Coraline lives with her preoccupied parents in part of a huge old house--a house so huge that other people live in it, too... round, old former actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible and their aging Highland terriers ("We trod the boards, luvvy") and the mustachioed old man under the roof ("'The reason you cannot see the mouse circus,' said the man upstairs, 'is that the mice are not yet ready and rehearsed.'") Coraline contents herself for weeks with exploring the vast garden and grounds. But with a little rain she becomes bored--so bored that she begins to count everything blue (153), the windows (21), and the doors (14). And it is the 14th door that--sometimes blocked with a wall of bricks--opens up for Coraline into an entirely alternate universe. Now, if you're thinking fondly of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, you're on the wrong track. Neil Gaiman's Coraline is far darker, far stranger, playing on our deepest fears. And, like Roald Dahl's work, it is delicious.
What's on the other side of the door? A distorted-mirror world, containing presumably everything Coraline has ever dreamed of... people who pronounce her name correctly (not "Caroline"), delicious meals (not like her father's overblown "recipes"), an unusually pink and green bedroom (not like her dull one), and plenty of horrible (very un-boring) marvels, like a man made out of live rats. The creepiest part, however, is her mirrored parents, her "other mother" and her "other father"--people who look just like her own parents, but with big, shiny, black button eyes, paper-white skin... and a keen desire to keep her on their side of the door. To make creepy creepier, Coraline has been illustrated masterfully in scritchy, terrifying ink drawings by British mixed-media artist and Sandman cover illustrator Dave McKean. This delightful, funny, haunting, scary as heck, fairy-tale novel is about as fine as they come. Highly recommended. (Ages 11 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
In Coraline's family's new flat there's a locked door. On the other side is a brick wall—until Coraline unlocks the door . . . and finds a passage to another flat in another house just like her own.
Only different.
The food is better there. Books have pictures that writhe and crawl and shimmer. And there's another mother and father there who want Coraline to be their little girl. They want to change her and keep her with them. . . . Forever.
Coraline is an extraordinary fairy tale/nightmare from the uniquely skewed imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman.
Download Description
Contains half a dozen e-book extras, not available in the standard print edition, including facsimile pages of Neil Gaiman's Coraline notebook and additional illustrations by Dave McKean. Terry Pratchett: "Coraline has the delicate horror of the finest fairy tales, and it is a masterpiece." The day after they moved in, Coraline went exploring... In Coraline's family's new flat are twenty-one windows and fourteen doors. Thirteen of the doors open and close. The fourteenth is locked, and on the other side is only a brick wall, until the day Coraline unlocks the door to find a passage to another flat in another house just like her own. Only it's different. At first, things seem marvelous in the other flat. The food is better. The toy box is filled with wind-up angels that flutter around the bedroom, books whose pictures writhe and crawl and shimmer, little dinosaur skulls that chatter their teeth. But there's another mother, and another father, and they want Coraline to stay with them and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go. Other children are trapped there as well, lost souls behind the mirrors. Coraline is their only hope of rescue. She will have to fight with all her wits and all the tools she can find if she is to save the lost children, her ordinary life, and herself. Critically acclaimed and award-winning author Neil Gaiman will delight readers with his first novel for all ages.

I have read this book ten or more times........2007-10-18
This book is a huge love of mine both as a reader and writer. Even if you don't normally read YA fantasy give this one a try. Its just a fantastic, wacky, eerie tale. This is in my top ten children's stories.
Terrific Must Read!.......2007-09-02
Coraline is creepy, scary, and absolutely terrific! I haven't been able to find any other books in this genre that are as engaging and well-written.
Elegant and artfully creepy.......2007-08-25
If Coraline is a children's book, it's only because of the length at 26 years old I was completely drawn into the story and and coudn't put it down. the summer holiday's are getting boring for Coraline. she and her parents have recently moved to the country, to one of the flats in an old renovated house. observing the neighbors and exploring everything in sight has been interesting, but it's getting old, and Coraline's parents; who both work at home aren't doing much to entertain her. In fact she's quite annoyed with them. Coraline craves adventure, and by stepping through a mysterious door in her apartment, she's about to discover that some adventures a better left alone.
Despite the scare factor or maybe due to it, this book has some powerful positive messages, and the scary bits are so well crafted that their full impact didn't hit me right a way. Who new black button eyes could be so cringe worthy. My over all impression of Caraline is that it play's out like a very Tim Burtonesque silent movie, I highly recomend the Coraline experience.
Caroline goes to the movies. Oct. '08
The Scariest Kids Book Ever!.......2007-08-18
This book was really creepy! I am an adult and I was scared. It is a great first horror book for your kids too, but don't be surprised if they want to sleep in bed with you for a couple of nights. Don't let this through you though. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Neil Gaiman is the greatest storyteller of our time, both for adults and children.
Hard to administer a grade for a child's book read by an adult, but..........2007-08-08
A children's book (12 and up), I read this primarily for its intriguing synopsis and its "easy factor". Even though I'd heard it was disturbing and much more mature than a kid's book, I wasn't quite expecting some of the elements that Gaiman introduced to his audience. For instance, a woman that sews buttons onto children's eyes, and who also gets rid of her husbands when she gets tired of them. I loved some of the themes the author approached, such as disposability, materialism, and the fallacies of love and obsession. Unfortunately, the themes were VERY lightly touched upon, and there were a lot of scenes that I wish had been expanded and described in more detail. There was too much repetition of ideas and words, but the originality of Gaiman's characters was spellbinding - most definitely a modern, if scary, fairy tale. But then again, most of the original fairy tales were disquieting in nature. (The sketch drawings interspersed within the text only adds to the intensity of the book). For kids, this is a beautiful story. For adults, however, it seems to be lacking.

magic time.......2007-09-23
Neil Gaiman, the author of the novel Stardust (which was made into a great film with Robert De Niro and Claire Danes) and the Sandman stories /graphic novels from DC Comics, is a natural storyteller. He is also a noted children author with a special talent to talk to children and adults with the sense of wonder of a child. He also has a children's audio collection of his picture books.
Now to this current audio collection, these are sort of stories you would hear when you were ten and around a summer campfire. The narrative talent of Gaiman draws the listener in and keeps you in. You don't care if these tales are for children, young adults or adults, he makes all these PG type stories great.
What makes this collection great is good storytelling. Like Ray Bradbury's S is for Space, which he notes in his audio forward, Gaiman uses simple ideas and meshes them into mini horror or thriller tales . . . and keeps you interested!
It is worth your time to get this collection for your family. When you do, get one for the adults and one for the kids
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-08-20
M IS FOR MAGIC is a collection of eleven short stories. This book was geared for elementary/middle school but I thought that I couldn't read many of the stories aloud in my classroom because some of the themes are pretty adult.
I liked many of the stories, especially THE WITCH'S HEADSTONE. This was a story about a real boy who was living in a graveyard and being raised by ghosts. He decides to do a very kind thing for a ghost who didn't get a gravestone and the story follows the adventure that goes with that decision.
I also enjoyed THE CASE OF FOUR AND TWENTY BLACKBIRDS. It was a detective story set with nursery rhyme characters. The detective needs to solve the mystery of who killed Humpty Dumpty. It is told with attitude and is very funny.
There are also stories that are scary or just plain creepy. The story about the jack-in-the-box just gave me chills. So if you want to read some good, strange stories that only take about an hour to read, check this book out.

A Hard-to-Put-Down Treasure Box.......2007-08-15
Neil Gaiman is an artist of prose and poetry. In his capable hands, ordinary things become new worlds of magic and mystery:
* Favorite nursery-rhyme friends become suspects in a film-noir detective's murder case.
* Mystical artifacts turn up on the bargain racks in the local charity donation shops.
* Seemingly normal parties are mere covers for intergalactic research and experimentation.
Readers can almost always expect the unexpected from Gaiman, and "M is for Magic" is no different. The short story format allows readers to squeeze a little bit of fantasy into their ordinary lives, while the finely crafted plots and characters leave one eagerly anticipating the next little journey, making it a hard-to-put-down treasure box.
In contrast to some of Gaiman's more "adult" works, this collection of short stories was compiled to appeal to a younger audience. All of these stories were originally published in other collections or periodicals, but are still a delight to read over and over again. I would definitely recommend this book as an addition to any fantasy lover's bookshelf--young and old alike.

A Wonderful Title, Even With Recycled Material.......2007-08-08
What a lot of people seem to miss when complaining about this book is that it was assembled for younger readers. This book was made in the style of Ray Bradbury's R Is For Rocket. It's primary function is to introduce younger readers to Gaiman's work. All the stories here I would feel comfortable with my children reading, while most of the titles from Fragile Things, I might hesitate. This book does contain some repeat stories, some hard-to-find material, and some new stories, as well. Read this book to get a sneak peek at Neil's new book, The Graveyard Book. All in all, a wonderful book, and I'm thankful for it.
A good choice for young and old alike.......2007-08-01
Now while this book may indeed be a collection of stories that many Neil Gaiman fans have read before there are a couple of new and wonderful nuggets worth delving into. The Witch's Headstone amongst them.
From lighthearted to dark. From simple to thought provoking, Gaiman has yet again provided a world of magic and mystery into which you quickly become immersed.
No tale collected here is condescending or haughty. Nor are any too simple or childish. They are just good stories, that will appeal to any and all audiences.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone. Whether you are new or old to Neil Gaiman, it's worth it.

Great for teens!.......2006-02-26
I would recommend this book to any young teenager. I've read the "adult" version, and it would be appropriate for older teens at a high reading level. I've also read this youth version, and I thought it very appropriate for kids grades 6-9, especially. The cover art is pretty juvenile, but I just had a 9th grader (age 14) borrow my copy of this book, and she loved it.
Not the best.......2004-06-15
The book was ok...it was not life changing...I think it would be great for new Christians or for young teens (12-15 years old.) I think this book was written for young teens because the way it is written makes me feel like I am reading a children's picture book. It is very repetitive and uses too many little stories to make a point. I would recommed reading Victory over the Darkness by Neil T. Anderson instead if you are older or are an advanced reader.
LIFE CHANGING.......2002-06-27
I am only half way through "Stomping Out The Darkness" and I already am compelled to tell others about this book. If you are at all interested in buying this amazing book, do it. You will not regret it. You might never realize the amazing gift you have been given when Jesus died on the cross for your sins. I have no words to describe this book except a miracle. Dave Park and Neil are amazing men. If you are not at peace in your life, you can change it. This book shows you how. God Bless You
Freedom.......2000-05-17
Stomping out the darkness is one of the most influential booksI have ever read. It not only teaches you the basics on your identityin Christ, which so many Christians miss out on, but it also shows you pratical applications for them. Please, if you buy any book this year, BUY THIS ONE. It will change your perspective and your life.

Even Worse than Victory Over the Darkness.......2007-08-17
Neil Anderson is the author of several books related to spiritual warfare, Victory Over the Darkness and Bondage Breaker being the foundational works. Te continuing presence of his works on Christian Bookstore shelves is any indicator, Anderson's popularity has not waned significantly since 1990 when VOD was published. There is much to commend Anderson's writings, but underlying these are several flawed principles.
Anderson generally avoids the most sensationalistic attributes of the deliverance movement by stressing truth over power encounters: He recognizes that Satan's power is (mostly) in deception. He puts emphasis on personal responsibility for sin. He focuses on Christ's work in the believer's life as our source of strength. He attempts to derive his theology from the teaching epistles rather than historical gospel stories. He also stresses the importance of forgiveness in a believer's life. There is also a lot of good theology and practical wisdom throughout.
It is precisely all these good points that make it so difficult to notice the occasional error. When all of those errors add up, they lead to big problems. As one author has stated, it is like steak laced with arsenic. It tastes the same, looks the same, smells the same - and it's mostly steak. But that little bit of poison is enough. There are several problematic teachings that under gird Anderson's teachings such as: A faulty view of human nature regarding the flesh, the "old man," the "new man," and the spirit. Acceptance of pop psychology's view of self-identity. An unhealthy emphasis on demonic activity. Confusion of spiritual warfare and demonic possession. The belief that Christians can be demonized (essentially synonymous with possession). Acceptance of a widespread satanic network, territorial spirits, sex demons, generational curses, etc. Ritualistic methods of avoiding spiritual problems. A misrepresentation of Scriptural passages to support these teachings.
The biggest problem with these errors is that they not only lead to false conclusions, but tend to counteract the good teachings of Anderson as well. This sometimes has the appearance of "balance" but only when one ignores the obvious implications of Anderson's total teaching. For example, Anderson's emphasis on personal responsibility is abdicated by his insistence that Christians can reach a point where they lose control over their actions to demons that take over their lives because of past sins.
Anderson's problematic view on human nature, faulty view of sanctification, unhealthy focus on the demonic in the life of a believer, his view on what constitutes occult involvement, his uncritical acceptance of urban legends and subjective experiences to validate his claims, his poor handling of the Scriptural text in several areas, his misunderstanding of the authority of both Satan and man, his fusing of two different concepts regarding demonic influence, and the other problems listed here lead this author to the conclusion that Anderson's writings, while full of truth, contain enough error that they should not be trusted for good theology.
Keep the baby when you're throwing out the water.......2007-07-27
A great deal of what Dr. Anderson talks about I actually have first hand experience in. So the problems he's trying to solve in this book are very real and very relevant to many many people who will not be understood by a vast majority of people today.
I do feel though that he's building a ministry around extra-biblical teachings, and that's shaky at best and potentially harmful.
Here's an example of one of his assertions: You cannot communicate with demons through your thoughts; you have to speak out loud for demons to hear you.
Well, that's an interesting assertion, and maybe it's true. But I've found lots of evidences to the contrary. He seems so convinced that it's true that part of his truth encounter procedures are based on that assertion. Again, the Bible doesn't say one way or another, but I found this to be slightly troubling. Somebody at his ministry did send me some literature on the reasons why it was thought that people cannot communicate with spirits through just thoughts, and while I still don't agree, I don't think this is a deal breaker, as in I won't denounce his ministry simply on the basis of some controversial topics that could go either way. My real concern is that he may end up doing more of the same with things that the Bible does not teach although here I don't have any specific evidence to say he's doing such a thing. For all I know, he may not be.
However, I will say that I very much appreciated his book and his ministry as I was going through my problems with harmful spiritual forces. His assertion that these spiritual encounters are truth encounters rather than power struggles really hit it on the nail for me. That part is very Biblical, although trying it in real life may not always get you the results you expect because the Bible does not tell us all there is to know about demonic encounters. For instance, if you're having a debate with a friend, you can't always expect that spouting a particular fact will have its intended result, that is, to force your friend to say, "touche." The truth is important, but so is the context. In my experience, telling a demon to go away in the name of Jesus is a mixed bag. I don't even know whether that's our duty to do all the time. Even Paul used that authority sparingly.
All I know concerning how one should "be" around these spirits is to first submit to God, come to him for help. And then resist these spirits, not trying to hold down a conversation with them. There's no need to shout, yell, make a show of power. Dr. Anderson is right about that. The authority to command another free-willed entity stems from your identity and your standing (your authority to say such things). I suppose in this context, resisting is really to do what God wants me to do, and if I know what the devil is trying to do, do the exact opposite of what he wants me to do. But this is more tricky than saying a few lines. It's more in knowing who you are and what rights you have to think and act the way you want to because of the freedom given to you by God.
So with this book, you'll really need to scrutinize a lot of his assertions because they may just be plain wrong from a factual sense. But I thank him because his insight helped me get through a very tough time in my life, and the concept of demonic encounters as truth encounters where knowing the truth and living it was the remedy was a lifesaver, at least in my particular case.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, but be like the Bereans in the book of Acts chapter 17, and really scrutinize what's being said in light of scripture, but also realize that there are ways to interpret his assertions to make his points seem ridiculous and there is a way to interpret what he's saying so that you get a sense of what he's really trying to say.
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32.......2007-02-09
Good, Biblical teaching in this book. I also recommend Joyce Meyer "Battlefield of the Mind" as well. For any Christian struggling with freedom from strongholds (psychology lingo is self-defeating thoughts) both books are excellent. The best teaching I found on this subject is Kenneth E. Hagin Sr. "The Believer's Authority". I listened to a CD version. The first two books are good teaching on 2 Corinthians 10:4-6. The Hagin teachings reveal that Christians are already free Luke 10:19, Colossians 1:13. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed. I thank the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 10:4-6
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.
Luke 10:19-20
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Colossians 1:13
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love
The Bondage Breaker-Dr Neil T Anderson.......2007-02-08
Couldnt put it down the first time I read it. Helps Christians to understand their conflicts and helps them resolve them. I believe a must for every person who is a Christian.
Scary book.......2007-01-19
I have been through a year and a half of pastoral counseling for a mental disorder as well as secular psychotherapy. I thought buying this book would give me a spiritual perspective on how to deal with my mental disorder but instead it scared me. Anderson talks about people with mental disorders as possessed by demons. In his chapter on how to treat your disorder he has the reader recite prayers that deal with evil spirits and demonic possessions. He also believes that relaxation practices such as yoga are evil. I am a very spiritual person and get my strength from God, but not in this way. I do not believe that I am possessed by demons or under the influence of demons and I certainly do not want to think of my mental disorder as being that way. This is a book I would never want to read again, and wished I had never purchased.

For the new cheerleader and coach.......2004-12-31
This one was written before most current cheerleaders were born, and the pyramid section is woefully out of date with its 3 &1/2 highs, but the key ingredients on cheering how-to are all still relevant, both physically and spirit-wise. It is still, in my estimation, the best book for a beginning cheerleader to have because it has:
*Stretches which are still helpful.
*A tremendous variety of jump examples, more-so than any other book I have seen, including the C/window, & stag. Also starts with the tuck as the most basic jump rather than the toe touch. Unfortunately, it doesn't really show you the approach and landing techinques.
*More variations of arm and hand positions than any other book I've seen.
*Great pictures of what not to do when hitting motions. (Broken wrists, fly-away arms, uneven shoulders)
*Simple, basic partner stunts best suited for beginner cheerleaders who need to learn the step-lock method (at a supervised practice, of course.) Pony mount, Knee/Standing tabletop, Side sit, 'Bama sit, single based thigh stand variations, victory mount, star, flying angel, and stag catch. Their tallest stunt is a shoulder stand. No prep level or higher stunts are taught in this book, but there are pictures of some taller pyramids, a few of which are still legal.
*Good sample dance 8 counts, though a bit out of date for the Hip-hop age. But perfect if you have a marching band.
*Small section on basic tumbling, but smartly suggests that cheerleaders seek out qualified instructors to learn from.
*Several pages of cheers and chants: basic spirit, football, basketball, and wrestling
My advice? Beginning cheerleaders need this book. Intermediate and advanced cheerleaders might find it useful only if they want to consider finding ways to update some old school moves and look a little different from everyone else who attended summer camp with them.
My idea of an excellent cheering how-to library consists of this book, plus "The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading" and "Coaching Cheerleading Successfully".

Best Book on Cheerleading!!.......2003-02-10
What a great book! I'm a cheerleader and a gymnast, and I've found it to be a fantastic resource! This book is perfect for all levels of cheerleading, whether you're a Pop Warner cheerleader or a Varsity cheerleader. It has tons of hints, tips, and instructions. There are thousands of photos. In here, there are jumps, cheers, chants, gymnastics, routines, stunts, pyramids, tryout tips, and sooo much more! This book has helped me become a much better cheerleader and I've appreciated everything I learned from it. This book deserves three cheers!!
Not for today's cheerleader.......2002-07-24
This book, while helpful in some ways, is not ideal for today's more active and athletic Varsity or All-Star cheerleader. I would definitely reccommend this book for less competitive squads, like Pop Warner or J.V. Beginning cheerleaders and new coaches may find this book useful. But personally, with five years experience, I didn't learn too much from it. Instructional videos or competitions on ESPN will benefit competitive cheerleaders more. The tumbling section has detailed pictures of performing a back handspring, and some of the spirit/fundraising ideas are good. The stunting pictures are very outdated, and could use some updating. There are very few free-standing stunts, basically everything is old-fashioned pyramids. The basic stunts they show are pretty innovative, and would be good for Pop Warner cheerleaders. If they revamped this portion of the book, I would give it a higher rating. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY CHEERLEADING!
Great Book!! I loved it alot!!.......2001-03-14
This book shows you step-by-step ways to perform incredible stunts such as pyramids. Being a Varsity Cheerleader this was a great book for reference. It was very helpful. Thanks to this book we put on a good performence and really pepped up our players and had a year full of tons of victorys! Read it! It's incredible!!
Good for novice coaches.......2000-08-08
I coach Pop Warner (little league) cheerleaders. This is the best book I've found for cheer ideas, fundamentals, and stunt safety. The pictures are outdated, but the basics are all intact and correct. Highly recommended for new coaches.

Best Neil Young guitar compilation period.......2006-05-13
As of now, this is the best place to start...still not all popular songs are included...but still the best to date
Songs are here in there entirety...if you want easy guitar stuff go elsewhere, this is to the actual recordings...
Some Crazy Horse songs are ment for two guitar players not one...but either way rhythem or lead is still great to use...
Acoustic songs are 100% correct...so are the eletric can't stress it enough...
Best place for any guitarest into Neil Young to start...also, the unplugged tab book is great as well...
5 starts....
DIfficult to follow.......2005-06-24
I found the tab in this book very hard to follow. I am a beginner guitar player, and Neil Young is always a good place to learn. However, the tab seems filled with unnecessary info that the make the bass notes hard to follow. Even simple songs that I knew like, "The Needle and The Damage Done", were brutal to follow. If you want an ABSOLUTE tab layout of the songs, with EVERY single minute noise, then get the book. Poor indeed, as far as I'm concerned.

Excellent book.......2005-04-27
This is a great anthology of Neil Young's early years, including stuff from Buffalo Springfield and some obscure but tuneful songs from that band. I found the chords to be right on target for one of my favorites, Flying on the Ground, a beautiful song with unusual chord voicings that would not be apparent to the average guitar player. The chord charts for that song alone make this book worth the price.
