse so familiar from childhood ("you looked like Father, you felt like Mother, my mind told my heart there is no other. And I gave you my soul and every ounce of control.."). Get two people with abusive childhood backgrounds together, and many people of all sexual orientations never make it out of that pattern, looking for healing and redemption in another person, when healing from abuse is an INSIDE job! They understand that something is wrong, but keep trying to placate and please the other person to "fix" the relationship that is mirroring their past, instead of realizing that one CAN'T fix anyone else, only oneself. Julie did Melissa a huge favor: she gave her the feelings that made the songs. ("I turned your dreams into lightning, ain't that enough? I held the world back for you, ain't that enough? I loved you past the point of dying, ain't that enough of me for you?!") Giving and giving and giving to the point of exhaustion only destroys the giver. ("My lover needs to seize, bring me to my knees"). It doesn't make a relationship work any better, but it gave Melissa the personal impetus to make incredible music that, in attempting to heal herself, can also help to heal others.
By being so honest, Melissa gives readers the gift of examples of dysfunctional family abuse with which they may be able to identify, and the resultant unhealthy relationships that can't work without understanding how our past affects our present. She finally figured a lot of this out. If she can do it, so can others in similar circumstances who might never have understood how dysfunctional their own relationships are. Gay or straight, it still hurts when a relationship isn't working despite one's best efforts. "Truth Of The Heart" among other, newer songs, is an example of the spiritual growth she achieved as a result of the pain. I think the book truly is a gift to any reader, fan or otherwise, who can empathize and identify with Melissa's life and see parallels in their own, and maybe get some big AhHa s and clues to eventually healing their own pain and becoming emotionally healthy and wise. As for the voice and editing, it was collaboratively written, and needed to be accessible in tone. If I want great literature, I go elsewhere. For healing though, it's the honest story that helps the most.

I guess I can now say that I understand why her music is so fantastic. It's raw and you can feel her emotions pouring out in each and every one. This book covers most of the basics of her life and of course details. You find out about all the heart breaking, losses, and happy moments of her life and how she came to be the person she is today.
If your a fan of her music, you have to pick up this book to fully understand why her music touches your soul.

This is a great book! It is an easy to read inspirational book that takes you on a tour of her life through her family, passions, traumas, setbacks and accomplishments. Sometimes it is comforting to know that we are not alone in this journey and reading about "celebrities" that had rough times too, triumphed in the end.

This book was fabulous - it's hard to put it down !! If you love Melissa, you have to read this book right away ... you really get a whole new perspective of what her music is all about. Since the book ended, Melissa could write (and SHOULD) write another on her new relationship, new babies and her cancer story.

Not great literature, and definitely the author writes probably a bit too much about himself, especially his contributions to making J. Cash the success he was, but a fun read. A lot of inside kind of info. Johnny Cash fans will really enjoy the book. Marshall Grant will be at the Johnny Cash Flower Picking Festival in Starkville, Mississippi on November 3 to discuss his book.

I've known Marshall all my life.
I love him and Etta very much.
I enjoyed part of the book. I do think he should have stuck with what he KNEW though.
After he "left" Dad's organization, the story should have picked up after he and Dad started speaking again.
The second hand information from "other employees and people close to Dad" was not fact. It was gossip, and I was very surprised at the "information" he was fed from people that were working for Dad at the time!

I was not only working for Dad at the time, but around him all the time. I found myself shocked at some of the
things Marshall was told. I'm sad that people Dad trusted in his office, home and on the road were so back stabbing.
I always knew it, but this book made me cry at the traitors he paid very well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The account of the Sun Records era and the origin of the Johnny Cash sound was well written and, despite what other reviewers have stated, consistent with other written accounts.
Johnny Cash's drug use during the 1960s was well documented. There is no question in my mind that Marshall Grant, June Carter, and Vivian Cash all loved Cash and wanted to free him from the drug demons that threatened to destroy him.
For most of the 1960s, the drug use transcended Cash's recording and performing career. Cash cleaned up his life (with, apparently, a few relapses), and his career underwent a resurgence. Sadly, in the early 1980's the drugs seemed to re-emerge as an issue and strain a lot of key relationships in his life. Marshall Grant was one of the casualties of that era.
To his credit, Grant chose not to write a tell-all book as retribution while Cash was alive. It was also good to hear that Cash and Grant were able to reconcile and resume their friendship in the end.
I did not consider the book self-serving, as other reviewers have stated. It seemed to me to be a series of anecdotes from a friend. It was an easy read and I would recommend it highly as a biography of Cash.

For all Cash fans. We forget that we all have human faults when someone dies. Grant has exposed Johnny's demons that exist in all of us. This, in no way, makes Cash less a great human being but shows the world and Johnny's fans that he had many of the same weaknesses we all do. You will not regreat reading. I attended a show in 1964 when Cash did not appear and Tex Ritter played for over an hour vs. his 20 minute set and then announced that Cash was "ill" and would not be appearing. Johnny came back a month later and our original tickets were honored for a second show that was terrific!
An insiders look at the touring Johnny Cash.......2007-07-30
While many reviewers note that Marshall Grant's writing may not be as scintillating as they had hoped, it is important the reader take this book for what it is - an insider's look at touring with Johnny Cash written by the bass player in the Tennessee Two. I found this book very insightful and easy to digest. If you are not a big Cash fan, you may not be able to get through some of the writers' stylistic nuances. However, if you are a true Cash fan, buy this book. It will be well worth your dollars and time. Thanks to Marshall for providing this for us.

This book is very much like John Leguizamo's show's - introspective and intersting. While I didn't think it was too hard-hitting against his fellow thespians, I enjoyed an inside perspective into the real lives of Hollywood actors. I also really enjoyed that Leguizamo shared his failures and weaknesses. It was clever, funny, and sad all at once. A true John Leguizamo experience.

I can't complain at all about this book. John Leguizamo is hilarious. I felt like I was sitting front row at one of his stand up comedies. He talks about his struggles and some 'beefs' he has with actors I certainly never knew about. I also admired the way he was completely honest about every role he played and every person he worked with.

I am a huge John Leguizamo fan. My son introduced me to him because of his love for Leguizamo's short lived TV show House of Buggin. In addition to his films, we have seen him perform Freak on Broadway and John Leguizam Live before it was renamed Sexaholic. With a background like that, I found this autobiography to be very revealing and entertaining. However, as a long time librarian I am very familiar with how people react to book titles when they are unfamiliar with the author or the subject matter. And just as Leguizamo acknowledges bad career choices and mistakes that he has made in his career to date, I am afraid that he will have to eventually accept the fact that his unfortunate title choice has repelled rather than attracted many potential readers. By doing so, he has missed a golden opportunity to use this entertaining vehicle to expand his fan base.

I bought this book for my husband for his birthday -He is not much of a reader -We really like John Leguizamo as an actor and saw him on David Letterman promoting the book -It sounded so interesting and my husband was like -I want to read that -I was kind of surprised because he rarely ever reads. He loves the book -He's even got me reading it -John did a great job -If you like John and movies -You will love this book -It's got a lot of dirt on celebrities -But done in a playful way -Even some of the names have been changed -I would recommend this book -Excellent work John!

honest thoughts on american evangelicalism.......2007-08-11
I think there's something in all of us that loves to know what other people think of us. Growing up in the `90s under the "christian music only" rule, and a (former) collection of over 300 christian rock cds, I found this aspect of my life under scrutiny from the "outside." And I loved it.
In Body Piercing Saved My Life, Beaujon offers a very candid look at the christian rock music industry. I have to say that I learned a ton about the music industry in general by reading this book. Seeing the behind the scenes issues, the financial policies, the tensions, etc. was something new for me.
The book focuses more on people than anything, and I think Beaujon realizes that you can't really learn much from caricatures or stereotypes. (I guess that's why he wrote the book). This, for me, was incredibly interesting, as he basically related a series of interviews, relationships with figures in the scene, and how they all fit into the big picture.
I can't say that I found much to disagree with in the book. I resonated strongly with David Bazan's confusion and then rejection with the charismatic background he was raised in. I very much agreed with Beaujon's analysis of modern praise music as "more than a little sexual and a tad uncomfortable if you're sitting next to an attractive person who's been overcome by the Spirit." (159). He pointed out the similarities between the way Deadheads and now the current jamband scene experience their music, and the current "worship experience." I thought I was the only one who saw that! As one who has had deep experiences in both scenes, I thought his analysis was right on and matched my experience perfectly. He also points out many of the quirks and foibles in modern american evangelicalism, and I couldn't really argue with any of them.
I think I share the same opinions with Beaujon when it comes to american evangelicalism and its music. For me, I've rejected it in favor of a bare-bones, bible based faith which rejects most of the trappings of this sub-culture (some would label me a "fundamentalist," though (like we all say) "it's much more nuanced than that!") When I "got convicted" about my music, it wasn't just the Grateful Dead that got tossed out, it was my entire music collection, all 300+ christian rock cds included. Beaujon, in contrast, finds himself identifying with those christians who reject the american evangelical subculture in favor of the world's culture, and an emphasis on a social gospel.
I found this fascinating: "As I left, [Jae] Choi asked me if I was a Christian, and when I said no, he handed me a tract. I was on the plane home before I realized that I'd been working on this project for six months, and it was the first time anyone had tried to evangelize me." (168)
It's apparent to me, also, that Beaujon doesn't understand the gospel: "To me, the message of the Gospel is love one another, look out for the less fortunate, and try to walk gently on the earth." (271). This is, in fact, the "gospel" that many american evangelicals are currently preaching. To me, the message of the gospel is this: even though I am a wretched sinner who knows that I deserve hell and have no possible way of saving myself from it, God Himself took the initiative, became a man, took my sin upon Himself, and received the punishment I deserve. The way is clear for a restored relationship with the Creator of the universe! That's good news!
I loved Beaujon's writing style. It was downright art at times. I also loved his transparency, and felt that this was a pretty unbiased, straightforward account of the scene. I didn't feel any hatred or malice or desire to make anyone look stupid; (if anyone looks stupid in this book, they brought it upon themselves). Overall, I wouldn't say that I necessarily gained a whole lot by reading this, but I found it fascinating and enjoyable to read.
Body Piercing Didn't Save Beaujon's Life .......2007-07-09
I enjoyed reading the book, but I didn't agree with much of what the author had to say. Beaujon inserted a lot of opinion into this book and it shows in some ways he had an agenda even though he probably would deny that. He highlighted Christians who swear, drink and carouse. He hung out with David Bazan and seems to feel most comfortably with him more than anyone else in the book.
The book is informative and shows that he did research, but still he wrote that Yellowcard started as a Christian band that crossed over to the mainstream. He wrote transcripts of interviews in the book, which is kind of lazy. He revealed all the "off the record" comments by the people he interviewed. Not only that but some parts of the book dragged on because he lacked a clear focus. It becomes apparent that Beaujon wrote the book and didn't have an editor who knew enough about Christian Rock or Christianity to correct some of the mistakes he made.
The bottom line is that this book is better than "Why Should the Devil Have All The Good Music?" But that's not saying much. The book should have been called "A Spin Magazine Writer's Take On Christian Rock".
Great Perspective.......2007-07-05
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a Christ follower, and it was interesting reading about the history of Christian rock. Of greater interest to me was looking at things from Andrew's perspecitve on Christianity as a self-described non-Christian (not anti-Christian). Beyond his perspectve on Christianity and Christian music, my favorite thing was the occasional glimpse into his own personal journey and thoughts.
Inside the Religious Machine.......2006-10-03
As a Christian who has refused to disengage my brain in order to embrace religion, I am encouraged that an agnostic writer would be willing to tackle the wooly subject of Christian rock and roll. Is such music the real deal? Is it all about money? Is it even necessary?
Beaujon approaches his subject with honesty, insight, and not even a smidgen of mean-spiritedness. He admits that the secular media has some biases toward this sector of music, but he himself explores the fringes and the heart of the matter with eyes open and intellect intact. "Body Piercing Saved My Life" is an admirable job of reporting, on any level. Not only does the author take us through the history of modern Christian music, he explores the trends and theologies that infiltrate it. He pulls no punches, showing the frustrations of those within the industry--regarding lifestyles, business practices, and censorship--but he also demonstrates the rare willingness of an outsider to enjoy and even be moved by the music. Admittedly, these moments of enjoyment come infrequently for him (for understandable reasons).
I was one of those church kids, back in the eighties, who loved rock music and wanted to be "with it." With parents who were pastors, this meant I had to rummage through the garbage pile of Christian music and hope to find gold flakes (no double meaning intended) in the stream of heavenly wannnabes. Of course, as the years passed, I realized that life could not be compartmentalized into simple boxes--despite the attempts of many preachers to do so. Although I've still managed to hold onto a belief in a relationship with Jesus, I've been discouraged by the industry's attempts to cover up scandals and to placate the masses with mediocre "worship" music. To hear Beaujon address these subjects is to be reminded that Christian rock and Christianity itself should be more than a phenomenon--they should be reflections of the love of Christ for those inside and out of the religious machine.
Andrew, thank you for "risking" a year in the trenches of American Churchianity. I would've loved more focus on fringe bands (such as Underoath, As I Lay Dying, As Cities Burn, Project 86), but you did a remarkably comprehensive job. Your candid, yet mostly kind, words should be a challenge for thought and action on the part of all those involved.
A VIEW FROM THE OUTSIDE.......2006-09-30
I read this book after I read "Faith, God, and Rock and Roll" by Joseph. I liked that book very much, but this one was a bit better. As an outsider, Beaujon takes a relatively objective look at Christian music and what it tries to do. However, just because he's an outsider doesn't mean he is not sympathetic to these musicians and what they're trying to do. I believe that it comes through in the book that Beaujon is sympathetic to any musician who takes his/her job seriously. I think Beaujon has a certain respect for anyone who is passionate about what they do.
That said, the book is a sometimes fascinating (David Bazan), sometimes frustrating (music executives, blah blah) read. Personally, I think the topic of whether Christian musicians should make music only for Christians or for the "outside market" is a fascinating one. I see both sides of the argument and I think it's a good argument (how about debate"?) to have. This book is a nice addition to the growing literature which asks tough questions of Christians concerning their (sometimes) insular musical genre.
