Customer Reviews:
interesting and full-covered biography.......2007-03-09
this is a quite full and interestnig biography concerning the first years of the PJ history also relating to the beginning of this (and other) seattle bands, which is of particular value to grunge fans i think, because this is now part of the rock n roll history!
the book gave me a human description of the band's mates and i was interested to read about the abruzzese period and the way it ended.
so i think the PJ story written in this book is a good description of the direction the band took since 1996 til today. i was also interested about the vedder's personal life chapters, but eventually i am not sure whether it is a good idea revealing really personal facts, but anyway it helps understanding vedder personnality , phylosophy and music.
Enjoy it, it is easy to read, and excuse my english faults.
A horrible book from a mediocre writer.......2007-02-14
Save your money and do a Google and Wikipedia search for Vedder, and you'll end up with much better quality information than this book. It's obviously a sensationalistic attempt at cashing in on Pearl Jam.
The writer manages to almost completely ignore the band's music (and, for that matter, the band, since this is a book about all the dirt she could dig up on Vedder). She managed to interview only people carrying grudges for the band or the singer (I wonder why...): think Dave Abrusezze, the drummer that got fired, and Vedder's stepfather, who obviously have their own take on things. When the book is not whining from the perspective of these people, it paints stick figures of everyone in the band except Vedder.
The book can only be called accurate if you consider one-sidedness accurate.
Anyone with a working brain and more than 30 minutes exposure to Pearl Jam's music will be able to figure this book out for what it is: yet another hanger-on's attempt to make money off somebody else's work.
If you must read this book, borrow it from a friend, or at least buy it used.
A definite must have for any pearl jam fan.......2006-11-11
I first found it anti-vedder but while I kept on reading I just got to realize it was well based on facts with no intention of getting worse. It's interesting that while it demolished my perceptions and the perfect image I had about Pearl Jam the book has empowered my interest about the band and boosted my fanatism well beyond expected. I realized that this band isn't anything of what I believed. I carried lots of misbeliefs that this book washes away in style.
The section about Eddie vedder's life was incredible. I found it kind of boring at the beggining but before it was finished it became my favorite.
A seemingly balanced prespective on the band and it's leader.......2006-07-30
I've just recently become interested in the music of Pearl Jam by way of an article I read on their bassist Jeff Ament in an old copy of Bass Player magazine. I then purchased the Rearview Mirror CD and surprisingly as a 43 yr old guy have been hooked ever since and wanted to learn more about the band. I thought this was an interesting read in that it shows how much these artists suffered through considerable loss and hurt and persevered to make their dreams a reality. While some may see Neely's portrayal of Vedder as highlighting his hypocrisy I think her portrayal aptly shows how his difficult upbringing has created a complex young man who predictably eschewed authority and demonstrated some integrity albeit in a ruthless business. I honestly pained for this man as I read her portrayal of his childhood and the circumstances of how he learned who his real father was and his complex relationship or lack thereof with his adopted father. Like many, a child of divorce in the 70-80s, I identified with the circumstances and it reminded me of how I felt and how these feeling drove me to express myself in music as well. I was however dismayed at the way the band apparently treated their drummer Dave A.. However, the fact that Dave was the only "previous" memeber of the band to contribute to the book does call into question the impartiality of the content in this regard. I would have like to have also learned more about the other members of the band who each give PJ their unique style and magic for it is the whole that makes a band not just one individual. By the way, this is a band that really shines and emotes in live performances. I can't stop playing this stuff.
A great early history of PJ.......2006-03-15
As a fan I found this book a very interesting read. Great details and stories go into each member's history and the formation of pearl jam. Excellent detail on the first few albums.
You should keep in mind that this is written from the point of view of a Rolling Stone magazine author so it is sure to have a slightly different angle on things than a fan. It was released just after Yield and therefore has a very very quick summary of the few years before it.
Of course pearl jam is still going strong and could probably warrant a second volume of this book. But this is a great look back at the early days of Pearl Jam.

Contemporary music photography suffers from a lack of unhindered contact between photographer and subject. The musicians prefer to control the process and, while one understands that impulse (would you want to see your mug turn up in print after a bad hair day?), the result is often an excess of carefully crafted but soulless images that have everything to do with publicity photography and nothing to do with photojournalism. But with Place/Date, it's readily apparent that lensmen Charles Peterson and Lance Mercer spent plenty of unsupervised time in the company of Pearl Jam before assembling this handsome, rewarding volume. The twosome collect images dating back to the group's 1991 grunge salad days and up to 1998. Kinetic shots of the band in action (Eddie leaping, Eddie sprawling, Eddie crawling) are interspersed with backstage candids of the quintet playing dominos, napping, and killing time. In keeping with the group's egalitarian ethos, the lens is frequently turned away from Vedder and company toward PJ's fans, with telling results. --Steven Stolder
Book Description
The first official book done in association with the media-shy band that redefined the musical sound of the 1990s, Pearl Jam: Place/Date captures the raw intensity, behind-the-scenes comraderie, and devoted fan phenomenon of today's most unconventional supergroup. Having sold over 30 million albums since its triumphant 1991 debut 10, Pearl Jam brought the hard-edged, estranged and oftentimes angry sound of Seattle to the musical forefront. They pioneered a movement in music and culture that quickly became known as grunge. Imitators followed, and the band could have quickly lost touch with its fans and unpretentious ideals and become simply a money-making celebrity group. Instead, Eddie Vedder and the members of Pearl Jam took on the establishment: challenging Ticketmaster's control over concert venues and ticket prices and refusing media any access to the band--even through music videos--during the peak of their success. Pearl Jam's disappearance from media and from traditional touring has intensified the loyalty of its fans and has refocused the band's attention on its original musical center. Despite the lack of advertising and recent shifts in musical trends, Pearl Jam concerts repeatedly sell out within hours for the hundreds of thousands who remain devoted to a group that continues to uphold its musical and political integrity. Allowed access to the concerts, jam sessions, and private moments of Pearl Jam's members, photographers Charles Peterson and Lance Mercer provide a heretofore unseen record of the Pearl Jam experience for new and diehard fans alike.
Customer Reviews:
Just Once!!!!!.......2002-03-24
I like Pearl Jam. Really.
And I like this book. Really.
It's just that ... well ... let me be honest here: great photography, interesting camera angles, and the B&W/color shifts are stellar and create a lasting effect; I just wish that once --just once -- the focus could shift to the viewpoint(s) of every OTHER member of the band besides Ed Vedder (the only time you really see it is in the photos of the fans -- for that, the book loses a star. Sorry, folks!). Maybe a sequel would be nice -- call it "Those OTHER Guys" and make them the subject matter.
Still, this is a book worth having. Very recommended.
Perfect for Hardcore Fans.......2001-08-01
Pearl Jam has made a career of hiding from the press and keeping a deliberately low profile. But they are known for giving goodies to their hardcore fans. I would have thought that PJ never allowed anyone to take pictures of them, but apparently Mercer and Peterson have had free range to take any pictures they wanted with the band on tour. There are only a few "publicity" shots where the band is clearly posing for the camera. The majority are onstage action shots and candid moments which provide a lot of insight into the band's personalities. There are also many great shots of the fans. Each of the four core members seems to be showcased equally, with some shots of their various temporary drummers. The funnest aspect of the book is watching the guys' image change over time - from overdressed, long-haired alt-rockers in the early days to their current scruffy low-maintenance "regular guy" look.
Beautiful Photography, Unparalleled Emotion.......2001-04-09
Mercer and Peterson have collaborated with the band to offer a glimpse into the on and off-stage lives of Stone, Jeff, Ed, Mike, and (insert drummers' names here). The photographs alternate between B&W and color and integrate a variety of vantage points, camera angles, and photography techniques, not to mention an intruiging array of subjects, including drummer Jack Iron's son, Vedder's wife Beth Leibling, and many captures of fans. It is a lovely addition to the library of any Jammer.
wonderful pictures.......2000-09-06
This book is great for any Pearl Jam fan. It has various pictures of all the band members. I got my copy of this book free from Best Buy when I bought the latest Pearl Jam album Binaural (that was back in May). However, if you buy it it would be worth the money. The book's photos are creative and they are from different years. Great photography. It would be an awesome gift for a Pearl Jam fan.
Rising above hardships, alas a chronicle of a band we love.......1999-10-01
We have all, in time, waited for Pearl Jam, just for once, to bow to the demands of being a rock and roll band. Eddie Vedder, after Kurt Cobain died, assumed this role, although reluctantly. So many photographs, so many magazines chronicled the band's struggles--from the zenith of their power to the nadir of their performance, to sheer obscurity. Peterson and Mercer's photographs embodied the character, the emotion, the mood, the camarederie of a band that started as a seed, then as a plant and then as a towering tree. One endearing scene is the bond between Mike and Eddie onstage, in which the former was having the hard time to connect in ``those days,'' from the ``VS.'' to ``Vitalogy'' days. The singer, albeit the melodrama and almost Shakespearean life, became an enigma to Mike and to others. And this I applaud Place/Date for its work. And how many times the band members change their hairstyle, their musical style, Place/Date remains as one proof that Pearl Jam is band and not a one-man show.

Book Description
In this detailed biography, Martin Clark traces Pearl Jam's meteoric rise, the band's reaction to popular acclaim, its triumphs at the MTV and Grammy awards, the notorious rift with Nirvana, and its creative rebirth following the release of the critically acclaimed album No Code. Giving particular emphasis on the band's enigmatic leader, Eddie Vedder, the book brings to life a tumultuous career, chronicling Pearl Jam through success, scandal, band tensions, personnel changes, and substance abuse. This revised and updated edition features many intriguing — and hitherto untold — facts and anecdotes, in addition to a comprehensive discography.
Customer Reviews:
This book's best feature is its subject matter..........2003-10-06
I was excited to get this and start reading - hopefully find some insight into some things that I didn't previously know about one of favorite bands. Unfortunately, however, this book was little more than regurgitated facts easily found on the internet and quotes from other articles. I picked up a few unknown tidbits here and there, but nothing extraordinary. The author took a rather detached stance and didn't really ever allow the reader to know whether or not he actually LIKED Pearl Jam. The drummer history and early band history were both fairly interesting, but you can find out everything in those sections over at lukin.com. The most fun part of reading the book was coming across references to specific shows, then running to my bootleg folder to listen to the show. It's always cool to have some background to put the thing you're listening to in perspective. Except that, even this, is easily available on the web at Five Horizons. It's a decent "refresher-course", but I was looking for something that, when I was done, would make me want other people to read it. When I finished this, I was, instead, just rather ho-hum about the whole thing.
but... PEARL JAM ROCKS
Looks good but not accurate........2001-07-16
I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan so I read this book a while ago hoping for some insight into the band. I was sadly dissappointed. While the book has lots of nice photographs, it's hardly worth reading. This book is full of misquotes and distorted facts. If you really like Pearl Jam I suggest you read the book "Five Against One" instead. It's a lot longer but well worth your time.
Chronicles the Rise of an Underdog.......2000-10-01
A slim 160-page volume packed with black and white photos chronicling the rise of an underdog staying power of a band Kurt Cobain once criticized (and later reversed his sentiments) for creating corporate grunge. Through public disagreements with Nirvana, boycotts of Ticketmaster, and changing band members, Clarke covers all the bases.
Fantastic!.......2000-05-03
Best Pearl Jam book ever written! This book covers a wide base of what the members did before PJ, and shows how the band has evolved over the years.
Eddie really is fragile.......1999-08-04
I have read this and find it very good. I am a pearl jam fan and recommend this book to any and all who are interested in Vedder and crew. He's the last true anti-hero.

Book Description
Vitalogy, first published in 1899 and expanded and updated in 1930, was the most popular and influential home health encyclopedia of its day. In the 1990s it inspired a major album by the rock band Pearl Jam. We have selected and reproduced four chapters from the 1930 edition. Also included is the die-cut, full color manikin of the human head found in the original.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating look into a different world........2003-05-30
I have a very fragile 1900 edition of Vitalogy and it's unfortunate that it is so old because it's great fun to look at. I used to look at it as a kid and marvel at the strange admonitions it contains, such as warning against chewing gum since spitting your saliva is hazardous to your health. Of course, I don't know of many people that chew gum and spit saliva at the same time, but it's pretty fun stuff to read. There's also the warning against marrying someone with narrow nostrils, as it "indicates small lungs." How about "Red whiskered men should marry brunettes, but not blondes, the color of the whiskers being more determinate of the temperament than the hair"? There are all kinds of remedies offered including the prevention of baldness (use French or German green soap--whatever that is). Definitely a book for the coffee table.
Wacky Insight Into Turn of the Century (ixx to xx) medicine.......2002-04-12
This book, nowadays, might be very funny to doctors, in the same way an Archie comic book would be funny to a great writer, but its a written record that gives us a clear insight into the customs and minds of modern ixx century medicine.
Apart from that this book can also be alittle frightening, for its impressive to see what the great minds of the age considered diseases or remedies.
This edition is a very concise version of the original and deals only with a couple of chapters.
Even if you dont care about medicine, its a very fun book to read. You will be surprised to what was considered the source of vitalogy and long life in 1899.
Nostalgia.......2001-01-31
Vitalogy is a book originally released in 1899 and originally contained over 1,000 pages. Today's paperback edition is four selected chapters from the publisher (severely edited). It is an interesting look at home remedies at the turn of the century, and is linked to the 1994 Pearl Jam album of the same name.
Nothing to do with Pearl Jam.......2001-01-26
Written in the late 1800's (supposedly), Vitalogy is a tongue in cheek book by today's standards. Vitalogy was written by E.H Ruddock, who was a literary version of a traveling salesman. This leads one to believe that the ideals in this book are tall tales, with the author fully knowing that he was lying to the reader. The basic vibe for a person reading Vitalogy nowadays is that the book is "b.s.", but serves as an interesting look at how America wanted innocense so badly that they created societal propaganda such as Vitalogy in order to force citizens to live as society wanted them to. (Example: find the photo of a young man before and after self-stimulation. The "after" photo is doctored so badly that it is ridiculous to the point of laughter). Vitalogy is the book Ed Vedder from Pearl Jam borrowed excerpts from for liner notes on the Vitalogy album. This book, on the contrary, has NOTHING TO DO WITH PEARL JAM. Nontheless, the book is interesting and I give it 4 stars, just because it has a gritty, nostalgic feel to it. Pearl Jam fan or not, the nostalgia and feel of this book is very interesting and should be read by those who could find interest in such societal"propaganda" that Vitalogy brings forth. I was disappointed at first, due to the fact I honestly thought it was a Pearl Jam book. I later picked up Vitalogy from time to time and started to enjoy it for reasons already described.
carry him with you all the time in the case you get lost.......1999-01-09
i believe that this book is not only a home book but is also a life book ...it teaches you how to live.

'Note for Note' Transcription? I think not.......2001-01-26
Frankly, this book is somewhat of a joke to me (and should be to anyone who isn't completely tone deaf). There are omitted riffs and all sorts of inconsistencies throughout the entire book. Somehow the transcriber managed to BS his way through every song, completely overlooking the fact that Stone Gossard employs several open and altered tunings. Some of the leads aren't too bad, but there are some transcribed in completely the wrong position (IE 'Even Flow', which is transcribed in E when it should be D). And what's up with that transcription to 'Deep'? What an incoherent mess! Don't waste your money. This TAB book isn't worth the paper it's printed on.
I wish I was a Neutron bomb for once I could go off. . . . ........2000-05-10
So speaks the bard, and so it is written. Pearl Jam is truly one of the greatest band of the 90's if not the century. This book helps give the band the honor they desevre buy going into detail on one of their first and greatest albumbs; TEN. Buy this book, and you won't be dissapointed. Peace.
Absolutely incredible.......1999-08-22
This book is very accurate, now I can play, and sing along to pearl jam with no hesitation. Brilliant
Pearl Jam music!.......1999-07-01
Good for some of the notes missed by sounding out, some lyrics are incorrect. Overall pretty good.
The definitive answers to what? they are playing..........1998-11-27
I bought this because I spend lots of time listening to Pearl Jam, and lots of time trying to learn how to play songs (especially PJ!). After buying this book and playing along with the album for a couple of hours I realised it was missing some! stuff. In Evenflow, it's missing a riff or two, and in Alive, its missing the riff right before Ed sings "oh, I, I, I'm still alive...". And, the authors of the book left out a whole lot of Alive, come to think of it. Lots of little cool things Mike and Stone do are missing, and its up to me, the inexperienced, to figure it out. And (SIGH) they make it rather hard to figure who's doing what. Instead of clearly demarcating the roles of the guitarists, they rather mishmash it all together. All in all, regardless of the many slight mistakes, this book ...still... gave me a giant step forward in my understanding of how to play Ten. Which is a very good thing!

Pearl Jam's Story... Cliffnotes, w/ Great Pictures.......2003-02-10
"The story of Pearl Jam" by Brad Morrel, is less a reading book than a photo album. The "history" contained within appears to be just a summary of the highlights in the actual history of PJ up to the release of "No Code." ... I think that most of the info here are cliffnotes from other more insightful and developed books like "None to Fragile" or "Five Against One."
But on the other hand, the pictures contained within are colour, bigger than a letter sized paper, and spread out through 64 pages mostly from the pre-ten, ten, vs, and pre-vitalogy era.
If you are a fan, and do not like reading long books, this is an ideal book for you.
If you are a fan, and dont want text, but want some great early PJ pics, this is a good book for you. And if you want text, get one of the books i mentioned above.
In my case, i own this book for the pictures and "none too fragile" for the text. This suits me well.

The most substantial of the many books that have been released about Pearl Jam in the past two years.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible info on the band.......2001-01-02
filled with inaccuracies, seemed like a quick way to make a buck. will satisfy only the fan who has to constantly read about them, even if the info is wrong. reading this after "five against one" is almost comical. do not waste hard earned money.
Well Documented Early Years of Pearl Jam.......1999-03-16
This book was really interesting if you are a Pearl Jam maniac such as myself. It has a lot of history involved including the Green River and Mother Love Bone eras. If you want to find out the amazing story of how Pearl Jam came to be, this is a definite read.
Great Book On The Early Years Of Pearl Jam and Before.......1997-12-11
This is a wondeful book for PJ fans. It concentrates on the events before Pearl Jam with Green River and Mother Love Bone. A must

There's nothing better than PJ live.......2001-08-01
Pearl Jam Live is all the basics, from Eddie's days of gas station attendant, to how they felt about Cobain's early passing, to Mother Love Bone. It is filled with good and interesting information, and overflowing with unique pictures of live performances. Although written early-on in their career, this 34 page must-have is worth looking into if you are a hardcore fan. Also includes large poster (but it's only of Eddie, not the whole group).
