3 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......2007-10-11

I am enormously fond of Fredrick Noad. His book was my introduction to the classical guitar pedagogy, and many of the lessons espoused in this tome are classical guitar categorical imperatives. The number of competent and successful classical guitarists in the world could easily be counted on the fingers on one hand, and this book is useful only in as much as the new guitarist seeks qualified instruction at the outset as well as this book's counsel.

This book is a good place to start for those who wish to have a taste of the classical guitar, but a sure path to failure and frustration for those who rely on this book exclusively for their instruction. This is the book's one failing: assuming that the manifold technical possibilities of a classical instrument can be gleaned, and mastered, from a book. When used in conjunction with a qualified instructor, the lessons are well laid-out, and the emphasis on reading notation at the outset is exemplary. Where the student will encounter difficulties, however, is with the selection of repertoire studies. The music ranges from the banal, to pieces, and tempo indications, far beyond the limited means of most struggling new guitarists. The book also suggests that advanced pieces like, El noi de la Mare by Llobet, are a fitting and successful conclusion to his introductory volume 1!

There is no such thing as a one trick pony, and in order to make great strides with the instrument, there is no bypassing the time-honored methods of endless scale practice, and endless etudes. The number of ten-thumbed noise polluters out there is legion, and the only purpose of playing an instrument is not to test the patience of those within earshot.

Used in conjunction with a qualified instructor, and in combination with a book of scales, this book should successfully see you through your introductory period with the guitar (six months to a year for most). In order to progress beyond the introductory level, you have to lay Noad's book aside, and pick up the Sor, Aguado, Guiliani, and Carcassi studies.

4 out of 5 stars Frustrating book but Very good material .......2007-09-19

I have been playing guitar since I was 14 but only recently I started a systematic study of classical guitar. Once I got the book I was surprised at how thorough it is. The exercises are very well built and the progression seems to be very natural. Actually the exercises sound like pieces of music. I was playing them once and a friend of mine thought I was actually playing a "piece." Speaking of pieces, they are very well selected, in my opinion. I study the notes and then I get to it. The CD helped me tremendously: once I get the piece down, I have the tendency of speeding up. I tried to play with the CD and I am getting better at keeping the tempo stable.

Two negative things though: The binding of the book is not good for this kind of books. The book doesn't stay open on the music stand. Also, the layout needs to improve. Both the exercises and the musical selections are often printed in a way that you have to turn the page. That in itself is annoying but considers also the fact that the book doesn't stay opened flat. The result? A lot of frustration !

5 out of 5 stars Guitar learning book for beginners.......2007-07-20

This is indeed a very excellent book for the beginners. It teaches very good techniques, how to read music, different bits. One can learn a lot just by going through the book. The CD provided with this book is additionally helpful for the people who are learning by themselves. However, it is always advisable to take some initial lessons from a professional.

Book Description

What a thrill for any musician: playing a fine-sounding instrument that he or she has lovingly crafted from scratch. With this richly illustrated manual, well-known luthier and guitarist John Bogdanovich shows exactly how to build that first, beautiful guitar, using traditional, time-tested methods. All that’s required are basic woodworking techniques and a minimally equipped shop. Bogdanovich discusses the anatomy of the guitar, sound, choosing an instrument, selecting woods, templates and molds, and preparation. In more than 300 pages of text, he painstakingly lays out the details of construction, from assembling the neck and sides to installing the fingerboard and bridge.

5 out of 5 stars The best one I read.......2007-04-11

This book is an example of passion with the guitar. It's well written, beautifully photographed covering all steps of classical guitar construction that follows a high grade standard. Even if you don't want to build a guitar, buy it just for the beauty of its pages. I have bought a lot of books about lutherie, but this is one is far the best.
It makes evident in every detail how Mr Bogdanovich loves what he do. Seems to me he had a very good time written it. Go deep!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent..........2007-03-09

Very well written and presented, although I agree that there's nothing truly 'modern' here; a formal presentation of lattice bracing or composite tops (10 year old technology) would be needed to earn the 'modern' moniker. But for traditional style building (with interesting personalized wrinkles) it's an excellent text. Highly recommended, and the first true competition for the Cumpaino.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-02-18

The author starts the budding luthier with the construction of molds and jigs. The order in which this is presented is excellent: by the time you get to the construction of the solera, you should be quite proficient at cutting the outline of the guitar in MDF (medium density fiberboard) with a 14" band saw. My solera turned out very well. A note on materials: John notes that the material for the molds will require two 4' x 8' sheets of 3/4" MDF and 1/2 of a 4' x 8' sheet of 1/2" MDF. 4' x 8' sheets of MDF are VERY HEAVY and impossible to work with in a small shop. I purchased 2' x 4' sheets instead and the results were great. Also, a 2' x 4' sheet 5/8" thick should be substituted for one of the 3/4" sheets, for the lining bender jig. This will save a bit of planing.

One should note the typo on page 51: under "Cutting the Pieces," "10 inches wide and 20 inches long" should be "10 inches wide and 24 inches long." On page 58 where John specifies "six pieces 24 1/2 inches x 10 1/2 inches," pieces only 24" x 10 1/2" will do very well. The plan for the caul on page 123 is missing. The author says it was accidentally cut out of the book, and he wrote, "The laminations are masonite thinned down to about .090 to make them easier to bend. I use about four of them. The outer one has sixteen pieces of 3/4 MDF glued from top to bottom along the length as shown on page 123. The pieces that go over rounded areas must be shaped to fit flat on their entire surface."

The author will offer printed plans for the guitar at some point in the future.

Overall a very nice book. I've just finished bending the sides according to John's instructions and I look forward to the next steps in this very interesting project.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for classical guitar makers.......2007-02-15

This book is sure to please the most discriminating maker of guitars. The photos of all the different phases of guitarmaking are clearly explained with a multitude of colored photos. The language is clear and concise. The illustrations and color photos speak for themselves, of the many varied operations involved in guitar making. My only problem was figuring out how to make a 15ft and 25 ft radius jigs.Of all the 12 books I own on guitarmaking. This book, in my opinion, is the most comprehensive in detailing , every aspect of this demanding and rewarding craft. My hats off to Mr. bogdanovich for an excellent job.

5 out of 5 stars Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk.......2007-02-06

Jack Bogdanovich's book is a must for anybody who might be considering making his or her own classical guitar, and very interesting for those who like the instrument, but have no plans to build one.

If you have a chance to lay hands on one of his guitars, you'll see that he can walk the walk; read this book, and you will know that he can talk the talk, too.

I have trouble figuring out which end of a screwdriver to use, but with Jack's book in hand, I think even I might be able to follow his detailed and well-illustrated instructions without hurting myself too bad.

It's a steal at this price.

5 out of 5 stars All You Really Need.......2007-04-27

This is a really one of a kind great collection of classical guitar studies.
Some reviewers have complained unreasonably:
1. "It lacks a spiral binding" Most guitar collections lack this. So what? Go to Kinkos and get it bound for 4 bucks if it's an issue. It's no harder to use than any other book. Geeze.
2. "It lacks fingerings." This is not true. It has the fingerings the composers wrote with the piece. If a composer didn't write fingerings, it doesn't add them. This is a collection of the great guitar studies AS THEY WERE WRITTEN. Usually the fingering is obvious anyway.
3."Lacks Chord diagrams." Hello! This is classical guitar, not a rock fake book!

DO NOT heed these complaints. This is a great book and you will improve immeasurably as a guitarist by playing them in order. I did.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2007-03-13

This is a good collection of studies, well graded, and a lot of music for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Could use a little updating, but still very good.........2007-03-03

I've noticed that since Noad produced this book, about 20 years ago now, a lot of the Sor studies in it have appeared in facsimile via Tecla or other sources, and some of the tempos are not the same as the originals..this is also true of Segovia's famous 20 Sor studies, but generally this is not a major issue. Noad's selections are very good, and his editorial fingerings can be helpful. He does add right-hand fingerings for clarification in some cases too, but of course this is editorial advice, not necessarily the way Sor or Giuliani might have played a particular piece. 19th century guitarists tended to use the thumb more than most classical guitarists do now, for instance. Noad also does the student the favor of pointing out the basic purpose of each study to concentrate your efforts, something the composers didn't always do.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-06-04

This book is for people who play classical guitar well enough to be able to read the music and understand right hand technique. It is not an instruction book. Rather it is a collection of pieces written by three of the giants among composers in the classical guitar world. These studies are musically excellent and develop skills very well. Some commentators have mentioned that you need a teacher--I agree, but this book is not about instruction. It's simply a collection of music, music thqat when played develops specific skills (that's the purpose of an etude, or study). Some people have criticized the book for not including right hand fingerings. The book is given as these 19th century composers wrote the music. Nothing is added. I guess I'm a little irked when people want to criticize something for being something other than what they wish--like criticizing a milk cow for not being a sow. This is simply a great collection of studies.
This is for classical guitar players and is invaluable--the best collection I've seen. I've used it for supplemental music for my students for 8 years and it is the best skill building/musical collection out there.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth every penny........2003-11-28

Not involved with playing any instr. in over 10 years, i acquired the desire to play the guitar, picked up a cheap fender 16 months ago (really cheap) and to-date, i've been studying classical guitar for about 5 months. im still working on the noad series instructions, but wanted to fill in 'gaps'. even tho, im only up to #11 in the book, i can see that this book is going to be priceless. firstly, for those that are SERIOUS in learning as much as possible for classical style playing, i would (just as many others would) suggest finding (usually its by word of mouth) a good classical guitar instructor. he/she will be the only one that will be able to guide you in the 'correct' techniques to master with the left hand transitions.. barring.. the 'hinge'.. etc, and the 'correct' right hand finger picking with the corner of the finger. i strongly, and sincerely suggest those that are interested in classical guitar studies to pick up this book. its an excellent repitoir that combines needed technical studies with the classical style music of the classical guitar.
i do agree with the 'drawbacks' of this book, tho if you combine this book with good instruction and some dedication in practice, the right-hand finger picking should not be of much trouble, since noad does not explicitly tell you what finger to pick with.
the 'binding' of the book would have been nice if bounded with rings.. just make due, dont let this interfere with your studies!! photocopy it if you need to :)
i would not suggest this book to those begginers that know absolutely nothing about the guitar. you'll easily get frustrated. noad assumes you can read the trebble cleff (the musical staff).. simply put, he assumes you can read all the musical notations including those for the guitar.
i wish i could say that those that are intermediate or advanced guitarists should use this book, but i cant 'cuz i can't truly relate what it is to be 'intermediate' or a advanced player :) if you just play accasionally or play mostly chords, then you probably wont get much out of this book... for the rest of us, we'll simply be better guitarists :)

4 out of 5 stars For my dad.......2007-07-03

Being a classical musician myself and watching my dad practice with this book was really great. The dvd is very helpful and the way that the book teaches to read music is very cohesive. The only problem is that it moves kind of fast. However, I do believe this is a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Fun but over all too soon..........2007-05-07

For those of us who are attempting to self-teach classical guitar, I think a DVD is invaluable at the early stages. This is when you are working on the basics of hand position, posture, sitting position etc... If you go wrong here, you could potentially develop bad habits which are much harder to correct later on. From this DVD, you can actually see Scott Tennant demonstrating the right way to play - which is more useful than using static photos or hand sketches you traditionally find in guitar books.

Also, it's great to be able to play duets with the on-screen Scott (once again for those of us who don't have a teacher or anyone else who can play duets with us).

The book itself is fun. The pieces include some memorable tunes. The difficulty level is for the most part reasonable for a beginner like me. The main problem is that the book is quite sparse. I finished all the pieces within a week, and it's not that much fun just repeating pieces over and over again (though maybe that's what you're really supposed to do). And though I have Basic Classical Guitar Method 2, I actually didn't feel proficient enough having gone through book 1 to move straight into book 2.

As a way of filling in the gap, I bought and am currently working through "Solo Guitar Playing" by Fredrick Noad, and it is a MUCH thicker book. Noad himself claims in the introduction that there is enough material here for 2 years of study! Now I like the sound of it, but it doesn't mean that Classical Guitar for Beginners was not satisfying or useful - just that it didn't have enough meat on the bone.

Also, the DVD version doesn't show Scort playing every single piece in the book. In that way, the CD version is superior. It's useful to be able to hear a piece being played right first so you know when and where you are stuffing it up.

5 out of 5 stars classical guitar.......2007-04-12

As someone completely new to guitar, I am finding this book to be very easy to follow and very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Closest thing to having a teacher in the room.......2006-03-22

My background in music was almost non-existent, and I couldn't read music *at all* before buying this book. I bought it because I wanted to have some background before seeking out a classical guitar teacher. My goal is to be a musician and learn about music the right way, not follow some kooky guitar method and play phony versions of pop songs.

Well, this DVD is like having a teacher in the room with you. Almost everything my teacher told me in my first several guitar lessons were addressed in this book and DVD. Tennant doesn't cover every little nuance -- and that's where a teacher comes in -- but this method DOES WORK WELL for the totally rank beginner like myself. Even if you're sitting in a room with a TV and no instructor, you can really learn to play.

This book has kept me very busy playing and practicing for three months at least, and I am not going to be through with it for a while yet. Even when I am done and on to volume 2 I'm sure I'll still be playing pieces from this book for practice.

Best Things: Scott Tennant has a friendly style and he doesn't oversimplify or overcomplicate things. Now that I know a little bit more about learning to play classical guitar, I can appreciate the effort put into making the exercises in this book "musical". Even when you know only a few notes on one string, he has you playing a "first string polka" that sounds like music. Many other books or methods have fingering exercises that go on and on and are not very musical at all. There are a few exercises in this method that have you walking up and down the fretboard in a pedantic way, but these are brief and the material focuses on the "musical" pieces, which is much more fun.

Having the DVD is the best part of this tool. You cannot replace the experience of seeing/hearing/playing along with an experienced player. It teaches you timing and how your notes are "supposed" to sound. You could play all the exercises in this book with a cruddy, twangy tone to your notes and you'd never know it if you didn't have the CD or DVD to measure against. The DVD material along with the book is about to create a revolution in music instruction for the home, I think.

Cons: On the TV it is sometimes hard to represent notes, because staff lines are so thin, on a white background. Maybe my TV stinks, and this would look better on a computer monitor. Most of the time you can tell what the note is, but it is really better to be reading from the book ... the online music does give you a nice crutch though when playing duets with Scott.

And the binding of the book ... why isn't this book spiral bound? The book IS lightweight enough to put on a music stand, but man if it were spiral bound it would be sooo much easier. This is a small nit to pick, but publishers should know this by now. I usually end up photocopying pages out of books and putting them on my music stand, so maybe they figure most people just do that.

A big warning should come on the part of the DVD about re-stringing your guitar. He shows you how to make a single loop around the bridge, and I had a couple of nylon strings slip out of that knot while I was winding the string onto the key. One of these snapped out hard enough to scratch the surface of my guitar, which sucked. I then started twisting them a couple of times at the bridge so they wouldn't slip, but I don't know why he doesn't address this or mention the possibility.

There really aren't any more cons. This is a great product. Eventually you'll need an instructor but this book really will stand in for an instructor for your first few months of playing.

4 out of 5 stars Perseverance Pays Off.......2006-02-21

Learning to play any musical instrument is hard work. The guitar is no exception. Anyone planning to buy a self-instruction book should be dedicated to making the effort and willing to work past the frustration that is part of it. If, like me, you have played only keyed instruments, or never played at all, your fingers will scrabble over the fingerboard as you attempt to put the right finger at the right fret on the right string and pluck that same string with the other hand. You will make many mistakes, but if you work past that point you will find that muscle memory eventually takes over. The pieces Tennant provides are well suited to that purpose. Your job is to practice these pieces over and over and over and over until your fingers know where to go, and your ear tells you that your playing is beginning to sound like music.

Tennant is tough. He gives you a lot to learn at each lesson, and if you don't already know how to read music, it will take you a while to get through this book. Once you've gone through it, go through it again, picking up what you missed the first time. Even though I am now in Book 2, I keep going over the pieces in Book 1 and my playing steadily improves.

At the end of this book you will still be a beginner, but you will have some ability to read music and some degree of comfort with the guitar. If you have worked hard you may be impressed with how far you have come and perhaps be motivated to buy Book 2.

4 out of 5 stars Classical Gas!.......2007-09-17

This is a great collection of Mason Williams tunes. The included CD contains tracks which are a nice addition to a casual listening library, and also assist a guitarist in emulating the expression that Williams conveys with each piece. In the sheet music, the tabulature that accompanies the classical notation is also quite useful. The book is peppered with anecdotes from Williams' career, providing additional insight into the circumstances and motivation behind each piece. These are helpful in understanding Williams' mind-set and intent for each piece.

The only major criticism I have of the item actually concerns its binding. Most guitarists will want the sheet music to lie open flat on a bench or music stand. However, when I first opened the book fully to make it lie flat, several of the pages of sheet music came loose. Obviously, I can still play the music, but the book itself now lacks a certain visual appeal.

4 out of 5 stars For Teaching Only--Not Your Listening Pleasure.......2007-01-10

If you want to learn how to play some of Mason Williams songs, this is the book/CD you'll want to get. If you want to learn some of the biographical history of Mason Williams, this is the book. If you want to listen to Mason Williams Music (Classical Gas, Riding on the Low Moon, etc.) on a nice summer day (CD included) with a tall glass of lemonade, this is not the book/CD.

The book spends a lot of time telling us about Mason and his career and then gives us the music with guitar tabs--very nice. The CD is more of a dissection of the songs in the book and on some, playing each part.
The book is a must for Mason Williams fans and lovers of his music especially because his site no longer sells this set.

My 15 year old daughter (a beginner) is picking up the tunes rather fast so that is another plus for the book and it's information--or, is it a plus for her? ;-)

I would have preferred a little less on the history and more on the music. You can find the history on his site and more in depth. There are definitely some songs I wanted that were not included and that I haven't been able to find searching on the web.

So, for a beginner I'd give it a B+ and for the advanced player a B- or C+.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Mason.......2007-01-09

I'm a longtime fan of Mason. The songbook is more than just sheet music. It has anecdotes about the songs that bring back fond memories. I also like the performance notes that explain the guitar fingerings used by Mason.
I haven't played classical guitar for many years but this book will get me started.

Sincerely,
Paul

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for Mason Fans.......2006-03-29

5 out of 5 stars Beginner.......2007-07-05

I am a beginner and can play the first 5 songs perfectly. I like how the songs get progressivly more difficult. Great book. The CD is handy to preview how the songs should sound.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, good tunes, easy, yet progressive.......2007-04-05

I recently decided to take up classical guitar on my own after playing piano most of my life and diddling around with electric and acoustic guitars. While this book doesn't give any instruction, it is progressive, starting out with extremely simple pieces and working up to easy yet more complex works. Half way through, the pieces require special fingering, and the tablature and notation help show how it's done. I'd give the book five stars since it delivers what its title describes, but I think the book could have been prefaced with some intro to fingerings and other beginner techniques. Nevertheless, there are many books that cover that issue. The songs in this book have mostly a nice Spanish sound to them, and I have really enjoyed working on them. I'd recommend this book to any beginner, hobbiest, etc.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-09-28

Ehhh, I'm truly disappointed in this book. It is truly for the very beginner and the songs are sub par. Many of the songs are very similar and just wasn't what I was looking for. I was hoping for something with more skill/technical. I would pass on this book if you have prior guitar experience.

4 out of 5 stars Who are you?.......2006-09-26

If you are a classical player, you probably shouldn't be picking up a classical book with "easy" in the title, don't you think? I'm a fingerpicker, and when I get stuck in a merle travis rut, this book is a great way to get out of it. Nothing all that hard, but well presented and chosen.
My only complaints are the same as some other reviewers: the biographies would be better replaced with some technical notes (if I feel the sudden need to read about Sor's life, there's always Google). Also, wire-bound would be nice so I wouldn't have to prop up my tuner and a beer can to hold the book open.

3 out of 5 stars Landis.......2006-04-25

Its ok if you are an absolut beginner but with as many as 50 pieces I think the variation in music and also difficulty could be better.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Benedict offers a thoughtful and articulate text that is useful for beginners and learned guitarists alike!.......2007-05-06

I ordered this book in the hopes that it would be useful not only for my students but for myself as well and it really does deliver. This text, Level I-III, assumes that the student has at least a basic knowledge of music theory but not so much that it's useless for beginners. It starts out with simple diatonic exercises on the first string, a great departure point and a common starting point for many generations of guitarists.

Just as it states on the cover, Benedict emphasizes dynamics, interpretation, phrasing and form almost right from the start. This wide scope permeates the lessons and lends a lightness and freshness to the lessons that keeps the student wanting more. The pacing of the exercises is carefully constructed and there are no big jumps in difficulty, which is great. Equally useful is his addition of random rhythm patterns at the end of each level. With all the emphasis on tone production, dynamics and interpretation, students (and teachers) often neglect their rhythmic mastery and with Benedict's inclusion of these random rhythms and his even-handed approach, one is sure to learn something no matter their experience level!

There haven't been many books that have made my list of instructional essentials but this book and the second volume have proven to be indispensible to myself and to many of my students. The fact that this book just happens to make you a better sight-reader in the mean time is a testament to its transparency and usability. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Useful to have, and easy to use.......2007-02-22

Not a bad price, and not dispiritingly difficult either. Purpose-written guitar sight-reading material is hard to find, good to have this and the companion Level 4-5 book to work from.

5 out of 5 stars The Dirt on Classical Guitar Playing.......2005-10-09

This book is really helpful to those
seriously interested in classical guitar.
All the stuff your teacher never told you
about tone production, nails, and lots
of tips on overcoming technical difficulties
like the bar and tremolo. Solid book,
a real enlightment and great help for me.

5 out of 5 stars cool book.......2000-05-27

This book turned out to be very helpful towards learning to play the guitar in the classical style. As I followed the page by page process of his teaching, I found myself learning in leaps and bounds. There are cd's included which helped me learn some of the songs. Having previous familiarity with music and the guitar helped me advance in this particular style quickly. However, learning to play classical guitar is a lengthy process so I still have many hours of playing left to do. But by the time I get to the end of this book I will have become much better!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dry and somewhat disappointing!!.......2007-01-20

Maybe I was expecting something unique. I thought this book was expensive and uninspired. It has a brief history of Flamenco for which is always helpful but, the examples are repetitive and not very "hip" melodically and there's not much variety. I would recommend Juan Martin's Solo Flamenco book volume 1. There are a wealth of ideas and some history behind some of the Soleas, Alegrias, Rumbas, Sevillanas etc. It also includes CD/DVD package for $20 here on Amazon, The Juan Martin is challenging, but if you want to learn this style it's going to be. You may want to skip this method

3 out of 5 stars What a deception!.......2006-08-29

So many of this title sold so far, but still not one review!!! Have you an idea why!!? This product is a real deception: just because the cds which are supposed to be playing the role of the teacher with such books, are bin bound.

What I mean is that the pair of cds are of no help to understand the techniques taught in the book, as the passages are played by a band with different instruments and with added electrical effects. Cd2 has the same content as cd1 but in slower version. The book is a good one though, but with such a style as the Gypsy Flamenco or Flamenco itself, you need to lean on a serious guide, which the cds do not provide.

I had placed a lot of expectations in that book&cds when ordering it, but.., what a deception!

3 out of 5 stars Exercises.......2007-03-09

If you're looking for a lot of exercises to compliment your classical guitar playing, buy this book. I used to practice the exercises in this instructional guide, but I soon realized learing to play Fernando Sor's twenty solos will get you to a desired level of practice. In fact, if you can find it, the Carulli Metodo Completo de Guitarra will help you along, as well -- but what I'm trying to say is playing and practicing songs instead of exercises will get you to a desired level of sophistication. I'd rather have a lot of new songs under my belt than a lot of exercises. Go ahead and get yourself the Worlds Favorite Solos for Classic Guitar by Ashley Publications, Inc. #43. I'm sure after completing this book, you will be a master of the guitar. After fooling around with this book, try numbers 56, 81, 108, 123, 124, and 125. If you can complete the next six books, I guarantee you will be a master of your instrument. Trust me -- study the songs. Don't spend too much time on exercises unless you're really bored. If you're that bored, check out Eliot Fisk. He has a wealth of material to study (songs by Bach and Mozart). Good luck!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-02-07

This is one of the best books outhere to learn how to play clssical guitar. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Breakin' a sweat with the old nylon.......2005-02-09

This book is the boot camp of classical guitar studies. Only serious students and aspiring nylon knights need apply for this school in a book!!! Reading and understanding musical notation and vocabulary are a must(this book contains no tabulature) for aspiring classical guitarist, and this book certainly leaves nothing out in that aspect. It starts the student of with the basics, but progresses quickly. The studies are actually interesting, challenging and fun to play all the way through. No "Mary had a Little Lamb" or "Three merry Men" songs here to practice your skills on. It certainly kept my interest going in strengthening my weak reading skills. My only complaint is the lack of time spent on proper technique, and the fact that there are no pictures to help the student understand this aspect of classical. But I suppose that could be found elsewhere. I have no regrets in purchasing this book and it has only helped and inspired me in my pursuit of the instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent even for those without formal musical training.......2004-02-16

Excellent book. Does not assume any musical training, explains everything starting with the music notation. The exercises are truly gradual: each introduces only a few new hand positions, and future exercises reinforce hand positions introduced earlier. The early exercises are simple yet sound reasonably well not to be hopelessly boring, and one can hear when one plays them incorrectly. Great book for self-study. It was recommended to me independently by two very good classical guitar players; and my technique and sight-reading skills have improved notably since starting to use this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best........2003-05-11

There are certain books that rise above any other in their field and the Classical Guitar Method by Matteo Carcassi is the one for teaching Classical Guitar. If a student seriously wants to learn to play Classical Guitar, then this method will guide him along the best path available for learning this complex and beautiful instrument. It is a classic, having been written centuries ago, and it has risen to the rigors of times inexorable review. It was written in the 1800's and still serves beginner students with grace, style, and effectiveness.
