"We are a sleep-sick society," says William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. According to Dr. Dement, "sleep science" has yielded a great deal of scientific knowledge about sleep--yet the general public, and even doctors, aren't aware of it. Sleep disorders are routinely misdiagnosed or ignored, sometimes resulting in medical tragedy and death, frequently leading to chronic exhaustion. In The Promise of Sleep, Dr. Dement aims to remedy that by making the latest sleep information accessible to health professionals and lay readers. He describes the sleep cycle and gives a short history of sleep research. Then he dives into clear and detailed explanations of concepts and conditions we've all heard about, but that few of us understand: sleep debt, biological clock, circadian rhythm, insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy. He discusses why we need sleep (sounds obvious, but it isn't) and the role of dreams. After 300 pages of sleep facts, Dr. Dement teaches you how to "reclaim healthy sleep" in your own life. You learn to assess your personal sleep situation by keeping a sleep diary, measuring your sleep debt, and evaluating your risk of sleep disorders; find appropriate treatment; manage sleep crises; and adopt a "sleep-smart lifestyle." A three-week "sleep camp" program at the end helps you put all the strategies together. This book will put you to sleep--and that's meant as praise! --Joan Price
Book Description
Sleep better, live longer with the groundbreaking information and step-by-step program in this revolutionary book.
Healthful sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important factor in predicting longevity, more influential than diet, exercise, or heredity. And yet we are a sleep-sick society, ignorant of the facts of sleep--and the price of sleep deprivation. In this groundbreaking book, based on decades of study on the frontiers of sleep science, Dr. William Dement, founder and director of the Stanford University Sleep Research Center, explains what happens when we sleep, when we don't, and how we can reclaim the most powerful--and underrated--health miracle of all.
Taking us on a fascinating tour of our sleeping body and mind, Dr. Dement reveals the price we have paid for ignoring sleep--an epidemic of heart disease, 33 percent of traffic-fatigue-related accidents, and immeasurable mental and psychological disadvantages. And he offers a hands-on prescription for vibrant good health and longevity, including...self-tests to determine how much sleep you really need...the role of prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids...the latest research on how sleep affects the immune system...how to combat insomnia, snoring, and jet lag...plus information on sleep disorder clinics nationwide, Web sites, and more.

Invaluable health info.......2007-07-22
The author is one of the pioneers of sleep research, totally in command of his subject and it's surprising exactly how important sleep is in a healthy lifestyle. My only complaint: I would have preferred more sleep research results and less sleep research.
Wonderful work.......2007-01-19
"After all the research I've done on sleep problems over the past four decades, my most significant finding is that ignorance is the worst sleep disorder of them all."
A half century of work combined to create a unique perspective. The first chapters deal with the basics: what sleep is and what we know about it. The next chapters deal with biology and sleep debt; causes: such as insomnia, apnea, narcolepsy, and fatigue; the effects: on the immune system and mood; dreams; personal needs; children; lifestyle. The appendix contains a list of sleep centers in each state.
"People need to change the way they sleep and live."
My sleep problems were brought on by personal troubles and trying to run a business 24/7; simplification was the answer. Excellent book; highly recommended, even for those just interested in the subject.
"Healthy sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important determination in predicting longevity."
Wish you well

Important reference, too long, a bit dated.......2007-01-09
If you have just become interested in sleep disorders and want to know the foundations, this book is likely a must read by a pioneer in the field. The author makes a strong case that the medical issues of humans during the night is much undervalued in current practice. However, the book is too long, and is written in an inefficient and chatty style that doesn't have an obvious organizational structure to it. This makes it hard to use as a reference for the serious reader and a bit too ponderous for the casual lay reader. Furthermore, after reading other references and recent sleep and medical literature, it is likely that the author's rigid theory of a sleep deficit, and other major conclusions, are matters of current debate. The book, therefore, is a bit dated.
The Best! My insomnia has been gone for years now.......2006-11-21
I had a bad case of insomnia which after reading this book and following its principles has never returned
Thoroghly and well written by The Man of Sleep himself........2006-11-03
Dement tells us himself how the study of sleep got started and took off, but then how scientists now are not giving sleep the attention it deserves. Sleep deprivation leads to depression, listlessness, lack of motivation, decreased alertness, and possible involuntary sleep episodes (falling asleep at the wheel, sleep apnea, etc.). Missed sleep is not made up by sleeping more the next day/night but rather accumulates over days and months until one has a vast accumulation of "sleep debt". This is proven through scientific studies as Dement iterates in his text. Helpful and informative, this is the book for anyone suffering from lack of sleep and is the foremost book on the subject of sleep for psychological courses focused on sleep & sleep disorders. Also includes Freud's and Jung's explanations of why we dream.
Book Description
"God has set before me two great objects: the abolition of the slave trade and the reformation of manners." These immortal words penned by William Wilberforce in 1787 were the beginning of his lifelong crusade as a Christian statesman and philanthropist. He became a member of the British Parliament for his hometown of Hull in 1780 and represented Yorkshire in 1784, a seat he retained until 1812.
This moving biography of Wilberforce tells the story of his religious conversion in 1784 and his rise to leadership of the Clapham Sect-a group of evangelicals active in political, philanthropic, and religious causes. Under his leadership, the "Saints," as they were called, championed parliamentary and prison reforms, missionary endeavors, Bible distribution, and a host of other charitable efforts and organizations. These causes included the Church Missionary Society (established in 1799) and the British and foreign Bible Society (founded in 1804).
Statesman and Saint also describes Wilberforce's unrelenting forty-year crusade against slavery, in spite of many defeats in Parliament. He labored for eighteen years to secure the abolition of the slave trade, enduring personal criticism, deep-seated prejudice, and threats on his life for another twenty-six years before he saw the Emanicipation Bill finally passed in July 1833. His influential book, A Practical View, laid the foundation for the moral elevation of the Victorian Era that folowed his death only three days after the Emancipation Bill was passed in Parliament.

Useful for Christian schools, homeschoolers, and church groups.......2007-07-03
Modern Americans often wonder if it is possible for a politician to remain a strong Christian after being elected to office and subjected to political havoc. The life of William Wilberforce proves it is not only possible, but also very good for the country. Interest catching and capably written, Statesman and Saint presents this biography in a clear-cut, triumphant manner. No punches are pulled, no whitewashing, and all glory given to the Lord. Adding to the interest are Vaughan's descriptions of life in England, especially in English politics in the 18th century. The alcoholism, immorality, and extreme self-interest of that era sound very similar to our era. Little tidbits relating to the American colonies add interest, such as Wilberforce' belief that the English were waging the revolutionary war in a "cruel, bloody and impractical manner" (p. 43).
By the year 1784, Wilberforce, then 24, was popular with society and a rising star in the political arena. Then in 1785, the Lord took over Wilberforce' life and thence forward many of the problems in London, pre-eminently the question of the legality of slavery. History buffs will meet many 18th century friends, including John Newton and William Pitt. Part 1 of Statesman and Saint presents Wilberforce' life, while Part 2 takes a candid look at his character. Part 3 considers the benefits humanity has reaped from Wilberforce' work and Part 4 draws lessons for our Christian growth.
Statesman and Saint is one of the volumes of the Leaders in Action series - just imagine, a whole group of Christian statesmen to encourage us! Statesman and Saint is as interesting as a novel. Well worth reading for enjoyment, this book will also provide devotional material and Christian life lessons. I recommend it for all readers middle school through adult, who are interested in history and/or Christian heroes, or just a good story. This volume will be useful for Christian schools, homeschoolers, and church groups. - Donna Eggett, Christian Book Previews.com
the source of his greatness.......2003-09-29
The strength of this biography is its coverage of Wilberforce's means of greatness, namely his deeply held personal faith. Wilberforce is most famous for his tireless work to end the British slave trade, which he accomplished, but should also be remembered for persevering another 25 years for the full emancipation of all British slaves. In addition, his monumental work on the reformation of manners still remains a classic treatment of living a life of faith in every facet of life. Wilberforce maintained that it was not enough to act like a Christian on Sunday and to keep up appearances of morality; instead, he believed that one's faith must permeate every area of life and that faith preceded great deeds and sustained a humble spirit in the face of success. In addition, this biography deals with areas of personal struggle and criticism as faced by Wilberforce and how he overcame them with humility and determination. All in all, this is a fine biography and is also a shorter read than several other Wilberforce biographies on the market. The reader interested in Wilberforce may also like Kevin Belmonte's book, Hero for Humanity, since it is written in a more narrative style and reads like a story of Wilberforce's life. For a technical treatment of Wilberforce, one may want to consult John Pollock's, Wilberforce.
Adequate, but not outstanding.......2003-01-17
Wilberforce is a monumental figure. Vaughan does a good job of portraying many of the qualities that made Wilberforce the moral giant that he was. However, I would have appreciated a more straightforward biography than a thematic approach based on Wilberforce's virtues and leadership skills.

Wonderful images, disappointing presentation.......2007-02-07
You will find no image within this book presented as enticingly as the front cover. There is way, way too much text, competing for space with the images.
I will never understand why publishers do this: choose a reasonably large format for a book because of the visual basis of the subject and then fill up most of the pages with text, so that the images are reduced and are crowded round with it: it shows a complete lack of understanding of how images work.
This is especially annoying as I'm sure most people who might buy this book would be interested primarily in the images of Samuel Palmer, not the thoughts of various art historians.
There are about a ten or so images which show how the book might have been presented, but only two details which use the full page (and even these are only used to divide the book into sections and so have 'Part One' and 'Part Two' spread across them).
I was hoping for a book which might replace my Raymond Lister book on Palmer, which is smaller but grants a full page to each image, and so allows it to breathe. But this new book has been a bit of a disappointment.
So, still worth getting, but sadly not as good as it might have been.
The scope and depth of Samuel Palmer's vision........2006-03-19
This is surely the most wide-ranging collection of Palmer's work in an illustrated book, of his scetches, paintings and etchings. Furthermore the accompanying essays by experts are excellent.

Last Call for an Old Spy?.......2007-06-13
William F. Buckley Jr has entertained readers for twenty years with the exploits of Blackford Oakes, CIA spy extraordinaire. In what will be the final Oakes novel by Buckley, Oakes is summoned out of semi-retirement for one last mission.
The setting for the novel is 1987. President Ronald Reagan dispatches Oakes to the Soviet Union to thwart an attempt on President Gorbachev's life. In the process, Oakes becomes romantically involved with a lovely Russian dissident and then embroiled in a bitter conflict with his arch-nemesis, the traitor Kim Philby. The struggle between the two master spies is absolutely ruthless and can only ended by death.
The novel wanders from the United States to exotic locales in Russia, Mexico, and Cuba as Buckley tours the battlefields of the waning Cold War. In literate, knowing fashion, he manages to weave in appearences by a variety of real-life personalities. In the process, he also manages to roll up the loose ends of Oakes' long and adventurous life.
This novel is recommended to fans of William F. Buckley Jr's spy fiction, especially those curious about the fate of Blackford Oakes. In the acknowledgements, Buckley does leave a faint hint about future possibilities by one of his collaborators.
Starting at the End.......2006-07-02
This is my first Blackford Oakes book and it happens to be the last in the series. So, I am happily looking forward to reading all the others. And if this was one of the weakest of that series, as other reviewers here allege, it looks like I'm in for some great reading because I found this to be a most delightful book -- well-written, good plot, good characterization. Fascinating look at how things worked -- or didn't -- in twilight Soviet Russia. I think I'm going to like Oakes as a protagonist as I plow through the other books. All in all, it was a good and rewarding read.
I hate to give a favorite author only three stars........2006-04-05
First, I must say that I bow to no one as a number one William F. Buckley fan. I have read his books since the sixties, many of which are autographed, reviewed some for the Roanoke newspaper getting his column published in this area and subscribed to National Review. I admit his thinking has shaped many of my own ideas as an educator and political activist. So Bill, forgive me. I cannot endorse "Last Call for Blackford Oaks".
I was delighted when Bill Buckley introduced us to the Blackford Oaks series, and considered his spy novels better than most on the market. As a character I felt Oaks was better than James Bond and cleverer than Sherlock Holmes. Why he chose to write "Last Call for Blackford Oaks" I have no idea. Yes, it is fast moving, yes the dialogue is pure and concise and descriptions are accurate and well done. I especially liked his going into the historical background of the Soviet Union and of course his handling of President Ronald Reagan. Gorbachev is shown for the fraud he was. Though in 1987 and 1988 when "the evil empire" was winding down, the spy apparatus was in full swing. Kim Philby was still a major factor.
The plot is well handled and the book is a joy up until the end. To my surprise the ending is rather contrived and one thinks that Bill Buckley is trying to do what Ian Fleming and Sir Arthur Canon Doyle tried and failed to do. James Bond dies at the end of two novels and Sherlock Holmes at the end of one story. Then somehow they come alive. So be warned Bill, Blackford may prove, as did those fictional characters, it is not easy to kill off a well loved fictional character.
Bad End to a Good Series.......2006-02-10
Fans of the Blackford Oakes novels may wish to simply skip this book, which ends the series on a depressing note and which seems to have been written with total disregard for what has come before it. In the opening of the previous Oakes novel, A Very Private Plot, Blackford and his wife Sally are, in 1995, about to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary; in this book, which starts in 1987, Sally has already been dead for months. I understand that authors of a series that lasts for decades may need to contract or expand the aging process to fit the needs of a plot (and the use of this device in, say, the Matt Helm or 87th Precinct series has never bothered me a bit), but people who are dead should not be allowed to reappear years later. (Sally is not the only one who rises from the dead, but I won't give away any more plot points.) This book also seems to lack the literary panache of earlier Buckley novels. This is not a terrible book, but, like a TV series that overstays its welcome, there are, I think, one too many books in this series. Buckley should have quit while he was ahead.
Goodby.......2005-08-30
Not the usual command of the English language that Buckley usually had. Maybe due to a ghost writer??
It was time for Blackford to die.

Visually and textually informing.......2002-07-10
What some may see as just another pretty artsy coffee table book will be missing a truly educational experience. THE ARTIST'S MODEL, though a catalogue of sorts accompanying an exhibition in England in 1999, is a fine historical documentation about the role of the live model in representational painting from the early 19th Century to the present. Logically divided into four sections - 'From Academy to Art School', 'The Studio Model', 'Models and Muses', and 'The Naked and the Nude' - the four writers deliver historical data accompanied by copious visual examples. Here are all of the well know British figurative artists as well as some lesser lights that deserve more attention. Yes, the book delivers the expected gossip of which artists did what with which models in a wonderfully British tone. But more important is the survey of how the models in the academies and schools moved from being solely male to almost exclusively female and the sociological changes that accompanied this odd transition.
This book overflows with beautiful illustrations, but it doesn't stop at images: each painting depicted is accompanied by a bit of history about the artist AND the model and the way in which this example illustrates each author's premise. This is a wise, informed, and thouroughly entertaining book that deserves greater attention.
A Muse a Day.......2000-03-27
The artists model is a subject that always causes controversy. They are always the important but forgoten subject. Yet in figurative painting and drawing, it is the artists's model that either makes or breaks an Artist. The execution of form, the visual representation: realistic or abstract tangible or symbolic are all due to the relationship the artist has with his model, whether the artist and the model have been able to build a mutal rapport. Most books on the subject of artists's model have in fact been mere glamourous biograhies of the more famous sitters, like Elizabeth Siddal, Fanny Comforth, Gwen John, sister of Augustus John and an artist in her own right, expressing the model as a sexually available mistress or muse! Little was said of the diversitty of of the models's lives, and the atrocious conditions of their work which was usually arduous, mundane and poorly paid. Maybe little has been said because a lot of the models were sexually available as mistresses and some of them of them made poor muses, but most looked great nude; on canvas at least! Here is abook that gives a fantastic account of what the Artist's model life was like; from the social, economic,; and ideological conditions that underpinned perceptions of the model in Britain who worked from 1830's to the 1950's. The book holds true to the various artist's work and we really are given a "behind the picture" look, an account of what it was like to be 'an artist's model'. The opening chapters look at the debates surrounding the role of life drawing in art education, the use of he model as a subjct for painting and literature, the changing status of the nude within the context of artistic movements, and the social reaction to the morality of such depiction. Why the founding ethos of the Royal Academy in the 18th c, gave way to Victorian crusading and undermined art and its history as taught let alone as an ideal. There is an intereseting section which looks at the physics of the artist's studio, where it is all to apparent that the claas divide and the economic necessity of modelling was exploited, that the working class model was given seperate acess to tyhe studio to that as that of any of the other classes, that even the changing room was secluded so that the liasons between artist and model took place within the secrecy and innocence of the studio. Naturally, it has been maintained , that every effort was taken to make sure that no impropriety took place. Why then were so many models also mistresses? The book portray's the succcesful and not so sucessful. Those for whom modelling brought wealth and fame, those whose lives were destroyed. The book also charts the decline in the use of the model due to the rise of abstract and conceptual art styles. And paradoxically, covers the re-emergence of the model in recent years due to the ggrowing influence of modern figurative painting. Contempoary models are better educated, healthier, and will hopefully, avoid the trap of their Victorian counterparts. The Victorian model, though introduced to to High Art and Profound Ideas., show only to well how they became victims and were easily discarded. Would any of the artists like that to happen to their work? I think not. I haven't mentioned any of the Artists or their sitters here so that you can explore for youself this fasciniting but important piece of the development and chronicling of Art History. But as the title suggests, the Artists of the late Victorian Era who used models are given a new vista. 'The Artists Model' is an exciting book and provides invaluable historical insights into the experience of modelling and and aspects of the models lives.

Book Description
This survey of the theory and practice of gambling uses examples from an international range of sports betting markets. Gambling markets offer economists a fascinating case study of how information efficiency operates in a market. Insights gained from gambling interest many: governments (who tax gamblers), financial market analysts (who gamble on the financial markets), and, lastly, mathematicians (who analyze the puzzle of gambling).
Download Description
The degree to which markets incorporate information is one of the most important questions facing economists today. This book provides a fascinating study of the existence and extent of information efficiency in financial markets, with a special focus on betting markets. Betting markets are selected for study because they incorporate features highly appropriate to a study of information efficiency, in particular the fact that each bet has a well-defined end point at which its value becomes certain. Using international examples, this is the first book to review and analyse the issue of information efficiency in both financial and betting markets. Part I is an extensive survey of the existing literature, while Part II presents a range of new readings by leading academics. Insights gained from the book will interest students of financial economics, financial market analysts, mathematicians and statisticians, and all those with a special interest in finance or gambling.

Book Description
The Tempest has long dazzled readers and audiences with its intricate blend of magic, music, humour, intrigue and tenderness, its vibrant but ambiguous central characters. As Virginia and Alden Vaughan show, in their wide-ranging new edition of this established favourite, such antithetical extremes exemplify the play's endlessly arguable nature, its appeal to diverse eras and cultures. The Vaughans situate The Tempest at the centre of changing cultural attitudes towards colonialism, power politics and patriarchal hierarchies, and demonstrate how the play both shaped and reflected those changing attitudes. Informed by the concerns of a post-colonial international community, their edition emphasizes the play's world-wide cultural appropriation, and includes an extensive discussion of the play's after-life as well as an appendix of selected appropriations. The interdisciplinary editorial approach contributes a distinctively blended cultural and historical focus. `The Vaughans have provided a valuable new edition of the play, one whose expanded contextualisation, especially, will contribute to The Tempest's lively and varied afterlife both within and beyond the classroom.' Barbara Fuchs, University of Washington, Seattle, Shakespeare Quarterly

This joyous play, the last comedy of Shakespeare's career, sums up his stagecraft with a display of seemingly effortless skill. Prospero, exiled Duke of Milan, living on an enchanted island, has the opportunity to punish and forgive his enemies when he raises a tempest that drives them ashore--as well as to forestall a rebellion, to arrange the meeting of his daughter, Miranda, with an eminently suitable young prince, and, more important, to relinquish his magic powers in recognition of his advancing age. Richly filled with music and magic, romance and comedy, the play's theme of love and reconciliation offers a splendid feast for the senses and the heart.

Excellent activity based edition.......2007-02-02
The Tempest is rightly regarded as being one of the Bard's greatest works, containing some of his deepest thoughts on the nature of power and the relationship between rational man as controller of nature, and the animal man always to be at the mercy of the passions both of himself, others, and the world around him. In fact, this play could be thought of as representing Shakespeare's final and definitive statement on topics that he had explored throughout his cannon. But profound as the philosophy is, and despite the beauty of the poetry and the many magical elements contained within the play, the fact is that as far as the average attention lacking teenager is concerned, not a lot happens. This is why this Cambridge schools edition scores over most others. It is almost entirely activity focused, the expressed aim being to 'bring the play to life'. With at least one suggested activity beside each page of Shakespeare's text (as well as a decent amount of background notes and interpretation), every teacher armed with this book should be able to enthuse his charges with the very real relevance of this play to the world which we have bequeathed them.
Wonderful play, but no line numbers in Dover Thrift Edition........2007-02-02
Of course Shakespeare's TEMPEST is an enchanting--and enchanted--play, but my comments here concern the DOVER THRIFT EDITION of the play. Dover is to be commended for making texts such as these affordable for readers on a budget. However, students and teachers alike should note that the Dover edition does not supply line numbers. Students who are considering this text for a class and may have to write about it will not be able to cite specific line numbers as is convention (Act.scene.lines; e.g., 3.1.34-47). Professors and teachers should also be aware of this limitation and weigh it against the affordability of this text.
helpful.......2007-01-15
I have my degree in English... I like reading and teaching with this version as "help" not as a substitution. It gives a clearer understanding to Shakespeare for people who have difficulty with it.
Excellent edition for students........2006-11-09
I bought this copy admittedly because the magical artwork on the cover drew me towards this edition. I admit that it is shallow but I am very glad I ended up picking this one because it contains a wealth of information that is so perfect for helping students understand the context, background, themes and ideas contained within this beautifully written play.
Shakespeare is always difficult for us young people, but I can easily promise anyone that this edition does a fine job of explaining the play and it definately helps the reader to gain a better understanding of the play so you are prepared to go into an exam and write about it for two hours with the conviction that you will yield good results.
The storms that lead us to "ourselves.".......2006-08-20
I recently re-read THE TEMPEST prior to attending The Colorado Shakespeare Festival's performance of this play under the summer stars here in Boulder. Shakespeare (1552-1616) produced this emotionally-moving, poetic romance at the end of his career, in 1611, and published it in the First Folio in 1623. In fact, it was his last play.
It tells the story of Prospero, the exiled duke of Milan, and his beautiful daughter, Miranda, who have been stranded for twelve years on a desert island with two servants, the airy sprite Ariel (who Prospero rescued from being imprisonment in a tree) and the savage Caliban. Upon learning that his usurping brother Antonio is sailing near the island with the Neopolitan King Alonso's party, he uses his magic powers to conjure a sea storm that not only leaves the ship and its passengers wrecked on the island, but which also sparks a courtship between his daughter and the king's son, Ferdinand. The survivors of the wreck are separated into several groups, believing one another dead. Three subplots then alternate through the play. In one, Caliban befriends two drunken crew members, whom he believes to have come from the moon, and drunkenly attempts to raise is own rebellion against Prospero. In another, Prospero works to establish the romantic relationship between Ferdinand and Miranda. In the third subplot, Ariel thwarts a murder plot at Prospero's command.
The shipwrecked passengers are eventually reunited by island spirits to discover the marriage of Miranda and Ferdinand. In the end, as its title suggests, THE TEMPEST is as much about the opening scene's violent storm, as the journey that brought Prospero to the island and the psychological storm--"the sea change"--leading him to quit his magic and his remote island to return to Milan.

Buckley’s provocative observations on the use and abuse of English, gathered for the first time in a single volume - a “veritable cornucopia of language and logic that belongs in every library” (Library Journal). Edited by Samuel S. Vaughan.
Customer Reviews:
The Right Word.......2005-08-15
We need more brain stimulators like this book. I understand they rarely make the bestseller lists.
Buckley's nonpolitical jottings..........2004-08-02
This book includes many examples of Buckley's writing. It is most definitely not `The complete book of the uses and abuses of the English language...' as claimed on the front cover. It leans heavily towards Buckley's correspondence, reviews, interviews, and even eulogies. The lexicon consists of a series of lists of words used by WFB. It would have made more sense to provide a single alphabetized list instead of this `informal compendium'. To be fair to WFB, the book was not compiled by him. Read in small doses to avoid pomposity overload.
Buckley: The Right Word.......2002-06-09
Buckley: The Right Word by or rather selected, assembled and edited by Samuel S. Vaughan drawn from the works of William F. Buckley, Jr. is a book quite unique in its own right.
It is composed of letters and excerpts of interviews, reviews, columns, and appreciations. As the title suggests, it is a book about words as seen by Buckley and especially on the right word. Buckley is noted for his provocative and rather expansive vocabulary and this book is no disappointment. Also, grammer is well represented. I found this book to interestingly entertaining with a modicum of dry humor and wit.
If you like to be entertained by the right word or phrase, this is the book for you. I especially liked the correspondence.
Even the title.......2000-08-29
When I first became an avid reader of Mr. Buckley's work I was amazed at how often his use of words was attacked. I wondered whether a new crime bill had been passed that outlawed a person being articulate. Why should someone who joyfully uses language be pilloried for doing so? Even commercial reviewers feel the need to go to their thesaurus, trot out words that they have never used before and look foolish. They become guilty of the offense of affectation that so often is the charge against Mr. Buckley.
This collection of writing, and with it the discussion of language is many things, at no point is it not worthy of the reader's time. For all on Amazon who write their thoughts about a book, there is a section on reviewing that is priceless. The correspondence that is shared between his readers and Mr. Buckley set the standard for wit.
What is the alternative his detractors seek? Perhaps one of those books "English For Dummies?" I suppose a minimal number of words, subsidized with hand signals and grunts would please some. I choose to adhere to Mr. Buckley's love of language, even though when he is the writer I am often reduced to flipping through a dictionary. So what! The decriminalization of learning was passed long ago. Freedom of speech includes the right to expand your vocabulary in the pursuit of your happiness. To the extent others are bothered, again, so what? Apathy may have become a national pastime, but it is not required.
This book was carefully titled. I don't mean to shock his detractors but Mr. Buckley is a Conservative, so "right" was the only alternative for the title. Correct, appropriate, acceptable, could never do for this master of language. He uses a word because it works, because his choice enhances the reading and listening experience.
Grab a dictionary, expand your lexicon, the pain is minimal.
The Official Guide to Using Language with Precision.......2000-08-01
This book by William F. Buckley is a greatly entertaining piece to those who enjoy the trivial points of the English Language. It explores all areas of the language, such as diction, speaking style and the most common abuses of our language. My favorite part of the book is Buckley's series of letters from some of his readers. These letters provide insight to the personality of Buckley and also show his unforgiving grasp of the English language.

Book Description
In addition to his great prowess as a composer, Vaughan Williams was a man of strong character and unflagging energy, who lived a long, full life. He was at the centre of musical events in England for sixty years, a period which for sustained musical achievement is probably unequalled in the history of this country. Ursula Vaughan Williams's intimate and detailed biography of her husband used much material not hitherto available to scholars to produce a balanced and judicious portrait. It is now made newly available as a Clarendon Paperback.
Customer Reviews:
Splendid biography!.......2005-05-14
Written by his wife, Ursula, this is as authoratative as it gets. Filled with details, annecdotes, facts, histories and stories with a warmth that invites us to know and understand RVW as a person and as a composer.
I came to this book after reading many books about Gustav Holst. In doing so, I quickly learned of his friendship with RVW. The two were great friends. In this book, you get another perspective on that friendship and friendship with others. RVW was a kind, open, down-to-earth individual.
This is a remarakable biography about a remarkable human being. I'm glad he lived and wrote the music he shared with us all. This book helped me to understand the man and his times and his music. Highly recommended!
