With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow," "mind like water," and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance.
Not quite. Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-do's clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists--all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organized, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru," suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech saber known as the cell phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.)
As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket"
That's where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know are more organized than most CEOs to start with). --Timothy Murphy

get SAVED now with simple, direct organizing techniques.......2007-10-15
Read GTD one time through. Hard to put down. Read it again to outline and make the knowledge my own. I'm like a born-again GTD evangelist. Like a true holy-roller I started doing as much as I could, as fast as I could because I have seen the light!
Projects that have been languishing on the back burner are now active and moving forward. Multiple stacks of piled paper are now neatly organized in a new lateral file cabinet. I didn't really have an inbox. Now I not only have an inbox, I'm spouting profound truths like, "there is no vision without an inbox."
Using my pda is no longer painful. I know right where my planning notes are. I can make notes that transform into clear thinking, then projects, then actions by context.
Save yourself, brother. GTD. This is the way.
Some Good Advice!.......2007-10-12
Allen's approach to managing yourself and your world is very good advice on how to be more productive and satisfied. This book is filled with practical, hands-on ideas, tips, tools, and techniques for more effective self-management. Many of us feel overwhelmed and out of control in today's fast-paced world. This book and the book Understanding: Train of Thought are great ways to get a handle on all that "stuff" in our lives and figure out how to better manage the flow of information that never seems to stop. Five stars all the way!
If you are not already naturally organized, then his process would be excruciating torture to you........2007-10-10
#1 if you are not already naturally organized, then I can only expect you will toss this book in the rubbish bin because his process would be excruciating torture to you. It is an in-depth, deep clean.
If you are already naturally organized and yet feel you are not truly maximizing the effort you are putting into it, then this is well worth the time to read.
I easily related to this book and took away a few productive processes. It is over all a helpful book on organizing beyond the ubiquitous to do list. He has clear steps to get stalled projects moving forward. Hammering the point that the frustrations you face in getting things done are in actuality your lack of dealing with the hard question of what is the next physical action I need to take with this to deal with it. That may very well be toss it in the rubbish or Make a phone call...
Unfortunately, more often than not his example of the next action step is make a call... I started to cringe half way through the book whenever he wrote "Finally, when it's time to actually do an action, LIKE MAKING A CALL..." Towards the end of the book I was saying out loud and laughing "What is our next action step... Oh, of course make a call!"
That one criticism aside, I am trying his tickler file concept and do find it useful. I have implemented his mind sweep to organizing myself before the week so as to be prepared to face all of the inevitable interruptions and schedule changes with ease while accomplishing my weekly objectives. Although, in my case frequently the next action step is "turn off the phone, IM and email" so that I can work.
It's That Next Step that Matters..........2007-10-09
David Allen's concise and useful guide is built largely on the idea that, while people "think" in terms of entire projects, human action can only be practically applied to one aspect of a project at any one time.
In order to be effective, and work intelligently,we must first diligently construct our catalog of things that "need" doing and then proceed to priortize them in terms of their relative importance. This is only list making, however the act of breaking each project down, in order of importance, into discrete action steps is a more complex intellectual process, and is where we often fail. It is not a complex concept, but even the very intelligent lose sight of it under the pressures of life and work.
I found it interesting that many of the key points emphasized by Allen were articulated by Earl Nightingale, a famous radio commentator, decades ago. They are no less true today. The difficulty is forming and maintaining the habit structure that enables us to be masters of work, rather than slaves to unfinished business.

If you have deadlines, you need this book.......2007-10-03
I have an associate who can't meet deadlines. I give him a deadline and set it two weeks before the project is needed. Doesn't matter. He won't make it. So I bought him this book. "No more projects until you read this," I told him.
He read it. He's not missed a project deadline yet.
People who have their own businesses, generally have deadlines and projects. Things have to be done by a certain time. If nothing else, we have to have our income tax in by midnight April 15 in the U.S.
But many people put things off and that creates stress. Stress for the person who procrastinates and stress for those who depend on him or her. We all need a time management system.
This book will help you to clear out your clutter. It will help you to know how to handle a project, to break it up and work at it in a way that's effective for you.
Highly recommended.

Planet Earth: As You've Never Seen It Before.......2007-08-10
I have not had a chance to even break the seal on this new book as yet. I skimmed this book at a bookstore, and then decided to buy it. If you saw the mini-series on Discovery or Animal Planet, you will be impressed with this book as well. For those with children, this book is a must.
A Great Coffee Table Book.......2007-08-04
A great companion book to the dvd series.
magnificent.......2007-07-30
Amazing photos and wonderous facts regarding everything imaginable to the unusual. Our family has enjoyed this educational and spellbinding photography.
Glorious.......2007-07-27
Beautifully photographed and informational, this book should be on every nature lover's shelf. The "Planet Earth" series, which I watch weekly on Animal Planet, is even more jaw-dropping. I thank the generous and unbelievably courageous people who have the cojones to make this possible!

Book Description
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban's backyard
Anyone who despairs of the individual's power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan's treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schoolsespecially for girlsthat offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson's quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.

Three Cups of Tea.......2007-10-19
The book was very timely & well written. I was a pleasure to read about the good that was done for the children.
Couldn't put it down.......2007-10-18
This amazing story will capture your heart and keep you glued to your chair turing page after page. Hats off to Dr. Greg and all who help allieviate the worlds problems one person at a time.
Great Book.......2007-10-18
This is a great novel, I also recommend "Detained Differences" by J. Robert Rowe. That is also a great Afghanistan novel as well.
Three Cups of Tea.......2007-10-17
It was a book required to read in an English class. The book has a good message.
Admire the Commitment and Accomplishments, but..........2007-10-15
What Mortensen accomplished with commitment and perseverance is undoubtly a great humanitarin effort. However, the book is irritating to read. Mortensen's name is used so many times over and over it is distracting. "Mortensen this" and "Mortensen that"! It reads like Mortiensen is a demi-god and it really presents like this when you realize he is a coauthor. Why not write this inspiring story in "first person"?
The humanitarian effort is inspiring if you can get through the book!

A Terrible Book.......2007-10-05
As a long-standing fan it pains me to write a negative review for Mr. Baldacci's latest novel, but it seems as if he phoned this one into his publisher. Flat characters, over-plotted, silly dialogue...and those are the book's good points. Don't waste your time or money.
Poor writing,characters and storyline=bad book.......2007-09-24
A member of our book group chose this book for us. We had read Camel Club and found the characters amusing and the story OK, but Simple Genius is embarrassingly boring. The characters lack any depth, the storyline is ridiculous and not even marginally believable;and the dialogue could have been written by a first grader. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this one.
Baldacci comes through again.......2007-09-17
Briefly, an enjoyable "page-turner." It was hard to put down, both for the action and for the 3-dimensional main characters. Not a criticism, but the author in his credits should have given a nod to Clive Cussler.
Thanks, David. I'm awaiting your next one.
Another good one............2007-09-15
I will never forgive Baldacci !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He got us started with these audio cd's with The Winner back in 1997- 98 ?
and found the perfect match for our love of driving trips !
As soon as he comes out with one, we get it... and have been enthralled every time !!!
I highly recommend Simple Genius!
Simple Genius is Simply Great.......2007-09-13
Simple Genius, like all of David Baldacci's novels, is "simply great". This novel mixes suspence, a spy thriller, and detective mystery all into one speel-binding "edge of your chair" masterpiece. I couldn't stop listening to the un-abridged audio CD set. Great audio book. Recommended to all that enjoy this type of novel or this author.

ASW's Introduction to Management Science: A Quantitative Approach to Decision Making provides thorough, application-oriented coverage in a very readable writing style. This is the leading text on the market. Simply put, it's a classic! The problem-scenario approach introduces quantitative procedures through situations that include both problem formulation and technique application. The extensive linear programming coverage includes problem formulation, computer solution, and practical application. The text covers transportation, assignment, and the integer programming extension of linear programming, as well as advanced topics like waiting line models, simulation, and decision analysis. A large selection of problems includes self-test problems with complete solutions and case problems. Excel spreadsheet appendices are included as well.
Customer Reviews:
Good program with textbook.......2007-08-22
I had to use this text for a sophmore level management science course. While the book is extensively detailed, it is written for graduate school level course work. The program that comes with the text is much more useful for the undergrad student tackling business statistics.
Graduate Students Guide.......2006-03-10
This book is an essential guide for every graduate student. It makes mathematical and technical concepts of management science understandable and useful.
Good college textbook.......2006-02-25
This book provides thorough explanations, good tables, graphs, examples and self-test questions with most of the answers in the back of the book.
katz.......2005-04-19
Trust Me. This is the only book that you'll need to get started started in this area. The authors have done an excellent job in producing such a work, that takes care to explain all the details of management science.
I used this text for my professional exams (CIMA) and the it was great. All the chapters in this book are cleanly written to take that I doesn't leave anything unexplained. However, the following chapters are the ones that I like the most in this book:
1. Introduction to LP
2. LP: Sensitivity Analysis: Amazing work here.
3. LP Applications: formulation of problems in this chapter may be bit difficult at first, but keep reading and you'll learn and appreciate the work that the authors have put in.
4. LP - Simplex Method: My favorite chapter. Is highly readable. This one chapter alone is worth the book.
5. LP - Simplex Sensitivity.
6. Integer LP
7. Project Scheduling - Great, well written chapter, another favorite of mine.
8. Decision Analysis - Good but the problems are repetative.
9. Markov Process - An introduction only, but the application of markov process to accounts receivable anlaysis is very useful for anyone wondering about the applications of markov processes.
Overall a great book that is worth its price.

The PowerScore LSAT Logic Games Bible is the most comprehensive book available for the Logic Games section of the LSAT. The intent of this book is to provide you with an advanced system for attacking any game you encounter on the LSAT. This same system is covered in the live classes taught by PowerScore, and all of the methods and techniques discussed in the book have been tested in classroom situations over many years.
The book features and explains a detailed methodology for attacking the games section. All aspects of Logic Games are covered, from recognizing game types to diagramming rules to making inferences and answering questions. Entire chapters are devoted to the most advanced game techniques and to time management strategies.
Logic Games are divided into individual types, and a discussion follows that teaches you how to approach each type of Game, and drills are presented to help you apply and understand the techniques. Thereafter, real LSAT logic games are used to illustrate how the techniques apply to real tests. Using real LSAT questions is a must for high-level LSAT preparation, and twenty-one real LSAT logic games are contained in the book. Each logic game is accompanied by a detailed analysis of the game setup and related questions.

Customer Reviews:
A MUST HAVE.......2007-10-05
I wish I would have purchased this book months ago! In contrast to other LSAT prep books, this one explains the Logic Games in a much more clear, concise, and easy to understand way. If you decide to use another LSAT prep book, I highly reccomend using this one to prepare your self for the Logic Games part, and skipping that part in your other LSAT prep, as this one is the best. I just took the LSAT on 9/29/07, and everything that was covered in the book, I utilized on the test!
Useful, despite being overpriced and a bit odd.......2007-09-30
The Logic Games Bible teaches techniques for diagramming games and, to a lesser extent, attacking the questions. The most useful things I picked up from the book were:
1) Never erase your work (do one master diagram at the bottom of each page and then, if necessary, do mini-diagrams the questions).
2) Diagramming numerical distributions.
3) "Hurdling the uncertainty, TM," which is an effective method of diagramming inclusion/exclusion rules when presented with rules like "A, B, and C can not all be selected at the same time."
4) Diagramming abstract sequences
It's worth noting that along the way, the book utilizes some strange conventions. For example, when diagraming a sequence where A comes before B (that is, it's in a lower numbered position) the book suggests that the following shorthand be used: A>B, that is A is greater than B. If you've taken a math class in the last decade, this is disconcerting--in practice I diagrammed all of the abstract sequences exactly opposite of the book. Also, when diagramming morning and afternoon games, the book suggested that the diagram look like this:
afternoon.|_ _ _ _ _
morning....|_ _ _ _ _
A strange reversal of morning and afternoon that is, again, off-putting to anyone who has used outlook, or even a regular calendar. These are minor quibbles, but to some extent, they make the book seem a little amateurish and undermine the reader's confidence in it.
All said, this book can be very useful if used correctly. Its well worth purchasing if you're aiming for the 170s, still have a month or two left to study, and have not taken many practice exams (I say this because there aren't that many old logic sections to go through, and it takes a decent number of practice sections to learn how to efficiently apply the techniques taught in the book). If, however, you're planning on skipping a game on the test, expect to score
<170, only have a couple of weeks before the exam, or have chugged through most of the practice exams, this will be an expensive book of little use.
Great Buying Experience.......2007-09-26
I have been looking at all the bookstores in the Atlanta area for this book. I needed it to study for my upcoming LSAT. The book was out of stock everywhere in Georgia. I simply went online to Amazon and the book arrived at my doorstep within 3 days-and it was cheaper than the bookstores! This book is an excellent tool if you are unsure about the logic games portion of the LSAT. I would recommend it to anyone, even if they feel pretty confident on logic games.
The BEST LSAT book available.......2007-09-09
I used this book as a supplement to the PowerScore classroom course, and I found the book more helpful than the actual course! When I began to work through the book my score was a 168, but I now score consistently in the 173-174 range. As I practice, I get even faster...the techniques really are superb. Just leave yourself enough time (2-3 weeks) to work through the book without rushing so that you can absorb each concept, and then leave at least 3 weeks to do your own practice, honing the techniques on actual LSATs. I've been working just the games section from one test each day, and then an entire test every 4th day.
Unless you think the games are easy, this is the most important LSAT prep book you can buy.
Worth Every Penny!!!.......2007-09-03
Before purchasing this book, I purchased both Kaplan and Princeton Review prep books and still SUCKED at the analytical reasoning/logic games section of the LSAT. I spent two weeks with this book and was able to complete every logic game accurately. I'm still working on the timing but at least I'm able to diagram the games and arrive at the correct answers, which is something I struggled with before. If you have difficulty w/ the logic games - this is the book for you!!!

Customer Reviews:
Dynamite.......2007-09-24
They say dynamite comes in small packages. This little book is jammmed full of helpful hints for any business. The applications are very real and necessary still today in order take care of our most important assets, our employees. And at the same time continue to grow ourselves as better leaders. I highly recommend this book.
Must buy.......2007-08-17
Easy to read and really pulls things together. I enjoyed this book so much I've ordered 4 more of Cottrell's management/leadership books.
Excellent mentoring.......2007-08-10
Monday Morning Leadership is short and easy to read. Actually you can read it in one sitting. However, that does not lesson the value. Because the lessons are presented in such condensed fashion, they stand out. The lessons do not get lost in excess verbage.
There are excellent tips on the value of having the right employees and the high cost of having the wrong employees. Tony, the mentor, give sage advise about time management, taking responsibility and the need for managers to be aware of the needs of the employees.
Some of the better tips are: Everything you (as a manager) do matters.
People quit people before they quit companies.
...the primary reasons most executives fail are arrogance, out-of-control egos, and insensitivity.
The book finishes by stressing the importance of continual learning. Tony suggest reading 10 minutes per day. Personally I think you need to spend at least an hour per day on self-improvement with at least 30 minutes devoted to reading.
An excellent book, it can and should be read and referred to often.
Good Content; Poor Presentation.......2007-08-01
This book was required reading for a leadership class I took. It has a number of good pearls, and I am glad I read it. However, the presentation is horrible. It is written as if it is the transcription of two people having a series of conversations over coffee. The dialog between the two people seems contrived and repetitive, even belittling at times. In the end, I could have gotten just as much out of the book if it had been condensed to a two-page list of bulleted items.
Monday Morning Leadership: 8 Mentoring Sessions You Can't Afford to Miss.......2007-07-30
Excellent book. Quck and easy to read; very insightful. I have recommended it to others.
Book Description
The success of this best-selling text lies in the author's belief that a good text talks with, rather than at, its readers. Shaffer does an extraordinary job of anticipating students' interests, questions, and concerns while treating them as active participants in the process of learning about social and personality development. The Fifth edition of SOCIAL AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT features clearly written, current coverage of social and personality development that aids students in discovering the causes, processes, and complexities that underlie developmental change. Students learn why biological and environmental factors, contextual factors such as cross-cultural, familial, neighborhood, school, and peer-group influences cause change in children. Shaffer also explores the approaches that researchers use to test their theories and answer important questions about developing children and adolescents. This book's effective coverage of field research stands out from other texts not only for its accuracy and currency, but because Shaffer consistently juxtaposes classic research with the latest breakthroughs in a way that helps students appreciate how knowledge builds on earlier findings. This edition features a much stronger emphasis on cultural influences on development.
Customer Reviews:
guided by Bronfenbrenner.......2006-05-30
As an instructor, I found this to be an excellent text. In particular, I appreciated the repeated incorporation of cross-cultural research. This text answers the call for incorporating diversity across the curriculum. Repeated inclusion of cross-cultural similarities and differences, combined with repeated discussions of the interconnections of multiple variables, helps students move away from a "one-size fits all" approach and egocentric thinking. By the end of the semester, when students were presented with a hypothetical problem scenario to resolve, they quickly outlined a list of additional details they would need to know, offering how each variable (parenting style, ethnicity, location of residence, violence within family, etc.) would alter the "goodness of fit" of their intervention. Also, the author does not shy away from presenting research evidence that is sometimes contradictory or inconclusive, which provides an excellent opportunity for in-class discussions of the reality of research and how, as a field, we address these issues. The only drawback is the amount of information sometimes overwhelmed students, so I found it necessary to focus their reading on certain sections of each chapter - however this can also be viewed as strength, since it allowed me to "customize" my course to some extent.
Social and Personality Development.......2005-09-22
This was a brand new book and I was pleased with the book however it took longer than expected to receive.
Book Description
This second edition of Microeconomics is filled with learning-by-doing problems that give students a chance to make economics their own. These fully worked-out problems provide a step-by-step road map to help students solve numerical problems. Each problem correlates to similar practice problems at the end of each chapter. In addition, the authors include many extensive real-world examples in the text. These examples are contemporary applications of the theory and are longer and more extensive to show the evolution of the example. Each chapter opens with an example to draw readers into the topic.

Industry related, application oriented, no calculus required.......2007-06-22
I use this book to teach Intermediate Micro (although I can only cover the first 13 chapters in the book). The book is very decent (not perfect, but better than the others that I examined - actually, depends on the type of students, but if you are not in a community college or in a research school, this book is the closest to what it should be). Rigorous, clear, lots of industry related applications (not so for MBA students, though). I found that the Applications in the book are much better understood (and therefore useful) if you write questions about how the Applications are related to the theory. You also have to select which problems at the end of chapters your students should answer, since some of them are too theoretical or irrelevant.

Sound Advice, Easy to Follow.......2007-10-19
The Abs Diet offers logical, scientifically supported advice on eating properly. The plan is easy to follow -- I especially appreciated the fact that there is not an "induction phase," just principles to follow over the long-term. My husband and I have been eating this way for about 2 months now. We have found the diet simple to follow, even when eating out, and that our small children enjoy eating this way, too. That's a big bonus. We've experienced an increase in our overall health. The small digest, Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time, is a great resource when eating out. Overall an excellent guide to a healthy lifestyle.
Slow going.......2007-10-18
I just started my fourth week and have only lost about 1 lb per week. I've stuck to the diet, replacing my breakfast and lunch with the "oatmeal shake" and I've been walking 3 miles every day. The weight is coming off...just not as fast as I'd like. The thing I liked least about this was ordering from Amazon and expecting the book to arrive within 3 to 5 days as advertised. Three weeks seemed a bit excessive. Aside from that however, the things you can eat are easy enough to live with.
ABSolutely worth a look........2007-10-12
This book reminds me a lot of "Body For Life." It has a very workable plan to lose weight and the diet and exercise strategies are clearly laid out and explained in sufficient detail. Readers will find plenty of pictures too of the exercises that they are instructed to do. Motivational in nature, it's laid back writing style should appeal to many. Readers who like this book might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator to help keep up their motivation to diet. Good luck!
Abs Diet is an easy lifestyle.......2007-09-20
This is an easy to follow, straightforward eating and exercising lifestyle. It is not a diet, but a smart way to eat to maintain a healthy weight and great for your overall well-being. I had followed the same guidelines as outlined in Men's Health magazine and lost over 100lbs.to bring me to a normal weight and 6% body fat.
Good Insight.......2007-09-18
I like the fact that the authors explain how things work in our bodies (how protein intake relates to the increased metabolism resulting from the workout, and to the muscle growth; which foods are good for metabolism; which of them aid in weight loss or lowering cholesterol levels). Although the idea of having six meals a day does not always fit my busy schedule, the one of snacking with fruits and/or nuts between main meals does seem to be effective in my case. What I like most about the book is the well balance diet that does not exclude any food groups. I am a great believer in the nourishment based on natural foods and The Abs Diet fully supports this belief. Dr. Tombak in the book "Can We Live 150 Year" farther explains proper food combination and its effect on our bodies. For that reason his book is a very good addition to The Abs Diet.
