Book Description
This book is a landmark in the historical literature of Tibet composed by a well known scholar and translator Gos lo-tsa-ba-gZon-nu dpal (1391-1481 A.D.). It is the main source of information for all later historical compilations in the "Land of Snows". This work is invaluable inasmuch as it establishes a firm chronology of events of Tibetan history and works out in detail the list of the name of famous religious teachers and their spiritual lineage.

notice re: review of Sept. 13th, 1999.......1999-10-31
There are a number of misleading comments in the September 13, 1999 review from "A reader from Southern Vermont." For what it's worth: the *Blue Annals* is, in fact, a fine translation by Mr. Roerich of an extremely important Tibetan historical text by the renowned Tibetan historian `Gos lo-tsaa-ba gZhon-nu-dpal. The Tibetan text translated here is known as the *Deb-ther sngon-po*; it dates from the late 15th century. Roerich's translation is from 1946. I have not examined the 1988 reprint, but if it conforms to the previous edition, there is not (indeed there could not be, given the dates) any information whatsoever about "the Chinese takeover of Tibet, the genocide of the Tibetan people and the attempted eradication of the Buddhist tradition in the 1950's" in this work. For a very detailed (and fortunately still in print) treatment of post-1950 Tibetan history, the reader should see M. Goldstein, *A History of Modern Tibet, 1913-1951 : The Demise of the Lamaist State*.
Very comprehensive history of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism.......1999-09-14
This comprehensive work of Mr. Roerich includes the introduction of Buddhism in the 8th Century to Tibet, as well as some history of the earlier period of "kings" and the Bon religion. The author explains how the influx of Buddhism came mainly from India with some Chinese culture mixed in with the Bon religion. Though thorough Mr. Roerich's writing style is very scholarly rather than literary and could be called somewhat dry. The lineages of the major sects of Tibetan Buddhism are traced from the first teacher of each sect to the next and the next to the near present or current "holders of the faith" of each line. The author tells how the written form of Tibetan was instituted to translate texts from the Indian treasury of the Buddhist canon. Many pilgramages were undertaken by Tibetans to the centers of Buddhism in India right up until these centers of learning were destroyed by the Mogal invasions of the 11th and 12th centuries. The Blue Annals is very complete in describing a huge amount of history up until the time of the Chinese takeover of Tibet, the genocide of the Tibetan people and the attempted eradication of the Buddhist tradition in the 1950's.
Book Description
Suppose we awoke one morning to discover glorious artwork surrounding us. Paintings on billboards, our highways, in airports, malls, streets, offices, buses, schools, hospitals and jails. Wayfarers: The Spiritual Journeys of Nicholas & Helena Roerich, is the true story of two Russian artists who recommended art as the approach to peace.
Afraid Nicholas would lose his artistic freedom, the couple fled the Bolshevik Revolution and come to New York in 1920. Charismatic Nicholas Roerich, who produced over 7,000 paintings and his mystical wife, Helena, author of the Agni Yoga series, also believed education was necessary and built a 27-story skyscraper, the first school to teach all of the arts under one roof. It attracted Marsden Hartley, Rockwell Kent, Deems Taylor, and many other American artists.
From 1924-28, the couple courageously crossed the remote and dangerous regions of India and Asia searching for signs of the sacred Buddhist site, Shambhala, for Maitreya (the coming Buddha), whose presence would signal the New Era of peace, and for the support to establish a Buddhist spiritual country around Siberia. Six years after this effort failed, President Franklin D. Roosevelt funded a second try.
Wayfarers is the first book in English to tell this long-hidden story of Buddhist history and interweave the Roerich's spiritual teachings with their fascinating travels. Book contains 2 maps, 44 photos, and 11 color plates of Roerich's paintings from museums in the United States, India and Russia.

Illuminating view of the Roerichs.......2004-04-27
The author worked for 15 years on this book, and her hard work has paid off with a beautiful and inspiring work. Her dedication and devotion is apparent on every page. The book is not only filled with fascinating information, but is also so beautifully written it pulls you right along. Inspiring and uplifting. It clarifies a lot about the Roerichs and gave an intimate portrait of the family and their struggles and joys. I particularly appreciated the forthright way the author writes about the Masters - without sentiment and with great respect.
The book is essential for anyone interested in Agni Yoga or Nicholas and Helena Roerich.
Spiritual Nourishment.......2004-03-30
I found this a fascinating book - I couldn't put it down!
Ruth Drayer has provided an invaluable service by bringing light to bear on several areas of the Roerich's life hitherto somewhat hidden or obscured.
Wayfarers - the clue is in the title. There are a few books on either Nicholas or Helena Roerich separately in print in the English language but this book, for the first time, deals with both of their lives together. Fascinating lives lived to the maximum along the spiritual Path.
Their Russian compatriot Helena Petrovna Blavatsky had brought the ancient wisdom to the West and co-founded the Theosophical Society during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Both of the Roerich's were members and were undoubtedly well-read in the relevant subjects. At the turn of the twentieth century countless artists turned to Theosophy and such esoteric subjects and prominent among these are Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian. However, few artists are prepared or able to make the sacrifices necessary to put into practise the spiritual disciplines advocated by the Masters of the Wisdom. But with Roerich we find one such individual united in his path with, first his wife, and then his two sons. Humanity is in sore need of such self-sacrificing artists if those spiritual energies that contain the answer to the need of our time is to find a voice and all who follow the path of spirit will find inspiration in this story. Their lifetime together has many layers - even as Roerich's beloved paintings have several layers. We could take his paintings of Nagarjuna, Padmasambhava, Tsong-Kha-Pa,, Milarepa, Zoroaster, etc. For example, Lao Tse was reportedly last seen heading for Shambhala - and so he is depicted in Roerich's Banners of the East painting of 1924. Layers of meaning and significance lie in such paintings waiting to be teased out - as with life itself. One's research reveals more and more and one can liken living with these paintings to being on a journey. For example, a few years back I discovered that the local name for Alexander the Great was Iskander - thus another piece of the jig-saw fell into place, especially regarding the painting 'Iskander with his Teacher' by Roerich. This isn't a book about the paintings of Nicholas Roerich, but rather the spiritual adventures of two individuals united in spirit and together devoted in service to humankind and totally commited to the Work both of their Master, the Mahatma Morya, and of the united White Lodge of Masters and adepts as unfolded in the legends of the mythical Shambhala and the Hierarchy of Light and the Coming Era of Maitreya Buddha and of Rigden Djapo. When one considers all of the paper used to print fiction one can be grateful that here is a truly sublime use of earth's resources to help uplift all who read it.
A wonderful book - destined to be a significant contribution to the world of spiritual literature. I can thoroughly recommend it without any equivocation.

Here is the amazing story of two early twentieth-century Russian visionaries whose quest to unite humanity through art and culture still echoes powerfully today.

Next I'd like a movie made from this book.......2006-09-20
I'm so glad a friend told me about this book. I love the paintings - so clear and fresh; simplicity with depth of meaning.
It is gratifying that the author was able to compile such a detailed record of the Roerich's life, work and travels. I enjoyed traveling in my imagination by way of the diary entries - and to places I would NOT want to endure physically - 17,000 foot mountains, for example.
The entire book stretches my imagination - that Helena received so much direction and information in non-physical ways, all the miracles of perfect timing, the pull of India and how they overcame obstacles to visit and live there.
Truly it reads like a novel for which a movie script will be written - their story is so rich, their lives so full of adventures, and alas, there is also a betrayal - just like the movies. Plus, an index - a librarian's dream!
I recommend this to anyone interested in world history, the search for peace, and the development of spiritual understanding.

An adventure of two exceptional souls.......2006-08-03
The life of Nicolas and Helena Roerich has been veiled by various conflicting assessments. Some coming from guru worshiping admirers others from sceptics or jealous opponents. In her book, Ruth A Drayer's vivid text is that of an intelligent observer showing the reader a dispassionate canvas yet fully aware of the amazing quality of these two people who are still an inspiration to artists and esotericists from all over the world. I could not put the book down and would invite anyone not to miss the reading of a very special journey--an adventure of two exceptional souls.
Moved to tears.......2006-08-03
I just finished reading "Nicholas & Helena Roerich: The Spiritual Journey of Two Great Artists and Peacemakers," and want to express my appreciation for your book. Although I knew how it would end, I was moved to tears when I read of the passing of Nicholas and Helena. I have been a student of the Roerichs for over 30 years and I greatly value the love and consciousness your book embodies. Thanks and blessings to you, Ruth.
Nicolas & Helena Roerich exemplify the power of the human spirit.......2006-08-02
The lives of Nicholas and Helena Roerich as recounted by Ruth Drayer have enlightened my being. Just as the Roerich's used their artistic genius and clear intention to discover inner peace and create a world where the kernel of spiritual peace could live in all humanity, this book demands that one look inward and ask the question, "How can I make a difference in my life?". Helena and Nicholas will touch your heart, stir your dreams and remind you of the power and perseverance of the human spirit.
A shared journey.......2006-07-06

Ambition and Survival: Becoming a Poet

Winner of the 11th annual Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize, "The Long Home" is Christian Wiman's first collection of poetry. The title narrative of the book is a riveting long poem from the viewpoint of a woman living in west Texas prior to the Great Depression. The story poignantly chronicles her history, from a childhood spent working in Texas cotton fields, through the life and death of her husband, and finally to the image of her grandson who "walks through walls he does not see." The beginning of his story appears to herald the end of hers, when "he waits, listening. It is all still now."
The lovely cadences in Wiman's shorter poems combine memory and emotion to bring an immediacy to the experiences within them. In "Revenant" a woman's passionate attraction to storms veils a furious death wish. The villanelle, "What I Know," merges the memory of a father's words with the emotional ties of parent and child that transcend time and death: "Some darknesses breathe, look back at you. / Under the porch a pair of eyes waits all day." Wiman's poetry is worth reading again and again. --Susan Swartwout

well written but dated.......2007-04-28
I read Mr. Wiman's other later book before I read this one and I actually like this one better. Though less ambitious, the later seems more pretentious and emotionally false. At least here we have a narrative to carry us along, which makes me think that Mr. Wiman is a perhaps a better prose writer than he is a poet. Certainy his aptitude for writing a poetic line is surprisingly amateurish; moreover, he lacks the eye for particularizing detail that is a hallmark of good poetry. My recommendation is not to waste your money on this one.
great long poem.......2004-12-17
This book is divided into two sections. The first contains a handful of Wiman's shorter poems. And to be honest, there is nothing particularly spectacular about them. That being said, section two is a long narrative, the title poem. And it is pretty good. It covers the life of woman growing up in West Texas in the early part of this century. Wiman writes very well in her voice and keeps her an interesting character. The story is an interesting one and he keeps the narrative flow going quite well. While I wasn't impressed with the poems in section one, I will be buying this book for the title poem.
Subtle and Strong.......2000-10-21
I learned of Christian Wiman from a marvelous essay he published in The Threepenny Review, in which he talks about reading Milton's "Paradise Lost" in Guatemala. Intrigued, I purchased "The Long Home," and I can say that I was not disappointed. While all the poems are not of equal strength, I've always felt that poets should be judged by their best work, and at least one poem, the sonnet "Revenant," is a masterpiece. In that work, more than in the longer title poem, Wiman shows his gifts as a rigorous thinker: "her white face under the unburdening skies / upturned to feel the burn that never came: / that furious insight and the end of pain." The shape of this poem, on every level, engages the tightly-coiled subject of a woman's singular obsession. I've read this poem many times and as with all great poems each time I discover something new. But the long poem of the book's title, while often moving and evocative of a particular time and place, seems to me to be too loose, occasionally approaching an arbitrarily clipped prose piece. (Wiman has, to my ear, a disagreeable habit of beginning lines with "Of," as in "without a speck / Of paving," "a level cloud / Of cotton," "a single lock / Of cotton..." and so forth. There are several similar examples on nearly every page of the poem.) Despite these reservations, overall this is an excellent volume and I will be eager to read Wiman's next book, and curious to see in what direction his work evolves.
World view of a private history.......2000-01-28
Wiman's work is largely humble -- even the grandest of moments are rather subdued (in a grand way, of course). The language is asthetically lovely and he skillfully avoids the over-sentementality that one would expect from a family memoir. Another reviewer accused Wiman of being a slave to the MFA grind, but I couldn't disagree more. Wiman may be young, but his work is wise and freshly rooted in an understanding of poetic and human history.
a spare epic.......1999-11-21
The Long Home, the central work in the collection, is a gorgeously written epic story of Texan history. Christian Wiman writes with a spare and incisive intelligence and compassion, a wonderful stillness and attention to language and lilt.
I heartily recommend this book!

Book Description
Winner of the 15th annual Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize
Selected from more than 900 manu-scripts, this collection possesses unusual thematic coherence and intimacy. Many poems are set in the author's-native China. They explore family history and dynamics set against the oppressive Cultural Revolution.
Yun Wang, born in a small town in Southwest China in 1964, came to the U.S. to study physics in 1985. She is an assistant professor specializing in theoretical cosmology at the University of Oklahoma. This is her first full-length collection.
Customer Reviews:
The Book of Jade is a polished diamond.......2005-06-10
Yun Wang melds the magic of words with the magic of physics in the best of what poetry can and should offer. Her poems gift us with elegance and insight, opening dark places to light and - sometimes - to even darker places. The universe is captured in the immediate present, and she has the ability to make the past as immediate.

wonderfully strange and exotic.......2003-02-06
Exciting stuff. Truly cosmic poetry, about space, consciousness, existence, cosmology, the universe, love, men, women, flirting, babies, birds, fish, Martians, music, exotic dancers, growing up in China, travelling around the world, and everything in between.
What a rush. I was alternately astounded, shocked, confused, frightened, awed, amused, and delighted, by the very intelligent poetry in this book.
Book Description
A celebration of the artist, mystic, and Nobel nominee Nicholas Roerich, whose life and work significantly influenced the development of modern art and culture.
Messenger of Beauty opens the door to the mystical world of Nicholas Roerich and invites us to witness his far-reaching vision. Artist, writer, educator, archaeologist, explorer, mystic, and peacemaker, Roerich (1874-1947) left a rich legacy of some 7,000 paintings, drawings, and set and costume designs (most notably for Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring); 30 books on the mystic East; and countless articles and lectures. The Roerich Peace Pact--a remarkable treaty signed by President Roosevelt and 26 other heads of state that sought to preserve cultural monuments during times of war--earned the artist a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Messenger of Beauty includes 88 color plates that cover the full scope of Roerich's artistic career, from ancient Slavic, mythic, and archaeological subjects to breathtaking Himalayan landscapes and religious themes that span the spiritual traditions of the world.

Nicholas Roerich.......2007-02-12
This is an exquisitely beautiful book and immediately transports one to 'another dimention'. Roerich's paintings, his unusual use of colour and hues capture a luminous quality that speaks to the soul. His writing, paintings and travels are a true inspiration of the human spirit.
A Constant Source of Inspiration.......2000-09-18
This is an excellent book on the beautiful and inspiring paintings of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. Exceptional value with 88 colour reproductions of his work. The written material is faultless and fascinating. Roerich was dedicated to Beauty and I find that whenever I dip into this book I am completely captivated by his ability to speak to my innermost heart and spirit through the language of colour and the rich symbolism of his paintings. Fascinated by the legends of Shambhala and the wisdom of the ancients, Roerich's paintings and Decter's words take us on a wonderful journey that will enrich our lives. Roerich was a very deeply spiritual man and so his paintings serve this higher purpose. If you wish to light the inner fire of your spirit through art and beauty, then this is the book for you.
A fascinating biograpy with over 80 paintings reproduced........1999-01-18
If you are looking for a book about the life and art of Nicholas Roerich or if you are looking for a fascinating account of a modern mystic, one of the great men of this time, this is it. The book contains over 80 of his paintings, drawings and theatrical set designs. The biographical accounting is fascinating and inspiring. I found this book very enjoyable and highly recommend it. Also suggest checking out the web site of the Nicholas Roerich museum in N.Y. city. Paul Huston

beautifully controlled poems.......2002-07-31
The language in these poems is clear, precise, and absolutely gorgeous. But the control doesn't come at the price of emotion; the poems are also deeply felt, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking. This is a wonderful collection of poetry by a talented young author.
Don't Miss This!.......1998-12-31
What Anderson does here is remarkable. In this first book he reflects back to us some of the awkward inadequasies with which we all live in a subtle voice polished with undeniable wit. From snipe hunts to Icarus to the all familiar football coach, Anderson has produced a collection that may be his first but promises to not be his last.
Precise, Accessible Poetry.......1997-07-16
January Rain marks the introduction of a very fine poet. Daniel's poetry is so precise (the meter is nearly perfect in EVERY poem) that one worries the subject matter may suffer. Amazingly, Anderson's poems are filled with images which strike a chord in everyone. "The Last Resort" took me straight back to a vacation in a place much like the one he is describing. And "Snipe! Snipe! Snipe!" starts the reader with a funny, laughable image of a young child trying to fit in but manages to turn to a scene with a lover without hesitation. The concept of a man who never knows when to say when is portrayed in an unusual, yet extremely successful, manner. For those who are loyal to poetry, this is one collection you cannot miss. For those who regard poetry as inaccessible and lacking in reward to those who struggle with it, give this collection a try. January Rain is fabulous

A Distinctive New Voice in Poetry.......2002-09-15
The poems in this volume are rare in contemporary poetry in that they manage to be both clever and moving at the same time. Williamson writes adeptly in regular meter and rhyme, and his take on the world is fresh and often surprising.
Great Poetry That Rhymes and Makes Sense!.......2000-12-15
Following in the grand tradition of New Formalist poets, the author brings his unique contribution to the forefront of poetry that should be read and re-read today. Harking back to Thomas Hardy, W.B.Yeats, Robert Frost,Walter de la Mare, John Masefield, W.H.Auden, A.E.Housman and carrying forward in the footsteps of modern greats like Richard Wilbur, Gjertrud Schnackenburg, Elizabeth Jennings,A.E.Stallings, Dana Gioia, and John Hollander, Mr. Williamson shows he is a poet that is to reckoned with. Although technical prowess is only a necessary, not a sufficient condition to be counted with the masters, Greg is well on his way with the poems selected here. Favorites include Counterfeit and Winter. It would be an even greater tribute to his skill to see some villanelles and sonnets in his next collection. A must have addition to the poetic repertoire of what Yeats called 'words set to life's music'.
Clever, sophisticated and funny.......1998-11-04
These make me think of snow globes, delightful little worlds in miniature. The topics are clever - the unrecognized artistry of a counterfeiter; the abstract beauty of the world as seen through someone who needs glasses; the historic significance of junkyards full of cars. Because the poems are personal this book would make a nice gift.
