Book Description

General relativity has become one of the central pillars of theoretical physics, with important applications in both astrophysics and high-energy particle physics, and no modern theoretical physicist’s education should be regarded as complete without some study of the subject. This textbook, based on the author’s own undergraduate teaching, develops general relativity and its associated mathematics from a minimum of prerequisites, leading to a physical understanding of the theory in some depth. It reinforces this understanding by making a detailed study of the theory’s most important applications - neutron stars, black holes, gravitational waves, and cosmology - using the most up-to-date astronomical developments. The book is suitable for a one-year course for beginning graduate students or for undergraduates in physics who have studied special relativity, vector calculus, and electrostatics. Graduate students should be able to use the book selectively for half-year courses.

Nice introduction to GR. Not extensive previous knowledge needed and as clear as it could be.

5 out of 5 stars As the title says, a good 'First Course'.......2007-04-04

There are a lot of books on General Relativity. In approach they vary from no math, to essentially math books. This book is somewhere in the middle. It is said to be suitable for a one year course for beginning graduate students or for undergraduates in physics who have studied special relativity, vector calculus, and electrostatics.

To enable such a student to follow the math in in this book the first part of the book reviews special relativity and vector analysis. Then the book has a section on Tensor Analysis, which was newly developed in Einstein's time when it was called tensor calculus. The treatment of these mathematical concepts in this book are, in my mind, sufficient for a review for a student that had studied them before, but will require some pretty good insight for a student that had not seen them before. This background information covers about a third of the book.

Chapter 5 of the book starts out, 'Until now we have discussed only SR.' The next two thirds cover curvature, physics in a curved spacetime, the Einstein field equations, gravitational radiation (the biggest chapter in the book), and on to the rest of GR.

By the end of the book the student has indeed completed a 'first course' in GR. There is still plenty more to go for the interested student specializing in this area.

3 out of 5 stars Good Intro, but Leaves A LOT out.......2007-02-19

As background, I am a senior undergrad doing a thesis on black hole perturbations (following Chandrasekhar). This was the first book I got on GR, a little over a year ago, and I fell in love with it. It does a great job of quickly, though not completely painlessly, introducing you to GR. HOWEVER, as I now continue my ventures further, I find a lot of fundamental concepts lacking in my education. I went from this book onto parts of Wald: not a good idea IMO. I am currently paging through Lovelock and Rund and wishing the mathematical aspect had been introduced in Schutz as well as here. In the end, very nice, well explained intro to the concepts, but you NEED to either supplement with better mathematical explanation, or move quickly to higher book.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro text.......2007-01-14

I started reading this book at a friend's house about 1 year ago and after graduating and starting to miss physics, I decided to pick it up and try something I didn't get in school. This book does a great job of building a fundamental understand of what is going on(and doesn't shy away from the math). The best part is the different ways it can be read. It is written to leave a lot of the deep math(actually expanding the equations and seeing the results in a more concrete manner) to the reader's discretion. As a working person, this is a huge advantage, as it means I can read ahead to curvature while spending my weekends getting familiar with tensor math.

I highly suggest this as a start for anyone that wants to get a feel for GR(not a pop culture feel, but a real understanding of the ideas and math) but doesn't always have the time to work through the math. I also have the Misner, Thorne and Wheeler book Gravitation, and while it gives a much more expansive study of GR, I don't find myself with the time required to read it.

The only drawback is I feel it doesn't give the best intuition about tensors of a higher order than a one form. But that is probably due to my own lack of intuition in that area.

For clarity, My relevant background in physics and math:
ODE, PDE, Vector Calculus, Introductory Analysis and topology, QM, EM, Mechanics, Optics, Thermodynamics. I've never studied non-euclidean space or any real study of geometry beyond the most basic of real number line topology.

4 out of 5 stars undergraduate book.......2006-12-12

This book helped me survive my first course in general relativity, which I took at a time when I was not prepared to understand the textbook of the course (Wald). I have mixed feelings about the book. On the one hand, I could follow it is as an undergraduate; on the other, the level of the discussion was such that I never really felt like I "got" GR from reading it. Maybe that is the paradox of a low-level book, but for comparison I did not experience this reading, for example, griffiths and jackson. There, I felt like I grasped E&M and one level, and then learned it better at another. Perhaps general relativity doesn't work that way, or perhaps another introductory book is better. I don't really know which.

Book Description

In recent years the methods of modern differential geometry have become of considerable importance in theoretical physics and have found application in relativity and cosmology, high-energy physics and field theory, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and mechanics. This textbook provides an introduction to these methods - in particular Lie derivatives, Lie groups and differential forms - and covers their extensive applications to theoretical physics. The reader is assumed to have some familiarity with advanced calculus, linear algebra and a little elementary operator theory. The advanced physics undergraduate should therefore find the presentation quite accessible. This account will prove valuable for those with backgrounds in physics and applied mathematics who desire an introduction to the subject. Having studied the book, the reader will be able to comprehend research papers that use this mathematics and follow more advanced pure-mathematical expositions.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific geometry book for physicists.......2006-05-07

Advanced mathematics, such as differential geometry and topology, plays an important role in many areas of physics. This excellent book covers one of these topics, differential geometry. This is a topic essential for understanding general relativity and gauge theory. There are several good books aimed at physicists that cover differential geometry. While some of these have a broader scope than this book, nevertheless this book is my favorite one for differential geometry.

The topics covered include those necessary for reading advanced treatments of general relativity (such as Wald or Misner/Thorne/Wheeler). These include manifolds, fiber bundles, tangent/cotangent bundles, forms, Lie derivatives, Killing vectors and Lie groups.

Following this basic material a chapter covering some applications to physics, one example is electromagnetism. Up to this point the consideration of manifolds had been fairly general. In the final chapter the implications of adding a connection, and then a metric, are considered.

Why do I think this book is so good? It's not the breadth of material covered, this book is very focused on a limited range of material. It's the quality of the presentation for what it does cover. The development follows a logical order, the writing is exceptionally clear and the diagrams are very useful since Schutz explains them so well.

3 out of 5 stars Integrability conditions discussed.......2004-01-21

Written in a attractive and even seductive way, relying more on Lie algebraic language than is typical, this book is probably as stimulating an intro. to modern geometry as you can find, within certain limits. The section on noncoordinate bases might have been more clearly written, however. Frobenius's theorm is discussed, something that Fomenko et al should have covered, and the section on connections can be worked throuigh independently of the heavy machinery of exterior differential forms, which is attractive for physics students.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as "a first course in general relativity".......2001-10-23

I had read first the "first course in general relativity"and was exited,so i fygured out that this book from the same author would reach the same standards, but it didnt. If Ihadnt read the first book from Schutz this book would be incomprenheceble. The greatest problem i think is the lack of exercices.Without them you cant really go anywhere.Another problem ,i believe,is the short space given to analyzeeach topic.Eventhough i understand tensor calculus very well I just cant get anywhere with the differential forms.
Eventhough its not the worst book out there its not the best either. My advise, buy a better book.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Accessible Book ! Buy It !.......2000-11-06

This is a very enjoyable and clearly written book. From a physics point of view the approach is rather abstract, so although differential geometry is developed from 'scratch', it is probably better to have studied a more elementary text on the theory of 2-surfaces in 3-space first (eg Faber's book Differential Geometry and Relativity Theory ). The first chapter sets the mathematical background expected of the reader. The rudiments of analysis, topology, calculus of many variables and basic linear algebra is reviewed. The ensuing chapters cover differential geometry from a 'modern' viewpoint but the style is quite relaxed and the links to 'co-ordinate approach' are well explained. The exercises concentrate on the abstract approach. Throughout the book the underlying structure of manifolds is concentrated upon. No extra 'structure' eg connections and 'distance' concepts are added until the final chapter on Riemannian spaces. For example the metric tensor throughout the body of the book is merely used as a map between a tangent space and its dual space. It is only used as a 'distance' operator in the final chapter. For the purposes of independent study this is a sound book, there are hints and partial solutions for many of the exercises, which is always a welcome feature for those studying entirely on their own.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Diff. Geometry.......2000-08-08

This book presents the basic concepts of differential geometry in a clear, concise manner using modern notation. Schutz's writing style is very readable and there is a considerable breadth of coverage. In areas where one might wish for greater depth, Schutz provides excellent references. My only regret is that the physical applications chapters weren't longer. An excellent starter book and a good quick reference if you continue in differential geometry, GR or field theory.

Book Description

Separated from the mainland of Africa for 160 million years, Madagascar has evolved an incredible wealth of biodiversity, with thousands of species that can be found nowhere else on earth. For instance, of its estimated 12,000 plant species, nearly 10,000 are unique to Madagascar. Malagasy animals are just as spectacular, from its almost forty currently recognized species of lemurs—a primate group found only here—to the numerous species of tiny dwarf chameleons. With astounding frequency scientists discover a previously unknown species in Madagascar—and at almost the same rate another natural area of habitat is degraded or destroyed, a combination that recently led conservation organizations to name Madagascar one of the most important and threatened conservation priorities on the planet.

The Natural History of Madagascar provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date synthesis available of this island nation's priceless biological treasures. Contributions by nearly three hundred world-renowned experts cover the history of scientific exploration in Madagascar, its geology and soils, climate, forest ecology, human ecology, marine and coastal ecosystems, plants, invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Detailed discussions of conservation efforts in Madagascar highlight several successful park reserve programs that could serve as models for other areas. Beautifully illustrated throughout, the book includes over one hundred color illustrations, with fifty color photos by nature photographer Harald Schütz, as well as more than three hundred black-and-white photographs and line drawings.

The Natural History of Madagascar will be the invaluable reference for anyone interested in the Malagasy environment, from biologists and conservationists to policymakers and ecotourists.

5 out of 5 stars The Natural History of Madagascar. Goodman & Bensted eds........2007-06-26

This weighty volume is an edited collection of scientific papers about the natural history of the island of Madagascar- how Madagascar came to be separated from Africa; its fossil record and relationship to existing forms of plant and animal life, most specifically the unique lemurs; its landforms, climatic, and biological zones, etc. Having just returned from two week visit there, in three different areas of country, I can say that I wish I had read more of this book beforehand! I found the parts of Chapter 2 dealing with why Madagascar has such a unique collection of endemic plants and animals especially enlightening and surprising. I happen to be a marine biologist/ecologist professionally and was not put off by the specialized technical terms used by paleontologists, botanists, geologists, and so forth, but I don't think a well read lay reader will be much troubled by them either. This volume is not a guide book, however, but it is amply illustrated to demonstrate particular points. I doubt there is another single source of so much state of the art information about this extraordinary island.

Book Description

This remarkable volume is the most comprehensive examination to date of the art and architecture of European monasteries, featuring an authoritative text and more than five hundred stunning, full-color photographs.

European cultural history is inextricably linked to the presence of monasteries, especially during the Middle Ages. In addition to serving as religious refuges, monasteries provided sanctuary for the pursuits of art, education, science, and book production. This lavishly illustrated book traces the development of the art and architecture of these important buildings, from early Carolingian examples in the eighth century to a modern structure by Le Corbusier in 1960.

This unsurpassed survey offers a fresh chronicle of a largely overlooked subject and hundreds of marvelous images, many of them newly photographed, of more than 150 of the most interesting and best preserved monasteries in Spain, Portugal, France, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Italy--all of which are accessible to visitors. Here are unique views of the art and architecture of such treasured places as Mont St. Michel, a wondrous Benedictine sanctuary off the coast of Brittany, and the fabled pilgrimage site in Assisi founded by St. Francis.

In an insightful text the author describes the cultural heritage of each of the monasteries portrayed and provides an introduction to monasticism and to the various orders dating from the early Christian era to the present. In addition, the volume offers plans of the sites, a glossary, and a bibliography. Historians and collectors of great books of art history will be intrigued by this unsurpassed collection of photographs and fascinating account of the artistic glory of European monasteries.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-10-06

This is the best art book I have bought in a long time. The photographs are superb, perfectly framed and perfectly lit; and the monasteries, especially the mediaeval monasteries of the Iberian peninsula, and those of the baroque period, are absolutely breathtaking. Everything in color and full page - large, large pages! The only regret is that it leaves you wanting many more images of each monastery, but with the size of the book, this would have required six volumes. That being the case, I would buy each and every volume if it maintained this visual standard. The text was informative, although again necessarily limited given the scope of the work. A wonderful, wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars An Elegant Tome.......2007-03-04

This book is not only an informative and carefully researched volume, but is also a fine addition to the coffee table. Each monastery is photographed either as a general view or some wonderful detail area is chosen and shown in its beauty. Not only a collection of handsome photos, the book contains thoughfully written descriptions and stories of the monasteries- to the point, yet interesing.

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures.......2007-01-10

The book has lots of good pictures. Excellent presentation and selection (altough I would exclude some minor monasteries and include others, like Mafra, Montserrat and Guadalupe). The only complaint I have is in regards of the short explanations of some monasteries.

5 out of 5 stars A Virtual Monastic journey........2005-09-15

Lots of beautiful and new photos of old cloisters: consisting in good panaromic views and details. Well presented with a brief history of Europe and brief theological explantions of monastic life. Descriptions are simple and short enough for the off-hand reader. The book is huge and heavy; more for desk reading rather than in bed.But it served my purpose of historico-monastic information blended with architectural purposes.

Book Description

What makes a company great? After all, management trends come and go. Economic conditions fluctuate and market demands shift. Corporations re-structure and new owners take over. The one constant, the one enduring truth, is that people define the character of a company. They always have and always will. Motivated, passionate people make the difference between ho-hum mediocrity and extraordinary performance. That’s the message from Peter W. Schutz, former CEO of Porsche AG and author of this new book. Schutz explains that people are the heart and soul of any business. In The Driving Force, he shares a wealth of insights he learned throughout his career that relate to the successful management of people.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good primer for working effectively with people.......2007-03-08

I feel that Peter Schutz has some unique insights to offer on working effectively with people. The book has a narrative style that I found pleasant to read and the style worked nicely with the points that Peter made. I felt the book was more that worth the small investment in time and money to purchase and read. He has had several interesting positions through out his career including his time at Porsche. He's also had some great mentors and coworkers that helped him through some of the tougher times. I could relate to his early engineering background. I did find myself wondering at times when he was going to cut to the chase, but felt he effectively used the intro stories to help bring home his points. I found his business experiences with the very powerful unions in Germany at Porsche to be very interesting. I've already tried his method of how decisions must be made and how they have to be implemented to be effective and he's right. I've also paid attention to his different methods of management, authority and control noted in the book and it definitely makes a difference in the way people respond. I didn't realize till purchasing the book that he now works as a consultant and speaker to help with management/work issues.

5 out of 5 stars Driving Force is right on target!.......2007-01-11

Driving Force is an amazing book by Peter Schulz. Everyone aspiring to be a manager or is a manager should read this book.I read this book in three sittings. Peter is down to earth and wants to share his experiences to the world. He is a proven business leader and his writings come across with boldneess and clarity.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Drummer.......2006-04-11

I found The Driving Force to be both delightfully engaging as biography and sanely instructive in its discussion of matters relating to business. Mr. Schutz writes in a direct and self-effacing manner, with both wit and conviction; his stories often having the character of parables in that the "lessons" they contain would seem not only applicable to business but to other areas of human interaction and decision making as well. His are not views commonly held, or practiced, by most of today's MBA trained business leaders but, given their many failures and Mr. Schutz's documented successes, perhaps should be. For those interested in management skills, a fascinating history of Porsche's return, and triumph, both in racing and business, or just a good story well told by a man whose own life seems itself to have been a most "extraordinary" journey, I would recommend this book most highly.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Schutz is very very good!.......2003-05-22

I read this book in two sittings. He did not write this book out of a desire for fortune or fame. He has plenty of both. He wrote this book out of a desire to humbly share some of the things he has learned, and is on point. His focus on accountability, values, and the workers and customers is very similar to some of our other current business heros, such as Herb Kelleher and Michael Dell. This is a must read for any manager, executive, or leader. Or anyone who aspires to something better.

I have read probably 100 books on management/leadership, and this is in the top five.

Book Description

This book provides an accessible introduction to astronomy and general relativity, aiming to explain the Universe, not just to describe it. Written by an expert in relativity who is known for his clearly-written advanced textbooks, the treatment uses only high-school level mathematics, supplemented by optional computer programs, to explain the laws of physics governing gravity from Galileo and Newton to Einstein.

5 out of 5 stars A real treasure.......2006-08-03

How many authors of popular science books begin their books by boasting that they can teach real science to readers who have no math--or no math beyond basic algebra? And then what do you get? Either a tub full of metaphors sloshing about promiscuously or else a math course so compressed it would leave Newton saying, "Duh?" But not in this book. Bernard Schutz takes the reader by the hand and leads him gently on. There is scarcely a bump in the road; yet, by the end of the book, you've not only learned a good deal of physics, astrophysics and cosmology, you've also gotten an inkling of how a physicist thinks. How does Schutz manage to succeed where failure is the rule? Well, partly by magic, I think. But partly by the clever use of simple computer simulations (downloadable for free) and partly by means of a very carefully thought out pedagogical strategy. This gentleman is a teacher par excellence. If you're only going to read one science book in your life, read this one. Just be prepared to spend some time with it.

5 out of 5 stars This book makes me happy.......2005-05-07

I wanted to understand relativity, and tried many books. Up to know i met two kinds of books, the ones which i could not understand because they are to difficult, and the ones with a minimum of math, which are incomplete and oversimplified. I did not understand everything (e,g the Einstein equation and tensors) but most of this book gives me a deep insight in the beauty of relativity, cosmology and astronomy in a way no other book has done.

5 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect.......2004-11-01

This is possibly the best book i own. The book basically covers "all" the important topics in gravity, cosmology and astrophysics. For example equivalence principle, general relativity, gravitational waves, neutron stars, black holes, even a bit of quantum gravity (especially in last chapter) etc etc.

Though i must warn that anyone who reads this book might accidentally turn into a theoretical physicist. Its that fascinating/exciting really and it really makes one feel that this is a special time in theoretical physics (waiting for quantum gravity and new astronomical observations and theories). In this respect it is somewhat similar to popular books.

But i wouldnt call this a popular science book, since it goes deeper into things. For example i have Schutz's "First course in general relativity" and i think that up to the chapter on Einstein's equation it is easier than this. The reason is probably that this book doesnt use explicit calculus (well in a way it does with finite differences) or tensors; for example the chapter dealing with differential geometry and general relativity was pretty difficult to understand without tensors, but it gives very nice intuitive understanding for differential geometry/general relativity. There were other places were i understood something i havent really ever understood but was well explained here. All in all, this is an excellent book on gravity and cosmology and i recommend it to anyone.

Book Description

This first book of Dana Schutz's paintings is just catching up with her rave reviews--the New York Times said one recent show was "outstanding," and Artforum agreed, "far greater than the sum of its parts." Schutz's ecstatically imaginative work, executed in a vibrant, subjective palette, has made an impact since she began exhibiting five years ago. Paintings 2002 - 2005 features significant examples of the bodies of work that constitute her oeuvre to date, including the fictitious narrative Frank from Observation, as well as Self-Eaters, which revolves around making and remaking, plus works depicting the construction and destruction of imaginary societies, and paintings of musicians. One undercurrent explored is Schutz's captivating investigation of the artist's role as creator, and hence the relationship between the maker and the made. Another is her tendency to make open-ended references to a vast pool of stylistic and art-historical sources.

I just had the opportunity to glance through this book at a gallery where 20 or so of Dana's paintings are hanging. The reproductions are good quality, although Dana's coloration is hard to mimick. Some of the reds looked too red, but otherwise quite a stellar collection--humorous, poignant, original and artsy in a very fresh way. Dana is a rising star.

5 out of 5 stars Solomon's Sword.......2004-09-17

"This book offers comprehensive guidance on conducting custody evaluations that will help mental health practitioners provide responsible, thorough, and insightful assessments of child custody issues and ensure that the child's true needs are fairly represented in court.

The authors describe step-by-step how to go through all phases of an effective evaluation--from setting up the initial agreement for performing the evaluation to organizing the results in a final written report. They present specific information-gathering strategies to ensure that assessments are grounded in fact and not simply based on personal judgement. They show, for example, how to conduct interviews and administer questionnaires that will ilicit insightful information, and they identify the types of child-parent behaviors and interactions to look for during interviews, direct observations, and home visits.

They describe how to assess these findings and present them to judges and lawyers in a report that is concise and unbiased. And they discuss how to defend the evaluation in court, explaining how to handle a range of common problems faced by expert witnesses, such as challenges by opposing attorneys. They provide a variety of special materials that will help mental health practitioners in every phase of the evaluation process--including an overview of child custody practices in all fifty states, sample written evaluation, a procedural checklist on performing evaluations, and more." --From the inside cover of Solomon's Sword.

    Book Description

Alfred Schutz (1899-1959) stood simultaneously in the camps of philosophy and sociology, and his writings constitute the framework of a sociology based on phenomenological considerations. Schutz's basic contributions issue from a critical synthesis of Husserl's phenomenology and Weber's sociology of understanding. He proceeds on the basis of the irreducible souce of all human knowledge in the immediate experiences of the conscious, alert, and active individual. In this volume Helmut Wagner has selected and skillfully correlated various passages both from Schutz's book The Phenomenology of the Social World and from his scattered papers and essays.
