Great book for a new big brother or sister!.......2007-10-03
Purchased this book for 2-year old daughter before her brother was born. Would recommend purchasing before baby arrives so can talk about what is going to happen. This book has no words in it, but allows parents to talk about each page and what is happening. It walks the child through a typical day with a new baby...bathing, feeding, and even daddy taking them to the park (I always said so Mommy can sleep!). It shows the toddler helping with the baby and we were able to talk about safety and how things would change when the baby arrives. We purchased a few different books before 2nd child for 2-year old and this was the best one by far. Very simple, but effectivly gets the point across. Would recommend for any soon to be brother or sister!
Great discussion book.......2007-09-20
The lack of text made this book an excellent learning tool for the arrival of our son's baby sister.
It covers nearly all the situations that could happen once a new baby is introduced and puts all the attention of the big brother rather than on the new baby.
After our daughter was born, our son seemed to accept her new role in the family without question and I feel much of that ease was having talked about it using this book.
At one point, her crying was really annoying him and we brought out the book again to show him that this was completely normal. Worked like a charm.
My New Baby.......2007-09-09
My daughter is barely 2 years old and loves this book. She loves looking at the pictures and listening to the words I use to describe what's going on. The pictures are so cute that I don't mind that there aren't any words.
New sibling book.......2007-07-24
I bought this for my grandson to have when his new brother arrived. It was a big hit.
Great purchase........2007-07-21
I am very happy with this book. I love that it is only pictures so I can explain to my [..]about the new baby in my way. He loves it too and I think it is getting him excited for his new brother.

Book Description
In January 2003, Nicholas Sparks and his brother Micah set off on a three-week trip around the world. It was to mark a milestone in their lives, for at 37 and 38 respectively, they were now the only surviving members of their family. As Nicholas and Micah travel the globe, the intimate story of their family unfolds in the details of the untimely deaths of their parents and only sister. Against the backdrop of the wonders of the world, the Sparks brothers band together to heal, to remember, and to learn to live life to the fullest.

Travels with the ugly Americans.......2007-09-25
This is for the book on CD and I just couldn't get through it. From his loud brother yelling at the airport raising his arms up -- the overgrown frat boy -- to the same brother lying down on a Mayan temple and wondering why it's sacred and being offended that he couldn't get his picture taken on it. Of course, Nicholas doesn't call is brother out on this. What would Micah think if someone laid across a U.S. flag and wanted their photo on it?
They mock other cultures, laugh at pottery, are bored with much of the trip ... and the knuckleheads on the trip with them (I can't believe these people are college graduates) don't understand why Spanish is being spoken over the Super Bowl commentary in Peru. "What is he saying," they ask. You don't know what Spanish sounds like and you're stunned it's broadcast on Peruvian TV? Again, Nicholas has no comment on just how clueless these people are. The author without an opinion.
I continued to get offended by the rich frat-kid type brothers as much as Nicholas' boring, dry, uneventful prose. Also, some of the stuff they did as kids was more than just rambunctious, it was violent. (I.E. rolling people up in carpet and then jumping on them.) Of course, Nicholas -- ever the spectator without an opinion -- does nothing. Clearly the immature children barely grew up.
This is a frustrating read on the trip around the world by two arrogant elitists. Count me out.
A built-in fan club.......2007-09-03
It's apparent to me from reading all the hymns to Sparks' book that the legions of fans of his overwrought, over-emotional novels have flooded the reviews portion of this book, too. While I can't completely condemn the book, primarily because I learned something from some of the histories of the places the brothers visited, I would much have preferred more about the places themselves--NOT the brothers' reactions to them. Other reviewers have commented on the "Ugly American" aspects of their behavior, so there is no need for me to do it, suffice it to say that I agree with those reviewers.
I was touched by their grief over the losses of their parents, but since the children were adults by this time, I also wanted to say, "Get over it," people die and we move on. Sister Dana's death affected me much more, since her lingering death was faced with such strength.
This book has less of the tear-jerker writing style of Sparks' novels, but he still likes to stick in the "kicker line" at times, particularly after a death: "Dana was thirty-three years old" and "It was just the two of us now. Brothers." (The latter word on a line by itself.) Sparks may laugh all the way to the bank at those of us who criticize his writing style, but such obvious appeal to emotions has always struck me as unsubtle and contrived.
Nicholas Sparks best book so far!!!!.......2007-08-21
This is a memoir, unlike his other books, but it is by far the best he's ever written!!!
Nicholas finds a trip on line for 3 weeks around the world. He decides to take his brother Micah and it becomes a trip down memory lane. The sadness, excitement, and joy of their life stories are unremarkable! It seems unreal that someone can have this much grief.
You will LOVE this book!!!!
A good read.......2007-08-19
I've read quite a few memoirs, and this one was quite enjoyable. You know the gist of it from the description/s above: Sparks recounts his childhood while on a trip with his brother. While some parts of the trip were a little dull (that's okay, they were also bored with some of their trip!), it has everything you could want in a good read -- honesty, humor, sadness, triumph, etc.
If you like memoirs -- and even if you don't -- I think you will like this one! I recommend it.

Book Description
This book comes from the heart of a little girl(Sarah is eight years old)who has grown up with and who, with her parents, has been involved in helping her younger brother with autism to learn. The book is a testament to the parental support that has fostered a strong positive relationship between Sarah and her brother, with the result that even at a very young age, Sarah has become a strong advocate for Evan and other children with autism.
Customer Reviews:
So sweet and positive.......2007-01-30
We bought this book for our 6 year old, who is an older brother to our 4 year old autistic son. He loves reading it again and again because it so well describes his own brother. The sibling perspective is charming - and one that many adult authors simply fail to capture. A beautiful book.
Portrait of Love.......2005-02-15
This is one of the best books I have ever read by, for and about a sibling who has autism. Sarah, the young author of this book draws a rich portrait of her day-to-day life with her brother, Evan. She provided all the illustrations for the book and her family is a rich portrait of love and acceptance. The bright colors Sarah uses suggests hope and understanding. I like the way she explains and understands Evan's behavior; she knows he likes to chew on frozen foods and uncooked pasta because he likes the crunchy consistency. She understands Evan's way of communicating; e.g. she identifies the sounds Evan makes in response to certain circumstances, such has his happy humming when he is in water.
I loved the way Sarah used technical terms she learned from Evan's team intervention specialists. When she uses them, she says quite matter-of-factly, "All I know is we have fun." I like the way she interacts with Evan and accepts and loves him unconditionally. All of the things they do together and all of the socialization she unwittingly teaches him through natural example, she is doing it for love and because it's just plain fun. Get this with SUNDAYS WITH MATTHEW.
Great Book.......2002-12-29
When it comes to supportive, creative and POSITIVE siblings, Sarah Peralta is at the top of the list! In her new book, All About my Brother, Sarah explains her brother, Evan, to her readers with compassion, entusiasm and a true appreciation of his abilities. If I could give a gift to every individual on the spectrum , it would be a sibling as wonderful as Sarah. This book shpould be in the home of every family with a member on the spectrum. It should be read to and by brothers and sisters, neighbors, and peers, It belongs in every school library. Sarah was eight when she wrote this book, but her wisdom and optimism are ageless.
Great book for Siblings.......2002-12-24
Sarah describes everything I go through with my brother. She did a great job. My teacher loves this book too.
If someone in your family has autism you have to but this book.
Sarah you r the best cossin.......2002-09-17

Book Description
Murderers, mob bosses, and convicts . . . these guys are not your average neighbors. Unless you live on Alcatraz. It's 1935 and twelve-year-old Moose Flanagan and his family have just moved to the infamous island that's home to criminals like notorious escapee Roy Gardner, Machine Gun Kelly, and of course, Al Capone. Now Moose has to try to fit in at his new school, avoid getting caught up in one of the warden's daughter's countless plots, and keep an eye on his sister Natalie, who's not like other kids. All Moose wants to do is protect Natalie, live up to his parents' expectations, and stay out of trouble. But on Alcatraz, trouble is never very far away.

Moose Flanagan, he is a 12 years old boy, he is a kind person compared to the kids of Alcatraz some are trained well because there children of the gaurds and he loves baseball. Moose was forced to live here because of his mother and his dad he is one of the gaurds there too. Moose gets scared his first night because he never knows when a murderer might show up. The island of Alcatraz is not where you want to live because that is where all the worst of the worst go like murderers and full on gangsters that will kill you no matter what. So Moose has to fit in at this island, not be tricked by this girl Piper, and keep his young and imature sister out of danger. I thought this book was intresting. i would recommend this book to middle schoolers or people who like out door books or who likes reading. I learned how it is to have a younger sister.
"If you love someone, you have to try things even if they don't make sense to anyone else".......2007-07-28
Moose Flanagan and his family arrive on Alcatraz Island in 1935 so his father Cam can work as an electrician and guard at the prison and his sister Natalie can have a chance to attend a "special" school for children with Autism. At the time it's not called Autism, but that is what the reader of today is lead to believe. Moose is caught in the middle of Piper the wardens daughters' schemes and her mad drive to meet Al Capone and his mothers desperate need to get Natalie into the only school that can help her. Moose is the only one that can really reach Natalie and the decisions and realities that the family has to face can just be too much for a 12 year old boy. Maybe Al Capone is his only option.
My class really enjoyed Al Capone..........2007-06-28
I used this book in a three week summer school course with eighth graders. I needed a high interest but easy to read novel to catch their interest. AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS was a great choice! They found the setting of Alcatraz very interesting, and they really loved the well-developed characters, especially Moose and Natalie. There are many, many teacher resources for this novel available on the internet. Using ideas from the internet and adding my own personal material, the unit was very easy to plan and carry out. The students wrote daily journal responses to questions relating to various aspects of the book (ideas for prompts are available on Scholastic's web site).
We did some background study which I think added to the students' enjoyment and understanding of the novel. We watched a biography of Al Capone, and we did an internet scavenger hunt to research two topics: Alcatraz and Autism. Doing this early on helped provide context for the students.
The characters in AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS are probably the most interesting aspect of the book. My students seemed particularly fascinated by how Natalie, the main character's sister who has autism, changes and develops through the story. They could really relate to a lot of the things the protagonist (Moose) goes through, even though he lives on Alcatraz in 1935. To me, that's the power of a great book -- it contains themes that are universal. I would highly recommend this book for middle school students, whether it be as a group study or individual reading. It has a great ending too!
Al Capone Does My Pants Is Super.......2007-05-24
Al Capone Does My Shirts
I liked this book because it has some comedy and it talks about what some kids would actually do because it is a real place.
Other kids might like this book because they might want to learn a little bit of history or they might want to laugh. If you like cliffhangers you will really enjoy this book.
The book had a lot of cliffhangers and thought provoking scenes. It also talks about Alcatraz Island.
This book tells how Moose's dad gets a job on Alcatraz Island as a prison guard. This book also tells how Moose and his friends try to get Moose's sister, in to a private school called the Esther P. Marinoff.
Al Copone Does My Shirts.......2007-05-22
I loved the book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes comedy/history books. I liked the book because I thought it was funny and entertaining.
Someone else might like the book because you learn about convicts that lived on Alcatraz. Someone else might also like it because you learn a little about autism in this book.
The book had a lot of facts about Alcatraz. The book was funny at times but at others it wasn't. You should read this book because it is funny, entertaining, and educational.

Book Description
All his life, Tim Meeker has looked up to his brother Sam. Sam's smart and brave -- and is now a part of the American Revolution. Not everyone in town wants to be a part of the rebellion. Most are supporters of the British -- including Tim and Sam's father. With the war soon raging, Tim know he'll have to make a choice -- between the Revolutionaries and the Redcoats . . . and between his brother and his father.

This book still makes me cry.......2007-09-25
I first read this book when I was about 10 for a class project. We were only supposed to read a few pages a night for homework assignments but I ended up reading the entire book in a few hours. It was so good, I just couldn't put it down. I'm 20 years old now and I still read it from time to time and still cry at the end of the book. It's a wonderful novel about the American Revolutionary War and family. Read this if you're in the mood for a good-hearted novel and maybe a small cry.

If you like books about War, blood and violence? This is the book for you it is historical fiction book. It takes place during the American Revolution. This story tells how War will tear families apart.
This Story talks about how War is Cruel. Sam wants to go to War to fight for his country with the Patriots and his Father is against him fighting. There all suppose to be on the Torres. Ever since Sam has gone to war they have caused a lot of arguments and fights between Father and Sam. Sam has made a bad decision to go to War because now you have caused fighting with your Family and now more work for Tim and the rest of the Family since you had left.
After Sam left Tim had to do all of the work Mom and Dad mostly depended on him for cattle and other things. Tim wants to be like his brother and fight in the American Revolution for his Country. Mom was an alcoholic and she is a depressed also Dad will not let Mom mail back her son Sam just because Dad got in a fight with Sam. To me that is not right because you do not like a person she doesn't have to like him to.
I can connect an text to self because I had an family member that has died in an War an that is my older brother Marcus I recommend this book of the family members we have lost a lot of Americans from the War because War is Cruel and it may tear families apart.
This book talks about the War back in the day and this book is good because it has a lot of info in this book.
#1 My Brother Sam is Dead Is a HIT #1.......2007-05-01
The story is about a boy named Tim Meeker and how he looses most of his family because of war and a feud between his brother and his father because, Tim's brother wants to go to war. In the book it talks about how Tim's brother runs away. The brother comes back in the middle of the book and he finds out what happens to his dad. As you go along in the book Tim's brother goes to jail for a crime he never committed. Another thing that happens in the book is how Tim gets shot in the arm trying to save his brother Sam. At the end of the book something unexpected happens, but you have to read it to find out.
My Brother Sam Is Dead.......2007-04-30
Book review-My Brother Sam is Dead
By Chris Pollio, age 13, White Plains, New York
ISBN # 0439783607
My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoin Collier and Christopher Collier; Scholastic, Inc. United States, early 1970's; $5.99
Although I've only seen clips of the Revolutionary War in social studies class, it feels like I have experienced the war but I guess it's just the fact that I read the book My Brother Sam is Dead. The book My Brother Sam is Dead was written by the Collier brothers and is a warfare historical fiction book. This book is about the Meeker family and how they face many conflicts such as Sam going off to fight in the Revolutionary war.
This book shows how a family's life can change because of war. In the book My Brother Sam is Dead the Meeker family lives in Redding, Connecticut. The story takes place during the early 1700's. Sam a rebel fighting against the British is in war while Tim his brother, Mother and Farther are continuing on with the tavern business and their daily lives. An opinion I had on this book was it was boring at first. But then soon after it changed to a book that had me on the edge of my seat because there is a lot of action and adventure that takes place in the book. Like when someone's head got chopped off. I think this book is worth reading.
There are many conflicts that the Meeker's face during the Revolutionary war. One conflict that the Meeker's face during the Revolutionary war is that Sam ran away to join the rebels also known as Patriots to fight against the British army. Another conflict that the Meeker family faces during the Revolutionary war is that business is getting slower and the products are getting harder to receive since the patriots pay with their own money which is worth nothing. One more big conflict that the Meeker's face is that Tim and father go and sell supplies to earn money for the business in Verplanks Point and they run into cowboys. The cowboys kidnapped father and Tim journeys home never meeting with father again. A connection I can make with this book relates to the movie The Patriot. I can relate this book to the movie the Patriot because they are both about the Revolutionary war and the battles and wars between the British and Patriots. When I was watching this movie I was thinking of this book because it had the same story line, which was war that takes place in the early 1700's. The theme for this book is that war can turn men into beasts. Another theme relating to this story is that war can tear families apart.
I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a historical war and the revolution because that is what takes place in the book. The target audience for this book is young adult. But I suggest that you should read it. This book is a satisfying book. One award this book received the Newbery Honor, the Notable Children's Book by the American Library Association and was nominated for National Book Award. James Lincoln Collier was born into a family full of authors, this book is amazing. You should read it and if you choose to read it I hope you enjoy.
"My Brother Sam Is dead".......2007-03-31
If you like war movies or books this might be the book for you. It talks bout how this boy named Sam wants to go to war for no reason just to fight for his country but his father doesn't want him to go because he wants his son to do good in his study's and also school, I really didn't get that part but I still need to read more it really get's interesting by the 5th threw the 8th chapter.
I'm starting to like this book because it talks about a kid who want's to do something for his life and future but his father is stopping him from doing the thing's he want's to do for him not for other people, but it really effects me because is like his father just wants the best for him but Sam just thinks other wise, his father want's the best for himself not for his son. Is just like my father he just want's the best for me but like I think he just want's the best for himself because I want to do some other thing's like play football or basketball but he just want's me to stick with one sport like my other favorite sport that I love is baseball and I get what he means but other wise then that why wouldn't want your son to go to war and be a man is just for discipline that's what I think.

I bought this for my 4 year old to fill out for he new baby brother. Some of the questions are hysterical and she loves filling out the information and tracing her feet and his feet. I'm sure both kids with treasure it when they're older to see what she thought of him when he was born.
A perfect book for the younger, new big brother/sister.......2007-07-14
I bought this book for my 3 year old and it is perfect for her age level. With its large text, humorous check lists, and simple art and observational activities, it is perfect for the younger, new big brother or sister (3-6 yrs). This book allows the child to compare themselves to the baby which shows them how special they are, and how much care the baby needs.
Love it!!!.......2007-07-09
This book is exactly what I was looking to get for my stepson. He is so excited about our new baby and this was just icing on the cake. He can't wait until the baby is born so he can start writing in his baby book just like me and Dad will in ours. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is either having another child or bringing a child into a blended family.
Great older sibling baby gift.......2007-05-21
This is a terrific "big brother" or "big sister" gift to help the older sibling feel like they're not losing something having just had a baby. It's a really good quality book and good activity for a parent to do with the older sibling.
great memories.......2007-05-18
This book is great for older siblings to fill out about the new baby. If they can't write yet you can also fill it out for them. Makes a great gift for the older child that might feel left out.

Franz Wisner had the world by the tail. He was engaged to the beautiful Annie, with whom he shared a passion for conservative politics and a command of quotes from the movie This Is Spinal Tap. He worked as a government-relations official for a California real-estate giant, rubbing elbows with bigwig politicians. But then his fiancée dumped him days before their wedding, and his boss demoted him. So he dragged his younger brother, Kurt, a Seattle realtor and divorcé, to Costa Rica for his already-scheduled honeymoon, where Wisner spilled his guts to a prostitute in the hotel bar. ("Not once did it occur to me that I was having a heart-to-heart with a woman who faked orgasms for a living.")
Both inspired and desperate, the two quit their jobs, sold their houses, gave away their belongings, and traveled the world for two years, romping through Europe in a newly purchased Saab, then hitting the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa. Along the way, Wisner got to know his brother in a way he never had ("Kurt had become ... my new best friend") and fought to move past his failed relationship.
Wisner's story is straightforward, heartfelt, and highly readable--though without any true, biting insights--and should connect with readers who've gone through a breakup, career change, or midlife crisis, or fantasized about quitting the rat race. His best travel tip? Throw away the guidebooks, and talk to the locals instead. --Andy Boynton
Book Description
This is the true story of Franz Wisner, a man who thought he had it all- a high profile career and the fianceacute;e of his dreams- when suddenly, his life turned upside down. Just days before they were to be married, his fianceacute;e called off the wedding. Luckily, his large support network of family and friends wouldn't let him succumb to his misery. They decided Franz should have a wedding and a honeymoon anyway- there just wouldn't be a bride at the ceremony, and Franz' travel companion would be his brother, Kurt.During the "honeymoon," Franz reconnected with his brother and began to look at his life with newfound perspective. The brothers decided to leave their old lives behind them. They quit their jobs, sold all their possessions, and traveled around the world, visiting fifty-three countries for the next two years. In Honeymoon With My Brother, Franz recounts this remarkable journey, during which he turned his heartbreak into an opportunity to learn about himself, the world, and the brother he hardly knew.

A great read!.......2007-09-17
I really enjoyed ths book. After stumbling across it in a book store, it was a pleasant surprise. I could empathize a lot with both characters. The book has me dreaming about my own trip around the world. Guess that's the beauty of books, if you can't go there. It's nice to read about someone else's adventures. Now bring on the movie and the next book!
A Must Read for all Brothers.......2007-08-28
If you have a brother, if you like to travel, or if you just enjoy good writing you must read Honeymoon with My Brother. The journey of Franz and Kurt is a comedy based off of a tragedy - getting dumped at the altar. The story is a serious story with life lessons and experiences that will change one forever with comedy entwined throughout. Essentially, this is a tragic comedy that is seriously funny. A must read. You won't regret it!
Surprisingly insightful and entertaining...it inspires Wonderlust!.......2007-08-28
Two rich pretty boys from the West Coast whining over a breakup and traveling the world...why would I even bother to read this? Curiosity? Sheer novelty? I love reading memoirs and honestly had that sterotype in mind when I picked up this book. Boy--was I wrong. Honeymoon With My Brother was an insightful and entertaining memoir. Franz Wisner handles his breakup with sensitivity and humility, and has the courage to follow through on the "take this job and shove it" mindset we all experience at one time or another. His journey around the world was captivating, plus his relationship with his brother, friends and strangers along the way, and the memorable LeRue, make this a worthwhile read.
Another travelogue.......2007-08-09
The book itself is your typical travelogue told by Wisner who has "found" himself while touring around the country for years. If you are looking for a light hearted easy read than this book is for you. It tries to offer his point of view on what he found and his interpretation of his surroundings.
Stops short........2007-06-28
I read this book every day and found it hard to put it down. I was a travel agent a long time ago so any book having to do with travel grabs me right away. I had to put the book down for a week because my daughter got sick. When I finally picked it up again to finally finish the long awaited last chapter of this great book, it ended as abruptly as the final episode of "The Sopranos". I reread the last chapter again, thinking I might have missed something, just like I did when I watched a rerun of the last Sopranos episode. Did I miss a chapter somewhere? I felt gypped. I wanted to know more about how the authors life resolved at the end. Instead, I feel like I was left hanging. Did Franz ever get married? Did he ever go back to Corporate American or did he and Kurt start their own company?? I want a sequal.

Asked why the writing of the My Side of the Mountain trilogy took Jean Craighead George more than 40 years, she responds, "My mother disapproved of sequels. 'Those are trashy books,' she told me when I was a child. So I grew up and did not write them.
"But kids are wiser than adults, I learned. Letters kept arriving from schools and homes, saying, 'We want to know more about Sam, Frightful, and the wilderness.' 'Sequels,' they said, 'are important.' They were right."
Now, all three of George's remarkable novels about the wilderness adventures of young Sam Gribley and his falcon, Frightful, are available in one handsome volume. In My Side of the Mountain, a Newbery Honor Book, Sam leaves home to fend for himself in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. For a year he lives in a hollowed-out tree, befriending animals and depending on his wits for survival. In the sequel, On the Far Side of the Mountain, Sam's sister has now joined him, and his falcon is confiscated by a conservation officer. Frightful's Mountain is an interesting departure for George. Written from the perspective of Frightful the falcon, the concluding novel in the trilogy follows her efforts to learn to depend on her own instincts in a world crawling with dangers.
Jean Craighead George is the beloved author of more than 80 books, including the Newbery Medal winner, Julie of the Wolves. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
In 1959, Jean Craighead George published My Side of the Mountain. This coming-of-age story about a boy and his falcon went on to win a Newbery Honor, and for the past forty years has enthralled and entertained generations of would-be Sam Gribleys. The two books that followed--On the Far Side of the Mountain and Frightful's Mountain--were equally extraordinary. Now all three books are available in one deluxe yet affordable volume for veteran devotees and brand-new fans alike.

Not Just for Children.......2007-07-19
As former wildlife rehabilitators of birds of prey, my wife & I now retirement age, completely enjoyed the narative and are amazed at the the accuracy and depth of JCG's facts. Truely a heart warming trilogy in todays not so warm world. JCG has been given a great gift to combine depth of knowledge and story telling. We are fans of hers and now have read many of her books.
I mentioned this book to the very best rehabber we know & she was so happy to have the title as she had forgotten it & read it when she was 11. Said today it has influenced her life ever since, a very highly educated abd sophisticated woman who lives in the woods. As a child, her father would drop them off in the Adirondack woods, with meger supplies, a section map etc, and then pick them up at a pre-arranged spot 3 or more days later. This went on till she was sixteen. Now she will purchase & pass this trilogy on to her grandson. Ractions from others to whom I have introduced this series include, from a VP of a multi billion corp. who was fascinated with it, finished it quickly and gave it to the son of his "Boss" and wants his report back. etc etc.
An OK book.......2007-04-19
i thought that this book was an ok book. i didn't like it that much because i kinda got bored with it. some of the good parts were when Frightful caught an animal. it didn't have enough action in it. If you like books that aren't thrilling and and books that are calm then this is your kind of book!! but if you like action and books that make you think than i suggest the Artemis Fowell series!!!
An Adventure.......2007-04-19
My Side of the mountain is about a boy who is sick of the city and runs away to the Catskill mountains. He learns that he can survive all year in a hollowed out tree. I liked this book because it had some adventure. i also liked how Sam trained Frithtful to hunt. another thing that i liked was how Bando made whistles for music.
A Young Boy's Walden.......2006-12-14
Granted, there are still some places like the one imagined by Craighead in My Side of the Mountain, and there are some boys and girls out there who still explore in the woods, some parents who allow their kids to spend the night out there, but this book, like Thoreau's, is much more important for kids (and parents) who have no real wilderness in their lives. Unlike so many young persons' books these days, which try so hard to help readers through difficult times (divorce, peer-pressure, death of loved ones) in predictable, heavy-handed ways, the premise of this book is not dramatic. The young narrator is just tired of the city (not in any committed political way), and more importantly tired of living in a large family in a small space. When he says he's going to run away to find the spot where his grandfather once had a farm in the mountains, his family ignores him--his father dares him to do it, and he takes the dare. Granted, there's a bit of drama here and there (his capture and training of the young falcon is more than improbable), but mostly the book is content to chronicle the boy's slow growth--not from some tenderfoot to a fully capable survivor (the story of "Hatchet")--but from a boy who knows something about nature from books to a boy who figures out, through his experience of nature, something new about himself and his relation to other people and the world. Here Craighead is above all PATIENT--able to chronicle the pace of a life that puts into question much of what kids and their parents might consider "normal" interests, or attachments, or social behavior. The best experience of this book won't drive kids to try their hand at survival in the woods (though that wouldn't be such a bad thing for many)--rather, it will show young boys and girls that there are other ways of seeing nature and the world than those they see on the Nature channel. The second in this series, The Other Side of the Mountain, is different--more of a detective story in the woods--but equally a good read.
a wonderful adventure ! (By Ian in Plano ,TX ).......2006-11-11
My Side of the Mountain is a wonderful adventure about a boy named Sam Gribley who is getting tired of living in the city and runs away to the Catskill mountains in New York. He learns how to use different plants and animals to make food and shelter in the wild. I like it becaus it has so many wonderful adventures and information about living in the mountains. if you like nature, and reading about it, you will probably like this book.

Awesome!.......2007-09-25
Okay, I ABSOLUTLY LOVE this book and I can't wait to read the rest in the sieres!!! I cried and cried and yet I loved it! And I NEVER cry at books! I don't want to give away too much of the story (you can look at the other reviews for that) but it really made me step back and look at the story of Leah and Rachel (sp?) in a whole new way. I've always thought of Leah as being a kind of prostitute or something- throwing herself at Jacob when he was drunk. There is, of course, some sexual content, but that's to be expected. In this book there are no 'good' people or 'bad' people- it's all who you relate to and feel compassionate towards. Maybe that's why I love it. It's like real life! Twisted and wrong and right and full of sorrow and joy all molded together so that it's almost impossible to tell the difference. I love Liz Curtis Higg's books and hope she continues to write them!!!!!!!!

Couldn't put it down!.......2007-09-06
Even though this book mirrors (loosely) the biblical story of Leah and Rachel, Higgs takes many twists and turns to create a work of fiction that will leave you emotionally stirred and shaken. Couldn't put it down! Even if you are not a fan of Christion Fiction Higgs will change your opinion in this timeless love story.
Exceptional Read.......2007-07-13
"Thorn in my Heart" was a wonderfully written book. The book's main character Leana is very believable emotionally. I cheered her on all through the book. She was flawed, BUT she repented and asked for forgiveness. Rose however, had me hoping that her character would have a change of heart, but instead, she grew more embittered and selfish. The descriptions in the book were so vivid and colorful! By the end of the book, I was craving shortbread:)
Love the Entire Series!!!.......2007-03-25
Could not put the entire series down once I started. You have to read all 3!! The author does a wonderful job of translating Scotland to the pages and you can feel the love pour out between the characters.
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a romantic read!
THORN IN MY HEART.......2006-12-05
I ENJOYED THE BOOK. THIS BOOK GIVES THE A POINT OF VIEW FROM SCOTTISH HISTORY AND A TIME BEFORE JESUS; WHEN SUPERSITITON WAS PREVALENT AND TIED TO CHRISTIAN BELIEFS. THE STORY LINE WAS WONDERFUL. BE PREPARED THIS BOOK IS FICTIONAL. IT GIVES SOME POSSBILITIES OF HOW RACHAEL AND LEAH FELT WITH JACOB. THIS BOOK IS FOR ENJOYMENT ONLY. IF YOU WANT TRUE FACTS OF JACOB, LEAH AND RACHAEL'S STORY. READ YOUR BIBLE!!!!! READ ONE BOOK AND YOU WILL WANT TO SEE HOW ALL FOUR END; THORN IN MY HEART; FAIR IS THE ROSE' WHENCE THE PRINCE CAME, AND GRACE IN THINE EYES

Tossing his hat in the ring of celebrity children's book authors, Ray Romano of the popular TV show Everybody Loves Raymond pens an affectionate tribute to his own boyhood with help from his two brothers Richard (Dickie) and Robert (the Bean). The good news is most everyone will still love Raymond after reading his children's book debut, a nostalgic vignette of sibling rivalry and revelry.
The story begins when the narrator (his family calls him Raymie) is 10 years old and the boys' parents are taking them to the amusement park: "Finally, after what seems like four hundred hours, they get in the car and we are on our way. Dickie is so excited that he gives me some noogies. I hate that, but he and Bean think it's hilarious." Kids with younger siblings will relate to having to ride on Chuckie the Choo-Choo before cool rides like the Vomitizer and thinking that the youngest is faking being asleep so he doesn't have to help unload the car. Because this is a book about three young boys, farting is inevitable (complete with green wafting gas), as are bathroom antics, good-natured insults, and rampant silliness. Gary Locke's skillful oil painting caricatures of the slightly (disturbingly) adult-headed boys are expressive, comical, and varied by interesting perspectives. If you can't get enough of Ray Romano, listen to the audio CD of the story included in the back of the book. (Ages 6-8) --Karin Snelson

Good example for would-be children's book authors.......2006-09-18
If Romano weren't famous, this book would have never made it to print. Lacking in almost every element of a good story, it is a great example to use if you are teaching people how to write children's books--how NOT to do it, that is. I imagine it sold a bazillion copies. Oh well.
Our family loves this book!.......2006-01-31
Perhaps it is because my boys are the same ages as Raymie and his brothers in this story, but we found it very humorous. Any family with boys in it should be able to relate to the antics of these brothers as they go through their day. The artwork adds to the story as the illustrator has captured well the expressions on the faces. I recommend it to fun-loving families of sons. Those who wish to bring up genteel, cultured children may prefer to stick with more proper literature.
Lacking so, so much..........2005-07-03
It was during a trip to my local bookstore that I first encountered this literary waste pile. Romano, along with two other hardly mentioned brothers, recount a fictitious and very 'mild' trip to a theme park. The trio's day goes along quite predictably, with the brothers anticipating the trip, naturally and, upon getting to the park, having to ride annoyingly named 'kiddie rides' with the youngest of the three. C'mon people, 'Chuckie the Choo-Choo'?
The rest of the day, chock-full of wedgies, noogies, and farts, goes on with Ray, called Raymie (pl-ease!), and the other one, Dickie, maybe?, finally going on 'The Vomitizer'. So much for a climax, eh?
Finally the family goes home and...I forgot the rest. But I'm telling you, this book is terrible. No joke. Lacking even a mild plotline, among other thing, the title doesn't even make sense. Raymie, Dickie, and the Bean: Why I Love and Hate My Brothers. If Ray is the narrator, then why does he refer to himself as Raymie and not simply 'Me' or 'I'. Oh wait, I know; because then his name wouldn't be first.
Oh, and the illustrations; why is it that every book written by a comedian, or in Jason Alexander's case, a guy in a funny show, seem to have the same illustrations. Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, the aforementioned Jason Alexander. All feature the same caricature-like illustrations in their books. What's up with that!?
R, your friendly neighborhood reviewer.
Ray's Sense of Humor.......2005-05-10
I love EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, so this book really made me laugh. My sons found it funny but some of the drier humor went over their head. Still, a very funny book.
Really not...good........2005-04-15
I picked this up at the bookstore I work at and read it on my break one afternoon. Having been delighted in the past by Raymond, I expected a lot more from him. This truly was one of the worst children's books I've read. The Borders I work at is huge, filled with talented artists and writers whose children's picture books will continue to go unnoticed. However, a celebrity can write anything and get full recognition for it. This book plays out merely as a remembrance of a day he took at a family outing. No redeeming quality or sense of entertainment to keep a child's interest in here. Just randomness of a charicature of his childhood that had potential of being interesting, yet fell very short of being just that. Stick with Sendak, Rey, Yolen, or Eric Carle if you want something that will peak interest.
