The Author.......2007-03-25
I just thought I should make some clarification concerning the issue of "fundamentalism" and "bias". As I note in the book's introduction, "Christianity" sounds like a generic enough word to define, but even this term can mean radically different things to different people both inside and outside of the Christian Church. Therefore, when I speak of Christianity, keep in mind that I am using the term in three respects:
(1) "Mere" Christianity. Christian author C.S. Lewis used the term "mere Christianity" to describe the core essentials of the Christian faith that any believer, regardless of their background, could agree to. Christianity For Dummies focuses on this common ground across the Christian Church, be it Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox. However, many important differences of belief do exist among these branches of the Church that can't be swept under the table. So when there is disagreement on a given topic, I attempt to point out these differences along the way.
(2) "Historical" Christianity. When I refer to "Christianity", I speak of Christian beliefs that have historically been upheld by the Church for some 2,000 years, not the latest fashionable flavor of Christian teaching that may be in vogue for the moment.
(3) "Biblical" Christianity. Christians have always maintained that the Bible is the literal, inspired, and authoritative written word of God. Following in this mold, this book will consider the Bible as being the legitimate "instruction manual" for Christians and "bottom line" for matters pertaining to the Christian faith.
So, rather than being "fundamentalist" and "narrow", I am simply embracing the orthodox historical/biblical teachings of the Christian faith that have been affirmed since the early New Testament church.
Finally, concerning the issue of bias, any author brings to a book his or her background, experiences, and a given set of beliefs. From the outset, I make it clear in the introduction that I am what could be described as an evangelical Protestant believer. However, my overriding goal for the book was to be unbiased, fair, and respectful towards all branches of the orthodox Christian Church (Protestantism, Catholicism, and Eastern Orthodox).
I hope these points help to clarify some matters raised in a couple earlier reviews.

Too Biased.......2006-09-12
I am not a christian, and bought this book to learn more about the faith. Although this book does provide a basic outline of christian beliefs, the author lets his personal bias slip into his writing much too often. There are numerous passages where he says something to the effect of "many christians believe this, but it doesnt make any sense". So if you want a fair and unbiased book outlining christian beliefs, I would recomend that you look elsewhere.
Should be called "Fundamentalist Christianity for Dummies".......2006-04-05
Having been raised a christian, I was suprised by what I read in this book. Several times I asked myself "you mean christians believe that?" The author assumes that fundamentalism is mainstream christianity and occasionally throws in some information about Catholicism, Orthodox religions and non fundamentalist religions almost as an aside. Very one sided and disappointing. There must be something better out there.
Good Book.......2006-03-20
I'm a Christian and this book tells many facts about christianity. I read about a third of the book and i find it very useful to build faith. even if u r not a Christian, u can just learn about it. also, it answers a lot of life problems.
I thought the "for dummies" part was just a gimmick.......2005-08-25
Rather than being a well organized explanation of what Christianity is and of what Christians believe, this book is a rationalization of Christian faith that anyone with even rudimentary critical reading skills can dissect. The increasingly stupid analogies and pop-culture references combine to make the condescension unbearable. This book truly is for dummies.
Book Description
Right now, someone you know is in desperate need of your prayers. It's the person out on the front line, leading God's army into the world to proclaim His good news. Pastors, teachers, and all types of leaders are under severe attack from the enemy. And they're depending on the prayers of those who care to help see them through. The enemy knows where our leaders are vulnerable, and he strikes at their weakest points. But the greater power is on our side. Through intercessory prayer you can reinforce your leaders with God's strength and protection.

Seminal Book on Personal Intercession.......2000-11-15
A seminal book on personal intercession. I've used Prayer Shield as a textbook, and I've sent copies to several ministers to help them initiate prayer support for their own ministry.
The concept of intercession being one of the gifts of the Spirit is ground breaking. Wagner's treatise on the different functions of intercession is vital for any serious prayer ministry.
The bottom line of this book is if a pastor fails in ministry the congregation needs only to look at their amount (or lack) of prayer support to answer the inevitable question of "Why?"
Prayer Shield.......2000-05-16
Prayer Shield covers the topic of personal intercession.. e.g. of those who are commited to pray for and cover an individual (such as a pastor or the leader of a ministry) in prayer. It begins by sharing some true stories of the power of prayer, and also develops what the Bible teaches on the subject of intercession and prayer partners.
The second chapter explores intercessors from every angle.. I feel that one of the most powerful insights in the book is the concept of different types of prayer assignments, and how to determine which type you fit into as an intercessor. E.g., some people specialize in thoroughly praying a request through, and they desire details and feedback and keep prayer lists and prayer journals detailing their requests and how/when God answered them. Others tend to be more prophetic in nature. They find it hard to take requests from people and do not like to keep lists.. they prefer to come before the Lord and get their prayer assignment directly from Him. You need to give lots of details and feedback to those who specialize in praying a request through, but you don't want to bog a prophetic intercessor down with too many specific details and requests. Peter identifies 4 types of intercessors. The book help leaders to determine which prayer-type their intercessors are so they can give them prayer information/requests in a manner that works best for them.
Subsequent chapters develop why pastors and leaders need personal intercession, and how they can begin developing and mobalizing personal intercessors. It teaches leaders how to recieve intercession and how to develop relationship with their intercessors and how to supply them with the information they need to be effctive.
(A personal note.. I used to be one of Peter and Doris Wagner's personal intercessors, and I can attest that they live what they teach in this book.. and as an intercessor, I found their system very workable.)
Book Description
Winifred Wagner was a British-born orphan who became Richard Wagner’s daughter-in-law, head of the Bayreuth festival, and one of Adolf Hitler’s closest personal friends.
A no-nonsense Englishwoman who displaced Wagner’s formidable widow to become head of the family and the Festival, Winifred fell adolescently in love with Hitler and made Bayreuth the summer gathering place for the Nazi elite from 1933 to 1939. And yet this staunch German nationalist leaped to the aid of Jewish acquaintances and artists as they were increasingly threatened by exile, imprisonment, or death.
Drawing on previously unavailable sources, Brigitte Hamann has produced a meticulously researched and elegantly written biography—the story of the private Hitler and his monumental obsessions, and of the headstrong, dedicated, and misguided woman who remained loyal to his memory until her death in 1980.

Wagner and the Third Reich.......2007-05-11
This biography is for those with a deep interest in classical music history, Hitler and the Third Reich. For those who have the particular interest, this book repays close reading. I must personally thank the author, Brigitte Hamann, for the enormous research project she undertook to bring Winifred Wagner to 21st century readers, and to history. Hamann has meticulously read correspondence, archives, newspapers and conducted personal interviews with those still living. And unlike so many researchers, she brought her story to life in readable language. This is a jam-packed history, brimming with event, and I read almost every word with intense interest. Winifred Wagner's purpose in life was the Richard Wagner festival in Bayreuth, and as head of the festival she maintained a close friendship with Hitler, who was her chief sponsor from 1933 to 1944. The source of this partnership was the so-called "spiritual" relationship between the German nationalist ethos of Wagnerism and the theoretical underpinnings of Nazi Germany. Winifred Wagner was a hyper-nationalist and ardent Hitler supporter since the Munich putsch of 1923, she was a strong anti-Semite as her many letters attest; and yet she extended herself for individuals, especially Jews, many of whom she personally helped and who survived Nazi Germany because of her intervention with Hitler on their behalf. This is fully documented in the book. After the war, unlike most Nazis who hastened to obliterate their past, Winifred Wagner was proud of her friendship with Hitler and made no apologies; never did she try to whitewash her history. She was a remarkable, deeply deluded woman, who ran the Bayreuth festival and headed the Wagner family for many years. Her logistical abilities could easily have been put to deadly use in World War II - luckily, she was buried in Bayreuth where she could do the Allies no military harm! There is no doubt that Bayreuth today is implicated and besmirched by its close Nazi ties. This biography is a brilliant accomplishment. Only toward the end does the story begin to flag as Winifred's life winds down in a series of futile family quarrels. But til then it is a fascinating history. Do read it!
Fascinating historically and musically.......2007-02-13
One of the most interesting books of the many that have been written about Nazi Germany. The book explains the motivation behind the seeming adoration of Hitler by the Wagner family. Having read Friedelind Wagner's book "Heritage of Fire" , it was very interesting to get a more objective account of those years in Bayreuth. The book can be read on several different perspectives and is carefully document. this is a "saver"
FASCINATING INSIGHTS INTO THE WAGNERS AND HITLER.......2005-10-04
The subtitle of this book is important - A Life at the Heart of Hitler's Bayreuth - for Winifred Wagner's institutionalised childhood, her youth with the ageing hippie Klindworth couple and the early years of her marriage to Siegfried are all raced through in around 50 pages (out of 500). Another mere 50 cover the 30 odd years after her de-nazification hearings and the takeover of the Bayreuth Festival by her two sons. The main bulk of this book concerns itself with the 25 years of her relationship with Hitler (and his with the Wagner family and the Festival) and its immediate aftermath.
That said, Brigitte Hamann provides a fascinating and eminently readable account of that relationship. Her attitude towards her subject seems to change as the book progresses. Initially she presents Winifred as a fervently (German) Nationalist, anti-Semitic character, much influenced by the writing and the presence around Wahnfried of her brother-in-law, Houston Stewart Chamberlain, even before she met and fell under the spell of Onkel Wolfi, as the family referred to Hitler. (Incidentally, Chamberlain was also English by birth but, like Winifred, became more German than the Germans.) The older Winifred is a rather different person as portrayed here. Throughout the war, as evidenced by many of the testaments taken from her de-nazification hearings, Winifred became some kind of Schindleresque saint, saving everyone she could from the clutches of her top Nazi friends - friends, acquaintances, friends of friends, people she didn't know at all, jews, gentiles, the lot. One suspects that all this is coloured by Winifred's own practical need for self-justification at those hearings and should be taken with a slightly larger pinch of salt than Hamann seems prepared to. One can accept that there was a certain naivety to Winifred that wouldn't allow her to accept either what was happening to these people or that her beloved Fuhrer had any knowledge of what was being done in his name. But her continued and oft-expressed loyalty to both Hitler and the principles of National Socialism throughout her later life would suggest that her opinions had not changed gthat much since her youth.
What comes clearly out of Hamann's narrative is a Hitler who found in the Wagner family and its mistress a privacy, a domesticity and a family life he so obviously needed and lacked elsewhere. Hamann remains remarkably tacit on whether the Adolf/Winifred relationship was ever consummated. One suspects not. What does come as a surprise, though, is how early in the War the relationship between them broke down. After all those secret midnight trysts in the 30's, it comes as a shock to realise that they didn't meet at all during the last four years of the War and that correspondence between them became more and more infrequent and formal.
Most of the other members of the Wagner family and many around the periphery come out of this book pretty badly. It seems as though there's something in the genes that drives Wagners to the bloodiest and most internecine of family wars. What is currently going on around the succession to possession of the Green Hill and all that goes with it appears to be little more than a re-run of what occurred towards the end of the war with the previous generation. Wieland emerges particularly badly. A spoiled kid determined to get his way and inclined to smash things if he didn't, he played the most political of games in securing the Festival for himself, conducting vicious and potentially lethal campaigns against the likes of Tietjen, Preetorius and even his own mother. And he was certainly the most duplicitous of all of them about his relationship with AH and the party. It transpires that he was actually second-in-command of a local concentration camp in the latter days of the War - something he would never admit to in later life. Wolfgang remains a much shadowier figure - perhaps because he was necessary to the writer for allowing access to the family archives, albeit still severely restricted and censored. Even Furtwangler turns out not have been quite the Parsifalian simpleton, devoted only to his art, that he and his supporters made him out to be after the Fall of Berlin. In fact, both before and after the War he was a dedicated schemer, determined to get the better of Toscanini, Tietjen and later the one he called the `K man', von Karajan, by whatever means it took.
So this book provides a good sprinkling of gossip as well as a fair amount of new material and information about a crucial and shaming period in Bayreuth's history, all meticulously researched and referenced. It also does us the service, like the film Downfall, of showing Hitler as a human being with human foibles and human insecurities rather than just as a mythical ogre - and that is what is so much more frightening.

Accurate guide, but spiritual gift definitions could be more detailed.......2007-06-26
Used in my church to help members discover God's plan for their lives and how God has equipped them to carry out His plan for their lives. This is a valuable tool for these purposes. Scripture references are appropriate and very helpful. Members report that results are right on target. Gift definitions, however, could be more descriptive.
Just Don't Poke Out Your Eye!.......2007-05-13
I purchased this "Questionnaire" because the price was very reasonable and because I had heard a certain Pentecostal preacher thoroughly bashing the author, C. Peter Wagner! Talk about controversy being good for business! Well, it works for me, anyway!
The point of contention was that C. Peter Wagner, as a non-Pentecostal, does not correctly define the nine "Gifts of the Spirit," (I Corinthians Chapter 12), and therefore his questionnaire must be bogus.
While I personally agree with the Pentecostal definitions of the "Gifts of the Spirit," I'm not prepared to bash Wagner, let alone classify him as a "non-Christian." I bought the Questionnaire to take the test myself, and the results agree with my own prior assessment of my own unique spiritual and ministry "gifts," plus they open my eyes to see such "gifts" in a broader context!
I think the Questionnaire is a good tool to help a person see himself more clearly in light of what the Bible has to say about spiritual and ministry "gifts." Although it would be or might be dangerous to take the results as "Gospel Truth" or "guarantee" of anything, still, we can say the same about almost anything useful. One can poke one's eye out with a toothpick, I suppose!
Therefore I highly recommend this Questionnaire! Just don't poke out your eye!
Book Description
This lavishly illustrated guide will enable you to identify the caterpillars of nearly 700 butterflies and moths found east of the Mississippi. The more than 1,200 color photographs and two dozen line drawings include numerous exceptionally striking images. The giant silk moths, tiger moths, and many other species covered include forest pests, common garden guests, economically important species, and of course, the Mescal Worm and Mexican Jumping Bean caterpillars. Full-page species accounts cover almost 400 species, with up to six images per species including an image of the adult plus succinct text with information on distribution, seasonal activity, foodplants, and life history. These accounts are generously complemented with additional images of earlier instars, closely related species, noteworthy behaviors, and other intriguing aspects of caterpillar biology.
Many caterpillars are illustrated here for the first time. Dozens of new foodplant records are presented and erroneous records are corrected. The book provides considerable information on the distribution, biology, and taxonomy of caterpillars beyond that available in other popular works on Eastern butterflies and moths. The introductory chapter covers caterpillar structure, life cycles, rearing, natural enemies, photography, and conservation. The section titled "Caterpillar Projects" will be of special interest to educators.
Given the dearth of accessible guides on the identification and natural history of caterpillars, Caterpillars of Eastern North America is a must for entomologists and museum curators, forest managers, conservation biologists and others who seek a compact, easy-to-use guide to the caterpillars of this vast region.
- A compact guide to nearly 700 caterpillars east of the Mississippi, from forest pests to garden guests and economically important species

Beautiful pictures, detailed descriptions........2007-08-23
Super. Beautiful photos and very detailed, and the photo of the adult is also very helpful. My only complaint would be trying to locate a specific caterpiller, some sort of indexing based upon size, color, spines, hairs, etc would be helpful (I'm thinking something along the lines of what is done in "Weeds of the Northeast" (Comstock Books)). Overall an exceptional book.
To Squash or Not to Squash.......2007-05-25
I've waited a long time for a book like this! The photos and descriptions have great detail. Identification is easy enough to be used by a young person and scientific enough to satisfy a professor.
Guides to butterflies and moths seldom contain pictures of the caterpillars of the adult stage insect. This book has pictures of both.
I think having a book like this (are there any others?) is essential for someone who spends time in the garden, or any natural environment.
Now I can know what is living in my garden and eating my plants before I decide to squash or not to squash it.
THEY REALLY DO NOT GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS.......2007-04-13
This is probably one of the most useful and complete field guides, in any category, I have ever used. The 1000 plus photographs alone, are of such quality that they become almost works of art. Clear and very usable. I do a tremendous amount of photography of wildlife, flowere, insects, snakes, and all sorts of other critters. This is one of the field guides I always have handy, as it makes identification so very, very much easier. The book is well designed in that it is rather easy to find what you are looking for. Like another reviewer, I might suggest you go ahead and get the hard cover as it will last longer and this is certainly a book you will be using a lot if this is in an area of your interest. I do wish that all field guides, not matter what genre, could be of this quality and usefulness. Recommend this one quite highly.
Best for this subject.......2007-01-04
This book is great for working with in the field, very helpful with identification.
Must have field guide!.......2007-01-04
Very clear pictures and descriptions. Perfect guide for gardeners, bug people and anyone curious in the out of doors where we always see these guys. Great Job!
Book Description
All living things are remarkably complex, yet their DNA is unstable, undergoing countless random mutations over generations. Despite this instability, most animals do not grow two heads or die, plants continue to thrive, and bacteria continue to divide. Robustness and Evolvability in Living Systems tackles this perplexing paradox. The book explores why genetic changes do not cause organisms to fail catastrophically and how evolution shapes organisms' robustness. Andreas Wagner looks at this problem from the ground up, starting with the alphabet of DNA, the genetic code, RNA, and protein molecules, moving on to genetic networks and embryonic development, and working his way up to whole organisms. He then develops an evolutionary explanation for robustness.
Wagner shows how evolution by natural selection preferentially finds and favors robust solutions to the problems organisms face in surviving and reproducing. Such robustness, he argues, also enhances the potential for future evolutionary innovation. Wagner also argues that robustness has less to do with organisms having plenty of spare parts (the redundancy theory that has been popular) and more to do with the reality that mutations can change organisms in ways that do not substantively affect their fitness.
Unparalleled in its field, this book offers the most detailed analysis available of all facets of robustness within organisms. It will appeal not only to biologists but also to engineers interested in the design of robust systems and to social scientists concerned with robustness in human communities and populations.
Book Description
Every believer receives a gifting from the Holy Spirit at the time of the new birth. But God also equips each believer throughout his or her life to use that gift in different ways for the purpose of building up the Body of Christ. Peter Wagner's small but powerful book provides clear teaching on what the gifts are, the difference between natural and spiritual gifts and how to find and use your spiritual gifts within the Body. The result is that you can become all God desires you to be when you find out how He designed the Body of Christ, how you fit in that Body and how you can use your gifts to bless others. The Church isn't whole unless you exercise your spiritual gifts within its midst!

Please Use Biblical Discernment.......2007-07-04
On the surface, this book appears to fit into biblical principles. Except for one thing, one of the authors uses his or her young son as a Christian "medium" to located demonic spirits and report what the spirits are doing. The Bible is quite clear on the use of mediums [Deuteronomy 18:9-12], even those who claim to be speaking for God [Acts 16:16-19]. This book has charismatic overtones. If you read this book, have your Bible open so that you can readily compare everything to Scripture. The devil loves to mix a "little" deception with "a lot" of Christian doctrine.
A Must Read Book to protect your home and family.......2007-06-27
This is a must-read book to educate you about protecting your home from spiritual darkness, just as the title states. The book points out things that are happening in the spiritual realm of homes. The authors teach you about protecting your home as well as cleaning your home.
Beginner Book.......2007-01-12
This is a great book for all beginners to the spiritual warfare aspect of their Christian walk.
WOW!.......2007-01-12
What an eye opener. Every christian should read and pray this one through. I read this through so quickly I could not put it down! And I could think of several people to pass it on to. There are several things that caught my attention. And got me to work on spiritual housecleaning. Movies mostly and after you read this you will watch movies television and books with different eyes.
And when I got to the chapter about the masons and shriners.... I went to sleep thinking I had no concerns about this part and closed my eyes, but when I woke the next morning the Holy Spirit said "Oh yes you do!" and gave me visions of my parents leaving the house with their vests on, full of patches they had earned.
This would also be a good way of helping others that you know that are doing things that you know they shouldn't but you don't know how to tell them they are messing with the dark side like reading the horoscope etc.
A must read for all.
Protecting your home from spiritual darkness.......2006-08-03
Awesome easy to read book.
Right to the point.
A very honest book related to real life experiences.

Release the power of the Church in the marketplace!
Peter Wagner, "faith and work movement" expert, shares the most significant paradigm shift since the Reformation: bridge-building between the nuclear church and the extended church. But there's a gap between the once-a-week church and the church in the workplace. Creating Harmony between these two powerful forces allows believers in both realms to fulfill their God-given mandates.
God's people make up the Church every day, not just on Sunday. On the other six days, we transform into the "extended church." Wagner's comprehensive volume shows Christians how to expand their vision and live out their faith both on the clock and in the pews.
Jesus ministered in the marketplace. So should we. But the culture won't be transformed unless it happens through us. The Church in the Workplace is a comprehensive guide to workplace transformation and will help you understand your call to service, to sense that God stands ready to anoint your work.
All Christians, no matter the task or employer, can grasp God's authority and power when they see their job as a holy invitation to claim souls for the Kingdom.
Customer Reviews:
Faith and Work Movement Expert?.......2006-07-15
It's difficult to be succinct with a review when the book in question covers so much "debatable" ground. This is the case with Wagner's latest, The Church in the Workplace.
To be fair, Wagner seems to have his heart in the right place. He thoroughly believes that the church must be "extended" out of the sanctuary and into the workplace. He echoes the thoughts of many (myself included) when he argues that the "clergy/laity" chasm has done more harm than good and that the one who serves God in the 9-5 is just as much a minister as the professional pastor.
But it's in the details where Wagner throws caution to the wind and comes off very UN-scholarly for a former Fuller prof.
So, before you buy this book, be aware that Wagner is attempting to establish a new way of thinking for many believers, a shift that mimics his own theological journey since leaving Fuller. This new paradigm includes:
1. A shift from premillenial theology (the Kingdom of God is still to come) to Dominion or "Kingdom Now" theology (the Kingdom has already come but the church is not taking advantage of it).
2. A shift in mission for the church (from "making disciples" to "social transformation")
3. A shift in church government (from all current forms to the "New Apostolic Reformation")
4. A shift in economic philosophy (from a cautious and often complex view of biblical economics to a full-fledged, unashamed approach to the "prosperity gospel" endorsed by many Charismatics).
It may be hard to believe for some, but the list above is not hidden between the lines of the text. Wagner boldly and unapologetically seeks to make the case for each of these ideas, often times mutilating key passages of Scripture in the process.
To his credit, though, Wagner admits to being a "doctrinal minimalist" and to being more concerned about "pragmatics" than "theology or exegesis."
So if you're looking for a solid, biblical mandate for the faith@work movement, this is the wrong place to look. Instead, Wagner spends his energy trying to establish a "phenomenological" argument for his theory of why social transformation must take place but has yet to come to fruition. The key, according to Wagner, is power and money. Once "workplace apostles" are in position and wielding their proper "God-given authority," they can begin the process of transferring wealth out of the "world" and into the Kingdom of God.
If the above points inspire you, then you'll love Wagner's book and you should buy it now. If you are concerned by some of the points above, then you might want to drop by your local bookstore to browse through the book before coming back and making your Amazon purchase.

very insightful eye-opening picture of the true enemy of the Church.......2007-01-19
I have heard of the Religious Spirit but I didn't know quite what it was and how it oppressed the church. After reading this book, I was able to see very clearly the way it attacks and divides Christ's body - the Church, individual Christians, and practical ways to war/intercede against this spirit. This book offers several perspectives and insights on the religious spirit, written by different pastors and leaders. As a result, you get a very well-rounded view of this dangerous spirit that has oppressed the Church for centuries. Reading this book will cause you to be aware of the schemes of the enemy and how he tries to choke the very life out of God's Word, God's people, and God's Kingdom work. Some of the enemy's schemes are so commonplace and ordinary that I am surprised I didn't see them earlier. As I look back into my own experiences, there is newfound insight into why I struggled through past obstacles in my own faith and in ministries within the Church body.
