Book Description

Kevin Griffin, a Buddhist meditation teacher and longtime Twelve Step practitioner, weaves his personal story of recovery with traditional Buddhist teachings. The book takes us on a journey through the Steps, examining critical Twelve Step ideas like Powerlessness, Higher Power, and Moral Inventory through the lens of Buddhism. One Breath at a Time presents potent ancient techniques for finding calm and clarity and offers a vision of a Higher Power not tied to traditional Western Judeo-Christian concepts. One Breath at a Time describes the convergence of two vital traditions, one ancient, the other contemporary, and shows how they are working together to create a rich spiritual path for our times. Certain to resonate with both meditators and those whose mantra is 'One day at a time,' One Breath at a Time should find a large, welcoming audience.

5 out of 5 stars One Breath at a TIme.......2007-10-17

This incredibly insightful book has deepened my understanding of both my meditation practice and the twelve steps. I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone working the twelve step program who may be having difficulty with the "Higher Power" concept. Anyone with a meditation practice can benefit (as I did) from using the twelve step format to help gain better understanding of Buddhist concepts.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Spiritual Journey.......2007-09-16

This is one of the finest books I've read linking the 12 Steps of AA with the practices of Buddhism. Kevin Griffin has a magnificent grasp of both and presents them so clearly that it truly is a thrill to read. Excellent writing as well, sometimes poetic. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars hidden gem.......2007-05-10

I bought this book for my bf as he was coming out of rehab, and ended up reading it myself as well. It has lessons and guidance that even a non-addicted person can apply to their everyday life. I highly recommend this book, it is a quick read, and you'll leave knowing things about yourself you didn't before.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to the Twelve Steps and Western Buddhism.......2006-11-25

Kevin Griffin and friends put a lot of thought into integrating these two approaches. However, what makes the book a Five Star instead of a Four Star is the totally honest portrayal of his own life by Mr. Griffin as he tells of his misdeeds and how he hurt others in his bouts with alcohol and drugs. He offers hope and redemption to the rest of us and you will love his happy ending. Were we all so open, humble, and acknowledging of our faults and missteps. A great read for us recovering folks who also would like to focus on Step Eleven, especially through a Buddhist perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom from Mara (Illusion).......2006-10-17

This is an interesting dimension on the 12-steps which were Christian in origin and spiritual in nature. One Breath at a Time is a Buddhist slant on the one day at a time approach in recovery. One primary lesson from Buddhist philosophy is that attachment and craving are at the root of suffering. Addiction is both an attachment and a craving whose compulsions take over and trap an individual in an endless cycle. Whether the addiction is to a substance or a behavior the illusion that it frees the person from pain is what mara is ... a mirage promising bounties that are empty. So ... for those who are interested in other perspectives of recovery - this is one read to consider.

4 out of 5 stars I would have given this book five stars, had I ever read it........2007-01-10

Gods do not want me to know what Dale Carnegie wrote in his book. First time I ordered it, the dimwits from the post office lost the package. By the time that fact became firmly established, Amazon did not have any more copies in stock and issued a refund. I ordered then from one of the Amazon sellers, but few weeks later got another refund. And today, I have received an e-mail, asking me to review few earlier purchases, including this book. The e-mail had a convenient link to the reviewer's page. So, here you go: happy to oblige!

4 out of 5 stars A good read but..........2006-11-03

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was amazing how relevent it still is and how little people truely have changed. This book is a must read. The only complaint I have which prevents me from giving this book a 5 star rating is; a few sermons scattered mostly towards the end of the book. I really didn't appreciate them. After a person gets past this I would recomend this book, and have recomended it to friends with the cautionary comment about the 'sermons'.

4 out of 5 stars New Title Suggestion: How to get laid in 60 minutes........2003-03-26

The very first time I applied these techniques in a bar, I simultaneously made out with 2 gorgeous women. This book has changed my life... What more can I say?

There are, however, some points that must be cleared up before you apply the techniques within this guide.

1.In many cultures, it is considered rude to ask personal questions of a relative stranger. (ex: "what do you do for a living.")

2.In today's legal environment, you may be held liable if you begin an argument by telling your opponent they are correct. (Ex: saying "I'm sorry" at a traffic accident.)

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2002-09-08

This book was written in the early 1900s and still is very effective today. I found this book to be essentially "priceless". Whatever I describe here would not do justice to what this book deserves.

Believe the other reviews, I bought this book based on them and am very glad I did. Very easy to read, very long but something you do not want to put down.

5 out of 5 stars I may be wrong but let us examine the facts.......2002-01-22

You know this book only got a 4.5 rating which made me curiuos. After scaning through all the review, i found that some actually gives the lowest rating there is to the book. I was upset.

Still it was no surprise that they don't like it. You cannot satify everyone. But then some of this reviews does sound misleading which in turn gets on my nerve.

I mean how many times do you come across a book that does exactly as what its title said? Tecnical book maybe, but self-helps? And how many self-help that put a title so bold as this one in the first place? The thing is,this book delivers. You might have to apply it constantly to be good at it and sometimes it might even be difficult but it delivers.(it takes time)

The other thing is this book doesn't teach you to lie or decipt. Although some may do that after reading the book but then it's not because the book teaches them to be evil, only simply because they are unethical. It is like saying cloning is bad because poeple can use the technology to create an army of super human. Like science, the book doesn't tell how to use your knowledge but only tells you how to do it.

Sincerity. The book does to emphasize on it in order to not confuse its principles as evil. So, why does people still get confuse? As I understand, the defination of sincerity (in virtue terms) means performing something like helping other people
or giving something away with hoping for reward or anything else in return.
So does winning friends. You may become popular or well liked but don't hope for anything in return if you are sincere. It is because of people hoping for too much when applying this principles that they gives 1 star for the book. -sigh-

The other thing I was upset are reviews that like the book but doesn't gives full star for it. Why? Don't they realised that there is no other book like this one?(ok there is another one) Dale Carnegie wrote self-help like how it should be written:
1. Include priciples of successful people.(two years research)
2. 8 years of research through experience of thousands of people.
3. No "the best way to [insert action] for me is this, this, this and so I hope you would follow my style of doing things".
4. An introduction that says "Why do I bother to write another book, and after I have written it, why would you evenbother to read it. Fair question and I shall try to answer them both..."

As Carnegie himself said, this book is not born out of the ivory tower. If you think that there is a better way to write a self-help book, tell me and then find a book that is written that way. Betcha can't.

Book Description

In eighteenth-century Japan, Tsunetomo Yamamoto created the Hagakure, a document that served as the basis for samurai warrior behavior. Its guiding principles greatly influenced the Japanese ruling class and shaped the underlying character of the Japanese psyche, from businessmen to soldiers.

Bushido is the first English translation of the Hagakure. This work provides a powerful message aimed at the mind and spirit of the samurai warrior. It offers beliefs that are difficult for the Western mind to embrace, yet fascinating in their pursuit of absolute service. With Bushido, one can better put into perspective Japan's historical path and gain greater insight into the Japan of today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Version on this Subject.......2007-07-22

I can't better the other review below except to say that this translation of the Bushido is far easier to read, understand, digest and put into daily practice than the hoards of other versions of "Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai by Tsunetomo Yamamoto" which this book is based upon.

Despite a totally different translation, nothing is lost when you put the two books side by side and compare them to each other.

By the way, the title "Bushi-do" does not mean "Hidden behind the Leaves", that is the translation of the "Hagakure". Any martial artist worth his salt will easily recognise the two parts of the word: Bushi (Warrior) & do (the way) - The Way of the Warrior (or Samurai).

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Read - Difficult to Apply.......2007-07-19

Bushido: The Way of the Samurai (Square One Classics) is a superb little book that makes some important points. However, it is all too easy to take what it has to say out of context. The time and place to which it was literally relevant has long since passed. What it has to say about the values one should live by and how one should carry out their mission in life are, on the other hand, timeless.

The same can be said of another important Japanese classic: The Book of Five Rings. Both of these books are important from a philosophical point of view, but difficult to really understand for those who are not immersed in Japanese culture. Both spring from the philosophy of Zen and both do a good job of showing its application is a time of constant warfare and personal danger.

A good choice to put the advice of the Zen warriors into perspective is the book Bushido, the Soul of Japan which gives a broader look at the philosophy and its roots. What Zen is all about and how it may be applied in everyday life - how compatible it is with other philosophies and religions - is well presented.

All three of these books have been bound together into one book: The Samurai Series: The Book of Five Rings, Hagakure -The Way of the Samurai & Bushido - The Soul of Japan, which I can recommend without reservation. Together, these three books add up to much more than the sum of the parts. They are truly synergistic.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Bushido.......2007-03-14

If you want an easy to read book that gives you the basic precepts of Bushido, this will be the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars idealized self aggrandisement that covers over ugly realities.......2007-03-13

This is one of those basic tracts that is given to those who move to Japan, as a view into how things are supposed to work. While it sounds very good when you read it - there are indeed wonderful codes to live by that are elegantly expressed - once you have lived there for a few months you see that it has less (and more) to do with everyday life than meets the eye.

Afterall, there are two levels when dealing with Japan: Tatemae, the syrupy feel-good version of things that saves everyone's "face", and Honne, which is the way people really feel about things; the former gets pounded into your head at the office, the latter you elicit slowly when you go to the bars after work and get drunk. However, Tatemae is a useful tool for bureaucracies, as it is the official way things are supposed to appear to function, complete with a code for the behavior that one should simulate, no matter how differently (or alienated) one feels underneath. The "Bushido" is the purest Tatemae, an instrument of control that is wielded but has little personal meaning beyond that. In my opinion - and I witnessed this often while living in Japan - all the talk of honor and value and loyalty is just that: mere words to mask brutal authoritarianism and mindless obedience to one's place in the hierarchy. As such, there are very interesting things to learn here about how people choose (or submit to a compulsion from without) to behave, but it will not teach the reader about how they feel inside.

Recommended, but don't take it at face value. I wish I could sound more inspired and interested about Japan, but having lived there, I know the ugliness underneath from experience.

5 out of 5 stars Very Cool Stuff .......2007-01-14

The book is full of a collection of thoughs/ideas in the length of one to two paragraphs each. These ideas are passed on to us from some of the great Samurai containing their philosophy on life, death, honor etc.

Book Description

Is it possible to develop an all-inclusive embrace of God, one that can satisfy scientists, philosophers, and priests at the same time? It is, teaches best-selling author Ken Wilber, if you are able to understand The 1-2-3 of God. According to this premier modern philosopher, the seemingly innumerable ways humans conceptualize God can actually be broken down into three basic perspectives. Now, Ken Wilber invites listeners to learn more about: • The "I, We, and It" views of God: how different religions and spiritual paths tend to focus on only one of these three fundamental ways of relating to the divine • Using an integrated 1-2-3 approach to God to open communication between people of different faiths and beliefs • Guided sessions by Ken Wilber for deeply experiencing each of the three aspects of God—mystical, devotional, and objective Through his best-selling books and his work as founder and president of the Integral Institute, Ken Wilber has become one of the world's most recognized and respected pioneers of modern spirituality. With The 1-2-3 of God, he now brings his unique gift for lucid insight to the most essential question asked by spiritual seekers throughout history: what is the true nature of God?

5 out of 5 stars Ken Wilber on God.......2007-09-02

In the One Two Three Of God Ken has, for me, expanded and clarified much of his work. The fourth CD is a guided journey by Diane Hamilton, through the One Two Three of God. It was for me a wonderful finale to the CD set. Diane Hamilton's presentation was clear and a sheer delight.I anticipate returning again and again to listen to these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars The ABC of God, spirituality, religion from history-now-future.......2007-07-22

Incredible, this is the first time I've come across this much gathered knowledge of all those different approaches, believes, understandings, experiences, images, actions, and the current state of the world as a result of all that. And all that information is not even 'just' put alltogehter, through the integral framework Wilber uses, this 4CD kit offers a profound insight in how those different approaches all fit together and what that tells about religion in the future.
A must-hear for everybody in the field of the 'state of the world' and 'roads to the future'.

5 out of 5 stars best way to see the spiritual side of life without abandoning rationality.......2007-05-25

Terrific CD that summarizes Ken Wilber's most recent views of spirituality, which are detailed in "Integral Spirituality." He is one of the most thoughtful people I have read, and provides the best way I have read to see the spiritual side of life without abandoning rationality. This should be most useful to enrich the lives of many people in the modern world. The CD has enough humor to help maintain interest of any listener, and the meditation on CD 4 is quite good. I gave the CD to our minister, and think it is most important for churchgoers to consider the issues here. Their lives will also be much richer for having listened to this CD and considered the issues it raises.

5 out of 5 stars A Companion to Integral Spirituality.......2007-05-15

The One Two Three of God uses the interview format introduced in Kosmic Consciousness to provide an overview of some of the concepts more fully developed in Ken Wilber's Integral Spirituality. The interview is much like those in Kosmic Consciousness, enjoyable to listen to and effectively touching on the integral perspective in relation to God, Spirituality and Religion. As a fan of many of Ken Wilber's writings and of his integral perspective, I found the content to be somewhat basic but generally clearly defined within the conversation dialogue. However, for someone unfamiliar with the basic AQAL framework and the states, stages, levels and lines developmental map, the discussion will most likely be a bit harder to follow. As a companion to Integral Spirituality, this interview session offers an overview of several key points presented in that work. It additionally provides a guided meditation as an experiential introduction toward integrating the 1st, 2cnd and 3rd person understandings of God into a more inclusive spiritual perspective.

4 out of 5 stars Wilber fan, but I had a mixed reaction...........2007-04-28

In actuality, I rated this CD a 3.5. I am big fan of Ken Wilber, but I think he could have done better here. Although this is newer material, it doesn't measure up to the standard Ken set in Kosmic Consciousness for quality. There is a lot of repitition on this CD and for people already familiar with Ken's work it could be annoying. I also don't feel that Integral Spirituality that was released was also up to par for such an established author. I would really like to see more copy editing going forward, because overall I feel Wilber is a genious and one of the most important, if not the most important philosopher of our time.

With respect to content, this CD deals largely with the multiple perspectives one can take on reality i.e. first person, second person and third person. These perspectives correspond to subjectivity, intersubjectivity and an objectivity, respectively. Each of these areas also correspond to a certain orientation toward the divine, for example jnana yoga or path of direct knowledge (first person), bakhti yoga or path of devotion (intersubjectivity) and karma yoga or path of activity in the world (objective). The audio also covers various levels of these three primary dimensions and maps the same essential ideas to various traditons.

There is also a lot of material on this CD about the different spiritual levels and their correlates in culture (this corresponds to the interior of a collective). In other words, Wilber talks about what an orientation to God looks like from an archaic, magical, mythical, rational, post-modern, subtle, causal and non-dual perspective. He uses examples to illustrate how religion shows up in various cultures at some of these stages. The stages beyond rational are more rare and not experienced in the culture, but rather expressed in individual practices.

Again, for many Wilber fans this will be a repitition of familiar material. If you are new to Ken Wilber, Kosmic Consciousness or A Brief History of Everything would certainly be much better introductions to Ken's work.

If you have only read Ken Wilber, you will find another side of him revealed in the interviews. I think it is important to have a sense of his personality and although this comes across better in Kosmic Consciousness, I think you can get that here too.

Overall, Ken has looked across cultures, worldviews, spiritual experience, science, sociology and many other fields to come up with an inclusive model that embraces more of reality. He conceptualizes this by applying a four quadrant model which corresponds to the various perspectives I mentioned above. The fourth quadrant comes from the original model and the three perspectives above result from a simplification of the model to describing both individual (empirical) objective and collective (systems) objective views to a single it/its zone lumped under what he calls the third person view.

There are also various levels within each quadrant where every successive level both transcends and includes the earlier levels. At each level, there are new phenomenon that crop up with emergent properties that can't be explained as the mere sum of parts. An example of this on the physical level would be the heirarchy (holarchy the term Wilber uses) e.g. atoms, molecules, macromolecules (such as proteins, DNA, etc.), cells, tissues, organs, organ systems and multi-cell organisms. In this example, life would be an emergent property that appears with cells.

One of Ken's arguments is that each of the quadrants is irreducible to the others and that each dimension has certain truth criteria associated with it that is appropriate to its domain. In Wilber's opinion, this avoids a situation where we ignore the validity of subjective experience or other important dimensions of reality that can't be measured through the scientific method. For example, he might argue that love exists and consciousness exists, but we can't look at either one through a microscope. There needs to be other ways to validate truth for each quadrant.

From a larger perspective, this worldview offers a post-metaphysical view of reality that validates the legitimacy of the arts (first person), morals (second person) and sciences (third person). This notion is also related to the notions of the Beautiful (first person), Good (second person) and True (third person).

The most valuable thing about this recording from my perspective is the exercises on the last CD. They help you to integrate the concepts on the CD with your own experience. They also give you a feel for how you can make practical use of the model to stretch your boundaries and as a tool for trying on various perspectives, points of view and orientations toward Spirit and the world.

My review does not do justice to Ken's model or the power of his ideas. In a limited space, this is very difficult to convey. However, I have read almost everything Ken has written and I believe he will go down in history as an extremely important thinker. My understanding is that he has 20+ books in print continously since they have been published and he is the only (or one of the only) living authors to have a major publisher put together his collected works during his lifetime.

Admittedly, it is difficult to wrap your arms around Ken's entire thought. It requires a lot of background information on a variety of topics and an understanding of his history including the evolution of his thought which has changed numerous times over 20 years. If you are serious about Wilber, then I would certainly purchase Ken Wilber: Thought As Passion (Suny Series in Transpersonal and Humanistic Pyschology) and use it for context and a general roadmap. If you get this along with Kosmic Consciousness or A Brief History of Everything, you will have a very good foundation and get his most important ideas in a relatively painless way. If you try to tackle something like Integral Psychology : Consciousness, Spirit, Psychology, Therapy right off the bat, you may get discouraged. Some of Ken's works are more accessible than others.

In general, it is good to see Ken giving interviews and it is likely I will buy anything he puts out. However, I would like to hold him to a higher standard in terms of presentation, avoiding unnecessary repitition, etc. The man is a genius, but he is sometimes all over the map.

Finally, I would like to leave you with an intriguing Ken Wilber idea about holism. Ken argues that combining the understanding of quantum physics, ecology and systems theory into a worldview is a gross reduction of reality to the deepest levels of the physical universe. I happen to agree with Ken on this, but it is a very controversial idea. The implication is that we can't even understand the deepest level of physical reality without it breaking down and its complexity leads us to mistake this for all of reality. If this is true, how much more complex might reality be, if there are other ontological levels that are even more complex as described by the Perrenial Philosophy that seems to form the core of every major religion i.e. the levels of the body, emotions, mind, soul and spirit. A lot of Ken's model is based on taking this view very seriously. You can get some good background information on this notion from Forgotten Truth: The Common Vision of the World's Religions. While Wilber differs from Huston Smith in many ways, it is very interesting to see where they are similar and where they differ. This is particularly interesting with respect to Ken Wilber's Integral Methodological Pluralism which comes out of his latest thought and which underlies the contents of this CD at a deeper level. Also, Huston Smith is very eloquent with his methaphors and descriptions, which will also help you to digest Wilber.

This CD is definitely worth buying. However, I don't feel it's the best place to start or the best example of Ken's work. It's a BIG BOOK, but Sex, Ecology, Spirituality: The Spirit of Evolution, Second Edition is a great more or less comprehensive look at the scope of Wilber's thought in one volume. It's a monster, however, at 800+ pages!

Ordained minister and "spiritual life counselor" Iyanla Vanzant doesn't know the exact moment when her soul opened up "and the spirit of the divine entered [her] body." But she will always remember the key insight that opened the door to her soul and simultaneously locked the door to her insanity: "If you know who walks beside you, you can never be afraid." This is the premise from which Vanzant has launched her enormously successful 40-day, spiritual self-help program. One Day My Soul Just Opened Up is designed as day-by-day journal/workbook to help readers believe in a divine presence while pondering daily spiritual lessons such as simplicity, peace, compassion, and nonjudgement.

The charismatic Vanzant (whom Oprah Winfrey considers to be one of the world's most admirable spiritual leaders) has a gift for humble, tell-it-like-it-is talk. She is also a wise and warm soul, eager to help others trust in love and find a relationship with God in order to get on with their lives. Readers especially like her daily list of inspirations titled "Let Me Remember." For example, under day 23, "When You Feel Angry," she uses the list to remind readers: "All things work to bring me healing"; "Forgiveness will provide relief and release"; and "Love will heal anything that is not an expression of love." --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Perception Shift.......2007-09-24

My first thoughts were that this would be an inspiration book that would give me tidbit information that I could incorporate in my life here and there. Was I pleasantly surprised how Iyanla framed this helpful information. She allows you to look at her life and how she came to certain realizations. I prefer this method. It is always helpful to know that others are practicing what they preach. So I recommend you order this book with an open mind, really apply the principles to your daily life and your perception will change...because the energy you give off will be different. I will continue to re-read this book. I have bought this book for many friends because it is just that helpful! I see my actions and my perception of life differently and in a more spiritual sense.I say, all you need to come in with, is a desire to analyze yourself...forget about Iyanla as a great author,or tv personality. This book is about being a better you and purchasing this book is a great start!

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual strength.......2007-07-12

For someone like me that has just searched a lifetime for some kind of meaning to our existance, this book is astounding. It is enlightening to discover that there are others that also become lost in the search in so that they stop searching---or so they think they do! Well worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing.......2007-04-24

I read this book six years ago. It was my last year living in a hopeless marriage of my youth. Married at 19 to someone I barely knew, I was desperate, lost, and terribly afraid of what would happen if my family knew how miserable I was.

I read the book, and found the courage to leave, to live honestly, and to take on the threats of my soon to be ex-husband. My brother called me a disgrace, my ex-husband called me an unfit mother, and still I stood my ground. I made it through, and won in the courtroom battle. No longer would he dominate and terrorize me. Years later my brother apologized. Truth wins in the end. You just have to stand with your feet firmly planted in it.

One day I read this book.. and I know when my soul opened up. It was probably already there.. in me.. that fire, that courage. But when I read this book something changed, and it became action. My pride and fear no longer controlled me. Honestly about my feelings, honestly about my mistakes, and honestly about my dreams and future won over despair and weakness.

Maybe that sounds all flowery and poetic to you. Unbelievable because it's too easy to type... and hard to live. That's okay, I would have been skeptical too.

Buy the book, read it, and then see if you don't do something poetic because of it.

3 out of 5 stars 40 days of introspection.......2007-04-06

Good book to read and review your life with. All the lessons are indepth and stir-up feelings and introspection. I would have liked more biblical principles added. All her books are great, but they miss something with me.

5 out of 5 stars I love Iyanla!.......2007-04-03

I haven't been disappointed yet. Her books always speak to my spirit and I enjoy reading them, they help you along your path of spiritual growth as well as personal growth. I usually read my books and pass them on..but not these!

Looking back, John Edward now sees the early signs that he was destined to become an acclaimed psychic and medium. "There were times when I knew things I shouldn't have known," he writes. "Simple things like who was coming over, or who was on the phone." He knew events in family history that no one had told him about. He was inexplicably fascinated with television characters that possessed supernatural powers. He'd see auras around schoolteachers and hear voices that whispered true information in his mind. Eventually his gifts expanded into hearing the names of spirits "who'd gone to the other side." Finally, as a teenager Edward began to claim rather than question his psychic abilities and committed his life work to pursuing and learning about his gifts. Now that he has become a renowned medium (appearing on numerous talk shows, including Larry King Live), Edwards has written an entertaining "my life as a psychic" type of autobiography, packed with fascinating true stories. At the same time, Edward offers an engaging self-help book, teaching readers how to visit a medium and even showing seekers how they can recognize and develop their own psychic abilities. --Gail Hudson

You may find it enlightening as well.

4 out of 5 stars Still Wanting More Answers!!!.......2007-07-28

For those who are touched by this book, I want you to know that there is something we can't explain. We all have paranormal abilities like John Edward, James Van Praagh, Sylvia Browne, and Char Margolis to name a few. The book is reassuring at times because it makes you feel like you're not alone in this world as some people might perceive us to be weird or strange. The book is about John Edward's biography and is ever evolving psychic abilities. He talks about getting depressed or iritable around negative events. I got this book probably before September 11, 2001 so it doesn't have anything to do with it. For me, I recognized that power and fear when the predictions come true. I'm not so much into contacting the deceased as I am concerned with the future but at the same time, our psychic abilities don't always work to our advantages like getting lottery numbers or picking the right mate. In fact, we can pick for others but we just can't pick for ourselves. John's honesty comes through in his writing and it's an okay biography as well as reassuring that this is not all there is but I want more answers especially about our past lives, our spirit guides, and why we're drawn to certain people. Maybe that could be his next book.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Read!.......2007-07-20

One Last Time was terrific! John Edwards did an excellent job of explaining his gift with the world in a very pragmatic and humorous way. The explanations of the "unexplained", which may have happened to you or those close to you, are sensible and can provide even the most skeptical with a level of comfort not easily found.

5 out of 5 stars fan of crossing over.......2007-04-21

john is a top medium his book is like been in the show well written and a comfort to read as all the others, his personality shines in one last time,i do believe there is more, another book the calling of your true self elizabeth anne bell is another book i could not put down it also rings with truth both well worth reading

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-04-01

John Edward is a remarkable man. I loved this book because it made me feel that those that I have loved and who have gone to the other side are really still here with me.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book - a must read.......2007-05-30

I love books, and I would not label a book a "must read" unless I really felt so. This book is absolutely fascinating. I can't remember the last time I read through an entire 500+ page book, and to add to that, my copy looks like a highlighter exploded all over the place.
This book covers everything from Atlantis, the makers of the Pyramids in Egypt, Peru, and Mexico, parallel universes and other dimensions, aliens and extra terrestrials, life on other planets/star systems, past life memories, the current and coming earth changes, star children, and so much more. I have Book 2 on the way and I can't wait to crack it open.
It's a shame this book is hard to find in stores.
You stumbled upon a jewel. By this book now.

5 out of 5 stars Mind expanding.......2007-04-17

If your Spirit is ready to expand with knowledge of the Universe, then you will be filled with plenty of it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!.......2006-08-25

Hold on to your hats girls and boys! You're life as you know it is about to change. After many years of study I thought I knew a lot. After reading Dolores' books I realize I am just getting started.

5 out of 5 stars a true prism helping us to remember and reflect forth the true light of love.......2006-02-01

This book really doesn't require a review for those of you who have read Delores Cannon, she truly comes from the heart and, through interaction with her clients and through other entities, is able to express and bring forth a plethora of knowledge on past present and future realities while also conveying the importance that it is never the person (or entity) but the message they bring that is most important. We live now in a very tumultuous time where there will continue to be a greater polarization until our reality will no longer exists in the same form. The illusion is starting to crumble and become exposed.

If there is one message that should be gained through this book it would truly be that all of you are loved, and if you take anything besides love from these messages than you must continue your search, as there is no separation. We are on the cusp of a brand new world and are about to embark once again on a limitless journey. To skeptics this book will, at the very least, provide you with highly enjoyable work of fiction which will inevitably open aspects of your mind and experience to new possibilites, which is just as well. Thank you very much to Delores who has devoted much of herself and her time for our benefit and has truly become a vessel of inspiration in her own right. To those who are earnestly seeking know that this book came to you because you asked for this, and those who truly seek and ask will be shown.

5 out of 5 stars incredible.......2004-10-10

I have read most of Dolores Cannon's books and it seems each one gets better. The Convoluted Universe book One is a remarkable and fascinating exploration of other worldly beings, universes and dimensions. I loved it and can't wait for book two to be published.

Book Description

Stop Being the String Along: A Relationship Guide to Being THE ONE will guide you to: * Authentically empower yourself in your romantic relationships * Become your own best friend * Have authentic communication * Learn how to never settle again * Take the manipulative games out of your relationships * Attract a partner that is a fantastic match for you * Learn how to spiritually evolve in a Sacred Relationship * End negative patterns in your relationship * Learn 50 reasons to stay in a relationship * Learn 50 reasons to leave skid marks * Uproot negative programming that has kept you stuck in String Along misery * Learn what it takes to finally get it right In her groundbreaking book Stop Being the String Along, Barbara Rose states: "Give me ten minutes and I can tell you if you are destined to being a string along or THE ONE for the rest of your life!" Rose does this by identifying the "string along warning signs." We all have string along messages thrown onto us that have been imprinted within our subconscious minds. It is in identifying them, and bringing them out into our conscious awareness that turns a string along into THE ONE. You can know every trick in the book about catching someone, subtlety coercing them, and playing a host of games to get what you want, but if you are subconsciously being the string along you will never succeed in a relationship, and even if you do get married, it will most likely not last! The great news is that now you can easily uncover the old string along programming and create authentic, thriving relationship success. If you are not doing as well in your relationship as you would like, you will have to uproot your subconscious string along messages. Unfortunately your current string along messages will tend to stay with you for the rest of your life, unless you identify and revise them, and that's exactly what you will do with the help of this extraordinary book. According to Barbara Rose, it's simple. If you think like THE ONE thinks and do what THE ONE does, chances are you'll be THE ONE too!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best things often come in small packages.......2007-10-10

While I was disappointed to get to the end of the book, I considered every page in there loaded with valuable insights and advice.

This book is the polar opposite of, "The Rules". Thank the Heavens!
In Barbara's book, you are applauded, not tolerated, for being your true self. Just think of the word Intimacy for a moment...phonetically it works out to In-to-me-see. In order to be in a real relationship (base word is relate), you have to be real with yourself before you can even begin to understand what it means to share with others. People say, "Oh yes, I know all about that!" If that's truly the case, then explain why the divorce rate is so high in the United States. If you're hiding your authentic self in order to avoid the possibility of rejection, you're not truly present in the relationship. Under such circumstances how fulfilled and loved can you feel? Why bother then?

Then there's the flip side - people hide parts of themselves and don't reveal things that they feel they have reason to be ashamed of, and their partner feels distrusted and cheapened due to the lack of faith demonstrated by their loved one. Perhaps this creates a chasm deep enough to be irreparable and a break up occurs anyway. One of life's ironies to be sure....ah, the wonders of the self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'm a very happily married woman...for almost 20 years now. Don't think a day goes by that I don't thank God for my blessings. Like another reviewer here, I was intrigued with the possibility of being able to help my single girlfriends realize their inherent value.

The message expressed throughout the book is healing, and you can feel it in your heart, not only the mind. Barbara is a very spiritual, tuned in woman and sets a wonderful example to womankind.

Keep up the good work, Barbara!

My wish for each of you beautiful ladies is to revel in your feminine power and embrace it.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a smart woman's guide to healthy relating!.......2007-07-28

I wished I had found Barbara's book years ago. Being single for 10 years and dating, most of what she writes I've already learned through trial and error. I found a lot of validation through her book and answered many questions on why it couldn't or didn't work the way I had hoped. Save yourself from the dramas of dating and read her book. It's a quick read and highlights the key areas of "healthy" relating while taking good care of yourself. It's a must have for the woman that wants more in her relationship without giving up herself.

3 out of 5 stars Just okay.......2007-04-20

This book didn't tell me any information I didn't already know, except for maybe the checklist to let me know whether or not I was a string along. The way I see it, if you're thinking about buying this book in the first place, you are probably a string along. You don't need a book to tell you that.

4 out of 5 stars The One.......2007-04-05

The book was well written and helped pinpoint the different situations in which we all get strung along at certain times in our lives. Barbara does a good job of getting to the point and explaining what to do or how to deal with various situations. We all owe it to ourselves to be the ONE, to be treated with kindness, love and respect.

5 out of 5 stars Right on the mark.......2007-03-11

Anyone who ever questions her romantic relationships should read this book. It will help them identify when a relationship is just not taking them where they want to go and put an end to "being the string along".

Book Description

In his runaway bestseller BIAS, former CBS News correspondent Bernie Goldberg took us behind the scenes and exposed how the liberal media distort the news. In 100 PEOPLE WHO ARE SCREWING UP AMERICA, Bernie took on the villains who are doing their best to cheapen our culture and wreck our country.

Now, in CRAZIES TO THE LEFT OF ME, WIMPS TO THE RIGHT, Bernie speaks for the millions of Americans who are saying: Enough!

Enough of the leftist lunatics like Rosie O'Donnell who think "Radical Christians" – whatever that means – are "as big a threat to America as Radical Muslims." Enough of the hyperbolic liberal rhetoric comparing Bush to Saddam, Abu Ghraib to the Stalinist gulag, and Mel Gibson to Hitler. Enough of the military–hating crazies who run San Francisco. ("Just what this country needs," Bernie writes, "a city with Rice–A–Roni and a foreign policy.") Enough of the hyper–partisan, ultra–PC liberal media, which often seems more sympathetic to the "victims of humiliation" at Abu Ghraib than to our troops who are dying at the hands of Iraqi fundamentalists.

And enough, too, Bernie declares, of the wimps on the right –– the gutless wonders who don't have the courage to stand up for their own principles. Enough of their pandering, trolling for votes, and outspending the Democrats.

Conservatives still believe in important things, Bernie argues, but the jury is out on the Republicans. The 2006 election was a wake–up call, and Bernie warns: If the wimps on the right fail to regain their courage, recover their principles, and reclaim their sense of fiscal responsibility, the crazies on the left just might win the White House in '08.

5 out of 5 stars At last, a book for BOTH Democrats and Republicans!.......2007-10-11

Some folks think I'm a liberal Democrat, but the truth is that
I try to look at all sides of an issue--and even vote Republican
at times . . . consequently, I find myself reading books
that represent all viewpoints of the political spectrum.

Bernard Goldberg is an author I've read and enjoyed in
the past . . . his BIAS got me thinking, always a good
sign, and I found it a fair treatment of how news is presented
by the media.

In his latest effort, CRAZIES TO THE RIGHT, WIMPS TO THE
RIGHT, Goldberg comes
through again . . . he skewers both political parties, as evidenced
by the book's subtitle: HOW ONE SIDE LOST ITS MIND
AND THE OTHER LOST ITS NERVE.

Though Goldberg was initially Democratic, he became
Republican . . . yet what's so great about his writing is that
it is actually quite balanced and doesn't leave you with
the impression that he is doing a hatchet job, in that
what he says presents a factual basis for many
of his opinions.

For example, I liked this one example:
* In another election, San Franciscans voted--60 percent to 40
percent--to ban military recruiters from their public schools.
Funny, I thought liberals were the ones who were always telling
us that "choice" is a good thing. I guess that only applies to
abortions; not to choosing whether or not you want to let students
listen to a military recruiter talk about a career with the army, navy,
air force, or marines. And even though the vote is "only"
symbolic--officially, it's nonbinding--it does tell us how these people
feel about being citizens of the United States of America.

In addition, I liked his use of humor [inventing a proposed new game
show] to drive home a serious point:

* Okay, one senator down, ninety-nine to go. Bob Barker opens the
drum door again, reaches in, and pulls out another name. This
time he announces to the audience, "Robert C. Byrd"-a politician
who, not for nothing, has been given the name "King or Pork" by
Citizens Against Government Waste. You see, everything in West
Virginia is named after Robert Byrd. Everything. And guess who
paid for all of it? You did!

In case you're wondering just where your money went, here's a
very short list of the pork Byrd brought home. There's the Robert
C. Byrd Expressway, the Byrd Aerospace Tech Center, the
Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse, the Robert C. Byrd Industrial
Park, the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing,
the Robert C. Byrd Bridge, the Robert C. Byrd addition to the lodge
at Oglebay Park, the Robert C. Byrd Library, the Robert C. Byrd
Hilltop Office Complex, and about a million more Robert C. Byrd
Projects that would require a lot more pages to list.

Lastly, although I didn't find myself agreeing with all his
points, many of them got me to revisit some of my previously-held
beliefs, such as this one on conservatism:

* There are important reasons, I think that conservatives got feisty
and started throwing their weight around. Liberals started it! Religious
conservatives only became a political force after liberals began
imposing their vision of morality on society. Liberals are the ones,
after all, who thought it was a good idea for grade school kids to put
condoms on bananas. So evangelicals responded with their own
version of sex in the classroom: lectures on abstinence. Same with
same-sex marriage: Conservative Christians never thought about
banning it until liberals came up with the idea of legalizing it.

Regardless of your political affiliation, I strongly encourage you to
read CRAZIES TO THE RIGHT, WIMPS TO THE RIGHT . . . one thing
I guarantee is that you won't be bored!

4 out of 5 stars Fun read, scathing for both parties.......2007-10-07

If you are a conservative angry with being betrayed by the Republicans or a Libertarian disgusted with the waste of your tax money, then I believe you will enjoy this book while learning a few things. Goldberg effortlessly tears into the Liberals irrational mania of attacking Bush more than our terrorist enemies. He critiques the New York Times for their shameless bias toward Liberals while they run front page news for weeks on an supposed injustice on the way Iraqi prisoners of war are treated, then when a soldier is kidnapped and beheaded it is buried deep in the paper and ran only one time. Who's side are these guys on? Are they insane for comparing Bush to Nazis or do they just not study real life history to understand how the Nazis really were? The author will enlighten you how the Republicans have abandoned conservative principles by pandering to groups with plenty of Pork spending of your tax dollars. The Bush administration has far approved more spending than the Clinton White House did. What are they thinking? This is why the author believes the Democrats won the 2006 six elections and why the Democrats could when the White House in 2008. This book is a call for the Democrats to start thinking again and the Republicans to grow a backbone. Amen Bernard Goldberg, while I am a Libertarian I agreed with this entire book, he also touched on the accountibilty needed in the black community and how the Jews are held to different standards than their Arab neighbors. Buy this book for a good read and to be armed with some good points to make in this war for our national politics.

5 out of 5 stars Snap!.......2007-10-03

Oh, it's "comeuppance time" for those pesky liberals and those wimpy Republicans, and Bernard Goldberg is just the guy to scold both sides of the elitist aisles. The former CBS News correspondent writes what I've been thinking for five or six years--since the Bush administration and its rubber-stamp cronies in Congress started acting like free-spending, pandering liberals--in his hard-hitting yet humorous polemic CRAZIES TO THE LEFT OF ME, WIMPS TO THE RIGHT.

As a conservative libertarian, Goldberg (and millions of the rest of us) is fed up with insipid, visceral liberalism--aided and abetted by the mainstream media. The left is fair game, and Goldberg doesn't disappoint as he crtitiques liberal wool-gathering on several issues, including affirmative action, racial profiling, national security, taxation. . .even the liberal culture of hatred and intolerance.

Yet he's just getting started; Goldberg saves his best blows for the Republicans (not conservatives, mind you) who have "sold out." Abandoning their conservative principles and ideals, the Washington establishment Republicans lost Congress in 2006 by pandering to special interests, through corruption, by trolling for votes with taxpayer dollars, by record spending, and by "wimping out" to the left. If the Republicans do not heed the "wakeup call" of 2006, Goldberg warns, they run the risk of losing their conservative base (hear, hear!).

This is a fun read; Goldberg writes in a witty, conversational style, which makes for a fast page-turner. CRAZIES TO THE LEFT OF ME, WIMPS TO THE RIGHT pulls no punches and takes no prisoners; it's a common sense critique of the nonsense and bitter partisanship polluting our culture--penned by an author unafraid to call 'em as he sees 'em.

1 out of 5 stars Hard to Swallow.......2007-09-30

Bernard Goldberg never fails to disappoint at disappointing and this is evidenced by his crafty title in which he says both sides of the coin are on the wrong track, but one will soon note that left are crazy, or hopeless, while the conservatives only have to regain their courage and principle. The implication is the that they are obviously the sane ones.

Otherwise the title will not throw off the discerning reader who soon notices that Goldberg makes non-sequitirs, comparisons of convenience, and generalizations, usually about what liberals are thinking or doing, and they have it all wrong. His narrative is as profound as a sidewalk rain puddle is deep, and his conclusions, while some crazy (sorry) are about as original as a child who wants to dress up for Halloween as a ghost.

Some of these shallow comparisons include all liberals as unable to forgive Mel Gibson for his anti-Semitic tirade but were wailing that a convicted killer was executed. Goldberg goes on to question if the liberals ever knew the names of the victims, which in his eyes proves what, he doesn't say. The reader is supposed infer that liberals don't care about the murdered, or not as much as the murderer. Sheer nonsense!

The low point for me was his suggestion that abu Ghraib not being like a Soviet Gulag. Point made. Nevertheless, it didn't have to become a gulag to provide al-Qaeda an enormous propaganda victory and perennial recruiting poster that undercut the moral probity and justification for war in the first place. If Goldberg is not pooh-poohing the suffering and indignities that would make our blood boil if it had been our troops, he makes a connection of convenience that caring about our treatment of prisoners is more important to liberals than the support of our soldiers. I would hope someone would give him a copy of "Oath Betrayed" by Steve Miles, M.D.

If this is part of the author's attempt at humor, it went over my head. It soon became clear that he might be trying to emulate some of his more controversial and conservative fellow pundits with vapid statements that could inflame because of their insensitivity and supersciliousness.

This continues throughout the book, one after another, and space does not allow to add his thoughts on Hurricane Katrina, racial profiling, and other topics which border on the absurd.

The one genius Goldberg shows is his ability to market this fare which has no academic or qualitative value. It's as if he's selling hamburger and calling it steak.

Do yourself a favor, and drown this one in steak sauce.

Either way, it's hard to swallow.

5 out of 5 stars Fun with Goldberg.......2007-09-21

It is always a pleasure to read anything by Bernie Goldberg, if for no then reason then because of the wit and humor that he brings to the discussions of contemporary issues. This is a very varied account of many of his personal gripes that he has with both left and the right in the US, but at the final analysis it is still the right that comes somewhat ahead, although it would seem it is primarily because they are better at not getting their foot stuck in their mouth as often as the liberals seem to be doing these days. One of the main things that Goldberg has an issue with is the lack of civility that goes on in public discourse, regardless of if it has to do political speech or just general politeness in everyday life. It is to Bernie's credit that he succeeds at dismantling those he disagrees with without having to resort to cheap ad hominem attacks and vicious recriminations. It would be great if some other best-selling authors followed in his footsteps. Otherwise, we may have to wait for another book by Bernard Goldberg.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book; one reservation.......2006-08-29

After spending some time in West Africa where I came across many inspirational Rastas, I came back to America wanting to learn more about this lifestyle. I found Roskind's book to be VERY firsthand and informative; after all, he speaks with dozens of Rastas with a whole range of views on Rastafari and One Love. The book was brilliantly written (with a lot of editing errors, however) and a great read for someone who is a novice to this faith. However, I do have one reservation about the author himself. Throughout the book he and the people he interviews criticize Babylon and all its materialism yet during his many trips to Jamaica he stays at the finest resorts (Babylon), likely owned by white non-Jamaicans (Babylon), and he talks about how he spends days here and there snorkling, laying out, eating, etc. (Babylon). I am not trying to point any fingers, I would just assume that if someone was trying to minimize one's materialistic desires and really experience Rastafari than one would at least stay at less plush resorts - especially when in a developing country. Other than that, an excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Journey.......2006-01-06

Explore Jamaica and Rastafari in this wonderfully written book. Meet rightous Rastas and gain an overstanding of One Love. Take a journey to a wonderful land and meet some beautiful people. Give thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Babylon is Falling.......2005-12-16

If you feel that society has or has not taken a peice of your mind, I would advise you to read this book. I do not feel that it is a book that you can read at once, or once for that matter. I think I am on my third or fourth reread of this book. Roskind takes the power of communication through the Babylon system to prove there is more to what the western world calls life. I picked up the book in a gear issue room from the National Outdoor Leadership School in Conway, WA. I began to read the book outside of civilivation and coming back in to society after reading the tales in Rasta Heart has me looking at the world with a new pair of eyes. As they would say in the book, one love.
