Book Description

This encyclopedia is a biographical dictionary of some 1,000 women artists of the American West. The product of a twenty-year, coast-to-coast research project by authors Phil Kovinick and Marian Yoshiki-Kovinick, it offers accurate, concise introductions to women painters, graphic artists, and sculptors, all of whom achieved recognition as depictors of Western subjects between the 1840s and 1980. Their styles range from representationalism to early modernism, while their works depict everything from bold landscapes and scenes of intensive action to studies of Native Americans, pioneers, ranchers, farmers, wildlife, and flora.

5 out of 5 stars The History of Comics.......2007-08-14

I bought this book because I wanted a guide of comics but all the comics, marvel, dc, image, dark horse, press, etc, and this book has that.

3 out of 5 stars A decent comic encyclopedia that gears mostly towards the golden age........2007-02-14

As with most of these comic book/fantasy "guides" or "encyclopedias", such a huge task is bound to end up with a few factual errors and typos. There are certainly a few of those here in this book. For instance, Ron Goulart mentions that Jim Lee helped launch X-Men, Vol. 2 in 2001 (a full ten years after it originally happened). Such a mistake would probably fall in the "typo" category, but still pretty silly nonetheless.

The author admits that he grew up reading comics during it's "golden age", and it shows as this book *mostly* focuses on the industry throughout the late 20s-50s, and seems to completely forget all but the truly major top-selling characters of the 60s onward. But this indeed the "Comic Book Encyclopedia" because all years are represented, up to about 2001, it's just that the golden age seems to be the primary focus. Reading many entries in this book, I often wondered if Goulart was simply inserting his own favorites from his childhood into the book, because many of these characters and titles I had never heard of, even though I am a fan of that era. He seems to showcase the most obscure of companies, creators, and books even for the 30s & 40s.

Also at times Goulart seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder and may make remarks in regards to how underrated or overrated an artist or writer was, going as far to call out certain artists by speaking of how poor their style is.

But don't get me wrong, this encyclopedia is a joy to read. There's a great use of artwork here in relations to characters, comic book covers, and a creator's work. Having been born in 1981, I still have great interest in all those comic book years before me and I really enjoy reading about and seeing the artwork of the books of the 30s and 40s and 50s. So as long as you're not expecting an overview covering the New Avengers, X-Men, JLA, and Batman universes exclusively and don't mind catching up on the golden age, this is a very good book to pick up for fans of comics in general.

3 out of 5 stars found a few mistakes..........2006-04-18

I skimmed through this book, which I fortunately bought from SFBC instead of a book store or Amazon, and found at least three errors.

Basically, don't count on this book to be 100% factual.

4 out of 5 stars Superficial but beautiful.......2005-08-29

The graphics are simply outstanding and worth the price of the book alone. The text is something else, though. It's pretty superficial for the most part, and it misses some influential artists such as Gahan Wilson, Roy Krenkel and Edward Gorey (yes, I know they weren't really comic book artists, but they're so famous and their influence so profound they should have been included). For the most part I'd say this is light, enjoyable reading, certainly nothing in depth, but again, the graphics are just simply gorgeous.

3 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Light Study of Comic Books.......2005-08-21

The Comic Book Encyclopedia is a good light reference book to have. Is it an in depth comprehensive reference manual, for the professional researcher? No. But one of this book's best features is the ability to give some direction to more focused comprehensive research. Specific targeted areas and ample availability of keywords and keyword phrases, will help immensely with an Internet search.

If you understand anything about marketing at all, you know that packaging is half the battle. This book is packaged extremely well. It has great visuals on the front and back covers. Be wary though, and accept the book for its general lighthearted nature.

There is a useable informative timeline of comic book evolution, located inside the front and back covers. But there is no table of contents, which would have been extremely helpful. The index is available, but many times a table of contents is of better use to me.

If this book is purchased from Amazon, it is a lot cheaper than running down to a local bookstore. And if you would like to learn more about comic books or want a general reference resource, I would recommend this book. If more in depth comic book knowledge is wanted, this book is also a good starting point.

As a website builder of "www.comic-book-collection-made-easy.com", it has helped me with content and direction into further research. So I have not regretted my purchase. There are better reference materials and websites available though, for the more experienced comic book connoisseur.

Influences

A Lexicon of Contemporary Graphic Design Practice

Influences looks at who and what is influencing, provoking, inspiring and informing graphic designers' working methods and research processes today. Two hundred of the best established and up-and-coming graphic designers around the world were asked about their influences. Their responses reveal the hidden catalysts that motivate and propel designers. The entries show the range of preparatory work and intensive research that forms the backbone of any creative project.

From Charles and Ray Eames to John Cage, teaching to yawning, money to plumbing, Braun Amplifier to the Brannock Devise, Frank Zappa to Ghandi, Gridnik to kidney stones, Charlie Chaplin to Kraftwerk - the designers' collected answers show the influences driving contemporary graphic design practice.

Taking the form of a lexicon, this dictionary of graphic design influences and references is structured in two parts - the main part lists the responses from each designer shown alphabetically while an appendix at the end of the book includes the designers with references to their answers and biographies. The book gives detailed insight into the daily working processes of designers with short entertaining texts getting to the root of their passion and creative conviction.

Influences is created by Anja Lutz, a Berlin-based graphic designer, founder of the shift-platform and co-initiator of The Green Box and Anna Gerber, a London-based graphic designer and journalist currently teaching at Martins College of Art & Design and the London College and writing for magazines including Eye, Print and Idea.

5 out of 5 stars encyclopedic reference to the field of contemporary graphic arts.......2007-01-03

Though arranged alphabetically like an encyclopedia or dictionary, this "Lexicon" is really a work to be read, not only used as a reference. For the influences on the graphic design which has come to be a major influence in postmodern culture as evidenced in advertising, web pages, and fashion, for example, are, as one comes to realize from the innumerable entries, more wide-ranging than one would conceive. The countless examples of graphic design--ones taken for granted, some surprising, and others provocative--definitely expand a reader's awareness of the design on one's environment while also educating one about its sources and features. References to magazines, individual art works (e. g., Ed Ruscha's print "1984"), fiction writers (e. g., Philip K. Dick), films, and artists from all fields from all ages, etc., convey the cultural riotousness of postmodernism and also expound graphic design which is its characteristic type of expression. Even a reference to the tennis star John McEnroe is worked in for the effects of his flamboyant, sometimes confrontational behavior on one graphic artist. The format of most of the entries is a definition or identification followed by quotes from one or more of over 150 graphic artists currently working in countries around the world. These artists are listed in the Appendix with brief biographies. Along the top of many pages, as a border, are photographs and illustrations of the times' ubiquitous graphic arts.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Paperback, info is encyclopedic, photos are good sample.......2007-03-28

It does feel comprehensive, with a paragraph on each of the homes he designed. Thank goodness for the size. At 12" tall it can accomodate lots of big color photos. There's about 15 photos that fill the page and another 15 that cover both facing pages. Excellent usage of the size. There is a key system for the listings, Buildings: Private, Religious, Corporate, Public, Commercial or Civic. And keys for Textile Block, Solar Hemicycle, Usonian, Prairie, Demolished, Planned/never built, Remodeled/altered/reconstructed, Exposed concrete black, Desert rubblestone, General information. Once you get it down it does help identify these various categories more readily. There's a 56 page Chronology listing in the back that uses the key code plus distinguishes between houses built and plans or projects as well as some small photos.

The information is comprehensive without being very in depth while also being quite interesting. Twenty-two structures are with numerous photos and further information from about 4 to 10 pages each. It really is an enjoyable book. I feel like I want to give it 4 1/2 stars because it doesn't feel like a masterpiece. But I'll gladly err on the side of 5 over 4 because it really does cover a wide range and I could keep reading it over years learning new things about his various buildings accompanied by very pleasant pictures almost all in color. chrisbct@hotmail.com

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely!.......2003-02-24

We collect books on FLW's work, and this one is particularly beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful photographs-leave you wanting more information.......2001-01-05

An encyclopedia gives brief information on a subject. This one is no different. Sometimes however, I was left wanting to know the significance of the work. What was it that stood out about Mr. Wright's accomplishment on a particular work. The pictures were very nice but left me craving more information and more detailed pictures of the same house or building. This book is a wonderful start and quick reference with good cross links higlighted in each description. You will be left wanting more information however.

2 out of 5 stars Misses its mark.......2000-06-29

This could be a valuable book, but its worth is diminished by a fairly large number of mistakes. Buildings are mis-identified. Some photos of Wright's decorative features are printed upside down. Other photos are backwards. Several of the aerial views are dramatic, but others seem to be space fillers. One in particular of Forest Avenue in Oak Park shows no details of the homes except for the roofs. With a bit more care in the choice of prints, the photos could have a far greater impact on the reader's understanding of Wright's design genius.

5 out of 5 stars very nice book.......2000-03-07

    Book Description

The first volume of An Encyclopedia of Archetypal Symbolism was a stunning collection of color images and text organized around mythic themes that follow the solar calendar from cosmos and creation to death, transformation, and rebirth. In this second volume, the focus is the human body as a carrier of deep psychological insights and sacred meanings. Whether idolized or abused, the body is the object of much fascinated attention, even obsessive preoccupation, in the contemporary Western world. What has been missing from our culture's preoccupation is an appreciation of the body's organs as symbols of the deepest contents of the human psyche. This book surveys the richness of meaning found in a wide range of beautiful sacred images from the world's traditions and explains what the symbolism of our physical form teaches us about the inner realities of our consciousness, spirit, and divine essence.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Work in the Jungian Tradition.......2005-08-10

George Elder was one of my professors of religion back in the 1980s. I have not seen him since then, but in discovering and reading through this work I could hear pieces of his lectures project from its pages, and recall the calm cadence of his voice during discussions of comparative religion, Christian theology, Freud and Jung. Although at the time I had not warmed-up to Jung (I was young and foolish, I suppose), I have since developed a great appreciation for both Jung and George Elder's lectures and vast learning.

The Body is written in accessible and easy language, inviting all to explore its pages, which are filled (as befits a Jungian perspective) with provocative, archetypal imagery from across the spectrum of culture and religious thought, and across time. The book's size may suggest it is a "coffee table" volume, but it is far from it. However, those who would place it on their coffee tables may be wise - for their guests will, upon flipping through its pages, be pulled into a different world. They will be introduced to Jung's psychology and thought in the most seductive way, and I think they will have a hard time remembering the original purpose of their visit. And if they look closely and if there is time enough, they will see themselves, or at least that part of themselves that stares out from behind the mask of civility, reason, and control.

Glad to see Dr. Elder is still in the game, and better than ever.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece In More Ways Than One!.......2000-10-14

This is a beautiful book! Each aspect of the body, from the first chapter on the "Primordial Body," though the chapters on the bones, blood and systems of bodily functions, to the final chapter "Transformed Body," is covered in painstaking attention to detail. Each chapter is preceded by several lines of appropriate verse from a wide variety of authors and poets and includes many essay entries relating to the chapter's theme. For instance, the chapter on the eye begins with verse from Meister Eckhart and Ralph Waldo Emerson and includes the essays "The Eye of God," "The Eye of Horus," "A Cyclops," the "Conversion of St. Paul" [who was blinded by the light of Christ] and many other entries on the eye. The chapter on the skin begins with verse from Akiko Yosano and Peter Meinke and includes the essays "White Tara," the "Black Virgin of Einsiedeln," a "Tattooed Couple" and "Job Suffering from Boils," among other entries. Additionally, each of Dr. Elder's wonderfully articulate essays is accompanied by an appropriate, beautiful and interesting image. The image is first described in detail and then discussed in terms of cultural context, archetypal and psychological meaning. There is also a bibliography at the end of each entry. I would recommend this book for just about anyone! Whatever your profession or interests, this book is an endless source of information and fascination. The beauty of this book is its ability to garner acceptance for the body in its many shapes, sizes and colors, its peculiarities and quirks and even its defects! I guarantee, this book will not stay on your coffee table gathering dust.

        Book Description

Encyclopedia of Jewish American Artists presents over 80 nineteenth- and twentieth-century Jewish American artists, ranging from the critically neglected Theresa Bernstein, Ruth Gikow, and Jennings Tofel, to the well-known Eva Hesse, Roy Lichtenstein, and Larry Rivers. The subject matter of some of these artists may surprise readers. Adolph Gottlieb designed and supervised the fabrication of a thirty-five foot wide, four-story high stained glass facade for a synagogue; Louise Nevelson sculpted a Holocaust memorial; and Philip Pearlstein painted a version of Moses with the Tablets of the Law early in his career. Covering painters, sculptors, printmakers, and photographers, as well as artists who engage in newer forms of visual expression such as video, conceptual, and performance art, the book is in part intended to stimulate further scholarship on these artists. When appropriate, entries reveal the influence of the Jewish American encounter on the artists' work along with other factors such as gender and the immigrant experience. In many cases, the artists' own words are employed to flesh out perspectives on their art as well as on their Jewish identity. To that end, the volume contains excerpts from recent interviews conducted by the author with some of the artists, including Judy Chicago, Audrey Flack, Jack Levine, and Sol LeWitt. Illustrations accompanying each artist's entry, some in color, aid this invaluable look at Jewish American art.
