My 5-year old daughter loves the Ricky Ricotta books (and so do I); however, the binding on one of the books gave out after two readings. We're left with a handful of loose pages and some Christmas sadness.
My son's first self-read chapter books!.......2006-12-20
My first glance at Ricky Ricotta led me to dismiss these as less-fun items in Dav Pilkey's enormous backlist (he's the author of the humungously fun and kid popular series Captain Underpants, as well as dozens of other titles like Dumb Bunny, Dogzilla, Dragon, etc...) That's not what my kids thought! I was shocked to see my son Ben (age 6) alone on his bed reading Ricky Ricotta all by himself - to himself! It was the first time he ever just sat and read a chapter book by himself. My son loves super heroes and watches shows like Ben10 (about a boy who can become a bunch of alien superheroes). It's that age old subconscious tension between feeling the powerlessness of being a small minor with wanting the world-shifting power they see in adults. Ricky Ricotta is about a little mouse boy who comes into possession (well - maybe it's control over - or maybe just close friendship with...) a super giant powerful robot. They have adventures that involve fighting evil enemies and saving the world. It's handled in a light funny way - like Captain Underpants' style - but without the major scatalogical focus. It's right on the money and little Ben quickly devoured these. Then he read them to his little 3 year old sister. She didn't sit still for all of it (what 3 year old ever sits still for anything?) but she clearly enjoyed them too. I can't recommend them highly enough for kids in the early-reader zone.

My 8 year old loves the Captain Underpants collection by Dav Pilkey that I got him last year. However, my husband and I have done most of the reading to him. I recently got him the entire Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot Collection after reading other reviews that 2nd graders enjoyed reading them. I was skeptical as my son is a slow reader and its a struggle to make him read to us each night. The first night he read Ricky Ricotta I had to make him stop because it was past his bedtime!! He read the first 7 chapters with great enthusiasm. If it hadn't been a school night he would have easily finished the book. The next night he couldn't wait to read again!
Dav Pilkey does a great job of appealing to this age group's sense of humor. My son thinks everything he writes is hilarious and he reads the books over and over rarely tiring of the stories. My son and I highly recommend these books for readers of all levels.
great story, Pages fall out!!!.......2006-10-16
This would be a great book if it wouldn't fall apart. After sitting with it just a little bit and trying to do the flip pages the page just fell out. The story is wonderful and very intertaining for a 4 to 7 year old learning to read, or needing to get interested in reading. I have never had a book that the pages just fall out from the glue.

I would have given it one star, if it weren't for the fact the story and the cartoon illustration and the flip pages are all wonderful.

The books are great, my 4 and 7 year old boys both love them. However, the quality of the construction of the books is poor. When you do the flip-o-rama pages, the pages fall out. The pages are being held together with scotch tape.

My, almost 7 year old, was having trouble reading this summer. Basically, he wanted nothing to do with it. Then, someone recommended this series of Ricky Ricotta's books and he finished 2 books in one week!
I highly recommend for any student who would rather be on the computer in or front of the t.v. The pictures keep them engaged, as well as the short chapters and funny titles.

This was the first chapter book that I read to my kids ages 6.5 and 4. The name alone is funny. The kids wondered how a robot was invented by Ricky Ricotta. This was probably explained in one of the earlier ones.
It is truly a funny book as Dav Pilkey books are absolutely hysterical. All of his books seem to provide adult humor and loads of play on words.
The trouble starts when Ricky Ricotta is forced by his parents to go to his cousin Lucy's house. Her parents are overly loving to him. His uncle hurts Ricky with very strong handshakes. His aunt attacks with a million kisses. EEKK! Typical boy, to think of this as a real annoyance. His cousin only wants to play Princess and other girly games. She has 3 Jurassic pets. I am not sure about how they are alive. I guess this was in one of the earlier books too.
The stinkbugs live on Saturn a really dirty and polluted planet. It is ruled by a Stinkbug leader who cannot even live on such a disgusting planet. He decides that he will rule over the Planet Earth.
His cousin yells about her Rubies. This is when the stinkbugs want to capture her for the Rubies. They decide that she must be the ruler of Earth and they must have her.
Ricky Ricotta tries to come to the rescue with his friendly robot. This does not work and Ricky himself is captured. They feel doomed. Yet, Ricky turns out to be the hero and it is a happy ending for the readers.
My kids loved the short chapters. I thought that they would not like the books because of the black and white photos but it was simple like coloring pages without the colorings. The words in the story were easy enough for my kids to understand. It was a great adventure. I thought that my daughter, age 4, would be lost and not care about a main character that was a male mouse. She loved it. It was something different. They love Dav Pilkey books but this was an adventure book.
I must incompetent but this book comes with a section called Flip-O-Rama. I could not make it work. I think a kid can do a better job! My son loved the way the Stinkbug lost the battle.
I enjoyed the book and plan on reading the first books as this is the sixth. I am sure that it does not matter if we go to the first one after reading this one. Each book can be read separately without needing the previous books. Kids can relate to playing pretend, aunts and uncles who love too much, and who have bad guys and good guys. One more point, Ricky Ricotta wears glasses. So many books do not show glasses especially for the main character.
This is a must read and a great way to introduce chapter books. Enjoy!

I'm an 8 year old boy who has read everything that Dav Pilkey has written. I LOVED this book, so much that I read it twice in one day. It made me laugh. I can't wait for the next Dav Pilkey book!!!

This was an okay book.I first picked up this book because I am a fan of Dav Pilkey, and the Captain Underpants series.However, there were a few things about this book that I did not like. 1.The text was way to simple.
2.There were more pictures than words. I woud recomond this book to anyone in the 4-6 age level. 7-etc. why don't you stick with Captain Underpants for the time being.

My kids LOVE Captain Underpants, but I've found out the hard way that they don't make for very good read-aloud, bed time books. Be warned : These books are set up in comic strip form on a lot of their pages and without showing your kids EVERY page of the book while reading it, they'll be lost in the story. They're really good books, don't get me wrong, just not very good read-aloud book unless you are sitting in a circle or prepared to do the 'finger under the word as you read' type thing. My four and six year old LOVE them though.

Again another excellent and fun book by Dave Pilkey. Great for early readers to read all on their own and to read to younger children, especially those who enjoy the Captain Underpants stories. An excellent book for children to learn that reading is fun.

I have two sons (ages 6 and 8) who both really enjoy this Ricky Ricotta series. After reading the reviews on the paperback versions of these books being flimsy, we decided to spend the extra money and get the hardcover books. They are super! We'll enjoy them for several years to come...then pass them on to other friends/family when we're ready to.

It was a good book because of the great battle. The voodoo vultures from venus sure did get a a good beating. The pictures are really great. Rickys Ricotta's Robot is really mighty robot. I think Kindergardeners - Second grade would like this book a whole lot.

Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot Vs. the Voodoo from Venus isn't as strong an outing as the previous two books in this series. But it's still a good read.
Ricky and his robot are in trouble at home and lose their tv privileges. This allows them to avoid being hypnotized by a vulture bad guy on Venus who wants to (you guessed it) take over Earth. As usual, Ricky is resourceful and the Robot is strong and the good guys save the day.

My son was first drawn to the illustrations in Ricky Ricotta/Mighty Robot series but I held out buying the books because I thought they were "glorified" comic books. However, much to my surprise when I actually read it myself, it was quite hilarious.
The best part was that it was easy enough for my 5 year old to read on his own (with a little help), which was really a major coup as I could not get him to start reading chapter books.
We ended up buying all 7 books and he has already read 4 of them in 2 weeks!

In this, the fourth Ricky Ricotta book, Ricky and the Mighty Robot face their gravest threat yet. Major Monkey is tired of being alone on Mars, and decides that he will conquer the Earth, and to do that he must first put the Mighty Robot out of the way. Can Ricky save the Mighty Robot and the Earth, all at the same time? You bet he can!
This book is great! The drawings are black-and-white, but are quite funny, and go along great with the story, which is hilarious! My ten-year-old son picked out this book (he's into robots right now), and loved it. The book contains some "Flip-o-rama" pages, where you rapidly flip the pages back and forth and watch the somewhat-animated cartoon, which we both thought was pretty cool. The text is pretty short, and definitely not challenging to him, but he nonetheless loved this book. We highly recommend this book.
Pilkey strikes again.......2002-02-13
We just had to get the latest Ricky Ricotta book as my 4 1/2 year old son is in love with Ricky Ricotta and Captain Underpants. I find the Ricky Ricotta series a little less humorous and more boiler plate than the Captain Underpants series, however my son loves them both. The Flip-O-Ramas are great as usual and my son now makes up the sound effects. He also really enjoys going through how to draw each character at the end. He hasn't tried to actually draw them yet. All of the books in this series have a villain from another planet who Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot is able to defeat and put in jail. My son loves seeing the old villains in the jail windows at the end of the story. I sure hope the next book in the series comes out soon because I don't know how long my son can wait. If your kids like Captain Underpants, Ricky Ricotta is likely to be a favorite, although I think some older kids may find it boring in comparison. It is easier to read, however, and would be a good book for a beginning reader to read themselves.

i purchased this book to read about 1 of the greatest racers in MX history. what i got was a book that is little more than a copy of some of the bio from racing programs. a grand total of 31 pages including the index and glossary. i am sure the info is accurate, but this book contains absolutely nothing that a fan of Ricky Carmichael hadnt already seen many times before. definately was not what i expected it to be. go to the book store and buy 2-3 MX magazines, you will learn a lot more about Carmichael there. dont waste the money on this book.

This is an activity book that goes along with the series. It has trivia questions, mazes, jokes,word scrambles,word searches, codes etc... My 6 year old loves it. It has a section that goes along with each book.

I have purchased this and every book so far in the series for each little guy in my life. They love the books and ask for more each time they finish one. I am glad to give them something that encourages reading and dosn't break the wallet.

I really did not like the book. If I had to give three reasons it would have to be it did not make sense. It was not making sense because there were too many words for one meaning. The book really did not have any meaning .
If I had to pick the worst thing about this book. It would have to be that it was not interesting. All it was about was a robot. I really did not like this book because it had no color.
Great story!!!.......2003-01-14
My 6 year old son's reading level was in between. Not good enough for some books but others that he could read were too babyish. This series is a wonderful compromise. It has the look and feel of the Capt. Underpants which is still out of his reach but so very interesting to him. While driving from Florida to NY state, when given the choice between watching a video or reading he chose to read the Mighty Robot, he's never made that choice on his own before. On top of all this, it is a warm, funny story that appeals to the first grade male population, a great find.
A great book for early male readers.......2001-11-24
At age 7, my son had mastered the basics of reading and refused to touch those step into reading books anymore because he thought they were boring. This book is great for readers who are in the transition of stepping up to chapter books. It is an easy,and interesting enough a book that my son can, and wants to, read it by himself in bed. While he loved Captain Underpants, he found many of the words and concepts (like "reverse psychology") a little difficult to grasp alone so that book needed adult help. Ricky Ricotta gave him confidence because he could easily read it ,and yet it wasn't a "baby" book. I also find that most early chapter books are written with the female reader in mind. This one isn't.

This is one of the greatest books I haved ever read for a very long time. I recomend this book to people who don't understand the latin community. This book explores the lifes of many latin artist who's life you don't know; this book goes on to talk about artists who's lifes where cut short like Selena's.
