Customer Reviews:
Dover's reprints most of the time are outstanding!.......2005-07-30
Sure, there can occasionally be problems with reprints of older editions (and I've seen some quite poor ones at that, notably with Belwin-Kalmus!); however, this one of Dover (as well as their reprint of the same composer's opera "Pelléas et Mélisande") is not one I'd slight in the least. My copy has very few problems indeed. I recommend this one unreservedly!
The Problem with Reprints.......2004-02-07
As the earlier reviewer pointed out, this Dover edition is a reprint of the orginal Durand score issued in the first decade of the 20th century. The downside of a reprint edition, especially from French publishers, who had a very distinctive engraving style, is that stems and staves tend to disappear in places, which makes it hard to read. Even so, Dover does a great service by making this masterpiece (I don't use that term lightly!) available at a reasonable price. If you really want to have a clean modern engraving, you'll have to shell out more than $100 for the cloth-bound critical edition.
Dissapointing printing.......2003-06-22
The music is of course fantastic, but I was dissapointed by the quality of the printing in this volume. Sometimes note stems are virtually nonexistent, and the very small verbal instructions are almost impossible to read. The reason for this is not Dover's fault; it's because this book was printed directly from ancient master plates of the original French editions. In fact, all of Dover's "reproductions of old French editions" series seem to share the same problems. Yet none of Dover's German editions has the problem. Oh well, I guess all I can say is: Let the Buyer Beware.

The Life of Debussy (Musical Lives)

Book Description
Claude Debussy's Paris was factionalized, politicized, and litigious. It was against this background of ferment and change--which characterized French society and music from the Franco-Prussian War to World War I--that Debussy re-thought music. This book captures the complexity of the composer's restless personal and artistic identity within the new picture emerging of the musical, social, and political world of fin-de-siècle Paris.
Debussy's setting did not simply mold his style. Rather, it challenged him to define a style and then to revamp it again and again as he situated himself simultaneously via the present and the past. These essays trace Debussy's perpetual reinvention, both social and creative, from his earliest to his last works. They explore tensions and contradictions in his best-known compositions and examine lesser-known pieces that reveal new aspects of Debussy's creative appropriation from poetry, painting, and non-Western music.
The contributors reveal the extent to which Debussy's personal and professional lives were intertwined and sometimes in conflict. Belonging to no one group or class, but crossing many, Debussy abjured the orthodox. A maverick who reviled all convention and searched for a music that authentically reflected experience, Debussy balked at entering any situation--salons, musical societies, or factions--that would categorize and thus distort him. Because of this, music lovers still argue over the degree to which Debussy's music is Impressionist, symbolist, or even French. Aptly, the volume's editor reads Debussy's last works as a dialogue with himself that reflects his inherently pluralistic, paradoxical, negotiated, and ever-changing identity.
William Austin's description of Debussy as ''one of the most original and adventurous musicians who ever lived'' is often repeated. This book illustrates how right Austin was and shows why Debussy's unclassifiable art continues to fascinate and perplex his historians even as it enthralls new listeners. The contributors are Leon Botstein, Christophe Charle, John Clevenger, Jane F. Fulcher, David Grayson, Brian Hart, Gail Hilson-Woldu, and Marie Rolf.

Pelleas et Melisande in Full Score
ASIN: 0521314461 |
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive guide to Pelleas et Melisande, Debussy's only completed opera, written by three of the leading authorities on French music of the period.
As a background to the opera Richard Langham Smith discusses the play, by the Belgian playwright Maeterlinck, and considers its literary roots. David Grayson then traces the genesis and composition of the opera, examining also the sketches and rejected versions in order to illuminate Debussy's compositional strategies. A detailed synopsis by Roger Nichols, which considers carefully Debussy's musical response to the text, forms a central chapter. Following this, the book moves on to consider more detailed aspects of the style and language of the opera. The relationship between symbols and musical motives forms the basis of a chapter by Richard Langham Smith and his subsequent chapter considers the crucial themes of darkness and light and the key-schemes used to portray them.
Two chapters by Roger Nichols on the various performances since 1902 and on the ideas of interpreters and commentators complete the text. The book concludes with a detailed bibliography and a discography.

Book Description
The early music of Claude Debussy was influenced by the work of Wagner, for whom he had great admiration. However, soon Debussy's music became more experimental and individualistic, as is clear in his first mature work Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Debussy quickly moved away from traditional techniques and produced the pictures in sound that led his work to be described as "musical Impressionism." This new biography--the first in English in 30 years--offers new insights into the life of this enigmatic composer, revealing a figure more seminal and revolutionary than previously thought.
Customer Reviews:
Too Concise, Dry and Dull.......2003-10-20
This is unfortunately, a 'too' concise biography of Debussy which never really gives a sense of what the man was like, or the impact of his music on the twentieth century. A disappointment after a good experience with another book in the Cambridge music series.
too short for such a major musical figure.......2001-01-14
It is unfortunate that there is not more available on Debussy in English. This book, at only 167 pages (including pictures) hardly does him justice. Because it is so short, the book jumps from topic to topic at an alarming pace, hardly giving any details. The author's convoluted writing style does not help matters either. Unlike many other musical (or otherwise) biographies I've read, this one did not leave me satisfied. Hopefully the out-of-print book department will have something more complete on Debussy.
Depressed Composer.......2000-06-30
C. Debussy seems to have led a tortured and beleaguered life. His ideas regarding music were in conflict with the French music establishment. This created problems for him both professionally and personally. Financially, he struggled all of his life. Coming from rather humble beginnings, C. Debussy had a particular vision of music early in his career. He was blunt and identified with the impressionistic painters as well as the symbolist poets. These artists were to become popular much later. Debussy died young at the age of 55 of cancer. This biography is a little choppy in it writing style, but it does offer many examples of his ideas on many subjects.

Superb one-volume edition of two influential compositions noted for individuality, unique interpretations of the medium, delicate and subtle beauties. Based on authoritative French editions, this clearly printed volume is sturdily bound for long life on the music stand.
Customer Reviews:
The only one to buy..........2006-11-03
If you are considering playing either of these difficult quartets, you need this score. The spacing of notes is excellent and helpful as the rhythms are often complex. The score is large enough to play from at the piano. A Glossary of French Terms is included which is helpful as not all the musical instructions are found in standard music dictionaries.
Excellent reference.......2003-01-01
This is the definitely the edition to buy if you're studying/playing either of these two quartets. It's a reprint of the Durand edition, so it's about as official as you can get. and CHEAP, too! It's a nice small size- sort of halfway between a normal paperback book and a standard big Dover score.
Good Source!.......2001-12-30
Good to get the Debussy/Ravel String Quartet Cd, Emerson of course, and this handy book.
Good for composition to study and easy to open.
Go for it~!

Book Description
This is the first paperback edition of Roy Howat’s stimulating and provocative study of Debussy’s unorthodox use of musical form. Throught detailed analyses of the piano pieces Reflets dans l’eau and L’isle joyeuse and the symphonic poem La mer, Dr Howat shows how the pieces are built precisely and intricately around the two ratios of Golden Section and bisection so that the music is organised in various geometrical patterns which contribute substantially to its expansive and dramatic impact. The final chapter traces evidence of whether the proportional systems were designed consciously, and if so, where and why Debussy might have learnt such techniques. The evidence includes his involvement in the Symbolist movement and in esotericism.

Many of the most admired of Debussy's piano works, reprinted from authoritative French editions, among them the Etudes (1915), and the magical Children's Corner (1906–8). Also includes Nocturne (1892), Piece pour piano (1903–4), Images, Book II (1907), Hommage a Haydn (1910), The Little Nigar (1909), La plus que lente (1910), Elegie (1915), more.
Customer Reviews:
Great Edition for the Price.......2006-04-24
This edition includes a lot of great Debussy music, including La Plus que Lente, Children's Corner, and the Etudes. The book is worth it for the Etudes alone, which were written towards the end of Debussy's life and which are simply amazing. They are as masterful as Chopin's etudes, in my opinion. I recommend buying both this and the other Dover edition of Debussy piano music to have basically (or actually, but I haven't checked to be absolutely sure) everything that Debussy wrote for solo piano.
Some of Debussy's best music.......2003-05-20
For years, due to copywrite issues, "The Children's Corner" suite was only available in a French edition. Now it's here, in an affordale Dover edition, along with some rarer piano solos.
"Children's Corner" ranges from playable ("Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum" and "The Little Shepherd" and "Doll's Lullaby" to the evilly tricky "Snow is Dancing" made famous by Tomita in an electronic version. The suite was written for Debussy's daughter and is utterly charming and really fun to play. The etude's from Book II are incomplete here, but have some of the nices works, along with a beautiful berceuse.
If you play piano and love the Impressionist composers, this is a must-have.

Debussy: Complete Preludes, Books 1 and 2.......2006-02-27
So far in the playing through this album: an excellent compilation of favorite Debussy piano pieces. Thoroughly enjoyable. Clear pages and easy to read.
good for reading, bad for playing.......2003-12-10
This is an affordable book that is fine for following along while listening to the music being played by someone else, but very frustrating to play from for oneself. The book does not open flat on a piano stand, and keeps falling when the pages are turned. It needs constant propping up by other books, which interrupts passages that have not been memorized (especially for non-professional pianists like me with a poor memory). The Schirmer editions are a bit better in this regard, and the Peters and Kalmus editions open even more flatly than the Schirmer volumes. I will not buy a Dover piano book again for playing -- only if I intend merely to follow a score while listening. Dover editions are cheap compared with those published by other companies, but you get what you pay for.
Great Composer, Great Value.......2003-08-03
The Preludes of Debussy are from a different planet. The sounds that he got from the piano are still like no other composer, even after over 100 years since their composition. Dover yet again has printed a most economical edition that is very affordable for the pianist that would like to delve into these gems. Recommended!
Piano essential for advanced students.......2002-10-20
This is one of those sets that I think, if I were stranded on a desert island with a Steinway (and a good piano tuner), I could delve into for years with little other music.
These short pieces are excellent for sight-reading difficult passages with many key changes and unexpected accidentals, for intricate harmony and for expression of mood. The names are evocative of feelings and sights, such as an underwater cathedral, bells in the evening air, wind through heather and the like.
Though short pieces of a few pages, each provides a particular challenge to the piano student, as well as being appropriate for concert encores or intimate playing.
