Book Description
This popular Build-It-Yourself (BIY) PC book covers everything you want to know about building your own system: Planning and picking out the right components, step-by-step instructions for assembling your perfect PC, and an insightful discussion of why you'd want to do it in the first place. Most big brand computers from HP, Dell and others use lower-quality components so they can meet their aggressive pricing targets. But component manufacturers also make high-quality parts that you can either purchase directly, or obtain through distributors and resellers. Consumers and corporations alike are opting to build rather than buy PCs to ensure high quality and compatibility.
The new edition of Building the Perfect PC shows you how to construct a variety of top-flight systems with the latest technology, including AMD Socket AM-2 and Intel Core 2 processors, that are Vista- and Linux-ready. The book includes several new options, including:
- A Budget PC you can build for approximately $350 that offers performance and reliability similar to that of mainstream systems
- A full-blown media-center system that runs Linux and MythTV or Windows MCE with multiple tuners and HDTV support
- A fire-breathing high-performance gaming system
- A fast, low-power, low-heat, low-noise, Small Form Factor system (the size of a shoe box)
- A low-cost SOHO (small office, home office) server system with a 2 terabyte (2,000 GB) disk subsystem that's suitable for a residential environment rather than a server closet
Regardless of your technical experience,
Building the Perfect PC will guide you through the entire process of building or upgrading your own computer. You'll use the latest top-quality components, including Intel's Core 2 Duo and AMD's Athlon X2 CPUs. And you'll know exactly what's under the hood and how to fix or upgrade your PC, should that become necessary. Not only is the process fun, but the result is often less expensive and always better quality and far more satisfying than anything you could buy off the shelf.

Great for begginers.......2007-10-10
Greg's review: I think this is a great book for beginners. It would have bean a lot harder to build our first computer without it but if we had already built some computers it would have bean a lot less helpful. It gives you a good amount of information like the price ranges that our best to buy in, what things you should look for in components you are thinking about buying, what different components do, and how to put them all together. It doesn't tell you exactly what to buy and hoe to put it together either it assumes that you will modify there examples to fit your needs better and tell you how. The only bad things about it are that it doesn't tell you how to install an operating system, and some of what it says is a bit old. Unfortunately it would be impossible to make a book that tells you how to make computers which isn't a bit old because computers are getting better so fast.
Dad's review: I think this is a great book for beginners. I would never have had the confidence to go out and buy the parts and build a PC without this kind of help, but I'm happy to say my 10 year old son and I read the book and successfully built a pretty decent computer.
A good thing about this book is that it gives you an explicit list of parts to buy, tailored to the kind of PC you want (budget, mainstream, gaming, media centre etc.). A better thing about this book is that while giving you this list, it talks about the features of motherboards, disk drives, chips, etc. that are important to look for. This means that even though we couldn't find the exact parts they listed (inevitably, because computer hardware evolves so quickly), we knew enough about what we were looking for that we could find closely similar parts and make good choices of alternatives.
One thing I think this book could add is a brief discussion of installing an operating system, since without an OS, even if you have done everything else correctly, you still just have a fancy paperweight not a working computer. We installed Ubuntu linux. It was free, easy to download, installed and ran perfectly with no special knowledge on our part in under half an hour.
For the previous poster who complained the book was out of date, I think he had the first edition (2004) not the second (2006).
Good but............2007-07-31
It's soooo outdated and nothing about sound cards and/or video cards for gamers. Yes it was only published (available to the public) in 2004 which wa sonly 3 years ago however, in computers especially build your own, that was ions ago. The book gives you the basics as well as some advanced material in order for you to do it yourself. It's a good book however if your into gaming machines its not listed in it. This is a good start book to give you some basics of he inside of the computer and some terminology.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-07-12
Do you want to build a PC for personal or business use? If you do, then this book is for you. Authors Barbara Fritchman Thompson and Robert Bruce Thompson, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that is your guide to the world of building PCs.
Thompson and Thompson, begin by focusing on things you need to know, things you need to have, and things you need to do before you start to buy components and build your new PC. Then, the authors tell you everything you need to know about how to choose and buy the components you need to build your new PC. Next, they show you how to build a general-purpose PC that is a jack of all trades and a master of... well, quite a few, actually. The authors also focus on building a reliable, high performance SOHO server, appropriate for anything from an inexpensive server for a home office to a serious server for a small-business network. They continue by showing you how to build a gaming PC on a reasonable budget. Then, the authors show you how to build a PC that provides TiVo-like DVR functions, without the monthly subscription or the DRM features common to commercial PVR units. Next, they show you how to build a full-featured PC that is small enough and quiet enough to fit in almost anywhere. Finally, the authors show you how to build a fast, reliable PC on a minimum budget.
The goal of this most excellent book is to show you how to select the best components and assemble them into a working PC that matches your own requirements and budget. Perhaps more importantly, this book provides the advice and ideas that you need to make the net PC you build the perfect PC for your needs.
Well worth the price for the advice.......2007-07-07
I just noticed that the current edition is a revision of the one I bought from Amazon! Having said that, I'd be surprised if the quality and wisdom changed materially, and here is what I mean.
Using Thompson's book, I've built with both of my children the Home Theater PC and the Gaming PC. Both work like a champ. I'd add that much like the way the Thompson's structure each chapter, determine what you need, making a list, constructing the CPU, and what the outcome was: was our experience as well. Sometimes, the available parts just aren't. Sometimes there are driver issues and conflicts that you don't expect and it's not as though the Thompson's can know everything before the book was printed.
Some one whined a bit about the website in another review. I'd counter that with the affirmation of those who are in forum answer questions that are placed on the bottom shelf for novice builders like my family, as well as answer some truly arcane questions for advanced builders and hardware developers! That the website has "dated material" regarding hardware might be a no-brainer, but asking questions in the forum will quickly provide anyone with updates regarding anything related to hardware, drivers, and known conflicts between components.
In the build of the HT PC, we started out with an ASUS board that was (I think) recommended. But, the Plextor DVD wasn't recognized in the install. My daughter and I searched far and wide for a solution. One of the many responses to our post in the forum came in an answer from Robert Thompson, who provided the options for us regarding solutions.
The book possesses the same kind wisdom and availability to any builder from Thompson. He passes along some advice about what you can get away with in a build regarding tools-I won't disclose that secret- and just some "watch-out's" that will keep your build from becoming accidentally expensive, e.g., trying to insert the processor with the wrong orientation or incorrect application of the heat transfer paste to the processor. I'm likely to buy this new edition for the next build.
Great build instructions, lacks the final touch.......2007-07-01
This is a great book. It got me excited as hell about building my own system. Since this was the first time I built a PC, I decided to pretty much follow very closely the bill of material listed as one of the options, but there were still some subtle differences that I had to sweat over. Many of the pictures of the motherboard, for example, were actually from a different engineering revision of the board that I bought, so the exact locations of connectors will be different from any board manufactured after mid 2007.
A note to one of the authors referred me to join a discussion website, which was a little disappointing since I believe the answer should have been known.
This book is very up to date, very insightful, it has tips and tricks that only can be learned after many years of experience, and is very well written.
I would recommend that a first time builder also buy Rosenthal's "Build Your Own PC". This book is a little more ancient, but it has interesting history about PC components, and it shows another point of view on the same subject. It also includes more info on the CMOS setup and installing the OS, which is just as important as the physical build if you want your computer for more than just a decoration.
Book Description
Explore how these therapeutic practices can enhance your work as a residential youth care worker!
The Residential Youth Care Worker in Action: A Collaborative, Competency-Based Approach will help youth care workers administer psychotropic medications, understand psychiatric labels, handle crisis and staffing, and give accurate assessments. Emphasizing ideas that focus on the strengths and abilities of young people from the assessment phase of treatment through discharge, this guidebook will help you take the views and actions of youths into consideration from a change-oriented perspective in order to offer your clients appropriate services.
The Residential Youth Care Worker in Action serves to fill in the gap between therapists and residential youth care workers (RYCWs) by emphasizing ideas that therapists have been using for years. This resourceful book takes a relatively new direction in the field by focusing on competency-based as opposed to problem-focused methods. Many of the major concerns that you face as a youth care worker are addressed with easy-to-learn and use therapeutic ideas, suggestions, new approaches, and techniques that are demonstrated through case illustrations. Some of these competency-based ideas include:
focusing on what is changeable for youths as opposed to what is not
exploring how you can use language to convey respect and facilitate change by focusing on a youth's possibilities instead of his or her past behavior
using solution talk instead of problem talk, such as saying a youth is very energetic at times instead of hyperactive
respecting young people, their viewpoints, and experiences to create a context and climate that is conducive to change
exploring future roads with possibilities by helping young people create compelling futures,
dissolve barriers, and take action toward those preferred futures
managing crisis intervention while simultaneously allowing youth to keep their pride
helping young people realize their accountability within the roles of both psychotropic medications and psychiatric labels
The Residential Youth Care Worker in Action explains several approaches that you can use to positively impact the lives of the young people in your residential facility. Complete with handouts and diagrams such as a post-crisis debriefing form, a level promotion petition form, and a weekly success chart that can be reproduced and used in various residential programs, The Residential Youth Care Worker in Action will help you create a positive atmosphere for youths and prepare them for a successful future.

Living Well With Macular Degeneration by Rosenthal et al........2003-10-03
The authors explain how to manage macular degeneration.
This can be done nutritionally by increasing beta carotene and
zinc which tends to deplete with advanced age. The authors
explain the benefits of increasing the intake of fruits and
dark green vegetables. We are asked to reduce or eliminate
smoking , as well as excess dietary fats. The authors
mention a number of recent scientific modalities to stabilize
vision. The PDT or photodynamic therapy is presented as a
hopeful protocol which utilizes light frequencies in order
to deal with stabilizing vision. The book is an excellent
reference for health buffs desiring to improve or stabilize
eyesight in the middle years or in anticipation of problems
which may develop in older age patients.

The remarkably talented, if previously neglected, African American painter Bob Thompson (1937-1966) finally has his day in the sun. This excellent book, published to accompany an important exhibit at New York's Whitney Museum, tells the story of an artist who overdosed on heroin at age 29, but not before leaving many dozens of excellent canvases, mostly inspired by the mythological scenes of classical painters like Poussin. Subjects such as Mars and Venus and The Massacre of the Innocents show Thompson's fascination with the artistic past, and the very personal variations of this essentially self-taught painter have a winning energy and skill. His portraits of friends such as Leroi Jones and Allen Ginsberg are less outstandingly original, recalling the work of New York painters like Alice Neel. Art historians Thelma Golden and Judith Wilson are well informed about Thompson's artistic and literary contacts, his trips to Europe for inspiration, and his appetite for European culture--which make his life all the more tragic in its brevity. Still, his exuberantly graceful and colorful canvases remain, and these are well reproduced in the present book. Elegance of gesture was of primary importance to Thompson, and his works kept on improving until the very end. He was an important American painter, and fully worthy of the attention he is at long last getting. This book will intrigue anyone interested in modern figurative art. The only disappointing element is the brief and somewhat confused notes on individual paintings. Otherwise, this is a very useful title, whether or not one has visited the Whitney retrospective. --Benjamin Ivry
Book Description
Bob Thompson (1937-1966) was a figurative expressionist painter active in literary, musical, and artistic circles in New York and Europe from the late 1950s until his death in 1966. In the first book devoted solely to Thompson, the life and work of this pivotal figure in modern American art history and African American culture receive the attention they deserve.
Judith Wilson situates Bob Thompson within the context of both contemporary artistic production and cultural trends of the fifties and sixties. She uses interviews, Thompson's diary entries and letters to his family, and his work to give a thoughtful and thorough interpretation of his art and persona. She traces Thompson's development--psychologically, socially, and artistically--effectively portraying his first encounters with art and bohemian culture and his intensely active period in Europe shortly before his death in Rome at the age of 29.
Bob Thompson's life intersects several important currents in recent American culture, and his work reveals an unfinished quest for communal identity, says Wilson. His use of postmodern techniques of appropriation and pastiche embraced both the Western tradition and cultural resources specific to the African American experience. The publication of Bob Thompson recognizes the important role of the artist in the vanguard of twentieth-century American art.

Stimulatingly interesting vision.......2001-04-06
This is the definitive catalogue of the African American artist Bob Thompson's work. If you are familiar with his work or are interested in discovering the work of this artist, this is really the only collection with any substantial visual volume for an overview. I actually didn't find the text to be as intrusive as has been suggested by the above reviewer. Reviews are good, but always review the item for yourself if you are truly interested.
Befuddled neofeminist interpretation mars the beauty........1999-04-27
The text in this admittedly beautiful volume takes away from the beauty of the artist's work. Would have been better without the essay!

WHOA, THE PRICE! NO EARTH-SHATTERING BLUEPRINT HERE.........2003-05-24
...especially not anything you would not be much better off simply scouring the net for. Which happens to be FREE and sports a truckload of such putative blueprints, best practices, ROI enablers, success stories and whatNot -- CRM Guru, CRM Forum, CRM Daily ...ad infinitum. If your reasoning is to skip the information overload and bag all the available wisdom in one neatly bound huggable volume, you'd still do better to look elsewhere, there is easily a wild smattering of CRM wisdom in books that cost a decent coin instead of the Four Seasons price on this tome. After all, it is only fair to expect some ROI on reading dollars, no?
The Straight Skinny.......2003-01-11
Dick Lee and Bob Thompson are two names that have been around the CRM space for years. But more than their tenure, they're noted for their straight talk and solid opinions. 'Blueprint for CRM Success' continues this no-nonsense tradition.
First, you'll learn CRM is not just software and is not just about technology. Beyond this however are clear step by step guidelines for instituting change and implementing a CRM culture as well as application.
Part II's 'Blueprint for CRM Success' and Part IV's 'Customer-centric Strategies' alone are worth the price of admission!

NPSBookie order # 464878 One book, TEXAS ON THE PLATE arrived in a tiemly fshion. However, the spine was broken, and prompt communications from NPSBookie offered a refund since they had no other copy for exchange. I countered with request for a discount. They agreed to a $3.00 discount, and I accepted since I could use the book personally rather than gift as I had anticipated.
Texas Culinary Explosion.......2003-07-15
Terry Thompson-Anderson has produced a marvelous collection of Texas recipes, beautiful photos of food and scenery from around the Lone Star state, and a wonderful contribution to the exciting new Texas cuisine that is sweeping the southwest and beyond. As a native Texan I found the book not only a delight to the eyes, but a wondrous and far-ranging assortment of recipes with ingredients and influences from all over the state. Of special note are such heady entrees as the "Slow-Smoked Quail on Savory Bread Pudding withThree-Chili Sauce" (using Scamorza Cheese from the Mozzarella Company in Dallas) and the "Grilled Medallions of Venison Backstrap with Ancho Chili and Honey Sauce" - fabulous! Throughout there are wine recommendations from the growing number of Texas wineries; definitions of cooking terms and ingredients; and a "Texas Cook's Pantry" telling where to find hard-to-get ingredients. Texas on the Plate is a delight to use and a pleasure to read.
A Fabulous Gift.......2002-10-29
The recipes are wonderful and the book itself full of gorgeous photos, drawings and, in general, just wonderfully produced. I'm buying several for Christmas gifts for out-of-state relatives and friends. I'm new to the state and this is a fabulous introduction to the food and customs.
Definitely goes "beyond bbq and chili" to wonderful fusion of the traditional and the most up-to-date. You will not be sorry you bought this.

Having been born in Texas and raised on the variety of foods available here, I love how these recipes take it to a higher level. The recipes are perfect...though not always easy, they are always worthy of the effort. I made the cover dish first thing and got raves from all who ate it. Very Poor and devoid of any useful information.......2007-01-21
I bought this book with high hopes, but it turns out that it does not live up to the reputation of its authors. I was hoping that it is similar to Gonzalez's book except that it covers mixed mode and diff. circuits. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and no where near that. There is no real information about how to use the S-parameters to perform impedance matching...the book resorts to Y and Z parameters. I did not purchase this expensive book to read about Y and Z parameter matching.
Book Description
"I can no more think of my own life without thinking of wine and wines and where they grew for me and why I drank them when I did and why I picked the grapes and where I opened the oldest procurable bottles, and all that, than I can remember living before I breathed."
With this remarkable sentence, M.F.K. Fisher opens this abundant book, in which forty-four of the most knowledgeable winemakers and wine authorities explore the achievement of California wine from the Mission days to the present. Fisher's reminiscence on the honest wines she has enjoyed over seven decades is followed by an astute essay by the noted wine critic Hugh Johnson showing how the new style of California winemaking has changed the world's way of thinking about California wine--and California's way of thinking about itself. In other original essays eight winemakers, several historians and wine critics, a gifted cook, a doctor, a plant geneticist, corkscrew and label collectors, and a score of other experts discuss the many dimensions of California wine, give guidance on tasting, and evaluate the wine and wineries.
This lavishly produced volume was set on a Mergenthaler Linotron 202, using a Mergenthaler digital adaptation of Plantin. The jacket and endpapers were printed by Max Strassman, Mastercraft Press, San Francisco, on Thistle Multicolor, a paper manufactured for and distributed by Process Materials Corporation, Rutherford, New Jersey. The book was printed and bound by Kingsport Press, and Arcata Graphics Company, Kingsport, Tennesee. Printing was by offset lithography on a six-color web-fed press. Text paper stock, milled for this book, is Penn Text Laid, 70 pound weight, manufactured by the Penn Tech Mill, Johnsonburg. The book is bound in Buntgewebe 300 binding cloth, made by Vereinigte Goppinger Bamberger Kaliko GmbH of Bamberg, Germany. Book design is by Ernest Born, who drew the large roman numbers in chapter headings and several items of ornamental and geometric character that are found scattered throughout the volume, sometimes in association with incidental illustrations and supportive technical captions.

A book for wine collectors.......2007-09-17
There are many books on wine, so how do you choose and why would you buy this one?
Some of the books you find will be encyclopedic and this one is certainly that. Its well researched, noted and written with depth of knowledge. You will not find many like this.
You can find books that are copious in their noteworthiness, but this book is noteworthy in California wines. It is solely dedicated to that interest, is actually an early benchmark of that standard and does not waiver from that cause.
Many books come along on such topics, but this is a good collection piece for wine enthusiasts. When this book arrived it was a true authority and it still stands in line among the many better books in criticism, history and appreciation of the California wine experience. If you ever just had to get that bottle of wine, perhaps you should consider getting this book.
