Interesting But I Didn't Always Agree.......2007-10-04

My sixth grade teacher assigned this book for homework, and we had a field trip to go see the Spike Lee movie when it came out. When a freelance writer and I had a discussion about Black leaders, she suggested that this book should be required reading, and I'd forgotten so much besides the most standout things that I picked up the book again. There are things that I don't agree with, such as Malcolm Little's ideas on how women should be checked and physically put in their place. There are things that I didn't agree with in Muslim religion, such as calling people White Devils. I understood where he was coming from, but after awhile, that just got old and I wanted the book to move on...quickly.

However, as with the movie, I was very interested and admired Malcolm X a great deal when he started paying attention to the world around him. It was interesting to watch the transformations he went through before he was unfortunately called to death way too soon. I'd be very interested in seeing his early notes, watching him go from not being able to tell what a verb was to writing the last word in the dictionary. Out of all of the things I respect about Malcolm X in this book and from other historical lessons I've learned is that no matter what the subject, if he wanted to talk about something or get it done, he didn't sit around waiting on someone else to do it. Every single event in this book was something he either played a part in organizing or made sure to get the ultimate results.

Masterpiece Revisited.......2007-08-04

I read this book once about a decade ago and felt it was my civic duty to read it again. This book is the gospel truth. Reading it was deja vu. I blink once or twice feeling like I just witnessed a scene described in the book. There is nothing radical about this piece of work. It is an eye opener and often times people will put a negative slant on this story or any story of this calibre when they don't want the truth revealed/discovered. I recommend this book to every breathing human being, especial blacks, negroes and the "n-word" as we were branded. The book is personal, political, emotional and above all a forecast of the present state of America. Read and process it and pass it on!

One of the best books I've ever read........2007-07-22

You can't have a discussion on race in America without reading this book first. I loved the movie, but this books will leave you with a lot to think about, which I don't believe the movie does. It has totally opened my eyes. A must read!!

A Must Read for Everyone --- Especially Black Men---.......2007-07-09

This book has seriously changed the way I view the world around me. As an African-American male who once led a life "in the mud" as Malcom would describe, it is inspiring to see how far one can rise. History has truly committed one of the most heinous crimes in keeping his life hidden away from mainstream society. Even if one does not agree with his thoughts, words, or actions, you have to agree with his conviction and dedication to change. This book will be a required reading for all members of my family.

Good, but ULTIMATE SACRIFICE the best book ever
While I thought this book was worthwhile in many respects, ULTIMATE SACRIFICE is simply the best book ever on the JFK assassination.Still, worth your time.

Very investigative!.......2005-01-05

Probe Magazine has always fascinated even lone nut theorists.
The reason why is because it was an extremely investigative Magazine.
James DiEugenio, Lisa Pease, etc have been known for their tireless investigative research into the true circumstances surrounding the death of America's 35th President.
Now, you can read the wonderful articles that the Probe writers worked on concerning the conspiratorial Assassination of not only John F Kennedy, but also the suspicious assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
Some have said that perhaps these assassinations werent merely isolated events, but that they were all connected in some way.
This is not far fetched when one considers that Bobby Kennedy was shot within a week after he said "Only the powers of the Presidency will reveal the true circumstances of (JFK's) murder" or words to the effect.
Also J Edgar Hoover, who clearly must atleast be suspected in the murder of Martin Luther King Jr, was THE man in charge of the "investigation" of JFK's death.
Also Hoover hated Bobby Kennedy with a purple passion.
It may be true that the same establishment that felt threatened enough by JFK that they decided to kill him, may have killed his Brother to remain in the shadows that they had hid in since '63.
And Martin Luther King Jr, had, at times, made the same enemies, that the Kennedy brothers had.
One cant help recognize the eerie similarities between Lee Harvey Oswald and James Earl Ray.
Whether these assassinations were related or not, this is for certain: This book will really make you think about these assassinations, if you havent before.
This book is so interesting, you will want to read it and reread it again and again.

Not only is this the best book about the assassinations I've read, but these are the best reviews I've read on Amazon. No stone is left unturned and I weep for the past and fear the future. I will NEVER trust the media to tell the whole truth again. After returning this to the library today, I will buy this book for my collection. Thank you to the authors.

Essential Reading.......2003-07-26

Besides the furious establishment media counterattack, Oliver Stone's JFK lead to the release of long surpressed documents and evidence and the re-flowering of research and publishing concerning JFK's assassination. Probe was the best journal to come out of the post-JFK enlightenment. It is now, sadly, defunct but Feral House has published an anthology of Probe's best articles, some revised and expanded, along with some new work. The Assassinations is edited, as was Probe, by James DiEugenio and Lisa Pease. James DiEugenio is the author of Destiny Betrayed: JFK, Cuba and the Garrison Case, and he also provides a commentary track on a recent DVD reissue of Stone's JFK. The anthology covers the assassinations of JFK, Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy, and Malcolm X with over half of the 677 page paperback volume dedicated to JFK.

Perfect intro to a complex man.......2007-10-11

I grew up in the days when "great black leader" meant Dr. Martin King, Jr. I read X's autobiography, but found the man hard to like or understand. This small but fact-packed graphic novel is a great help to understand the forces that shaped Malcolm, and the changes he underwent.

The novel lays the context for the story with swift, deft strokes that show the experience of blacks in America's history, from slavery to Jim Crow. The story shifts to tell of X's parents, and covers his childhood, young adulthood as a petty criminal, eventual jailing and conversion to Islam, his hajj and his assassination.

There's a lot to learn about X in this book, much of which was (with attribution) taken from his autobiography. Without saying it in so many words, the books reports inconsistencies in stories he told about himself and the recollections of others. His mother claims not to recall the story of facing down racists while pregnant with X.. The book is also honest about his criminality (as was X himself) and his association with the Boston and Harlem drug and club scenes, including experiences with conking his hair and his dalliances with white women. X's jailing gives the book an opportunity to explain X's attraction to the Nation of Islam, and explains NOI's distinction (due to its myth of white devilry) from other branches of Islam. Malcolm comes across as an intense man of great persuasiveness and integrity, whose incredulity at the sins of NOI's leader, Elijah Mohammed, are laid as the cause of his murder.

This is a quite honest book that lays out the facts and lets the reader decide what to make of them. Was X an effective leader? What is his legacy? What if he had chosen not to challenge the NOI's cult of its leader? The sense of "what might have been" hangs heavily over the book.

The book is drawn in stark black and white, fitting for a man who experienced the world that way and for the basic racial clash of his time. The book's timeline slows down dramatically toward the end, which covers the lead-up to X's violent death. The sense of impending doom, paranoia and creeping dread are expertly conveyed.

It's hard to pin which age group would be most appropriate for the book. There is no graphic sexuality, though marital infidelity and prostitution are discussed. Drug use is discussed, but not glorified. Definitely a book for high-schoolers, with some mature middle-schoolers thrown in.

"Malcolm X" admires its subject without flattering or praising him beyond what his own admirers said about him -- or by whitewashing the less savory elements of his life. X was many things, but in the end, a man, like King, whose religion afforded him a vision of a world in which the presence of racial hatred did not have to be taken for granted.

This book was obviously written by someone who hates Malcolm X. He had nothing positive to say only negative. He even went so far as to make the reader feel as though everything that Malcolm ever said was a lie. He portrays Malcolm as a person who hated himself but I believe it is the writer of this book who hates Malcolm and his family.

Questionable.......2004-06-23

This book is good if only for the insight into Malcolm's childhood. Other than that, it makes too many cynical conclusions based on whatever it is the author was trying to get across-- which by the end, is still unclear. Reading the introduction one would assume that this book was poised to breathe new insight on Malcolm the political figure and man. However, what you end up getting is more of a repetitious editorial piece. The author almost insults the intelligence of the reader by constantly rehashing the possible reasoning for Malcolm's every move. At one point, he suggests that Attallah was favored by Malcolm because of her light skin (like his) the way his dark-skinned father had once favored him. Perry also volunteers the very real and most likely possibility that Malcolm took this particular daughter to different events because she was the oldest of the girls. This is just one example of how he insists on giving the reader something to ponder on Malcolm's sincerity as a Black leader, tangible or not. There are parts of this book that indeed ring true with me for what I have interperted Malcolm to be, but these instances are too few and far between. I was in no way expecting an idealized picture to be painted here, only this book offers no real balance. Beyond this wounded Malcolm he avidly portrays, what else was there? Also for the attention he gave to alleged homosexual activity, arson, etc. he mentioned Betty Shabazz sparsely as if she held no importance in Malcolm's life. I found that fact very telling. After supposedly over 400+ interviews, Perry could only gather enough to give the mother of Malcolm's six children passing mentions. I actually got more of a rounded glimpse of Malcolm the man in the biography of Betty Shabazz by Russell J. Rickford. I advise those who are thinking of reading this book first to check out the autobiography w/ Alex Haley instead, then tackle this one if you wish. Even for all its omissions and probable half truths, you'll come away from that book actually understanding something. After reading Mr. Perry's biography, you get the urge to so say, "So?! What was your point?"

Approach With Caution.......2001-07-08

You have to question what Perry wanted to achieve from this book. He seems to have missed, or overlooked, all of the important issues that Malcolm X stood for.

He takes the word of Malcolm's detractors as the gospel truth and diminishes Malcolm's teachings and beliefs by portraying them as paranoid.

Perry seems obsessed with highlighting flaws in Malcolm's personality and uses this device to side step the vital lessons which Malcolm was trying to teach - lesson's which still need to be learnt today.

By all means read this book, but do so very objectively.

I was not too fond of this book, not because I'm a Malcolm fan, but there are too many conclusions that Perry makes with weak evidence. Such as Malcolm's father (and Malcolm himself) setting their houses on fire, Malcolm's alleged homosexual activity, Malcolm asking the Klan why they allowed Dr. King to live, etc. etc. One could see why Dr. Betty Shabazz (Malcolm's wife)told Perry to get lost!

Bruce Perry's Malcom gives an in depth analysis of one of the most controversial public figures in modern American history. Perry describes Malcom's troubled childhood in the Midwest, from his bouts with his father infidelities and his unexpected death -ruled accidental, but not certain-- to his, light skinned, mentally ill mother who was not afraid to keep her son in line by any means necessary. Living within a dysfunctional family and having no friends, Malcom finds himself wanting to leave his lonely and slow-pace lifestyle for the exciting East Coast. Moving in with his half-sister in Boston, Malcom becomes involved in criminal activities, from petty dope slinging and "runnin' numbers", to sleeping with white women and committing burglaries. Eventually he finds himself behind bars and from there Malcom X emerges. Known as Red, Malcom becomes acquainted with an inmate, a devoted follower of the Nation of Islam, who teaches Malcom that their is an alternative for black men other than a life of crime. Malcom X is introduced to classic literature, poetry, and Islam. The religion has a powerful effect on Malcom, who embraces its ways and ultimately becomes a follower. When he is released, Malcom X quickly works his way through the ranks to head minister of the most populated and successful Black Mosque in America. According to Perry, Malcom was not only a devoted minister to his mosque, but to several others as well. His superior, the honorable Elijah Muhammad, was initially impressed with the articulate, young orator. In time Malcom X rises in the movement. He grabs all of the headlines and from the media's point of view, becomes the spokesman for the Nation of Islam. Eventually, Malcom breaks from the group and starts his own, which never gets off the ground. He was shot dead during a speech in Harlem, New York in 1965. Malcom X, though poorly educated and a product of a mentally and physically abused household, nevertheless took center stage and improved the quality of life for Black America. Bruce Perry gives the reader a personal account of one of America's enigmatic and flamboyant intellectuals of the twentieth century.

It's not that I disagree with a review of this book, "an excellent read for the black youth of today". I just feel that whatever useful tools and social benefits this book presents, and there is literally a truckload of them, they cannot be segregated.

A Quality comparison.......2002-10-10

The late Louis E. Lomax (1922-1970) wrote this book shortly after Dr. King's assassination. He traces the path of both leaders. He shows the forces that brought the 2 leaders together on many issues. He also show the opposition forces to these men that materialized into assassins. I recommend that you read this book.

Priceless Wisdom that still rings truth.......2006-09-20

This is the first book that I've ever read through it's entirety. It simply had me spellbound from beginning to end. This is one of the most important books on race relations and political sabatage as there can be on America. It holds up a mirror to our society , so we can see what has been and what is. To know yourself and love your yourself is the most powerful possession that we can have as an American people and as a Black man. Malcom X ,lets us into his world and see things as he sees them. And it's as accurate a description on life in America as a Black man , as I've ever known. Truly inspirational , heartbreaking , and motivational. It changed the way I look at myself , my country , and my destiny.

Black Muslim : All White is NOT Alright.......2007-06-01

If there is one book of worthy inspiration, guidance and
wise careful detour AWAY from Wicked Racism Fascism,
it could be

The Autobiography of Malcolm X (TAO M.X)

penned by one of the most Thoughtful Soulful Beings
to ever live in North America :

Malcolm X

someone like Mahatma Gandhi... even gunned down
like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. K, JFK and many, many other
righteous martyrs, living in opposition to The Evil Empire.

The most interesting parts of this book were M.X views about
world history, according to the instructors of M.X, such as the
Reverend Elijah Muhammad, who revealed a different history to
white wash history, such as the possible existence of Atlantis
and the Big Head White Devil, Lucifer, whose cruel persecution
of the "lesser" races possibly invoked The Fury of Allah and
The Angels, to destroy Atlantis, a possible real event of
great destructive magnitude, still hidden from the masses...

because "Knowledge is Power"...

and Human elites rule over Mankind through Ignorance...

So TAO M.X is a book of alternate perspectives, the type book
Human elites would want hidden from The People, because of
its truthful investigative admissions and revelations...

Such as

1. Inter racial sex business (pimping, wife games, etc)

2. Chains of slavery caused by drugs (alcohol) and brain wash,
constant insane affirmations to completely false and mistaken
"popular" dogmas and rhetoric, that have little if any basis in
fact, and are used to enslave Mankind to ruthless diabolical
Human value systems

and

3. Human wars such as the Vietnam War, a meat grinder of
extreme hypocrisy, that destroyed the lives and families of many
of North America's Black African ghetto Youth, Nature's Sacred Sons,
born into poverty and despair in sickly EuroRussian invaded,
conquered and dominated North America.

I offer these reasons for any caring reader to get ahold of this fine
work of conscience and empowerment:

1.

At various points of my younger life, I could actually "hear"
the speeches of Great Black Leaders, such as M.X and Dr. K. via
my Third Ear of psychic sense, so I heard these Great Leaders
raging against Wicked White Ways... from a far distance...

TAO M.X was written by one of the great Black Leaders
of all time.

2.

Also there was a point in my life when a fine young Black Muslim
was murdered, to perhaps to forbid me from experiencing
the Righteousness of Islam, the Validity of Black Islam
and anthing of mainstream Islam!

(The person was serving in the military, in the same unit
as me, and very much in credit, avoided White Evils of
*White Poison*, White Smoke and other Wicked White Ways,
and honestly seemed to be a fine very decent person,
but "disappeared", supposedly AWOL, absent without leave.
Several months later the submerged body was located
by a nearby bridge. Cause of Death : Gunshot to the Head.
To this day I attribute this murder to be a DELIBERATE
attempt to prevent me, and others, from coming to Love
and Know the Beauty of Islam, "The Other Side" of Life,
and anthing that would threaten the Evil Empire.)

TAO M.X is partially about Black Islam and could reveal
some of the background to possible massive sponsored
suppression of Black Islam in the USA and elsewhere,
by the Forces of $Evil$.

When People are forcefully impressed into poverty and despair,
and build dreams, hopes and lives of caring sharing INSIDE,
then these People acquire Power GREATER than ruling Human power...

And Divine Beings living as descendants of African slaves in
North America certainly have/had plenty of this Power...

TAO M.X is an excellent expression of that Power:

It can be a book of empowerment, liberation and discipline via
Righteousness, Conscience and Struggle as written best
by Malcolm X.

But keep in mind that many Black Slaves were originally
captured and thrown into slavery by "Moslem" slave traders:
"Black Slavers", traitors, invaders and deniers of Pagan Natural
Sacred Africa, in the name of "Islamic" Judaism, the ruling
circle of Slavery, in partnership with "Christian" Judaism...

In my Soul I give TAO M.X Five Stars, but due to Black Muslim
relations with a certain carnivorous blood thirsty human religion,
I can only rightfully give it Three Stars.

Praise Be Malcolm X and all Freedom Fighters !

I am not worthy.......2006-06-10

I must say I feel rather humble in my attempt to review this autobiography, hence the brevity of my Review. However I cannot sufficiently stress how the account of Malcolm X's life has given me as a native African (and gives the reader regardless of ethnic background) a crucially important Sociological, Philosophical, Political, Islamic and Pan African insight into African American culture and its' shaping in historical context.
