What Not to Wear
from one of fashion's
most enduringly

From Accessories to Zippers, Madame Dariaux imparts her pearls of wisdom on all things fashion-related -- and also offers advice on other crucial areas in life from shopping with girlfriends (don't) to marriage and sex.

Want casual, look elsewhere.......2007-10-15
Many of the reviews seem to be of women wanting something a bit more casual and "10 piece wardrobe" in it's approach to elegance, if so...this is NOT the book for you. Pick another title.
The focus and intent of this book is aimed at how to dress semi-to-fully formal from an era were almost every woman wore white gloves as basic clothes and almost nobody (including kids) wore gym shoes outside of a gym. This is not to say the book is "outdated" by any means, it's to say that "What Not To Wear" type casualness (it's extremely casual compared to the book's focus) is not the goal here.
Madame Dariaux's aims can work in the present time for a woman who wants to know how to dress formally or appropriately for more formal occasions (ie weddings, lunches at fancy eateries, parties, and the like) and/or a woman who likes a more "retro" style of dress in her daily life. It's full of useful information about garments and accessories that many women no longer wear and subsequently have no idea of how to wear now. If you purchase this book with these things in mind, you won't be at all disappointed or feel it's outdated. Mme Dariaux is NOT coming from a world where "casual Fridays" existed.
I give this book only 4 stars because of the extremely limited colour schemes suggested....pastels with neutrals as the base. Most women who buy this book will NOT find the pastel palette flattering to them. The palette she gives emphasis (pastel) probably would suit an ashe blonde without much problem, any darker than that and it starts getting iffy. For Black women of almost any shade, the colour scheme will be the least flattering (as an earlier poster mentioned).
A bit dated...needs to be updated.......2007-08-20
I enjoyed the "what not to wear" parts of the book. Although I found it to be incredibly dated. In order to be elegant she has you changing your clothes 5 to 6 times a day. Different outfits for 9,1,3,6,7,8 and 10 p.m. And stocking with seams...hmmmm Do they still sell these? There is some good advice but this book truly needs an update plus if you are not a city dweller spending weekends in the country a lot of this book will not be for you.
A Must read for every woman of evry age!.......2007-08-13
Every mother should give a copy to their daugthers when they graduate college and begin their careers! It should be re-read every 5 years to re-enforce the wonderful concepts and remind us of the parts we may have forgot! As a career woman it her 40's who is moving up the corporate ladder, it has been an wonder source for sharpering my image! Coco Channel said, 'Dress shabbily and they noticce the dress; dress impecibly and they notice the woman.' This book will help all woman be noticed!
Grace and Style are Always in Fashion.......2007-08-10
This book takes hints from days past to give you a guide on being cool, calm and collected. I imagine a Dita Von Teese-type woman when it comes to this book, and I would love to be like this.
This book has become an easy gift for friends -- one that will be appreciated by most any woman who values decorum and class.
Nothing we don't already know !.......2007-08-07
Treat it as fun because it doesn't tell you anything that you don't already know about common sense and the sense of proportion. But it's ideal for tossing around the house and goes well with your Tiffany's publications collection because they have kind of the same colour scheme!

who's who only defines a select few................2007-02-14
This book is for my current designers class. It informs you about allot of mainstream designers, and a couple you may have never heard of. I was somewhat surprised that designers like Roberto Cavalli weren't discussed. and some designers had a really small section of info about them. But overall the info it does have is really interesting.
Book Description
A fun and vibrant celebration of red hats and the women who wear them. On festive display here are some of the most amazing, unique, elegant, and just plain wacky works of millinery art ever designed since the first red hat was donned in 1997. Best of all, the models showing off the impressive headgear are the very inspirational ladies who created them. These women happily offer colorful commentary on their handiwork, from information on the hats’ construction to anecdotes about the reactions they evoke. Irresistible, proud Red Hat hattitude shines through in chapters such as Hoity Toity Crowning Glories, Mad Hatter Tea-Time Toppers, Blooming Brims, and, best of all, Over-the-Top Hats.
An introduction by Founder and Exalted Queen Mother Sue Ellen Cooper (author of the bestselling Fun and Friendship After Fifty) focuses on the history of the hat, fun hat facts, and the basics of embellishing a hat—and the sassy Ruby Red Hat provides amusing narration throughout.

Red Hats and the Women Who Wear Them.......2007-10-01
Great book shows many different hat styles, and how to do them. Really enjoyable for folks who are into Red Hats and making hat designes.
Stylish, Classy, Dynamic...and FUN!.......2007-01-10
I can say nothing but GREAT things about this book. The lovely women of Sterling Publishers(Lark/Chappelle) really capture the essence of Red Hatting. My good friend Lisa and I are both featured in the book, as well as other Red Hat ladies I have come to know over the years. The book is chock full of whimsical creative ideas, inspiring any budding milliner to go for the gusto! The book is also value-priced, making it an ideal gift!
If you are a Red Hatter, this book is a MUST for your library--and...if you are not, this is a fabulous way to find out about all the fun we have!

Customer Reviews:
Great book on history of fashion!.......2005-12-19
I loved Beauty in Exile. A friend told me about it. I was researching my aunt, who was a model in Paris. I discovered her world through the information this book contains. I had no idea to what extent fashion was dominated by Russian emigres in the 20s and 30s. I knew they were seamstresses and models, but had no idea they started fashion houses as well. Anyone interested in the history of fashion should own Beauty in Exile. The photos are sensational. I bring the book out to show friends who come over. I tell them to get their own, rather than borrow it. This book is too precious to risk lending. I might not get it back!
The lost world of Russian Exiles.......2003-07-06
This book covers the now vanished world of Russian exiles from the Revolution till the 1950-60's. It covers such areas as the influence of the Ballets Russies in Paris prior to the revolution, the clothes the exiles bought with themselves, and the importance of the Kokoshnik to Russian fashion design.
We are also given the history of the now vanished Russian émigré communities in Constantinople in Turkey, Berlin in Germany and Harbin in China, with a smaller amount of discussion of the communities in Paris and London.
London and Paris mostly get discussed in context with fashion, as many émigrés, both noble and poor made a living in the various parts of the fashion industry in exile. There is a whole chapter devoted to the house of Kitmr with its exquisite embroideries and beading, which was run by Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna the younger in the 1920's.
The author has also unearthed other Russian émigré fashion houses which were well known and respected in the 1920's but are mostly forgotten now, houses such as Anely, Mode, Paul Caret, Tao, Yteb and Irfe which was run by the Youssoupoff family.
The majority of the book concentrates on fashion, but there is also discussion of the theatre, cafe's and other craft oriented activities which the Russian communities produced, especially in the 1920's. Many years of painstaking research as been conducted by the author to reconstruct this lost world. The book is full of black and white photos, which I imagine would not have been easy to find. However, if you are looking for nice colour photos of Russian costume, you will not find it here, but if you are trying to find something out on the background on émigré communities or the Russian fashion industry in the 1920's this book will be the standard work for many years to come.
Paleolithic Reviewers.......2001-04-27
An appraisal of European culture from an old maid somewhere in Western Kentucky knits a ludicrously inappropriate Horatio Algerish review to satisfy her puritan work ethos, that went out of date with the blue collar culture of 50's America, Honeymooners, Flintstones etc. She could be Pat Buchanans speech writer.

Book Description
From Annette Tapert, the coauthor of the popular
The Power of Style, comes a book that is just as beautiful and entertaining but that redefines an attribute even more intangible. In word and image, it evokes a unique Hollywood era and eleven of its goddesses who lived, and left as their legacy, the Power of Glamour.
When the Glamour Era met the Golden Age of cinema, it cast a spell on a public beaten by the Depression and the threat of war. But the key ingredient in 1930s glamour was personality. Annette Tapert's movie-queen profiles, rich with fresh insights, reach beyond the star-making machinery, fan magazines, fashions, and cosmetics to the essence of each women: the carefully molded image of Gloria Swanson, who started it all . . . Marlene Dietrich's siren persona on and off screen . . . the "reverse glamour" of Katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo. Their power--and that of Joan Crawford, Carole Lombard, Norma Shearer, Claudette Colbert, and the long-neglected Kay Francis, Dolores Del Rio, and Constance Bennett--lay in using style, wit, and guile to outsmart the studio system and enchant the world. In these pages we see how, veiled in intrigue and mystery, they brought glamour very close to its original meaning: witchcraft.

Glamorous Ladies of the Golden Age.......2007-03-27
What a beautiful book! I originally paged thru this during a visit to my salon, and immediately ordered it online. The book profiles many of the most beautiful, glamorous actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age (1920s-1940s), and includes wonderful photos which show off their inimitible fashion sense, esp. Kay Francis, Constance Bennett, and Dolores Del Rio, all of whom are somewhat sadly forgotten today. An excellent book for anyone interested in Hollywood, glamour, and fashion history!
Where Are The Real Glamour Queens????.......2004-10-29
The book literally is a book of only the 30's. If your intrigued by the other decades of hollywood glamour, dont even consider the book. The book sadly totally alienates the true heavy weights such as the queen of glamour Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, even Audrey Hepburn who didnt have overly done style but its subtlness was nice. All in all, if your really intrested in the 30's glamour, go for it, but if you want more than that look else where.
Glamour and stardom galore.......2004-01-26
This gold and sepia book is gorgeous but the title is deceptive. It is a shame to use such a big word as "Glamour" and then narrow down the features to actresses of the decade of the thirties. I agree that all the stars presented, such as Constance Bennett, Joan Crawford, Katherine Hepburn, Gloria Swanson or Claudette Colbert do tipify glamour, but what about mega glamour stars such as Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly? Otherwise, this book is beautiful, lavishly illustrated and well researched.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2002-09-27
Let me begin by saying that, as a huge vintage film fan, any book that features chapters devoted to both Norma Shearer and Kay Francis between its covers is perfect in my opinion. So now that you know that I am not an impartial judge, I have to tell you this book is fabulous. Annette Tapert did not focus on the cliche glamourous women, she focuses on the often times forgotten glamour girls, such as the aforementioned Norma Shearer and Kay Francis, as well as Dolores Del Rio and Constance Bennett. The book has fabulous photographs and a detailed biography of each glamourous woman. And, glamourous they were! All of the women featured here have left their mark on film and fashion through the years and deserve to be recognized as icons of glamour!
Excellentýawaiting a third entry!.......2002-01-31
I thoroughly enjoyed both of Miss Tapert's books, and hope that she is working on a third-perhaps on female writers who influenced style, such as Elinor Glyn, Jackie Susann and George Sand?
I was particularly pleased to see in this book actresses such as Constance Bennett and Kay Francis, who too often are overlooked. The only subject I might quibble with is Garbo, who was notoriously anti-style and anti-glamour in her private life. But that is a very small objection to a delightful and re-readable book!

Customer Reviews:
Simple to read for the average guy.......2007-10-09
For a little over $12, this book gives a lot of info about the different types of clothes/accessories that the average guy would not have been aware of. It simple enough for anyone to read and gives a lot of useful tips without getting into too much detail about useless stuff.
For example, the discussion on different types of pants and when it is appropriate to wear them is really very practical. A highly-recommended book for anyone who wants to improve their wardrobe.
Very Helpful book.......2007-01-13
This book has lots of good advice and helpful tips. It is written in Carson Kressley's inimitable style which means you will laugh out loud at times.
Thank you Carson!.......2007-01-03
I bought this book for my husband. He's an engineer and they have a "uniform" - khaki pants and a golf shirt. I tried for years to upgrade this image, but to no avail. With a recent promotion and some hard earned weight loss, I wanted him to be more knowledgeable about how he gets dressed in the morning. I bought several books on men's fashion, but this is the one he refers to most often. It's simple, straight forward and funny, and it's getting good results. Thank you Carson!
Informative and Funny.......2006-11-01
Karson's Approach is very informative and funny although I might not agree with all of his ideas on styling. I like the fact that he can be very 'in-your-face' but that's great and at least he's being honest with a lot of fashion faux pas that people make.
Which one is this - Remus, or Romulus?.......2006-03-25
Does he BELIEVE he was hired for TV because of his GOOD TASTE? Or just to laugh at in humiliation of him and his "fashion victims"? Obviously Carson is someone raised by wolves, but I do "Lupa" and the boys an injustice by failing to note their superiority.
Just look at the dork! Wearing old lady slippers, and NO SOCKS!
His advice is all on the cover, and looking at it to see what NOT to do is all that's necessary to receive full benefit of the book.

First published in 1993 in France, this English translation of Marie-France Pochna's biography of Christian Dior appears in time for the 50th anniversary of Dior's debut in the world of fashion and coincides with a retrospective of Dior's design work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a biography of the designer, Pochna's book is complete and telling, perhaps not swept up high enough in the airy realms of fashion to please devoted couture mavens but highly informative and interesting for general readers interested in Dior and his impact on the fashion industry. The business of fashion rather than the artistry of Dior's designs is where Pochna directs much of her attention. After all, the marketing and branding that Dior helped initiate was innovative, so discussions of licensing agreements and the development of designer accessories, along with Dior's youthful development and inspirations, blend into a provocative profile of this fashion great.

DIOR.......2006-04-16
Ah, the great Dior, by which all other 20th century designers measured themselves against; from Yves St. Laurant to Coco Chanel, they all viewed Dior as the master. Even today his name is synonymous with style and elegance. This book is thorough and well written, Dior was a fascinating man and he is really fleshed out here. Very good book on a singular talent.
The Best Book on Fashion I have ever read.......2000-03-27
This book opened the world of fashion to me in an intelligent and amusing way. Read it!

Still elegant after all these years.......2007-02-17
I read this book in high school, and found it to be a page turner. Always interested in fashion as most girls were, this book taught me about elegance and chic. I read some passages over and over, and "Elegance" is an education in itself. It should be mandatory reading for every young woman. True, times change, and so have I. But when I think of the trashy examples set for young women today, i.e. Britney, Paris, etc., a little class is a breath of fresh air. I recently bought the updated and very abridged version of "Elegance" and find it an addictive read. Think Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy. You'll feel more elegant just holding this book in your hand.
"Elegance" A Great book that has finally been REPRINTED!!.......2004-01-20
This book is written by the European doyenne of taste and elegance. Now available through Amazon UK for less than $20!
Ms. Dariaux has made the art of elegance and chicness simple by alphabetizing each aspect and making it so easy to use (part of that French chic and elegance, by the way)! Despite the book being somewhat outdated in its attitudes, classic style and elegance are never outdated!
This review is for the reissued 2003 version.......2003-11-24
An updated version of the book that inspired Tessaro's novel `Elegance' this slim little volume packs a fair punch -there is nothing in here you probably couldn't figure out as common sense, but it is good to see it codified and written down in a straight forward manner (and if you don't agree with it, you can always ignore it!) It is even alphabetised for those who need to know something urgently without reading the whole book first!
Madame Dariaux, once Directrice at Nina Ricci, is from the French school of `less is more' - you are better off buying less, but buying quality. While some of her tips may seem a little prescriptive - what colours to wear with others, what shoes to wear with what outfits - she does it all with wry good humour that you just can't help but admire. She covers everything - from what men like, what to wear when you are expecting, how to dress little girls, posture and attitude to the basics such as dresses, shoes, accessories and such - and while some of it comes off as a little dated, it is a book that many women would probably benefit from reading. A little snobbish, very polished, this elegant tome will be welcome advice to some, welcome reassurance to others.
Timeless tale to teach Elegance!.......2003-09-22
Genevive Dariaux wrote this book in the early 60's. It is an alphabetical listing from A - Z describing how one can become an elegant individual. With her classic French style Ms. Dariaux describes many aspects of life and how to handle them in an elegant manner. Topics range from children to pocketbooks to zippers.
Despite having written this over 20 years ago, much of it remains true and useful today.
The book was a hidden gem till Kathleen Tessaro based her fiction novel Elegance on it. Then the price shot up from approximately $20 to the upper $200's with one daring booksite offering it for an astonishing $1,599! No takers I hope for the book is going to be reprinted in November of 2003. In her fiction book Tessaro quotes Dariaux's non-fiction book.
It should be noted that Tessaro with the permission of Ms. Dariaux did change some of what she quoted and updated it in the way she felt Dariaux would have written it, if she had written it today.
Elegance by Dariaux is a timeless read and its hard to find that type of information and instruction on how to be (become)elegant in the books of today.
Another excellent book on Elegance that is much harder to find is A GUIDE TO ELEGANCE by Jacqueline DuPasquier. Written in the 50's, A Guide to Elegance is also a gem if you are lucky enough to find it.
Reprint.......2003-09-21
This is a wonderful book, made popular by the recent publication of Kathleen Tessaro's novel of the same title. American readers may wish to know that this item is being reprinted and is avialable to pre-order from Amazon's UK site.
