Berry could make better use of his knowledge and skill.......2007-10-06

I have to agree with the more negative reviews. There's just too much implausibility. Miles Lord is impossibly naive - for a capable lawyer - and also ridiculously lucky at dodging massive sprays of gunshots. Wouldn't happen, folks. Then, the vaguely supernatural theme of Rasputin's prophecies fulfilling themselves is not attacked as it could be. You'd like to see at least some kind of examination or rationale of how such things could be.

It's a pity, because Steve Berry clearly has lots of in-depth knowledge of Russia, both historical and present-day. Also mostly good writing skill. (Hey, I finished it, even while wishing it was better.) I loved the crisp description of Rasputin: "His blue silk blouse and velvet trousers reeked of alcohol, which tempered his usual stench, one her court ladies had said reminded them of a goat." (And goat-like he was, apparently, in many ways.)

There are some sloppy errors and oddities here and there. Miles is forced to pay a traffic fine of forty roubles, but a few seconds later the officer is pocketing his "forty dollars." Seeing a MacDonald's, the golden arches "harked of safety." Harked?? And "...once the new tsar was coronated" ..."coronated" is a non-word: should be "crowned." Coronation is just the noun matching the verb "to crown."

Some Romanovs are in the country, safe because "no-one beyond courtesans in St. Petersburg knew their faces." Hey, it's probably not their faces that "courtesans" would recognize....He means courtiers, obviously. Odd vocabulary ignorance, unexpected in the generally capable use of language. He thanks one Laura Jorstad for being an "eagle-eyed copy editor." Guess the eagle blinked a few times.

just too implausible to work...........2007-09-24

I just finished The Romanov Prophecy and while it held my interest enough to finish it (mainly because I like novels with some history in them), it's a bit of a let-down. There are too many incredulous escapes for one thing. A major flaw is we never know why the hero is targeted for assassination at the beginning of the novel before he really discovers anything and is in a good and communicative relationship with the villain. Once he discovers a secret, then assasinating him makes sense. Also how thick are you that you can't begin to suspect that you are being betrayed...for all the hero's smarts, he can't at least suspect that someone is giving his location away...and how stupid is it to go to a foreign consulate when your life has been threatened so many times and you don't know whom you can trust (anyone would meet in a public place). And how do those Russian goons get to travel so freely to and in the United States? I'm sorry, Mr. Berry....you need to be a little more logical in your thinking and you would have had a book approaching the Da Vinci Code.

A 21st CENTURY TSAR..........2007-09-15

This is an interesting and enjoyable work of fiction. As with all of the author's works, there is a historical thread that runs through it. Here, the Russian people, sick of its weak post-communist governments, have boldly decided that is time to restore the Romanovs to the throne. Yes, it is time to bring back the tsar.

Having made this monumental decision, the Russians, through a duly selected Tsar Commission, are going to choose their tsar from the distant blood relatives of Nicholas II, the last Romanov to so rule, he and his family having been massacred in 1918. American lawyers, Miles Lord and his boss, Taylor Hayes, are in Russia as advisors to the Tsar Commission, which is charged with interviewing claimants for the throne. The leading contender for selection by the Commission is Stefan Baklanov. Miles Lord is charged with doing a background check on Baklanov, who has connections with many western businesses, many of which are clients of his law firm, to ensure that there is nothing that will impugn his claim to the throne.

In his search, Lord discovers a cryptic prophecy by Rasputin that would seem to imply that the world had not seen the last of the Romanovs. Tantalizing clues in archival material spur Lord to discover more. It seems that there may be a well-guarded historical secret that has the potential to challenge and even derail Baklanov's claim. Many will stop at nothing to keep it from being discovered, which is why Miles Lord now finds himself targeted for death. As he races around Russia, gathering bits of information here and there, the body count mounts with Lord only narrowly avoiding a meeting with the grim reaper. It is, however, only a matter of time before the Romanov prophecy is fulfilled.

This is another action packed page turner by the author. There are many twists and turns in this plot driven book, although it falls somewhat short in terms of character development. Still, the historical details are well-researched. Those who like historical thrillers will find much to enjoy in this book.

Finally! A book that's hard to put down........2007-09-13

I've been searching for a long time for a book that's so intriguing that it's impossible to put down. The last book that did it was Da Vinci Code (note: not to compare these two) and I haven't found another book since. Thank God I found this book at the Borders in Washington Dulles airport. It accompanied me during the 5.5 hour ride and the next day. It's fast-paced, entertaining, and maybe the reason I love it -- full of historical details. I've always loved history and this one is no exception. I'll definitely be checking the author's other books.

Good pseudohistorical thriller.......2007-08-13

"The Da Vinci Code" made popular the pseudohistorical thriller genre. Steve Berry's "The Romanov Prophecy" is set in the near future in a Russia that has elected to bring back the tsar. It looks as if a distant relative to tsar Nicholas II is about to get elected when Miles Lord, an african american lawyer uncovers some papers, including a prophecy by Rasputin, and a letter from Lenin. Before long, Lord is hunted by russian hitmen and, with the help of a beautiful Russian acrobat, needs to find out why, and stop the conspiracy that is about to elect a tsar that will be a puppet for the mafia and international business interests.

In reality, bringing back the tsar may not seem like a good idea, but the story is still interesting. The pace is quick most of the time and the book offers lots of interesting alternate history, albeit (like the Da Vinci Code) based on old ideas.

This is the first book by Steve Berry that I've read and I will probably check out his other books.

It is a whole body position, with vertically aligned shoulders, hips and ankles that creates an S-like shape of the body. The runner then changes the pose from one leg to the other allowing gravity to draw him forward. This creates forward movement, with the least energy cost, and the least effort. The end result is faster race times, easier running and no more injuries!

Many have been asking for this book and are awaiting it eagerly. USA and British Triathlon teams have been working with Dr. Romanov with great success. Scientific research on the Pose Method effects on runners was conducted at the USA Olympic Training Center (Colorado Springs) in 1997, at Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton, FL) in 1998-2001, at Sheffield Hallam University (Great Britain) in 2001, at Kubansky State University (Krasnodar, Russia) in 2002, and at Cape Town University (South Africa) in 2002 with Tim Noakes, author of the Lore Of Running, the runner,s bible. The results of the last research are very impressive. The load on knee joints is reduced 30%, the incidence of other injuries is drastically diminished. The method allows the athletes to run easier, faster, longer, and most significantly, injury free.

Okay, this review will be a little... different. I have a LOT of criticisms against this book, and I will mention them first.

CONs.

1. PRICE. I bet you're all complaining about this ridiculous price, and even after purchasing this book, I still cringe knowing how much I paid for it. Oh, sure, it's worth it (else I wouldn't have given it five stars), but it's just a book, for heaven's sake! I mean, the price is in the range of coffeetable collector-type hardcover books with great pictures. Perhaps the Pose people shouldn't self-publish -- maybe they should get a publisher so that this book will be more in the $14.95 range. Then again, going to a Pose clinic is tons more expensive, but still... it's a high price (and none of that usual "20% off from Amazon" type of discount, too!)

2. OVERLY VERBOSE. Some people say it's "chatty"... well, as chatty as an American can get with a Russian scientist (haha!, sorry, Dr. R!). Then again, Dr. Romanov IS a Russian SCIENTIST, and a running sports scientist at that. But this book is overly verbose. It's about 300 pages. If someone were to make a Cliff's Notes version, the handbook could be condensed to probably about 25 pages or so. But you didn't order a Cliff's Notes version. And yet, I think that a good condensation of this book (not a mere distillation of ideas), and if Dr. Romanov were American or a native English speaker/writer, I think this book could have been done in 200 pages or less. For instance, the first few chapters are trying to convince you that the Pose Method is THE best method of running. Hey, I already bought the book, so could we get on with the details?

But when I say overly verbose, if you think this review is already lengthy, try chatting it up with Dr. Romanov. Go to his website, and see his video segments there that expound on the little details -- and you'll see that even in his videos which are about 3 minutes, someone else could have probably done it in under 2 minutes. Is it because he's Russian and still translating in his head? Could be.

Overly verbose: there's just too much detail that sometimes it gets boring to read, that it detracts from the original idea. However, I'll take that anytime over lacking detail. It's just that it could have been more CONCISE, and still convey Dr. Romanov's ideas completely.

3. PICTURES. There are almost no PICTURES, but there are lots of ILLUSTRATIONS. This is a minor complaint, as the illustrations have a lot of detail and are anatomically correct, but, in this reviewer's opinion, more pictures could have been added (but I guess you could buy the companion DVD, but look at the price on that thing! ... that said, I'll probably order it anyway).

Okay, that was a lot of CONs. Now the PROs: Well, there's only one:

THIS BOOK TEACHES YOU HOW TO RUN CORRECTLY.

I am a firm believer in the Pose method. And guess what? What I spent buying this book, I save on SHOES!!! I now go for racing flats (normally half the price of those ultra-cushioning-structured-high tech shoes). It was a bit hard transitioning to the POSE method, and after my calves were in knots after just a few kilometers (heh! metric system, fellas, METRIC system! haha!), I thought "Man, this Pose method has to make my muscles re-learn how to run... OR, there must be something wrong with what I'm doing." True enough, it was the latter -- I was still pushing off (propulsive action) rather than just free-falling (confused about the terminology? get the book and you'll see what that's all about). I still have to master the Pose method, and running still gets my calves to ache (note to self: don't focus on the landing, focus on the pulling off the ground).

Do read the other reviews here. By and large, they have positive things to say about the Pose method, and this review has been overly verbose as it is (must be contagious). And yet, with this one PRO, it makes up for all the CONs, and this book gets the five stars it deserves.

Do note, my criticisms are not against the POSE method, but on the book (price, length, pics). Too bad there aren't any Pose clinics/seminars yet in my country!

So, here ends the review, and hope you found it useful. Despite the price, I urge everyone to get the book.

Running can be fun and fluid.......2006-11-10

I am a 40-something lifetime sports enthusiast, with an arthritic knee. I am very health conscious and work out several days per week. I limit my running to dirt paths, and do not compete. I have stayed abreast of new developments in performance training by various leading authors. I have participated in sports my whole life, both organized and recreational. I realized that despite all this participation in sports for decades, I had never received any formal instruction on running technique. I had also found that if I asked ten people about running form and footstrike, I'd get ten opinions, all a bit different. So I searched the web and landed on this book. The book teaches excellent form, and has exceptional agility and flexibilty drills. The drills really help with mastering the sensations of running with balance on the forefoot. My running has become more fluid, less painful, much faster and much more fun. Imagine running without pain ... and I have a tender knee! Anyone looking for a fast path to more enjoyable running should read this book.

This book tries to convince you that by running a certain way, you're going to improve your running experience and (ultimately) your speed.

Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing new in this book. Any experienced runner in good shape knows what the author is talking about, but sorry Dr. Romanov, you didn't invent anything here.

I got a couple of comments to my post, and they made their fair point. My perspective is that any book that can make you 'go out and run' gets my vote. But that's where I have a problem with this one. The contents could hold in 30 pages. It's overly wordy. And again, I would argue that it really doesn't bring anything new to the table.

I'm a firm believer in the general guidelines put forth by Dr. Romanov. I learned them running track over many years and doing hundreds of drills running sprints on grass - preferably barefoot. I fully agree with the physics that he explains. But my perspective is 'go out there and do it!'. This book tells you to study this technique over and over again and then 'try'. That's not the right way to learn. Trust me. If you've been running track up to middle distances, you'll know what I mean, because you can't really run any other way.

If anything, I will strongly caution inexperienced runners - particularly those who are even slightly overweight: 'forcing' a forefoot motion WILL LEAD TO INJURY. Before you know it, you will develop plantar fasciitis, which is not life threatening, but quite painful. Start with fast walks, eat healthy, and jog your way to better shape. If you want to 'graduate' to a more dynamic running style, find a local track club, get coached, or run around your local football field barefoot. Do some speed drills. And EUREKA - you will indeed understand what Dr. Romanov is talking about. Its the chicken before the egg thing. Go out there and run, don't hang around on your couch reading about it. Just my two cents.

I have not seen the book but wanted to comment on the editorial comments.
Prince Michael's Grandmother was Queen Olga of Greece, born a Grand Duchess of Russia but she was not a sister of Nicholas II. Olga's father and Nicholas II's grandfather were brothers. Thus Olga was a cousin to Nicholas II's father, Alexander III and therefore Olga and Nicholas II were second cousins. Prince Michael is a Prince of Greece and Denmark as his grandfather, King George I of Greece (Olga's husband) was born in Denmark as the second son of King Christian IX of Denmark and was elected King of Greece in March of 1863, thus becoming the King of Greece as a 17 year old prior to his father becoming King of Denmark in November of the same year, 1863. The Great Powers of Europe were looking for a new King for Greece when Vilhelm (his Danish name) was noticed at the March 1863 wedding of his older sister, Alexandra, when she married the Prince of Wales, son of Queen Victoria, and later King Edward VII. King George also had a sister (born Dagmar in Denmark) who married Alexander III of Russia, and were the parents of Nicholas II. This Michael's father Christopher was a first cousin to King George as well, making Michael a second cousin to Tsar Nicholas II through his father. Obviously one needs a "score card" to keep track of European Royalty as most of them are related to each other one way or another as in the past royalty was only allowed to marry royalty. Fortunately that has changed over the last several generations and it would appear that ALL of the heirs to the crowns of Europe have indeed married for love, and almost all of them have married commoners.

This book wasn't very expensive but it wasn't that good either. If you collect jewelry books like me you will already have all the pictures. If you are buying other books at this price it may be worth an add on but dont expect to much. The photos are of medium quality and the text is poor.

Lovely Book, not enough!.......2007-07-16

The Romanov ladies, dressed for a court function, dripped precious gemstones from top to toe, each Grand Duchess trying to outdo another in grandeur. Most of that jewelry has been lost, sold, the stones removed. Those who escaped the Revolution were lucky if they managed to take a small collection of their jewels with the, and most had to sell what they brought into exile to support themselves -- after they had written and sold their memoirs, that is. The memoirs of those who saw the Russian court in all its splendour, however, make it clear that the jewelry shown in this book doesn't begin to give one an idea of what the jewelry of the Romanov court ladies was like, though it tries admirably. I, too, would love to see a book on all the jewels of the Romanov ladies -- it might be impossible to find the information now, but the Soviet government apparently does still have some of the pieces left behind.

What is "different" about this book........2007-07-13

The pictures are, of course, beautiful, and show fabulous jewelry. However, what I enjoyed the most was the background information that the author was able to give. Since he is related to most of the royal families of europe, he has unusual access to jewelry, paintings, historical records and inside information. For anyone interested in the time of Imperial Russia, this book does not disappoint. At least one of my friends has also bought this book on my recommendation. I would also suggest this author's book "The Crown Jewels of Europe. If you can find it.

Wow great visual of the jewelry of the romanov's.......2007-05-08

I was really blown away by the pictures of the Jewels, especially the cherry earrings for the new Brides, I had read about these earrings but it is nothing to actually seeing how large the stones really are. Good historical pictures with various pieces. A wonderful index for the historian trying to get a handle on the lifestyle of the upper classes and the royalty of russia before the revolution.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This is a book you expected Massie to write.....since Nicholas & Alexandra was written in (I think) 1969, an update since 1991 was critical. It gives you an idea what was being discovered in DNA research and proving the bones found were who they were. Its a book a Romanov observer should have, or at least read to glean the information from. Worth it, for sure.

Much-Awaited Finale to 'Nicholas and Alexandra'.......2006-08-20

Massie is a master historian and storyteller, and this book is nearly impossible to put down. Though reading Massie's prequel, 'Nicholas and Alexandra', is not essential to understandng 'The Romanovs: The Final Chapter', it is highy recommended. Beginning with the murder of the Romanov family, then moving to the discovery and exhumation of their remains, forensic and DNA analysis and the ensuing religious and political debate over their disposition and burial, Massie weaves an accurate historical narrative that reads like the finest detective thriller. Throughout, he carefully explains-in laymen's terminology-basic aspects of genetics, DNA analysis and forensic medicine. The true identity of 'Anastasia' claimant Anna Anderson is finally revealed in this book through a careful analysis of her life and the historical and genetic evidence. A wonderful read, and extremely informative-highly recommended!

A MUST! A WONDERFUL BOOK!.......2006-06-06

This is the so-called "sequel" to Robert Massie's masterpiece "Nicholas and Alexandra." It is an excellent book about the imprisonment and murder of Russia's last Tsar and his family. If you want to learn about this important event in Russian History, please do not waste your time with Greg King and Penny Wilson's "The Fate of the Romanovs." This book, "The Romanovs: The Final Chapter" by Robert Massie is the book you should read. It also dives into the myth of Anna Anderson and proves she was a fraud.

Very good for the year it was made.......2006-01-06

Robert Massie was the author who best recorded all the discoveries of the Romanovs in 1990's, when at long last the secrets were revealed. However, one fact remains, two bodies are still missing, the bodies of Anastasia and Alexei, and they weren't burned to ashes. "The Fate of the Romanovs" by Greg King and Penny Wilson demonstrates just why and also is the most updated book. Get that one as an update to this one.

Massie....please, FIND a new dead horse to beat!.......2005-06-02

Robert Massie has spent execptional amounts of time for over 30 years flaying this dead horse about the Romanvos. He has all ways been dead wrong with any of his "findings".

As any /every one knows, history is a fairy tale, slanted by the winning side. Russians are incapable of telling the truth. The British are not known as exceptionally truthful. There are legions of individuals both directly involved and peripherally involved with the "fate" of the Romanovs, but none will band together and state the facts. TOO, too ridiculous, with Massie acting like Moses coming down from the Mount. Hey, Bob, after all, it is ONLY your version of the facts.

His "research" is sloppy, he relies on dubious sources. He violates all the basic tenets of factual, honest journalism.

By all means, AVOID any and all books with Massie's name on them. Total waste of time, effort, ink, paper and money. He should have quit with "Nicholas & Alexandra", so long ago!

The most interesting Romanov book I've read yet.......2007-07-03

This is the first book from the eurohistory publishing company that I've purchased, and I have to say I was impressed. The Gilded Prism chronicles the lives of Konstantin Nikolaievich and his descendants through the last century of Romanov rule. The book starts with Konstantin Nikolaievich the family's patriarch who was the brother of Alexander II. He played a huge part in the reforms of his brother's reign and was a talented musician although his later years were frought with tragedy. Next is his wife Alexandra Iosifovna who came from Germany a young and somewhat frivolous princess to become a highly respected and imperious Grand Duchess although very conceited and self absorbed. The book then follows the lives of their children. The oldest, Nicholas, brought scandal and embarrassment to the family while the two daughters Olga and Vera became popular and beloved women in their adopted homelands. Konstantin Konstantinovich proved one of the most dutiful and charitable members of the Romanovs, but also led a secret homosexual life. Dimitri was just as dutiful as his brother and was a talened military commander and horse breeder. The youngest, Vyacheslav, who is often times forgotten because he died young, was said to be intelligent and doted on by his father. The book also chronicles the descendants of Nicholas and Konstantin Konstantinovich who led equally interesting lives themselves. I give the book five stars because it gives much detail and information on this branch of the Roamnov family. The Konstantinovichi were an artistically talented, highly intelligent, dutiful, and charitable family at a time when most Romanovs were known for being callously decadent and lacking in intelligence as well as concern for the common people. It is refreshing to read a novel that isn't completely devoted to the overdone subject of Nicholas II and Alexandra. The one sore point I found with this book is that there isn't as much info on Olga and Vera like there was on their brothers, but the title does say The Konstantinovichi Grand Dukes & the Last Years of the Romanov Dyansty and not the Grand Duchesses so I guess it's to be expected. The most interesting part of the book was the story of how Nicholas and his American mistress Fanny Lear (just one of her names I might add), got embroiled in a scandal that led to his exile and being nearly forgotten by the rest of the family. The book also analyzes the nature of Konstantin Konstantinovich's homosexuality. It also contains three sections of photos, many I've never seen before, several family trees, and even features some of Konstantin Konstantinovich's poems, which are full of emotional and artistic depth. The book is relatively short but the wealth of information and photos proves the age old saying it's quality over quantity. I was thoroughly impressed and will definitely purchase more books from eurohistory in the future.

You might argue that there's no point to this English-language edition of a Russian book, because only the most feverish Russian monarchist could take seriously, as a political issue, the question of whether the last Tsar's heir survived the Bolshevik massacre at Ekaterinburg. But this is a bit like saying that it doesn't matter how Amelia Earhart died: a mystery is a mystery, each with its own special claims on our attention. We know that Cheka thugs buried two fewer bodies than they fired at, and forensic evidence shows that if those two got away, they were almost certainly Nicholas's two youngest children, Anastasia and Alexei. There have been many Alexei pretenders in Russia, but none with so well-documented a claim as the one presented (a little breathlessly) here, on behalf of the schoolteacher Vasily Filatov, who died in 1984. Computerized facial matching says that he must be Alexei, and there is an enormous amount of other circumstantial evidence. Intriguing ... as, in a rubber-necking sort of way, is the forensically detailed reconstruction of what happened on the murderous night of July 16 to 17, 1918. But note that the relevant genetic information about Filatov has not been disclosed. Many experts, using just the methods emphasized here, were convinced beyond doubt that Anna Anderson must have been Alexei's sister Anastasia ... until DNA samples showed up. So caveat lector. What really drives this book is the series of grainy, haunting images of Filatov: was he just a peasant turned teacher, or did those deep, inscrutable eyes, which do look so very, very like the eyes of the young tsarevitch, hide for six decades a terrible story about crawling away from a pile of corpses? --Richard Farr

The Russian Romanov dynasty came to an abrupt end on the night of July 17, 1918, when the imperial family was executed by the Bolsheviks. Or did it? He married, had children, and told his family the story of the Tsarevich's escape in the third person, as historical narrative. he never explained how, as a village teacher living under the oppressive silence and censorship of the Soviet Union, he was fluent in several foreign languages, had an in-depth knowledge of the private life of the Romanov family, and an uncanny grasp of the details surrounding the 1918 execution. With the advent of perestroika in the 1980's, the Soviet archives were finally opened to the public and, to his family's amazement, many of the incredible stories that Vasily Filatov had told his with and children were revealed to the world as historical fact.

In this startling volume, three well-respected scientists provide a convincing, thoroughly documented account of how such an extraordinary escape was possible, and how the executioners managed to cover up the fact that the body of the heir to the throne was missing. Drawing on official records and documents from Russian archive, the grisly personal accounts of soldiers who took part in the execution, and utilizing the latest scientific and forensic technology, the authors offer evidence that Alexei Romanov and Vasily Filatov were on and the same.

Filatov died in 1988. But his widow and children provide intimate reminiscences that bring this astonishing tale to life. Nice, but not a match.......2006-03-06

It all boils down to this: there is no way that the little boy and the man in the front cover (or in any of the other pictures) are the same person. Alexei's eyebrows tend to be very square, yet Vasily's are drooping down. Age may change appearance, but there is the "essence of the person" and these two don't match. The rest of the story is interesting, especially the history, but the argument is not airtight or even water-tight. There are other explanations. As for the writing, the book tends to drag on at times, but overall it is entertaining reading.

entertaining read but very implausible.......2004-11-06

Although this book does an admirable job of piecing together a convincing argument that Tsarevich Alexei survived from circumstantial evidence, it will not convince anyone who knows anything about Russian history. Facial structure alone is no match for DNA analysis and simple facts. For my part, I didn't think that the picture of Filitov matched the picture of Alexei at all. Disregarding that, however, this book's conclusion is highly improbable. Multiple Romanov executioners have stated that one of them kicked the tsarevich in the head, and then Chekist Yakov Yurovsky shot Alexei three times point blank in the ear. Perhaps the authors do not believe this, but there is no chance anyone, let alone a hemophiliac, could survive that. The authors contend that Alexei was only seriously wounded, not dead, when he and his family were put into the truck and driven off to be buried, and that Alexei then fell out of the truck and escaped. Even if this is true, he would have bled to death in hours. Medical treatments were simply not available at that time to treat even minor bleeding. So while these authors provide the most believable explanation regarding the possible survival of Romanov family members, it is not believable enough to make this book worth buying.

Not convinced.......2004-06-18

I am a sucker for all things Romanov, and haven't read anything about the Russian Royal Family in a year or two. So I was anxious to start The Escape of Alexei by Vadim Petrov, Igor Lysenko and Georgy Egorov. Those looking to this book for a Romanov-fix won't find it here.

The premise that someone could have survived the Romanov massacre in Ekaterinburg in July 1918 is a tempting one. It gained even more momentum when two bodies turned up missing when the remains of the Royal Family were found in 1978. The group chosen to kill the Romanovs was a disorganized bunch, and the scene of the murder was complete chaos. But the theory that Vasily Filatov was actually the tsarevich Alexei is a laughable one.

First and foremost, there has been no DNA testing, and the authors give us lame excuses why this has not been done. We've already been duped by Anna Anderson, who was proven by DNA to be an impostor after her death. Second, the fact that a hemophiliac could live to the ripe old age of 83 stretches the imagination-especially without medical intervention. The book does have good photos, but the young Alexei looks nothing like Filatov. There are many statements made by Filatov's family, but just because Filatov loved the celebrate New Years' and birthdays, read poetry, or played classical music doesn't prove he was Alexei. Filatov also didn't seem to pass on much concrete information about growing up as the tsarevich. There are just too many gaps in the story, and too much lacking here.

The book itself is tedious at times-especially the background information at the beginning. The body of the book is only 176 pages, and much of it is repetition. And the 26 page appendix is filled with worthless information.

So, for true Romanov aficionados, I suggest you pass on The Escape of Alexei and pick up something a little more worthwhile.

I don't suggest this book at all. It was not very persuasive and in one of the pictures, one Grand Duchess is misidentified! You'd think their "brother" would know who is was! It seems completely made up.

Time Well Spent...Doing Something Else.......2002-06-11

This book is absolute rubbish! Don't even waste your money on it. You'd do better reading The Cat in the Hat rather than this. For any Romanov fan, this book is a must-a must throw in the trash. I don't know why people still insist that Aleksey survived Ekaterinburg. Just drop it. He didn't survive. Anastasiya didn't survive. Maria didn't survive. None of them survived! They most likely just burned the two "missing" bodies and scattered the ashes around the site...

complete waste of time if you have the POSE book.......2007-05-13

Pretty much a complete waste of time if you have, or are intending to get, Dr Nicholas Romanov's main POSE book. I purchased this thinking it was a supplement to that book, but in fact its just sections of a couple of chapters from the main book sold separately. I wish it had been advertised as such.
