I picked up this book because I read and loved the author's last book A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating. I wasn't disappointed. I started using his U Perspective approach at work and at home. I find I can get more help from my boss and my coworkers. It even works with my kids. All I can say is this book is terrific. You have to read it.

Helpful and Insightful, format could use work........2007-06-22

I found the book to be very helpful for negotiating in all aspects of life. The book is written by a father/daughter team who wrote more from personal experience and interviews than research. I found their style to be more insightful. The format is a little hard to follow, the book does not break down the most important points within chapters or key concepts for reference. Some of the very best information is buried in the text, if it were bolded or pulled out as a key concept it would stand out to the reader.

Practical and Insightful
This is one of the best books on the topic of negotiating for women that I have seen. Since this book was written a number of "academic" books that tell you why women "don't ask" have come out but this book gives practical and useful advice from a father/daughter team on how you can negotiate successfully in any situation. If you want to actually become a better negotiator this book is for you. I highly recommend this book to all women. It was by far, the best book on negotiating that I have ever read.

Okay, but much better negotiating books out there........2006-07-12

This book has a lot of suggestions for how women can be more effective negotiators. However, if you're looking for a book to read I found Women Don't Ask by Linda Babcock to be much more insightful and a much better read.

This book is written by a man and his daughter and some parts of it come off as a bit patronizing. There are a number of instances when the daughter recounts anecdotes about how her father taught her negotiating skills that somehow just bothered me.

You'll find practical advise in clear and direct language. Highly recommended. Don't wait to read this book - if you want to stay yourself AND get what you want out of life. As quoted on page 54: "Human nature will not change" (Abraham Lincoln). Learn how to change your negotiating style, or adopt one in the first place. Wonderfully simple presentation of "Active Listening".

A woman's Manual for assertiveness training.......2005-09-19

I am sending my marked-up copy to my daughter who will be graduating from business school in the spring. Every chapter offers up a solution to negotiate a favorable outcome to get that better deal either in negotiating a job, buying a home, car or handling complex relationship issues. I wish I had read this book a decade ago! A male friend recommended it several years ago and I recently ordered it through you.

Good for solid understanding.......2002-10-14

Together with Professional C# Web Services, also from Wrox, these books will give you a solid base to really understand Web Services and Remoting. The basics are quite simple but you will also learn some useful advanced topics. I've always liked the Wrox style of writing, I think it's easy to read and follow the code examples. The only criticism is the number of authors. Some smaller parts are repeated and the style is not always consistent.

I read the book several times. I did some of the examples. The examples worked with no changes necessary. On the [web page], the book has an errata list, which is pretty small. The source code for C# and VB are on the wrox website. This book is for EXPERIENCED programmers. Don't even try to read it if you have no prior knowledge of web services.

The book has an excellent introduction to ASP.NET for web services. It probably is worth just going over the first two chapters to get a flavor of web services. Word of caution, I downloaded the VB samples, and they were a bit buggy. If you are a C# developer, the code in the book was fine. The VB code was not...

Top-Down approach is very useful.......2002-10-05

I recommend this book because I find it easy to read. The top down approach helped me understand the subject matter. Introduction chapters were very helpful to get me started and the details came in later chapters. I had no issues with C# code examples.

This book is well organized, I liked the introduction chapters that start you at the 10,000 foot level and then the later chapters dug deep down into details. This Top-Down approach was very useful to me to understand the material.

The first few chapters discuss the major components of Web Services to give the reader a good understanding of the architecture involved. The major components discussed were organized in conceptual layers such as the Transport, the Data encoding (XML and XML Schema), SOAP, WSDL and UDDI. Also some history and other technologies were compared. Examples of Web Services were given immediately to show how easy it is to write Web Services in Note Pad and better yet in Visual Studio .NET.

Chapter 3 explained how to consume a Web Service once it is built.

Starting with chapter 4 the conceptual layers were explained in greater details

WSDL and all the sections involved, Wire Formats like SOAP and Custom Techniques.

Finally Web Services Discovery (UDDI) was discussed in chapter 7. All well done.

More advanced subjects were discussed starting with chapter 8 like Design techniques, Asynchronous programming, State management, Transactions, Data Caching, Authentication and SOAP Security. Exposing Data and Serialization etc. Well done also.

I liked reading the case studies using BizTalk Server, Passport-Style Authentication Services, and Distributed Processing, you can find them at the end of the book. I was more interested in the Passport-Style Authentication and Distributed Processing. I did not have time for any examples on the case studies.

Over all this book is very good, and I strongly recommend it. This book explained the material well using the right approach. I found few errors here and there but I have not found a book that is perfect. Most of the examples that I had time to try worked well. This book is NOT only for intermediate and advanced users because if you are a beginner to Web Services and like to be challenged then this book is also for you. ---Reviewed by Gus Aawar

Interesting look at an extraordinary man.......2003-04-24

This biography of World War II's most famous American war correspondant is drawn primarily from letters written to and from Pyle's wife and close friends. Miller quotes these letters throughout the book, and this brings a sense of authenticity to what the author tries to present. The fact that Miller was Pyle's boss and close friend for most of Ernie's adult life also creates a sense of having the inside story to Ernie's life.

Of course as a personal friend Miller somewhat glosses over a few of Ernie's shortcomings, notably his ability to repeatedly leave his tortured wife alone for long stretches of time. But the book is a good introduction to Ernie Pyle and what he meant to the war effort. I read this book prior to reading any of the compilation books of his daily columns, and I'm glad I did because I had some insight into Pyle's perspective on the war and the people who fought in it. This for me made reading his columns even more emotionally moving.

You might want to have the 2nd volume at hand before reading the 1st volume!.......2007-08-31

Somehow, I only discovered these authors' "Liaden" series of very well written space opera with _Balance of Trade_. And this new one was written after that, so I seem to be working backwards. The protagonists this time are, first, M. Jela, a "generalist" and a very unusual sort of soldier, working to try to defeat an ancient enemy that has decided the universe would be a much tidier place without so many people and star systems in it. And it's not at all certain they can be defeated. Second, caught up in this struggle entirely against her will is Cantra vos'Phelium, a very specially-bred human and a ship's pilot of very considerable talent and ability. They come together by accident, join forces by necessity, and gradually come to depend on each other, and it all happens in an entirely believable way. Then there's the third member of the crew -- an intelligent and telepathic tree, rescued from a dying world by Jela. All this seems to have taken place in the distant past, incidently, as seen from the perspective of _Balance of Trade_ -- which makes it a prequel, sort of. The dialogue -- both spoken and unspoken -- is skillfully done and the descriptions are crisp and vivid. The plotting is also nicely thought out. My only complaint is that this is the first half of a two-decker and the ending is very abrupt. I HATE cliffhangers! (Patience, patience. . . .)

ADDENDUM: Okay, having subsequently read all the earlier novels set in the Liaden universe, I now understand that Jela and Cantra are the near-mythic founders of Liad itself, Cantra being the captain of the ship that transports the refugee clans to their new home -- all this subsequent to the action in _Crystal Soldier_ (maybe in the second volume), but a thousand years in the past from the perspective of the _Agent of Change_ sub-series.

Liaden Universe Prequel.......2007-05-17

If you have read any of the earlier books, you have seen references to Jela's Tree - a tree with illusions of mysticism. Get to the root of the mystery in this novel of the early years of the Liaden Universe when Jela first encountered the tree. As always, the authors deliver great characters and intriguing plot lines. This book and its conclusion, Crystal Dragon, are well worth the price!

This story was good and the characters well developed. It kept my interest and provoked interesting thought.

I was waiting for this book, but-.......2005-12-01

I was wanting to see how the Liaden universe had began, but I really didn't get many answers from this book.The plotting is not up to the authors usual pace, and the characters are wooden. I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn't. I will skip the sequel, and wait for the authors to come back to their liaden roots.

Crystal Soldier.......2005-11-29

This book was very enjoyable and my first introduction to the Liaden universe. Despite the numerous reviewers that don't recommend reading this one unless one is already a Liaden fan, I am looking forward to the next installment, Crystal Dragon. Meanwhile, I found some of the previously written books and will read those while I'm waiting. Lee and Miller are excellent authors and they have no difficulty keeping the readers interest, even if one is new to the series. Crystal Soldier is engaging and somewhat intense in spots as it introduces the reader to the complex personalities of Jela and Cantra. I would recommend starting this series wherever one likes, since as far as I can tell, any one of these books may lead to a strong urge to read more.

Snapshots of the Exraordinary Life of Lee Miller.......2007-10-05

It is little wonder that an earlier work on this artist was entitled "The Lives of Lee Miller" since she seems to have packed the living of more than one extraordinary life into her own.

Born in Poughkeepsie, New York 1907. Her father, a keen amateur, photographed her constantly as she was growing up and familiarised her with some of the technical aspects of the art. Serendipity then played a part in what followed as, when crossing a Manhattan street she was `discovered' at 19 by magazine publisher Condé Nast and a modelling career followed. Moving to Paris(1929)she became the assistant, lover, muse and finally a collaborator of Man Ray, also putting in an appearance as a `living statue' in Cocteau's "The Blood of a Poet"(1930) and was a significant figure in the surrealist movement.
She returned to New York in 1932 and established a portrait gallery only to marry and moved to Egypt a couple of years later. Although not working as a photographer during this period she took some of her most arresting images.
In 1937 she returned to Paris and by the outbreak of the Second World War was living in London, beginning the most remarkable phase of her professional life. As a photojournalist she documented the Blitz before becoming the only female photographer to travel with the troops across Europe in the immediate aftermath of D-Day. As well as the liberation of Paris she saw and photographed the horrors of the concentration camps.

Drained by her wartime experiences she essentially retired to a `normal' life in Sussex, before her death in 1977.

This book collects images from all periods of the artist's life and many of the images are by others, either featuring her as a model or as being of influence or importance to the artist's work. I was impressed by the range and quality of Lee Miller's own work, particularly the pre-war pictures, many of which are truly striking. I was already familiar with many, but not all, of the wartime images from the earlier "Lee Miller's War". If it is the wartime images you are interested in it is probably the better buy and I would trade its introduction by David E. Scherman for all the text in this book.
As I mentioned earlier many of the photographs are, of course, of her by others and it is fascinating to see the way she switches from one side of the camera to the other.

The text is well written and insightful, but can be a little dry and scholarly and concentrates its attention very much on the work rather than her life, as a biography "Lee Miller: A Life" would be better here. If there is a criticism to be made, it is that, because for much of her career she was working within constraints placed upon her by her various paymasters/editors a good deal of the material presented is of the more commercial/mundane variety. This, while a significant part of her working life, is given too much weight in the text, and presumably, reproduced at the expense of some of the more interesting images that are occasioally referred to in the text but not displayed.

The book is a good size, the pictures are well reproduced and all the most famous images are here as well as some very striking newer ones. Whether as an introduction to the `lives' of Lee Miller or as an extension to an existing collection this is an excellent work.

Excellent for executives below C level.......2004-08-26

This book is full of information and negotiating strategies that are very useful for more junior executives, where hiring an employment attorney is probably not necessary. It enables you to do a decent job of getting the most you can without going over the line. It is especially good at giving practical examples that can help you make tradeoffs that create win-win outcomes (most negotiating books have this concept but are too abstract). Finally, it is very helpful in making sure you are protected if things don't work out. I bought some of the other recommended books in this category, but they are much too basic if you are an executive.

I bought this book recently when I was changing my job. I was desperate to take the new job and would have taken the job even without negotiation.This book provided me the strategies to increase my salary by almost 10%. The book has several good examples ( that fit very well atleast to my situation ).

A must read even if you are not changing jobs.

Excellent book - The author's approach is very logical and he clearly has the experience to validate his comments. He uses sound principles, excellent examples and memorable quotes. I would definately recommend this book - an excellent book which is hard to put down.

I actually took Prof. Miller for a course in negotiating and he was excellent. If you're not lucky enough to get to see him in person, read this book. He was on the management side and knows what they're thinking. If you incorporate some of these techniques in negotiating your next salary you will come out ahead. Also, most of these techniques can be applied to any negotiation. Read it, you will not be disappointed.

Great book. This book covered everything I needed to know to get a great salary and perks that I would not have thought to ask for. It was very readable and the advice was easy to use. I would recommend this book to anyone changing jobs.

Iam going to refrain from using certain words but this is the worse book i have every read. This is not for beginners. Doesn't really explain anything clearly. It just tells you to input the code and some of it doesn't even work. get another book

C++ Express is a good introduction to windows development........2007-04-08

I am a Visual Basic novice programmer that wanted to learn how to do the same task in Visual C++. This book provides a good introduction. It does not cover some of the topics that are needed to have a solid understanding of the features of the Visual development enviroment such as connecting to databases, deploying your finished appliction, or using multi interface forms. Nevertheless, I recommend it for someone that wants to get a quick grasp of how to use the Visual develoment features. The book does not teach hard core C++. If you want to learn how to build windows applications this book is what you want.

I must warn everyone that the error list (Errata sheet) that is needed for this book is very long. I am amazed that the publisher allowed this book to be released with the amount of errors in this book. I spent a considerable amount of time correcting errors. I even had to correct the code in one of the programs for the book that I downloaded from the publisher's web site! One error is so extensive that I could not simply write the corrections in the book. I had to print it out and leave the page in the book. The amount of errors was a big disappointment.

I read in the other reviews about the amount of errors in this book. However, I could not find any other books on the express edition of Visual C++; so, I ordered this one.

I would recommend the book for begginners and people interested to learn from zero how to program in Visual C++. It should be the first programming language book to someone starting to study Visaul C++

What a mess!.......2006-12-29

This is the worst computer book I have bought in some time. It's biggest problem is typos and errors. There are several pages of errata on the web site and I've found another several pages as I have worked through the example programs in the book. The book also has examples that are way too long to make the point that needs to be made to learn what is featured in a given chapter. The book is also very disorganized. The authors continually refer to information that they are going to explain in future chapters but they never really do. The book also really doesn't explain a lot of what is going on. The book is very basic but someone without programming experience is not going to have their questions answered. I would strongly recommend people try another book.

The book gives a good grip on first time look at what a visual c++ version 2005 is and what can it do express! A good jumpstart to learning Visual C++ 2005.

Great Story in Liaden Universe.......2005-10-01

I am new to the Liaden universe and have, over the past several weeks, read all the novels I could get my hands on. "Pilots Choice" was my first introduction to the novels and I found both stories very entertaining, containing action, romance and humor. Being a hugh fan of Georgette Heyer, having read all of her work, I was drawn to the Liaden stories when another reviewer made an anaolgy between the two styles of writing. I highly recommend Pilots Choice for anyone who enjoys a great story, with interesting characters, who you can get to know quickly. Highest praise to Sharon Lee & Steve Miller - why can't we find these great books at our local book store?

Pilot's Choice is an omnibus of two novels: Local Custom & Scout's Progress, both of which are prequels to Partners in Necessity.

Local Custom: Er Thom yos'Galan, Master Trader and Heir to Clan Korval knew his duty to his clan - to provide the Clan with a child of his own body. He also knew that he could never offer a contract wife the care and attention his honor demanded until he had seen Anne Davis one last time. Then he would seek the Healers on Liad and they would erase all of his memories of the woman who had captured his heart...

Anne, a Terran and brilliant linguist had met Er Thom years before and had a wonderful affair with him, falling head over heels in love, but knowing that he would leave her, as he had. What Anne did not tell Er Thom was that she bore his child, her precious Shan. She never expected to see Er Thom again and was stunned when he walked in to her apartment. They both found that their love was as deep and fierce as it had ever been and Er Thom found that he did not know how to say goodbye. She learned to feign meekness and remain quiet except when she was teaching her advanced math class to the irrepressible pilots in training at the academy. When one of her pilot students convinced her to play a game of chance at a new gaming palace, Aelliana used her math skills to beat the cardshark and found herself the proud owner of a ship - and her chance to leave Liaden forever...

But before Aelliana could leave Liaden, she had to get her pilot's license. Luckily, she was docked at Binjali's, where the pilots were irreverent and surprising, but genuinely friendly. Before she knew it, Aelliana found herself adopted in to a kind of family where her skills were valued and her opinion was asked. She quickly found herself looking forward to her lessons with Master Pilot Daav, who challenged her to become more and to take risks. What she did not know was that her quirky co-pilot was in fact Daav yos'Phelium, the Delm of Korval and arguably the most powerful man on the planet. She also did not know that Daav was in negotiations for a contract marriage or she never would have let herself fall in love with him....

I found the Liaden culture fascinating and loved learning more about the customs and mindset of these people. Lee and Miller have done a fabulous job at creating this universe and making their characters absolutely believable. I loved all of the characters and felt that I could identify with all of them in a different way. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses and all of them had their own part to play in the game. Although the romance of the two main characters in each book is a large part of the plot, the world building, the characterization, attention to detail and the excellent quality of writing kept me absolutely riveted - I couldn't put this book down!

Good Start.......2003-12-02

This was my first foray into the Liaden universe and I can honestly say I enjoyed it immensely. Both novels had me hooked by the last 100 pages of each. This book does a good job of forming the universe, I feel like I have an understanding of the conventions in which the characters have to work. My disclaimer for this review is that I like SF not necessarily Romance.

At first I thought I would prefer Scout's Progress to Local Custom because SP on the surface has more SF elements to its plotting. After reading both, I actually preferred LC to SP. It is primarily due to the fact that LC has superior characterizations and a more engaging premise. All in all for me, a well written, richly detailed and superb characterization is more important than which genre fits best.

The Liaden universe (at least in these 2 novels) is filled w/ damsels in distress and knights in shining armor. A little cliched for my tastes especially SP. I find myself wondering about the misogynistic undertones of the stories. I will definitely read more in the series before coming to any conclusions, however, these two books are definitely leaning in that direction.

An interesting read, but I believe I haven't read the best that these authors have to offer yet. I am looking forward to reading them more.

...to this amazing universe. I have read this particualr omnibus, (as well as Partners in Necessity) probably 4 times in the past year-and-a-half, not only for the sheer enjoyment of the stories but for the added insights/revelations I continue to glean about the main characters and their world(s). The authors have done a fabulous job of character/society/world-building that immerses the reader completely.
Admittedly, I initially favored "Scout's Progress" over "Local Custom", but my most recent rereading made me realize that although each is a fine stand alone novel in its own right, the two complement and complete each other perfectly, much like Er Thom and Anne, Daav and Aelianna. I have become increasingly selective of the titles I purchase; I love books that I get the urge to pick up and read again every year or so. These have me diving back in within a matter of months. Buy this series if you enjoy intelligent, rollicking space opera, romantic but not cloyingly so, with an undercurrent of ever-present danger and potential violence.

Addendum: To be fair, there were one or two small plot holes that I felt weren't adequately resolved, but in the overall scheme of things, the excellent storytelling renders them insignificant.

Very Good! Very, Very Good!.......2003-04-24

PILOTS CHOICE is a compilation of two independent novels, LOCAL CUSTOM and SCOUT' PROGRESS. What can be said of these two stories?! For those of you, like me, new or unfamiliar to the Liaden Universe created by Ms. Lee and Mr. Miller all I can say is be welcome! Loaded with romance, adventure, action and just a bit of comedy these stories have everything for the escapist in you.

The universe created here is wonderfully new and fresh. The characters interesting, likable and extremely well constructed. The romance, yes I like romance so there, is hart tugging, believable and, well, fun!

Although these are two independent novels they SHOULD be read together and I'll bet after you finish you won't be able to wait to get your hands on PARTNERS IN NECESSARY (even better than PILOTS CHOICE!) These are great stories that shouldn't be missed.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! You bet!

A Letter from Anne McCaffrey about Crystal Dragon:

Every now and then you come across an author, or in this case, a pair, who write exactly what you want to read, the characters and personalities that make you enjoy meeting them. Apart from my passion for Kim by Rudyard Kipling, I had read some authors whose books I would buy the moment they came on sale (thanks to Amazon's policy and pre-ordering facility) and then there are the precious few who sit in honor on my comfort shelf. The books I reach for when something in life has become intolerable. And I rediscover the joy that had infused me at the first reading. Such a book was "Agent of Change" first published by Del Rey. When I had finished, hungering for more, I got in touch with Shelly Shapiro, my editor at Del Rey and, prayers answered, she had the manuscript for "Conflict of Honors" on her desk. I beseeched her to send me a copy asap…my hunger for more of the Liaden Universe so intense. She did. However, I had to wait for the third of that first series: "Carpe Diem!"

I found out that Steve and Sharon had published chap books on the Liaden universe, Val Con and Miri Roberson, Shan yos `Galan and Priscilla. Sharon and Steve are always throwing you quips like that and reading them is all the more enjoyable for them. So I bought those as they were published. Some of them are now also published in hard cover. The only trouble with the chap books is that while they sort out one problem, or elaborate on a special character, they are not very long.

Then I discovered that Meisha Merlin was going to continue the series. I was delighted to get a hard-cover of "Partners in Necessity" which is the three single titles mentioned above…then we have more good chunks of Liaden in "Pilot's Choice" which contains the two titles "Local Custom" and "Scout's Progress". Following them, is "Plan B", which has the most devious plot and then on to "I Dare". Which is gorgeous. And then, for dessert, "Balance of Trade"…and the tales of "Low Port".

What fascinates me most about Lee and Miller as a team is how well blended they are, with a structured society that is almost Chinese in its adherence to custom…the graciousness of the language is always a delight (something I wish I had phrased as aptly). I can certainly see the Tree in my mind's eye, spreading its ancient leaves over the valley it protects and the people it cherishes. And now these authors have come up with another pair of characters and a new chapter in the history of Liaden…"Crystal Soldier". Better yet, it says on the title page Book One of the Great Migration Duology. So, Happy Day, it means another book is coming "Crystal Dragon". Hurrrah. The hero is M. Jela Granthor's Guards, and the heroine is Cantra: names which will have significance to those who have already entered the magic of Liaden.

I rarely rave on and on about stories, but I am devoted to Lee and Miller novels and stories. Start at the beginning, dear reader, and you will be rewarded with a sanctuary you can escape to, as I do when this world we're stuck with is impossible to endure.

When the other review says "There is a prologue story in Crystal Dragon that has been known to convince people that they picked up the wrong book - but keep reading, it will make sense" -- they were really right. I almost dropped the book back in the library return without finishing it.

This is a prequel novel, a foundation novel that explains about as much as it obscures. Once it gets moving the writing is tight, the characters make sense and you get a feel for how a universe could come up empty and how everything was before everything was.

Not an enjoyable read- certainly way Below others in this series.....disjointed - hard to hold on to the main "story Line"....seems like this all could have been in a synopsis of 1-2 chapters or one of their "magazine" phamplets.........kind of like boy meets girl- boy marries girl- one dies the other goes on - the enemy "vanquished- sort of. so forth and so on and on and on......but the reader does learn a bit more about Jela, Cantra and the founding of Clan Korval in between alot of gobblety gook.....but characters not developed well at all to hold your interest.

The beginnings of the Liaden Universe.......2006-07-14

Lee and Miller's Liaden universe never fails to enchant, and this latest book answers all of the reader's questions about the beginnings of the story very satisfactorily. The characters sweep the reader up and take him along on their adventures; sharing along the way their joys and sadness. An excellent read.
