A little book with a life-changing message.......2007-05-14
Have you ever wondered what is missing in our culture? In our churches? In our workplaces? In our homes? In our "selves"? Volf offers a compelling diagnosis for one of modern culture's most significant and serious problems. I dare anyone to read this book and walk away unchanged. At the very least it will change your perspective, at best it may change your life.
Beautiful.......2007-03-31
Volf does an incredible service for the church in writing this. He is neither preachy nor condescending, but is thoughtful, articulate and weaves together a beautiful theology of forgiveness. This book fills a large gap in the thought and reflection of the church in America, and deserves careful attention to anyone wishing to follow Jesus.
The Best Book I've Read on the Subject of Forgiveness.......2006-10-25
As far as understanding the nature and power of forgiveness, this was a paradigm shifter for me. More importantly, it moved me to action, literally becoming a catalyst for mending, what was at the time, a seriously damaged relationship. I have not read a better book on the subject. Volf's a deep thinker, but he doesn't have his head in the sand. He writes from a place of humility and grace. And his understanding of the Gospel and what it makes us capable of becoming is so illuminating and life-giving. I hope I don't sound too enamored with the man, but his insights have proven to be very wise. I feel that I am in his debt.
Primer for Christians, Other Faiths or Even No Faith.......2006-05-16
This is a primer on the most gracious acts we can participate in: giving and forgiving. It is for Christians as well as those of other faiths or even no faith. The author sets out to explain first who is God and explains the difference between God's reality and his image. He then "...examines how to conceive of and live out two basic human practices, giving and forgiving."
Dr. Volf admits this is not a scholarly book, but says that "Most books I write, I write for myself, as s spiritual exercise almost." I found it a thought provoking study that requires contemplation rather than a quick fifteen minutes of reading before bedtime. I also see it as a basis for a Bible study class resulting in endless interesting discussions.
While Bible verse references are frequent, the author refers to the classics in literature as well as examples from movies. This book is not stuck in the stories of 2000 years ago, but in the reality of our times as well as those of Jesus.
Through each chapter the author defines the differences between God's acts of giving and our own, as well the differences in how we forgive. Early on he states with authority that "Faith is the first part of the bridge from self-centeredness to generosity." Dr. Volf's explanations provide a clarity which had me shaking my head in understanding many times. We all know it is good to give a gift, but as the author says, "When a gift is given, life becomes extraordinary because God's own gift giving flows through the giver." This is a perspective I hadn't considered, but it feels like the sun rising on a new day.
He goes on to address the question of why forgiveness is required and says it is a "...special kind of gift." He is not unrealistic and acknowledges how difficult it is. Examples from his own family show that it can be done, even in the most difficult situations. We can only hope to learn to forgive half as well as his parents did.
I challenge you to undertake the study of this subject. Give yourself the gift of knowledge and understanding, which will benefit those around you.
Dr. Volf, Director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture and the Henry B. Wright Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School, is a native of Croatia. He is the author ten books, including "Exclusion and Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness and Reconciliation" which won the 2002 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. "Free of Charge: Giving and Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace" was commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury as the Official 2006 Lent Book.
Powerful lessons from a man who's walked the walk.......2006-03-21
In this practical and profound book, Volf gets down to the nitty-gritty of what it means for us as Christians to forgive those who have wronged us. Simply put as he states in his book, "We forgive because God forgives. We forgive as God forgives. We forgive by echoing God's forgiveness." While this is one of those deceptively simple lessons that takes me a minute to learn but a lifetime to master, Volf has given his fellow Christian brothers and sisters some tools to get us started on this journey toward reconciliation.

Excellent Bond Book.......2007-05-22
I highly recommend this book. It gives thorough and strait-forward information on every aspect of fixed-income investment vehicles. This is a great way to learn about this market if one is new to it.
A Must Have.......2004-10-10
As a former techie who found his way to the wonderful world of supporting a fixed income desk, I found this book to be an excellent overview of the bond market. The author explains complex concepts such as duration and yield in terms that anyone can understand. This is by far the best introductory book to the bond market I have read (and I have read many)!
Insightful!.......2004-06-30
In this very good beginner's guide to the bond market, author Michael V. Brandes addresses all of the fundamental questions clearly and concisely. Bond math can be daunting, but while the author includes a few equations for illustrative purposes, he clearly addresses his book to the general run of individual investors. The book, which has moments of surprising good humor, says right off the bat that bond investing can be dull in comparison to stock investing, not because the stakes are lower, but because the elements of personality and surprise are considerably more muted in the debt market than in the equity markets. We highly recommend this book, even though it is pedantic at times - a risk you take when you venture into the complex realm of bond investing.
A Great Book on Bonds.......2003-10-23
I read the Motley Fool Investment Guide and really liked it, so when I saw this at the bookstore with Tom Gardner's endorsement on it, I thought I'd give it a shot. Just like the Fools, this book is written for regular people and is pretty humorous (for an investment book!). The chapters are well organized so that you learn about bonds "step-by-step". It includes discussions about every type of bond and advice on how to put them into your
portfolio. It's definitely not written like a textbook -- even the complicated concepts come across clearly. In short, this is a great book. I found it easy to understand and, most importantly, full of extremely useful information.
Awesome & Insightful.......2003-10-21
I was not expecting to gain this much insight on the topic of bonds and investing but am delighted to have picked this book up and savoured it to the last page in the course of one plane ride!
Adept, succinct without compromising depth, this young new author has really delivered on his promise to give us the "bare essentials" that anyone should know!

Customer Reviews:
Male Erotica!.......2007-06-05
This is an outstanding collection of erotica. Illustrations and drawings are really high quality and very erotic. Trust me, folks, these are not "cartoons" - but very stimulating and suggestive drawings of stylized "men" (no, these guys don't really exist....). Most people think that "explicit" equals "erotic". Wrong. Erotic is evoked through the imagination, and these artists have LOTS of imagination!
Book Description
“Uncensored grace is what you get from a loving God when all the religious types have gone home, and every last hope for your own effort has blown up in your face.”
What comes to mind first when you think “Las Vegas”? Maybe glitz and glam. Or dealers and dancers, high rollers and hell raisers. And why not? After all, the town they call Sin City is an American icon, an anything-goes shrine to pleasure, money, sex–and another lucky roll of the dice.
Probably when you think Las Vegas, you don’t think about God or grace.
Neither did Jud Wilhite when he was first invited to become the senior pastor at the city’s largest church. But the people he’s met since moving there with his family have changed all that. Today, Vegas stands for something much different and more surprising for Jud. He doesn’t think of Vegas as Sin City anymore. Now, to him, it is Grace City.
Working with veteran journalist Bill Taaffe, Jud takes you past the neon and the hype to another side of Vegas–where people whose lives have been marred by loneliness, addiction, and despair are finding hope and freedom in a vital community of faith. Stripped is an account of what happens when ordinary people get honest with each other and an extraordinary God. In its pages you’ll meet gaming industry movers and shakers. You’ll meet working exotic dancers, a Flying Elvis, an American Idol contestant, a cop who won the hearts of a crime-hardened city, and more.
Each of them has encountered what Jud calls “uncensored grace.” He writes, “Uncensored means that there is no formula or membership or performance that stands between you and God’s goodness.”
Stripped is their unforgettable account of people who are betting everything on a very big idea: that as wide and deep and high as your mountain of personal ruin might get, God’s transforming grace is always wider and deeper and higher.

A gift for yourself and others to read!.......2007-08-01
I loved this book so much, I bought 10 more copies for friends, then bought another one of his books! Ive never done that before. Great stories from people living in LV, where I lived 28 yrs.I worked with, and knew Henry, the story of whom is also in the book towards the end. Great chapters, but so are all the others! Great job Jud! I went to Canyonridge, the sister church of Central, great churches, great people, I go back and see them when Im in town! Great book, to read and to share, with "the message" very clear.
AWESOME!!!.......2007-04-10
This is a great book, easy to read and hard to put down. The stories are life-changing and touching, wonderful job, Jud and Bill. Watch out world, "What happens in Vegas, is changing the world!"
What Happens in Vegas Doesn't have to Stay in Vegas!.......2007-04-05
You the know the commercial - "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." A great marketing campaign promoting you to come to sin city and indulge your wildest fancies, because who will know? I'm glad Pastor Jud didn't buy into this with the stories of gospel-renewed lives he has witnessed living in one of America's most notorious cities. What I love about this book is that it showed me how often I write off people because I feel they are beyond hope. This book shows that God's love in Christ can penetrate deeper than our deepest sins, and this has given me a lot of courage and compassion to view others as Jesus views them - with love and forgiveness...and of course, grace. Check this book out. It'll do your heart some good.
Grace city in Las Vegas.......2007-03-31
This is an awesome book about real people in Las Vegas who find Gods amazing grace...the stories are very touching and inspirational. I recommend it for all of us who live in Las Vegas and those who know of our city to gain an understanding of some real people who find hope and love the Lord here!
Grace in Sin City? .......2007-03-23
You bet.
In a city infamous for immorality...love, grace and forgiveness are alive and well. The stories in this book are as real as it gets - as is the God who made each and every transformation possible.

Book Description
In this stunning follow-up to Brian Freeman’s remarkable debut novel, Immoral, Detective Jonathan Stride discovers that there are only two ways to go in Las Vegas. You can hit the jackpot. Or you can get Stripped...
They looked like isolated cases: a hit-and-run and a celebrity murdered during a fling with a prostitute. No one could ever imagine they’d be linked to a brutal crime in Las Vegas’s steamy past—and that the race against the clock to corner a determined serial killer would stir up secrets long thought buried with the dead. As detectives Jonathan Stride and Serena Dial are called separately to investigate, they have no idea what they’re stepping into: a world where desperate ambition rules and loyalties know no bounds, and where their own uncharted emotions and sexual desires will reach an explosive conclusion.
Shocking, twisted, with edge-of-your-seat suspense, Stripped pushes the limits of its heroes and keeps the reader turning ever page until the last plot twist.
Customer Reviews:
This is how you do it.......2007-09-22
This book should be required reading for all thriller writers out there: new and old. Simply a wonderful book.
A powerful study in violence.......2007-09-21
Stripped is Brian Freeman's second novel and builds on the personalities we first encountered in Immoral. It is a remarkably believable and powerful study in violence and how past events can come back thirty years later to haunt you. The personalities are totally believable, the action is on-going and at no point do I figure out how the novel would end. I strongly recommend it.
I'm ready to explore Vegas!.......2007-08-07
Great story, characters, and ending. Recognized many landmarks, and would like to visit many of the ones I havn't been to.
A book you can recommend.......2007-08-06
This book is the rare breed of action, love, and suspense...all rolled into one. It was a real page turner! I never wanted the book to end so I read it a piece at a time. I'm definitely recommending it to my friends.
Great -but maybe one too many turns.......2007-04-12
I thought this book was a great read as was the first book. Since I know both cities ( Duluth & Vegas) it is especailly interesting to me. I can't wait to see if Stride does indeed go back to Duluth?
This book has many twists and turns, maybe one too many would be my only negative comment.

Customer Reviews:
Another book about striptease.......2007-06-06
Naked in Haiti: A sexy morality tale about tourists, prostitutes & politicians is a book about prostitution, but it is set in a place that doubles a strip club. Lots of girls get naked in this book. They strip out of their church clothes, their work clothes, their stripper clothes, and sometimes it gets kinky. They strip to Stravinsky! There's even an anti-striptease - a girl puts her clothes back on in just the sexiest way you can imagine. I think stripper fans will enjoy this book. Hey - I should know - I like strippers and I wrote this book!
Introspection at its finest.......2007-02-14
I enjoyed the book for several reasons. The best part, for me, is the "Lessons Learned" section at the back and his apparent self-actualization. What a victory that must be, especially at his age. I read a lot of biographies so I can learn how to use other's experiences as a guide for my own. I met Brent at Vegas airport Border's during a plane delay and yakked his ear off (sorry man) over his success as a published writer. He's a great guy and had some great insights on living. I wish him and his wife the best of luck and hope someday myself I can stand in that spot signing something I've written as well.
Just ok.......we have read better..............2006-07-26
this book was ok..but poorly written..and disconnected.
Read..Ivy Leauge stripper and Dance to Despair ( Memoirs of
an exotic dancer) by Rebeckka Sathen Black...these books were
excellent in comparison..Lap Dance was also very interesting...
take our word for it...we are exotic dancers and nobody knows
it better than us.....
O'Reilly agrees great stuff.......2006-07-21
I recently saw the author on O'Reilly Factor and was very impressed with what he had to say, so I bought the book. I too am a former dancer and was interested in the perspective of a man who worked "inside" (for more years than I could ever last.)
Couldn't put it down, the book is great fun to read. The author doesn't make himself out to be a hero, or all knowing, or even all good. What he does do, is take you for a ride through the club with his stories of events and his keen perceptions. You end up wanting to know more.
A must read for any man wanting to understand dancers and the strip club business.
An OK Read, not what I was expecting............2006-06-19
Typical mob stuff and it all plays out like a Las Vegas CSI show. I danced at this club years ago and the owner was a pretty raunchy man. No class and of course was one of those managers who wanted favors from his girls. If you have lived in Vegas for a few years it's actually getting pretty old to hear about this on the news and now it's in writing to go down in history forever.
Typical man book, written from his point of view. More about the crime part of the business than the actual dancing side. There are better books out there that are more about the actual dancing side of the business and not the crime drama.......

FROM THE DESK OF JACKI SIMMONS: PROLOGUE © 2005 Trina aint hardly the baddest bitch. Trust me, the diamond princess aint have a damn thing on La Perla. She, no matter how many songs she writes, will never be me. She claims that shit; I lived that shit. And then some. Furs kept me warm. Diamonds weighed me down. My ass got permanent jet lag from all the trips I was taking. Parking lot full of cars, safe full of money, cabinets full of liquor. The finest men in the world beat my door down trying to get a taste. All I had to do was smile to get whatever I wanted. I can still smell the blaze they used to hit with me; the champagne that flowed for me is still on my lips. Im still smiling thinking about how fun those parties were. I had been a good girl my whole life, and when I finally broke out of my shell, I was ready to give em hell. They say life has a way of making you live it. No truer words have ever been spoken. At the peak, at the very top, the height of my fame, something happened. Its called life. Just when I thought it couldnt get any better, it went and got worse. I dont blame anyone else but myself. Too busy ballin outta control to notice what was going on with the real world. I thought I was slick, thought I could outsmart life, but the Good Lord looked me in the eye and like Biggie, said, You dead wrong. By the time my high came down, I was out of it, left and right. The queen had to give up her crown and go back to stomping grapes with the rest of the kingdom. Ive come a long way in the past few months. No doubt Ive still got a long way to go. Ill never get over it but I can try and move on. Ive buried my demons and made peace with my past. If anyone didnt like it, they can kiss my honey-brown ass. Im not proud of any of it. But I did what I had to do to survive. I heard a funny statement the other day. Something like, Its a cold world out there, and if you aint under the umbrella, you gonna get rained on. Lord knows I was soakin wet.

The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13
Don't be fooled by the title or cover. This is far from your average story about a young woman lost on the wrong path. Stripped is your gateway into the life of Ciaza, a young woman who had it all and lost it all and is determined to do whatever it takes to keep it all. Overall this book is a pretty fast read with enough of a hook to keep you reading until the end. Although the ending seemed a bit rushed and some of the suspense wasn't fully explored, Jacki Simmons has indeed lived up to all the hype surrounding her freshman effort.
1. What did you like best about this book?
I loved that Jacki was able to turn a tired, over used scenario into her own.
2. What did you dislike about this book?
I liked the book overall, and although the author took a very common plot and added her own story to it, it does boil down to another book about a young girl lost trying to make her way.
3. How can the author improve this book?
Stripped would be better if the book didn't end so quickly.
Jacki Rips It Up.......2007-03-09
Jacki Simmons rips it up in her debut novel "Stripped". Caiza has been walking around with rosed colored designer glasses, living every girls dream life. Ummmm... In this page turning novel you will see just how far a girl will go to stay on top of her game. Reviewed by Glamour Coast 2 Coast Readers Oline Book Club.

I REALLY WASTED GAS AND TIME SEARCHING FOR THIS BOOK. IT WAS NOT GOOD AT ALL. WITH ALL THE HYPE AROUND MS.SIMMONS, I WAS SURE THT THIS BOOK WOULD BE A PAGE TURNER BUT FOR ME IT WAS NOT. I FELT THT THIS WAS REALLY HAD TO FOLLOW AND I FELT IT WAS A WASTE OF MONEY. I STILL AM AWAITING THE NEXT BOOM FROM THE AUTHOR AND MAYBE IT WILL BE A BETTER READ.
What's a young woman to do?.......2007-02-21
Caiza Bell thought she was sitting on top of the world, until things made a turn for the worst and all she could think is how I will survive.
Trying to get thru school, pay bills which she is not used to doing and keep food in her and Sparkles mouth; she does the one thing that is a sure way to solve her problems.
That's to Use what you got to get what you want, and that she does. She is the baddest b*tch Trina aint got nothing on me is what she tells herself, and she does the one thing she never thought she would do; strip.
This was an enjoyable first read by Ms. Simmons; I look forward to what's to come from Ms. Simmons.
Very Good read!!!.......2006-12-23
I really enjoyed this 1st novel from Jacki Simmons "Stripped". The story of Caiza is a very interesting one. Caiza goes through many changes, ups and downs during the course of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Looking at Self.......2007-04-07
I am not a big fan of Relationship help books. They tend to pacify the readers, and are very predictable. This book written by Ms.Black offers a different spin on relationships advice, it points out how we must possess the same qualities that we are requiring in a mate. It has precise points, and a mechanism for positive and eteneral change for women's attitudes and attributes.
Keeping it real.......2007-01-28
Ms. Black writes in a forthright, down-to-earth manner. It is refreshing to read a book that gets to the point without "educational" pontification which makes one decipher what is being discussed.
Women, we have issues. Women, we can deal with them armed with the stuff of publications like this.
Simply put.......2007-01-23
I love how simple and easy this book is to read and comprehend. I've bought several copies for a few of my girlfriends. LaDawn breaks down these truths to the simplest forms and debunks the myths that society and the media has gotten women to buy into. I deifinitely look forward to reading her others books.
The Naked Truth.......2006-11-09
In this little black book, LaDawn enlightens African American sisters on finding a quality black man and keeping him. It is a realistic relationship guide that teaches the reader how to be the kind of person who will attract the man that you deserve. It is full of personal anecdotes and scenarios from a variety of sisters that will make you laugh, but these stories are oh so real! In this handy little "up-in-your-face," "sister-girl" book, you will learn how to let go of the past and stop dating unavailable men, as well as learn to date outside the box and make your relationship a top priority. This book does teach you how to land the very best black man--for you!
**** The Ultimate Love Guide ****.......2006-11-03
I love this book! I bought copies for each of my girlfriends. Black gives women concrete tools for taking control of their love lives. Her message isn't superficial (hair, make-up, sex)-- it focuses on being the best you in order to get the best out of love. She stopped me from my negative thinking when it comes to brothers and really taught me that good love is out there and I need to cast a wider and more informed net.
I tripped up on this book because it was referenced in a magazine article and this little book changed my view on love. It is a must read for all women married and single looking to get the most out of their relationships.

Amaze Your Friends With Your Knowledge of Modern Art!.......2006-11-24
Tomkins' five essays are a great place to start if you've ever wondered about the purpose behind the "avant-garde" in art and want a general overview of its origins. The chapter on Jean Tinguely is especially fine: it is hard to resist the story of a man who builds robots designed to continuously paint abstracts, start fires or simply destroy themselves. The book is well written, easy to read and contains a subtle sense of humor. Reading this book will make you more intelligent.
excellent art criticism for the neophyte.......1998-04-18
this book is a surprisingly accessible work on the lives of five important artists (duchamp, cage, tinguely, rauschenberg, and cunningham) of the avant-garde, each working from a different discipline. tomkins has gathered exhaustive biographical data on each artist and the reader gets the impression that he is good friends with each of them. his critical stance on the artwork discussed is respectful, and he refrains from using a lot of artworld jargon. a very entertaining read.
