To each their own..........2007-10-01
I picked this book up for free at an orchard, they have a great book give away system. I had heard of this before but never read it. It was okay, but I'm sure I'll never read it again. The story is about 3 sisters and their mom on a ranch is Mexico. The older sister marries the younger one's love, and the story takes off. The problem is, I didn't connect with any of these characters. They story would have grim reality, then fantasy in the next paragraph. I can undrestand why some people would enjoy this, but it's not my thing. I think this is one of those books that you'll love or hate. If you love this book, you'll be shaking your head and wondering what's wrong with me that I didn't like it. If you didn't care for it, you'll understand what I'm saying. Whatever, to each their own.

The story of Elena De la Garza, the youngest daughter of Tita, is told by Tita's granddaughter. Cultural tradition is that as the youngest daughter, Tita must remain with her mother, unmarried, to care for her until she dies.
Tita's sister Gertrudis marries Tita's love Pedro. Rosaura has love fire and goes off to the Revolution to couple with a general in the army and becomes an officer of the army herself. This book is fantasy, magic, emotion, reality of love, told in chapters headed by ancient Mexican recipes handed down for generations. Ingeniously constructed, with a beautiful voice, this book is a classic.
Wonderful book - one of my favorites!.......2007-07-20
Laura Esquival's story is about love and passion intertwined with food and family. Each chapter begins with a delicious recipe that connects to the story about Tita, the heroine of the book.
You fall in love with the characters, laugh and smile when good things happen, and cry when unfortunate events tear at their hearts. It's a page turner that fires up the imagination. It will make you hungry and want to fall in love at the same time.
This is one of my favorite books. I read it at least once a year.
Like water for chocolate .......2007-06-13
This book is a story is about a young girl that is in love with this young man. When he wants to go ask her hand in marriage Mama Elena says "No." The reason that she says no is because of a stupid tradition. That says that the youngest girl in the De la Garza family can not get married. They have to take care of there mother till she dies.
So when the young man finds out he thinks that the closes why he can get to Tita is by marring her sister. So he does. When Tita finds out she is heart broken. Not only did she just lose the man that she loved; now she had to live seeing him with her sister. What really hurt her most was that she had to make the wedding cake. When she was making some of her tears got into the ingredients and that mad the cake go bad. While her sister was eating it she felt sick and throw-up all over her white dress. Rosaura said that Tita was trying to ruin her wedding night by making her sick.
I really like the way that the author describes everything so good. Like when Tita was making dinner, how she was cutting the chilies, and the sound that the meat made when it touched the hot pan. I also liked the setting that the author had. Some thing that I would change would be the ending. But I had to read it two times to get it. But this is a really good book so you should read it if you like soap-opera romance,and fairy- tale.

Like Water for Chocolate is a wonderful, magical even mystical ride. A lyrical tale of food, love, romance and heartbreak. Highly recommended.
Laura Esquivel writes a beautiful story that will stay with you for years.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A Great Poetry Anthology.......2007-08-22
One can always quibble about who should have been included in an anthology of American poetry, but that shouldn't be the main criteria by which one judges the collection. I find myself returning again and again to this collection for its range of voices and formats, its classics and fairly new additions. When I am in a writing slump I read a few poems from Contemporary American Poetry and I am inspired. If you're a poet or just love poetry, this book should be on your shelf.
and yet another anthology.......2004-02-09
On my ever growing shelf of poetry anthologies, I have added Poulins' Contemporary American Poetry. It is a fair selection of poems. Of course it is a matter of opinion as to who is missing and who should be in there (no Hecht or Thom Gunn, which is a big loss). There are excellent selections of poems for Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Bly, Gwendolyn Brooks, Rita Dove, Alan Dugan, Robert Hayden, Maxine Kumin, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, and W.D Snodgrass. There are other excellent poets in here (such as Marilyn Nelson and Andrew Hudgins), but the selection of poems isn't the best work they have. For content you might want to look elsewhere, there are important poems and poets that are missing here.
What I do like about this anthology is the way it is put together. Before each poet's selection there is a full page picture of the poet--so you can see what they looked like. It's not important, but it is nice to see. And they bios at the end are great. They cover the poet's life and a little critical work about the poems themselves. The Notes on the Poets is what truly makes this anthology worthwhile.
An excellent sample of poets for novice readers.......1999-04-19
I took a mandatory poetry-writing class in college and this was my textbook. Unfortunately, I learned I am no poet and am probably a very unsophisticated reader of poetry as well. But I have been trying to develop a taste for it, and this book has been invaluable.
This book is a 700+ anthology of 60 poets who have been influential since the end of World War II. Each author has a short bio that sums up the prevalent themes of his/her works. The book features several Pulitzer Prize winners, and showcases all of the prevalent styles and forms of modern poetry.
I recommend this book to anyone unfamiliar with the contemporary poetry scene (or to poetry in general). It has been an invaluable educational aid to me and has given me hours of relaxing reading.

Nice to read something with more detail.......2004-08-14
Tired of the same old, same old. Want to teach your preschooler more about the world. This book is great for an ocean theme unit and an alphabet unit. I have a home daycare with lots of 2 to 4 year olds and this is a favorite book. Now I don't think you are going to get your 18 month old too interested, but I find the preschoolers love the challenge of learning more about the world. I haven't tried any of Jerry Pallotta's other books, but I am planning on adding some more to my home library. Don't let your preschooler think that all things swimming in water are just called fish. Help them improve their vocabulary with this great ocean book. "A is for Alphabet Book. A is also for the Atlantic Ocean. The fish and other creatures in this book live in the North Atlantic Ocean.B is for Bluefish. Everyone loves to catch Bluefish because they love to fight. Their teeth are very, very sharp, so don't ever put your fingers in their mouths. C is for cod" and so on. very clear and colorful pictures.

mr pallotta's alphabet books are huge hits with both my kids, my son (who is not yet reading on his own) especially. he is fascinated with all the information in each of the books. if anything, they sparked his interest in reading after i had (almost) given up!

This is a wonderfully illustrated book, with lots ofinteresting information. Just make sure your child has a longattention span if you intend to read it all at once!
Another Way to Look at the Alphabet.......2000-03-31
"A" doesn't always have to stand for "apple," especially when dealing with older children who haven't mastered the alphabet yet. This book is great to read aloud with young children because of the vivid pictures and interesting topics. The book lends itself to many different extension activities and will encourage children to want to learn more about the ocean. It's a great way to begin a study on ocean animals. I learned something new myself!

Upon opening 'On The Water', I found myself, within the span of four pages, already regretting that I only had 130 left to read.
A magical tale of youth recalled and revisited, H.M. Van Den Brink's story of a young man captivated by the thought of joining a Dutch rowing team is at once compelling and unforgettable.
Anton, the narrator, a slight, awkward boy in WW2 era Holland, enlists in training to compete with a local team. He meets and befriends David, who is friendly, self-confident, outgoing...seemingly all things that Anton is not capable of being.
But on the water, these two are equal...finding themselves acting, thinking, and reacting as one person, when it comes to the sport they both love.
Under the guidance of a slight eccentric coach, who dreams of sending them to into competition beyond their local endeavors, the boys develop a winning synchonicity in their sport, and in their friendship as well.
Books such as this are rare and wondrous to find, though, typically, all too short. The tale weaves back and forth between the training and a re-visit by Anton several years later to the boathouse and river, long since abandoned, although most of the 'action' takes place in the past, in Anton's recollections.
A gem of a book, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.
A beautiful, very Dutch book.......2002-03-16
Anton lives in a new neighbourhood near the Amstel river in Amsterdam in the 1930's. From his early childhood onwards, the river attracts him and when he is about 14 years' old he becomes a member of the rowing club on the other side of the Amstel. Anton is an outsider: the other member are from higher social classes, his father works in the public transport branch. He is also an outsider in other aspects: he observes the others and doubts himself.
But then one day the eccentric Dr. Schneiderhahn chooses anton and David for the coxless two. In Anton's view David is his very antipole: he is self-confident and outgoing. Slowly but surely the two boys become a perfect team. In the summer of 1939 they start competition rowing and they win one race after another. It becomes more and more apparent that they have a chance to participate in the 1940 Olympics in Finland. At the end of the year they promise each other to go on as a team in the next year.
The book is written as a oppressive retrospective of Anton who finds himself on the pier of the derelict rowing club in 1944. the reader knows what has happened between 1939 and 1944 and the typically Jewish name David strongly suggests that history has not been kind to him. A beautiful book in sensitive prose.
The magic of superlative writing.......2001-09-13
When an author can create a completely absorbing novel, peopled with finely tuned characters that stir us with tension and competition and longing, a novel that uses as its base a sport that few readers know enough about to connect, then that author has displayed credentials of an impressive talent. ON THE WATER spends alomst every page in the preparation, practice and execution of a two man crew boat. He gradually pulls us into that boat with an understanding of the rules of the game and the rigors of the men who row. Then, subtly and with great tenderness he unveils his two young men of polar diferences and weaves a story of the power of sporting competion and the greater power of finding a soulmate. This bonding between lower class gentile Anton and upper class Jew David is engineered by a German Doctor in 1939. This beautiful story of an exploration of place and love is set in the last summer before Hitler destroys Europe. We are left to guess the fate of David while we discover the solitary wandering Anton who tells the story five years later along the banks of the river where they spent the most beautiful time of their lives. This novel gleams with magical poetry and introduces an author (and translator) who seems destined to find an important role in the 21st Century of literature. Read this book!
A Lyric Novel of Athleticism, Wonderful.......2001-08-12
This is a debut novel and a very fine one at that. Hans Maarten van den Brink has written a lyric story of athleticism and the body, of a love of water and rowing, of how a young man grows to be a friend, a teammate, a champion. The author is observant of nature, the body and humanity, he knows the challenge and joy of sports and can communicate that experience as far as it can be done even to the couch potato. He has a sure choice for words and felicitous phrasing (the translator, Paul Vincent, deserves much credit and praise as well). I look forward to reading more of him
A Powerful Physical & Mental Bond!!.......2001-08-01
This was a different type of story that really kept my attention from page one. It takes place in Amsterdam, Holland in 1939 when two young oarsmen train under the guidance of an eccentric German coach in hopes of someday winning the Olympics. Anton, who narrates the story, is from a working class family. David, the other oarsmen in this two man boat with Anton, is an affluent & self-assured athletic young man. The story in beautifully worded images describes the two young men as they become bonded together closer and closer through grueling practice sessions and training to later go on to winning many local races. Anton's description of his obsessive desire to please and do everything perfect for David is almost like a love story and indeed very homoerotic at times. This story is told five years later by Anton as he revisits the now abandoned boathouse. You can tell he is deeply emotional in his remembrances of a time that he describes as "the best summer of his life." You get the feeling this is the most important year of his whole life, too. With World War II now exploding all around him as he remembers, you can feel his tragic lost of youth and happier times.
I felt this was a sensitive and well-written work of literature. There is so much feeling in Brink's writing about this friendship and the time they shared together. I sincerely hope to read more from this Dutch writer in the near future. Highly Recommended!

I have been programming with PHP for 5+ years and loved it. I was ready to delve into the world of web services and SOAP...I had high expectations for this book, but it failed in every aspect. It was poorly organized, poorly written, poorly coded, and poorly explained. It is one of the worst books I have ever bought.

Why so many bad reviews? Many of the authors are mad because the company had went out of business and many of them did not get paid royalty fees. In response, it is no doubt that they would wish the publisher to not profit from their own work - there is no justice in that. The truth is that this book is quite good, but due to the circumstances surrounding the entire thing, there is a lot of negativity in the air. I would suggest that you buy the book on its merits rather than the reviews, which I can only honestly suspect are all written by constituents in one form or another with different agendas.

I think it's a nice book, good job! It introduces wide range about the relationship between PHP and the web services, it's a good base to start. However I have to tell, that there are some bugs (or the descriptions are not clear, don't know) in the example sources, for example I've found one in the chapter about security (Chapter 6).
This is a problem, but with it, I still could recommend this book for everybody not familiar with Web Services, and would like to learn all the related technologies. As it is true at other books, too: you can learn all these things from the web, but you can just find these together in this (or other) book, and you can read it conveniently at your bed with your girlfriend. :)

The content in this book simply rawks - all the latest information on how you can do web services using PHP.There is a wealth on information on how you can use PHP and SOAP (using popular libraries such as NuSOAP, PEAR::SOAP and ezSOAP), PHP and SOAP's front-runner (XML-RPC), how you can discover web services using UDDI. Infact, there is a quality library for PHP::UDDI, that was created for the book, and which the authors have very kindly hosted on sourceforge (phpuddi.sourceforge.net/).
This is *the* book on the subject. Check it out today.

While I know what Web Services are and how they could help me, the code examples in the book are really bad. For one, it feels that some of the code was written by one person and explained by another. Also, the lack of continuity in code style decreases after each chapter (obviously from all the different people that wrote this thing). Some of the introduction chapters were well written, only because they didn't talk about code so much. This book's major failure was the lack of case studies. So Wrox.. with no case studies or quality examples, why should we buy your cheap book?

A Wonderful Read.......2007-07-10
This is one of the most moving books I've read in several years. If you are a teacher this book will lead you to re-evaluate and think about what you are doing and how you treat your students. This was the first book that I've read by Derrick Jensen and I look forward to reading the rest of his books in the near future.
I had to put the book down to say "wow" at least every other page.......2007-04-03
No seriously, this book is phenomenally self-aware, and self-critical, while also making a strong case for totally dismantling institutionalized education. But Jensen doesn't simply condemn a system built to squash the human spirit, he goes far, far beyond that. For every page explaining the horrors of the traditional educational model and his problems working within it, he provides ten pages of real life examples of how he answered the toughest question of all, "what would you do instead?" The fact that he gives us a peek into his fantastic classes is tempered by his constant reminders that there is no one answer. Instead, we all must constantly probe our innermost depths to find our own answers. How will we confront systems of conformity and discover how to be ourselves?

I read this book and throughout I laughed and I cried. No, I am serious. This was one of the most profound and intense and well written books I have read in YEARS.
Derrick Jensen's passion for the subject and the way he conveys his message is too the point and inspirational.
I have read LANGUAGE OLDER THAN WORDS (another excellent book) and I think I was expecting something different from Walking on Water. I didn't really expect it to be really about writing. Yet, while he gives great information about the writing process,he manages to instill an inspirational message about passion, and courage and love and the world around us.
I am impressed with Mr. Jensen overall. I was so inspired by the book that one evening I wrote a letter to him and he had responded by the next day.
I HIGHLY recommend this book and feel it is one of those "required" reading books.

John Stilgoe's "Shallow Water Dictionary" is a fascinating essay on the "lost" landscape of salt marshes and the language needed to describe them. He tracks down the sources of words such as "skiff" and explores the vagueness of definition found in words such as "creek", "brook", and "flotsam and jetsam". His references to historical dictionaries plot the changing importance of these words over time as society's attention wandered elsewhere.
Anyone who spends time in a small boat or who loves the language of the sea will find this book immensely satisfying.
It's about seeing.......2004-12-27
Many who read this will miss the main point. Of course it's about words, but it's more about "seeing" as in "I see." Frost said that he wrote as he wrote so that the wrong people wouldn't get it and be saved. This book has some of that in it. Don't let its almost being a dictionary or the title fool you.
John Stilgoe gives it away on page 54 where he says,"Landscape-or seascape-that lacks vocabulary cannot be seen, cannot be accurately, usefully visited." It's not just a question of vocabulary or even vision. It's all about perception, experience, and finally, reality.
Estuary English is Fascinating.......2004-09-13
What a gem of a book! Who would have know that a topic as esoteric as the 19th century English of eastern American coastal marshes could be so interesting, and that such a small book could deliver so much information? One learns the correct usage of the word "creek", the difference between a "gutter" and a "guzzle", the etymology of "schooner", and a detailed description of the elusive "gundalow". John Stilgoe provides some great comparisons of the unabridged dictionaries of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, as well.
"Shallow Water Dictionary" is written as a narrative, a lament for the loss of words from dictionary English, arrived at while the author pilots his rowboat, "Essay" (A pretty enough boat, then, with lines more gentle than a skiff...), through the saltwater marshes of Massachusetts.
Don't be put off by its small size; lovers of the English language will find this book to be a good reference that is also enjoyable to read.
a treasure of a book.......2003-08-31
This book is one of my absolute favorites books of the past several years - a tiny jewel of a book. While it contains lots of interesting facts for boaters and word-lovers, it is also lyrically poetic (Stilgoe's MOST poetic work, quite unlike his other books), evoking the images, rhythms and sounds of an oft-neglected but major aspect of coastal New England - and makes you really want to see for yourself what it's like to paddle through - the coastal marshlands. For anyone who loves the ocean, secret places, history, nature-lovers, book-lovers, this book will slowly unwind it's magic on you.
For backwater paddlers.......1999-04-17
If you frequent the backwaters solo in shallow draft unmotorized craft, Stilgoe's views play right along with your wanderings. His expansions on physical entities as diverse as the "guzzles" for which you never had a word, to the lesson in full appreciation of "chartreuse" touches here and there, through the care and use of "sea marks" in places and times present and gone are just the kind of thinking you tend to do during a sixteen thousand stroke day in the marshes. New territory in a favorite place.
