Book Description
Jerry Rice has been called the best pro football player ever. In spite of Rice’s legendary gridiron skills, or even his ability to transform himself into an instant ballroom-dance prodigy on ABC’s hit TV series Dancing with the Stars, the surprising fact is, a guy like Jerry Rice is made and not just born. In Go Long! Rice shares the inspirational lessons and empowering practices that have helped him attain success, both on the football field and off. Through the ups and downs of Rice’s life and incomparable career, we discover how self-motivation, determination, and humility are the keys to achievement and true fulfillment.
It’s been a long journey for Jerry Rice, from his childhood in Starkville, Mississippi, to a certain berth in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As a kid, he was always working toward something, even if he wasn’t sure what it was. Rice honed his hand-eye coordination by catching airborne bricks tossed by his siblings while on the job with their bricklayer father, and he ran–everywhere. From these humble beginnings, Rice blazed a path to greatness in college and the NFL–a trip that was fueled by tireless effort and belief in a few simple principles, among them that achievement is a voyage, not a destination; that modesty and perseverance, not talent, are what determine how far you will go; and that everyone should strive to be a role model. Rice even demonstrates these rules in action, breaking down the greatest games from his stellar career.
Go Long! is an inspiring book by a living sports legend. More than that, however, it is the story of how Jerry Rice awakened the champion within, illustration how we can unlock the greatness within ourselves.

thumbs up.......2007-07-09
A quick read. Nothing too heavy. I'm a huge Niners fan and it was good to hear Rice talk about his career. The drive he had while playing and training is inspiring.
OK Typical Sports Bio.......2007-06-30
I enjoyed the book, but do not expect great writing or insights. This is one of those obligatory autobios that sports figures feel they have to write for their fans. I'd have liked to read more about Rice's growing up in MS. His coments on various fellow sprts stars was fun to reqd. ( He doesn't believe Barry Bonds either ). Quick read. Solid three stars.
Great book!.......2007-05-12
this was a great book, i rarly read but when i found out Jerry wrote a book I knew i'd have to have it. It was a very quick read, took me only 2 weeks to finish. It's also opened my eyes to the NFL and the way it works. One of the best books ive read
Good Story for the Non-Football Fan.......2007-04-01
Not every football memoir/autbio will be like Jerry Kramer's DISTANT REPLAY or have a subject as complex as Jim Brown. It was painful to hear Rice read his book (Audio CD) because he's not a natural reader mor speaker, but one can appreciate the path he laid for future players to emulate. I think this book is more geared towards the non-fan as opposed to the historian, NFL fan or Jerry Rice fan. I do think Jerry could've improved his reading skills for the CD edition or have someone else read the book, but it's a good story. As long as the book served its purpose, I can't complain.
- This review is for the Unabridged CD edition.
Go Long is a winner, all about life!.......2007-03-30
Excellent book, easy read. Very frank and honest dialogue produces a very refreshing look at the character and
makeup of NFL great Jerry Rice. He possesses "old school" values, rare for todays athletes and his humble
approach and its origins are clearly defined in his upbringing. Would highly recommend it for parents and players
of any sport as well as non-players as it explores more than the world of athletics and promotes a great
work ethic.

Book Description
Wil Wheaton has never been one to take the conventional path to success. Despite early stardom through his childhood role in the motion picture "Stand By Me", and growing up on television as Wesley Crusher on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Wil left Hollywood in pursuit of happiness, purpose, and a viable means of paying the bills. In the oddest of places, Topeka, Kansas, Wil discovered that despite his claims to fame, he was at heart Just a Geek. In this, his newest book, Wil shares his deeply personal and difficult journey to find himself. You'll understand the rigors, and joys, of Wil's rediscovering of himself, as he comes to terms with what it means to be famous, or, ironically, famous for once having been famous. Writing with honesty and disarming humanity, Wil touches on the frustrations associated with his acting career, his inability to distance himself from Ensign Crusher in the public's eyes, the launch of his incredibly successful web site, wilwheaton.net, and the joy he's found in writing. Through all of this, Wil shares the ups and downs he encountered along the journey, along with the support and love he discovered from his friends and family. The stories in Just a Geek include: - Wil's plunge from teen star to struggling actor - Discovering the joys of HTML, blogging, Linux, and web design - The struggle between Wesley Crusher, Starfleet ensign, and Wil Wheaton, author and blogger - Gut-wrenching reactions to the 9-11 disaster - Moving tales of Wil's relationships with his wife, step-children, and extended family - The transition from a B-list actor to an A-list author Wil Wheaton--celebrity, blogger, and geek--writes for the geek in all of us. Engaging, witty, and pleasantly self-deprecating, Just a Geek will surprise you and make you laugh.

Just Another Geek.......2007-10-18
Wil is a great writer, learning to write about what he knows. This book provides a fascinating insight in the behind-the-scenes of Wil's life and of Star Trek TNG.
Not Just A Geek, but an Author, too!.......2007-08-29
Like Mr. Wheaton's other book, I was very pleased with this one as well. I could relate to the "geekness", being a recovering geek myself.
Wonderful book.
A Peek Inside..........2007-05-13
I bought this book because I started reading Wil Wheaton's blog and some of the articles he's been writing for various internet sites and found them to be very funny. So, I thought I was going to get a funny, behind-the-scenes look at Star Trek:TNG. I didn't get that. What I got was excerps from his blog over the past 5 years or so. And it really wasn't all that funny. I actually cried (yes, cried) a lot more than I laughed. But you know what? I wasn't disappointed. It turns out to be a peek inside WW's head and his journey from seeing himself as a washed up actor to being happy being a writer, family man, and "Just a Geek." It's really a much more human story that the average person can relate to (I know I did!) instead of being a gossip-fest.
Wheaton writes in an easy, conversational style sprinkled with interesting, occasionally brilliant descriptive turns of phrase. Is he the next F. Scott Fitzgerald? Probably not. But it is an easy, enjoyable read about a guy coming to grips with his life taking a big left turn that he didn't intend to take. Even if you don't know Wil Wheaton from Adam and have never seen a Star Trek episode in your life, you will enjoy this book, because it's not about being a Trekker. It's about being a human.
Please don't shut up, Wesley!.......2007-04-01
"Just a Geek" by Wil Wheaton is an incredible book. Wil has proven himself not only a gifted actor, but a gifted writer. The book is raw and revealing. You feel every emotion right along with him. Tears well up when he does not land that role. You feel his love for his wife and stepsons. You experience the joy he finds in doing Star Trek conventions, meeting fans, and writing his blog. You will roll with laughter at the fireworks story. You see Wil, not as an untouchable Hollywood actor, but a real man, complete with all the trials, tribulations, and joys that all of us experience. My only complaint is with the foul language. This is not a book for kids, unless it is filtered by a parent, but it is a must-read, especially for the Gen Xer and Trekkie.
Hollywood is missing out, but at least we have this book.......2007-02-24
I laughed, I cried, but more than that, Wil Wheaton made me feel part of his life and shared struggles I had also experienced.
Snubbed by Hollywood execs since he quit Star Trek his audience has had to follow him via his blog or his live comedy performances. It's a big loss to the movie industry but our gain as it is unlikely he would've written such a brutally honest account of his transition from struggling actor to writer if he had still been caught up in the Hollywood madness.
I can't wait for the next book.
Customer Reviews:
cute for the aspiring ballerina.......2007-02-12
My almost 3 year old loves anything to do with princesses and ballerinas--hence this book. I've seen better drawings, colors, but it's ok---not all books can be as colorful as RoliePolieOlie books & Little Einsteins.
Nice change.
Great book for little ballerinas and beginers in reading!.......2002-11-16
Nina, Nina Star Ballerina is a Great book for little girls it is an awesome way to get them to start to read.
I'm 12 and I read long thick novels but when I was little my mom read me this book and I fell in love with it because I thought Jane O'Connor(the author)had writen the book for me! I thought this because I was taking ballet like Nina (the main character of this story)and my name is Nina too!!
After my mom read me this book the first time I wanted to be more independent and start reading it by myself. And so I did.
I suggest that all or most mothers should have their daughters try to read this. I think that they would like it if they like dance.
Great for beginners.......2000-02-17
My 5 year-old daughter and my 3 year-old son both enjoyed my reading this book to them. My son was glad there was a boy in the dance class and my daughter was empathetic about the story line. We played the recognize-one-word game while reading. The kids learned the word "mom" and were able to see other words by memory, too. I would reccommend this book to first readers also since the words are simple and easy to read.
It's my grand daughter's favorite.......1999-05-08
This book illustrates how one might get trapped in an untruthful situation. Nina's friends think she is the star of the show when she is only one of several dancers portraying stars. She allows them to think she's the star because she likes the attention. When there is the possibility that one of her friends will attend the performance, Nina has second thought about the deception. She considers getting excused from the show because of a feigned sore leg. Then, confessing to her mother, she gets the good advice to tell her friend the truth. This is accepted and the dance performance goes on with her friend and her mother in the audience.
My grand daughter is facing her first dance recital and is very nervous about it. This book fascinated her, I read it to her three times, and hopefully she will now participate in her recital.

Book Description
Wil Wheaton--blogger, geek, and Star Trek: The Next Generation's Wesley Crusher--gives us five short-but-true tales of life in the so-called Space Age in Dancing Barefoot. With a true geek's unflinching honesty, Wil examines life, love, the web, and the absurdities of Hollywood in these compelling autobiographical narratives. Based on pieces first published in Wil's hugely popular blog, www.wilwheaton.net, the stories in Dancing Barefoot chronicle a teen TV star's journey to maturity and self-acceptance. Far from the usual celebrity tell-all, Dancing Barefoot is a vivid account of one man's version of that universal story, the search for self. If you've ever fallen in love, wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a Star Trek convention, or thought hard about the meaning of life, you'll find a kindred soul in the pages of Dancing Barefoot. In the process of uncovering his true geeky self, Wil Wheaton speaks to the inner geek in all of us. The stories: Houses in Motion - Memories fill the emptiness left within a childhood home, and saying goodbye brings them to life. Ready Or Not Here I Come - A game of hide-n-seek with the kids works as a time machine, taking Wil on a tour of the hiding and seeking of years gone by. Inferno - Two 15-year-olds pass in the night leaving behind pleasant memories and a perfumed Car Wars Deluxe Edition Box Set. We Close Our Eyes - A few beautiful moments spent dancing in the rain. The Saga of SpongeBob VegasPants - A story of love, hate, laughter and the acceptance of all things Trek.

Wil Wheaton: Author!!.......2007-08-29
I was very pleased with this book. Excellent writing, but it leaves me wanting more.
entertaining, thoughtful, and quite inspiring.......2006-04-17
Dancing Barefoot is one of those books that as your reading, you take a step back and say, "oh my god I totally understand this! This was me."
The book is a collection of stories that Wil had posted on his blog and compiled together. The stories are very inspiring and Wil shows his emotions in one of the most effective ways that humans do: through his writing. I was very touched after having read Dancing Barefoot and even inspirted enough to do some writing of my own.
If you're considering whether or not you want to purchase Wheaton's book, just read his blog and within 10 minutes of reading some of his entries your mind will have been set yourself.
I loved it, and look forward to Wil's next novel.
MUST READ.......2006-03-13
Whether you are a Star Trek Fan or not, this book is worth reading. As Wil tells his stories, you feel each and every emotion. After you finish the book, you a yearning for more, so go and pick up "Just a Geek". Enjoy it- I sure did!
really short.......2005-10-25
The book is much shorter than I expected. I really enjoyed the stories though.
Slender book of essays a strong beginning.......2005-09-10
(...) Tracing the loss of a favorite aunt, the awkwardness of teenage attraction, moments of stepfatherhood joy in a game of hide-and-seek, and a cold walk in the rain in the heat of newlywed bliss, the first four stories are well-written, a little too saccharine, and gave me pause to wonder what I'd spent my money on. The last story, "The Saga of SpongeBob Vegas Pants, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Star Trek" made me laugh out loud in public. It is clearly the strongest entry in the book, and indeed, takes up the majority of the slender text (about 70 of its 110 pages). Wheaton's sarcasm, vulnerability, and natural agility with the written word shine through the last story, and thoroughly justifies the purchase of this book. Whether you are a Star Trek fan (which I am not, but have friends who are...), a voracious reader of memoirs or aspiring memoirist (admitted), a Gen-Xer on the precipice of your 30s (which I am), or a fan of Wheaton's Blog (which I've become), I recommend "Dancing Barefoot."

For true fans.......2005-03-17
This book will be appreciated by true T&D addicts, although switching back and forth between their two voices made it seem mildly disjointed.Details of the unglamourous side of life on the road gave a realistic perspective. Not bad,but it somehow left me wanting more.A great deal of trivial details without alot of the substance such a book could have had.Fans will enjoy it,casual readers may not...
Finally, we find out what happened at the 1994 Olympics!.......1997-03-07

Book Description
The shocking and inspirational saga of Margaret Werner and her miraculous survival in the Siberian death camps of Stalinist Russia.
Between 1930 and 1932, Henry Ford sent 450 of his Detroit employees plus their families to live in Gorky, Russia, to operate a new manufacturing facility. This is the true story of one of those families–Carl and Elisabeth Werner and their young daughter Margaret–and their terrifying life in Russia under brutal dictator Joseph Stalin.
Margaret was seventeen when her father was arrested on trumped-up charges of treason. Heartbroken and afraid, she and her mother were left to withstand the hardships of life under the oppressive Soviet state, an existence marked by poverty, starvation, and fear. Refusing to comply with the Socialist agenda, Margaret was ultimately sentenced to ten years of hard labor in Stalin’s Gulag.
Filth, malnutrition, and despair accompanied merciless physical labor. Yet in the midst of inhumane conditions came glimpses of hope and love as Margaret came to realize her dependence upon “the grace, favor, and protection of an unseen God.”
In all, it would be thirty long years before Margaret returned to kiss the ground of home. Of all the Americans who made this virtually unknown journey–ultimately spending years in Siberian death camps–Margaret Werner was the only woman who lived to tell about it.
Written by her son, Karl Tobien, Dancing Under the Red Star is Margaret’s unforgettable true story: an inspiring chronicle of faith, defiance, and personal triumph

Dancing Under the Red Star.......2007-10-11
Amazing, sad, eye-opening story that should be a required reading in our public schools. Everyone should be exposed to the realities of what can happen when the world tuns a blind eye to evil.
Interesting and informative!.......2007-01-17
I learned a lot about the Russian political system from reading this book. The author did a very good job telling his mother's story. This is a good book to pass on to others.
Great read, an emotional tale, not really for history buffs........2006-09-10
This was an excellent book for those wishing to learn the basics of survival in Stalin's Gulag system. It is an account of the life of Ms. Werner and her relationships with her friends, family and fellow camp members, guards, etc. What it is not is a history of Ford's work in the USSR. Those hoping to learn the details of the Gorky plant and Ford's involvement with it, as I was, will find virtually no detail of this in the book. The writting is basic and reads like a well written high school essay. There is a clear born-again tone the the post by the author, but it does not detract from the overall experience, even for an athiest. All said it is an excellent addition to the library of those studying the era.
NOTE: I read the ARC, not the final published copy.
Should Be a Best Seller.......2006-08-27
Shocking little-known story about Detroit's General Motors making a deal with Soviet Union's paranoid dictator Stalin (1879-1953) to ship over American auto experts after WW2 to help Stalin establish one of his failed ideas: a Russian automobile plant. Signing up for what they deem an adventure, is an idealistic man from Detroit and his wife & teenage daughter.
Shortly thereafter the Detroit family, and other American families, as well, are branded - without evidence - traitors, and sent to Stalin's Death Camps - the Gulag - as was Solzhenitsyn. This is one of those true stories that is more horrifying than fiction.
In Stalin's frightening, paranoid society, friend betrays friend to stay alive. The reader is given a close-up glimpse of Stalin's reign of terror, under which he implemented poorly-thought-out ideas that resulted in millions of deaths, such as collectivization of farms, that resulted in loss of crop production and famines where millions died of starvation. Under Stalin, a staggering 26 million individuals lost their lives.
Remarkably, the mother and daughter, sent to bone-chilling Siberia, survive every hardship imaginable. Poignant scenes include meeting the wife of composer Sergei Prokofiev (she was also denounced as a traitor, a bitterly unhappy woman) - and the reunion of the heroine and her mother after a separation of months in, of all places, a smelly latrine. A small miracle is that the heroine gave birth successfully to a son, who was kept alive in Siberia.
The heroine's story is told by this same son, after his mother's death by natural causes in America at age 75. He candidly admits that he had once been a bitter man, but that telling his mother's story has changed him. When his mother finally arrived back on her native soil three decades after her imprisonment, she kissed the ground of America, after glimpsing the Statue of Liberty upon her return. This thrilling page-turner is recommended for anyone from high school on up.
Excellent Story!.......2006-07-20
I found the previous review quite interesting as Dancing Under the Red Star was never called a memoir. To quote the cover, it is "The extraordinary STORY of Margaret Werner, the only American woman to survive Stalin's Gulag." The author's choice to write in first person made his mother's story very real to the reader.
I also found it interesting that the last reviewer was disappointed claiming that the author's only purpose was to "proselytize his faith." Obviously the point of the story was missed. It was Margaret Werner and her mother Elizabeth's faith that enabled them to endure the horrendous ordeal. Repeatedly the hand of God moved in their lives in miraculous ways. Margaret's son is recounting his family history, where God played a substantial role in their survival.
Excellent book revealing the darker side of the Stalin regime.

quotations for the soul... .......2007-09-07
"The words that enlighten the soul are more precious than jewels" - Hazrat Khan. Quotes, poems, bits of philosphy, East, West, saints, sinners, poets, authors all contribute to this inspiring collection of quotes. Some simple, some pretty deep, all are beautiful thoughts. A friend once gave it to me and years later I still reference it.
"When the heart weeps for what it has lost, the spirit laughs for what it has found". Sufi aphorism.
A remarkable compilation that can be read again & again.......1998-10-12
A book which delivers the title. This is a conjugation of truths derived from different religions, philosophies, poets and authors, all of which provide fantastic and moving insight into the human experience through verse, proverbs and various scripture. It achieves this without being didactic, self-absorbed, secular or trivial. A book you can cherish.

TAP! BY RUSTY E. FRANK.......2006-08-20
I total am ejoying this book. Being a dancer my self it is wonderful reading about all the dancers during my time. Thank you so much Mr. Frank.
get this, think about the rest later.......2001-09-25
when this book used to be out of print, legions of ambitous tap dancers - including myself - were searching used-book stores across the country to find a copy. i know some who ended up copying every single page in the lincoln center library. the reason is very simple: there is no other book on the subject that even comes close to gathering this much information on the history of tap dancing. even though historians may argue about some details, the book is usually considered the standard by all the tap pros i know and whoever reads it will have a good understanding of where the art form comes from, what the important issues are, what stages of development tap dancing went through, who the important dancers of different times and styles were, and what the characteristics of different styles and approaches in tap dance are. if you want to know about the history of tap: get this book. otherwise you will find yourself digging through the shelves of rare book stores when it is out of print again.
Great teaching tool.......2000-12-01
This is a fantastic book! In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I made my college advanced tap class read it, as well. They were truly inspired by this book and have gained a renewed since of determination as far as entering the field of "commercial entertainment" with an emphasis on tap. Each person has a truly unique account of how it was back in the day, when people actually went to "tap clubs" just like we would go to dance clubs nowadays. What an experience to see this exciting time through their eyes.
Not just for tap dancers!.......2000-01-05
This book is wonderfully written with first-hand accounts about show business during the first half of the 1900's. It is not just for tap dancers, but for anyone interested in getting a feel for the way of life during that period. The amount of information I learned about vaudeville, movie musicals, and even black history in America is much more than I expected when I picked up this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone!
Read!!!!.......1999-06-29
I just dont understand why tap dancing is disapearing it is the most intruiging type of dance i have ever taken and am still taking...hoping to go pro someday since i am only a teen. To make a long story short this book and it's amazing Gregory Hines has inspired me to go for my dreams, and to keep tap dancing alive.

Another failure.......2003-07-11
This boxed set is jsut as mediocre as the first, recycling more stories from American Girl magazine and re-editing them for a book format. The highlights of this set are Samantha Saves the Wedding and Molly and the Movie Star. Felicity has more quarrels with Annabelle Cole in the Felicity story, Josefina gets frustrated with the piano in the Josefina story, Kirsten gets jealous of a new girl in the Kirsten story, and Addy wishes that she were a boy because she feels that she is loosing her brother. These short stories, which for the most part I have stopped collecting (by the way I collect American Girls things as a hobby) are lacking when compared to several other items in the American Girls Collection series. These could have been better. I recommend getting them at a library--but you might hacve a time finding one that has the whole set, since several libraries have quit buying the American Girls Short Stories, at least where I am from.
Wonderful taste of history for young girls!.......2000-07-11
My almost seven year old daughter has been enjoying AG books on tape and has had at least 20 read to her. Our favorites are the short stories though, because they can be read in one sitting and they have great project ideas geared to the age group. We bought the newest series on July 1 and have read four out of six of the short stories. These books will become favorites for sure, just as the first short story set books are still read over and over again. Thanks for the intro to history in an appropriate format for the early grades.
Awesome.......2000-06-20
