Book Description

Millions of people around the world know Chuck Norris as the star of more than 20 motion pictures, including "Delta Force," "Missing in Action," and "Return of the Dragon." Millions more know him as a martial arts expert, the only man in the Western Hemisphere to hold an 8th degree Black Belt Grand Master in Tae Kwon Do. And then there are others who know him from his eight seasons on CBS's longest running series, "Walker, Texas Ranger."

What many don't know is that Chuck Norris is a sincere Christian—a man whose faith plays a role in everything he does. Against All Odds is an inspirational story of how Norris overcame abject poverty from childhood, the effects of his father's alcoholism and desertion of the family, and his own shyness and lack of strength and ability early in his life. Norris writes candidly about how he was able to overcome such obstacles in his life—giving full credit to God.

"Against All Odds" is an inspirational and very enjoyable book! It's full of many interesting stories and therefore, it's very easy to read. Chuck Norris' story is motivation to everyone to set goals, visualize the goals and work hard to achieve them. His career makes for a great story, especially hearing about his supportive mother who always told him: "God has plans for you". She was right! The book is full of many celebrity stories, too! From Bruce Lee to Johnny Carson to Bob Barker and Steve McQueen. I wish the book was longer. I hated to see it end. Also, Chuck shares his religious beliefs and his wonderful marriage and children. I have written down his quote: "Positive thinking gets positive results and negative thinking gets negative results". Chuck Norris is a very positive and inspiring person! I highly recommend this great book! You'll love it!

Great bio. I usually don't read bios, but made an exception for Chuck Norris and for Barry Manilow. Also read Doreen Virtue's bio because it was included in one of her angel books.

That said, Chuck's bio is about overcoming obstacles and helping to make the world a better place. I wanted to read his story because I have always liked his movies and got really into the "Walker Texas Ranger" series. I really liked the positive aspects and messages, and the included spiritualism, in the series. I also liked the way the show included respect for and appreciation of the path and knowledge of the American Indian.

Chuck's bio was very interesting and uplifting and included his beginnings through the fairly current times. There are also old through current photos. It's great to read about a celeb that has his head on straight when you see so much tabloid stuff in the supermarkets. It's also great to read about somebody who moves forward in a positive manner to 1)accomplish things, and 2)help others. (No, I don't buy the tabloids anymore, but you cannot help to see the headlines when you're in line to buy your crabmeat in Maryland.)In my opinion, celebs have a big responsibility to the people who look to them as role models, especially the younger people. I am always happy to see a celeb show a positive image to those who would be influenced by him/her.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational for anyone who reads this book.......2006-12-28

I find Chuck Norris's story amazing because no matter what anyone else said he worked towards and achieved his goals. An interesting concept of this is how he always shows respect and a smile on his face to everyone he meets, even people who scower at him.

He does this because its a proven fact that if you fight someone's negative attitude with more negativity, nothing will get solved and most likely there will be arguments or maybe even fights. This is one of the many lessons you can learn out of this book, go buy it today. I knew I could learn something out of it and I have learned a lot. I'm glad I bought this book.

Book Description

The first incendiary collection of stencils and graffiti from Banksy, presented and bound in a handy pocket sized high quality format. Rarely have art and politics been put to such fine, and overtly public, use. Mix the irony and juxtaposition of John Yates with the beauty of the finest aerosol art, and you'll have some idea of how good this really is. The reproductions are interspersed with an excellent array of quotes, statements, letters and a beginners guide to painting with stencils. Very, very good.

This little book is fantastic. It's pretty short but packed. Definitely pick it up if you find it for a decent price and are interested in street art/Banksy. I bought mine here about 2 years ago for maybe $20 and now I see it's selling for $200 here and going for $100 on eBay at the moment. Madness! Guess I should have picked up more..

5 out of 5 stars Great little review of Banksy's work.......2007-01-05

This book is a wonderful and witty review of Bansky's work written by the artist himself. I also highly recommend "Cut It Out." Both books are somewhat hard to find, but can be purchased here on Amazon or for reasonable prices at another great design book website, You Work for Them. Bansky's hardcover book, "Wall and Piece" is another must have. Cheers!

Book Description

In his fascinating last book, Edward Said looks at a selection of essays, poems, novels, films, and operas to determine what late style may explain about the evolution of the creative life. He discusses how the approaching death of an artist can make its way “with anachronism and anomaly” into his work, as was the case in the late work of Thomas Mann, Richard Strauss, Jean Genet, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, and C. P. Cavafy. Said examines Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Genet’s Le captif amoureux and Les paravents, Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Visconti’s film of Lampedusa’s The Leopard, Euripides’ The Bacchae and Iphigenia at Aulis, and Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice, among other works.

He points out that one can also find an “unearthly serenity,” in last works, for example, in Sophocles, Shakespeare, Rembrandt, Matisse, Bach, and Wagner, which, as Said puts it, “crown a lifetime of aesthetic endeavor.” But in On Late Style he concentrates on artistic lateness as “intransigence, difficulty, and unresolved contradiction.” He also writes about Theodor Adorno and about Glenn Gould, who chose to stop performing, thereby creating his own form of lateness. Said makes clear that most of the works discussed are rife with deep conflict and an almost impenetrable complexity. In fact, he feels that lateness is often “a form of exile.” These works frequently stood in direct contrast to what was popular at the time, but they were forerunners of what was to come in each artist’s particular discipline—works of true genius.

Eloquent and impassioned, brilliantly reasoned and revelatory, On Late Style is Edward Said’s own great last work.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Late Style Said.......2007-06-18

Edward Said's writings never aim to make the obvious observation but instead seek to discover underlying strands of ideas that buoy up the work at hand and reveal subterranean layers of meaning. When he accomplishes this, his writings brim with the enthusiasm of a new discovery or the pleasure of understanding a familiar work in an unfamiliar way.

The cost to the reader not infrequently consists of wading through thickets of inpenetrable prose, prose that needs be hacked at to decipher the meaning intended. This necessity may be exacerbated in this collection by the fact that it was left unfinished and unpolished at his death. Nonetheless, skill in reading Theory and the jargon that attends it is required to comprehend, not to say appreciate, much of the early chapters. Happily much of this falls away as the book proceeds and many pearls are revealed undisguised and in fascinating verbal settings.

I continued to have difficulties with much of the entire enterprise: to wit, are Mozart's late operas really "late style" considering the man died so young? Surely they became "late style" by way of premature mortality alone. Extrapolating late style from one book wonders such as Di Lampedusa also stretches the point.

And yet incomplete, impenetrable and, as always, arguable Said, paradoxical as it sounds, remains more intellectually stimulating than most comparable critics, and still repays the effort it takes to read him.

Book Description

The conflict between National Socialism and Ernst Barlach, one of the important sculptors of the twentieth century, is an unusual episode in the history of Hitler's efforts to rid Germany of 'international modernism.' Barlach did not passively accept the destruction of his sculptures, but protested the injustice, and continued his work. Peter Paret's discussion of Barlach's art and struggle over creative freedom, is joined to an analysis of Barlach's opponents. Hitler's rejection of modernism, often dismissed as absurd ranting, is instead interpreted as a internally consistent and politically effective critique of liberal Western culture. That some radical national socialists nevertheless advocated a 'nordic modernism' and tried to win Barlach over, indicates the cultural cross-currents running through the early years of the Third Reich. Paret's closely focused study of an artist in a time of crisis seamlessly combines the history of modern Germany and the history of modern art. Peter Paret is Mellon Professor in the Humanities Emeritus of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and Spruance Professor Emeritus at Stanford University. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society, which awarded him the Thomas Jefferson Medal and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The German government has awarded him the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit. His other works include, German Encounters with Modernism, 1840-1945 (Cambridge, 2001), Imagined Battles: Reflections of War in European Art (Univ, of NC, 1997), The Berlin Secession: Modernism and its Enemies in Imperial Germany (Harvard, 1989), and Clausewitz and the State (Oxford, 1985).

Chuck Norris is undoubtedly a stright shooter of high moral character.
It would have been more interesting if he had gone into more detail about his life from childhood to when he started with the martial arts. Bottom line, I did enjoy the book.

    5 out of 5 stars Chuck Norris - a man to emulate!.......2007-01-09

This is the story of Chuck Norris. I really enjoyed it and wish everyone would read it. Many know that Chuck was a 6 time undefeated professional world champion of Karate. Many have seem the movies he has made. Most people have seen his TV series, "Walker, Texas Ranger." But other than that we know little of who he really is. Chuck Norris is one of the more down to earth Hollywood types who has had his share of ups and downs.

His story chronicles his life and shows how he dealt with the things that have faced him and his family. Like all of us, he has failed at times. Like all of us, he wishes that he had done somethings differently.

Chucks faith in Christ is evident throughout the book. Yet he doesn't hammer us with it. Many of the projects that were started through Chuck's desire to help people are a direct result of his faith in Christ.

"Against All Odds: My Story," by Chuck Norris is a very engaging book that you will enjoy and find hard to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Great documentary on the art of Chainsaw Carving.......2007-01-12

Jessie Groeschen does an excellent job documenting chainsaw carving from the "Founding Fathers" (and Mothers) to modern day artists. She also includes summaries of some of the more prestigious events in this relatively unknown form of artwork. The biographies also include a plethora of pictures of each artist's works. To top it off the author provides a step by step pictorial to create your own chainsaw art. It would be a great coffee table book for chainsaw enthusiasts, art enthusiasts, and/or Pacific Northwest culture enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous overview of the field.......2006-01-13

I'm very happy to have this book, to show people who come to see my carvings, to inspire me, and to reinforce the idea that there are as many approaches to carving as there are carvers, and only a few of them involve bears.
The book is excellently produced, with great photos and entertaining text. I have met some of the carvers featured, and it's good to know more of their history and approach to carving.
For the record, there's one step-by-step in the book; Jessie showing how to carve a chair. If you want to learn how to carve, there are other books. But if you want to know why we carve, this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars From a Collector of Chainsaw Art.......2005-12-17

I am a collector of chainsaw art. My first purchase was back in 1986. I feel I can't have enough carvings. I even own a few pieces by a couple people featured in this book. Knowing some of their story makes it even more meaningful. I enjoyed the book and have it on our coffee table for others to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE ART OF CHAINSAW CARVING!!!.......2005-11-03

I read this book cover to cover and in my opinion, no other chainsaw carving book allows the reader to feel as though they know the carvers the way that this book does! Jessie does a GREAT job at having the reader identify with the top carvers of our time! I've personally been carving for about two years and through reading about all of the various artists journeys, it has helped me to realize that someday, if I continue to work hard, I could actually meet some of these wonderful people! Jessie has made it clear that if you work hard and believe in your art, that a dream can become a reality! Thanks Jessie! Steve Rager...

    Book Description

Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan- Bouveret (1852-1929) was among a group of the most creative students of Jean Leon Gérôme, the leading French academic painter of his day. A well-established naturalist painter and an artist acknowledged worldwide during the latter half of the nineteenth century, Dagnan-Bouveret used contemporary themes and techniques to modernize the academic tradition in an attempt to meet the aesthetic changes initiated by the impressionists. Displaying real diversity, he created photographically accurate compositions inspired by daily life. His best-known pieces were mesmerizing mystical-religious compositions. Accolades at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle and induction into the French Institute not only assured the status of his work, but also furthered his position as the upholder of the academic tradition at a time when it was coming under renewed attack by the modernists.

The publication of this book coincides with an exhibition by the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York City of Dagnan-Bouveret's work-the first in a century. Against the Modern pays special attention to the evolution of this artist's work, and brings to the public gaze the real diversity, accessibility-and surprising modernity-that has made Dagnan-Bouveret's work of lasting value.

Unless you're an avid fan of Cubist painting, you probably have never even heard of French painter Albert Gleizes (1881-1953), yet author Peter Brooke believes Gleizes to have been one of the 20th century's most important painters. Brooke's love and passionate respect of Gleizes's work has spurred him to write an intensely researched and well-written case on the magnitude of Gleizes's contributions to Cubism. In Albert Gleizes: For and Against the Twentieth Century are stories of the artist's life in France in the early 1900s, New York in the '20s, and his return to Europe in the '30s. Throughout are detailed analyses on the practice of Gleizes's painting, his movement from an early impressionistic style towards representational, and later nonrepresentational cubism. Gleizes's friends and fellow artists include such art-world luminaries as Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia.

From his early years as a member of an art/poetry collective, Gleizes questioned how art fit into society at large. Brooke explains that this collective, the Abbaye de Creteil, was named after an idea of Rabelais as a place of "refuge of honest, idealistic thinkers against a hostile world". How extremely and darkly troubling it then seems that along with his conscious questioning and awareness of his own place in society, Gleizes appears to bear a certain affinity for Germany and the Nazis during WWII. Brooke is uncertain of Gleizes's possible anti- Semitism, citing instances where Gleizes praises the Jews. It is an uncomfortable moment as Brooke confesses to the reader that while Gleizes never spoke in favor of any of the deportations in France, he never spoke out against them. Throughout everything, Brooke remains resolute in his commitment to Gleizes's artistic place in history. If you are a serious reader of art history or modern art, it will be a thesis that you won't want to miss. --J.P. Cohen

      Book Description

Few painters lived the intellectual adventures of the early twentieth century as intensely as Albert Gleizes. At the center of the public scandal over Cubism that broke out in Paris in 1911, he was with Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia in New York during the war and was one of the first European avant-garde artists to respond to the scale and vigor of New York life. Gleizes was also one of the few French painters of the 1920s to recognize non-representational painting as the logical development of Cubism. Gleizes' work as a painter is accompanied by an immense body of theoretical work, addressing the question posed so starkly by Duchamp and Picabia: why should we paint? What is the justification for the work of art? This fascinating book follows Gleizes' argument as it evolves, drawing on detailed analysis of works of art and both published and unpublished writings. It reveals Gleizes not just as a significant historical personality but as a man whose work and thinking remain astonishingly fresh and relevant to the needs of our own time.

5 out of 5 stars Portrait of a british colossus.......2001-08-31

Epstein is avant garde sculpture in England in the first quarter of the century with one sole accomplice, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (see Jim Ede's "Savage Messiah") and the position of "Rock-Drill" or his tomb for Oscar Wiled in Paris in its current form is unquestioned and honourably placed in any anthology of British art, his "doves" (commissioned by John Quinn of the NY Met), "Head of Romilly John", "Tommy", or "Maternity" are of clear and unquestionable importance, and his draughtsmanship from that period is outstandingly good.
Riding the crest of tribal art he aroused huge suspicion and great animosity leading to public commissions being tarred and feathered and the purchase of several of his major works (from the secondary market) by the waxworks king, Louis Tussauds, for a sort of shilling-a-time peep show in Blackpool for people who wanted to be shocked.
Because he was not formally innovative beyond this modernism (with roots in tribal art and contemporary machines) he is, rightly or wrongly, ignored by anthologers of 20th century art as a whole taking a clear 2nd place to Lipschitz and Laurens and the Cubist sculptors and, in England, and most gallingly to Epstein himself, Henry Moore.
Fortunately despite his periodic vilification in England he was given public commissions especially after WWII where the extensive building program gave plenty of opportunity and his work can be seen in Coventry Cathedral, Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff, The Trade Unions Congress War Memorial etc. This later work is a move away from the totem symbolism to expressionist figurative sculpture of a type, I would say, more convincing than Barlach and carving out a position easiest described as a sort of sculptural Lucien Freud.
Stephen Gardiner is described as being a hagiographer. This is true, he pins his colours very firmly to the wall. He is an Epstein partisan but wow he tells the story well and whatever you think of Epstein's art his life is a hell of a story with wives and mistresses coming and going, fellow artists (Augustus John, Henry Moore, Eric Gill, Matthew Smith) befriended and blasted with all the tact of Wyndham Lewis, with public praise and public villification, rags and riches too many times over etc.
Gardiner does not hide Epstein's callousness with friends and colleagues, even criticises him in dulcet tones (very ) occasionally such as E's "paranoia" about the veracity of Augustus John's friendship towards him, but on the whole he makes it perfectly clear that he thinks Epstein is a great genius and that this excuses everything. But This never prevents him from giving us the evidence to make up our own minds differently. And a biographer who was less passionate about Epstein would never have commanded the same wealth of detail and passion to sustain our interest unflaggingly through what is, in the end, a large biography about an artist who spent most of his time with his chisel and a large block of stone. Very juicy stuff.
