4 out of 5 stars A fun way to test your sense of style.......2007-10-18

Not getting the response you hope for from that poster in the window? Maybe you need to check your design... This book is key for anyone who was not born with the style gene, like me! The "What Not To Wear" for publication design. It is essential for anyone dealing with public relations and advertisement - even if it is a resume or business card. Excellent resource for beginning Web developers or anyone involved with graphic layout. Highly recommended for audiences middle school and up.

4 out of 5 stars Design demystified.......2007-09-16

Writers who want to improve the look of whatever they write will find some excellent information here. This book will also suit anyone who wants to understand the basics of graphic design. Williams' engaging writing style makes this both an entertaining and useful read. Make sure you do the exercises and quizzes - they're fun and extremely helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the time to read!.......2007-07-17

This book is a quick and nice read. It really helps me have a better concept of the main ideas of graphic design. It is definitely a good investment to take the time to read it. Whether you are a beginning web-designer, or are involved in other types of graphic design, this book will certainly save you a lot of headaches in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Opens a new world .......2007-07-16

I love this book! I've spent quite some time working on a new business card for myself using Williams' clear and basic instructions, and the process has been exciting and fun. I now have a business card that says much more about me and is light-years away from the standard format available at the do-it-yourself places.

If you can tell that your brochure/card/letterhead/flyer/poster looks terrible but have no idea why, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative........2007-06-25

My professor actually made us buy this book for our Intro. to Desktop Publishing course. I really like it. It has great design info for graphic designers and non-designers alike and has some humour thrown in there as well. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars good for interns.......2005-12-27

This was my reference of choice when I was an intern at a busy major children's hospital. It's comprehensive, not too heavy to lug around, gives you the important details and gives you references as to where to go next for further reading. It's not always enough information when it comes to specific cases. I usually went to UpToDate, PedsinReview or lit searches at that point. I think this is a solid book to have early in your career because it lets you cover the most relevant material in a readable manner. As a second year, I don't go back to Currents as much and mostly go with articles.

4 out of 5 stars great for medical students, less so for those beyond........2005-05-12

this is a well-written, decent source of information that I feel is geared more for medical students than residents. Its purpose is to familiarize the reader with common and well-known conditions and basic treatment definitions, along with basic epidemiology. It is not a one-stop reference for diseases, however, in that it will not go into detail regarding treatment including dosages and often time course of treatment; discussion of pathophysiology is quite limited. it certainly is unnecessary for a medical student to know whether to treat with high-dose vs. regular dose antibiotics, or whether single vs. double coverage for a given infection is more appropriate. but it would be much more helpful to your resident or attending to have such information in a reference book.

this book is an easy read; however, if you are in residency or beyond, i'd humbly suggest skipping this book and going for something along the lines of a Nelson's Textbook of Peidatrics. but if you're looking for a basic definition of diseases, then this book is certainly sufficient.

My Current Pediatric Dx and Tx gets used every day in class. If you are required another book for classes, add this book as a supplament.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERIOR METHODOLOGY; VERY COMPREHENSIVE.......2003-01-28

Designed by experts, and with care; "Current Pediatric Diagnosis & Treatment" is one book that both paediatricians and GPs know too well. It covered every aspect of child's health-care in a way that would arouse envy in other texts. Its superior methodology is one factor that has kept its name above others. The authors of this book deserve tons of commendations. They did a fantastic job. Every chapter of the book speaks for them!
Its illustrations are utterly comprehensive; and the frequency with which its information is updated ensure that only the most current advances in paediatrics are included.
Very welcomed! Books of this quality would ensure that doctors (and medics) will always live upto their respective billings.

5 out of 5 stars Children won't seem a problem with this book.......2001-12-29

Everyone recommended big fat books of pediatrics, with lots of words and little answers. But this book is all you want and need to know about in your pediatrics rotations. With diagnostic essentials, getting through diseases just gets a lot easier, and with therapeutical answers, it just builds good doctors. I specially liked the chapter on antimicrobials and vaccines, so essential in pediatric care. Definitely a must have for a good medical student with lot to learn and too little time (at the end, that's what medicine is all about). All my medschool classmates just wanted to have my book.

While the second edition of The Non-Designer's Web Book won't answer all of your technical questions about the inner workings of the Web, it explains most of what a beginning designer needs to know: what the Web is, how it gets to your computer, how to use it, and, most of all, how to design for it.

Any artist can tell you that you have to know how a medium works to get the most impact from working in it. A basic understanding of how the Web works enables the good designer to create the most effective sites. This book thoroughly discusses the different kinds of graphics that are used on the Web, when to use one over another, how to make the most of text styles, and how to design navigation systems.

The comparisons are the best stuff here--good design vs. bad design, why designing Web pages is different from designing printed pages, and why a site looks terrific on one monitor but terrible on another. Two chapters on properly preparing graphics and setting typography for use on a Web site describe how to avoid obvious mistakes that would make your work look amateurish.

Not limited to design, The Non-Designer's Web Book shows how to get a site up and running, register the domain name, and add it to search engines. After the design is finished and implemented, the site has to be uploaded and updated; this is explained, too.

If there is one fault with this book, it's the lack of information on specific authoring tools. The barest overview of the current crop of tools appears in chapter 3, "Just What Are Web Pages, Anyway?", but a discussion of why you should choose one package over another is absent.

Don't let that fault stop you from buying this book, however. Plenty of magazines regularly have Web authoring tool "shootouts." What the magazines don't do, and what The Non-Designer's Web Book excels at, is tell you how to make well-designed pages. If you're going to build Web sites, for either personal or professional use, but you have no clue where to begin, start with this book. It's easy to read, devoid of confusing jargon, and full of dos and don'ts to help you avoid common snags. --Mike Caputo

To that end, you'll find loads of real-world examples, interesting illustrations, and the simple instructions you need to implement the techniques and concepts described in these pages.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-09-27

I have only read about 6 chapters but there is so much basic information available about what is important when designing a web page. I am using this for a college course and this is preparing me to design a hypermedia project.

3 out of 5 stars An OK book .......2007-09-23

This book is OK for someone who might be trying to teach another the principals of webpage design. I had to buy it for a graduate level textbook and didn't see much use for it. It might be better used in the K-12 area, not college level.

4 out of 5 stars Web book.......2007-02-06

I was required to buy this book for a grad course. It is to the point and easy to understand.

1 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2006-11-16

This book is seriously out of date for modern web design and development.

5 out of 5 stars Very, very useful.......2006-11-11

I bought this book for a college class I was taking but found that it was far more useful than just fulfilling a class requirement. This book details what is needed in creating a website from beginning to end, including how to be found on search engines and how to make your web site not look amateurish. The authors include plenty of pictures and graphics to illustrate their points, and do not write in "techo-garble" which keeps the average layman at arm's length. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE considering making their own website.

If you just stumbled into design, maybe via a hobby that grew into a career, and you want to improve your work without having to enroll in a degree program, this book can bridge some of the gaps in your acumen. Not really a primer on basic facts, Design Workshop is more like a guide to style.

The first chapter quizzes readers on mostly technical, basic details of design (like dpi), all of which can be found in Williams's previous publications (for example, The Non-Designer's Design Book). Readers will be dismayed, possibly annoyed, that the quiz answers are not provided. Even if not knowing the answers means that you need remedial help, it feels like a bit of a tease.

The next chapters show how to use stock images, or your own images, to increase the visual impact of your piece (basically through an increase in contrast). The best part of this section, and the book as a whole, is the "before-and-after" approach in the examples; they're like a series of makeovers. The captions effectively describe what was changed in the image, and how it improved the design.

The book applies a similar set of makeovers to various types of design projects: logos, forms, newsletters, tables of contents, etc. In the final section, seven designers, including coauthor Tollett, break down the process that they went through on a job of their own.

Self-taught graphic designers probably would make the best audience for this book, but designers who are of their own "school of thought" might find fault with some of the tenets that are put forth. Graphic design by nature is a subjective enterprise--at the mercy of "styles." What you get in this book is more of a "desktop-publisher style" (many of the drawings are clip art, for example). There's a lack of sophistication in the design of the book, as well as in the illustrations of posters, letterheads, advertisements, and other applications that are used as examples. On the other hand, this same open, naive look gives the book an inviting appeal, and makes it perhaps a bit less daunting than style guides, such as Robert Bringhurst's The Elements of Typographic Style, that are intended for die-hard professionals. --Angelynn Grant

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-11-10

I've always admired Robin Williams' design books. They're straight forward, practical, and well layed out, of course. What's important about Robin's books is that she consistently ties together several design principals and builds and connects to those principles in each of her books. She provides numerous examples and resources for you to build upon and she makes you feel that you can achieve the goals of good design. Her books are not written from an elitist or esoteric point of view. They're written for both design students and laymen who are interested in the principles of good and effective design.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2006-11-10

I found this book to be very helpful and easy to understand. Examples of what to do and what not to do are very clear and provide many "aha" moments when you realize how much better a piece can look by following the tips/suggestions in the book. Essential reference book for any graphic designer from beginner to advance.

Because "there's more to Web design than Photoshop and HTML," Robin Williams Web Design Workshop covers everything for the working Web designer including "how to survive dealing with clients."

Although Dreamweaver, GoLive, Photoshop, and other applications are mentioned (Flash even gets its own chapter), the book covers the gamut of Web design and technology issues rather than focusing on an individual application.

Each chapter is divided into sections, often no more than a couple of pages long. The chapter on backgrounds, the area of a Web page that seems to attract the worst design crimes, shows you how to avoid "the heartbreak of bad background design" in no less than eight sections.

In many books this subject would be lucky to get eight paragraphs; Robin Williams Web Design Workshop uses a clear two-column layout and plenty of real-life example screen shots to get the message across. Some pages consist only of captioned screen shots providing a great source of visual ideas.

There's a good balance between purely design-related issues and the technical stuff. Subjects like search engines, embedded fonts, DHTML, and forms are given a thorough overview, highlighting the main issues, and links to sources of more in-depth information are often to be found at the end of the chapter.

If you like to learn by example and see yourself more as a designer than a programmer, but want a working knowledge of current Web technologies from a book that you can read away from your computer, this is it. --Ken McMahon, amazon.co.uk

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding, uniquely useful book.......2006-05-27

Because web sites are made with computers, somehow it seems that the vast majority of authors of "how to make a web site" books focus almost entirely on the technical aspects, as somehow devoid of relation to the practical art of making sites that work.

This book is remarkable, because it is written from the point of view of working, experienced web/graphic designers.

As the authors make clear, making a web site is a lot more than just using a computer and making pretty pictures. They clarify what you really need to know about the entire process. It covers everything about the development cycle, from clarifying the site requirements with the client, to making thumbnail sketches, to practical, nitty-gritty details of how to make an interesting, "non-boxy" site.

If you want to really understand the entire process of developing effective, beautiful web sites for people as a business, this is the best book I have ever seen on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Web Design guide.......2006-02-25

Robin Williams does an excellent job of providing clear suggestions, good rationales, and lots of examples to make her point.

5 out of 5 stars Worn this one out.......2005-01-05

Several years ago I met with the main designer at company that created the web pages for several pharmaceutical distributors in Canada. At the time, I was well versed in creating web pages using several of the professional programs including Dreamweaver, as well as writing code. The designer, however, said that they did all of their designing in Photoshop and then used a slicing technique in ImageReady before editing the site in Dreamweaver. I hate to admit it, but I had never heard of creating web pages that way, so I went home and began looking through all of my web designing books to see if I could find a description of the technique. Yes, I found it in this book.

I don't want to give the impression that this book is all about Photoshop, it clearly isn't. But, at least for me, the Photoshop information has been extremely useful! Though I do not design the majority of my sites using Photoshop, there are some that I could not have created as easily with out it. I have not used other applications that supposedly are similar to Photoshop/ImageReady, so I can't say if they can or can not do the things that Photoshop/ImageReady can.

Nevertheless, since the time I opened this book and took a real look, I have used this book more than any other web books on my shelf. Sometimes it is to simply look at the pictures to spark a new idea, sometimes it is to review a specific designing technique.

Honestly I do not think Robin can write a bad book.

3 out of 5 stars Some great information but not worth purchasing.......2004-11-05

I borrowed this book from the library to see if it was worth purchasing. It has some great design tips and ideas but nothing that can't be found in other books in greater detail. The glossy color pages make it fun to browse through, but there isn't enough detailed information on the various design topics.

I skimmed through the book within two or three days and don't see it as an item I will bother to purchase for my personal Web design library.

This book is very focused on the design aspect, which makes sense, since it is titled "Web Design Workshop". Just don't expect to see any html or javascript in it. Still an awesome book though - very very good design advice for the web.

5 out of 5 stars From a Survivor.......2003-04-28

William Watkins pointedly and proudly explains how people other than the African Americans have guided the principles of Black education in the United States from the Reconstruction era to post World War II. Whether these people acting philanthropically as John D. Rockefeller or as "evil geniuses" (Chapter 6), they have shaped Black education then and some would argue for all time.

In his writing, Watkins shows that there is a view of the history of American education that does not come from the larger culture. Watkins view is from the "other side of the fence" that is not written by the victors but rather a survivor. This view is equally important as it establishes the fact there are always two sides to every story. "History is made by people in struggle" (p.179).

Generalizations tend to pervade Watkins' writings as the use of the words "few" and "many" are consistent. But this is understandable considering little or no empirical research was being conducted regarding Black education during this time period.

Pointing to the past for blaming is not the purpose of Watkins in his book, but rather an enlightenment of the history presented by a survivor of slavery, segregation and racial inequalities that have existed for generations. Truly, Watkins has offered a view of history in which we can reflect upon and use to help guide a new generation of architects.

5 out of 5 stars White Architects.......2003-04-28

William H. Watkins writes about the power of education and how it "can be used both to oppress and to liberate." (pg.1) Watkins shares with us how research and science in the last century validated the belief that Whites were the superior race. This belief has played a great role in the development of the school system and curriculum we have today in America. The "White Architects" have used the school system to keep races of people oppressed. He clearly defines who the architects were and the role they played in orchestrating the school system we have today.

I believe that in order to see more success among minority students in schools today we have to restructure the whole school system. Watkins book strengthens my belief. He states "public education was product of historically, politically, and socially constructed ideas." These ideas need to be updated and remade to include all races equally.

4 out of 5 stars The White Architects of Black Education.......2003-04-28

Mr. Watkins walks us through an historical and turbulent era of education that continues to have ramifications in our present educational system. Watkins journey through the maze of black education exposes the political and socioeconomic influences of the dominnant and affluent white culture of the north. He reveals to the reader the influences of the corporate magnets of the north who wanted cheap labor and subserivent workers. They used their philanthropy and the educational system to imposed their own philosophy of education on the black population;while promoting subserivent lifestyles for those who participated. Mr Watkins is able to convince the reader about the political and economic hold that the corporate world imposes on the black population and the disregard these men had for how the black population wanted their education to progress.
Mr. Watkins continues to show us the need for continued political and socieconomic justice for all people and warns us of the continued influence that corporate America has on all of us.

5 out of 5 stars A New Foundation for an Old School Structure.......2003-04-26

William H. Watkins is subtle in his story of the "white architects" who developed Black education beginning in 1865, just at the end of the Civil War. Watkins shocks you with his "scientific racism" platform that he explains "presented human difference as the rational for inequality" and that it "can be understood as an ideological and political issue" (pg. 39). The reader senses a calm attitude about the author as he speaks of the Philanthropists, beginning with John D. Rockefeller, Sr, who was most concerned about "shaping the new industrial social order" (pg. 133) than he was for providing a useful education. "The Rockefeller group demonstrated how gift giving could shape education and public policy" (pg. 134). In their support of Black education, by 1964,the General Education Board (GEB) spent more than $3.2 million dollars in gifts to support Black education. This captivating book begins with a forward written by Robin D.G. Kelley who reflects that she learned one lesson from Watkins, "If we are to create new models of pedagogy and intellectual work and become architects of our own education, then we cannot simply repair the structures that have been passed down to us. We need to dismantle the old architecture so that we might begin anew" (pg. xiii). Why don't the school reformers who mandate educational laws experience such an awakening?

4 out of 5 stars White Architects-Bad Design.......2003-04-26

William Watkins' "The White Architects of Black Education" gives an historical and sociological perspective to the progress, or lack of progress, related to the education of African Americans in the United States. This is an excellent resource for those people who have an interest in how the educational system of the mid 19th century through the mid 1950's was crafted in a way to limit the progress of African Americans during those times.
It is interesting to read about how famous Americans such as John D. Rockefellers Senior and Junior, and Andrew Carnegie set up philanthropic foundations to improve the lives of Black Americans. Even though they had what appeared to be benevolent intentions, the reality was that they perpetuated a continued system of racial subservience.
We see not only white men of influence involved, but also conflicts between those African American leaders who differed on plans to educate children. W.E.B. Dubois criticized Booker T. Washington for, what he called, "submission and silence as to civil and political rights." Many felt that Dubois' remarks about Washington would create a diviseness among Black leaders.
Though education for African American children has improved over the past century, this book points out why progress was slow and why we haven't yet reached a truly equal educational system. This part of American history should be a part of general history texts, not separate add-ons to sociological and historical course work.

Book Description

One of the most popular Macintosh books ever written, The Mac is not a typewriter has been called the "Strunk and White of typography." Best-selling author Robin Williams's simple, logical principles for using type to produce beautiful, professional documents are as true now as they were when the original edition was published in 1989. This updated edition includes new examples and expanded information dedicated to the practical advice that made the first edition an enduring bestseller. Throughout, Robin shows you the small details that separate the pros from the amateurs: typographer versus typewriter quotation marks, en and em dashes, tabs and indents, kerning, leading, white space, widows and orphans, and hanging punctuation. If you prepare documents, you'll find The Mac is not a typewriter, Second Edition an indispensable guide. And those who read your documents will recognize the work of a pro, even if they don't know a curly quote from curly fries.

I bought the first edition of this book when it came out, and I just bought this copy of the second edition because I wanted it.
This book is an extremely valuable reference book. If you follow the pricniples set forth in this book, your documents will look professional.
Robin Williams if the premier author of Macintosh books, and of books on design. All of her works are more than worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars A quick and easy read for every writer who cares about looking professional........2007-01-13

I'm reminded of Shunk and White's "Elements of Style". Short, correct, and invaluable. That's what Robin William's book is for people who care about the look of their written word on a computer. It's easy to make your work look professional and "The Mac is Not a Typewriter" shows you how.

5 out of 5 stars short read, great information.......2006-11-16

For first time mac users, this book is a must! It has great pointers and tips to understand some things most people don't know. It shows you differences in symbols, and shows you key commands that are useful and helpful. I learned a lot from this book.

5 out of 5 stars It's still here! .......2006-03-26

I am so glad this book is still around! I had forgotten what a great, useful, overview of basic typographic principles this "little gem" is.

I teach a Graphic Design class for non-Graphic Design majors in an art college. I was stunned to see most of the students putting two spaces after periods in a book they were making in my class. I explained why this was uneccessary (and in fact wrong) with most typefaces available on the computer, and they said they had all learned this in computer classes in the various high schools they had attended.

I unearthed my copy of this book (from 1990!) and brought it in the next week. Some students went to Amazon right away and bought it. Their work improved markedly.

I will make this a required text for the class next year, and advise anyone looking to learn the basics of good, typographic layout to purchase this wonderful little book.

4 out of 5 stars Must Have Book.......2006-02-07

This is a must have easy to read book that Mac users should have in their library. It provides helpful tips on how to make your designs look professional and help out with the work flow.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for the new Mac user........2007-01-26

It's probably too basic and not technical enough for the real "geeks" out there, but for someone who just wants to use their Mac and run applications on it, the book is more than adequate. Very easy to read and it makes a great reference book. Diagrams and color illustrations are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2006-02-25

It is excellent as far as it goes. I wish it was somewhat easier to use by being more complete.

4 out of 5 stars About Mac.......2006-01-30

I like Robins ways of teaching, and her book is great. For me it is a bit confusing as I have to keek refering back to other sections. Otherwise great.

2 out of 5 stars Poor effort.......2005-12-11

Robin Williams usually does a superb job - she's fun to read, has a perspective which is easy for the reader to understand and puts information clearly while not talking down to readers.

Not this time. If you want a book which tells you more than the very simplest of info about Tiger, don't buy this one. I'm an intermediate level user and I found that there are many glaring gaps in her lessons. I ran into many snags in getting used to switching over from System 9 and she didn't address any of the problems. Nor was her basic information about how Tiger operates useful in helping me trouble shoot the problems.

I wouldn't recommend the book to a new user either, because it was so superficial.

A minor irritant is that the editor (or somebody) did a very poor job of proofing it. There were a significant number of typos throughout the book.

2 out of 5 stars Basic Basic Basic.......2005-07-20

The best I can say about this book is that the author seems to mean well and writes with a light, fun style. If you're a VERY brand new Mac user AND if you're intimidated by more advanced technical information, this book may be for you. Otherwise, save your money and you'll get better info from the various 'help' screeens on the Mac itself.

4 out of 5 stars a good read.......2007-07-02

The art work is nice but I always felt that Cassandra Cain (Batgirl) should be prettier. The nose is bit too big in this graphic novel. The change of character from "destruction daughter" needs more explanation probably from the coming issues.

4 out of 5 stars Robin: Wanted.......2007-06-28

At the start of Robin: Wanted, our young hero is being pummelled by blows from an unseen assailant, not depicted; all we see are the hits to Robin's body. This seems a bit of a 'cheat' to hide a killer's identity, although the flipside is that it makes us identify with Robin's suddenly disjointed point-of-view. He is ambushed so quickly and effectively that he is thoroughly confused , and unable to to identify his attacker in even the slightest way. Actually, this technique seems reminiscent of films where a stalker or killer is always depicted in shadow, or partly obscured, or running away in the distance, until that moment when the lighting is finally helpful and the killer is revealed. In the case of what's happening to Robin, though, we have a fairly prolonged fight where effort must be taken to show that Robin is not a careless amateur who can't detect a single clue about who is in close, clobbering him. This is achieved by having Robin's vision hampered by floodlights, and some smoke, so that Robin ends up looking quite proficient at holding his own in a difficult situation. In the end, the feeling of a 'cheat' is cleverly negated; the plot demands that neither Robin nor the reader easily discern the identity of the attacker, but I would say that fights that go on for three pages where we don't see one of the combatants--just black streaks of motion like hostile wet-paint--are not very exciting to look at. Interestingly, when the ambusher later goes on to attack and kill a petty criminal named Annalea, we see more of the attacker revealed--a leg, two hands gripping Annalea's head and preparing to Do The Twist. And since the killer's identity is successfully hidden then, I don't know why Robin couldn't at least have been shown to be fightingg a human being, not deadly ink smears.

Next, two invasions of two near-impenetrable fortresses for the price of one. Robin is forced to infiltrate a Gotham City Police station in order to retrieve a Batgirl costume taken off the body of a girl he is accused of murdering, so he can search it for clues that will help clear his name. Later on, it is also necessary that he sneak into super-secure Blackgate Prison to break out the notorious David Cain, so he can hand Cain over to the person who has framed him and is threatening to execute a hostage Robin cares for deeply. Both of these incredible stealth missions go a long way in showcasing how talented Robin really is, especially Robin's effectiveness against an army of cops who suddenly become aware of his presence in their own building. Robin's technique for eluding not only regular police officers but also an elite, organic, free-range, hickory-smoked, Cajun (sorry: forget "organic, free range, hickory-smoked, Cajun"; I've been reading too many slick, trendy product labels at the grocery store lately, and I apologize. Just: elite) team of SWAT personnel specially trained, armed, and armored to subdue costumed-types a lot tougher than a non-powered Batman sidekick, is not entirely original. But still fun to watch. Inevitably, we see at least thirty cops outsmarted by one guy, which can strain credibility, but always makes the hero look so good.

The finale of the first story: Robin confronts the person who has framed and manipulated him, and so the mystery is solved. The lesson here is that things are often much simpler than they appear, and sometimes all the complicatedness is designed to hide the obvious. Readers not hoodwinked will still be treated to a tense stand-off between Robin and yet another small army--this time they're assassins not cops--and then a terrific fight, this time with no combatants obscured by tricky lighting or artists not drawing them in. Robin's best bit here comes from quickly deducing how to take out a whole lot of highly-skilled foes really fast, with one splendid maneuver.

Wanted also contains a whole other adventure for Robin, as he and his enemy, the new Captain Boomerang, search for a bomb that was activated long ago by the Joker--we're talking a very loooooong-range plan on the part of the Crime Prince of Clowns--a bomb that is not where it is supposed to be. Someone has moved the bomb just when, after many years of merrily ticking away, it is about to go off. Robin's crime prevention is impeded somewhat, by some study-time with his new tutor, by some quality time with Bruce Wayne, and by his squaring off with Boomerang in a flurry of thrown projectiles issued from both sides. But eventually Robin and his new, barely tolerated ally start breaking into various old Bat-foes' hideouts, looking for a naughty, dirty bomb ready to count down and go boom. This is a fast-paced romp, handled fairly lightly despite the bomb threat, as our heroes battle booby-trapped villains' nests, not the villains themselves. The mayhem-festooned room that actually hosts the bomb is especially entertaining, given the nature of its single-minded...occupants.

This bit of retroactive plotting--the Joker having planted a bomb way back in the Englehart/Rogers, Joker-fish days, that no one knows about til many years later, when its boom is about to find its ka--is fairly contrived. But the slice-of-life subplots, and the inclusion of the despised Captain Boomerang, help dress it up nicely.
