4 out of 5 stars Would be a great book for a child interested in Egyptian Hieroglyphics.......2006-07-10

This would also make a great book for a child who is interested in Egyptian Hieroglyphics. Like I was during a part of my gradeschool years. The book's layout is simple, and would not be overwhelming, like a university level text book on actual Hieroglyphic usage would be. The book is loaded with pictures and guides to how to draw them. Some very basic understanding to the meaning of actual Hieroglyphics are also given.

4 out of 5 stars good word vocabulary.......2001-06-19

This book does not really teach you how to read and write heiroglyphs very well but it does show many words and how they were used on tombs and ancient manuscripts. This book is probably not the best book for someone who is a beginner and trying to learn how to learn hieroglyphs.

3 out of 5 stars Egyptian Hieroglyphics : How to Read and Write Them.......2001-03-01

Good graphics, but little on reading, writing, grammar, sythetic or general principles of the language or extracting meaning from actual Egyptian inscriptions which have a string of hieroglyphs. Better for beginners: Karl-Theodor Zauzich. Hieroglyphs without mystery: an introduction to ancient egyptian writing. (translated and adapted for english speaking readers by Ann Macy Roth) University of Texas Press, Austin. 1992. 121 pp. This has actual examples from the Tutankhamun exhibition. After this book, Colier and Manley.

It would help if there were other reviews that indicated the easiest path to mastering other ancient languages with cultural samples as well, e.g. egyptian hieroglyphics, akkadian cuneiform, sanskrit, biblical hebrew, ancient greek. The main question I have is: What is the first book that is easy (but actually gives you some useful information on one or two simple but original inscriptions)? Second book on some, but not all, actual grammar and vocabulary for some brief sample of literature. Third book more complete grammar. Fourth book grammar, more vocabulary, readings, etc. I can do better if I advance in easy, digestible steps, but I am nevertheless willing to commit to the effort required for mastery as my ultimate goal.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Art Projects--Poor For Anything Else.......2001-01-12

This thin trade paperback has some merits. If you are an artsy person, it contains nicely drawn heiroglyphics at a large size that makes it easy to learn to duplicate the finer details. It combines them to form some simple words like "daughter, water, to attack, to fly, war, enemy" to give your art some true meaning. As a art book, as a "how to draw heiroglyphics convincingly" I give the book 4 stars. As a manual for learning how to read them? I give it 1 star.

The scholar will find little of use in this book. There is an incredibly limited vocabulary provided and almost no information on the actual writing process (grammar, orientation, phonetic transcription). The word bank covered would only take a chapter of time in a more indepth book. (Try Mark Colliers' How to Read Egyptian Heiroglyphics A Step By Step for a good teach yourself to read manual.)

If you are looking for well done examples of heiroglyphics for art purposes, this is a useful book. If you wish to expand your knowledge in the reading and writing of heiroglyphics you will be terribly disappointed at the waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Basically a nice visual dictionary for artists........2000-10-01

This lovely book has been around for about ten years. Stephane Rossini is a scholar, but her purpose here is more practical, I think. Although the title says, "How to read and write them," the real value of this book is about how to draw & use hieroglyphics in your arts & crafts with some accuracy as to their meanings. About five pages of this book are given (in small print) to principles of Egyptian writing, pronunciation & word analysis. The rest of the book is crammed with hundreds of excellent drawings & calligraphic symbols, divided into consonant sounds, phonetic signs, & determinative (categorical) signs. To put it simply, you get birds, bugs, gods, knots, flowers, eyes, mammals, fish, figures doing different jobs, lizards, crosses & abstractions, all in an authentic Egyptuan style.

With adult guidance, Egyptian Hieroglyphics will be useful in children's arts & crafts projects.

96 pages long, nothing fancy about it. I've had a copy on arts book shelf for years.

      Book Description

Sometimes when teaching children an aspect of our Catholic Faith, it is helpful to have a special activity to reinforce the lesson. They need exercises that train the mind or move the heart. For this reason, Catholic teachers and parents will appreciate these one hundred thoughtfully crafted activities drawn from the new universal Catechism of the Catholic Church. The worksheets, memory games, Bible studies, etc. in this book require little preparation or materials and are designed to supplement any catechetical text or program for children in grades 1 through 8. Though simple to use, these exercises uncover some of the depth and richness of Catholic doctrine and practice. Topics of the activities are organized according to the four pillars of the Catechism -- Faith, Sacraments, Morality and Prayer. Each activity is self-contained, perforated to tear out and reproduce for group use. Whether it is memorizing the Creed, understanding the Bible, or learning to pray, these exercises will enrich the faith of children and those who teach them.

5 out of 5 stars highly recomened by a novice volunteer catechist.......2007-09-28

I teach 8th grade confirmation ccd class. This book has many good activities that can give you filler material or games that can take up to 30min. As a catechist for the first time it really helps me add to my lesson plans and give me a fall back if we have extra time to fill without the children going wild.

      5 out of 5 stars wonderful resource.......2007-09-24

This a a great resource for Religious Education classes. I ordered one and after reviewing it decided to get one for each of our catechists. The book consists mostly of tear out worksheets but many of them, particuluarly in the highr grades, have substantive content (not your usual crosswords and word finds). As a former homeschooler I would highy recommend this for Catholic homeschooling families as well since it covers several grades.

      5 out of 5 stars excellent resource.......2006-08-04

One of the better resourcs I've found lately to better involve CCD/religious ed students and keep them interested.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I thought it was.......2003-02-24

This is a nice book, but I thought it would be more substantive. I was hoping the book might help me come up with ideas for teaching my religious education class, but found the "activities" consisted mostly in little tear-out worksheets. Especially for the lower grades, the "activities" might be just a little coloring page, for example, that illustrate a lesson you have to come up with yourself. So it's a fine companion to reinforce what you're already teaching, but it won't inspire you to come up with a lesson plan.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for Religion Teachers...........2002-02-26

I taught 5th and 6th grade Religion at Holy Family Cathedral School in Tulsa, OK. This book is wonderful for filling in those times when the students get finished early, or you need to 'stretch out' a lesson.
The book is divided into 3 sections, early, middle, and high school level. While I wish there had been more activities for middle school, the book is worth buying.

Rossini was a master of the opera overture. This volume offers six of his best-known overtures, from the operas La scala di seta, Il Signor Bruschino, L'italiana in Algeri, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La gazza ladra and Guillaume Tell (the "Lone Ranger" theme).

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rossini too good to be true.......2007-03-18

Before I purchased this score, Ricordi's claim for it to be "Critical Edition" made me feel skeptical. It is true that Fondazione Rossini of Pesaro and Ricordi have been working on the monumental task of publishing the critical edition of complete works of Rossini, but those opera scores cost a fortune to buy. This score, "Rossini - Favorite Overtures," indeed has SIX of his most famous overtures in critical edition. The only "favorite" one missing here is "Semiramide"--a very small compromise, especially considering the price. It is simply too good to be true.

Rossini's music has suffered greatly by editors and publishers. The most striking example is the overture to "L'italiana in Algeri." This Ricordi score indicates that the usual flute part (as it has traditionally been played) was actually written as a piccolo part. Rossini's piccolo is not just high pitched and loud. It is witty, chirpy, and sarcastic, perfectly fitting for a "dramma giocoso" which "L'italiana" is.

This score is a must for any musician or music lover who is interested in Rossini.

Unfortunately, there are no good recordings made with the critical edition. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra recording on DG is a joke. Listen to the overture to "L'italiana" when the piccolo and other winds rush, unable to keep steady tempo only four bars into the main Allegro section. This orchestra badly needs a conductor for traffic control and to learn that the joke should be in the music, not on them. Norrington's recording with the London Classical Players is not a joke. That is an insult to Rossini with his unmusical and unidiomatic interpretation. Tulio Serafin needs to be resurected to bring full justice to this fine music that is finally available (at least in print) as Rossini originally intended.

              Book Description

Learning another language is a challenge. But navigating the complexities of legal terminology in another language represents a challenge on another level entirely. English as a Legal Language makes this challenge surmountable by providing a lawyer s plain-language guide to English legal terminology. The English as a Legal Language user simply looks under a general heading to find the relevant terms and their usage. Readers may also use this guide to find explanations of words from a translating dictionary. Further, English as a Legal Language may operate as a thesaurus organised according to topic with an alphabetical index. More and more, continental lawyers need the English language. Attempts to convert the language to meet one's own purposes often result in misconceptions, however. The English language has its roots in the Anglo American legal tradition and the continental lawyer may have difficulty understanding a word choice in English without also seeing how it fits into legal thinking and relates to other words in the subject area as a whole. English as a Legal Language offers a comparative lexicon of Anglo American legal systems with European Community law. Any non-English speaking lawyer, and especially continental European lawyers, will find this book of value in their practices, as will businesspeople, accountants, translators, secretaries, and students. This book will enable all practitioners and academics to better express involved ideas in English, to better understand the complexities of English as a legal language, and to avoid the potential mishaps when language barriers prevent a true meeting of the minds.

              Book Description

              • The first book to fully explore the sexual philosophy and practices of the ancient Egyptians

              • Lavishly illustrated  with erotic scenes from papyri that have long been hidden from the public

              • Clarifies the connection of sacred sexuality to Egyptian cosmic symbolism

Until recently the forbidden papyri, whose explicit illustrations of Egyptian sexual practices were judged too shocking, were off limits to all but a few scholars. In this book, the first to fully explore Egyptian sexual philosophy and practices, Egyptologist Ruth Schumann-Antelme provides us a new view of the provocative sexual life of the ancient Egyptians.

Richly illustrated throughout, Sacred Sexuality in Ancient Egypt explains the symbolism of the erotic images found on the inner walls of the temples and tombs as well as those carved into pieces of limestone and sketched on papyri. The authors cover in detail the astonishing erotic scenes illustrating the Turin Papyrus, which have long been kept from public view. These papyri reveal in great detail Egyptian attitudes about love, religion, and even medicine, as well as specific sexual practices. Sacred Sexuality in Ancient Egypt reveals the intimate details of a society in which sexuality was the dynamic principle of the divine world, and the cosmic symbolism of religion imbued every level of Egyptian society with sexual significance.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Scholarship!.......2006-10-30

This text is very interesting and it shows that human sexuality in its self hasn't changed that much over the past few thousand years. However, this book is not for the prudish or "up tight" individuals, the content is presented in a forthright and rather blunt manner. This may even give you a few pointers to spice up your own "playtime", I know I learned a lot.

3 out of 5 stars Touches the surface..........2003-05-14

This book is a great source of information for life in ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphic explanations are offered (from a mundane point of view), clothing and hairstyles are explained, food and artistic cultures are discussed. All of these are explored within sexuality and its expression through Egypt's creation/origination stories. I learned very much about Egypt's pantheon and many questions were answered which I haven't found in other works on Egypt. My only complaint with this beautiful book is the lack of spiritual application. Sexual energy is a necessary part of awakening and enlightenment, and the ancient Egyptians were fully aware of this. The practice, study and employment of sacred sex was a vital piece of their esoteric learning. I was disappointed to find the authors ignoring this aspect completely. After reading the book, the title is misleading. It is "sacred" sexuality only in the sense that the practices studied were originated in the religion of that era.

Ruth Antelme and Stephane Rossini's Sacred Sexuality In Ancient Egypt is the first book to explore the sexual philosophy and practices of the ancient Egyptians, considering the sexual life of the ancients and revealing the social and personal influences of sexuality in their society. Over 160 black and white photos pepper this informative survey of the symbolism of erotic images found in temples and on papyri. A truly intriguing study.

              4 out of 5 stars Bits-n-Pieces.......2001-12-26

This is an entertaining and informative book about sex, drugs and rock and roll in ancient Egypt. I am happy to recommend it for amatuer Egyptologists.

I wish it included a more comprehensive presentation though with more detailed footnotes and much less conjecture (presented as fact).

The presentation also suffers from repeated and tiring comments demeaning men and the dronning insistance of ancient Egypt as really a matriarchal society. The tenor and tone of this book is rich in 1980's feminism.

For example, the author spends considerable verbage attacking female circumcision precisely BECAUSE the Egyptians DID NOT practice it.

Nevertheless, these objections aside, this book is a great coffee table conversation starter and fun to read.

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing . . but it needs a content warning!!!.......2001-12-13

This book dips into the hidden realm of sexuality in Ancient Egypt! However I would only suggest this book to adult readers, as the content is extremely explceit and graphic!!!!
