5 out of 5 stars Bailey has just become the newest and possibly the most important member of our family........2005-11-19

Back in February of this year we lost Binki,a Lhasa Apso cross Poodle after 17 wonderful years.Prior to that we had a Dachshund,Max, who spent 14 years with us as our 3 children grew up.So,as we are now seniors, our children are all married, and now that we have 8 Grandchildren;we faced the facts and felt our dog owning days were probably behind us.
That is what we thought,we found Bailey, she has now joined the two of us and getting a new puppy was one of the best decisions we've ever made. She is a Yorkshire Terrier cross Teacup Poodle. She will be small, about 7 pounds, doesn't shed and has all the features of what we could want in a dog.She is 12 weeks old,we've had her over a month, and I believe she finds us acceptable.By this point, you can see Bailey is a pet,a member of the family is more like it,and we have no intrest in breeding or showing.Maybe I should qualify that bit about showing. We do a great amount of showing as a matter of fact, everyone in the neighbourhood has fallen in love with her and we can't complete a 10 minute walk in less than a half hour while showing her off and making friends with every person and dog we meet.
We,as the case of a lot of people who have dogs, tended to operate by trial and error in raising them, heck, didn't it work with the kids? Anyway ,I saw this book and thought maybe I could learn something. You've heard the old saying "You can't teach old dogs new tricks"There is simply no truth to that.I am learning lots and there is much more to be gleaned fom this book.
The book is only 160 pages and covers everything you could or should want to know about Yorkies. It will also be kept nearby for reference in the years ahead.
The book discusses how intelligent this breed is,and we have already seen signs of that.If there is anything that I might fault the book for,it is this.I am a very avid reader, but very disappointed that Janet has given absolutely no attention at all on helping me with teaching Bailey to read.I have already been reading to her,she obviously comprehends, nods at the right time, and even dozes off if the story gets too dull.I am convinced she could easily be taught to read, but for that,I guess I'm on my own.
Like I've already mentioned, and so have a couple of the other reiewers, the book covers a lot about breeding and showing in competitions, but that should not deter you from getting it.All the same principles apply, and your little friend is just as important to you and those around you as a Best of Show is to its owner and the show Judges.
Bailey is a great addition to our family and we intend to give her a lot of happiness and I know she will return any love many times over and that doesn't even take into account the companionship we'll all enjoy.
Oh yeah, one other thing,Carol touches on the cost one takes on with getting a dog;but remember this;
"All it takes is money to buy a fine dog,but it takes love
to make it wag it's tail."

3 out of 5 stars Yorkie.......2005-10-10

Being a new owner, I wanted a more practical book on the breed.
I found the author to be focused on the competitive aspect and
"quality" breeding lines. For someone who was looking at entering dog shows, this would be a useful book. For me, who
was looking for some insight at the pet level, it lacked practical applications.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the book/film contrasts.......2007-08-06

I found this book enormously helpful in figuring out what I had seen and how the material had been adapted for the screen. The authors of this book have a deep knowledge of the Tolkien texts and they have also viewed the films and DVDs very carefully. The assessments are balanced, well informed, and not likely to be surpassed as a commentary on the transformation.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and balanced.......2006-08-16

This highly recommended title explores Tolkien's Lord of the Rings vs. Peter Jackson's film adaptation of it. The several essays chosen by the editors are all very convincing and well-researched. They're also immensely enjoyable to read for those who've read Tolkien and seen the film (or vice versa) and love to compare the two. The editors were also careful in presenting a balanced view, for both pros and cons are represented (sometimes even within the same essay.) And there are even some essays on Tolkienian fan-fiction (and slash) that's proliferated on the net. Truly an engrossing study of Tolkien's work and Jackson's successes and failures in adapting it! I hope a second volume is being considered...

5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2005-10-26

Very interesting read, well written and witty. Recommend especially for people studying Lord of the Rings.

5 out of 5 stars A story of great courage and honesty.......2006-04-26

A well-paced and inspiring account of one family's experience of dealing with their adopted son's challenges with Reactive Attachment Disorder that pushes them all to the breaking point.

The author engages the reader with great courage and honesty as she pursues a seemingly never-ending quest for answers to help her young son and her family. Truly an enlightening journey into the world of adopting children with severe chemical and psychological imbalances, but also a story of strength, tenacity and self-awareness from a parent that ultimately learns to rely on her own inner wisdom and guidance. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars inspirational, captivating, and a great read for therapists.......2006-04-14

I am a psychiatric social worker who works with children with emotional and behavioral problems. I was thoroughly captivated by this book and found it hard to put down. The author's perseverence in seeking help for her son was inspirational. I think this book is a great resource for therapists (also parents, teachers and others who work with children) and will help them to gain an insiders view of what it is like for the families of children with such challenging emotions and behavior and the desperate search for help. I plan to recommend it to my colleagues.

David Nathan's life changed as an English teenager in the '60s. The agent of that shift? Records by black American singers such as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, and Nina Simone. Soon he was the head of Simone's British fan club, and in short order, became a journalist with growing access to his heroines. Over the ensuing years, Amazon.com and Billboard contributor Nathan has had Franklin bake him a peach cobbler, stood under the thrown shade of everyone from Esther Phillips to Anita Baker, and even had Miss Ross ask him to call her "Diana." The Soulful Divas captures Nathan's obsession with his favorites, providing two-layered narratives that meld career rundowns with interviews and other personal meetings with his subjects. Most of the 14 single-artist chapters are successful portraits, with the exception of Nathan's profile of Natalie Cole, whose drug problems and career resurrection in the shadow of her late father are little more than the stuff of a legend-in-her-own-mind. A dearth of material weakens a closing chapter on young divas Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Toni Braxton. But Nathan also provides many invaluable, eye-opening moments, such as the story of a baseball-bat-wielding Phillips threatening to smash up the offices of a record company slow to pay royalties. Finally, he fills out the received wisdom on "X-rated" Millie Jackson, who says, "When I'm home, it's crossword puzzles, television, and the kids." Kids who no doubt, like Nathan, picked up their share of tips on life and love from Jackson and her sisters. --Rickey Wright

Book Description

The best-selling guide to the lives and work of the R&B divas, now in paperback! In The Soulful Divas, author David Nathan profiles the greatest female rhythm and blues vocalists of the past 30 years as never before with an unforgettable collection of fascinating, personal biographies. He celebrates such legendary performers as Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, and others in provocative, behind-the-scenes portraits based on his long-standing personal relationships with these legendary women. The result is a hugely entertaining, candid look at the ups and downs of each performer's career-as well as an intriguing view of how these unforgettable women made a powerful mark on an essentially white, male-dominated industry.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soulful Singing Divas.......2007-04-12

I enjoyed reading some of my favorite soulful singers such as Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, etc. Although I was surprised that the Diva of all Divas, the late great Miss Dinah Washington wasn't included. I hope that Mr. Nathan will write a follow-up edition and include Miss Washington, along with Mariah Carey, Jennifer Holiday, the late Minnie Riperton, and the late Mary Wells.

3 out of 5 stars Mildly Entertaining.......2003-11-19

It is obvious that David Nathan truly idolizes his subjects which probably accounts for the calculated design at the end of each chapter to make sure in no uncertain terms that he has shown that subject in her best light. I can certainly empathize because many of the divas profiled are true favorites of mine. That said, soul diva aficionados will readily recognize this as a collection of all-too-familiar press clippings even the most casual follower has at least heard of. To his credit, it is indeed refreshing to hear about lesser publicized divas like Esther Phillips, Millie Jackson, Nina Simone, Doris Troy or Phylllis Hyman. And ultimately, the final chapter sketching younger divas appeared entirely too hastily thrown together with the end result being little more than an unsatisfying epilogue.

Quite honestly, if you are in to black female vocalists, this, of course, was an easy, flattering read. However, the finished product is little more than an indulgent scrapbook by a journalist who, apparently, could have shed infinitely more light on the personalities he featured, but declined or refused out of either fierce loyalty or abject fear. Not only do the subjects deserve more than this, but so does the author.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest book I read in months.......2003-07-08

Great book Mr. Nathan. I loved all the subjects picked in this book(I'm sorry that I don't know Doris Troy)and thought he did a fantastic job of painting a realistic portrait of the ladies using their own words and his personal experiences with them. I never knew Chaka Khan had such a turbulent past. Oh, and Esther Phillips- that temper! I laughed so hard. Diana Ross seems pretty nice (I love her) and I do love Dionne and Nina- they are such proud women. I hope the divas in the makings can successfully carry forth the diva achievements as their foremothers have done. If there is a sequel to this, Mr. Nathan, you must include Cissy Houston, Melba Moore and Donna Summer.

5 out of 5 stars 'Could be subtitled "The Lord of the sing(-ers)".......2003-01-02

David Nathan KNOWS his R & B. For close to four decades, the book's author has been a contributor, in some way or another, to the production of over 500 albums of soul music. He has done countless interviews, provided liner notes for recordings, served as producer on several, and even done a little background singing. It is obvious that if anyone knows what a "diva" truly is, David Nathan is that man.

"The Soulful Divas" covers the recording careers of the ladies profiled with little snippets of their non-professional beginnings, as well as individual highs and lows. However, it's these little "peeks" into the artists' characters that make the book such a fascinating read.

Not meaning to reveal much of the text, there are many little known facts reported in each profile. Each of the women has experienced her share of failed romantic relationships, legal battles with recording companies, perceived public opinions, peaks and valleys in album sales, and personal tragedies.

Most tragic of all showcased within the pages of the expose is the late Phyllis Hyman, a diva in every sense of the word. Like Nathan, I am a fan of hers, also, and her untimely demise still brings a lump in my throat.

But, the chapter on Millie Jackson is a welcome find. Jackson is the only diva profiled that is not represented in my musical library, save for a duet album with Isaac Hayes. However, after reading about the singer's body of work, as well as her down-to-earth and honest demeanor, I think that this is about to change.

I am curious about a certain "expletive deleted" symphony that she composed.

Note for the author: The next time around, include Patti Austin in volume two.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting trip to the land of soul.......2002-07-11

Great concept, terrifc subjects. I particularly appreciated the inclusion of such greats as Esther Phillips (whom is so seldom mentioned these days), Nina Simone, and Chaka Khan, in which gave me some insight to her early years with Rufus. The section on Millie, a truly under-rated singer, and the late Phyllis Hyman were also informative and worth the read. I really appreciated Nathan's straight forward and honest, yet dignified, portrayal of the all the divas, until I got to the chapter's on Aretha, Diana, and Doris Troy whom Nathan, in my opinion, showed favoritism towards. While he did an excellent job of exposing the other divas, these three he seems to take pity- Aretha the most. Adoration is understandable, but you hinted in other chapters about Aretha's less than royal behaviors, while in her chapter she was almost hailed as a saint! Same goes for Miss Ross. Friend or not, Doris Troy could and should have been replaced with the likes of Candi Staton or Mavis Staples.

Overall, the book is a delightful read and I would look forward to a part two, highlighting the likes of soulful artists like, Stephanie Mills, Minnie Riperton, Melba Moore, Candi and Mavis to name a few....

Book Description

Most incidents of violent crime occur between people who know each other, but in other cases (fortunately much less frequent) there are no obvious ties between the victim and the criminal, and these cases cause a great deal of social fear and uncertainty. They also result in large-scale, costly investigations and, increasingly, police are collaborating with other professionals in a process of offender profiling which might help their investigation. This book is a substantial, unique and critical account of the scope and practice of offender profiling, and its limitations. Professionals worldwide, from psychiatry, psychology, criminology and policing, have contributed accounts of their experience and knowledge across a range of approaches to offender profiling. Some use a clinical approach, based on the application of established theories of personality and psychopathy. Others argue for the effectiveness of the objective analysis of offence records to predict future offending. Some of the police contributions provide a frank description of their methods, others address the difficult issues relating to the use of offender profiling. This is a controversial subject, full of potent myth, and the object of this book is to provide a cool overview of the related scientific knowledge, now spread over many journals and reports, as well as accounts of the process and difficulties of offender profiling. It will be useful and interesting to most scientists and professionals in the field of criminal justice. This book is in the Wiley Series in the Psychology of Crime, Policing and Law.

3 out of 5 stars Correction.......1999-02-06

In response to the below comment to my book review - I did not have an "out of print" of older edition of the book.

Generally, the book presents an average overview of offender profiling. However, the Editors give credit to the FBI in several passages for the rape model, power assertive, anger retaliatory, etc, but it was in fact Prentky and Knight who first developed this type of rape classification scheme. Also, the book claims to represent researchers' opinions from all around the world on 'profiling,' however, the fact is, there is not one American author in the book.

    Book Description

It looked like an ordinary root cellar--And if twelve-year-old Rose hadn't been so unhappy in her new home, where she'd been sent to live with unknown relatives, she probably would never have fled down the stairs to the root cellar in the first place. And if she hadn't, she never would have climbed up into another century, the world of the 1860s, and the chaos of Civil War--

Scott Cameron's remarkable illustrations bring the past and a whole cast of delightful characters to life in this magnificent book.

    3 out of 5 stars Not great........2006-06-15

Janet Lunn has won The Mark of Canadian Best Seller Award, and the CLA Children's Book of the Year for the Root Cellar.

Rose, who is 12 years old, has no mom or dad. Her grandmother who took care of her dies of a heart attack. Soon after her grandmother's death, she moves into her cousins' house where she discovers a secret root cellar. This cellar takes Rose back to the year 1862 where she meets Susan and Will, her new friends. Rose finds out that Will has joined the Civil war with his cousin Steve. During the war, Rose and Susan get worried because Will has stopped sending letters. Thinking that he is hurt, Susan and Rose go on a dangerous journey to find him in New York. Their adventures are filled with passion, companionship, struggle, many hardships, and surprises.

Reading The Root Cellar was exciting, with many interesting cliff hangers, and character struggles. You never know what will happen in the next chapter. Each new chapter brings a brand new twist. However, Janet Lunn's writing is sort of off topic at times. Some times a chapter will give you something that you think is clue. But as you read on, you get to realize it is a completely pointless chapter. This is the reason why I mainly didn't like this book. But I would suggest this book to people who like historical fiction because I learned about the Civil War.

3 out of 5 stars The Root Cellar.......2006-06-14

The Root Cellar is a book by Janet Lunn, an award winning author. Janet Lunn has really unique ideas, and I really like the fact that she is Canadian and she incorporates some facts about her home in the book. She places the setting in Ontario, which is where she lives. In an interview, she tells the readers that her house is what inspired her to write the Root Cellar. In the novel, Rose, the main character, moves to her aunt and uncle's house when her grandmother dies. When Rose finds a root cellar, she goes in and when she comes back out, she finds out that she has traveled back to the time of the Civil War. Rose finds out from Susan, her friend from the 1860's, that her other friend, Will, has joined the war. When the war ends and Will still doesn't return home, Susan and Rose set out on a long and challenging journey to find him.
Janet Lunn's style of writing is distinct because she likes to give clues to make the reader predict what is going to happen next. This was fun to do because there were so many possibilities, but in the end, those clues didn't turn out to be very important. If Janet Lunn and made some sort of connection with the clues she gave the reader to the book, the book would have been much more fluent. Besides the fact that Janet Lunn gives a lot of random clues, she is a really good author because when she wants to describe something, she makes it very detailed so you can picture what she is trying to describe in your head.
Overall, the Root Cellar is an average book because even thought she stretched out the beginning by adding too many clues and unnecessary events, I like her descriptive style of writing and I love her ideas, so yes, I would recommend this book to those who don't mind a slower beginning, but they love an intense and well written ending.

3 out of 5 stars The Root Cellar.......2006-06-14

Once again, Janet Lunn has written another award winning novel: The Root Cellar. This CLA children's book of the year circles around the similar themes Janet has written in the past --------- belonging. This book is also inspired by the old farmhouse she has lived in in Ontario. The Root cellar is abut a girl named Rose that moves in to live with her Aunt Nan and Uncle Bob when her grandmother dies. Later on, she travels in a time traveling root cellar back to the time of the Civil War. Soon, Rose finds out from her friend from the 1860's (civil war), Susan, that Will, her other friend has joined the war. When the war ends and Will doesn't return home, Susan and Rose set off to a hard and tough journey to find him.

To tell the truth, I found this award winning book fairly disappointing. This book, however, is quite unique for having an idea of time traveling in a root cellar, but having to find someone who's gone to war is just boring and common. Also, this story was quite confusing at times, like when Susan completely believed that Rose was from the future without questioning about it. I thought The Root Cellar was boring because there weren't many exciting parts after the first little section of the novel. In the beginning, the author put many clues and hints that catch your attention to keep on reading the novel, but unfortunately, these clues and hints don't lead to anything, and this continued throughout the novel. An example would be how Sam explained that he saw silhouettes in the Henry's house. For readers who prefer historical novels, The Root Cellar is not recommended because it is rather an adventurous story. This is because the story line is more focused on the journey of finding Will rather than what Will had gone through at war. Overall, The Root Cellar is a worthy read even though it was boring because the author used different techniques to catch your attention, making the novel unique and very different from other stories.

3 out of 5 stars The Root Cellar--by Janet Lunn.......2006-06-14

The novel, The Root Cellar, was written by Janet Lunn, a famous, well respected author. It is a wonderful, timeless novel that has been popular for two decades, winning the CLA Children's Book of the Year Award. It was shocking when a reporter visited Janet's house, finding it quite similar as the Henry's house, as described in novel. Janet confessed that she had gotten the idea for her novel from her new house, only that the root cellar was long gone.

The story takes place in Canada, like where Janet lived, but the characters end up going to United States for reasons related to the American Civil war. Rose was originally from the present time, but when she explores her new house, she finds a magical root cellar. She walked through the root cellar, and into the time of the American Civil War and meets two new friends, one of which is going to war. Months after the war ended, their friend still did not come home. Rose and her other friend set off on a tough, life-threatening journey to find him.

I think that Janet Lunn is a very descriptive author, sometimes too detailed. Although the strategy of being descriptive gives the readers a motion picture in their heads while they read it, sometimes it makes the novel to o long and boring. Additionally, Janet also added events that weren't needed because they led to nothing and that disappoints the reader. She could improve her novels by beings descriptive only in the introductory paragraph of every different scene. This book would please many readers that enjoy fast-paced, adventure novels. As a result, Janet Lunn is an excellent, well-experienced author of many books, including the Root Cellar, but she could still improve her novels from almost perfect, to perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Opinions on The Root Cellar.......2006-06-14

Janet Lunn lives in Southern Ontario, the setting of her CLA award winning book "The Root Cellar". In the book, there was a mysterious cellar which Rose was able to use to travel through time back to the American Civil War. The main characters Rose, Susan, and Will are great friends. Will left to help the North in the war, Rose and Susan decided to look for Will even though they don't know where he was. Rose and Susan met each other and went through many tough situations and adventures during the journey to find Will. I think Janet Lunn is a very skillful writer but the style she writes just doesn't interest me. Somehow when I read the book, it made me feel like the story was rushed and having many random events thrown in the book. I lost interest while reading the book. It might be a good book for other people but I like my books with more actions and adventures. The book was pretty well written but it wasn't the kind of book that I would want to read. So if anyone out there who is about to read this book and likes action, I suggest you to think it over about reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album Great Music Book : ).......2006-12-09

I consider this to be Janet's best album, and I was finally able to afford the music book that mirrors the cd (jobs are great). Anyway, some of the songs seem very difficult (tons of 5 note chords with flats/sharps/naturals all over the place), and some are easier. I think the ones best suited for piano playing in this book are Everytime (fairly simple, lots of broken chords, and it sounds a lot like the original recording), Empty (beautiful broken chords on the left hand and the melody an octave higher on the right), Tonight's The Night (more broken chords, fairly simple, and very warm sounding), and Special (a little repetative sounding, but still pretty easy to get the hang of once you figure out the rhythm). But if you love the CD and you play a bit of piano, don't hesitate to buy the book : ).
