If Christian men are going to change from a pitiful, wimpy bunch of "really nice guys" to men who are made in the image of God, they must reexamine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true "wild" hearts, writes bestselling author John Eldredge in Wild at Heart: Discovering a Life of Passion, Freedom, and Adventure. Eldredge throws down the gauntlet--men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the "secret longings" of their hearts. Although the book succeeds best in its slant toward a male audience, it also strives to help women understand the implications of authentic masculinity in their relationships with men. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and appealing anecdotes about his family, sprinkling the text with touches of humor and overlying everything with heartfelt passion. Even as he mixes eclectic ideas about masculinity from popular movies such as Braveheart with classic words from Oswald Chambers, and lyrics from the Dixie Chicks with stories from the Bible, he points to only one answer for men searching for their true wildness of heart. Writes Eldredge, "The only way to live in this adventure ... with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes ... is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God." --Cindy Crosby

Book Description

God designed men to be dangerous, says John Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires-aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be-dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

Has some good open insights, but misses the mark as the author wants us to return to the patriarchal ways of thinking that actually hurts true masculinity.Men-The Gods of Love

5 out of 5 stars Wild at Heart Rocks.......2007-09-27

Wild at Heart rocks! Perfect view of God and men - No. A great motivator for men to develop a deep and very personal relationship with God - Yes. Having read the book a couple of times, and now having read other John Eldredge books, I can tell you that my spiritual walk with God has been completely changed in a very meaningful way. In fact 'changed' is probably a word that does not completely convey the real impact of the message on my life -- 'Warped Across the Universe' would be more descriptive.

As a few reviewers have highlighted, the book is not perfect. Nor is it the answer to every man's questions about his masculinity and how we are all formed in God's image. It simply provides a strong framework to think differently about what it means to be a man but yet a Christian.

As mentioned again by several reviewers, although the book has a little bravado here and there, it is not license to mistreat other people, especially not the women in our life's. The message is very clear. Although the God is a Warrior, He is also a compelling force who loves mankind deeply.

Bottom-line about this book is that message, can at least for some men, revolutionize their thinking about God, Church, their families and their relationships with other people. It has changed me in a personal a deep manner that this review cannot even begin to express.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Spiritual and Invigorating - Not Just For Men!.......2007-09-25

I cannot speak highly enough of this book! I learned so much from reading it--about myself, about my husband, about life! In fact, I think I'll read it AGAIN!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Transformational!!.......2007-09-18

Treasures of the Kingdom, Vol. 1

I've seen the message from this book transform not only my own life, but the lives of many, many others as well.

The Eldredges have such a wonderful way of awakening the heart to its natural hunger and thirst for God. They throw us head long into a journey of pursuing God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.

The pursuit results in total transformation. Mediocre religion doesn't cut it anymore. We have to have God and we have to see Him powerfully and fully integrated in our every day lives. Walking with God, hearing His voice, knowing His guidance and leading in our lives changes everything.

For true stories of lives transformed because of the power of this message as presented by the Eldredges, see the real life accounts in the Amazon book, Treasures of the Kingdom.

5 out of 5 stars Timing is everything.......2007-09-13

I actually read this book about 4 years ago and remember thinking it was pretty good, BUT for some reason I picked it up a few weeks ago and re-read it. POWERFUL insight. Then just as I was finishing the book, my Dad died. There are no coincidences. This book answered a lot of deep questions I didn't even know I had. It was a real life shaper. TO those of you who are fathers to boys,.. its a MUST READ. The authors insight is right-on and much different than what you would expect from a "Christian author". BTW, I could see why some women might have a problem understanding and accepting some of his insights. I'd say they just need to listen, observe and keep an open mind. This book can save relationships.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing book.......2007-01-16

It's a great book. I didn't get a chance to read it all through but I did read a few of the techiques and used them on my boyfriend. We live 700 miles away from each other and he was amazed at the different things I did to him. Just can't wait to finish the book and try everything techique there is on him.

1 out of 5 stars Pagan Philosophy 101.......2006-04-18

I bought this book as a gift for my spouse. Notice I said "spouse". Sex is made to be enjoyed within the bond of marriage, I do not condemn any sex enjoyed within that loving relationship. It is a pure and holy union instituted by God.
My biggest problem with this book is something that none of the other reviewers really mentioned. Not only does the author include a couple stories and references to her and her friends' lovers, but she inundates the reader with idolatry. This author's beliefs revolve around "gods and goddesses". She constantly talks about sex altars, statues of gods and goddesses, icons and pagan history. She makes statements about penis worship, ceremonies and invoking the spirit of gods and goddesses. This is sick and twisted, it cetainly is not what I had hoped for. There may be some okay ideas in here, but there are plenty of other books that do not lead us down the wrong road just because we are interested in achieving better physical intimacy with our husbands or wives.
The other part is that the author assumes that the reader enjoys reading curses. Why should people relate loving sex with idol worship and immorality?
This book takes a great thing, sex, and twists it into something that many people will not want to read about. If you are looking for a good book about this subject, I recommend looking elsewhere. Hopefully, this review has helped you make that choice.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting yet difficult.......2005-10-08

I ordered the book and was so excited to see all the different positions one can do with their partner. Most of the positions are the same, maybe a leg move or an arm in a different position, but otherwise the book is alright.
Some of the positions in the book are difficult to accomplish. You have to be either flexible, slim, or your man has to be packing in the genital department to accomplish some of these positions.
Otherwise, it was great just experimenting and having fun with your partner. Women will read the book and understand what's going on here. Men would be more like, "I don't care where I have to put my leg to feel a different sensation, is it in or not?" That's funny. It's a good book, it's fun to read and exciting to try.

4 out of 5 stars worth reading.......2005-09-23

fun ideas, organized into fun chapters. excellent names for the techniques (which, in my opinion, is part of the fun!). worthy compilation - buy a copy for all your timid friends.

4 out of 5 stars Some good inspiration..........2005-01-11

While the book provides some really great inspiration and ideas to add to your sexual repertoire, some of the way-too-many synonyms and descriptive words used for male and female anatomy provided not only giggles, but enough adjectives for 8 or 9 romance novels.. Honestly, "Love Rocket, Shivering Member, Celestial Dragon, Healing / Royal Sceptor, Magic Wand, Warrior Weapon, Love Organ, Cobra, Stalk, Untamed Animal..." to list a few.
Definitely a book worth reading and referring back to for those in stagnant relationships needing a sexual boost - or even those new to sexual relationships...

    Book Description

"Deftly written . . . Patterson's book must now be considered the definitive Tsavo lion study... one of the world's leading experts on lions as well as an important conservationist."--Publishers Weekly

Through field research and forensic evidence, a scientist reveals his theory on why two Kenyan lions killed humans and then ate their prey

In March 1898, the British began building a bridge over the Tsavo River in East Africa. In nine months, two male lions killed and ate nearly 135 workers, halting construction.

After a long hunt Colonel J. H. Patterson killed the lions, which are now on display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

As codirector of the Tsavo Research Project, Bruce Patterson has conducted extensive fieldwork throughout the region on these lions. In The Lions of Tsavo, Patterson retells the harrowing story of those bloody nights in Kenya. He presents new forensic evidence on these maneless lions and argues that the man-eating behavior exhibited in 1898 came from the encroachment of human populations on wild habitats.

Patterson continues this theory by exploring man's interaction with the changing Kenyan environment, creating a complete, up-to-date, and scientific look behind this intriguing murder mystery.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2006-08-19

The author does an excellent job of making the subject matter readable for the layman. This is based on a series of scientific studies which are often laborius reading for most but it is presented in an easily understood form.

No definite conclusions are drawn but anyone with an interest in the big cats will find this a valuable source of information.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2005-09-21

It is not the complete history of the how Col. Patterson killed the Tsavo Lions, but a very good and more recent report of a sciencific investigation trying to explain those animal's behavior and the causes that lead them to kill so many people.
    I found it very interesting.

2 out of 5 stars Informative and a shade biased.......2004-12-24

The book is filled with informative scientific hypothesis' about the man eaters. I found it to be very good reading until the the chapter when the author started bashing the hunters he had quoted through out the book. Throughout the world hunters are usually amoung the first to call for conservation of a species, not the enemy of conservation. Over all I would say the book is educational and worth reading just skip chapter 9 if you are a hunter.

5 out of 5 stars A passion for the big African cats..........2004-04-14

For all of us with a passion for the big African cats, this book is a must read. The author, B.D.Patterson, combines his years of field research with an obvious love of the African continent to produce a scientific yet readable and ultimately fascinating review of lion behavior, biology, and evolution.

Starting with an historical review of `man-eater lion' stories Dr. Patterson clarifies facts and debunks myths. He provides a comprehensive review of related factors - from dentition to drought - from game scarcity to human burial practices. No stone is left unturned as he investigates aggressive behavior where the territories of human and lion overlap (and there is aggressive behavior on both sides of this equation!!). He continues his analysis with a succinct review of the latest biological and evolutionary information of the Panthera genus, covering the latest findings in DNA studies, historical range analysis, behavioral studies, and much more. Finally, he concludes the book with a review of conservation efforts in the Tsavo region and plea for continued assistance for this increasingly endangered species.

Readers who are tired of the dumbed-down approach many authors follow in order to cater to the broadest audience possible will be presently surprised by this book. It is thoughtful and intelligent throughout - readable and enjoyable - give it a try.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Study.......2004-02-11

Bruce Patterson's brilliant new book shines a much-needed scientific light on the lions of Tsavo. First made infamous by Colonel John Patterson (no relation to the author of this book), after he wrote "The Man-eaters of Tsavo" almost a century ago, and then re-introduced to modern audiences when the movie "The Ghost and the Darkness" came out in 1996, the lions of the barren East African region have been much speculated on. Their unusual physical characteristics and habits, including a reputed inclination to prey on men with greater frequency than other lions, have added to the interest about them.

Unfortunately, and somewhat surprisingly, little is known about the Tsavo lions. Are they a separate species from the lions found elsewhere in Africa or a subspecies? How does their social behavior differ from that of other lions? Why are the male lions of Tsavo typically maneless? Was the trait selected by evolution for some reason or determined by the tough physical environment of Tsavo?

Bruce Patterson, a naturalist with extensive experience studying these beasts, informs the debate on them to such a degree that even where he does not provide definitive answers to these questions about the lions - and he sometimes does -- he provides the definitive framework for understanding them. He approaches the creature from every angle. He has studied them in the field. He has worked on them in the laboratory. And he has extensively read both the scientific and popular literature on the lions.

Despite his impressive scholarship, Patterson is not afraid to tell the reader when he doesn't know something. He often writes that some area on the lions needs further study. I also appreciated how he took seriously what any source (white hunters, local tribesmen, etc.) had to say about the lions. Patterson does not snobbishly discount what a source says just because it was not written by a fellow scientist. He makes note of it in his ledger and considers it in the context of other information on the subject.

This is a delightful book. If you have any interest in lions in particular or big cats in general, you will find it fascinating and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Every Man Wants Every Woman to Read this Book.......2005-04-11

After reading several of another reviewer's reviews of this kind of book, my interest was piqued, so while wandering around in my local bookstore I decided to pick one up and see just what some of the girls were reading. I glanced through this very short book (only 129 pages) and all of a sudden I was embarrassed. I looked around, wondering if anybody else had seen what I'd had in hand and instantly locked onto Mrs. Doubtfire's disapproving glare. "Heh, heh," I laughed. She didn't laugh back.

I felt just like I did when I was in junior high school, buying one of those Midwood books from the local liquor store. In case you don't know what those books were, well let's just say the were written for men and were kind of steamy and graphic, some might say sleazy, others might call them dirty books.

I grew up in California, so the liquor stores didn't open till six in the AM, but that was fine by me, because that was just about when I finished my paper route, so there wouldn't be anyone around to see me buy them, just the old guy who owned the place. However, one time I went in, got a couple of my dirty books, went to the register, only to find Miss Swayze, my third period Social Studies teacher, behind the counter. Turns out her father owned the store and wasn't able to open up that morning. I was so embarrassed, especially because Miss Swayze was hot. Every guy at Bancroft Junior High fantasized about her. I felt like I'd been caught doing something really bad.

And that's how I felt holding this book under Mrs. Doubtfire's condemning glare, like a sneaky old reprobate, one of those guys who hangs around schools, sans any clothing at all, save a trench coat. I know it was completely irrational, but that's how I felt. Lickity split I picked up a couple other books, so it wouldn't look like I came in strictly for this one. The girl at the register started to check me out, running her scanner thingy over the bar codes until she got to the last book then she started to check ME out.

"Research for a novel I'm working on," I said.

    "Sure," she said.

When I got home I flopped on the couch and read the book and wowza did it ever open my eyes, turned 'em into silver dollar sized, bug-eyed circles. Do girls really think about this stuff? I mean there's a chapter in there called "Oral Treats" followed by another called "The Main Course". Of course there is a lot more included in this book about how to drive a man wild in bed, but my head is still spinning and my mind is still stuck back on that "Oral Treats" chapter. Believe me, this is one book every man wants every woman to read. It gets five stars from me, would that I could give it ten.

As for Mrs. Swayze, she gave me knowing glances for the rest of the year, but she never said a word about it. Not when I bought the book, not in school, not ever. But boy those glances, I'll never forget 'em, because her smile, her eyes, those looks she gave me, they fueled many a fantasy, the best kind of fantasies a boy could ever have.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting Ideas.......2004-09-23

I thought this was a good book. It had a lot of creative ideas for how to not only "drive a man wild" but to just spice up your sex life in general. Although, I should point out that some of the ideas are a little extreme... or, might be for people like me. :)

5 out of 5 stars Rarely Spoken Truth.......2006-08-26

Rohr gives that hard to hear Gospel construct of spirituality that challenges us to accept who we are and not sacrifice our "True Self" to be "one-up" on the next person, or richer, or better; we are challenged to give up judgement for acceptance; we are challenged to follow the core tenet of Christ's teaching (and the Buddha's, for that matter) that we choose compassion over competition -- Win/Win brings more to self and the world that the traditional societal false premise of win/lose. It takes significant courage and honor, typical male virtues, to follow the heart over the dictates of culture and society. Although written for men, the message is clearly applicable to the modern woman

4 out of 5 stars God Is Also Wild.......2005-12-07

Richard Rohr begins this revision of "The Wild Man's Journey" by defining God as "wild" in that God does not operate under human rules. God is free, that is, no matter what men do, God is "always the initiator, always good, always available." Men whose lives are based on performance and exercise of control are powerless before such wildness. Rohr pursues the theme with examples from scripture. The story of Abraham, for example, "has nothing to do with order, certitude, clarity, reason, logic, church authority, or merit. This is an utterly free God trying to create a spiritually free people." Additional topics include men's liberation, masculine and feminine spirituality, neither of which is exclusive to one gender; wild male saints; father hunger; male grief; and the powerful powerlessness of God. The appendix offers a structure for a men's group.

Though this work is written primarily for men, it has much to say to anyone who aspires to a deeper relationship with God.

5 out of 5 stars great update to a spiritual classic.......2005-10-16

The book is a major update and revision of "The Wild Man's Journey". All chapters were improved and updated, all were shortened for easy small group use, seven were dropped, and three completely new ones added. We have a much more user-friendly version of 25 to-the-point chapters. The appendix contains a structure for your small men's group and the M.A.L.Es mission statement. You could discuss one chapter of the new book per meeting.

The book is also ideal for a man considering attending the Men's Rites of Passage (MROP) with Richard Rohr. If you know someone considering attending a MROP, you may want to forward this message to them. The new book is one of the suggested Richard Rohr resource items for men considering attending a MROP.

In 1898 John H. Patterson arrived in East Africa with a mission to build a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. What started out as a simple engineering problem, however, soon took on almost mythical proportions as Patterson and his mostly Indian workforce were systematically hunted by two man-eating lions over the course of several weeks. During that time, 100 workers were killed, and the entire bridge-building project ground to a halt. As if the lions weren't enough, Patterson had to guard his back against his own increasingly hostile and mutinous workers as he set out to track and kill the man-eaters. This larger-than-life tale forms the basis of the entertaining film The Ghost and the Darkness, but for readers who want to know the whole--and true--story, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo comes straight from the great white-hunter's mouth.

Patterson's account of the lions' reign of terror and his own subsequent attempts to kill them is the stuff of great adventure, and his unmistakably Victorian manner of telling it only adds to the thrill. Consider this description of the aftermath of an attack by the lions: "...we at once set out to follow the brutes, Mr. Dalgairns feeling confident that he had wounded one of them, as there was a trail on the sand like that of the toes of a broken limb.... we saw in the gloom what we at first took to be a lion cub; closer inspection, however, showed it to be the remains of the unfortunate coolie, which the man-eaters had evidently abandoned at our approach. The legs, one arm and half the body had been eaten, and it was the stiff fingers of the other arm trailing along the sand which had left the marks we had taken to be the trail of a wounded lion...." This classic tale of death, courage, and terror in the African bush is still a page-turner, even after all these years.

    Book Description

St. Martin's is proud to present a new series of the greatest classics in the literature of hunting and adventure, chosen from the personal library of writer and big game hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick. These showcase volumes will once again make available the true masterpieces of Africana to collectors, armchair hunters, sportsmen, and readers at large.

Considered one of the greatest man-eating sagas of all time, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is the firsthand account of the infamous Tsavo lions. These lions-- who for nearly a year terrorized East Africa-- succeeded in bringing the construction of a railway line to a complete halt, and have been credited with the deaths of some one hundred people. Written by the legendary officer who shot these lions and risked death several times in the attempt, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is not only the story of this breathtaking hunt, but of Lieutenant-Colonel Patterson's other adventures in the African bush.

"I think that the incident of the Uganda man-eating lions...is the most remarkable account of which we have any record."--Theodore Roosevelt

It is with feelings of the greatest diffidence that I place the following pages before the public; but those of my friends who happen to have heard of my rather unique experiences in the wilds have so often urged me to write an account of my adventures, that after much hesitation I at last determined to do so.

If you liked the Ghost and the Darkness you will like this book. The first half of the book Patterson recounts the trails and tribulation of hunting the to man eating lions. Patterson does this in a very British and Victorian why, yet it remains easily readable and hold your attention quite well. The second half of the book Patterson recount several other exciting hunting adventures he had while in Africa. All of them quite interesting and worth reading. Patterson's tails are grab your attention and hold you throughout the book.

If you like Victorian writing, if you like tales of adventure, and if you don't mind self-aggrandizing and possibly exaggerated reading, then this is the book for you. Colonel John Patterson's enormous imperial endeavour - building a bridge for the "lunatic line" across Africa - brings him into contact with a pair of man-eating lions. The story never lacks imaginative story-telling, and neither does it lack that Victorian-esque spirit of conquest (in all things) and patriarchal service to the 'noble savage.' Yet it is a wonderful story, perhaps popularised by the movie, and it will certainly stir nostalgic imaginations for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful First-Hand Account of Life in Africa.......2006-11-11

I was prompted to buy this book after seeing Jeff Corwin reading it on "The Corwin Experience." I thoroughly enjoyed it although toward the end I was getting a little tired of hearing about Patterson's hunting expeditions.

It's a window into a different time and place. And then there are the lions!

I am going to have to go against the grain and critique this book a little more on the negative side than the rest of the reviews here. Don't get me wrong, I did not HATE the book, and I think "Miss T" gives SOME good advice (e.g. flirting tips), however, it was not the "exciting and stimulating read" for me that it was to one reviewer, simply because I did have a few problems with the book that aided in diminishing its validity.

First, it was riddled with spelling and grammatical errors (I suppose that's the editor fault - Karen E. Quinones Miller- since it is the job of an editor to correct those mistakes). Secondly, Gynecologists everywhere would absolutely CRINGE at some of the advice she give (I know a lifesafer sounds good in theory, but I'd check w/ the good ole doc before I tried that one). Ladies, if you are overdue for a Yeast Infection, take some of "Miss T's" advice. Third, I felt she could have delved a bit deeper into some of the topics. It read a bit choppy at times. Lastly, I also agree with another reviewer who didn't approve of her materialistic approach to getting a man - but hey, that's just me.

Other than that, it was "fun". There is some advice in there that's good and worth taking note of, but nothing that I've never read about before.

Miss T, please get another editor! Poorly written material discredits your work!

5 out of 5 stars You will read this book over and over.......2007-09-30

This book was off the hook. Did not think a book like this existed until I found it on Amazon. I don't usually leave reviews but I had to! Miss T. definitely knows what she's talking about. There are alot of great tips in here for the bedroom that will definitely blow men away but not only that. I really feel that my confidence has been boosted, in terms of how I feel about myself as woman (a sensuous one!) If you wanna find out how to please a man (even more) and what keeps them comin for more read this book!

I received this book in the mail in the evening on 7/23 and finished it the next morning. It was hella good! If you've never "turned a man COMPLETELY out," that's all about to change! Sista girl shares blow by blow tips, tricks and techniques on how to send your man home with a smile EVERYTIME. I highly recommend this book for inexperienced and "seasoned" lovers alike, as it has something in it for EVERONE. $10.00?? The info in this book is PRICELESS. I'm glad to have found it!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a sex book for black women!.......2007-05-20

What I like most about this book is its conversational tone. It was like talking to a close girlfriend who was giving you advice on what to do to spice up your sex life. I was a little skeptical at first, but I have actually tried some of the things in her book and they worked! Miss T really outdid herself and I look forward to reading other items by this author!

Michael Taussig takes a stance towards "terrorism" not common in today's world. By trying to trace the roots of this phenomenon, he brings to light many explanations and understandings many of us fail to realize, only because we have not come across them before. I give this book four stars instead of five simply because it is a difficult read, but if you are interested in what we, today, call "terrorism" and are willing to take the time to plunge into this book, then it will certainly be worth your while.

trip through the rubber boom of the 1800's in South America. From detailed historical survey to his first hand accounts of life around the Amazon, he never ceases to confront the reader with reality. His study is comprehensive in that he brings attention to all different aspects of the European, Indian and African people who live there. The study helps integrate the anthropological view of society to consider the religious, political, economic and moral as part of the collective consciousness of a community. Powerful book.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a simple ethnographic investigation..........1998-01-28

Arguably one of the most accomplished anthropologists working today, Michael Taussig provides an intensely individualistic bricolage of literary, historical, and ethnological interpretations of his many years of fieldwork in the Upper Amazon. One of the most detailed and poignant accounts of shamanism in its cultural context - will very soon be regarded as a classic.

The rodeo is in W.K. Stratton's blood. He attended his first one in utero just days before he was born (on Will Rogers birthday, naturally). He is also the son of a bull-riding cowboy that left him and his mother when Stratton was an infant. The search for this elusive "rodeo bum" father is an underlying theme of Chasing the Rodeo but its main focus is on the action in the ring. Stratton spent a year following the professional rodeo and bull-riding tours and he explores the circuit with a keen and sympathetic eye. He writes about the history of the sport and its place in the mythology of the West, cowboy legends, current stars, and classic rodeo towns, such as Prescott, Arizona, and Pecos, Texas--both of which claim the title as the true birthplace of rodeo. He also looks at the growing popularity of rodeo and bull-riding and what it means for its future now that major events have corporate sponsors and are held in Las Vegas casinos rather than fairgrounds. While acknowledging that the big money prizes are good for the athletes, Stratton worries that marketing considerations will force the sport away from the very traditions that make it interesting. As proof, he bemoans the fact that helmets and Nike shoes are starting to replace Western hats and boots at some rodeos. Still, he encounters plenty of true Western spirit and memorable characters during his journey to keep his love for the rodeo alive and his enthusiasm for his subject proves contagious. Even those who have never considered attending a rodeo will likely find themselves enthralled by this wild ride of a book. --Shawn Carkonen

    Book Description

From its roots as the quintessential Western pastime, rodeo has grown to an international, prime-time television sport. Steeped in tradition and the independent spirit of the range, aspiring cowboys and cowgirls are called to its high-stakes, rough-and-tumble fame as they risk their lives for eight seconds of triumph.

In Chasing the Rodeo W. K. Stratton follows this quest for one season of the pro rodeo and bull-riding tours. He explores the history of the chutes -- from rodeo's disputed origins (Prescott, Arizona, or Pecos, Texas?) to its current skyrocketing popularity. But out on the trail Stratton finds more than calf-roping and unrideable bulls, uncovering a culture complete with myths, codes of honor, million-dollar purses, Cowboy Church, and the kinds of legends that make good stories unforgettable.

Just such a story emerges here as Stratton tells of his runaway "rodeo bum" father --Cowboy Don -- whose specter haunts his travels on the circuit. As he learns more about the life that proved too seductive for his father to abandon, Stratton fills in a portrait of the man he never knew but whose legacy he couldn't help but inherit.

Filled with cowboy longing and rodeo dreams, this is a tribute to the characters of the West -- Freckles Brown, Lucille Mulhall (the first cowgirl), Wild Bill Hickock, Lane Frost, and today's superstars like Jesse Bail. In the great tradition of Wallace Stegner and Ken Kesey, W. K. Stratton fashions an expansive tale out of the gritty reality of the life around us. Chasing the Rodeo is a bucking, riveting, glorious ride -- you'll want to hang on for the whole go-round.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Call of the wild . . ........2007-08-21

While rodeo insiders may find fault with this book and quibble over details, it remains an excellent introduction to the history, the personalities, and the meaning of this sport as it's evolved over the past century. Stratton, a journalist based in Austin, TX, with roots in Oklahoma, comes by his "kicker" credentials fairly enough - his mother a cowgirl in her own right and his father a rodeo cowboy who went on down the road and never came back. Stratton's book is a personal journey, a search for an understanding of the romance of rodeo - the call of the wild in the soul, the appeal of risk-taking, the love of a past that can be recaptured for a moment in a beautifully executed ride on a bucking horse or bull. And he does much to reclaim the essentials of a pastoral ritual that has been compromised by commercialism, corporate sponsorships, and marketing that positions it as an extreme sport.

Stratton covers some familiar ground that will not be new for all readers, but many stories deserve retelling, such as that of George Fletcher at the 1911 Pendleton Roundup, the first bulldogger, Bill Pickett, and the death of champion bull rider Lane Frost. Then there is an account of the first rodeo "cowgirl," Lucille Mulhall and of Indian cowboy Will Sampson, who played Chief Bromden in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." In Prescott, AZ, he has occasion to recall at length the rodeo film "Junior Bonner" with Steve McQueen.

There is a wide array of other personalities who find their way into Stratton's book: Justin McBride, Will Rogers, Tom Mix, Willie Nelson, Jack Kerouac, Ben Johnson, Theodore Roosevelt, Buffalo Bill Cody, and evangelist Susie Luchsinger. He gets closest to the sport itself in conversations with all-around champion Jesse Bail and bullriding champion Freckles Brown. The first-chapter account of Brown's famous ride on Tornado at the National Finals in 1967 just takes your breath away. Finally there is the search for the story of Stratton's absent cowboy father, which rounds out the book with more than a little poignance. I loved this book and recommend it to anyone curious about rodeo, the fascination it holds for both fans and participants, and its place in American popular culture.

5 out of 5 stars Exploring the history of chutes to its current popularity and uncovering myths and realities alike.......2005-11-04

Rodeo's roots may be in the primitive West of the past, but today it's prime-time TV material, even while steeped in tradition, filled with pros and tours. Journalist W.K. Stratton followed the pro rodeo circuit for one year, exploring the history of chutes to its current popularity and uncovering myths and realities alike. His findings about the people and politics of today's rodeo make for lively reading in Chasing The Rodeo: On Wild Rides And Big Dreams, Broken Hearts And Broken Bones, And One Man's Search For The West. A spirited account of today's wild riders.

5 out of 5 stars Rodeo: Universality of the American West.......2005-09-19

Having grown up in Texas, I easily recognize many names and places and am quite familiar with rodeos. W.K. Stratton brilliantly blends the romantic lure of the rodeo as an expression of the American West with the univeral theme of the quest for identity. The book is a delightful mixture of colorful characters, amusing anecdotes, and sad stories. Mr. Stratton's personal quest mirrors that of all, not just those familiar with the sport or the region. His story's appeal lies in the universality of each human's struggles with issues of identity, values, and sense of place. I heartily recommend Chasing the Rodeo to anyone who appreciates a book that both transports one to another time and place and allows one the opportunity to be inspired by another's personal journey through life.

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves a buckle........2005-05-18

**For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?** "Kip" Stratton has written a winner of a book, here. I felt it appropriate to begin this review with that familiar biblical quote, although "Chasing The Rodeo" is about the search for soul as well as about its diminution. What I mean by "soul" in this context is that which makes us part of society as well as unique individuals within it. Stratton's father, whom he never met, was a bull rider. Stratton's literal search for his father is overlaid onto his broader search for the soul of the rodeo and the American West.

As this book makes clear, the towns that hold rodeos provide an essential part of its unique character. Moving the National Finals Rodeo from Oklahoma, which is steeped in Rodeo tradition, to Las Vegas is symbolic of the sacrifce of soul for that most America of obsessions, making money. Character is also lost when things are made safe and sanitary, and when elements that are foreign are incorporated into a thing in order to make it "accessible" to a wider audience. Early in the book, Stratton frets about being "a generic, white bread American" but learns that the "Kicker Culture" is as much a part of him as it is of the Rodeo. I grew up in a small town in North Texas and will tell you that the "Kicker Culture" ain't pretty and it ain't sanitary or even safe, but it is genuine. There are parts of it that should be eschewed entirely, but never "prettied up."

Stratton obviously spent a great deal of time researching this book. It is chock-full of the people and places that make up this sport and their history. At the same time, he does not blink from calling racism what it is or identifying as bovine scat some of the aspects of recent Rodeo venues. He may offend some folks in doing so. But to be less than honest in his assessment of these things would certainly diminish the soul of the book.

In these fractious times, it is a joy to come across a book that embraces something as distinctly American as the rodeo. W.K. Stratton has delivered a handsomely-rendered treasure for every man who ever wanted to be a cowboy and every woman who ever wanted to be a cowboy's sweetheart. He traces the origins of rodeoing, takes us to this wild sport's biggest events, and introduces us to the kind of outsized characters it is hard to believe still exist. So here's to Freckles Brown, the rodeo clown who rode the fiercest bull in captivity, and to Jesse Bail, the spiritual descendant of Larry Mahan and Ty Murray and all the great rodeo riders who preceded him. And here's to Stratton himself, the son of a rodeo bum, who weaves the search for traces of his father into the larger tale he is telling without ever getting thrown by it. He stayed in the saddle, and by doing so, he has given readers a chance for the ride of their lives.
