Verdi is a proud python, flourishing in the flower of his youth. He loves to swiftly slither around the forest, brandishing his bright yellow skin, and can't fathom why anyone would want to be sleepy and green like the adult snakes he knows. Verdi insists, as so many youngsters do, "I will never be lazy, boring or green!" Despite his resolve to stay young, one day he notices a patch of green spreading down the length of his body. Verdi does everything he can think of to erase this first sign of the inevitable tide of age. But in his frenzy of youthful, Icarus-like bravado, he nearly kills himself. Finally, Verdi learns that even though he can't stop the aging process, green skin won't keep him from being a fun-loving, young-at-heart, figure-eight-forming snake.
Janell Cannon's illustrations are exquisite. As in her award-winning Stellaluna, not only are the animal drawings painstakingly accurate, they are also awash with movement and beauty. The countless shades of greeny-yellow and yellowy-green have the effect of a cool eye compress for the reader--calming, inviting, and enticing readers to reach into the lush environment of the pages. Verdi's lesson is never didactic, always compelling, and pleasantly surprising. (Ages 4 and older)
Book Description
Young Verdi doesn’t want to grow up big and green. He likes his bright yellow skin and sporty stripes. Besides, all the green snakes he meets are lazy, boring, and rude. When Verdi finds a pale green stripe stretching along his whole body, he tries every trick he can think of to get rid of it--and ends up in a heap of trouble. Despite his efforts, Verdi turns green, but to his delight, he discovers that being green doesn’t mean he has to stop being himself. “Cannon is on a roll, her gift for creating memorable characters and scenes on glorious display in this tale of a feisty python hatchling.”--Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
A DELIGHT TO THE EYE, GREAT STORY AND KIDS LOVE IT........2007-09-14
This is a wonderfully written story of a young python, a young yellow python, who does not want to grow old a boring like the adult green pythons he see around him. The art work in this slender book is absolutely breath taking. The artist has blended his colors perfectly and created life like studies of these wonderful snakes but not life like situations as far as the snake world goes. This is the charm of the story. Few, if any, want to actually grow older and kids in particular do not want to do and act as "boring" adults. This tale lets the child know that we all can keep our child like wonder and love of fun into our adult years. I read this one to the second and third graders and they catch the meaning of the story quite well with a bit of prompting. They love the pictures, in particular the ones where the author has made the snakes rather hard to spot. I also not that this is one of the more popular books chosen by the children when they have their "read alone time." An endorsement of a children by children is as about as good as it gets. I must say though, adults will enjoy reading this with the children also which I feel is important as kids can sort of sense when your heart is not really in the reading. Recommend this one highly. Very much recommend you add this one to your child's collection or to your school library.
VERDI.......2007-01-17
Beautifully written and illustrated book for children of all ages with a wonderful message.
Great book!.......2006-11-10
I bought this book for my four year old daughter. She loves it and wants me to read it to her over and over. She loves the story and the colors in the book. I love the educational and fun value that the book provides. I would highly recommend the book to other parents.
verdi good!, but not stellaluna.......2006-09-07
My 7 1/2 yr old 2nd grade daughter & I read Stellaluna off her summer reading list. I had heard of/seen this book around, but it had never grabbed me. I was quite surprized at the fabulous illustrations, the story that draws you in, & the author's ability to make a bat lovable. I was eager to read Verdi, expecting the same experience. I thought the story was OK & the illustrations beautiful, but the story itself lacked depth to me. The young whippersnapper & wise old sage qualities hit me as being more relevant to an adult reader. Children can not adequately appreciate the age contrast, & how quickly time passes, & how we all become more boring & old than oiur young minds thought we would. Curiously, my daughter liked Verdi as well, if not better than Stellaluna. To each his own - read & see what you think.
excellent book!.......2006-07-27
This book not only has beautiful illustrations but also tells the tale of growing up from a child's perspective (well, a snake's...). Our three year old LOVES it! It also gives a glimpse into life in the tropics which for our Minnesota boy is exotic! Thumbs up!

AN A (AS IN "ARIA") FOR THIS SET OF WORDS AND MUSIC.......2006-01-03
The marriage between words and music has never been better produced. And more popularly priced. Each volume includes two compact discs with the complete opera, as well as a hardcover book containing the libretto in it original language and an English translation with annotated commentary and expert commentary. Stunning color photographs illustrate the history of the opera and the production's performers, including Grace Bumbry, Birgit Nilsson, Renata Scotto and Franco Corelli. The slipcased set includes Aida, Carmen, Madama Butterfly, La Boheme, La Traviata and The Marriage of Figaro; each volume is also priced individually. Break out the bubbles ... that's "bubbles" as in Beverly Sills, the star of La Traviata.

great resource & e-z enuff for non-techies.......2007-10-16
a smart and easy to follow text. i used it for developing lesson plans to teach non-professional media makers at our local public access center how to shoot, compress and upload video for the web.

Good guide in vlogging.......2007-09-04
This book reads nice, makes you wiser, gives you a very good inside-look in the world of vlogging. I liked the writing style of Verdi and you'll notice he is the right person to give your attention if you like to know everything (well, almost everything) about setting up your own videoblog.
Practical and useful.......2007-02-22
This is a great resource to have on your library shelf. Written in a down-to-earth style, it comes packed with practical information for setting-up your video blog, but also some good insider tips on how to do it better, faster and at less cost than you might have imagined.
All you need to get started blogging with video.......2006-07-15
I've been a blogger for almost five years now, and only now am I starting to catch up with the vlogging (videoblogging) wave. So this book seemed like a natural choice to get my questions answered.
Not only was I not dissapointed, but I learned a whole lot more than I expected. From coming up with a style for your vlog, to planning your vlog posts, including a host of tips on how to best shoot, edit, compress, publish and promote your videos, the book covers all the bases you will need to know about in order to get your video blog off the ground. The only part where I felt it could have gone into a little more detail, including publishing options such as Google Video and YouTube, is where it talked about video hosting options.
"Secrets of Videoblogging" doesn't take much time to read, yet if offers tons of rewards for those curious about video blogs and how to get one going. I don't know about you, but I am going to get my camera ready to shoot some video. See you in AskManny.com!
Comprehensive, clear, and fun to read---If you want one book on vlogging this is it.......2006-05-27
Full disclosure----I know the authors and am mentioned in the book.
OK, now onto the book itself. I'm going to buy 4 copies of Secrets of Videoblogging for the technology education afterschool program I help run in NYC. The book is a great reference, with clear step by step instructions for how to produce the videoblog that meets your needs.
Ryanne and Michael have been educating people about how to set up their own videoblogs at the website freevlog.org for some time now. They bring their expertise to bear in this book going wider and deeper. They go into all the technical aspects of videoblogging as well as the genre, legal, promotional, and social aspects of the form. There's more to videoblogging than just the technology and this book gets at that. Figuring out how all the different puzzle pieces fit together can be a challenge, and this book will help the newcomer synthesize the various parts involved in videoblogging.
One thing that is really handy are all the case studies of current videobloggers to illustrate how people are using the medium today.
I have been videoblogging for around a year and a half. I speak about it at museums, universities, and conferences. I write about videoblogging. I produce my own videoblog. I run a program where we teach dozens of teens to videoblog. And I still learned so much reading this book. If you want to videoblog, you are a videoblogger who wants to keep growing as a storyteller and media maker, or you just are interested in learning about this new medium, get this book. I would particularly recommend it to educators. I showed it to some high school students I worked with and they couldn't stop looking at it.

La Traviata Ricordi.......2003-11-15
Very good book. Every song and ever note is there. This is my favorite opera and I had a ball singing along with the songs from the book. The only problem was that the songs did not hold titles, it was just a continuous flow.
Lousy editing.......2003-05-05
The CD's are great but the editing of the libretto - unbelievably lousy. The annotations for the different tracks and scenes are nowhere near the tracks and scenes they describe. It was a real challenge to try to untangle the whole thing. The previous reviewer gave great detail in describing the mess. And yes, the libretto for CD2 is just as bad..........
Music is great; the text editor should be fired.......2003-04-23
I'm a beginner to opera and have enjoyed some other Black Dog Opera books (Rigoletto and Tosca). As far as I know (remember, I'm a beginner), the singing on this one is great and the opera is great, but the text editor for this La Traviata should be fired! Let me count the ways:
· The listing of the CD tracks, at the end, is titled La Traviata by Giacomo Puccini. Puccini?! (It's Verdi, as correctly stated elsewhere in this book.)
· Track 15, Alfredo's aria "Oh mio rimorso," is lauded at page 90, after the text to track 16! Obviously the commentary on track 15 should accompany the text for track 15. But it gets worse . . .
· The libretto completely omits the text for Alfredo's aria "Oh mio rimorso"! It's just not there; the libretto skips right from the text for track 14 to the text for track 16. I can only wonder what Alfredo sang.
· Midway through the text for track 16, the commentary announces that track 23 begins. (Obviously it doesn't.) On the next page, still during track 16, the text announces that disc 2, track 1 begins.
· The commentary on track 16 is placed after the text for track 17, two pages too late.
· The commentary on Disc 1, track 24 is placed after the text for Disc 2, track 1, two pages too late.
And all this is after listening only to Disc 1; who knows what further editing errors await me on Disc 2.
I like Black Dog and plan to order more because I'm hoping this incredibly shoddy editing work is isolated. But had I known how frustrating it would be to try to work through this libretto, I would have passed.
A Great Introduction To Opera And Beverly Sills.......2002-12-15
The 2 reviews for this particular product are mixed. One reviewer is clearly in love with the quality of the recording and talents of the singers and the other says that this La Traviata is not his first choice. When you have Beverly Sills as an opera heroine, that should always be your first choice, unless you try the rest and finally decide to hear the best. This is without argument the best La Traviata recording and there are so many reasons for this conclusion. First of all, Black Dog Opera Library series has great performances of opera captured on quality sound and full of illustrated pages profiling the life of the composer and historic background of the opera, as well as a bio on the singers. The libretto is precise and embellished with notes on key moments (arias, ensembles, etc) of the opera.
Beverly Sills (Violetta) has sung the role 54 times in the course of 63 days. She is equally as powerful an actress as she is a singer, at paar with her contemporary of the 60's, Maria Callas. In this recording (1971) her voice is still a fine instrument, and she conveys a broad range of artistic value. In the first act, the party act in which she first meets Alfredo (Nicolai Gedda in excellent vocal character), she is bubbly and appropriately festive (she even laughs) and provides us with an operetta-like charm. Her tour de force scene comes at the end of the first act, from the melodious way she sings "A Fors E Lui" to the coloratura showpiece, "Sempre Libera", which she ends with an E flat over a high C. In her Act 2 duet with Germont (apty sung by Rolando Panerai) she moves us with her suffering pathos in her lines "Ditte A La Giovine", "Morro La Mia Memoria" and her farewell to Alfredo "Amami Alfredo". In the confrontation scene where she belts out a tense "Invitato A Qui Seguirmi", and the ensuing "Alfredo, Alfredo, di questo core" are all fine moments for Beverly Sills, her voice even rising above the chorus ensemble at the end. Her final scenes, from "Addio Del Passato" to the last breath she takes, is remarkable.
This recording is just one of two recordings with the same group- the John Alldys Choir, Aldo Ceccato conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the singers- Beverly Sills, Nicolai Gedda and Rolando Panerai. Either of these two recordings are great introduction to opera for novices and the art of Beverly Sills. Look no further if you want a great recording of the most intimate and romantic opera that Verdi ever composed. It is a story of love, a portrait of a woman who gives up her glamorous Parisian lifestyle as a courtesan and sacrifices even her own happiness for the man she loves. It is safe to say that this is the most romantic opera, full of rich melody and great acting. At the hands of the right performers, it's a memorable experience.
The Perfect Opera And The Greatest Traviata.......2002-09-25
Eventhough it sounds like a delusion or an exaggeration, I am very sincere when I praise this Black Dog Opera Library recording of La Traviata as the greatest recording of them all. Contrary to what the reviewer said of the performers (Sills and Gedda being past their prime and their voices shrill and terrible sounding which is inaccurate) this is the perfect version and the one all opera fans and Verdi lovers should have. The Black Dog Opera Library series always contain great recordings and the pages are illustrated with dozens of operatic imagery and as always, there is information on the history of the composer and the opera's performance. Beverly Sills and Nicolai Gedda (although they are older, but the focus should always be the voice and not the age of the singers) provide a lush, romantic vocal beauty to the roles of opera's greatest lovers, Violetta and Alfredo. Beverly Sills is the ultimate diva of coloratura, dramatic and bel canto roles and her Violetta has excellence and elegance that is unsurpassed, Gedda's Alfredo is genteel, passionate and driven, while the talents of Rolando Panerai (Giorgio Germont) is a superb baritone with "fatherly" compassion, and the conductor Aldo Ceccato orchestrates a precise, beautiful score that is effective in every scene. I highly recommend you purchase this recording and you will not regret it. The only flaws of the book is that it is disorganized in the libretto, but with that overlooked, what counts is the fine caliber of the performance. Other Blac Dog Opera Library recordings you should take a look at is Georges Bizet's Carmen and Mozart's The Magic Flute, both recordings being the best of the recordings for those operas. Enjoy La Traviata, with its tragic and touching love story of a dying courtesan who gives up everything for the love of one great man. The music is definately Verdian, heart-rendering, intimate, soulful, elegant and festive, and tremendously moving in the final scenes. Five Stars Well Deserved.

There's no voice like that of opera singer Leontyne Price, and in this retelling of Aida, published in paperback for the first time, we discover that her writer's voice is equally moving. This tale of the Ethiopian princess-turned-slave, her soldier lover, and their inevitable tragedy is a favorite of Price, who reveals her feeling of sisterhood with the doomed Aida in the book's afterword. Price brings just enough distance to this story of love, jealousy, war, envy, and suicide to temper her passion. Telling the tale of Aida, one of the world's most famous--and tragic--operas, in appropriate language and tone is a task to which Price is more than equal.
Book Description
With depth and understanding, acclaimed diva Leontyne Price retells this famous opera about the beautiful princess of Ethiopia. “The Dillons magnificently capture the drama with powerful full-page illustrations that resemble stage sets. . . . Ideal for reading aloud during an Egyptian unit, in music classes, to children attending the opera, or for the pure aesthetic experience.”--Booklist
Customer Reviews:
beautiful.......2006-11-04
This is as beautiful as the opera ( not the foolish broadway play imitation.)
The illustrations are rich, the story line is clear. Well done.
Aida.......2006-04-12
In the romantic book, Aida, Leontyne Price takes you to a new time and place where your position on the "food chain" doesn't matter. Aida is an Ethiopian princess whose father, the king, is at war with the Egyptians. When Aida was on her first trip over the kingdom wall some Egyptian soldiers kidnapped her without knowing that she was the princess. She was taken to the king of Egypt and made a slave to the princess of Egypt, Amneris. One day while Aida was doing her duties she saw the Captain of the Egyptian army, Radames, and for them both it was love at first sight. They secretly spent time with each other and spoke of running away to Ethiopia and getting married so that their lands can forever live in harmony, only to find out that after a great victory of Radames's that he was to marry princess Amneris. Aida, feeling betrayed tells Radames, that if he loves her, then he will run away with her tonight. That was a very hard decision for him to make because he couldn't bare the thought of never seeing Aida again but he also didn't want to leave his home land. But in the end he chose to leave. So when they started to run, someone caught them and Radames gave himself up but Aida managed to escape. Will Radames and Aida ever see each other again? Or will Radames die a horrible death? Read to find out.
long-time fan.......2005-06-06
This particular book of Aida (there are others) is the most exceptional because the story is written by Leontyne Price, the actress who actually played Aida on stage and the magnificent illustrations by Leo and Diane Dillon. The book is simple and romantic but the most important part that many of the book's fans don't mention (or notice) is the realistic illustrations by the Dillons. The Ethiopians and the Egyptians are depicted exactly as they should be: African. And the fact that the pictures are drawn with vivid colors and patterns with a great legendary storyline proves the fact that a book about two black lovers can be just as passionate and captivating as white European love stories.
Aida Rocks!.......2001-10-10
I read this book and marvelled at the incredible illustrations. I'm a teacher, so I shared it with my young students. They didn't understand everything, but they sure did appreciate the artwork and story line. I'm buying it again as a gift for my niece's 12th birthday. She is obsessed with Egypt and Egyptian subjects. The Aida Broadway production recently came through Austin at the Bass Concert Hall, but we were unable to attend. This truly is the next best thing. When read correctly, it pleases the senses so much more (or as much as to some people) than hearing the production.
Not too impressed..........2001-09-11
WARNING WARNING...do not expect too much from this book if you are a fan of Elton John's Broadway musical and not the actual opera. I found this book in the library shortly after seeing the traveling version of the new "Aida" (it was AWESOME) and, while the book does have gorgeous pictures and the story is told from the point of view of someone who practically lives in Aida's shoes, I was disappointed with the overall story. It was completely unlike the show I saw. I realize that the opera and the Broadway show are totally different. However, I found this book to be confusing and was unimpressed by the sloppy style of the writing...loved the musical, though!!

A former star Quaterback who now enjoys his golf.......1998-08-24
This book was written towards the begining of his career and shows him in a reasonable light. Not as we all grew to know him. Highlights his career at both Brigham Young and Chicago Bears. Ineresting character to have attended BYU (no alcohol). Shows his love and affection towards his friends and his absolute detest of the media! This book is a little difficult to read because it was written so early in his career and you know about the things he did later in his career which contradict things he states in the book, although he did forcast his retirement would improve his golf!!
