Book Description

One diver, after a seemingly brief period below the surface, discovers that his gas supply has run perilously low. Another, paralyzed, bobs helplessly on the surface, and when a poorly trained divemaster attempts rescue, things go from bad to worse. Two other divers, fascinated by the bountiful undersea life of the Caribbean, fail to notice that a powerful current is sweeping them rapidly away from their unattended boat.

These are just a few of the true stories you’ll find in Diver Down, most of them involving diver error and resulting in serious injury or death. Each of these tales is accompanied by an in-depth analysis of what went wrong and how you can recognize, avoid, and respond to similar underwater calamities. This unique survival guide explores the gamut of diving situations, including cave and wreck diving, deep-water dives, river and drift diving, decompression sickness, and much more. It shows you how to prevent tragic mishaps through:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Every Diver should read this Book.......2007-09-21

One of the best diving books I have read. Makes you re-think how you dive.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must read for divers of any skill level.......2007-08-23

If you have logged only a handful of dives or enough to fill a log book, this book is a must read. Learning from other peoples' mistakes could quite possibly save your life, and this book is full of practical, experiential knowledge that will most certainly help you to become a better diver; more aware of the risks involved and how to avoid them. It's also a good intro for those who might be interested in learning to dive, although it quite possibly might scare folks away from the sport. Probably won't be letting my wife read it either.

5 out of 5 stars Jaws ain't got nothin' on this book.......2007-07-21

If you are a diver, or are planning to be a diver, this is a great book and a quick read. Just don't expect "Gone With The Wind."

It's basically a collection of true stories of problems encountered, why they became problems and how they could have been prevented. And, many of these problems were due to pure stupidity.

4 out of 5 stars Learn from accidents and learn about diving techniques.......2007-06-27

Includes phisical and psicological aspects that lead to accidents in diving activities. While explaining real cases, the author also provides additional information about general diving topics. Very interesting to read. You find that you have had similar situations that have not lead to accidents but they could so.

5 out of 5 stars Great Informative Diving Book - A must have!.......2007-05-15

Michael Ange writes a column in the Scuba Diving magazine called Life Lessons. For any level scuba diver, this column describes various levels of scuba diving accidents. Many of which can be avoided, but also some that cannot. The analysis of each unique situation gives us information on how not to become complacent about scuba diving.

This book has several case reports of diving accidents. Many of them result in hospitalizations or even death. This book truly will open your eyes upon scuba diving. It is a great sport and very safe, but only as safe as you prepare.

I would recommend this book to any level scuba diver so that we can all be better prepared divers.

Book Description

Journey with scuba instructor Michael Zinsley as he dives his way through 16 countries, rubbing shoulders with the locals and mixing underwater adventure with after-hours escapades.

The Rapture of the Deep is fast paced and rich in content, consisting of humorous anecdotes, insightful histories, underwater descriptions, and terrifying close calls. The diving stories relate events seen once in a thousand dives. Native cultures are revealed with an awareness that only someone who has lived in those lands can describe. The book's lighter side is the combination of underwater adventure mixed with after-hours escapades (imagine Cousteau extending his documentaries to include closing time in the local bars). The descriptions of coral reef life are written in a way that non-diving readers will be as intrigued as the experts.

Featuring stories from:
Antigua, Australia, Bermuda, Bonaire, California, Fiji, Guam, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Palau, Philippines, Ponape, Saint Lucia, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Tonga, Truk, U.S. Virgin Islands, Vanuatu, Western Samoa, and Yap. Includes over 20 color photos and maps.

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining.......2007-10-10

This is a great light hearted, tongue-in-cheek look at diving and dive professionals. It is about one mans experiences and passion for diving and travel. This book should be consumed with a six pack.

4 out of 5 stars Funny, fascinating stories of dive travel.......2007-10-05

I bought this book on a whim because I am a scuba diver and I enjoy reading stories about scuba. I found this book of stories very funny and enjoyable. Many of them are not so much about diving as about the diving lifestyle and living in exotic locations. If you are looking for writing that is more centered around diving itself, I would recommend Sea Salt by Stan Waterman. This book is closer to what you would expect from Bill Bryson - a collection of humorous observations and anecdotes.

Zinskey's writing style is witty and self-deprecating. The stories are pretty short and easy to read. In fact, this would be a good book to read during surface intervals on a dive trip. I found Zinskey's observations of people and cultures to be insightful, occasional biting, but always with affection.

Some of the reviews here seem to have issues with the number of stories that have to do with drinking. In my view, this is part of what rings true about the book. There is a culture among divers and dive professionals and drinking is a part of it.

This was among the most enjoyable book of anecdotes I have read in some time and I will look for more from this author in the future. I recommend it as a good vacation read or as a gift for someone who loves travel or diving.

5 out of 5 stars WOW .......2007-05-14

Such a great story. Couldnt put it down. A must read for scuba divers.

5 out of 5 stars Rapture of the Deep.......2007-03-06

The Rapture of the deep is more about Deep drinking than deep diving. I laughed out loud over and over. A must read for anyone considering professional diving or Drinking

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-02-08

This book is very entertaining for those who are into scuba diving. If you want some good reading spiced with a controversial subject, you should also check The Last Attempt by Carlos Serra. I just finished that one and still surprised about the story.

That story has James Cameron interested in making it a film but it's so controversial that I guess he's just waiting to see what happens.

The rapture of the deep and The Last Attempt by Carlos Serra are excellent choices for the scuba freaks, but The Last Attempt is a bit more enticing.

Book Description

In this latest and most accessible work from church historian, futurist, and best-selling author Leonard Sweet, church leaders will discover the leadership arts that are essential in today's ever-changing culture. The author provides thought-provoking yet practical skills that will elevate the scope of ministry from mere survival of daily challenges to thriving in today's culture! He vividly portrays the new paradigms facing churches and illustrates the need to become an "AquaChurch" in order to effectively minister in our fluid, postmodern culture.

The author includes a "personal log"---questions and ideas that help apply personal thoughts as related to the new paradigms. And, each chapter concludes with a "ship's log"---ideas and activities that encourage group discussion and evaluation with church leaders. It provides an excellent platform for pastors and their entire church leadership to improve the effectiveness of their ministry.

This book not only challenges leaders to think in broader terms, but it provides practical strategies for making specific and meaningful changes in how they minister to their communities. They'll discover how to be relevant to an ever-changing culture with the unchanging gospel of Jesus Christ!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Engaging and Disturbing.......2003-05-23

This is the first book I have read by Leonard Sweet and I found it both engaging and troubling. Engaging because Sweet is a masterful communicator. I've rarely encountered such an excellent word-smith. He has a rare gift for illustrating truth through metaphor. The entire book, in fact, is built on the metaphor of the mariner. Jesus is our North Star, the Bible is our Compass, Tradition is our Anchor, Creativity is our Gyroscope, etc. Sweet talks about "the traps of maps" and how people go over-board in wrongly relating to the Bible. He freely quotes poets and actors, preachers and philosophers, newspapers and supermodels in his grasping for ways to communicate. His grasp of postmodern culture is amazing.

Not so, however, his grasp of Scripture and this is what makes the book disturbing. While he acknowledges the authority of Scripture, he fails to demonstrate proper exegesis. He calls himself almost a fundamentalist when it comes to the content of the gospel, but almost a libertine when it comes to the containers in which the gospel is presented, which sounds a lot like "the end justifies the means." When it comes to methods, anything goes. I fear that such looseness with methods cannot help but compromise the message. A dirty container will pollute the content that is placed within it, and too much adaptation to culture will adversely affect our understanding of the gospel. Sweet walks too close to the line, I think.

There is more emphasis on giftedness and innovation in leadership than on character and godliness. In fact, I remember absolutely no discussion on the qualifcations for leadership stipulated in the Pastoral Epistles. Troubling, for a book on church leadership. Creativity is given more weight than fidelity to Scripture. The pulpit is considered a prison, not the primary platform for disseminating truth. These all make the book disturbing to me, and not one that I would quickly recommend to
others.

A few positives, though: his chapter on taking shore leave (Sabbaths) was needed and helpful. Also, his many, many colorful illustrations and quotations. The book is worth periodic revisiting for the illustrations alone. I also see value in Sweet's emphasis on utilizing technology, particularly the Internet, in the church - but not to the neglect of more traditional forms like preaching and teaching.

So, in summary, this book is a mixed bag. In Sweet's attempt to help the ship of the church navigate the seas of postmodern culture, Aquachurch is in danger of getting too much water into the boat.

5 out of 5 stars great book to promote change where it's needed........2002-10-20

This book is written specifically for churches that don't feel that their voice is reaching our current culture. Leonard Sweet, a postmodern visionary, applies much of the trends written about in his book SoulTsunami to the church, encouraging it to grow and change not the central message of Christianity, but rather the containers we present it in. Sweet does not get too specific about methods within the book, but rather presents a "jumping off point" in each chapter for churches to transform themselves. Each chapter ends with ideas for discussion and activities to apply many of the concepts discussed. AquaChurch is not a panacea in and of itself, and does not claim to be, but it acts as a much better tool; it promotes growth within each church's personal context.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the trap of maps and towards true "North".......2002-04-30

An intriguing book... and a book that points to the necessity of relationship with the Father-- and intimacy over methodology and pragmatism. Face it-- as the book says, "We want a map." We want to know what to expect, how to move, what to navigate around... We want seven steps now, eight steps before we get there...

Yet, LS reminds us that Christ never gave a map. He was never that pragmatic. Rather, He called us to intimacy, to relationship ("Follow Me."). Using the idea of "true North" as our guidepost, Sweet expounds upon the idea of the Church as a ship... (Another interesting read here, which is somewhat related is Ike Reighard's "Discovering Your North Star".) In this "sink or swim" time for the Church, this message bears our time and careful attention.

5 out of 5 stars Finest book on Postmodern ministry in print.......2001-09-27

I was awed at how useful this book was. It had fantastic ministry ideas and practical ways to implement them. It avoided any of the political issues that were in SoulTsunami, and offers a great guide for navigating the postmodern world. Get this book now.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best........2001-08-27

I thoroughly enjoy the work of Len Sweet. I have gathered helpful insights from every one of his books. His quirky way of saying things has helped me to look at my faith and ministry from new and different perspectives. This is particularly true of Aqua Church. Every chapter helps to define what the Church should be about in the 21st century. Len discussion of tradition is particularly helpful in thinking about and introducing change in the Church. His examples of churches from around the country don't overwhelm the practical thrust of the book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to Unix.......2007-09-05

A small amount of background. I started out using Dos 3.0 - and have always used Microsoft products. Up until about the year 2000 when I got a job as a computer tech as a high school that used alot of Macs. I learned to love the Mac almost overnight and haven't purchased a PC since. When OS X came out I was apprehensive about the shell. I knew DOS like the back of my hand, but I didn't know ANY unix commands and really wanted to learn. The unix books I ordered all seemed to be more advanced or for ABSOLUTE beginners. This book is more like the books on DOS I remember, showing you step by step how to command the shell in Mac OS X, and since the shell is always the same in OS X (unless you customize it) you know this books' information will work. Now after reading this book, I'm going back to the more advanced Unix books and they are making much more sense to me - and the best part is I've been recently learning Linux (Ubuntu to be precise) and have had to troubleshoot a video card issue. Without having read this book, I would be totally lost! If you've got a Max with OS X and want to learn Unix this book is perfect!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book to know Unix basics.......2007-04-26

The book seems to me an excellent reference in order to introduce the reader in the language which supports Mac OS X. I think the interested user of Mac has, with this book, the opportunity to know something more than doing click on a series of windows. The author points out in his preface the existence of such projects as the Fink and DarwinPorts ones whose purpose is to develop free software for Mac. In my opinion, that's useful and valuable since not only the standard user of Mac does not know those projects, but also because being involved with this kind of software, the user is forced to learn something more than doing click on the appropriate window menus. The author explains concepts clearly so that the reader can understand them easily. Probably, the book is not intended to help the experienced user; I think that such a user is concerned with Unix, not Unix for operating systems based on it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overall Introduction.......2007-02-03

This book is easy to read and a good intro. to using Unix on the Mac, and the Terminal. It has enough information for most command line work, and will overwhelm you with some stuff that you are unlikely to use in other areas.

3 out of 5 stars Just a taste of Unix on Mac.......2006-12-12

Get the Sobell Unix for Mac OC X Users...it's by far a superior value, and provides in-depth coverage...Dave Taylor's book just scratches the surface...I'm glad I took out from the Library first...read it in an hour and decided to get the Sobell text, you'll thank me later...Unix for Tiger is like the Cliffs notes edition for the Complete Works of William Shakespeare

3 out of 5 stars Nice on concepts, poor on details.......2006-09-19

I had really high hopes for this book. I consider myself a pretty smart Mac tech, but Unix was the one thing that really scared me about OS X. To fix some esoteric problem, I'd have to follow some Unix recipe and it always annoyed me I didn't understand what I was typing. O'Relly books are well known not just for the animals on the cover, but excellent explanations of very technical concepts.

After reading Taylor's book, I felt better, but not by much. Most readers can easily understand the basic unix file structure commands, but towards the middle of the book he inaccurately assumed that his readers could also quickly understand some of the advanced concepts. Towards the end of the book I was left scratching my head. We went from move a file here and there to commands that were taking up multiple lines. Arrrgh!

The critical flaw in the book was a lack of exercises and real world examples. When I want to learn something, I don't just want to be told. Involve me and test my knowledge. Some of the more difficult concepts covered in the book would have been enhanced with numerous real world examples, each building on the other. Things moved way too fast and made it easy to get lost.

The book was an excellent overview of Unix for the Macintosh and perfect for someone to decide whether to pursue further learning. "Introduction to Unix" instead of "Learning Unix" would have been a better title. After reading the book, I was reminded of speed dating where you meet 20 people for five minutes each and decide whether you want to go out with them or not. After reading the book I have enough familiarity with Unix that I can understand basic commands and how they relate to each other. I clearly want to go out on another date but any type of wedding bells are way in the distance.

PROS: Excellent overview of Unix for the Macintosh
CONS: Doesn't leave you with enough practical understanding

We're divers who have visited BVI several times, and we think Jim Scheiner's bok is the best guide available for diving the islands. - Jim and his wife Odile are accomplished videographers and photographers with a shop at Baskin in the Sun's location in the Prospect Reef resort in Tortola, and they have extensive knowledge of the area- they're passing some of this knowledge on to visiting divers. - My only wish is they'd expand the book in its next edition, as there are so many interesting BVI dives sites!

Seeing the cover, I expected that the photos inside would be just as or more erotic. I am also disappointed that the photos are in black and white.

5 out of 5 stars 'It's the water...'.......2005-12-07

The old jingle quoted above has gained new pertinence with Fred Goudon's marvelous new collection of photographs of men in their element. Though those who enjoy books on the male physique will find plenty to satisfy here, the real beauty of this book is the thematic manner in which Goudon approaches his concept of the play of water on man and the play of men in the water. With thoughts of our aqueous beginnings in the womb au natural, these well-composed photographs include water as in sea and river and water as in hose and shower. And the spectrum is quite amazing.

Goudon places (or finds!) his physically perfect male models both alone and with partners. His camera is able to define the presence of water on skin as though it were liquid mercury. Whether dousing their bodies with fountains of water or posed languidly in the ripples of sun and water instigated by the model, these are magnificent specimens in states of both innocence and arousal. There may be nothing new to Goudon's technique, but he certainly has captured some fine moments that should satisfy a very large audience! Grady Harp, December 05

If you areready to dig deep into your Mac, this book expertly guides you to the core of Mac OS X. It helps you understand the inner workings of the operating system so you can know how to get the most out of it. And it gives you countless ideas--and step-by-step instruction--for customizing and revving up Tiger to your specific needs and your liking.

Completely revised and updated for Mac OS X Tiger, Running Mac OS X Tiger covers all the new features and functionality of Tiger. They don't spend time on Finder tips and keyboard shortcuts; they focus on showing you what makes a Mac tick and, more importantly, how you can make it tick just the way you want it to.

Easy to follow and intuitively organized, Running Mac OS X Tiger is divided into three parts: "Getting Started" introduces Mac OS X and explains how it's put together and why it works; "Administration Essentials" gives you the tools you need to examine how your system is running and adjust all the knobs behind its operation; and "Networking and Network Services" covers the ways Mac OS X interfaces with the world around it, including wireless and spontaneous networking. Developer Tools for Mac OS X, including Xcode, are discussed throughout the book as appropriate.

For the growing number of intermediate to advanced users who are ready and eager to customize Mac OS X, Running Mac OS X Tiger delivers everything you need to become master of your Mac.

Running Mac OS X Tiger
A No-Compromise Power User's Guide to the Mac
By Jason Deraleau, James Duncan Davidson

If you are a power user on another platform, or a dedicated Mac user that wants to learn more, "Running Mac OS X Tiger" covers several topics that will help you understand and control your Macs at a much deeper level. Each chapter contains details on a topic, and includes ways of handling the given topic from both the familiar Macintosh graphical interface, and from the terminal (the command line).

My two favorite chapters, chapters Six and Eight, titled "Users and Groups" and "Files and Permissions" delve into issues that mystify and plague many Mac users. If you've ever had trouble creating, moving, or deleting a file on a Mac, you'll now know why, and how to get around these issues.

As the subtitle of the book suggests, this is not a book for beginners. Topics that may seem simple, such as Chapter 10: Printing, contain a vast and dizzying amount of information. This level of detail is both the strength and weakness of the book. Oddly, some things are explained at great length and in simple terms, yet at other times advanced topics seem to be glossed over in a cryptically geeky shorthand style of writing. This may not be an issue to those who are already power users on other systems (Unix, Windows), but it may be daunting to a Mac user looking to step up to the next level. Thankfully, the end of each chapter includes a "Further Explorations" section, which may help lift users up.

Are you a user or power user of Mac OS X? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Jason Deraleau and James Duncan Davidson, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that will help you master the latest version of Mac OS X.

Deraleau and Davidson, begin by discussing how the Mac OS X system operates to this day. Then, the authors show you how to get going with Tiger and help Tiger get going on your Mac. They continue by examining diverse tools and how they work together to form Apple's next-gen OS. Next, the authors show you how to use the Terminal and how to configure the various shells on the system. Then, they look at what gets executed when and what the various boot options are. They also dive into the question of why there are multiple users on the system and why they are gathered into groups. Next, the authors show how Open Directory works and how to modify data contained within it. Then, they explain the various attributes and permissions that a file can have and how to work with them. The authors continue by giving you the lowdown on the different kinds of filesystems you can use and the pros and cons of each. They then give you a detailed look at how printing works, and how to use print servers, how to connect with Windows-hosted printers, and even how to share your ink jet printer with Windows users. The authors also show you how the networking system works including wireless, spontaneous networking, and Internet Connection Sharing. They continue by covering the Console, System Profiler, Activity Monitor, and many other tools as well as give you the skinny on what to look for in your system's logfiles. Next, the authors dive into using Automator and other tools for automating your Mac. Finally, the authors show you how to modify preferences stored in the system in a variety of ways.

In this excellent book, you'll learn how to get the most out of the pretty GUI. You will also learn how to dive into the Unix layer of the system to take fine grained control when you need to.

Book Description

On a foggy July evening in 1956, the Italian cruise liner Andrea Doria, bound for New York, was struck broadside by another vessel. In eleven hours, she would sink nearly 250 feet to the murky Atlantic Ocean floor. Thanks to a daring rescue operation, only 51 of more than 1,700 people died in the tragedy. But the Andrea Doria is still taking lives.

Considered the Mt. Everest of diving, the Andrea Doria is the ultimate deepwater wreck challenge. Over the years, a small but fanatical group of extreme scuba divers have investigated the Andrea Doria, pushing themselves to the very limits of human endurance to explore her -- and not all have returned. Diver Kevin McMurray takes you inside this elite club with a hard, honest look at those who go deeper, farther, and closer to the edge than others would ever dream.

Deep Descent is the riveting true story of the human spirit overcoming human frailty and of fearsome, mortal risks traded for a hard-core adrenaline rush. Chronicling these adventures in his page-turning narrative and in dozens of dramatic photos, McMurray draws us deeper into the cold heart of the unforgiving sea, giving us a powerful vision of a place to which few will ever have the skills -- or the courage -- to go.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good diver's book.......2007-08-23

Kevin McMurray produced an exciting and revealing account of the men and women who dive the Andrea Doria. Its a very good book for people just getting into the sport, because it deals with the pioneers.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping and well-written but was too terse at times.......2007-08-22

This was a great book from two standpoints. As a reader, I appreciated how well-organized the book was. The chapters are not broken down chronologically but rather by weaving important ideas into a coherent story about the history of diving the Doria. McMurray knows exactly how to turn possibly hundreds of hours of interviews into a suspenseful adventure for the reader. As someone who has just started diving, it was a great way to cement some of the lessons taught by my instructors regarding panic under water, narcosis, and equipment malfunctions/hazards. This is also a great book if you want to read about some legendary divers in the 80s and 90s. McMurray paints a detailed and honest picture of the book's characters, allowing the reader to step into their shoes and understand their motivations. Thankfully, he didn't seem to baby the reader when it came to explaining the science behind the risks of diving. As a diver himself, he kept the explanations short and simple for those who are not already familiar with the concepts. The only drawback of the book is McMurray's sometimes sparse recountings. Parts of the book were very matter-of-fact as if it were taken out of a newspaper article when I wished he could provide more detail. However, these parts didn't detract from the overall good quality of the writing.

All in all, a great read for anyone interested in the Andrea Doria, deep wreck diving, or a piece of diving history.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-22

I read this book after reading Shadow Divers. Technically, this book cannot even begin to compete. I would not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Had to finish, wish it had been longer!.......2007-06-12

I just started diving this year and am reading all I can on this sport. This book was one that I had to finish.I enjoyed it from cover to cover. I know how dangerous scuba can be and this book really pounded that point home. I thought this book was well written and kept me turning the pages.I'm glad it let me know the up to date information on the where and the what, of all the people that were in the main focus of the book. I look forward to reading more of his books.

5 out of 5 stars McMurray "Descent" Series.......2007-03-17

I actually purchased this book after I read McMurray's book on wreck diving the "Empress Of Ireland." I couldn't put that down - what a great book. I'm not a diver, but the reference to the "Empress of Ireland" drew me to it as Clive Cussler's "Night Probe" kicked off with her sinking. I hadn't realized the "Empress" was more deadly than the "Titanic" and, unlike the latter, the "Empress" went down in a mere 14 minutes - REAL bummer! Fascinating reading with the human and political twists that make it more than just an adventure tale; diving such as this puts an entirely different face on what some folks consider a safe sport. Highly recommended, as well as McMurray's other opus, "Dark Descent: Diving and the Deadly Allure of the Empress of Ireland."
