Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......2007-05-19

This book is an amazing resource for any record collector, dj or fan of the eighties. A vast wealth of imformation. The charts are easy to read and the hardbound cover makes it very long lasting.

4 out of 5 stars How the eighties is documented in music.......2007-03-28

As one who grew up listening to the music in the eighties, this book was the first in the series that I bought. The book itself contains not more than reproductions of weekly billboard HOT 100 charts from the first week of 1980 to the last of 1989. What makes the book interesting to me is that it brought back the good memories of the decade when I listened to practically each song ever made it to the chart, collected the records and stay tuned to the radio for weekly charts.
This book is probably enjoyable only for those who went through the decade in music.

5 out of 5 stars 80's Child.......2007-01-12

For those of you who grew up in the eighties and loved the music, this book covering the chart history of eighties music in America should be on your book shelf or on your coffee table. I was amazed at which songs didn't quite make the top 40, just shows how different music tastes are.

If you are made about music buy this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great buy..worth the money !.......2007-01-09

Excellent book !! If you love 80's music, this is a must have. It has everything you can imagine. I bought it for my husband for christmas for his radio show and uses it almost daily !!

5 out of 5 stars Expensive, but comprehensive.......2006-01-01

By the time the 80's rolled around, my Top 40 days had rolled elsewhere, but I still found the charts impossible to completely escape. I was still fascinated by the songs that may have recieved extensive airplay on non-Top 40 stations, but only managed to battle their way into the mid to lower reaches of the charts. Joel Whitburn's chart history books are a goldmine for anyone in my situation and also for anyone who just enjoys the trivialities of the music industry. The reason you don't often see these used is that those who buy them, keep them. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Only 90 songs .......2007-05-17

If there was 3 1\2 stars thats what I would rate it.

The problems I have with this book is:
1.That it only has 90 songs. The other songs (most of them are Rolling Stones ones) it says are ommitted because of licensing stuff.
2. Another problem is that some of the songs are just to easy. I mean some are good but I guess I want songs that are not too hard but not too easy.
3.Some of the songs just sound awful. And its not my guitar at all or my playing. Like, for example, The song Great Balls of Fire. Its really just for piano and it sounds preatty bad on guitar.

Ok on the back of the book it shows a list of all the songs that were voted the best and number one is (I can't get no) Satisfaction.
And it says at the bottom in really small print: "Omitted from this publication because of licensing restrictions." And gives an asterisk (*) next to all the songs that are not in it. Oh and by the way the songs that are NOT in it that are on the list are:
(I can't get no) Satisfaction
Stairway to heaven
Won't get fooled again
Brown Sugar
Sympathy for the Devil
Whole lot of Love
Kashmir
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Rock and Roll
Whole Lotta shakin goin' on.

My guess is that VH1 had a list of the best songs and then they wanted a guitar book about it. And guess what, They couldnt get 10 of those songs. So why bother. Because it would be a lot better with them.

Peace Out

3 out of 5 stars Decent book.......2007-02-28

It has many good songs in it but they are still complex for the beginner and too easy for the more advanced. I just started one month ago and I can't really play anything out of it yet. My friend has played some of the songs and they are easy for him and he also let me know that they leave out all the barre chords and opt for open position chords. Good book if you can play through some songs already and you want a copy.

1 out of 5 stars 100 Useless Transcriptions.......2007-01-14

Hal Leonard makes a number of quality guitar books.
This is not one of them.

The songlist looks fine. The book looks good.

The transcriptions of the songs are pretty far off.
A number of them result in making the song unrecognizable.
Reminds me of some very old guitar books.

I returned mine.

Great idea. Too bad.....

3 out of 5 stars Wasn't exactly as I expected.......2007-01-06

Not exactly what I expected. Soundwise some of the songs aren't close to the original. There are a number of songs that it is apparent that the editor took some poetic license in redefining "easy." All in all, I rate the book as average in being easy and in song quality.

4 out of 5 stars The best decade in music.......2007-03-28

The seventies hold many good memories for those who grew up listening to the music in the decade. The book represents the development in the music industry in form of this weekly chart documentation. From the charts, the history of music during the era is well represented. The book reminds me of the days of classic pop, the birth of rock legends to the emergence of disco.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for chart buffs everywhere.......2007-01-08

Starting in the early 90's,Record Research began publishing books, which featured complete reproductions of the vintage "Hot 100" charts-I've got all of the books-Without a doubt, the 70's was certainly a decade of diversity-It was around that time that I became a regular listener to "American Top 40",which initially used the Billboard charts as their primary source-I'm glad I'm able to relive those old memories once again.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless Treasure - Reproduction quality spotty.......2006-04-12

There are certain things that help to color the events of your life, and for me, music has always been a key ingredient to evoking memories of my childhood.

So, it is with great satisfaction and glee that I can thumb through the pages of this book and let my mind drift back to so many images and feelings that were framed by the music that was popular at the time. Plus, I have always been a fanatic of the charts, so much so, that I subscribed to Billboard for a time in the mid 1970s, and paid for it from my meager paper route earnings.

Beyond the mere duplication of the charts, I can find nuggets like the fact, that for a 13 week span in early 1978, the Bee Gees composed and/or performed the top 2 songs. Or, that the "You Ain't Seen Nothin Yet" by BTO raced to #1, dropped to #34 2 weeks later, and then strangely, jumped back into the Top 10 for 2 weeks, before slowly descending down the Hot 100.

If you enjoy the music of the 70's, have a strange affliction for tracking the progress of songs, and can get past the sometimes grainy black and white reproduction of the charts, then this book will fit into your chest of book treasures.

This is my 4th Billboard related book, all by Joel Whitburn. There is no intrinsically redeeming value from combing the charts of 30 plus years ago, and yet it has a permanence that speaks to an era when music was maybe a little less confusing, in that if your song was played enough on the radio stations of America, you could get on Billboard and maybe have a career.

For some, it may have happened just once, but instead of guessing as to what was popular, I now have a piece of music history, from a period that was formative time in my life.

5 out of 5 stars This one made just what I was searching for.......2005-09-03

It has been a long time since i was looking for several charts of the decade to start my personal inquiries. Somehow this book laid in front of my eyes and i couldn't escape it. Though it is not in color is quite enough just to see the hits go up and down. Why is this book important??... i'll tell: the seventies were a reflective decade, a time between the outcomes of the long-night-disturbed sixties and the up-going road of what eventually became the sunny but excesive eighties. This book reflects the aspirations of America at that time as also shows the quest for spirituality (see some themes from the 1971 charts) the odes to a lost love (see the singer-songwriters of early seventies)to the feeling of struggle and celebration partying all night (see the disco era of the late seventies). Important book: changes in society, time to brake away, start something new, touch the skies again.

4 out of 5 stars What you see is what you get........2005-08-07

The book is straightforward. Every single Hot 100 weekly chart for 10 years. I just wish the type was a little bigger. It would be even better if the charts themselves were reproduced in color the way it looked back then. Still, a very good book

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars okay, but..........2007-10-01

TOUGHER THAN THE REST is a decent book though the format of the book's song-by-song discussion makes it read like a reference book. The author doesn't count down songs from 100 to 1 - instead she organizes the book by album, chronologically, and discusses only the songs from those albums that she deems among the Top 100. And speaking of the Top 100 selection, even though you can't please everyone with a book like this, you have to question the selection process when the author ignores classics like "Incident on 57th St" and "Jungleland" (neither of these show-stoppers are among BS's 100 best??) but picks "Workin' on the Highway" and "All or Nothin' at All"...not to mention 8 of the 12 songs on The Ghost of Tom Joad. For a more thorough discussion of Springsteen's catalog (practically every song including unreleased ones) try R. Kirkpatrick's THE WORDS AND MUSIC OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly.......2007-09-12

a reflection on the content of the book itself, but it seems a shame that they wouldn't pay the photographer of the cover photo. Also, what's with the publisher's product description: Greetings from Asbury Park, NY? Writing a blurb about a book about Springsteen's work and you can't get an album title correct? And confusing NY and NJ with Springsteen? Silly.

1 out of 5 stars photo used without permission.......2007-06-08

I only bought this book as I made the cover photograph and they used it without ever getting my permission or paying me.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce-ology.......2007-04-18

Simply a great book for any Bruce Springsteen fan. The author does a fine job of gathering information and writing it in such a way that will inspire any reader.

5 out of 5 stars A memorable decade for music .......2007-09-30

The 60's marked a turning point as far as music is concerned-In January 1964,four young men from Liverpool,England set out to make history-I'm referring to The Beatles of course-Joel Whitburn's book clearly shows the 60's was an electic decade for music-You had Motown, the British Invasion,Phil Spector's "wall of sound" hits, surf music (Jan & Dean,The Ventures,Beach Boys) to name just a few-Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Relive the Sixties Chart-by-Chart.......2007-03-28

I bought the book to complete my collection of Billboard HOT 100 Chart books. Although I'm not as familiar to the music of 60s as much as to the music of the succeeding decades, I enjoy browsing through the chart pages and get the feel of the sixties.
However, the back cover information somewhat misrepresents what's inside. It says "HOT 100 charts reproduced EXACTLY as they appeared in the original issues of Billboard." The fact is: the charts are reproduced in xerox-quality black and white, not in colors as the original pages actually appeared. I wish that some pages could have been printed in its original colors.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2007-01-09

Talk about a walk down memory lane! Every song that I heard growing up and how it got to its ranking on the charts. If you love the music of the 60's I can't thing of a better reference for the songs and artists!

5 out of 5 stars Sixties chart of USA.......2006-11-02

It is a very interesting book for those who wants to look back in the
time to the pop-years of the sixties - and recall the hits in the mind -
and see how the diffent pop/rock-songs developed.

3 out of 5 stars Just the bare basics........2006-07-07

Having bought several other books published by Billboard and Whitburn over the years I ordered this one and awaited its arrival with high expectations. I am sad to report that having now spent a few days going thru it I caution anyone thinking about buying it to be prepared to be somewhat disappointed.

All you get here are reprints of Billboards Hot 100 charts from the 60's and an alphabetical listing of the songs in the rear of the book. A little historical analysis and perhaps an alphabetical ARTIST listing would have made this a much better read. Don't get me wrong, it is indeed a complete and valuable research tool for aging boomers with too much time on their hands. Alas, a few "Value Added" perks would have made it a much more pleasurable reading experience and perhaps made the price a little easier to accept.

Final analysis: A vastly over-priced, needlessly clinical research tool that could and should have been so much more.

5 out of 5 stars So good...bought it twice!.......2007-08-29

Yep bought it twice. I convert the music for playing my clavinova and mark the selections of background and such. Well the book has such a good collection I got another one to mark even more selections. Two "styles" per page is enough and this would allow more. Sometimes this works when you like the music but want to play it differently. Again, good selection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars 2 thumbs up for Dan Coates!.......2006-06-24

The #1 reason I love this book is that it appeals to the mid-range piano level. I am at a lesson level 4-5 playing ability and have found Dan Coates to be my favorite arranger. I would love to be able to play the advanced concertos like my husband can, but I'm not there yet. However, I am bored to tears with most of the sheet music labeled "Easy Piano" out there. There's only so much fun you can have with the left hand always playing the C or G chord. I love Dan Coates arrangements because he takes you beyond that. These songs interested me and motivated me to WANT to be at the piano. Dan Coates books alone helped me add an extra octave to my repertoire in just a week. The #2 reason I love this book is well, I love the 90's! The songs Dan Coates chooses to do arrangements of are favorites of mine. There's a little something for everyone in this book. You can't lose with this one.

3 out of 5 stars a little disappointed..........2005-01-07

I just received this book yesterday and in the few songs that I played, I noticed spelling/lyrical errors. I always understood "Wind Beneath my Wings" to say "a beautiful face without a name...for so long...a beautiful smile to hide the pain", but in this book, the lyrics are "only a face without a name, I never once heard you complain"...???? If this is another version, I would rather have the well-known version. And I never knew Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me" said "I've got my eggs and my pancacks, too". I like the song selection...

5 out of 5 stars Found!.......2002-10-29

I was overjoyed to find Dan Coates' 100 Pop Hits of the 90's. My daughter recently left for university and we had quite a round of negotiation to see who, exactly, got to keep the book! I finally decided it was just as easy to buy a second copy so that both my daughter and I could enjoy the music!

The book was included in the purchase of our electronic keyboard a number of years ago and became a solid family favourite because of its excellent song selection, and interesting arrangements that were easily mastered. I also very much appreciate that the scores are relatively easy to read. The one and only complaint I have is that on an electronic keyboard, I have to use a clothespin to keep the book open (it flops around a bit because the book is quite thick and our keyboard sheet music holder is too short). This is not a problem on our "regular" upright piano though.

I highly recommend Dan Coates 100 Pop Hits of the 90's for anyone who is looking for something which gives some interesting easy listening arrangements for both piano and electronic keyboard. Excellent value for the money.

4 out of 5 stars 100 Pop hits of the '90s : Easy piano.......2000-06-13

5 out of 5 stars Ryan's first collection of poster art in full color.......2006-04-27

The first collection of poster artist Jay Ryan is both a biography and an art celebration: it gathers his works from rock clubs to galleries and arrives not alone but supplemented by essays from other involved in the music, design and poster worlds. Full-color reproductions of his works supplement these insights to create an excellent catalog of screenprint poster genius: a must for any collecting underground poster art.

5 out of 5 stars Wit and Humor by the pound!.......2006-01-11

This book is absolutely essential for all fans of illustration, poster art, and contemporary design. One of the best books you will find on an american poster artist, the layout is top-notch with original drawings for some of Jay's posters next to the finished pieces. Having watched Jay make his work for Ten years, it is great to see such a powerful survey packed into such a beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars okay so i wrote one of the essays..........2005-12-12

Maybe Narducy of Evanston is kidding, but just to clarify for the kids in New York, Los Angeles, and Berlin--this IS the Jay Ryan based in Chicago, dude. And this book of his posters should grace the collection of any art student or indie music fan...

ps. it would be great if Amazon would fix the typo in the title--it's "Decade," not "Secade."

This site does not specify that the music is for EASY PIANO unless you open the link to view its notation format. The song list is incredible, but don't buy this if you're looking for tabs and complete piano parts.

Book Description

The twentieth century has given us that male phenomenon who, with the wink of an eye and the flash of a gleaming smile, can send whole populations into near-hysteria--the heartthrob. Over the last hundred years the male ideal has shifted through myriad categories, and readers will find them all here in this dazzling array of heart-stopping faces, from Robert Mitchum and Robert Redford to Matt Damon and Leonardo di Caprio.

This lavish photographic celebration is the result of years of combing the finest archives for the best images, many of which have rarely been seen. Personal recollections, written especially for the book by some of the beset-known figures in fashion, film, photography, and literature--including Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Tyson Beckford, Isaac Mizrahi, Geoffrey Beene, Gloria Steinem, Helen Gurley Brown, Nancy Friday, Eileen Ford, and Herb Ritts--explore the allure of the mediagenic male as he has evolved over time.

5 out of 5 stars what a bunch of cutie-pies!.......2003-09-04

i thought the pictures of some of the most handsome cutie-pies of the entertainment world were wonderful. i even loved the large colored photo of guy madison in it! gosh, what a great looking man he was!! i wished i was a grown woman back then. i would have dated him in a heart beat! ha! ha! van johnson, robert walker, and woody harrelson pictures were a delight also. this book is a must have for any woman who loves looking at men a lot or "men watcher's". ha!

1 out of 5 stars Picture book without commentary.......2003-04-26

A picture book of 200-odd beautiful male celebrities, mostly movie stars, from the days of Valentino to the days of Leonardo DiCaprio. Most are "glamour" shots, face and torso, with only very occasionally a shirt unbuttoned or removed. Some curious omissions, and some extremely curious inclusions, but I guess beauty is a matter of personal taste.

However, the commentary is terrible. No discussion of the social and cultural trends that impacted concepts of male beauty, just insipid rantings and quotes with no citation. And Reuters is oddly homophobic. Over and over, he tells us about "armies of female fans (and I'm sure a few male)" and "eyes that made women (and a few men) melt." Why are the male fans dismissed over and over in tentative asides in a book marketed specifically to them? How about "armies of male and female fans" and "eyes that made men and women melt?"

It also seems very curious that the biography paragraphs (in such small print that you need a magnifying glass to read them) closet every gay star except Sal Mineo -- even Liberace is merely the subject of "rumors." Does Reuters believe that we won't buy the book if we discover that Liberace, Troy Donahue, Rock Hudson, Ramon Novarro, et al. were gay?

2 out of 5 stars Sorely disappointed.......2002-03-27

The gorgeous Guy Madison on the cover was the sole reason for my purchase of this book on this website. Photos of this actor seem to be very rare, especially from here in Singapore and I'd been thinking about buying this book for the longest time, hoping to see more of Guy. The only thing that made me hesitate was that I had recalled flipping through it once before when I saw it in a bookshop in New York last year and decided against buying it, although I had forgotten exactly why.

When I received the book a few weeks ago after I'd ordered it, I remembered why I didn't buy it... This book, to me, is an inconsistent and insubstantial collection of photos of the men of Hollywood. Admittedly, there are some very interesting and rare photos and portraits, particularly from the 30's to the 70's, but that took up perhaps only 50 percent of the content. The other half was mostly filled with out-of-focus (Richard Chamberlain in mid-stride - I'm sure there are sexier pictures than this one), common (Leonardo DeCaprio in a tux at some awards dinner - how common is that), fanzine pictures that were sadly & disappointingly included. In his introduction, Donald Reuter mentioned that it was difficult to include too many pictures in this book because "... it would either be twice as big (and expensive), or the pictures would have to be the size of postage stamps..." But, looking at the (poor) layout, it seems that there could have been so many more photos that could have been added; for instance, only 2 pictures illustrated the "Golden Boy" section! It is also surprising that Donald Reuter, whose resume includes being creative director, illustrator and designer, can produce such an amateurishly designed book (for all who are short sighted, the captions are TINY-- probably 2 or 3 point text!!)

This book could have been a wonderful tribute to the men of Hollywood, but it is lacking in so many aspects... and there were only 2 pictures of Guy Madison - including the one on the cover!

4 out of 5 stars Some Very Beautiful Men.......2000-08-03

On the plus side, this book has photos of all of the beautiful men in show business and even a few outside of show business. Thus, everyone will find some picture they love. Mine is a shot of Gregory Peck, which I had never seen before, in "To Kill A Mockingbird", in which he is absolutely beautiful. I've seen this movie several times and this shot is not in the movie. It must have been a still. On the negative side, however, unlike most photography books, there is nothing cohesive or uniting about this book other than a huge range of men who were or are heartthrobs. This is especially true since all different photographers took the pictures throughout much of the twentieth century. If you are looking for a specific heartthrob, the odds vary on how well you'll do because there is only one shot per person. I could have used fewer men with more portraits of those few but, of course, I'd want to pick who the fewer men were!

4 out of 5 stars A great book on the Greats!.......2000-03-27

This was a very nice book, and absolutely worth having. I wish the writer included more text. This is particularly so regarding Guy Madison (the cover) whose face, I am sure, sold most of the books before they were even opened. The writer could have mentioned the official Guy Madison Web Site and the web sites for the other subjects in his beautiful book if he wanted to limit text to that extent. In any case, this book is a must for those who love movie culture.
