A Fantastic Journey to Hidden Dimensions.......2001-08-16
I couldn't agree more with the previous review. This book is a rare jewel. It is far more poetic than factual, and many of the statements and assertions it contains will irritate and infuriate the skeptic and the cynic. On the other hand, this is the real deal...this book does a superb job of crystallizing the intangible spiritual forces and dimensions that make Rhedae such an unforgettable flower of eternity. It is a haunting and ultimately nonverbal book, and I'd have to say it's one of my all-time favorites. Every page is packed with awesome and nebulous mysteries. You'll either give it five stars or you'll think it's the worst piece of gibberish you've ever seen....sheer poetry from beginning to end. Vive le Cardou!
A BIG Piece of the Rennes Puzzle..........1999-03-16
Too bad ALL of the "Rennes-les-Chateau Addicts" don't have this book... they might then have a CLUE!
This is a MARVELOUS compendium of arcane lore, compared and listed alongside details of that most interesting mystery of Southern France which makes clear the absolute ANCIENT nature of it, and makes irrelevant all the silly conjectures about the "Tomb of God" or the "Horse of God" or buried "treasure" of the 3 dimensional ilk.
Ms. Van Buren's conclusions are VERY deep and complex, but entirely in keeping with the demonstrated complexity of this phenomenon. It has proven over and over again to "shift and move" with the assumptions and expectations of the "seeker," showing us that there is not a simple nor cut-and-dried answer as so many expect to find. It is TRULY an alchemical work...
The SERIOUS Rennes-les-Chateau and "Shepherds of Arcadia" aficionado cannot afford to NOT buy this book!

THIS BOOK IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND FOLLOW.......2000-09-10
There are a wide selection of styles that one can find it dificult to not find something that he/she may like. The important part is that the line drawings are shown in very minute step by step details that make it easy to imitate the patterns in real life structures. Complete floor plans and three dimenstioan views are made available thus providing a more complete picture of what you are getting. These are real homes given with the actual location of the city where they were taken from. A great book for architects andhomeowners interested in the styles of a bygone era
Scale Victorian house plans and detail drawings........1995-11-29
This book, originally published in 1881, contains floorplans and elevations of several dozen Victorian houses. Some plans are possibly suitable for actual construction. As the accurate title implies there are many drawings of architectural details. All plans are drawn to scale, but have been reduced by 12%. This book is a must-have for fans of Victorian architecture or home builders that are looking for Victorian-style ideas

Book Description
This book reviews our knowledge of the incoherent speech which can present as a symptom of schizophrenia. This is one of the most researched symptoms in the disorder. The content covers clinical presentation, differential diagnosis and the theories proposed to account for the symptom in these ‘thought disordered’ patients, ranging from the psychoanalytic to there being a form of aphasia involved. The book is unique in its ability to apply linguistic and neuropsychological approaches to the understanding of this condition, and is the first book to cover comprehensively the range of clinical studies that followed the introduction of Andreasen’s rating scale for what was then called thought, language and communication disorder. This book is essential reading for all those working in the field of schizophrenia and also for those interested in language and disorders of speech.

Book Description
The Messenger of God said, "Whenever the door of supplicatory prayer du'a is opened unto any of ye, the doors of Mercy too shall be opened unto him."--Qur'an
Doors of the Kingdom is a unique collection of photographs depicting the ancient and disappearing craft of doormaking in Arabia. The Islamic concept of hurma, or sanctity of a place of dwelling or worship, is recurrent throughout Arabic poetry and literature. The door (bab), preserver of sanctity, becomes symbolic of the boundary between public and private space, and between the profane and the sacred.
In 1995, Haajar Gouverneur traveled throughout the Arabian Peninsula photographing each region's distinctive doorways and the remaining artisans who make them. The doors of Arabia, painstakingly hand-carved from the wood of the Al-Athel trees, last in their exquisite variety for hundreds of years. This ancient craft, passed down from generation to generation in the central and northern regions of Saudi Arabia, is now nearly extinct. Modern materials, technology, and changing priorities threaten the continuity of the sacred and artisanal tradition of doormaking.

Of Mixed Quality and Limited Interest.......2004-11-15
Published in conjunction with an exhibit of traditional Saudi doors, this coffee-table book shows traditional doors that are actually still in use throughout the kingdom. A brief introductory essay outlines the differences in style and materials used for construction throughout the four regions of Saudi Arabia. And then it's on to the photographs, which, is has to be said, are somewhat of a disappointment. There are several magnificent doors shown, however in many cases the photographer seems to have had real problems with the natural lighting. Many of the photos are either washed out from being overexposed, or are murky, with details lost in shadows. It's a shame that the photos aren't more consistent, because when they are good, they are very good. Unfortunately, there are also a few instances where somewhere in the book's production, the negative has been flipped. In general though, the book's production is very nice, with rich, thick paper. Interspersed with the photographs is some beautiful calligraphy by the master Mohammed Zakariya. A brief afterword says all the usual things about traditional Islamic art and architecture. All in all, of mixed quality and of limited interest.
first class work!.......2000-05-30
I saw this book in its preparation stages before its ultimate publication. Many of the photographs provided inspiration for the marvellous exhibition on Saudi Arabian doors that was presented by the Al-Nahda foundation in Riyadh in 1995.
For anyone wanting to learn more about Saudi Arabia, this book provides a wonderful visual experience to the culture and history of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Book Description
Chronic illness may feel like an impassible barrier, but it can become the doorway to a new and more creative existence. Leonardo da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Michelangelo, and Georgia O’Keeffe are among the many artists whose physical disorders enhanced their creativity and transformed their lives. Illness shaped their work, and their masterpieces changed our world. In the face of pain and disability, they showed perseverance and ingenuity, revealing that life’s lowest moments can hold great potential for creativity and growth.
The artists profiled in this book came from many different backgrounds and worked in a variety of media. But all of them experienced a transforming illness by using creativity to triumph over challenges. A transforming illness can happen to anyone at any time, from early in life to its very end. It can even happen more than once. Whether it is a single episode of poor health or a chronic condition, things are never the same afterward. When Tobi Zausner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1989, her doctor didn’t think she would last the year, but her life was transformed. For Zausner and the other artists discussed in these pages, the wall of illness became a door of opportunity.
Using fascinating and well-documented life stories of artists and drawing upon her own experience, Zausner offers us methods for accessing our creative abilities and ways to turn a time of poor health into achievement and a more meaningful new life. Creativity is a basic human capacity extending across racial and cultural boundaries, as shown by the artists in this book. In their diversity and their determination they demonstrate that the transforming illness is fundamental to the human condition.

Illness as an opportunity for growth.......2007-10-10
Whole Person Healthcare [Three Volumes]
In a society that values physical perfection and youth, people with illnesses have psychological as well as physical challenges. Tobi Zausner, whose background is both in art and psychology, has showed us how to use illness as a source of inspiration and creativity by reviewing the lives of both historical and contemporary artists. For healthcare professionals working in medical settings, for students learning about the meaning of illness, and for the lay person who has an illness, this beautiful new book is a must!
Not Another Book Like It!.......2007-02-14
Of course, I had to flip right over to the chapter about Vincent van Gogh - having attended one of Dr. Zausner's lectures on the subject, which is so fascinating to me! Vincent seems to always be THE ARTIST we run to when we think of overcoming terrible odds and "combating [his] sickness with creativity."
Tobi's empathy for these suffering artists is evident on every page, for this book is a very personal elucidation, which absolutely goes hand-in-hand with her own masterfully transcendent paintings. It's easy to feel her deep and soulful compassion with every word and brushstroke.
You'll be so inspired with each anecdote, and all the carefully researched data, and understand the creative process more profoundly than ever... and all at once you'll discover she offers not only the problems but the solutions. Artists, by nature, CREATE - they making something out of nothing. But herein Tobi teaches you how the depth of the human spirit truly glows in the countless examples she has found to flesh out her thesis.
Her cover of Vincent's 'Wheatfield and Cypress Trees' is so appropriate for this wonderful book because it is filled with all the juxtapositions of serenity and conflict, harmony and pain... I can't wait to read her next book!
courage and creativity.......2007-02-13
This remarkable book by Tobi Zausner, artist and psychologist, is principally a compendium of people whose lives have been transformed by illness or injury, from one of adversity to one of productivity and fulfillment through art. It includes psychological insight and some autobiographical elements. Besides introducing us to some remarkable people, and stimulating our empathy for them, it tantalizes the reader to explore their art (Googling makes it easy. Visits to real museums and exhibits are, of course, more rewarding). For those of us who may not be as creative as her artists, is may give us the courage to become more creative and fulfilled. Thank you, Tobi. You've created a book that, like your art, is truly great.
From darkness to light.......2007-02-08
This book is inspiring and, also, well-researched. Dr. Zausner is both an artist herself, and an art-historian/psychologist. Here are stories and vignettes about artists, both well-known, and not so well-known, for whom illness has brought unsuspected gifts and opportunities. This occured for them in part through good fortune but also by their ability to seize and transform a situation or a life. What makes this possible? Here is the challenge. We can learn from these accounts ourselves as we face our own life trials. Many categories of illness and disability are covered. I just gave this book as a gift to a friend with her own serious illness, to give her new hope. It adds to the power of this book that Dr. Zausner, herself, has had transforming illnesses, and she shares these as well with the reader.

Book Description
A home's facade speaks volumes. In fact, the changing facades of the American home mirror the changes of our nation—from puritanical Colonial to wealthy Georgian; from the pioneering spirit of the western Prairie style to the industrially inspired Modern. Who would think a front door would have so much to say? But not only does a front entranceway convey a moment in the history of architectural design, it also serves as the most dramatic and affordable means to make your home reflect your personal taste.
You've seen many of these entrances before, but perhaps withut knowing their architectural style, the period they represent, or their place in American history. You probably prefer some more than others, but perhaps without knowing exactly why. And you may have een tried visualizing some of the entrances on your own home...
With 120 drawings by architect Paulo Vicente and accompanying text by home design expert Tom Connor, The Language of Doors identifies and discusses 350 years of architectural styles. It then applies these various styles to entranceways of differing homes so you can imagine the impact a new entrance might have on your own home.
With its easy-to-read labels and informative glossary, The Language of Doors is at once a mini history of American home design and a dictionary of architectural elements. You don't have to be a home owner to want to know the difference between a flute and a dentil, a keystone and a pilaster. But if you are a homeowner with an interest in upgrading the look of your home, The Language of Doors is the perfect book to spark your creative thinking and just possibly save you thousands of dollars in architect's and builder's fees.

Book Description
When Linette Martin, a student at Oxford University, asked her art history tutor if there were any good books on icons for the ordinary reader, he replied that there were books by Orthodox theologians from an theological perspective and books by art history professors from an art history perspective, but nothing for the ordinary reader. Martin, herself an Anglican, set out to fill the gap by writing Sacred Doorways: A Beginner's Guide to Icons.
Martin explains that she was initially captivated by the beauty and mystery of icons, but did not understand their "language." Her goal for Sacred Doorways was to write their alphabet, thereby helping others to understand this ancient Byzantine art form. Icons, Martin explains, are meant to convey Christian truths in a visual form, as a complement to the written Bible.
Sacred Doorways is an ideal book for the Orthodox to pass along to their non-Orthodox friends. For Catholics and Protestants, it will serve as a non-technical, yet comprehensive introduction to help to increase understanding and appreciation of Orthodox spirituality. For the general reader, Sacred Doorways provides an essential guidebook to one of the most ancient religious art forms in the world.

Beautiful Yet Simple.......2007-07-05
I really liked this book. It is very well written and had a nice way of putting complex ideas into really simple terms.I would say it is the perfect book to give to someone who is trying to find out what iconography is all about.
Sacred Doorways reviewed.......2007-07-04
This book helped me to understand the importance of the icon in the Orthodox faith. There was an extensive overview of the history, meaning and technique involved with icons. I have ordered additional books about the Eastern Orthodox church as a result.

Understanding of Icons - Art & Religion.......2006-06-11
Linette Martin an Anglican artist has written a very good book for artists and a satisfactory book for those who are trying to understand icons from a religious perspective.
This is a very detailed art book which explains how the icon artists approached their work. Ms. Martin ties the art techniques of icons with what she believes are the religious view point of the icon painters.
If you are a searcher, one who is looking to convert to the Eastern Church, one who is trying to understand the mystical roles of icons in the religious life of Orthodox Christians, then this book will in my opinion not meet your needs.
This is not an easy read. I would say that this book is more of an advanced guide to icons, not a beginner's book, for one who is just starting to investigate Orthodox Christianity.
If you are an artist, trying to expand your knowledge of this religious art form, then I can highly recommend this work.
Great Introduction.......2006-04-25
This is a really great introduction to what the symbols, colors, and items mean in iconography. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in iconography.

This is such a beautiful book and as I am especially taken with Doors, I knew it was and is a must have. I highly recommend it for its sheer beauty.
The Mystery of Closed Doors.......2001-09-21
This is one of my favorite books to look through when I'm in a contemplative mood. No, it may not be an inspiration for those looking to redecorate. However, for those of us who are fascinated with the possibilities of the unknown, this book offers an amazing collection of photographs of interesting and unusual doors, leading one in a mental journey, weaving your own fantasy of what the doors teach us about those on the other side. I was intrigued by this book from my first viewing, and I continue to find new possibilities each time I revisit. It is a great book to stimulate the imagination.
Colorful Doors.......2001-04-25
What you see on the cover is basically what you get throughout the book. Colorful, rustic, old doors. Seems like most of the doors are of certain taste or region. Mostly southwestern or old latin american villages. Personally I was looking for a book to give me ideas for interesting, welcoming doors and entryways for more traditional homes in the northeast. This book is not for me.
