Customer Reviews:
Great Book - Great stories........2007-05-22
The only negative is the size of the book. There should be a smaller hardcover or paperback edition. The content is superb and a great coffee table book, but it's difficult to curl up with this book in bed.
An amazing book.......2007-05-13
I really liked Anthology. Not because it told the basic story, which I already got from other biographies. What makes this book really valuable is that it gives the view from inside the eye of the hurricane.
I mean, what's it like when the world starts screaming in your face?
Telling moments... There's a snapshot of John and Paul clutching their guitars as they head onstage for a concert, but their eyes are grim and tired. Paul is holding up his guitar like he needs a shield to ward off a punch to the face. It's a rather frightening photograph, and you feel sorry for them.
Or you wonder, what was George Harrison thinking, when he set off on a stroll through Height-Ashbury - that no one would notice him?
Or you sense, how much fun they seem to have had touring Australia.
Or their "family photos" from vacation trips... about as boring as anyone's photos. Except it's them. THEM.
The book seamlessly works fresh material from the three Beatles (and a few others) with parts of old John Lennon interviews, so it all reads smoothly, like it was all done at once - really great. The book is a fascinating trip all over again... I read it for two days through and hardly put it down.
Only Book You Need.......2007-05-11
As a hard core Beatles fan I can recommend many books, but if I had to recommend only one it would probably be this one. This is a complete, definitive biography, told in their own words. Not surprising that they should feel the need to do this. With all the tabloid fiction out there, I'm surprised they didn't do this earlier. I'm also not surprised that some people are calling it incomplete, saying that this seems to be their version of the story that they want put out. Could it be because this IS the actual true story about them? No really! Do they mean to imply that they ( the Beatles) actually know more about this subject (the Beatles) then some idiot who met them twice, or (maybe not at all) and decided to make some money by writing a second rate book? The audacity! This book tells the story from birth to break up. There is no filler, just facts. And it is told in their own funny, matter of fact,no nonsense way.
Of course the music is the spotlight. Each album is gone over with a fine tooth comb and you are lifted right into the atmosphere, and events unfolding behind the scenes that made each album special. Actually everything they talk about, from their childhoods to Beatlemania seems to lift you right into the scene. This is helped by the gorgeous pictures, almost all of them from their personal collections. Even if you are illiterate you will want this book just for the pictures. By the way, John's quarter of the story is told through interviews. Thank goodness he gave so many. Some of the pictures even have his written comments scrawled on them, showing us exactly how he felt at the time. There are hundreds of pictures of documents, handwritten play lists, handwritten lyrics, notes, hotel and restaurant bills, lists of concerts (again with John's handwritten comments about what was going on.) These guys kept everything! I can't beleive that Paul and Ringo actually kept plane and hotel receipts from a long ago trip to Greece with Jane Asher and Maureen Cox.(at that time, the future Mrs. Starkey) There is even a document at the top corner of one of the pages, (I bet a lot of people missed it) which refers to the request for some lice removal medicine to be delivered to one unfortunate Beatle's home. Of course they are NOT talking about head lice, and having read Peter Brown's pointless, vindictive book,The Love You Make,I know that this may have been Paul's way of saying,'Yes it's true but Epstein's creepy, lackey had no right to put it in a book (and make lots of money). Or maybe I read it in that other rag, Yesterday by Chet Flippo. I had the misfortune of reading both books. Don't make the same mistake.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind reading juicy, personal stuff as long as it's true and not embellishment. And there are plenty of interesting, sexy, stories, and stories of John's craziness but coming from their mouths, I know they are true. Except for that peeing on nuns story. Really John! George says it never happened and I beleive him. This book is like a huge memoir. A personal scrapbook and photo album. You will enjoy it's beauty, candidness, and it's entertaining style. And it's not true that most of these stories have been told before. I've read hundreds of books on the Fabs and 90% of this book is fresh, especially the early years. While you're at it, get the Anthology DVD set also. It's completely different from this book! Talk about quality, and value for money! Something that's always been important to the Beatles.
Everything Beatles! By the Beatles! What could be wrong?.......2007-05-09
Take 4 guys from England that changed the world of music forever and have them tell the story of their meteoric rise to fame and dominance of the music industry for decades and what do you have? THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY.
John, Paul, George and Ringo made the music that we listen to today what it is. Without the British Invasion, we would never have had the development of rock and roll as it is today. Elvis and the Beatles, they are the fathers of rock and roll. This is half of that story.
The Anthology is a great compilation of photos, album covers, artwork, lyrics, personal stories, articles and everything else Beatles. If you like the Beatles, then this is the source for every bit of information about the first super-group. You can probably find other books out there about the Beatles, but this was written by the fab four; you really can't go anywhere else to get the information you get in this book.
This is a must have for any Beatles fan. A must have for anyone that appreciates the history of music and rock & roll. Well, this is just a must have.
What more can I say? The Beatles were the original. Their story is great, their music is great, this book is great. Fact, period, end of story.

Exceptional reference guide to Apple Records.......2007-02-02
This is a reference guide to the products, mostly recordings, put out in the US and Canada by Apple Records, the Beatles' own record label. The Apple label began operations in 1968 that continue to this day. This well-illustrated book covers not just Beatles on Apple and solo Beatles on Apple; ALL artists released on Apple get equal and thorough coverage. (Even some unreleased, like Richard Brautigan and Delaney and Bonnie.)
If you are a collector of Apple Records materials, this is a must-have. If you are not a collector, it will be of lesser interest.
The "Special Interest" and "Apple Corps" sections in particular contain info that is hard to come by otherwise. The bonus CD contains material of interest to completists.
Compared to an earlier edition of AppleLog that I have, the images of the record labels are far superior in this new edition.
I have two main quibbles with this book:
1) not every label variation is well-covered
2) the estimated prices listed by the author differ from what I see in record stores and at on-line auctions. They are significantly inflated in this guide, both at the VG and NM levels, in my opinion.
If not for those issues, I would give it 5 stars.
If you read this book plus Bruce Spizer's books on Apple Records, you are well on the way to knowing much of what there is to be known about Apple Records products, advertisements, etc. I recommend all three books.
If you want to read a history of Apple Records, "Apple to the Core" and "The World's Longest Cocktail Party" are titles to look for.
Book Description
Whenever John, Paul, or George went on a trip, they would send Ringo a postcard. Now, for the first time, Ringo Starr is opening his private archive to share this delightful and very intimate correspondence. Whether it's John advising Ringo to record a "great & simple" song like Blondie's Heart of Glass, Paul and Jane Asher dropping a note from Rishikesh to report on their meditation lessons with the Maharishi, or George writing from the Great Barrier Reef to confirm plans for Christmas dinner, each postcard is a warm and personal snapshot of life in (and after) The Beatles. The 51 postcards -- many of which are covered in whimsical drawings -- are colorfully reproduced, both front and back. Ringo's droll commentary fills in the blanks, though he does confess that at times he had to consult the Internet for details! Often funny, occasionally bittersweet, and always revealing, Postcards from the Boys is a must for Beatles lovers.

postcards of history.......2007-09-15
this book is a plesent suprise each page contains an postcard sent to ringo by one or more of the beatles.along with each card comes a comentary on the card such as time, place, background.this is a whole different way to see the beatles back in the past.a history lesson if you will.
Postcards from the Boys.......2007-05-09
Wonderful book! Every Beatles fan should own this one. It's a gem.
Beatles.......2007-01-10
If you loved the Beatles and still do you will enjoy this book by Ringo. Easy to read and have in a your collection of memorabilia.
satisfying insights into informal relationships between the other beatles and ringo .......2006-07-17
This is a valuable piece of Beatle literature that provided me with some really nice new nuggets of information and understanding, and I feel grateful to Ringo for sharing not only the postcards, but his observations on them. Even the choice of pictures on the cards tells you things about the characters of George, John and Paul.
In all, a real contribution for Beatle nuts who hunger for a little more sense of what the guys are/were "really like."
At least the cover looked nice!.......2006-07-10
I wasn't that happy with the book. Seeing the personal post cards the Beatles sent to each other over the years seemed like a good concept. I guess it looked better on paper than reality. For one thing, there aren't many postcards. Two: They are just the average postcards anybody gets when someone travels, except more boring. Nothing more than "having fun, see you soon". That's about the whole lot of them. Each postcard has a one or two line Ringo quip about it. Sometimes they're interesting, mostly not. The only good thing about it is the fact that it was only $10.00 and some or all of the profits go to charity. Even a die hard Beatle fan won't find much to love about this book.
Book Description
Everyone knows that William Bonney, alias Billy the Kid, was killed by Pat Garrett around midnight on July 14, 1881 at Fort Sumner, NM. Or, was he?
Authors like William V. Morrison, W. C. Jameson, William A. Tunstill, Jannay P. Valdez, Robert E. Hefner, and Brett L. Hall wrote that Billy the Kid escaped death that night and died an old man by the name of Brushy Bill Roberts in Hico, Texas in 1950. In fact, Brushy Bill is still a tourist attraction and a celebrity in Hico. The Chamber Of Commerce of Hico runs a museum and displays a statue of Billy, and celebrate Billy the Kid Days every year. Well, someone was eventually going to find the truth about Brushy. Jim has uncovered undeniable proof that Brushy Bill was just another old man seeking fame.
On the other hand, author, Helen Airy, wrote about a man by the name of John Miller whose family claimed that he was Billy the Kid. Jim, again, found significant proof that John Miller was not Billy the Kid.
But, who was William Bonney, alias Billy the Kid? Most authors and historians agree that his real name was Henry McCarty. Jim does not necessarily agree and provides some evidence that might eventually lead to the identification of the real Billy the Kid.
Whether you believe neither Brushy Bill or John Miller were Billy the Kid or not, Jim's book is very interesting to read. Jim not only provides proof against Brushy and Miller, but he also provides new information on Billy the Kid, Henry McCarty, and William Bonney, as well as, Buckshot Roberts and Johnny Ringo.
You've heard all of the so-called 'evidence' against Brushy Bill and John Miller, and now, you can see the real hard evidence. Buy the book and learn facts that were never disclosed before now.
Customer Reviews:
A quick and interesting read.......2007-09-18
I have enjoyed reading this book, and the different perspective it offers as to the question of "who was Billy the Kid?". The only reason I could not give it a higher rating is that I did find in on occasion to be hard to follow at times. The main cause of this is that the author would some times drop off the last name of people involved at the start of a new section, making it hard to know at times which "Joe" or "John" they were reffering to. Other than that I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the legends of Billy the Kid.
Now I Can Better Judge Who Billy the Kid Really Was.......2006-12-31
This book is definitely for those who have long wondered about the claims of various people that they were indeed the true Billy the Kid. The
author has researched for years everything he could find about the characters in the book. He uses a nice format of plain print for theories
about each and, if available, their own words, then in bold type the only conclusion to reach from all of that. At times it reads almost like a novel, at other times gets very technical so you realize the author knows about which he is "speaking." At the back of the book are quite a few certificates of births and marriages, further revealing how well researched this book is.
Was there moe than one Billy the Kid?.......2006-11-28
I just finished reading "Billy the Kid - His Real Name Was" This a a fresh approach to the subject and is brief and to the point. The book is well written and easy to read. The author provides a lot of new information based on real research, rather than relying on what other writers assume to be the truth. The book suggests the possibilty that William H. Bonney and William McCarty may have been different people. This makes sense because there may have been many people nicknamed "Billy the Kid" in the old west. Take, for example, "Billy the Kid Claiborne" of Tombstone fame. It seemed popular in those days to name young cowboys "The Kid." The author encourages the reader to make his own decision as to who Billy the Kid really was and encourages further research.
Well Researched!.......2006-09-22
In just reading the book you can see that the author has pain-stakingly researched through many other biographies of 'The Kid's time, as well as more recent ones.
I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who is writing a report or paper on Billy the Kid, and for those who are curious about the man behind that notorious name.
A Must Read!.......2006-07-23
Billy the Kid fans don't miss this one! Well written, thoroughly researched and a very interesting read. Could very well be the "missing link" in the Billy the Kid legend.

Good Book, reads somewhat disjointed but Good.......2007-03-24
If you like Paul McCartney and/or Yoko Ono, don't read this book. It shows what true a*****es these two were - McCartney for his monumental, self-centered ego, and Yoko for being a tasteless, manaicaly-possessive weirdo masquerading as an "avante-guard" artist. She truly had no taste, and though she was John's soulmate, she was WEIRD! And McCartney destroyed the Beatles to further his own moderately talented career (For crying out loud - Wings recorded MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB!?!?!?!) Still, a good book,if you don't like the two above-mentioned persons.
Trash - keep this out of print.......1998-10-23
I read a copy of this from my local library and asked that they remove it. This "book" employs yellow journalism to the hilt and finds nothing good nor objective to say on every event on the Beatles. Sources are lacking and conversations fabricated. Truly horrible.
Customer Reviews:
ringo the great.......2007-07-06
I bought this hoping there would be some text/narration of Ringo's life, esp. before the Beatles. It is truly an encyclopedia and as such is more of a reference book than something to read.I suppose that the movie "That'll be the Day" in which Ringo essentially plays himself during the period of his life pre-Beatles working at a Butlin's-like holiday camp is the closest we can come to getting a glimpse into the "real" Ringo. Ringo was a greaser-rocker (Like the rest of the beatles) and the movie is almost a mini-bio (it's either "that'll be the day" or "stardust" in which Ringo appears;both available on AMazon or Ebay.)
There is a dearth of material on Ringo, which is really unfair as George Martin has observed on the Beatles Cirque du Soliel "Love" CD/show how Ringo's awesome drumming,(which Phil Collins has said is impossible for another drummer to reproduce eg. "the fills on "A Day in the Life");is the glue that kept the Beatles' sound consistent over the years.
Ringo is the foundation without which The Beatles would not've been as successful. Most pop music fans don't pay much attention to drumming and might not realize how unique and great Ringo was w/ the Beatles.
I hope someday that a good author/researcher comes along and puts out a biography worthy of Ringo Starr. It would be totally WRONG if that never happens, esp. while Ringo's still with us. The Ringo encyclopedia probably deserves 2 0r 3 starrs, but I gave it 4 out of respect for Ringo himself, also for the lack of material on Ringo and because only Charlie Watts can come close to Ringo in the sense of being so closely woven into the overall sound of their respective groups,(ok,maybe Ginger Baker, too.)(Watts and Starr are criminally underrated.)Like a good referee or umpire,a good drummer is doing his job well when nobody notices him.
Book Description
Replacing Pete Best on drums just as The Beatles were set to record Love Me Do, Ringo Starr became not only the luckiest man in pop music, but also the epitome of the rock and roll lifestyle: fame, fortune, glamorous women, plum film roles, and one-name recognition. After the group's 1970 breakup, only the genial, even-tempered Ringo remained on good terms with all of his feuding ex-mates. But behind the sunglasses and the quips lay another story: a hardscrabble childhood in Liverpool, frequent bouts of poor health, lack of education, and a long battle with alcoholism. Alan Clayson's biography traces Starr's entire life and career, from his early days with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes through the tumultuous Fab Four years and to his wildly successful stint as an actor and solo artist. This biography remains the definitive account of the man who anchored the Mersey Sound.

Looking for Derek Taylor.......2005-02-15
...
Hello, my name is Heather, I have become enamored of this man.
Derek Taylor, I mean; his work, his manner, his mantality
(Yes, the spelling is correct.)
And I've never met him before.
And I never will. *grin*
But that's not the point, is it? The point is
to enjoy people like this, wherever they
can be found---And you?
And I post this on Valentines' Day. *laugh* Which I do not
believe in. I don't think Derek Taylor did either. The idea of
only ONE day of love expressed...
is abhorent. *grin*
Here, we have, exhibit A: a guy who influenced the Beatles, hung
with them, helped with them, and I find nothing, when I come
looking for him.
Well, guess what? This book rocks. And the prose, and the people
Derek talked about--people, yes, so many people--and the
insights, are as swift and as bright and as deep as a new
thought, in the dark.
Who'd've thought I'd go looking, for the first time, in my life, for the Beatles, and find this guy.
Amazing. You should read him.
As he sure as hell read
all of YOU *grin*
Find this book. Get this man's work seen.
I thank you.
Meanwhile, read this piece, that I wrote, after searching for Derek. You may just like it.
+++
Billions and billions of Beatle pictures. You can't see the fawking ROAD for Beatles pictures. Every once in a while though I'd find Derek. Hiding on a page. Standing so close, so intent, so integral to the mood, you almost wondered why you hadn't seen him more often in all those BLOODY photos. Needless to say, he (and others like him) had been cropped from view. We're here to see the Beatleboys, not the Beatleaides, not the Beatlekeepers, not the Beatle people so essential to the smooth-running operation that most fans didn't even know who the hell they were.
Only that they often stood as a roadblock, a deterrent, a buffer to Beatle-baked people who clamoured for yet another BLOODY photo, yet another autograph, yet another insightful interview, yet another money-making endorsement, yet another banal or boring conversation with their Beatle boygods.
Meanwhile, people like Derek Taylor provided an attempt at clarity, a soothing song in the ever-widening gyre of madness that hurricaned about them; a smoke-festooned-and-Scotch-laced Alka Seltzer to the moptop FabFour sanity and sense of self.
It wasn't just Derek. Without Brian Epstein, Peter Brown, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall or even George Martin, I don't think the Beatles would have existed.
Oh, they'd be out there somewhere, playing in a dingy Cavernlike club. But I don't believe they would have reached the almost mythic proportions of pop/rock stardom they enjoyed (even to this day) without the incredibly devoted, rational and skilled people backing them up, holding their drunken heads or taking a punch for the Beatle benefit. Less insightful folks might feel otherwise, but if you look close, REAL close, you can see a pattern in the chain of command that surrounded these lovely lads from Liverpool.
And standing close by, cigarette barely dangling from his lips, his expression so dark, so unaffected was Derek. Derek's dark eyes always watching, watching. Exuding calm. (Whether he felt calm or not.) To be found in a photo. More than just a confidante; more than just a majordomo; more than just a father-figure to four cheeky chappies from a small seaport in the British Isles, Derek was their friend. He carried insights into each and every Beatle boy that shown through every press release he ever composed. He'd be on hand for all the cheer and all the paranoid doomsaying. Following George out a flashbulbed front door; standing protectively within shielding distance of any one Beatle that was about; striding through an airport walkway, like a military sergeant in a dark sharp-shouldered Savile row suit, offsetting Paul and John's white ones; leaning against an Apple-rotting rooftop wall, dressed in a caramel-coloured car coat, listening in a reverie to one last let-it-be concert from those Beatle boys he so adored; uncropped from a classic Beatle photo (There is a photo of Paul and his then girlfriend Jane Asher, returning from holiday in the Virgin Islands. I found a photo where Derek is walking along right beside Jane. Ha!)...there he is. Derek Taylor.
You should know this man. And be inspired by his words. As I am.
