5 out of 5 stars I Love this Book.......2005-10-14

I've been a huge Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds fan for a while now, and all others who love their music will know that the improv and particular chords used in Live at Luther seeem almost impossible to mimic simply by hearing it. This book brings your favourite songs from Live at Luther to your finger tips with spectacular accuracy.

A must have.

5 out of 5 stars If you get just one DMB tab book..........2005-05-28

...This should be it. Take it from me-- I have all of them, and this is the best one... so far. (Some Devil comes close.)

As previous reviewers have noted, this book includes all the songs left out of the previous volume (which is also excellent). However, they didn't mention that this book is (or at least seems) significantly heftier-- it includes the songs with the long intros and outros, like "Two Step" and "Warehouse".

The transcription of "#41", one of my favorite songs, is perfect. I could never get the chords to sound right before, and now it's easier than ever. "Jimi Thing" is great-- this book includes the extended "What will become of me?" coda. All the others are fantastic as well. Every transcription in here is worth having (except maybe the super-short and -simple "Halloween", but it's still good). Tim Reynolds' solos-- also perfectly transcribed-- are ingenious, though I don't have the ability to do them justice, I'm afraid.

DMB is at their best live, and at the heart of that is Dave's guitar playing. His style is so much freer than in the studio, and this album with Tim showcases his songwriting and guitar ability beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough.......2005-03-05

This is the book I was waiting for, a few more of the non-mainstream D + T songs not played often on radio or other media outlets. I also like the little extras that were included and played on the Live at Luther College CD, like "What Will Become of Me" at the end of "Jimi Thing", and the alternate beginning to "Tripping Billies".
This may not be the best book for novice musicians, however, as the transcriber is quite thorough. Each crazy chord is outlined at the beginning of each song, and there are usually plenty of them, which definitely helps. By listening to the CD enough, and following the music in the book, you can easily follow along. Good book. Thanks. I'm having fun with it.

5 out of 5 stars Song List is Good.......2004-05-13

It has all of the songs that volume one does not have like tripping billies, dancing nancies, two step and more. Good Buy.

This is a well-written biography that eschews mythology in favor of a closer examination of both biographical and musical materials. A generation after the first wave of Mahler appreciation, Peter Franklin takes a new look from a different angle and succeeds in separating myth from fact, making this book a most welcome one. It does, however, presume a certain amount of prior knowledge of Mahler, his circle, and his music, so don't go into it completely cold.

Book Description

As a leading European conductor and the composer of enormous and controversial symphonies, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) inspired mythologizers in his own lifetime. Some of them were personal friends, concerned with countering biased criticism of him in which German-nationalist, hide-bound traditionalist or anti-Semitic elements were often mixed. In this new biography, Peter Franklin reconfronts the myth of Mahler-the-misunderstood-hero and attempts to find the person, or persons, behind the legends. His illuminating biography shows Mahler to be a profoundly sensitive thinker and composer, a dictatorial conductor and husband, an iconoclast and paradoxically, a traditionalist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good, aloof Mahler biography........2003-04-01

This biography is an excellent introduction into the life of the composer Gustav Mahler. The creative process of his symphonies and his relationship with his wife, the free-spirited Alma, is revealed in great detail, and Franklin avoids any declaration of opinion, forming assumptions through thorough research. And the research comes from reliable resources (Alma's diaries, Mahler's letters, Bauer-Lechner's accounts), and Franklin is clear when the resource may not be all-together reliable.

I particularly appreciated the way he handled the hot topic of the detrimental relationship between Mahler and Alma. He claims that the uneasy marriage is due to the fault of both. Mahler wanted Alma to be an ideal wife, but she desired to be free. Some could say that she was an early feminist, but Franklin doesn't make that assertion. The reader is left to form his own opinion.

The storytelling is often very lucid simply by the careful arrangement of primary accounts, be they newspaper articles, memoirs, letters or diary entries.

The book is not a threatening size, but the content is not something that can be absorbed all in one sitting. Two-hundred pages probably isn't enough to explain all of Mahler's life, but I believe everything of general import is mentioned in this book and analysis is thorough and journalistically sound.

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to a philosophical, creative genious.......2001-08-23

The first glance of this biography told me that what I was about to read was an incredabley detailed and devoted branch of modern, biographical literature (warning, have some prior basic knowledge of Mahler before reading!) Dr. Franklin has certainly shined in this exploration, which cerculates the success of a once dreamy, inspirational child, who became a more practical intellectual both as a composer and conducter. The relationships between Mahler's life and his music are forefronted amongst a variety of primrary and secondary sources, including people most close to the impatient, hot-tempered perfectionist, contrasted with those who simply try to interperate his ideas. The course of development is fine-tuned, also, with several illustrated sources, indicating the places where Mahler had worked and their significances. Within this course embodies the causes and effects of his ideas. Austria-Hungary was riddled with anti-semites, which affected Mahler in more ways than one. Vienna, deaths, modernists, religion, nature, nationalism, and other aspects are explored due to their effect, making this exceptional innovator the eclectic, liberal idealist he would increasingly become. These aspects are brought to us honestly and without bias, which is one of Franklins' great assests. The biography is backed up extensively by quotes, especially from the accounts of de La Grange and auxiliary versions. An introduction prepares the reader with Franklin's task throughout the book, accompanied by the usual notes and useful aids, especially for readers wishing to pursue their interests towards other texts.
The special aspect of theis book is the story being told as it was, with the relationships between Mahler and his wife, the people he worked with, friends, family, and even counter-examinations, where no bias lies. The criticisms are presented to us as well as more valuable accounts recording Mahler's abnormal personality in a way in which we can truely get to grips with this man's philosophy, stringing his ideas in juxtaposition and calculating his aims and methods of going about them. If you like song, dance, long and flowing melodies and richly expressive harmonies, then you will certainly take to the nine symphonies of Mahler. Mahler's sense of colour ranks with the great masters of orchestration, and the spirit of song permeates his art, taking inspirations from cultures of countries like China, with the poems of Li Po. You can learn much more about his sources of inspiration, the times in which he composed, and how those times affected Mahler throughout this biography. Franklin brings forthe descriptions and induces two-way notions to get the reader thinking about these sources, as well as picturing Vienna at the turn of the century and the changing, post-romantic era.
Mahler's life is remarkable, and Peter Franklin has clearly gone to trouble not to offend the person that he was and became, acknowledging the borders that shield wrongs lines of thought. For example, Mahler's wife (Alma) insists "a person should remain a 'person' and not be frozen into a legend, turned into an insufferable plaster-bust". Although we tend to think of composers as slightly odd, abnormal and completely different to ourselves, we must remember that they're still human beings. Franklin injects other points which back this up, touching on Mahler's love for nature and spirit, as well as art, love and religion. I have presented enough of the core elements of the biography, and so what is left is to declare the book as an excellent portrayal, using a variety of techniques in order to capture Mahler the Musician, and the real Mahler, whom always questioned the relationship of his life and his music. The book tends to display thoughts of irony, especially about Mahler's death, and would suit any musicain wishing to broaden thier philosophical answers to why we, and issues like those in Mahler's competitive life, exist. Indeed, any philosopher with enough scape to facilitate a focussed examination of a famous composer would find this biography useful. The book, however, does tend to be slightly uneasy about its purpose (in relation to two major preoccupations which are induced by two statements highlighted in the introduction). Franklin acknowledges this, and says there lies a knot of wide "interrelated issues concerning notions about 'art' and 'genious' and the ways in which they were mediated in the individual experience and in public creative activity in nineteenth-century Europe". That does not mean, though, that one can't interperat Franklins' notions; I found that the concepts of the string of issues formed neater towards the end by re-examining the two statements previously mentioned. That way, synoptically, one can focuss and understand the purpose of the accounts and methods in which the author put them to us, so that we may assemble the notions to acheive the resolution which every reader desires. If you are intellectual enough to percept the outcomes of this intelligent journey, simply jump on board!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Spiritual?.......2007-01-12

As one reads this book he must be alert to know the truth. Mr. Kavanaugh writes from a very broad and quasi-Christian viewpoint. His conclusion is that the majority, if not all the composers he writes about are Christian. He assumes all music written by these composers to be without flaw. As near as I can tell he believes that music is amoral. That is, he believes that music can not be right or wrong. This idea is at odds with the supposed Christianity of these composers. Oh, I'm sure many of them were believers. I can tell you though that not all are. And so you see my dilema. I love classical music and reading about the composers. However, I don't enjoy having to sift through a bunch of rubbish posing as spirituality.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for the novice.......2006-11-18

I purchased this book to expand my families appreciation for classical music. We are beginners, at best, and it's hard to know where to start to broaden your understanding. This book was VERY insightful. It is one thing to listen to the music and attempt to appreciate it, but to understand the perspective of the composer and the purpose of major pieces puts everything in a new light. I am really pleased with this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars A Gem for Music Lovers.......2006-01-20

This was a neat little book for folks that like classical music. It gives us something of the personal and spiritual sides of great composers, as well as short summaries of their musical careers. It was good to know something about them besides their names and music, and to get some nice tips on great music you might not be familiar with.

I found that Mozart was not quite the consummate party animal he is portrayed as in `Amadeus', the movie, at least not for his whole life. The author, Patrick Kavannaugh, asks us how each of us would like to have our lives put into biographies for public consumption. I know I would have to pass on that. I found that Haydn was happy and friendly, just like his music. Bruckner was a little hard too know, but well worth the effort to do so, just like his music. Folks like Beethoven, Wagner, and Liszt were very spiritual, though you don't hear much about that, and would not suspect so.

It was also surprising to me that most of them were Catholic, but I guess that makes sense since the Catholic Church has always been a great patron of the arts. Certainly, Mozart's Requiem and Beethoven's Mass are two of the greatest choral pieces ever written.

The book was a little gem for those of us who like classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for Piano Teachers/Music Teachers.......2005-09-14

I used information from this book as a part of my weekly Piano Theory classes this past summer. Each week we studied and listened to music from a different pianist/composers. This added real-life understanding of the composers, as opposed to data and factual information from standard reference sources. After the summer classes were over, I gave copies of this book to each student as a gift. The composers came alive for them, and they learned about them in a personal way.

Like Shakespeare, J.S. Bach is known largely by his works. Peter Williams asks many questions in this examination of the man as well as the composer. What was Bach like as a youth, father, and, eventually, church elder? What music did he know and how did he compose and perform such an amazing amount? Ultimately, Williams questions the effects of unremitting acclaim on objective evaluations of J.S. Bach.

    Book Description

The early music of Claude Debussy was influenced by the work of Wagner, for whom he had great admiration. However, soon Debussy's music became more experimental and individualistic, as is clear in his first mature work Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Debussy quickly moved away from traditional techniques and produced the pictures in sound that led his work to be described as "musical Impressionism." This new biography--the first in English in 30 years--offers new insights into the life of this enigmatic composer, revealing a figure more seminal and revolutionary than previously thought.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Too Concise, Dry and Dull.......2003-10-20

This is unfortunately, a 'too' concise biography of Debussy which never really gives a sense of what the man was like, or the impact of his music on the twentieth century. A disappointment after a good experience with another book in the Cambridge music series.

2 out of 5 stars too short for such a major musical figure.......2001-01-14

It is unfortunate that there is not more available on Debussy in English. This book, at only 167 pages (including pictures) hardly does him justice. Because it is so short, the book jumps from topic to topic at an alarming pace, hardly giving any details. The author's convoluted writing style does not help matters either. Unlike many other musical (or otherwise) biographies I've read, this one did not leave me satisfied. Hopefully the out-of-print book department will have something more complete on Debussy.

    4 out of 5 stars Depressed Composer.......2000-06-30

    C. Debussy seems to have led a tortured and beleaguered life. His ideas regarding music were in conflict with the French music establishment. This created problems for him both professionally and personally. Financially, he struggled all of his life. Coming from rather humble beginnings, C. Debussy had a particular vision of music early in his career. He was blunt and identified with the impressionistic painters as well as the symbolist poets. These artists were to become popular much later. Debussy died young at the age of 55 of cancer. This biography is a little choppy in it writing style, but it does offer many examples of his ideas on many subjects.

Yeah, well I gave it as a gift once too. Then I read the gift and learned that it wasn't the gift I intended. Sorry if that sounds garbled, but the long and short of it is: this isn't the book Alan Jay Lerner originally published. Much of that (great) book, including some of its very best parts, has been extracted. The thing that really gets me, though, is that this paperback version's inside flap claims it is "unabridged"! HOW can they get away with this?

5 out of 5 stars The great lyricist also a master of prose (not a surprise!)........2000-03-06

Alan J. Lerner/and his collaborations with Fritz Lowe and Burton Lane are miracles of the 20th century. The circumstances of their coming together in an artistic and social mileux that called for--no yearned for that kind of musical theater--is a story in itself.

Mr. Lerner talks eloquently about these collaborators-and others (some not so succesful), and gives us complete and insightful discussions about the shows for which he has written the lyrics--"just" productions like "My Fair Lady," "Gigi," "Camelot," and others perhaps not as well known.

Mr. Lerner also discusses his own life with great candor--and even greater wit.

This book is an absolute must-have for those interested in The American Musical Theater! I have given it several times as a gift.

    5 out of 5 stars a superior memoir.......1999-10-16

This is a witty (if occasionally slaphappy), literate, and very readable (difficult to put down) account of the making of three musicals. I doubt, however, that persons not especially interested in the theatre will want to read this. Note also that this is not a conventional autobiography like, say, Richard Rodgers's "Musical Stages": it concerns the circumstances of the author's life only peripherally.

Also recommended: Craig Zadan's "Sondheim & Company" and, for musicians, Jeff Burns's "Pentatonic Scales for the Jazz Rock Keyboardist".

    5 out of 5 stars Interesting reading!.......1999-09-21

I'm reading this book, I love it! Because it's easy to read it and enjoyable! If you want to know the three great musical such like: "My Fair Lady" and "Gigi" and "Camelot", you must read this book! I love it!

5 out of 5 stars The man can write!.......1998-05-27

Unlike many theater or Hollywood figures who write their own life stories, Alan Jay Lerner can actually organize and clearly articulate the events of his life! Even if you are not a lover of the Broadway theater or Hollywood, I recommend that you get the book purely for the pleasure of reading his prose! I have been searching for this book ever since I read a library edition of it years ago. I am more than overjoyed that they have finally reprinted it!

I brought this book and read it from cover to cover a number of years back and I continually pick it up to check the facts. The book has a wealth of information about the live performances of the Beatles from 1957 to the last live performance on the 29th August 1966 at The Candlestick Park San Francisco. It details what songs were played and who sang the lead vocal. A breif history of the period under review. Remember Beatlemaina in Adelaide back in 1964 where more than 300,000 fans lined the streets to see their heros. Its all descibed here. This is a must have book and despite being able to have some of this book reproduced in Mark Lewisohn's The Complete Beatles Chronicles, you still need this book. Its worth the search for it.

If you like Social D, then you probablt already have this, but if not, its worth buying just for "Prison Bound." The recording and instrumentation far exceeds the original. Great album!

    Book Description

This beginner's guide to the basics of live concert sound mixing and mic techniques is written by industry vet Jerry Slone, whose baptism-by-fire road experiences will teach you need-to-know stuff they simply don't teach in school! It provides easy-to-understand coverage aimed at the novice on topics such as: sound and hearing; microphone models, specs and techniques; mixers; equalization; amplifiers; speakers; the audio chain; schools and universities for continuing education; and much more. Ever since talent show appearances in his pre-teen years, Jerry Slone's been the guy who got stuck hooking up the PA and trying to tweak it to make it sound better. After graduating from the Recording Industry program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), he road-managed and mixed house audio for a touring band. Today, he works with acts signed to major labels.

1 out of 5 stars Not much there........2004-08-30

This book is a waste of time. What a disappointment. I've been doing live sound for years, and am interested in tips on how to improve. The advice in this book is so basic and general as to be useless. Talk to others, Slone recommends. Duh. There are a couple tips on mic placement worth thinking about (how to mic a guitar amp to get various tonal qualities). Not much else for anyone with any experience at all.

Could this be targeted for the rank beginner? If so, it fails there as well. One might expect that this book would run through the basics of how to hook up a sound system. What cable plugs in where? But it doesn't. If you're a beginner, you're just as clueless after reading this as if you'd never picked it up. Heck, you might even be more confused.

No desctiptions of what all those gadgets in the rack are and how to use them.

I feel bad about being so negative, and I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings - but this book is quite worthless.
