4 out of 5 stars Uprising on steroids..........2007-01-09

Uprising on steroids... is what I've heard this book coined as. It's basically a re-package of Uprising, flashier and in smaller chunks. I can see why it's geared toward the 18-35 market.

I liked uprising more, but I passed it to a close friend who didn't like to read, and he thought it was phenomenal.

My favorite section was Running Free. I've always loved the message of freedom and running wild found in the Scriptures, but there's something also to be said about the trials and disciplines that lead to that life-transforming freedom that we sometimes neglect to mention. A couple quotes from the book:

The transformation of our character is more revolution than reformation. It is forged from battles fought far more than by beliefs held. It emerges out of crisis, not out of classroom.

Our capacity to run free is related to our commitment to stand firm. There is a discipline of the heart that marks the free spirit. All of us long to play the song in our souls, and more of us would do so if it didn't require endless hours of studying the notes.

5 out of 5 stars great for group discussion.......2006-07-09

Erwin impresses me once again with his incredible understanding of Scripture and unique perspective on culture. This is a great book especially for discussing in small groups. The book is very thought-provoking and takes some time to get through but the practical applications are invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Little Gem.......2006-04-04

This is one of those little gift books that you observe a proliferation of in spring as people are preparing for graduation and other changes in life. It is truly meant as a gift, and as such it is a great little book. It is almost a work of art; most pages could be reprinted and framed as inspirational art. Most of the material appears to be new work, unlike most books of this type that are a rehash or synthesis of the author's thought or other books.

The way this book is set up you can read it from beginning to end the first time through, then go back to specific chapter's from time to time as a reminder, a challenge or an encouragement. The specific chapters deal with the topics as follows:

1. Freedom - Running Free
2. Truly Human - The Drowning Pool
3. Humility - Rising Out Of The Ashes
4. Grateful - Creating Out Of The Pieces
5. Perseverance - Coming Out Of Nowhere
6. Integrity - The Unifying Power Of Believing
7. We Need God - The Healing Power Of Belonging
8. Perseverance - The Sustaining Power Of Becoming
9. Courage - The Warrior's Heart
10. Generosity - The Generative Spirit
11. Fear God - The Divine Imagination
12. Servanthood - The Greatness of Servanthood

Even though this book comes in at under 120 pages it will help to call you to a deeper relationship with God and to a life lived for others. Some great quotes from the book are:

"Life is most enjoyed when we give ourselves away. Generous people give more than their things; they genuinely give themselves. In the most marvelous of ways, those who give most freely live most freely."
p.98

"When you fear God and nothing else, you discover the freedom to pursue great adventure."
p.105

"The scriptures remind us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom. Then what exactly does this mean? When we fear God, we fear nothing else. It is only in the fear of God that we find ourselves free from the fear of death, of failure, and all the other fears that bind us."
p.112

"We were created to be free. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you're also called to be free. Yet to experience this freedom, there must be an uprising - a revolution of the soul."
p.7

"An overwhelming number of us feel trapped in the lives we've created. The irony is that we are the cruel tyrants who hold ourselves captive, and the tragedy of our imprisonment reaches into the deepest caverns of our souls. Our passion to be free both ignites us and betrays us, and more often than not leads us to be consumed by an unforgiving fire.
The very fire that burns within us can destroy us."
p.13

"YOU CANNOT FOLLOW JESUS AND REMAIN THE SAME!"
p.26

"Talent without character is a dangerous thing. Talent fueled by character is a gift from God."
p.51

These are but a few samples of the great gems you will find within this book. Pick it up, you will not be the same.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring and thought-provoking gift book.......2006-03-03

Just in time for graduation season, J. Countryman is releasing STAND AGAINST THE WIND, a gift book from inspirational speaker and writer Erwin Raphael McManus. It is a combination of colorful images and photos along with portions from UPRISING: A Revolution of the Soul.

This 120-page gift book is littered with inspirational scriptures and thoughts. McManus is convinced that life is more than just the practice of living but rather an adventure and a journey filled with all kinds of excitement and risk. Everyone is created with a passion to live, and that's more than just fulfilling a list of religious rules. Rather, when we unleash our passion and desires, particularly those that were placed within us by God, then we can more fully live the ultimate life, the Christian life.

McManus writes: "When you make God your primary passion, He transforms all the passions of your heart. The result of this transformation is that it will be God's pleasure to fulfill those passions. When God is your desire, you can trust the passions of your heart. In this state you can most fully live a uniquely passionate life. It is not incidental that the death of Jesus is called The Passion."

In addition, he takes stabs at things that stand in the way of God, including selfish ambition and pride. He points out that people who have an attitude problem more often than not have an arrogance problem. This explains why two different people can have such varied responses to the same issue. The cure for such arrogance is honest humility --- the kind that requires repentance and controlled strength. He asks readers to replace the temptation of greed with the act of generosity. Such giving breeds forgiveness and, thus, healthy relationships with others.

He observes, "Gratitude and forgiveness are inseparable, as are ungratefulness and bitterness. When we are grateful, we see and experience life with a healthy optimism. When we lack gratitude, we move toward pessimism. An ungrateful heart always sees what's wrong with life. The longer we live without gratitude, the more embittered we become."

That's why gratitude naturally spurs optimism. As our hearts become more whole through Christ, they increase in their capacity to both give and receive love. But McManus doesn't stop with just these virtues. He presses on to raise issues of perseverance, courage and integrity. He argues that it's through our integrity that a context is formed for true courage. In other words, integrity comes with integration and becomes what we truly are, and it requires a bit of bravery not just to hide behind masks. In fact, integrity makes it possible for us to live in a heroic way with sincere love for others.

Overall, STAND AGAINST THE WIND is a well-written and well-designed gift book. The writing is truly inspiring, thought-provoking and challenging. And the colorful design adds rather than detracts from McManus's insights and wisdom. Recommend this book to friends who haven't discovered McManus as an author yet or pick up a few copies for the upcoming graduation season. You won't be disappointed.

    Book Description

Patrice Williams was happy living in Georgia with her grandmother, who called her “cocoa grandbaby.” Then her mother lured her to Chicago and ended up in jail. Now Patrice lives with her Auntie Mae, and her new nickname is “Puffy” – thanks to her giant poof of hair. But Patrice’s hair isn’t the only reason she sticks out: she cares about her grades and strives for the best. That’s why Monty Freeman, another eighth grader who lives in the building, asks Patrice to tutor his little brother. Even though Monty’s friends make Patrice uneasy, Monty himself is friendly, confident, and surprisingly smart. When he becomes her guardian angel, Patrice begins to think something stronger than friendship might be growing between them. Still, nothing will stop her from applying for a scholarship at prestigious Dogwood Academy – her ticket out of the project and a school populated by gangs and drug runners.

In her debut novel, Traci L. Jones presents a girl with grit she never knew she had, and a boy so inspired by her that he begins to take pride in his own abilities.

5 out of 5 stars Shiloh shepherd story.......2007-09-10

This is one of the most heartwarming stories I have read. I will be looking to get a shiloh shepherd in the future. A must read book.

5 out of 5 stars Growth of the Shiloh Shepherd in the Dog World.......2007-08-01

As our family searched the web and library books for a dog to replace the two beloved "mutts" who had passed on after a good long life, we stumbled across references to the Shiloh Shepherd.

Without much effort we came across Tina's website as well as some of her licenced breeders. The brains, brawn and beauty of what we saw and read left nothing else but for us to buy the book, and learn as much as we could about the founder of this breed.

Needless to say, the story is motivating, at times heartbreaking, insightful, and a story that had to be told as the struggle to maintain and establish this reputable breed continues.

Critics with personal vendettas or self-ineterest aside, no one can argue that Tina, as Breed Founder, has not always put her blueprint and belief in the proper development and evolution of the Shiloh Shepherd at the top of her lifetime agenda.

This book details the 40+ years she has dedicated to the effort, and now as the proud owner of a Shiloh Shepherd pup that descended from her bloodlines through one of her Canadian breeders, here's hoping Tina (aka Ma Shiloh), and this breed, will eventually get the recognition and credit they deserves from the rest of the Dog World Community.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly Amazing!.......2007-06-30

This is a truly amazing book about a truly amazing breed! I am the proud owner of one of Tina's shilohs. I knew a little of the history of the shilohs in talking with Tina's daughter Lisa, but this book gives an in depth look at the breed and the nature of these dogs. Thank God for people such as Tina for her dedication and persistence concerning this breed. I have owned many dogs over the years and loved each and everyone of them. But my shiloh has been the best one yet. He is highly intellegent and his beauty is beyond compare. He is truly a "gentle giant." Thank you Tina, for caring so much about this breed and writing such a heartwarming book about them!

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Story.......2007-06-20

I wholeheartedly recommend this book! It was a quick-paced, honest account of a woman's quest to fulfill a dream against many obstacles. Her destiny just happened to be a beautiful, rare-breed dog called the Shiloh Shepherd. Her story is a true inspiration to anyone who has encountered resistance, offering hope that whatever your God-given purpose - stay the course!

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BOOK!!!.......2007-05-21

What a moving story! The love of dogs by this unbelievable woman shows through so very strongly in this book. I highly reccomend this read because it reflects the determination of human beings as well as the dogs. You can't help but respect this lady and her story about "building a new breed of dog".

    Book Description

As he leans over the body of an unidentified five-year-old girl shot in the back on a shabby London street, Superintendent Richard Jury knows he'll be facing one of the saddest investigations of his life. His colleague DI Johnny Blakeley, head of the pedophile unit of NSY, thinks he knows where this child came from—an iniquitous house on that same street, owned by well-known financier Viktor Baumann and fronted by a woman named Murchison. Blakeley has been trying to wreck their operation for a long time.

While examining the body of an unidentified woman murdered in the gardens of Declan Scott's estate, Angel Gate, Brian Macalvie, commander of the Devon and Cornwall police, realizes he's been here before. Three years prior, Declan's stepdaughter, four- year-old Flora, was abducted while she and her mother Mary were visiting the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Shortly after that, Mary Scott herself died, and Declan was devastated by the loss of his child and his wife.

“He really doesn't need a body in his garden,” says Macalvie.

Joined by the intrepid Melrose Plant, now a gardener at Angel Gate, Jury and Macalvie rake over the present and the past in a pub near Launceston called the Winds of Change. With one of their most serpentine investigations under way, all signs point to the guilt of Viktor Baumann, Mary Scott's first husband and Flora's father. But when no one in this case is exactly who he seems, how can Jury be sure?

4 out of 5 stars JOINING THE PARTY.......2007-05-26

This recent Inspector Jury novel by Martha Grimes will have readers in two categories, those who know the series already and newcomers to it like myself. I find that I take to the style, and I suppose the best commendation I can offer is that this story has interested me enough to go back to the start of the series and get to know Jury and his associates. The author does not do much to introduce them to first-time readers by this stage of the game, the cast of new characters is quite large and I was constantly having to flip back a few pages to remind myself who was who, and Grimes shows awareness of this matter on p217 with a quiet and wryly humorous reference to the 87th Precinct series in which readers are likely to experience the same problem.

Ms Grimes is apparently American, and her command of the idiom of British crime-writing is impressive. Slip-ups are few and minor. In Britain we write `ploughed' and not `plowed', we do not refer to a cell-phone but to a mobile, and it should hardly even have needed a glance at a map to tell one of her characters that Kirkcudbright (so spelt) is unsurprisingly in Kirkcudbrightshire and not in Dumfriesshire. The style of crime novels and TV detective series in Britain has come on a bit since the palmy days of Hercule Poirot and Lord Peter Wimsey. I could not imagine Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers and the rest of them going anywhere near the topic of paederasty that features strongly in The Winds of Change - even Chandler would never have touched such a theme - but I recall it from the TV series A Touch of Frost. Detective inspectors with cultivated tastes are also now familiar from Inspector Morse, Jury and his friends give a good deal of prominence to Henry James, and I will be surprised if both of these series have not influenced Ms Grimes to some extent. Influences are perfectly legitimate and to be expected, but Grimes has the first quality that I look for in any novelist, namely a distinctive tone of her own. This is rather understated, in what is sometimes thought to be a particularly British way. Two people are found murdered near the beginning of this story, but the scenes are described with detachment. Indeed even the more sordid aspects to the narrative are treated with that, and this way of doing it is definitely to my own liking.

There is not a lot of `action' in the ordinary sense (shooting and whatnot) until near the end. The main focus is on the detectives as people, and they spend most of their time talking, and not talking exclusively about their investigations. The actual plot-line is not, I must say, my idea of the strongest I ever came across. It depends heavily on not one case but two of mistaken or unperceived identity which seemed to me approximately as convincing as those in Cosi Fan Tutte or Twelfth Night. However I finished the book with a reasonably strong idea of the more important identities of Jury, Cody and the others who are presumably delineated clearly for beginners in the earlier novels. To that extent, Ms Grimes has got herself one genuinely interested new reader who is likely to pursue his new interest, and I don't suppose I can say fairer than that.

5 out of 5 stars What Child Is This?.......2007-04-18

I've avoided the last few Richard Drury mysteries because Martha Grimes loves to finish on a depressing note and I haven't been much in the mood for that recently -- I think I'm getting soft. But, without doubt Grimes is one of the finest detective story writers working today, so it is inevitable that I would eventually put aside my finicky attitude and read another one. I chose the Winds of Charge to start off, and what a lucky choice it was.

The story starts with a child shot dead in a London street. The prose of this opening section, centered on the lonely body and Jury's conversation with the pathologist is unnervingly poetic and even when Grimes returns to her normal writing style the images of this opening scene stay with you throughout as each character enters, plays their part and displays their own haunting wounds. The second murder is at the mansion of Angel Gate in Cornwall, Brian McAlvie's territory, where a few years ago another child disappeared and her mother dies not long after. Now a nameless corpse follows and the two mysteries, the two unknown dead, seem related somehow.

Related in part by the dark shadow of a child abuser who, thanks to his wealth, has been able to operate just beyond the reach of Scotland Yard. Piece by piece, aided by Sergeant Wiggens, Jury assembles a story which yields glimpses of a tragedy that may very well surpass Jury's own abilities to cope. This is a very dark tale indeed, and underneath the set piece humor of Wiggens' strange health habits and Plant's inept efforts at being a consulting gardener are the people who think that children are a commodity and that what they do to them is a form of love.

My hat is off to Grimes for managing to do all this without getting lost in unnerving, gritty details. There is a time for that, as Andrew Vachss has demonstrated, but Grimes chooses a more urban style that gets the point across without destroying the nerves of the reader. This is an altogether satisfying read, with some hints that there may be more to follow. If there is, I'll be in line to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Old Wine Shades, but it helps if you have read others in the series.......2007-04-15

Richard Jury is definitely a too-good-to-be-true character, but no less likeable for that. There is great humor and dry wit scattered among the personal tragedies of various characters, including the investigating police and the victims/suspects in crimes. I liked this one better than her more recent Old Wine Shades because of Jury's introspection and Melrose's difficulties with gardening and children. I recommend this one to anyone who has read other books in the series, so that you're already familiar with the main characters and typical situations they find themselves in, and so that you can appreciate the references to characters who usually appear in the Jury novels but are met here only as 'off-camera' asides.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-04-16

I have to come to the defense of Martha Grimes on this book in view of the many detractors. Having read all of her Richard Jury mysteries I was glad to see a new one after what seemed like a long time. Jury is , of course up to his usual dark gloomy, melancholy ruminations, but, that is to be expected. It is for the excellent plots and characterization of others in the story that keeps me coming back and in this book, Grimes has not let me down. Tho a little short on the Long Pid menagerie's appearance (Plant excepted) her portrayal of the adult interactions with children is superb! Loved every line of it and as a Grandpa I can attest to it's accuracy and entertainment value.

Though dark in subject matter the outcome was especially satisfying and Jury's actions and "detecting" were again suberb. Contrary to some of Grime's Jury novels, this one left me feeling satisfied at the end

3 out of 5 stars Note to Ms. Grimes: Please End This Series.......2006-03-26

I've read all the Richard Jury mysteries, and most of Martha Grimes other works. This despite the fact that, beginning about 10 years ago, the quality of the books declined steeply. Her large stable of regular characters seemed to be trotted out in each volume just to air them out, most adding little to the substance of the book. Worse, the plots became paper thin, often relying on very shaky devices. In "The Winds of Change" we have three crimes in play, two murders and a disappearance. Not to give the plot away, at the conclusion of the book one realizes that the connection between these crimes is tangential, and that two depend on assumed identities that are incredible.

Martha Grimes still writes well -- her descriptions are evocative, her dialogue crisp, and her regular characters amusing. But for the last decade they seem to be plodding along in very predictable ruts.

So, Ms. Grimes, if you read this, please hear my plea. You must be in your 70s by now, and you really ought to think about giving your stable of characters a proper ending. Have Jury bed the obviously willing Carole-anne (although, since he's a wartime child, meaning he's in his sixties, I don't understand the attraction). Have Melrose set the dogs on his aunt. Have Wiggins the hypochondriac actually get sick and have no one believe him. SOMETHING to bring a little drama to this little set piece. Agatha give a final curtain to her characters; you can too.

    Book Description

In the early 1990s anthropologist John Sherry lived with Leroy Jackson and Adella Begaye, leaders of Diné CARE, a Navajo organization dedicated to protecting the environment and its links to Navajo culture. Land, Wind, and Hard Words is his account of the founding, activities, and evolution of Diné CARE, whose original mission was to protect the Navajo forest from the ravages of industrial logging. Sherry's intimate account of the daily lives of this group of activists reminds us of the threats facing local communities and the people trying to defend them. Not least among these threats are the many demands of the “outside world.” From meetings with lawyers or do-gooder environmentalists to the cutthroat world of fundraising, every encounter with outsiders affects the work, draining time and resources away from direct participation with the community and even affecting the way activists think.

Because of his friendship with the Jacksons, Sherry was on the scene during the aftermath of the mysterious death of Leroy Jackson in 1993. His vivid account of the resulting journalistic feeding frenzy and heightened conflict on the reservation adds an unusual dimension to this intimate and unpretentious story.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and beautiful storytelling.......2005-04-04

This is a beautifully crafted personal account of the early years of the Navajo environmental justice organization Dine CARE (Citizens Against Ruining our Environment), which has worked for more sustainable forestry practices, protested the siting of toxic waste dumps near native communities, and fought for restitution for Navajo uranium miners. The author demonstrates an admirable awareness of the feelings and motivations of the community and individuals he is describing, while remaining conscious of the limitations inherent in his perspective as a white outsider.

"Land, Wind, & Hard Words" interweaves the narrative of how members of this community came together to found Dine CARE (including descriptions of some of their early struggles against government and industries) with excerpts of Navajo legends and more academic commentary on topics such as the disconnect between such grassroots groups and the fundraising system that claims to want to support them.

Anyone interested in the environmental justice movement will find this book a rich source of information on its potential and challenges. Anyone interested in native issues, Navajo history, or the Southwest in general, will find it a compelling story. 4 out of 5 stars Amazingly accurate and insightful.......2002-05-30

Dr. Sherry's unique humor and his insighful wit made this book a pleasure to read. It's obvious that Dr. Sherry is a man of values, courage, and spontaneity. I applaud Dr. Sherry for his efforts in really bringing to light the activism portrayed in the chronicle. While Sherry's other works were "farcicle," this one has all the makings of a gem.

My only concern is that this book is repetitive and obligatory at times. Dr. Sherry, you might want to be aware of this in future publications.

Excellent read on fascinating topic. Kudos to Mr. Sherry on writing a book that is academically rigorous yet accessible at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars A mix of historical and present day.......2007-09-18

Margaret Coel has written another book that is a nice balance of historical information and present day life on the Windy River Reservation. In this book, she concentrates on the Bates Battle that occured in the late 19th century. It was a war between the Shoshones and the Arapahos, and nothing was ever the same for either tribe again. When the book opens it appears to Father John that someone is trying to recreate this infamous battle when he is directed by an annonymous voice on a tape to the site of the battle. When he gets there he discovers three executed Shoshones. These murders open up a can of worms between the two tribes again which could break out into bloodshed and tear open old wounds. The story is a cliff-hanger from beginning to end, and will keep you on the edge of your seat while you wait for Father John and Vicky Holden to figure out what actually happened. This is a truly wonderful series and I love every book!

4 out of 5 stars Historical Arapaho mystery.......2007-08-14

The Eye of the Wolf is another Father John O'Malley and Vickie Holden murder mystery.

The last major Arapahoe battle took place in Bates Canyon. An early morning attack was mounted against the village while the members were peacefully sleeping. Many of them were killed before the warriors were able to slip away, gain the mountainside and try to protect their homes and families.

Now bodies are found on the battle scene, bodies that have been positioned to resemble the old tintypes appearing in many books from that era. Vickie Holden's defendant, Frankie Montana, was seen arguing with the three men whose bodies were later found at the Bates Battlefield. Vickie is a close friend of Frankie's mother and, although not convinced of Frankie's innocence, still feels obligated to defend him.

This story again develops the relationship between Father John and Vickie Holden. It also deepens the beginning relationship between Vickie and Adam Lone Wolf.

I enjoy this series, Margaret Coel's knowledge of the Arapaho Indians is impressive and she always tells an interesting story. Her background is an integral part of the novel, she sets her scenes very carefully and they help create the feeling of crime and destitution.

Father John O'Malley and Vicky Holden are at it again. They're both involved in another murder mystery that will have an effect on the well being of the whole tribe. A suspect has been arrested and Vicky is defending him, but is he the murderer?

The murder victims are Shoshones, members of the other tribe that shares the Wind River Reservation with the Arapahos. If the culprit isn't brought to justice soon warfare could break out between the two tribes who are ancient enemies.

Vicky and John's feelings for each other haven't changed. The new assistant priest is on to them and threatens to expose Father O'Malley to the bishop. Will this be the end of the Jesuit's time at the mission? Read it and find out. This is a great series and Margaret Coel is one of my favorite authors.

What a waste of my money. I thought this book was going to be good from the reviews, but I was let down in a big way. First, did anyone proof this book at all. I was so confused that I thought I was losing my sight. Thank God I wasn't. I was just reading a book full of errors. Second, the story was not believable in any way. The whole crock of Leslie being stalked by the Faron guy made me cringe, because it didn't make much sense. I want to kill you by throwing pebbles at your window? I don't think so Gwynne.

    **SOME SPOILERS BELOW**
Romance novels tend to be formulaic, and Against the Wind is no exception. In the hands of an inexperienced writer, a romance novel can be so cliched it becomes a caricature. A good writer, however, can breathe new life into a tired formula and create something fresh and exciting.

I think Ms. Forster tried to change it up a little and give Against the Wind--as well as Leslie--an edge; but I wasn't convinced. I'll give Ms. Forster credit for her depiction of Jordan, the gruff university professor/farmer with a good heart, although he came across a little stuffy for a 36-year-old (I don't know many 36-year-old men who drive Lincoln TownCars). I'll even give her credit for allowing the relationship between Leslie and Jordan to be challenged by more people than just Ossie and a couple of anonymous brothers in a restaurant. However, I can't overlook the lack of character development of Leslie, the main character.

Yes, we know Leslie was almost raped; and, yes, we know she's been running from Faron Walker; but it still doesn't round out who Leslie is, which ultimately makes everything she does ring hollow.

Another element of the story that made it read amaturish was Ms. Forster's insistence on making the majority of the characters in the story orphans. Leslie's parents were dead, and she was raised by her mother's best friend. Jordan's parents both died at the same time, and he was raised by his uncle. Clifford's parents both died at the same time, too; and he ended up being raised by his uncle, Jordan. See a pattern? Sheesh, it's tough to be a character in this book. More than likely you'll lose your parents and end up living with your uncle! And speaking of uncles, Leslie's uncle Franklin, who just happened to be her father's identical twin, popped up in the story about mid-way through and then kinda disappeared, having served very little purpose except to partake of Jordan's holiday hospitality. Huh? Was his appearance in the story even necessary other than perhaps to be a red herring in the whole stalker side story? Uncle Franklin was more of an unpleasant distraction and didn't really serve to further the plot, which should be the purpose of any character. However, this is one area where the author is at least consistent. Poor Franklin didn't escape the whole death pall that hangs over this story. He told Jordan that his parents were dead and so was his long-suffering wife.

As for the race issue in this story, I felt that the author made it a very big deal. How many times did Leslie stew over the fact that she was black and Jordan was white and that other people wouldn't accept that? I didn't expect to read an IR and race not be somewhat of an issue, so it made sense that it would be mentioned; but I don't think it was conveyed in a way that advanced the story. While I think Ms. Forster attempted to show a realistic reaction to Leslie and Jordan's relationship through Ossie and Julia, it sometimes came across corny and unrealistic.

As an editor, I found the grammatical errors glaring. Just for the fun of it, I used a red pen to circle the typos, transposed letters, omitted words, and phrases that were accidentally duplicated. I didn't even bother with the incidents of awkward sentence structure or misplaced punctuation. Unfortunately, some pages were pretty red. On one two-page spread, there were seven mistakes. That's a bit much. I gave up about halfway through the book. Oh well. With a good proofreader--and I strongly suggest one for future reprints--all of these things can be cleared up and will at least make Against the Wind a much easier read. I don't blame Ms. Forster, though. If you have ever worked in publishing, you know that all that stuff should have been caught by a proofreader or copy editor before the book ever rolled off the presses.

Despite my criticisms, I congratulate Ms. Forster on Against the Wind. It's a good concept; and, with a little polishing, it could make an intriguing IR.

5 out of 5 stars Took it as it was and Loved it...........2007-01-18

I read this book cover to cover in about 24 hrs and I comfy saying that I really loved it. Sure there was a slip on the editing but its a book. As far as the dialogue and the seriousness of the story. I can see the happennings in this book clear as a bell. The story was just as it is a story. It was very entertaining and very romantic. Being that my name is Leslie (& AA female) it was all to easy to see myself in her place. Jordan reminds me of a man in my life that has much the same story so this one really hit home with me. I would recommend this to anyone that reads books as they are as Fictional whims that you could loose you day in. I will read this one over and over!

    2 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading - .......2006-12-24

This book was interesting, but there were too many typographical errors in this print of the book which frustrated me as well as disappointed me. The main characters were not what I expected. I have not finished the book and not sure that I want to. Don't buy it - borrow it.

1 out of 5 stars Was this even edited?.......2006-11-19

The blurb made the characters seem interesting....WRONG! First, did anyone bother to proofread this? The typos were rampant and annoying, the grammatic errors were frequent and the story was just underdeveloped! One minute she's running from him and the next they're sailing? Too many unfinished scenes to keep track of what was taking place. Besides, if the author doesn't know who's speaking from one moment to the next, how am I supposed to?

The female lead's reason for running was extremely weak and her reason for hiding the story was even weaker.

The male lead didn't really have a reason to fall in love with her. It seems like he fell in love with the first woman who didn't run from him.

The relationship between the two characters never developed and in the end, I wanted them to be together only to end the story.

The Transformation of a New Age Medium and His Warning to the Church; Running Against the Wind is a relevant and crucial warning to believers and an evangelistic tool to those caught up in New Age and Eastern spirituality.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Read with Caution.......2007-10-12

This book, although it provides some interesting information on the New Age and some Christians who have gone off the deep end in merging Christian worship with other religious practices, also misrepresents some Christians' views. It is sad to me that some people decide to trust the information and viewpoint expressed in this book over and against the judgment of their own pastors and church leadership, whose wisdom and character they have seen lived out before them for many years. I strongly encourage anyone who is considering buying this book or others by this publisher (Lighthouse Trails) such as Yungen or Oakland to check out the Lighthouse Trails website first and see exactly how fringe this thinking is and how they are attacking and dicrediting people and ministries that have had a trusted evangelical track record for years. I think their "movement" has become a witch hunt, and their approach is destructive. I also would encourage people to consider that Flynn, by his own account in the book, was disciplined out of his church for what seems to me like creating factions, causing dissention and divisions, and refusing to submit to church leadership.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL CHRISTIANS!.......2007-09-05

This book is a must read by all Christians!!! Today, churches and bookstores (even Christian bookstores) are full of non-biblical, New Age ideas and authors that are doing a great job of leading believers off the narrow path and onto the wide path that leads to destruction. Brian Flynn does a great job of exposing the New Age practices and concepts that have infiltrated Christian theology. Not only does he give you his view (as a former New Ager), but he also gives the reader lots of examples, along with references, so that his statements can be verified. I couldn't put the book down! Fast and easy reading...Buy two or three so you can give copies to your friends!

5 out of 5 stars Jesus said many will be misled..........2007-06-07

Brian Flynn's background as an avid New Ager, then becoming a born-again Christian, makes what he has to say fascinating and eye-opening. He describes how Eastern spiritual practices and concepts are seriously spreading through the Church. He shows how they do not enhance the gospel of Jesus Christ, rather they oppose it and destroy. His logic is pointed and down-to-earth. For example, he says if Eastern prayer methods never brought a Hindu or Buddhist to a saving faith in Jesus Christ, then how could they bring a Christian closer to God? They will not. Instead we hear of Christians receiving revelations that all paths lead to God and God is in all! Brian also "names names", which has brought him rejection from some pastors. However, teachers can say so much that sounds Christian and "good", that one can assume the teacher is really OK unless they are named and the error specified. One teacher whose writings he discusses is Richard Foster, who was an instructor of mine while I attended George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon from 1975 -77. This was before his first book came out, "Celebration of Discipline". He was quite popular with the students and I liked him as well. I remember him leading our cass once in a guided imagery session. We were directed to picture ourselves traveling in our spirits above the clouds, meeting Jesus, and listening for Jesus' word to us. I felt a little uncomfortable, but I did do it. It seemed a little "weird" and unnecessary, so I never pursued it. It wasn't until years later when I read Dave Hunt's book, "Seduction of Christianity", that I realised something was actually wrong with it. Brian's book further clarifies how this is an unbiblical and very dangerous method of "prayer" to God. It is so easy to overlook error when it is mixed with Truth. It is easy to dismiss it as a mere disagreement than as the serious danger it is. I remember Foster's appeal in college being he wasn't stuffy, and he was a seeker for more of God. He certainly seemed Christian. He was thought-provoking, kindly and wanted our lives touched with the gospels. But I still should have evaluated his teaching by God's Word. We should do that with anyone's teaching! "Running Against the Wind" definitely helps us do that. King David Said, "From thy precepts I get understanding, therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:104,105.

1 out of 5 stars A warning to all spiritual aspirants.......2007-04-21

I am rather surprised at the lack of critical reviews of this book, so I will offer one of my own. My own experience is quite the opposite of Mr. Flynn's. I am a former fundamentalist Christian whose eyes were opened to the truth of the mystical, pluralistic path and the dangers of fundamentalism. Brian Flynn is a dangerous fanatic who seems bound and determined to bring out the worst in Christianity and to suppress everything positive the Christian tradition has to offer. He fails to realize that the true essence of Jesus' teachings is quite harmonious with eastern spiritual practices. He tirelessly advocates the futile attempt to know God on a purely intellectual level, while condemning as dangerous and demonic any effort to truly know God on an experiential level, as Jesus himself did. If you would like to read a book that more accurately represents the true teachings of Jesus, I would recommend Paramahansa Yogananda's "The Second Coming of Christ."

5 out of 5 stars Putting on the Armor of God.......2007-03-20

This former New Age leader found God as a witness and renounced his pagan ways. Now, in earnest, he is preaching what the New Age does not tell you ... and why Churches must do a "call to arms" and defend from within from pagans in the pews. This is a testimony to read and heed. The New Age is now mainsteam and the danger is real of spiritual tampering from the very people who claim to help lost souls.

Please read and use your own counsel but remember .... not all things of light are good for you.

Learn why some of the most popular writers on New Age, despite their seeming sweetness, will confuse you if you are not careful: such as Doreen Virtue, Carolyn Myss, Sylvia Browne, and many others who portray themselves as guides for the weary.

    Book Description

The first-ever biography of an uncompromising revolutionary for Christ whose witness still reverberates around the world. Markus Baum, a prominent German journalist, presents Eberhard Arnold (1883-1935) as a role model for today's disaffected young generation.

Baum's highly readable account examines the forces that shaped Arnold's life. He recreates a colorful era when thousands of young men and women in Weimar Germany rejected conventional mores and struck out on a different path. Arnold, a young and aspiring writer and speaker, played a prominent role in this "Youth Movement," but later left the limelight to live the answers he had found, starting a small community based on Christ's teachings and example.

Against the Wind shows Arnold's wide-ranging influence on other spiritual leaders of his day, his lonely stand against the rise of Nazism, and his continuing legacy - the Bruderhof community movement - which makes his life as relevant today as ever.

This book will be significant for those who want to learn more about the life of Arnold and the spirit that moved him. To my knowledge this is the first biography of Arnold written by a non-Bruderhof author. I like Baum's fresh perspective.Orbis Press has also just come out with another fine book entitled Eberhard Arnold that readers of this book should look at. It is part of their Spiritual Masters series.
