5 out of 5 stars Change your Life!.......2007-10-17

I have been using the tools that Colin Tipping has outlined in Radical Forgiveness for 10 months and the miracles that have occurred in my life are amazing. I am personally in a group of 100 people who are all working this program. It is truly a life changing experience. I highly recommmend this book to anyone who has felt stuck, who wants more out of life, who has found that years of traditional therapy have done nothing to "fix" their life. If you've seen The Secret, or What The Bleep, and you ever wondered "what next?"...this is the book you must read. I promise you that you will have a life changing experience.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every person on this earth.......2007-10-13

Such an important part of learning about life! Get it for yourself and give it away as a gift. So great!

If nothing changes, nothing changes.

This book is not for the sqeamish. It requires intestinal fortitutde and is designed for the individual fed up with a life of misery and ready to walk on the sunny side of the street!

4 out of 5 stars A life-changing experience.......2007-06-27

I was skeptical at first, but I'm applying the principles, and I see my life changing before my eyes. Buy this book. Read this book. Live this book. You'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Make your own decision.......2007-06-21

I noted with saddness a negative review of this book. True, there really isn't anything 'new' in the Universe, however, each time a new person relates the information to us, it offers us a new opportunity to find if this person's words will resonate within. We are all beings of energy and it is helpful to remember that something has to resonate for us in order to have it make sense.

That being said, I applaud Colin Tipping's efforts. This book IS difficult at first (at least it was for me) but then the moment of clarity came to me and suddenly it all came together.. making sense.. and enriching my outlook on life.

Radical Forgiveness may well be termed radical SELF-Forgiveness. Either way you absorb it, it can help to modify your viewpoint of previous experiences, and embrace the future, and I for one am grateful that this book is available. I present workshops and it is always number One on my Suggested Reading List. Is it for everyone? Perhaps not, but you won't know unless you allow yourself to be open to the healing contained within the pages.

Book Description

What do your spiritual convictions have to do with traffic jams, job anxiety, reading the newspaper, or arguing with your spouse? Everything, according to Marianne Williamson. It is the way we live in our everyday world that determines the shape of who we are. So Buddhist or Muslim, Christian or Jew, it is the moment when our daughter doesn't make the basketball team, or our best friend lands our dream job, or our business instinct tells us to bury the guy across the boardroom table that tests and builds our living faith.

With an attitude of hope, a call to forgive, a celebration of miracles, and the promise of strength and grace, Williamson helps us find our sacred footing on ordinary ground.

No matter where we are or what we're doing, there is the opportunity to be happy, and to be holy. The large and small difficulties of our days challenge us to open our hearts and minds. And in this book of hours, Marianne Williamson teaches us to ride the currents that lurk in each of those moments of opening to a sea change of the soul.

2 out of 5 stars The Psychobabble continues.......2007-03-22

Marianne Williamson's take on grace, mysticism, miracles, and so forth are an attempt to bring feel good spirituality into life. Williamson's text, A Course in Miracles, is the basis point for her teachings. Everyday grace is one of the more recent hodge podges of spirituality offered in an eclectic mix from Williamson whose mantra of love casts out all fear continues in her theological constructs. The one thing is .... everyday grace is far more simple than it seems. Everyday grace is about being in the flow. Williamson conjures up more feel good spirituality which she is known for.

4 out of 5 stars I was surprised.......2006-08-06

I bought this book some time ago and never read it. All the hoopla turned me off (you know, Oprah and the like- I DO love Oprah, but she often picks such trying stories). Today I sat down with EveryDay Grace and pretty soon I was looking for a pencil to mark passages I want to find again. WOW. I wasn't expecting this little book to have messages I've been needing to hear. Of course, timing is everything, but I wouldn't pass on this book if you are looking for a way to connect your spiritual life with your everyday life.

3 out of 5 stars High Spirits and Optimism for Our Future.......2006-07-07

Purity of heart will not make us poor. THe exaltation of poverty as a spiritual virtue is of the ego. The ego is the great fault-finder. In 'A Return to Love,' she explains her interpretation of the fairy tale, "The Frog Prince": in this story, a princess kisses a frog and he becomes a prince. We all know that. The great exhorter feels that it reveals the deep psychological connection between our attitudes toward people and their capacity for tranformation. What the kiss signified is the miraculous power of love to create a context in which people naturally blossom into their highest potential.

A miracle worker is an artist of the soul, an artist who exposes the masks we all wear. The reason so many are obsessed with becoming stars is because they're not starring in their own lives. The cosmic spotlight is not pointed at you; it radiates from within you. If we wait for the world's permission to shine, we will never receive it. The dreaded ego doesn't give that permission. The ego's world is based on finite resources.

Love is the essential existential fact. To experience love in ourselves and others is the meaning of life. Love is the intuitive knowledge of our hearts in the forms of kindness, giving, mercy, compassion, peace, joy, acceptance, non-judgment, joining and intimacy. Love is within us. The world we knew as children is still buried within our minds.

Fear is the opposite of love with forms like anger, abuse, pain, greed, addiction, selfishness, obsession, corruption, violence and war. Forgiveness is the key to inner peace because it is the technique by which our thoughts are transformed from fear to love. It's almost impossible to let go of your perception of someone's guilt when you know that by every standard of ethics, morality, or integrity, you're right to find fault with them.

We need to let the past go; only love is real. Hate wins us nothing except enemies and animosity.

5 out of 5 stars Make Every Day An Extraordinary Day!.......2006-06-08

In Everyday Grace, my favorite spiritual author, Marianne Williamson, demonstrates the miraculous effect of living a life of unconditional love and forgiveness. Every single day, and in every single way, we experience grace, ease, joy, peace, and fulfillment when we connect to the divine spirit of love that lies within us. This is not an esoteric book. It is filled with practical examples of how to handle many of the common issues we all struggle with on a daily basis. Bless you, Marianne, for this inspired work.

Steven Lane Taylor, Author of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide for Living Life in the Divine Flow."

5 out of 5 stars Soul Food.......2006-03-29

This is the best book I've read in 10 years. Marianne Williamson writes in a way that resonates with me personally. She is spiritual, centered and grounded. She takes a very practical approach toward improving our spiritual life. This book can offer inspiration to many of us as we face daily life.

5 out of 5 stars I love this calendar!.......2007-01-14

My husband bought this for us when I was pregnant with our first son. It's such a nice little way to track the baby's progress and we really enjoyed looking at it each night before bed. We enjoyed it all over again when I got pregnant with our second son. We liked it so much that we have sent several to friends upon learning that they were pregnant. Definitely recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for First Time Parents and Grandparents.......2006-12-14

This book is the best gift you can give a parent or grandparent to be! It was so neat to track what was going on for the baby each day - we learned so much about the amazing miracle of pregnancy. It makes this developing baby seem so much more real. Our parents enjoyed following along as well and discovering how their grandchild was developing. I can't say enough about what a great book this is. The author did a great job researching infant development and was able to come up with interesting and entertaining facts for each day of the whole 9 months.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely precious!.......2006-09-15

I got this calendar when I was pregnant with my first child, and I absolutely loved it! My husband and I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what was new with the baby. Even our family members began asking what the calendar had to say for that day. There were just so many cleverly written pages. I now give this calendar to all my newly pregnant friends.

5 out of 5 stars response from the author.......2006-06-19

In response to the two people who mentioned that the calendar is off by two weeks... It is important to follow the instructions given at the beginning of the book when filling in your dates. If they are not followed, you will be off by two weeks.

1 out of 5 stars I agree - nice concept, but INACCURATE!!!!.......2006-05-28

I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed how inaccurate this calendar book is!!! I bought two, used both for both pregnancies, and BOTH were incorrect!! They were always off by about two weeks! I had intentions on treating my friends to this book, but I'm glad I didn't embarass myself. Unfortunately I found out the hard way and wasted $30 on two for myself. Stay clear!

Book Description

Would you like to have the confidence, the kind of driving purpose, that shuts out all fear? Do you want your life to be filled with adventure? There are many kinds of soldiers, and the ones that this book is written for don’t necessarily wear a uniform. The missions these soldiers undertake have more than just political or historical significance—they are impacting eternity. Bulletproof is a field manual for the Christian soldier. It addresses the issues of fear and risk from a Christian perspective, using primarily military examples and analogies. Holton teaches believers how to overcome fear and join the ranks of the army of God.

Terrorism. Murder. Disease. Job Loss. Road Rage. Weapons of Mass Destruction. Environmental Disaster.

[Headline]:

What? Are You Scared?

[Body copy]:

By every sense of reason, you should be. By faith, you don’t have to be.

God’s soldiers are issued body armor: Peace that surpasses understanding. But you must choose to put it on. Chuck Holton reveals how to claim this peace of mind and rest in the sovereignty of God’s plan while stationed in our dangerous world.

Not denying legitimate causes for fear, Holton’s balanced perspective to living boldly as a Christian today offers refreshing hope in the midst of rampant anxiety. Because when you begin seeing things from the Commander’s perspective, you won’t have to dodge bullets.

Until your mission is complete, you are bulletproof.

Story Behind the Book

“In October 2002, a sniper started killing people at random in the area where I live. The community almost ground to a standstill, with people refusing to leave their homes, drive the streets, or send their children to school until the killer was found. What disturbed me most was the reaction of many of my fellow Christians—one of fear just like their unsaved neighbors. I felt we were passing up a perfect opportunity to model the peace that passes all understanding to a very needy audience. “Since then I have come to realize that the Bible, almost in its entirety, tells us over and over again that we should not be afraid. A life lived trusting God is a fearless, confident life that will draw others to it.”

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Unreadable if you're not Christian.......2006-08-22

For better or for worse, this book is not your standard personal growth tome. It is by a Christian, for Christians (only), and your enjoyment of it will vary accordingly.

Almost everything in this book premised on belief in Christ -- both in how Holton approaches fear and how he advises others to do so -- and if you don't accept Jesus as your savior, his advice and insights are completely useless.

If you're Christian (I'm not), you might find this aspect of it to be a net positive.

5 out of 5 stars Bulletproof.......2006-06-27

This last reviewer is apprantly numb to most things that tell it like it is. This book is an excellent tool for showing you the roots of fear and why you shouldn't fear. Chuck Holten tells it like it is, he tells what needs to be said.

This book will open your eyes to things in your life and give you some major insight into how Jesus views our lives.

1 out of 5 stars It made me feel numb. kinda like a bulletproof vest........2006-02-18

I didn't like it...
but then, I don't like Chuck Holton. (:

5 out of 5 stars I'm not scared!.......2005-06-20

I was never one to focus on fear or worry, in fact I was always confident that God was always taking care of me in His own way. Chuck's book really shined new light on how not to fear ANYTHING and trust in God, and only God.

As a father of two small boys, concern for broken limbs (or worse) is always haunting! Chuck's book made me realize that God saved me from myself when I was small, so why should I fear that He won't take care of my boys...according to His plans?

This is not only a great read for anyone dealing with fear, but all fathers (especially of boys) need to read this one. Thanks, Chuck.

5 out of 5 stars Living without fear.......2005-05-21

For years fear has tormented me. There are many experiences in my life that have contributed to this, but after becoming a Christian I wanted to totally free myself from this mindset. Chuck Holton's Book, Bulletproof, has greatly helped me to realize that we are able to live a fearless life under Divine protection, and guidance. I was especially touched by his chapter dealing with "bulletproof" children. He helped me understand about parental peace of mind, while also embracing responsible parenting. This book is a blessing to anyone struggling with fear issues. After finishing this book I have a renewed confidence, and for the first time in a long time am excited about living fear-free. Thank you, Mr. Holton.

Book Description

Twice chosen for People magazine's "The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World" feature, and widely hailed as the most captivating actress on daytime television, Hunter Tylo may seem untouchable, a star out of our orbit. Nothing, as she reveals in this candid autobiography, could be further from the truth. This is the story of a down-to-earth woman -- mother, wife, and friend -- whose grace and class in the face of extraordinary challenges are an inspiration. Meet the real Hunter Tylo and get to know a remarkable person.

As Dr. Taylor Hayes, the sexy psychiatrist of CBS's The Bold and the Beautiful -- seen by 350 million daily viewers worldwide -- Hunter brings to life a complex character whose "compassion can sometimes turn to passion, " as the actress describes her; it is this quality that exemplifies Hunter's life as well: she has emerged as a woman whose understated strength turns obstacles into triumphs.

Here at last, Hunter tells the complete story of her successful court battle against the producers of Melrose Place, who had fired her before she appeared in a single episode because she became pregnant.

But Hunter's motherhood odyssey has taken dramatic twists more heart-wrenching than any television drama. For the first time, Hunter tells the story of her infant daughter Katya's rare eye cancer -- and how her deeply rooted Christian faith has seen her through the ordeal.

With honesty and without pretension, Hunter Tylo also takes chances in Making A Miracle -- by revealing much that her millions of fans do not yet know, including a personal crisis that left her to make a choice no woman should have to make. Reading these candid revelations, you may come to see Hunter Tylo in a new light -- and perhaps understand more of who she is and what forces motivate her every day.

Beyond the glamour of stardom and celebrity, Making A Miracle is a story about motherhood; for Hunter Tylo, it is the role of a lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars She is NUTZZZ.......2005-12-21

Boy do I feel differently about this actress after reading this book! I gave it a 4 because it reads in a Jerry Springer sort of way where you can't turn the channel, or in this case the page, because you can't believe what you are seeing/reading! First of all, she abandons her kids REGULARLY throughout her life (I don't care what her great excuses were), the one son is near suicide (umm, ya think?!), and don't even get me started on her journey to and affair in a foreign land (hubby should have kicked her to the curb for good then and there!). Finally, the childish way she spins tales about another actress was in my opinion defamation of character and in poor taste. I don't care what reborn crap she is trying to pull now, she is a mess and has put herself first her entire life. Doesn't her TERRIBLE new face and lips scream "LOOK AT ME!!!" We're looking alright and running the other way!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you're a fan of hers, GET IT.......2004-05-20

I've seen Hunter Tylo on Days of our Lives and the Bold and the Beautful (describes her perfectly) and I can attest that she can act. I remember when this book came out and there was a lot of press about it because she really left no stone unturned. I finally got around to getting a copy last week. I haven't been able to put the thing down. I have 50 pages left. It's all in here: the domestic violence, the Spelling case, her dabbling in the Hindu religion. Through all these obstacles, Mrs. Tylo has come out the other end stronger and her family on more solid ground. God bless her for having the you know whats to write about it all because it all comes out.

5 out of 5 stars Facinating Read.......2003-04-15

The book starts with her leaving B&B in 1996, after she found a role with "Melrose Place". A few weeks later she learned she was pregnant, and out of courtesy told the execs at Melrose the news. Soon she found herself without a job, she was fired from Melrose because she was pregnant. She had enough issues getting the role, with her newfound Christianity she was concerned about the role she would be playing, in which they gave very few details and were evasive with their answers to her questions. We don't find out what happens as a result of her termination until later in the book, near the end.

She goes back to her childhood, to her first marriage where she was pregnant with her first son, Chris, and the tumultuous relationship she had with his father. Doing many commercials, she eventually found an acting job at "All My Children", where she met her future husband, Michael Tylo. At this point in the book we are introduced to their relationship, and it is a bumpy rollercoaster ride. She kicks him out, they fight over work, she gets him arrested, he tries to take her kids away from her, it was a constant battle. He lost his job at AMC after she did, and then she found work on "Days of Our Lives", being fired shortly after, then finding work at B&B.

She accounts her friendship with co-star at B&B, Kimberlin Brown, and the problems that happened there. Lots of history there. Then Hunter landed a role in a mini series shot in India and Canada, her marriage with Michael failing, she fell in love with a man over there who had her succumb to false religion, and she was manipulated. Her marriage at its final thread, more constant fighting, and it seemed everything in her life had gone down the toilet so to speak. Then she found her faith in religion again, and talks about how it saved her marriage. Then the Melrose fiasco.

The court case lasted an incredibly long time, and Spelling Enterprizes used every dirty tactic to make her look like a spoiled brat who was after their money. She was ashamed for a moment for considering having an abortion. I found this part of the book facinating, although disturbing that as she put it, they didn't want to admit that her child existed, not before, certainly not then either. She won the case, and during describing the trial, we learn of a shocking secret she had held within her for a long time, which I won't spoil here.

She got her job back at B&B and had two other children. Her first daughter, who she was pregnant with during the Melrose fiasco, Bella, and then she was pregnant again during the trial with Kayta. It turns out Kayta had a rare eye cancer disease, and Hunter talks candidly about her chemotherapy and the heartbreak she went through during this time, when she questioned her faith, and was left confused.

Overall a facinating read about Hunter's triumphs and tribulations in life, it's a shame she's not at B&B anymore, she really brought morality and class to that show that is now lacking on the show.

5 out of 5 stars God is good.......2002-11-08

I have just read Hunters book. It is honest and from her heart. Hunter shares her testimony, of how sin and life outside of God's love and ways brings only destruction to ourselves and those we love. It is a blessing to read how Jesus steps in to save and restore lives and souls. You can see God's hand upon their lives. She shares with us that there is a lot of healing and relearning to do, when we find God, for learning God's ways when you have been taught by the world is a long and sometimes painful and ongoing process. I thank Jesus for what He has done and is doing, in their lives, she has shared with us personal details and the miracles that God has done in her life. I believe that what she shared about her experiences with hinduism to be true, Hunter does not say in her book that she researched or did a thesis on Hinduism, rather she shares with us her own personal experiences, she shares that she could not find happiness in sex, money, and religion, that God showed her that salvation comes through His Son Jesus, and it is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from our sin. Many false religions do still sacrifice and see the blood as important in placating their gods, bringing healings and incurring blessing, it does happen, and Hunter saw this first hand. The hindues do worship many gods, Hunter shares with us what God showed her, that He is the only true God, and He does not come under the names of the false gods. God also tells us not to bring their images into our homes, for a curse will follow if we do, and she experienced what God said would happen first hand. Her writing style, her acting, her mistakes now are not the most important part of what she has shared, it was couragous of her to share so much with us, her honesty, trials and finding the true God. What is important is that Jesus, has stepped into her life, saving her and her husband restoring their family. It is a good book. Also when a person does find God and the truth, it is hard to explain to those whom do not believe in God, about miracles etc. and it is couragous of her to be so open about her experiences with God. Her book is not about research, Hunter has shared what she has gone through, and is still learning to understand, and from my own relationship with God, there is a lot of changes and relearning to do. So I am not going to stand in judgement of Hunter and say what would she know, as I see her experiences are real. I do not find Hunters book relgious for as a christian I love God, and am not ashamed to tell people, and Hunter clearly loves God, and wants to share how His love and mercy helped her and her family. I see her book helping others, a testimony of God's reality and love, and the reality of the destruction of sin in a life without God. For it is a wonderful story that she has shared with us, to see her family and marriage restored is the best news to hear and read about.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2002-05-22

I loved this candid account of Hunter Tylo's struggles, harsh realities and sincere honesty. This is a must read for anyone interested in a person triumphing over adversity. Walk with this incredible woman as she goes through the fire to come out on the other side. Hunter Tylo is truely a woman of integrity. God Bless her life.

Book Description

Ten years ago, doctors at the Mayo Clinic told thirty-four-year-old Greg Smith that he had an inoperable brain tumor. They gave him three months to live.

Today, ten years later, Smith is fit, symptom-free, and managing his tumor with an experimental hormone therapy--living proof that no matter how dire the diagnosis, you don't have to accept a death sentence.

How did he do it?

In this remarkable book, Smith draws on his own harrowing experiences, and those of other patients who "refused to lie down and die on cue," to show how medical "miracles" are made; from taking control of health care decisions to exploring experimental treatments; from finding the right questions for your doctor to finding the right doctor for your questions; from developing trust in your caregiver to developing faith in yourself; from battling insurance companies to battling the voice in your head that keeps asking, "Why me?"

Making Miracles Happen is not just another survivor's memoir. The story of Greg Smith's return from the threshold of death is certainly inspirational--and deeply moving, and even darkly funny at times--but inspiration is only part of the story. "My purpose," says Smith in the introduction, "is to be helpful." In pursuit of that goal, he weaves the eloquence and insights of doctors, as well as the hard-won wisdom of other patients, into the compelling narrative of his own story.

The result is a book that entertains, educates, and empowers at the same time; a book that inspires with information and insight, not feel-good nostrums; a book that doesn't just tell the story of how one man achieved his medical miracle, but lays out a road map that others can follow; a book that finally brings the light and air of reason into that darkest and most claustrophobic of all places in the heart: the fear of dying.

5 out of 5 stars My Miracle.......2006-02-24

I can relate to this great book!See,in 2001,Iwas suffering from an infection of the upper respiratory tract.Next thing I know,Iwake up.IN THE HOSPITAL.I had a seizure. No big deal. What happened next was:While having my seizure,I sustained a burst fracture of L1 vertebra.A spinal cord injury. My neurologist said I would never walk again. So of course,I was bummed. My mother, though, would hear none of it.She told me that these doctors are not God.They do not decide your fate.Only you do.Therefore,I decided to work my butt off in rehab.
Here it is 5 years later.Am I walking?Yes!Not only that I walk as well as I did before I got hurt.I work 2 jobs and generally lead a full life.
Mr.Smith's book says all the things I feel. The fight against self pity. The realization that your life will never be the same again. The hard work after. The nature of hospitals. The angels in one's life(my mother comes to mind as does the rest of my family and some good friends).
I feel like I was with him the whole time I read the book.I related to all of the stories he cites.I especially like his line that doctors are like weathermen.I say it all the time. They are NOT God...and I myself am a podiatrist.

I am in the process of reading this book. I just finished reading Chapter 3, A Doctor Is a Doctor Is . . . The information in this chapter is extremely important. It applies to all technical fields.

5 out of 5 stars Making my OWN miracle happen.......2000-08-16

Phenomenal and uplifting. That's how I would describe Smith's book. I purchased this book because I was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year, at age 22. A craniotomy and a long recovery behind me, I'm still left with part of the tumor, seizures, and daily medication. Smith's book not only led me through what he was going through physically and emotionally, so that I did not feel so alone, but it showed the other side: hope. Through many personal stories of people who had diseases ranging from emphysema to AIDS, amyloidosis to stroke, Smith shows the strength and power that hope, positive thinking, and an attitude of "I'm not giving up!" has had on these fighters. This book made me see that no matter how bad I think things are for me, someone is going through worse, but with a better attitude! Everybody knows someone suffering from a chronic disease. I recommend this book for sufferers and their families. Not only helpful emotionally, it is helpful practically, in showing that getting that second, or third, or fourth opinion may make the difference between not only horrible aftereffects of a surgery, but life and death. Most of all, this book leaves its readers with the message of "Don't give up!" I know I won't.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any person responsible for health care.......1999-09-02

This book should be required reading in High ?School...it let's the reader know how and when to use healthcare options, and how important it is to control one's healthe care and destiny.

4 out of 5 stars Incisive.......1998-08-12

Although the titles oozes with sap, Smith's book is full of original and interesting takes on the state of modern medicine as it concerns chronic and extremely life-threatening diseases. Especially relevant, I think, are his comments about being active in choosing doctors, doing your own research, and not simply accepting physicians' opinions as divine kernels of wisdom. Unfortunately, like many books in this genre, the writing tends toward the glib; patients' stories are seamlessly intercut with an enormous variety of material, from quotes from the relevant literature to interviews with leading research scientists. Good reading, though.

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle of 1060 and all that.......2006-09-01

MGM's movie, based on the book by L. Frank Baum,"The Wizard of Oz,"is nearly 70 years old. But its stars, Judy Garland, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Billie Burke and Margaret Hamilton, still shine brightly as ever, and the movie continues to be a particular favorite of young and old.

Aljean Harmetz is the daughter of a woman who worked backstage at MGM. Harmetz's mother worked in the Wardrobe Department; she was able to estimate sewing costs on thousands of costumes, from 1937 to 1951 --including the nearly one thousand needed for "The Wizard of Oz,"alone.

So starting from this birds' eye view, Harmetz is well able to explain how "movie magic and studio power in the prime of MGM" resulted in "the miracle of Production #1060." To that end, she did hundreds of interviews, with actors, singers, songwriters, cameramen, screen writers, costumers, directors, and technicians. She succeeded in bringing the great glory days of MGM, under its sentimental czar L.B. Mayer, to technicolor life.

Harmetz explains how the Emerald City was designed and built; how the cyclone was created. She tells us how Judy Garland's immortal "Over the Rainbow" was nearly lost, as envious, nitpicking producers responded after the film's first screening: "Why does she sing in a barnyard? Take it out!"

The author gives us fine portraits of Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch of the West--"she enjoyed every moment screaming about those slippers." Binnie Barnes, who played the Good Witch Glinda, retiring to her pink and blue dressing room to await her next call. Bert Lahr creating the endearing cowardly lion-- his costume weighed over 50 pounds. "It was like carrying a mattress around with you," he said. And he could only sip liquids once in full makeup. Ray Bolger, the dancer who created the Scarecrow, " I have no bones. I have nothing inside me. It's just the wind holding me up." And Jack Haley who inherited the Tin Woodman's part after an allergic reaction to the aluminum paste makeup, put Buddy Ebsen, first cast for the part, in hospital.

You should find you read these marvelously detailed pages with great enjoyment, and if you're as sentimental a fool as I can sometimes be, even with emotional involvement. If you love the movie, you might want to try to find this book.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie itself... if thats possible........2003-08-09

The making of the Wizard of Oz is a wonderful book to anyone who has grown to love the Wizard of Oz. You don't even have to be an obsessive fan of the movie like myself to enjoy it. It is extremely well researched. If information is not known the author says it so and does not attempt to recreate history as some nonfiction works do.

Perhaphs what makes the 1939 movie so wonderful is learning all the behind the scenes things that went into making it. This book gives respect and a knew sense of understanding as to what movie making was like in the biggest studio of that time. It is written so that it doesn't need to be read front to back. You can start in the special effects section and finish in the chapter about the script, or the music, or the directors (did you know there were four?).

Did you know that the movie had the work of 10 writers or do you know how the surrender dorothy scene was done? Well, in this book you find out his and thousands more did you know facts to impress friends. I recommend this to anyone who has watched the Wizard of Oz. And if Oz didn't win an academy award for best picture in 1939 than that was because the academy didn't have this book to help choose.

5 out of 5 stars A Peek Behind the Curtain.......2002-07-28

If you're a die hard fan of this classic film then you'll want to read this well-researched "making of" tome. The book is filled with all sorts of wonderful trivia tidbits but most of all it gives an insightful review of those behind the camera in a way I've yet to find in other "OZ" related books. The one and only shortcoming of this book is to be found in the number of pictures, in my opinion there could have been more, otherwise it's a behind the scenes look that most OZ fans won't be disappointed with.

5 out of 5 stars What a wicked world! Me, a cult icon from an MGM kid-flick!.......2001-09-07

It doesn't matter unduly if you didn't grow up watching MGM's 1939 color movie "The Wizard of Oz" in re-release or on TV. You might think that a "Munchkin" is what used to be called a "doughnut hole." You may think of Judy Garland only as Liza Minnelli's mother, and avoid prewar movies like the plague. Maybe you didn't feel that shock of recognition that "Cora the Coffee Lady" in Maxwell House TV commercials was none other than Margaret Hamilton, the green-faced Wicked Witch of the West.

Of course, if you love "The Wizard of Oz" you've love THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ all the more. I just read this book for the second time (the first upon its initial publication), and was astonished and pleased by how well it has held up. Author Aljean Harmetz has crafted a book relevant not only in terms of one particular "prestige" movie off the Hollywood assembly line; but indeed her insight, research and friendly presentation make the book stand as a metaphor of all Hollywood filmmaking during the height of the Studio Era, ca. 1940. Perhaps the late Irving Thalberg was one of the few Hollywood insiders who could "keep the whole equation of pictures inside his head," but Ms. Harmetz opens up this world for us, and shows us both its realism and its wonder.

We return to an era in which studio moguls were as eccentric and powerful as today's software barons, when studio hands were nonunionized yet intensely loyal to their studios, when no movie studio even thought about a future containing broadcast TV, when movie stars were better known than Presidents or Kings, and when Technicolor would give you any color except the one you wanted. Nonetheless, solving the creative problems inherent in bringing L. Frank Baum's novel "The Wizard of Oz" to the screen was seen as an invigorating set of challenges to be met and conquered.

Back then, MGM had a real "can-do" attitude. So no one had
ever created a moving tornado for a film? After two tries the MGM tech people got it right, and the depiction of that horrendous twister so set the tintype for what a tornado ought to look like that it persists in our collective consciousness today, despite today's ubiquitous video cameras.

There were no tape recorders. How, then, to raise or lower voices artificially for dubbing? This book tells how. What happened when Buddy Ebsen almost died from an allergy to aluminum dust he had worn as the (originally intended) Tin Man? Why was Margaret Hamilton burned severely and ignored, yet Billie Burke turned an ankle and was whisked off the set in a white ambulance? Why did the film need four directors and half a dozen screenwriters, yet was fondly recalled as a labor of love by practically everyone except a prematurely embittered Judy Garland? Was the film the great commercial and critical success you might think it would be? And, by the way, what about those Munchkins' alleged sexual proclivities? Excellent answers provided by excellent research present a fully-formed world view, warts and all.

THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ would be a wonderful companion to the new restored DVD version of the film, which is so crisp you can count the gingham checkers on Dorothy's blue dress (which was actually violet, to fool the Technicolor process). How were the ruby slippers made? What about that poppy field? Read on. Some critics have said that Harmetz's later work is not as excruciatingly well researched as THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ, but I don't care. This book and the movie are not only as much fun as ever, but a great education in the good old/bad old days of the Hollywood "Dream Factory." Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Look at the Old Hollywood Studio System.......2001-07-14

"The Making of the Wizard of Oz: Movie Magic and Studio Power in the Prime of MGM--And the Miracle of Production No 1060" is just downright enthralling. It is an expose' that breaks down the machinery and the machinations of what it took to get a major movie made in the days of the autocratic studio heads. The book offers an entertaining and totally engrossing look at the legendary film. Judy, Ray, Jack, Bert, Margaret, and Toto, too, are all analyzed in this brilliant work. The songwriters, the respective directors, the many other craftsmen, as well as the "little people," in more than the figurative sense, are all here. Vividly embellished with stills from the production, the book's text is just as captivating. The familiar as well as the unfamiliar stories about the production make for a most satisfying read for any "Oz" fan. It is also a good primer for anyone with an interest in pursuing film as a career.

Book Description

Adam Taliaferro had it all: smarts, an easy-going personality, and incomparable athletic ability. None of that seemed to matter, however, on that fateful September day when his father was given startling news: Do not expect your son to walk again. Ever. Since that numbing day, Taliaferro, the Penn State freshman cornerback who was paralyzed after tackling an Ohio State running back, has defied the odds. Before he had spinal-fusion surgery, he made a vow to his mother: "Mom, I'm not going out like this." Three months later, he walked out of a Philadelphia hospital on crutches, determined to complete his amazing recovery, making the name "Adam Taliaferro" synonymous with courage and perseverance.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENt book.......2007-05-25

This truley is an excellent book. I grew up in the same neighborhood with Adam, attended the same HS (graduate a year after) and every bit of information (names, dates, etc) are all correct. All the information about his character is completely true, he really is an inspirational person. Growing up in a huge suburban high school with him, it really was a very competitive atmosphere. Everyone seemed to love him because he was one of the brightest (one of the highest GPAs of his class, scholar athlete and best athlete in the school) along with being one of the most modest, down to early people ever. If someone had the will to succeed it is him. I recommend this book to anyone overcoming obstacles, down on their luck, athletes and basically anyone because it is the type of book that you can not put down.

5 out of 5 stars This really is a miracle!!!.......2002-10-09

After finding out that Adam Taliaferro couldnt walk again ever. His father and mother urged him to push on. His spirits were high always no matter what. This is a triumphant story about courage and self-determination and a little help from some up above

5 out of 5 stars This is a Great Book.......2002-08-07

This book is good for anyone whether you are a football fan or not. I personally am a football fan, and I would especially recommend this book for those football fans out there. This book is inspirational and well documented. It is also at a good price now, and it is a quick read.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling, but to drawn out.......2001-12-13

I'll be honest. The book compelled me for the most part. I couldn't put it down for the most part. I truly felt pain for poor Adam, and can't imagine going through anything like this story and still bouncing back. The only complaint I have is the book is too drawn out towards the end. Pehaps it was written to soon, perhaps the author felt the need to repeat himself 3 or 4 times. Still, once you get past this, the book is a good read and an amazing story. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to be inspired.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2001-11-23

All too often in today's world of youth sports; parents, coaches and players miss the meaning of sportsmanship. Having been involved in youth sports for 14 years, I have witnessed over bearing parents and tenacious coaches. I suggest they keep a copy of "Miracle in the Making" in their equipment bags. This book highlights the true meaning of a parent/child relationship and a coach/player relationship. Adam is the definition of courage, kindness and strength. His family's support during his recovery is awe-inspiring. The writers did a terrific job of bringing me along on Adam's journey to recovery. I will be on the sidelines cheering; watching as Adam wins the biggest game of his life!
