Where is the beef?.......2003-07-29
I did get one soundbite that I hope I can use in my life from this book, "Be yourself, unless you're a jerk". However, I got so tired of: be nice, have integrity, be an example, on page after page I was only able to make it through half of the book. All of that is important, but they covered that quite well in kindergarten. If you pick it up to read on the plane bring a backup book; you will need it.
No startling revelations.......2002-11-13
This book is dull and does not unravel anything that the average person who can rise to the top cannot derive on its own - if you are just graduating from college, this may seem appropriate, if you've been around in the business world - seek other material. One reading suggestion, which is light and very simple, but a good reminder of what's required is the book by Lencioni: " The 5 temptations of a CEO" - worth an hour while waiting at the airport between flights.
Management Theory Lite.......2002-06-28
The book presents itself as a semi-scholarly work, synthesizing interviews with 100 CEOs into a meaninful set of commandats for those that want to act like the big boss. On an academic level, this is fraught with peril - How do we know these are the right CEOs, and do they really articulate what makes them succeed?
Business books have a history of weak scholarship (think In Search of Excellence) but still can contain great ideas.
The 10 less than profound results:
1 - Be Yourself, Unless You're a Jerk
2 - See Around Corners
3 - Make Dust or Eat Dust
4 - Make the Big Play
5 - Keep Good Company
6 - Be the Number One Fund Raiser and Protecter
7 - Act Like a CEO When You Don't Feel Like It
8 - Evangelize the World
9 - Go Big or Go Home
10 - Cut Through the Junk
All this is good advice, but did you need to ask 100 CEOs to come up with it?
Ultimately, the book resides in my restroom. It's good for a couple minutes a day of reminding me what I should be doing, but nothing that requires hours of in depth study. It's a light read, but not really the blueprint to the executive suite.

"How to Act Like a CEO" captures the strategic business savvy of Corporate stars! Like everything else written by D.A Benton, this book provides us with insight into the minds of industry leaders. I have yet to read a book by any other author that even remotely compares to this treasured information. Bravo, Ms. Benton...you have done it again!

Customer Reviews:
Very positive and encouraging!.......2007-06-07
I found this book very positive and encouraging! After I read this book, I was very pleased to see that there is somebody out there who realizes that people with Asperger's Syndrome are capable of learning the skills they need to become successful members of society, if they are given all the help that they need. I wish that there were a lot more people who realized this! I hope that there will be in the not-too-distant future!
Useful, but for a limited audience.......2006-11-07
This book is addressed to the person working on finding work for someone with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), assuming that is someone different than the person with AS (Aspie). Hawkins has a relatively modest definition for "work that works." She just means "a job that someone can get and keep," which would be a very nice thing indeed for a lot of Aspies. This book doesn't really address the subjects of work as mission and vocation, finding work where one's deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.
What's good about this book? It addresses some issues that might predicably arise within the family of the Aspie. It talks about how a "job coach" could be use to help an Aspie at a job. It gives some good nuts-and-bolts advice on how a consultant might assess an Aspie for jobs they could do successfully. It gives some tools to help an Aspie negotiate their predictable difficulties. It gives some tips on conducting an interview.
What's not so good about this book? It gives the impression that it would be a good book for the Aspie, as opposed to being addressed to the consultant. I propose the title should be something like "Putting People with Asperger's Syndrome to Work (And Keeping Them There)" An Aspie would look at the cover and wonder "Why are those two women holding that man down? And why doesn't the woman on the right have her shirt tucked in, if they go on and on about Aspies dressing like slobs?" The book could say more about leveraging the obsessive-compulsive aspect of AS in preparing for an interview, acquiring knowledge about the employer, etc.
There is a issue brewing as to whether AS should be considered a disability under the terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This book doesn't address that, but I'm not expecting it to. However, the next book on this subject should.
Knowledge of AS is growing significantly, so to call anything about AS "ultimate" isn't accurate. All the material in this book is valid, and the only reason I don't give it five stars have to do with the comments above.
How to Find Work That Works..........2006-02-24
This valuable resource provides direct service approaches for job development and placement supports. It will be useful for staff training and self-empowerment for those with high functioning autism.
Does it work?.......2006-01-29
The author of this book is a vocational consultant and the founder of an employment agency for people with Asperger syndrome, so it does contain lots of practical advice and useful information. It is intended, not for people on the spectrum themselves, but for those who are helping people on the spectrum to find work, such as other employment advisers, teachers, parents, friends etc. However, it does contain things which you still might find useful if trying to find work for yourself, even though you might find it just a little patronising. This book is not about finding a career, it is about simply getting a job. It's strategy for getting people with Asperger syndrome into work is helping them to be what employers want, and it explains what that is clearly and well.
Exactly the right book!.......2005-05-15
I found this book to be extremely practical and very useful in guiding me through the work finding process for my 21 year old son. It gave realistic strategies that actually worked. My son now has a job! If you want to help your kid or anyone else with ASD find a job, get this book!!

enlightening.......2003-08-19
This novel was lovely. It is a spiritual journey with strong characters and deep story content. I am yearning for the two books that are supposed to follow it. (That's what I am here looking for) It seems they are not yet published! It is nice to read a story without the "preachy-ness" that some of the spiritual books seem to do.
READ IT!
a great book.......2002-07-09
A Great Book! You can have something from it much more than you wonder.
Loved It!!!.......2001-12-29
Getting There was a great book! I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in reading about Spirituality or Enlightenment. The book chronicles the spritual transformation of Adam, a despondent, crabby, and depressed eco-farmer in Australia. Through the help of your extraordinary teacher, Selph, Adam learns how to change his life and finally become a happier individual. The book is great because it's funny, has a great plot, and a couple of great lessons. I think by the time anyone finishes this book, you will come to love Adam, Amber and especially Selph!!!
A Journey of Courage.......2001-04-15
This story was simply wonderful - ! Many times have I read one truly great book from an author, went back for more, and found the rest sadly lacking ... not so with Michael Roads' books! Every single one of them is a treasure to read and re-read, refreshing in their poetic simplicity and deeply touching.
In this particular novel, prepare to hang on for an enriching and very intense ride that takes you from the very pits of despair to immense joy and anywhere in between. It is a very human journey, a journey of growing courage, love, and joy. Too many of us think we're on this journey alone, without help or anyone to understand what we go through - well, think again! If you're on this journey of self-discovery, this story will definitely in-spire; and even if you're not yet sure if you are, this book is too good a read to pass up! Sit back and enjoy - and have FUN!
A soulful read.......2000-11-11
I like reading books that move me spiritually. Books that put me in a realm of peace. Books that cause thought yet open up other parts of self. This book was well written and a grand adventure of a man's quest to find himself with in himself through his selph. I am giving it away to all my friends who will take the adventure.
Book Description
It is clinical work with the most difficult patients—those with severe narcissistic, sadomasochistic, and borderline disorders—that poses the greatest challenge to the therapist's guiding assumptions about clinical process; indeed, such work often leads therapists to question beliefs and expectations that formerly seemed self-evident. In Getting From Here to There: Analytic Love, Analytic Process, Sheldon Bach elaborates the holistic vision that guides him in work with just such patients. He dwells especially on the "attentive presence" through which the analyst effects a "meeting" with patients that invites the latter's trust in the analyst and in the therapeutic process. And he writes of love—of patient for analyst and of analyst for patient—that grows out of this mutual trust and sustains therapeutic process.
For Bach, analytic therapy aims at understanding the person as a mind-body unity that manifests particular states of consciousness. This holistic vision of treatment sustains a flexible clinical orientation that enables the analyst to "meet" states of consciousness in order to bring them into a system of which the analyst forms a part. Bach thoughtfully explores the clinical issues that enter into this taxing process, among them the establishment and maintenence of basic trust; the patient's or the therapist's presence in the other's mind; and the shifts in agency between patient and therapist. And he describes at length the frequently exhausting, even demoralizing, transference-countertransference struggles that enter into this type of analytic work.
Throughout, Bach is guided by the conviction that work with extremely challenging patients promotes the psychological growth and increased self-knowledge of patient and analyst alike. And he is admirably clear that the "mutual living through" of such treatments nurtures a kind of love between patient and analyst. Getting From Here to There not only records the clinical lessons learned by an unusually gifted analyst; it also chronicles the movement of psychoanalysis itself from the dissection of love into component parts to a synthetic grasp of its vital role in psychoanalytically informed treatment.

Don't Leave Home Without It!.......2003-02-03
Picture this... you've been drifting around in the songwriting sea for years, unsure of where to go next. There doesn't seem to be any clear direction to take. That elusive first cut is somewhere out over the horizon, and you're not sure where. Sound familiar? It was to me until I picked up a copy of this book. In it is a wealth of information, good advice, and a practical guide to the songwriting world. You won't learn how to write a song by reading this book, but you'll finally have the answers to what to do once the songs are written. It's all so clear now. I'm not there yet, but I've got a map, and I'm headed for the horizon. Don't leave home without it!
A Great "How To" for Songwriters.......2003-02-01
This is a great book for the aspiring songwriter. Songwriting is such a creative process that the basic step by step of getting better, getting songs heard, meeting publishers, and ultimately having a song on the radio is often lost.
This book lays out for the writer in clear and concise steps what needs to be done to get a song on the radio. Not only is the process presented step by step, but also as a pyramid. Completing steps high up on the pyramid can be self defeating if you don't have the foundation laid from earlier steps.
The book is clear, concise, and inspring. Each chapter (or step) includes stories from writers who have "made it" already.
The book is designed to be "loved". . . that is, by the time you complete the last step (have a song on the radio!) it ought to be dog eared, written in, re-written in, and pretty much beat to hell.
If you are serious about becoming a hit songwriter, you need this book.
An Absolute Must for Serious Songwriters.......2003-01-31
I made the move to Nashville in November of 1996, not knowing a soul in town. I spent an entire year without a clue or connection. Sadly, it was another 5 years of taking baby steps before I found " Your First Cut ". This fabulous book is a how to for the serious music composer. It focuses on the all elusive goal of getting your songs heard and recorded by music artists. Jerry and Gracie provide the ground work for making that pipedream into a reality. Whether you're a neophite tunesmith, or a solid writer with an impressive catalog of wannabe hits, this book will help you reach your goal of getting your first cut. The chapters walk you through the process of crafting, networking, and self evaluation with complete detail each step of the way. Taken from the perspective of two people that have "walked the walk". I truly believe that by using this book, i'm closer today of realizing my dream of having my first cut. Do yourself a favor, add this wonderful book to your collection! Take it from me, you can wander aimlessly in circles without a true gameplan, or you can own this book, use it as a tool, and be on your way to getting "Your First Cut".
Want to get your songs cut? Here's how........2003-01-30
"Your First Cut" is the most helpful and educational book about how to succeed as a songwriter that I have seen. It does not teach one how to write a song. There are many other places to learn that. But whether you are just beginning or have been writing for many years and don't know how to get your songs before the ears of those who can get them recorded, this book is a godsend. It lays out in very clear step-by-step fashion what it takes to become successful as a professional songwriter. Starting at the most basic level ("Do you play an instrument or sing?") Jerry and Gracie take the reader on a journey leading to having one's songs recorded by a major label artist. The steps are laid out in pyramid fashion, with the early chapters forming the foundation on which the succeeding chapters are built. Stressing a continual process of improvement, both of one's own writing skills and of one's relationship network, "Your First Cut" is like a manual explaining just how successful songwriters "get it done" in the publishing and recording business. The book is also filled with inspirational anecdotes from hit songwriters and suggestions for helping one establish and stay focused on one's goals. Make no mistake; there is nothing in here that says it's going to be easy--success in this field takes an enormous amount of hard work, resilience and persistence and sometimes just a little bit of luck, too. But while no book can "guarantee" a successful music career, (certainly that takes talent and effort on the part of the reader) it is safe to say that if one is NOT following the steps outlined in this book, one will most likely NOT be successful. This is the way the pros do it, folks. "Your First Cut" is probably worth at least a few years of hanging around Nashville, New York or L. A.
A Must Have Book!.......2003-01-30
A spectacular book written by spectacular people! "Your First Cut" is a must have for anyone considering the "business" of becoming a marketable songwriter. It is designed to "empower" the reader and guide them through all necessary steps of the songwriting career. Step by step, day by day, "Your First Cut" will provide you with the tools that will MOVE you closer to getting your first cut!!!
Customer Reviews:
Poorly written book.......2007-03-15
I've read many books on real estate investing and foreclosures. This is the worst of them all. There are typos throughout the book, thoughts are incomplete, some topics are glossed over and rushed, some chapters are as short as two pages, and the author constantly plugs his other books in between chapters. I can't help but feel that this book was slapped together. Do yourself a favor and look for another book to buy.
Now this is more like it!.......2007-02-19
I just bought this and the new edition of Wades "Real Estate Money Machine" Having read and checked out tons of other books, I now know that this is what I really need.
Most real estate books teach the same boring "buy & hold" strategy thatis not working for stock market investors. Wade teaches you how to make cash now, not 20 years from now. He shows you how to buy below market prices (yes---even today) and then shows you how to create Streams of Income.
A lot of foreclosure books tell you only how to buy foreclosures at the auction. In "How To pick Up Foreclosures" , Wade shows ou multiple ways to buy foreclosures and even has an entire chapter on pre-foreclosures and how to contact the homeowner before the foreclosure process begins.
Although not a big book, "How To Pickup Foreclosures" is packed with useful, powerful information that really works. I also recommend Real Estate Money Machine, Real Estate For Real People and 101 Ways to Buy Real Estate Without Cash. These are also by Wade Cook.
I love the 2006 edition! Must reading for all R.E. Investors.......2007-02-13
The timing of this book is right. Houses are way overpriced and the housing industry is now in a SELL position. Homeowners are panicking and many are losing their homes.
QUESTION:
Are you a welcome hand? Would you like to help homeowners save their credit while getting homes at rock bottom discounts? Would you like to learn how to buy foreclosures before the auction and before anyone else knows about them? Now you can!
In this 150 page book Wade Cook shows you how to get Super Discounted Real Estate before the auction. As stated above, the time is right. Bargains are everywhere. The formulas, methods and strategies for investing and trading in todays real estate market are in this excellent book, upadated for the times.
In How To Pick Up Foreclosures you will learn:
$ Using the time line to your benefit
$ Get there first--Capture the Deal
$ An Investors Dream
$ Leverage At Bargain Prices
$ Step-by-Step Processes that really work
$ Techniques that work in todays market
$ How To Evaluate Properties
$ Pitfalls to avoid
In How To Pick Up Foreclosures, Wade Cook, America's premier rags to riches educator takes you through every step of purchasing foreclosures. He tells you what has worked for him and explains how you can create your own real estate cash flow system.
This book is over 150 pages, 12 chapters with new information on preforeclosures. 2 additional chapters and an appendix.
Regarding the one star review we who posted three separate times just ahead of my review, I can only assume he has never read the new book or perhaps only skimmed over the free stuff here at Amazon and probably never really bought the book. Too bad. His loss!
I also recommend Real Estate Money Machine & Stock Market Money Machine by Wade Cook and Making Money in Real Estate by Dolf De Ross and Diane Kennedy.
Advice from a guy with multiple bankruptcies.......2006-03-13
On 10/5/00, Bloomberg News accounts said Wade Cook Financial Corp. would offer refunds to thousands of investors who attended Wade Cook stock-market seminars. This was to settle action brought against Wade Cook FC by the Federal Trade Commission. Cook was also sued by the attorneys general of the states of AL, AZ, CA, ID, IL, KS, MO, NC, NM, OK, OR, PA, TX, and WA.
Don't Waste Your Hard-Earned Dollars.......2006-01-22
This book was a huge disappointment. The writer's intent is not to educate the reader on how to pick up foreclosures. Rather, the purpose of the book is to get you to buy Cook's other products. Each chapter ends with a plug for another book, a seminar or an audio/video cassette set.
A semi-educated Google user can find just as much (if not more) information on foreclosures. It's too bad that Amazon doesn't have a zero-star rating

Customer Reviews:
Good PM book for creative types.......2001-01-06
Allinson covers the bases on project management from the perspective of the creative side of the brain. This isn't a "create a WBS following these rules and get an M&M" style book. You will have to think to use the information but it is well worth while. If you are a creative type working in a project managed environment, this is a very good book. The references and his descriptions are very useful.

I really enjoyed this audiobook, particularly the first story. It had me laughing out loud! There is a good variety here, I would say something for everyone. of the 6 stories, only 1 did I think was so-so, the other 5 were great! Overall, a great audiobook for the car on a long trip.

Dr. Gregg Huszczo provides a great road map for team development. He has laid out practical exercises for Steering teams to follow through out the journey to teams- from assessing the need for team development, getting ready for teams, and implementing, evaluating and nurturing team success.

I hope to write back one year from now and document how this hands-on guide helped in our process of team development. There are so many unknowns and directions teams can take- "Tools for Team Excellence" provides a roadmap.
Good luck in changing the culture of your organization and team development process.
