Book Description
Lately second-grader Freddy Dissel has that left-out kind of feeling. Life can be lonely when you're the middle kid in the family and you feel like "the peanut butter part of a sandwich," squeezed between an older brother and a little sister. But now for the first time it's Freddy's chance to show everyone how special he is and, most of a all, prove it to himself!

Not Bad!!!.......2002-04-12
I think this book as ok it was all about this boy being in the middle and he hates it so he trys to fit in a play can you belive this. But it was not that bad.(funny too)
Touching title...Loving story.......2002-01-14
There are books to thrill you, and there are the books that warm you throughout your life. This is one of them.
Judy Blume has a broad stroke, writing for ages from elementary to Adult life. And with each book, she captures all the humiliation and comedy that those years offer. Though I was "too big" for this book when I read it, I don't regret doing so. Though I am not a middle child, I understand how it feels when, as a child, you feel that you don't matter, at that stage "not-old-enough-and-so-not-important-enough". Having read a wide scale of Blume throughout childhood, I know which books touched me, made me angry, and made me shout: "Hoooray!"
Judy Blume puts as much feeling into her books' titles as she does into her stories, and so even the most disaffected can only become interested because of her colorful titles. This is one of my favorite Judy Blume stories, and my favorite title by her. There are stories to challenge, books to think, fables that make you laugh out loud and novels to make you weep.
And there is "The One in the Middle is the Green Kangeroo". Even if you have not heard of Judy Blume or haven't read one of her titles, I won't hold it against you. It is a short life and we can't read them all, but doesn't the title sound curious enough for you to give this book a try?
JUDY BLUME DOES IT AGAIN.......2001-11-01
This is a GREAT book for the family. Our children loved this book. It is easy for them to read and undestand. It is full of laughter and fun.
I read Judy Blume as a child and am SOOO HAPPY that my children also get to experience her work.
Reviews from sever-year-olds.......2000-05-19
The following reviews were written by four 7-year-olds in a classroom book club I led. We studied reviews from Amazon.com before they wrote theirs to see how there can be many different opinions on one title:
Annie says: I would recommend this book to you because it is neat how Freddy Dissel started out having nothing special and ended up doing something all of his own. He gets to be the green kangaroo in a school play.
Ashleigh says: I think this book is funny because my 4-year-old brother is the middle child and me and my sister boss him around like Freddy. I think everyone should have this book!
David says: This book is about a boy named Freddy who plays the green kangaroo in the school play. I think it is stupid because he hops all around saying, "I'm the Green Kangaroo." I would not recommend a friend read this book because it is stupid.
Rachel says: I think this book is funny because when Freddy's teacher, Ms. Gumber, told him "break a leg" he thought he should really fall off the stage and break a leg. I would recommend this book to you because it is neat and I think it is neat because the illustrator really expressed what the words described.
The green kangroo is a good book........1999-05-22
I really enjoyed The one in the middle is the green kangroo. It had comedy, fussing, and problems. The main chacters is Freddy Dissel and his brother Michel and his sister Ellen. Freddy didn't like being small beacuse he did not like being out of the fun. One day at school there was a poster in the hall that said MEETING FOR SCHOOL PLAY Fifth AND SIX GRADERS ONLY. He went to class and told his teacher he wont's to be in the play but his teacher told him that it was only for the big kids. But she told him that she would ask Ms. Matson about a special part for him. If you want to hear the ending of the story read the book.

Customer Reviews:
one of my childhood favorites.......2007-04-12
I may be 25 years old, but this book still stands out as being one of my top favorites as a toddler. I used to read this book probably every day and wish I had my own little lamb to play with! When I have children, I will definitely be reading this book to them.
Girl raises lamb for the summer.......2005-03-26
This book is in line with others in the series, featuring attractive photos of a young child and a cute animal; in this case the story revolves around Emmy and her lamb, Timothy.
The gentle story has Emmy raising the lamb from infancy over the course of a summer. The lamb has some garden-variety misadventures around the home, such as knocking over a bucket of apples. When the lamb accidentally upends the picnic table at a children's birthday party, Emmy's father says that the time has come for him to rejoin his flock at the Wetherbee farm.
This is an odd book in that it features a child giving up a beloved pet, but chooses not to dramatize that action. Emmy sheds no tears, and seems to feel no qualms about returning Timothy to the Wetherbee Farm. This may or may not be a good story for children who are placed into this unfortunate situation to hear.
Given that this seems to be a wash as far as teaching children a valuable lesson, I think that the book needs to be more entertaining than it is. The pictures are, in some cases, beautiful, but I'm not sure that this will hold the attention of toddlers.
great children's book.......2001-03-15
I owned this book as a child and 20 years later I am still fond of it. A sweet story about a young's girls love of caring for a new lamb. LArge color photographs throughout book. A nice addition for any child's library.
This is a wonderful book for children and the young at heart.......1999-03-31
I remeber this book from my childhood and it has stuck with me for many years. Because of this I am ordering myself a copy of it now. The photographs are adorable and the story is charming. I recomend this book to all.
Nice Book.......1998-10-29
This book is so nice that my sister who read it fainted when she was reading it. When se woke up she wanted little lambs. This book is also exciting and she cannot stop reading it

Customer Reviews:
Great for a "chosen" adopted or foster child.......2007-04-22
This was a favorite in my home with my young (bio) daughter. When my husband and I became foster parents I read it to my foster daughter and used it to reinforce the idea that we "chose" her.
She loved to hear the process that we went through to be able to have her live with us. She understood that we would choose her "everytime"!
Blessing your child!!!.......2003-02-05
This is a wonderful little book for children and adults alike, and it focuses on giving the blessing to children, much as Trent has written in other books, but this one is focused on the children, and what impact that can have on them.
The story follows Norbert and the fact that no one wanted to sit with him on the way to school. And his way to school is exciting - they all go on a rollercoaster. Now that's what I call creativity. Judy Love has done some marvelous illustrations, and you just want to jump on this rollercoaster with all the others.
A great tool in the hands of parents and caregivers to give the blessing to children.
Wonderful!!!!!.......1999-05-11
I volunteered to read at an elementary school at a Read in and the class consisted of 2nd,3rd, and 4th graders- The teacher loved the story and the kids absolutely enjoyed it. I'm ordering 2 copies-1 for my 7 yr. old and the other copy I'm going to donate to the class.
It is our childýs favorite book........1999-01-19
"I'd Choose You" is a great book to help a child gain self-expectance. It has colorful illustration of animals that are used to help a child understand the five elements of the blessing: spoken words, meaningful touch, attaching high value to someone, picturing a wonderful future and genuine commitment

An intimate, respectfully honest look at Judy's life.......2003-10-19
Basil Nestor describes this book as "an unabashed celebration of the wonder of Judy Garland," and indeed that is exactly what Judy: A Life in Pictures is: a celebration of a remarkable woman and unsurpassed entertainer. The biography of Judy is told most tellingly in pictures ranging from a shot of two-year-old Francis Ethel "Baby" Gumm to a wearied, prematurely old Garland hovering on the brink of her premature death. The pictures, all 125+ included here in this over-sized book, offer a great deal of personal insight into the life of this lady who was larger than the life she suffered through. Some would scoff at the likelihood of a superstar such as Judy Garland being constantly unhappy, but anyone who knows the gist of her life's story knows that troubles forever haunted her. The movie studios treated her badly and got her started on drugs because they thought she was fat, she saw only ugliness in the mirror whereas many fans adored her for who she was; I myself see the young Judy Garland as a striking beauty that put the likes of Lana Turner to shame. These pictures clearly show the toll taken upon Judy by her continuing drug problems, unhappy if not disastrous relationships, constant self-doubt, economic straits, and overall depression, yet they also capture moments of true magic when the real Judy Garland floated to the surface and made everyone around her love her. The later pictures of Judy are sometimes heartbreaking to see, particularly those of her final year as she basically wasted away, but these pictures show Judy as she really was.
The pictures are accompanied by a short biography of Judy's life and career, and this makes for an excellent introduction to this most complicated and talented of performers. Her entertainment exploits are documented lovingly, and her failures and tragedies described with great respect. You will find none of the hurtful innuendoes other authors spitefully insert in their own economically-motivated hatchet jobs of Judy, yet Nestor does not portray her as an innocent angel by any means, acknowledging the fact that many of her troubles in life were a result of her own actions. Thus, what you get here is a short, respectfully honest peek into the life of the greatest female entertainer the world has ever known, with a sizable number of intimate pictures telling the story more keenly than the words accompanying them. This is a book sure to delight any fan of Judy Garland.
Charming additon to any collection.......2000-05-08
This book is very well put together, combining some excellent pictures and interesting and ACCURATE text. You'll see Judy at two years old in a white ruffled dress all ready to sing onstage, the original "Dorothy Gale" look, some lovely photos leading you through Judy's flourishing years at MGM, her life as a wife and mother, ready to embark on the concert circuit, and finally, the last years of this beloved legend. The pictures are beautifully subtle and never too revealing, always candid and mostly nostalgic. The text is never incriminating or bitter against its subject. It is, and I quote it, "an unabashed celebration of the wonder of Judy Garland", and is a charming addition to any Garland collection.
A WONDERFUL BOOK!!.......1999-04-04
This book was beautiful. I was awed with the wonderful collection of famous and not-so-famous photos. If you're a fan of Judy this book is for you.

Two sisters, who happen to be spiders, learn to appreciate their differences. Great for sisters of all ages!
Customer Reviews:
"Spider Sisters".......2003-11-24
I gave this book to my sister for her college graduation last year because she is so special to me, and this book puts those feelings into words. It's written about a set of twin sisters, but any sisters can appreciate it...it's about the sweetest book I've ever read! The illustrations are photographs of the clay characters and they are precious! A WONDERFUL book that is difficult to find but worth the search!
spider sisters isn't just for kids.......2002-02-25
The illustrations in Spider Sisters are so wonderful and creative (clay and real objects). John Trent uses spiders to describe the wonderful love and friendship that sisters share ('fuzzy armed hug', many arms to share toys with). There's such love and care in every word; i am buying one for each of my two sisters (and one for me--since i am using a borrowed copy). Get one!
This book is simply a must have treasure for little girls!!.......1999-10-22
My girls love this book as much as I do. It teaches them how to love each other and be there for each other....always. My girls have memorized many of the lines and refer to themselves as Spider Sisters a lot. Sweet as pie...it brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. We give it to other little girls with sisters all the time as a gift.
Sister sentiments shared simplistically!.......1998-06-17
This is a charming narrative told by a young spider concerning the good, the bad and the ugly of growing up with a sister. Differences between the sisters are pointed out; however, the similarities which bond are also delightfully revealed. My young daughters, ages 5 and 3, as well as myself, thoroughly enjoyed this story amidst the detailed and colorful illustrations. Even in their early development, my girls came to recognize within the story that they have differences just as the spider sisters did, but that they too "will always have each other."
Book Description
The music of bongos, cowbells, maracas, and even pots and pans fills the air. In this introduction to music, a spunky girl finds the perfect percussion instrument to play along with each member of her musical family.
Customer Reviews:
Play magic fingers, play!.......2004-04-11
I have a horrible nasty habit that I've been fighting against for years and years. When I see that a book, whether for adult or child, has won an award of any sort, I immediately become the Queen of the Critique. Suddenly, no matter how wonderful or well written the book is, I'm continually underwhelmed. I read through the tale and think to myself, "Well, it was good. It just wasn't THAT good". Now that is my usual reaction. Thankfully, it is not my only reaction. And after reading "My Family Plays Music", I am proud to say that it wasn't my reaction in the least. My response to this fine creation was something far more along the lines of, "It WAS that good! Well, I'll be darned".
Following a spunky girl sporting cornrows and a purple bow smack dab in the middle of her head, we observe her pointed observations about each member of her family. The child of a uniquely musical fam, each person related to her excels in a different genre. Her mother plays in a country western band, as her father lends his talents to a string quartet. Some people in this family play rock and roll. Others pipe out cool jazz in clubs like "The Blue Note". There's swing music, and bongos in poetry cafes. The girl even has relatives involved in everything from church organs to (and my credulousness was stretched a bit on this one) polka bands. Mmm. Nonetheless, everyone has their part to play. As each person is described, the young girl plays some type of a percussion instrument to accompany them. I liked this fact, if only because it gives percussionists the respect they are due. This girl is every bit as much a musician as her family members, whether she's beating out a tune on a soup kettle, cowbell, and woodblock or shaking her tambourine and maracas. This swell story focuses on diversity without making its point and shaking it in your face.
A helpful glossary is included in the back of the book that explains each term that might be considered difficult for kids to understand. These are accompanied by small pictures that define the terms clearly and concisely. Anyone wishing to explain the difference between woodwind and brass instruments will be able to do so with this resource. In terms of the book's construction itself, Judy Cox has written a great story. Elbrite Brown's illustrations act as a perfect match, making it difficult to believe that this is the illustrator's first picture book. I've rarely seen cut paper pictures that get the small details down so well. Whether he's creating a tiny finger lifted from a fiddle or the delicate black lines that make up a man's goatee, Brown is adept at his work and we are the ones who benefit. All in all, a great book that is entirely deserving of the 2004 Coretta Scott King Award that it has received.

American folk singer Judy Collins's work as a lyricist is not well known, but it's as affecting as her performances of "Suzanne" and "Chelsea Morning" (for which first daughter Chelsea Clinton is said to be named). "My Father" has a special place in the hearts of those who've been lucky enough to share dreams with their own dads. A simple remembrance of an Ohio miner and his promise to take his girls to Paris, the song is now a book, and its lyrics (and score) are available to a new generation. The lyrics are accompanied here by Jane Dyer's evocative illustrations, to which children will respond immediately. Adults may even find themselves longing for their childhood days. (The publisher suggests the book for children ages 4-8, but anybody who ever loved a dad, and any dad who ever loved his children, will be moved and pleased by this book.)
