Book Description

Gemstones of the World is truly the single volume that every hobbyist, jeweler, jewelry maker, and rockhound needs: it’s the cornerstone of the field. And this updated edition contains a host of new findings on “Gemstones for Collectors,” additional gems in the “Table of Constants,” and the “double fraction” figures that experts have long wanted—a very special new feature.

All the gemstones are treated in their many variations: more than 1,500 full-color photos showcase each precious and semiprecious stone in both its rough, natural, and its polished and cut renditions. Each entry offers complete information on the gemstone’s formation, structure, physical properties, and characteristics, along with the best methods of working, cutting, and polishing it. There are even full treatments of lesser-known gems, from andalusite to vesuvian, and a special section is devoted to rocks as precious stones, including alabaster, onyx, obsidian, and fossils. Organic gem materials are also covered, such as coral, ivory, amber, and pearl. Charts and tables help collectors identify unknown gemstones and check for genuineness.

This is a very informative book with some good pictures, especially for the beginner who is learnig about gemstones. I read and reference it often. I am very pleased with this book and I look forward to using it for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Gemstones of the World.......2007-09-12

I use it all the time. It has answered all of my questions. Great book.

3 out of 5 stars Great book, tiny print..........2007-08-31

I so want to read this book but every time I try I get a headache because the print is so tiny, and that is with my reading glasses on. Otherwise a very interesting book!

5 out of 5 stars Best overall gemstone book ever.......2007-08-08

I bought the 2001 edition several years ago and found it indispensable at the jewelry store where I worked. Now that I'm getting into the nitty gritty of the Graduate Gemologist program at the GIA, I'm quite pleased to find an updated version available. I expect I'll be taking this to school with me to replace several large, ungainly lab manuals that haunt my desk.

This book makes a great cornerstone for any gem library. I own many gem guides and encyclopedias twice the size and weight of this while containing considerably less information. This one has the most complete collection of information and pictures I've seen anywhere at an astonishingly diminutive size. If you plan to buy only one gem book in your lifetime, I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Gemstone trader's bible.......2007-07-28

I dabble in gemstones - buying and selling from Brazil, Colombia and other countries. Schumann's book is a bible - an essential reference with a very accessable layout, excellent and concise information. Rarely do I need to seek other sources when researching stones.

This is the best book for gemstone I ever have. It's very detail and compact information without too much bla... bla... bla...

A great travel guide for those buying/looking at gemstones, lots of visual id's...well worth price.

5 out of 5 stars Professor of Gemology aka Jasper.......2006-06-23

This book is excellent for everyone. Perfect combination of words and pictures. The things I found to be useful are the descriptions for each gemstone and they have a list of what each gemstone may possibly be confused with. They also give you alternative names for gemstones and the history of the name with its meaning. If you are interested in gemstones this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference!!!.......2006-06-16

I use this book constantly as a reference in my hobby. It not only has complete descriptions of the gemstones, but the color pictures are marvelous and include not just one, but MANY pictuers of the gemstones in the rough, polished and cut states. You will be glad you purchased this book.

5 out of 5 stars What the others did not say..........2005-11-25

I am going to leave out any helpful information given by the previous reviews, and say what impressed me most about this fantastic little guide. Its size is perfect, the hardback made me happy because it arrived just after another field guide (petersons) which fell apart, losing pages when I first looked into it, and this book looks like it will endure for some time, so yeah! for quality of workmanship, and there are layers and layers of information in this referance.

While scanning it I found on page 142 a very quick yet in-depth study of Layered Stones, and I will say that I was very interested to see the way a (true) cameo was formed and that cameos were once (perhaps still) fashioned from a stone of this sort, such as an agate, and that the base layer of a cameo is dyed while the uppermost portion is left without dye resulting in the two tone effect rather than the stone being two differing stones. What a pleasent surprise! So, you would not need to worry of losing the carved portion from just such a piece, because they were made from the same stone. There is on the opposite page a pictoral step by step illustration of the craft in photos. Also the creation of a cameo is explained so neatly at the bottom caption of this page, in 9 easy steps.

Other things to referance on the same page: Layer Stones, Onyx, Sard onyx, Cornelian onyx, Niccolo,& Intaglio.

I will try to add some pictures for you all, later on, from my books, (the ones I review) on stones gems and fossils. See my other reviews for additional great book referances.

This book has the most information thus far where mining is concerned. Very helpful to me,as I do not always know which way to go with the ethical issues on mining, anyway... and still I am curious about various methods and their effects on the environment. But I love what we bring forth from these fissures and landscapes.
This guide is just so loaded with illustrations! There are so many wonderful pictures, some of people doing their mining work and also with those who cut polish and that sort of thing (drill, color, engrave, polish) nice added touch.

Healing is included in a small section near the end of this guide book as well. Since this is one of my particular interests I was happy to see it.

And so from drilling to healing this guide is quite complete.
There seems to be a page of pictures of stones (mostly faceted and ready for jewelry) for every written page. Left side, the writing, and right side, gorgeous pictures... of lots of stones! This seems to be the basic layout.

I am relishing each and every page of this book! I could go on but someone else will so... remember to see my other reviews for a few more gemstone books that are just really excellant, if you are at all into this sort of thing. I just love these kinds of books.

If I had waited, having had this book longer I would only have more great things to say, of this I am sure, I just could not wait to add a good review! I highly suggest this book!

3 out of 5 stars Schumanns book of his own cocktails.......2003-12-28

one reviewer accuses another of quibling over a couple of recipes, when in fact the quibble is over 11 very well-known recipes.

Calling Schumann "the master" is a bit much. Some people love him like a god, while others (like me) see him as stuck in an era just after 70's faux-cocktails, and just before this new renaissance in historically researched cocktails. Schumann is a bit of an enigma, if he is right why doesn't he explain his research and way of thinking? He is too good to talk to those who bought his book?

At the end of the day it is just a book of how Charles Schumann makes his cocktails, and is not of any historical value.

Try the Joy of Mixology by Gary Regan for a better balanced veiw of cocktails.

5 out of 5 stars Don't quibble with the master.......2003-09-03

This is an excellent book on cocktails, the philosophy of bartending, and the history of various alcohols. I have never seen a better single book for the home or professional bartender.

A number of reviewers have already expressed their enthusiasm for this great book, but some have qualified their admiration by quibbling with Schumann over a recipe or two, claiming that the master has "got it wrong" and that they know the "correct" way that a particular drink should be prepared. These reviewers are entitled to their opinions, but I think potential readers of Schumann's book would do well to note that there is no definitive recipe for any sufficiently well-established cocktail, just as no two chefs will agree on the recipe for a perfect omelette. Schumann offers elegant, minimalist versions of almost all of the great cocktails -- what more do you want?

3 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover!.......2003-06-01

To some people the "American Bar" by Charles Schumann is their bible. Indeed it is beautifully printed, illustrated and presented. However, under closer scutiny this books claims of using original recipes is somewhat suspicious.

At this present time, there is a renaissance going on in cocktail making, and historical study of recipes. That may sound pompous, but it is true. And due to this on-going renaissance, glaring holes are being exposed in Herr Schumann's book.

Here are the ones that I found, the fact that they are extremely well known recipes makes it even worse.

Bellini (lemon juice. why?),
Caipirinha (lime wedge. no whole lime?),
Kamikaze (rose's lime "juice". why?),
Long Island Iced Tea (orange juice. why?),
Mai Tai (rose's lime "juice". why?),
Mojito (crushed ice. why?),
Old Fashioned ("fill with soda or water". why?),
Rob Roy (dry AND sweet vermouth. why?),
Sazerac (1. bourbon, instead of American Rye, 2. "fill with water". both Why?),
Scotch Sour (powdered sugar AND sugar syrup. Why?),
Sidecar (no sugar rim. why?),

There are no explanations as to why the recipes are so unorthodox, they are just stated as fact. Blindly following these recipes leads to bartenders who think they know it all, because they are using Schumann's recipe, but not having any indepth knowledge of the history of the cocktail.

If you are a bartender, or want to be, then you will probably end up buying this book anyway, just to see what the fuss is about. Do yourself a favour and make sure you buy plenty of other books, so you can compare them.

As someone who has been a bar manager, and head bartender, I wouldn't hire someone who insisted on making cocktails to Schumann's specifications.

There is some sound advice in the back of the book, but the recipes themselves are not worth buying the book for.

Buy this book, and lots of others to compare it to.

5 out of 5 stars This book is my bible.......2000-06-21

If I wasn't a devouted Christian, Charles Schumann would be my God. This book exudes class, the maroon cover and the black binding make it worth having simply for the pose value. This book is an invaluable fountain of cocktail knowledge, interspersed with Schumann's own advice, for instance with the recipe for Long Island Iced Tea he wryly remarks "I personally never pour vodka and gin together"(funnier in print). If you like cocktails, or simply want to know about them (there is a comprehensive history of varoius alcohols), buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece in it's kind.......1999-11-01

For all those enjoying a good dinner party where cocktails and longdrinks are essential parts, this book gives you a most comprehensive guide in this category. A book giving simply the best of advice and tips in the field of mixing, shaking or blending drinks. Looks great too!

    Book Description

Building on the research presented in their previous edition, Advertising and the World Wide Web (1999), editors David W. Schumann and Esther Thorson offer the expertise of active scholars in the area of Internet advertising in this new volume, and allow readers to reflect on the ever-changing nature of the Internet. Internet Advertising marks this important point in history, taking into account the state of practice, theoretical conceptualizations, empirical research, creative typologies, and potential considerations.

Nearly all chapters are in the form of integrated reviews of theory and research, which provide a source of both previous knowledge, as well as future focus for advertising strategy. The volume is arranged in four sections covering:
    *the foundations of Internet advertising theory;
    *consumer response to Internet advertising;
*topical areas in which Internet advertising has significant influence on the consumer; and
*human needs and trends that will likely have significant impact on the future of Internet advertising.

This contemporary analysis of Internet advertising will appeal to all practitioners and “students” of the Internet, and will effectively suit courses taught in this area.

      Book Description

Food Safety Law Michael S. Schumann, Thomas D. Schneid, B. R. Schumann, and Michael J. Fagel Widely publicized food-related illnesses and deaths within the past few years focused public and political attention on the food industry. The most familiar foodborne bacteria, E. Coli and Salmonella, featured prominently in discussions regarding food safety. Today's consumers also worry about pesticides, growth hormones, use of radiation, and contaminants or pathogens that lurk in the food. Food inspection, labeling, and food safety laws in the United States have been relatively untouched for ninety years. In 1996, major legal changes took place. Providing a safe food supply became one of the natoin's highest priorities. No longer can food handlers, processors, packers, or direct service professionals continue doing business in the same manner. Food Safety Law provides extensive information on the USDA and the FDA, the primary agencies responsible for food safety. The book avoids the use of complicated legal and technical jargon by using easily understood language. This Timely Book Also Discusses The appendixes contain a wealth of reference material, including, on computer diskette, the complete Final Rule on the FSIS Pathogen Reduction and HACCP System for meat and poultry establishments. Food Safety Law is the most comprehensive and current collection of information on food safety regulation on the market today. Not only a primer in current food safety law for professionals directly involved in agriculture, food processing, preparation, service, packing, handling, safety industries or the agencies that regulate them, the book is also for students who are planning a food-related career. In addition, hospital administrators, insurance providers, risk and loss control professionals, underwriters, law students, and attorneys—anyone who is or may be affected by the food industry—will find this book provides essential information.

      Book Description

In Crossing Paths, John Daverio explores the connections between art and life in the works of three giants of musical romanticism. Drawing on contemporary critical theory and a wide variety of nineteenth-century sources, he considers topics including Schubert and Schumann's uncanny ability to evoke memory in music, the supposed cryptographic practices of Schumann and Brahms, and the allure of the Hungarian Gypsy style for Brahms and others in the Schumann circle. The book offers a fresh perspective on the music of these composers, including a comprehensive discussion of the 19th century practice of cryptography, a debunking of the myth that Schumann and Brahms planted codes for "Clara Schumann" throughout their works, and attention to the late works of Schumann not as evidence of the composer's descent into madness but as inspiration for his successors. Daverio portrays the book's three key players as musical storytellers, each in his own way simulating the structure of lived experience in works of art. As an intimate study of three composers that combines cultural history and literary criticism with deep musicological understanding, Crossing Paths is a rich exploration of memory, the re-creation of artistic tradition, and the value of artistic influence.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great topic, but know your music theory!.......2004-08-30

Crossing Paths deals with the confluence of three of the greatest composers of the nineteenth century, and the influence they had on each other. The interactions are absolutely fascinating. I am a decent amateur pianist and know a moderate amount of music theory. In places, this book went past my level of understanding. Nonetheless, I could glean the broad outlines, and was still able to appreciate the combined influences evident in the music of these three composers. The discussion of whether or not Brahms and Robert Schumann used code in the music to honor Clara was interesting. A lot of time was spent on the musical relationship between Brahms and the Hungarian violinist Joachim--not part of the title, but certainly another important "crossing path". However, if one does not have a pretty solid background in musicology and music theory, I would be somewhat hesitant to recommend the book. If you have such a background, and love Romantic music, you will likely enjoy it very much.

4 out of 5 stars A reviewers are not equal.......2002-07-20

After reading a negative review on these pages at the advice of the reviewer I bought the Cambridge book he recommended. That was a mistake. Whereas the Cambridge book is a good reference book with lots of technical info and good photographs, it has not one photograph of rock in the field - precisely what I need. I've since purchased Schumann's Hand Book and I like it considerably more. The Cambridge book will sit on my shelf, Schuman's will get out in the field and serve me well.

1 out of 5 stars This book is a waste of money, it is very poor.......1998-12-23

I have actually reviewed this book for publication but the journal's policy is to not use negative reviews so it never appeared. It is difficult in just 1,000 words to summarize my review but I will say that the book is loaded with technical deficiencies, flat-out errors and inconsistencies that make it a very poor reference work. Furthermore, it was translated by someone who knew nothing of minerals so the errors introduced by the translator are monumental, hundreds! There are terms devised by the translator that mean nothing to English readers and don't appear in any other mineral/gem book of any kind!

A truly bad look, yet it enjoys good sales because the public is so ill-informed about mineralogy.

3 out of 5 stars Fine coffee-table book with great color photographs........1997-11-17

Originally published in German in 1985, this paperback is full of wonderful color photographs. Many specimens are from Germany or from other parts of Europe, and anyone wanting to view such specimens, but cannot travel to a museum in Europe, is advised to get this book as it would be an easier trip.

The text is non-technical, written for the layman with brief descriptions of the minerals, and is not to be used as an identification guide (as indeed some definitions are imprecise; e.g. the definition of a mineral), but is an interesting book and would make a fine coffee-table book for those interested in minerals (and in rocks, as half the book is devoted to rocks), with beautiful photographs. It might also make an introduction to the subject for friends of mineralogists who enjoy the beauty of minerals.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and complete. Excellent.......2004-08-06

I've found this book really invaluable. It's explanations are very clear, and everything is arranged as numbered steps to make it easy to remember. There are also photographs for every step, so you can build up a complete picture of the technique being described. There's no waffle or padding - everything is concise and to the point.

Their coverage is also very complete, with lots of useful variations and alternatives, but still presented without confusing those looking for the basic technique.

I've been studying this book for a year now, and I still find myself going back to it. I would recommend it to any sea kayaker.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all kayakers.......2001-06-15

I have just read my copy of "Sea Kayak Rescue -- The Definitive Guide to Modern Reentry and Recovery Techniques" by Roger Schumann and Jan Shriner. And like their classes, it is outstanding.

Everything is covered from basic paddle float reentry to the "Hand of God" rescue. And it is written in a straight foward style with plenty of photos to make things clear. It even includes some real-life stories.

There is also plenty of basic information about safety, equipment and skills.

Anyone who paddles anywhere, from flat lakes to the raging sea can find something to learn in this book, so it is a must read for everyone.
